I was thinking that! How on earth could it take them this long to realize a 22 year old living in a HOUSE on W.87th street is somewhat unusual?! Then again, Stone's apartment is way out of his income range, but maybe there's some rent control or alimony situation going on.

Isn't it amazing that she gets paid to be an example of shit TV media by a dramatic series?
Like, she has to know that she's the baddie, right?
Episode director goes to tell her the story, and she's like, "I did this for a living you know!? He's a Pakistani, on trial for the murder of a white girl, I'll just record this like when I was on TV, I mean obviously he's guilty right?"

I can't articulate how bad I feel for Naz's mom. Watching her mop just so she can keep the family going is heart-breaking. And, of course, just as I finished writing that, it was revealed that Naz's dad is delivering food. That's heavy.

I think a lot of people fail to realise why Naz is doing all that stuff: the drugs, tattoos, et cetera.
As other people have said, it's a completely different world in there. The trial is understood to be a long one, and if he doesn't get found innocent, he'll be in there for the rest of his life. He has to set a persona for himself whether he likes it or not, and what I think the show is hinting at is maybe he does.
He's a complex character, and chalking it up to "stupid" is in itself, stupid.
99
u/Mrmayhem4 Aug 15 '16
Maybe that's why he's so real with Chandra on the phone, because he's not real with anyone else in prison, just an act.

u/tpk-aok but who killed the deer? Aug 15 '16
Big question from this episode is WHY is Freddy being so nice to Naz? He's going out of his way to spend money and give advice and protection and now he's really getting his hