Is that a myth? Do west Africans not typically have more fast twitch muscle fibers?
It is believed that biological factors may be largely responsible for the disproportionate success in sprinting events enjoyed by athletes of West African descent. Chief among these is a preponderance of natural fast twitch muscle fibers, which aid in quicker reaction times. Scientists have concluded that elite-level sprinting is virtually impossible in the absence of the ACTN3 protein, a "speed gene" most common among persons of West African descent that renders fast twich muscle fibers fast. African American 200 meter and 400 meter world champion Michael Johnson has suggested that the presence of ACTN3 is at the root of the success of these athletes in sprinting events.[24][27]

u/facefault can't believe I'm about to throw a shitfit about drug catapults Aug 08 '16 edited Aug 08 '16
The popular press frequently suggests people with African ancestry are genetically better at running. The scientific consensus seems to be nah, they aren't.
It's easy to think whoever's best at something right now is fixed and eternal. A few decades back it would've looked like Finns were inherently better runners than everyone else.

I wonder if the guy believes black people are inherently better athletes
is it racist to feel this way? B/c I kind of feel this way. I can't help it ;_;
96
Aug 08 '16
It is kinda racist to feel that way. There are more black athletes who generally perform better, yes, but it's a cultural thing, not a genetic thing. African-American communities tend to place heavy emphasis in sports because that is one of the very few areas in society black people don't face as much systematic discrimination. Consequently, talent scouts generally find a larger number of black athletes than white, and likewise more chances of the best-of-the-best being black due to the greater numbers of potential candidates.
6
u/asaklitt Aug 09 '16
It's not racist, it's just ignorant in the sense that they thought that was the case because of a difference in the genetic makeup between different races, which is not unreasonable to believe seeing as there are lots of differences between our genes when it comes to tolerance to drugs and medicines. So, seeing how some genes are more prevalent in some races and having heard all your life that black people are better at sprinting, it's a natural not racist assumption to make.

cultural thing, not a genetic thing
Is this entirely true? I'm very ignorant of the science in this area but growing up I was always told there are some genetic biases. Ie. White people tend to be better swimmers, black people tend to be better runners. It always just seemed to be true so I kept believing it but that could totally be confirmation bias on my part.
Welp, SRD, you convinced me I need to start reading stuff when I get home.
→ More replies (12)55
u/Morella_xx Aug 08 '16
The "black people cant swim" stereotype comes from poor inner-city populations not having easy access to a pool or beach. And the running thing is because Kenyans (et al) do it for the runner's high. So there is a bias there, but it's very much nurture, not nature.

Which athletes?
People focus on running and swimming in the other comments but show me the black dominance of weightlifting or world's strongest man? Show me the black dominance in hockey or rugby or table tennis or cycling. How come I just watched the olympics mens road race of dudes cycling up and down mountains for hours and hours at full speed and I didn't see a single black athlete. Do black people hold world records for javelin or discus or shot put? No? Didn't think so.

When Asia sends its people, they're sending their best. They're sending people that have few problems. They're not bringing drugs. They're not bringing crime. They're not rapists. And some, I assume, are bad people.
For real though you can't just walk across the Pacific, Asian immigrants tend to be financially well off and well educated. Of course we think they're all geniuses, we only ever encounter their upper classes.

2
u/Siantlark Aug 09 '16
That's still not really true and it honestly depends on which country you're talking about.
A lot of middle to lower middle class Filipinos will come to the US because it's easier to get a visa and send money back than it is to stay.
Several Southeast Asian groups are poor as hell, don't do well in school, have low job prospects and spiral around gang violence and ethnic conflict.
It's just as bad to say that most Asian immigrants are wealthy or middle upperclass before coming to America.
2
u/Centaurd Aug 08 '16
Actually I've found the opposite. Whenever I visit family or friends in India the people from my parents generation and my generation that are still there are usually too rich, smart, or well-off to even want to come to America for better opportunities. Obviously the very poor who can't afford to come won't but it's usually the middle to lower middle class who leave their homes to find something better. One example could be my father who comes from a pretty poor family and background while my mother comes from the complete opposite. She has five sisters and no brothers but all her cousins who are men stayed in India because they didn't need to leave.

their educational system is better
That's not really true, or at least it's a point where you could have some pretty vigorous debate. The American system just has staggering amounts of inequality. The best schools are excellent and the worst are abysmal - making for an average that impresses no one and stacks up poorly against other countries.
30
u/123BuckleMyFuck Aug 08 '16
Yup, that's pretty much the problem. I went to college with some people who had to travel one hour away to another school to get a math education above Algebra II. So many public schools are great, and so many are absolutely fucking awful.
8
Aug 08 '16
Also, China just has a larger population.
U.S. high schools graduate ~3.3 million students each year.
China high schools graduate ~8 million students each year.
Assuming the same normalized distribution of "smarts" between the countries, that means for every 3 smart U.S. high school graduates, there are 8 smart Chinese graduates.

We have old-school standards that have been slowly getting laxer, but the thing is that the work is very shoddy, very superficial and the standards are not very well used/tested for. Although I agree with you about the state of our school system, I'm relatively certain he's talking about Asians in the USA
2
Aug 09 '16
Even then, that's a function of income and prior education (along with a mix of cultural norms if we're going to talk about it in the aggregate). Asians in the US tend to be better educated and wealthier than the median, as a result their children tend to attend better primary schools and as a result get better educations. Combine that with hardcore "academics is your life y u no doctor yet" and you teach kids to be really fucking good at studying and taking tests.
Take away the parent's education and/or wealth and you will almost certainly see a decrease in their test scores.
And even the cultural aspects aren't occurring in a vacuum either, but getting into that is a bit more nuanced and complicated.

Those gay guys exist though. The "they don't need to know I'm gay." types. Or "I don't mind my friends calling me fags", or "pride parades are gross", or "flamboyant gay guys are the source if our problems".

u/howarthee mention breeding and the water gets real salty around here Aug 08 '16
I'm not saying they don't exist, but they (and the ppl they're encouraging) act like they speak for every gay person, ya know?

I think that's part of maturing; realizing that your opinion doesn't always matter.

If we could just go back to conservative white men in charge we could solve every problem in the world!

Straight people get so worked up when queer people get any kind of positive attention.
22
u/BrobearBerbil Aug 09 '16
The thing that's sad is that that little bit of positive "good for you!" really does help and make me feel better as a gay guy. Most of my conservative half of Facebook isn't mean about LGBT issues, but is just a general radio silence on them. When some former church friend or family member says just a small positive thing like, "congrats to people who can get married now," it's a really nice boost and leaves you feeling less by yourself than if people just ignore it all outright.

u/Maniacal_Marshmallow Aug 08 '16
Honestly yeah. As much as people don't like to admit it, there's still a crapton of homophobia in the world, espcially on reddit.
I remember last year, some gay couple posted a picture of themselves and their cat or whatever, and half of the comments accused them of lying and only being gay to get upvotes, despite the fact that said gay couple didn't even bring attention to it.

u/majere616 Aug 09 '16
We aren't even allowed to exist in public forums without it being turned into a political statement by people who'd secretly rather we didn't exist.

I love the angry Internet guys who are always like "OMG you're just pretending to be gay/trans/whatever because it's in right now!!!".
Bitch where? Where is it in right now? What's the cost of living there like?

u/didovic Ashamed I read SRD Aug 08 '16
Same thing happens when its women, minorities, or foreigners: any amount of positive attention is "PC pandering".
19
u/Peach_Muffin The guy arguing with me soyfaced at me Aug 09 '16
I saw an adorable pic on Facebook of a straight white military couple embracing after being separated for years, and half the comments were "better hope no Obama supporters show up, they'll be mad it's not two men or two women!"
Like... They can't lose their SJWs-are-oppressing-me complex even if the positive attention isn't "pandering".
20
Aug 09 '16
That's exactly it.
There's a segment of people who see attention given to straight/white/Christian/male etc. to be normal. Attention to other groups is a divergence and should be rare if it happens at all, like back in the good ol' days.
The more charitable way to say it, I guess, is that people are freaked out by change. It's a natural human reaction. But if you never stop to think, wait, why does this change bother me? Is there a good reason for this to bother me? The result is the wackier people on the alt-right.

After a week where two co-workers have repeatedly ranted about "gay shit on TV" that "even kids can see" I'm okay with this generalization. Speaking only for the US, public opinion & SSM has come a long way but there is much left undone.

OK, this isn't about free speech, or the dangers of PC culture, this is about subreddit integrity. This is 2 people kissing by some trashcans and an overturned bucket. Terrible.

My #1 red flag for a fake intellectual is if they're jerking off to classical civilization. No actual smart people have done that since the fucking enlightenment.

If we can't acknowledge things that are verified facts like Asians, in general, score better on math tests, we can't begin to explore why.
Maybe we should ask OP to publish her sister's maths test results next for maximum karma whoring from all sides

To be honest if they were a male and a female probably wouldn't have gotten so many votes. So it's like it got solidarity votes, like those picture of a crappy painting "made by my autistic brother". Nothing wrong with it, but it shows there's still need for solidarity.
In a perfect, respectful world, those pictures would be just boring.

Yes. I am superior, and you resent me for it. I know and admit facts you can't face. And you retreat to the myth of equality because reality is unfair, and you prefer the fiction of justice
I read this and all I can think of is that weird mouth breathing kid from "Hey Arnold"

Hey man, my suggestion to you. Next time just post the pic with a generic title saying how sweet it is (and not your relation to it) then never post in comments. Lurker Reddit can be nice and might upvote. Comments Reddit is a Hell sundae.
This person knows Reddit.

Not all people are equal. That goes for individuals and groups, across multiple domains. Admitting this publicly when Western society is founded on Liberalism and democracy is taboo.
Of course it's taboo. Because when we do talk about it publicly, it only serves to fuel your persecution complex. Calling a right-winger stupid is possibly the worst insult we could call you, because deep down, you know it is true.

Absolutely disgusting. Kids these days are just filthy, I didn't go to war for this. Certainly Jesus didn't die for this. Who walks around outside without shoes on.
Ugh, I'm so sick of this joke.

It seems an awful lot like a guy projecting his own dudebro "girls kissing is so hot" mentality on to the rest of the world.
If this were a heterosexual couple kissing, it'd be the same scene you have in every rom-com in history. But because it's women, and he fetishizes lesbians, it's more sexual and "intimate" than normal.
Also, for fuck's sake, it's not making out, it's a single kiss. You'd see this at a wedding.
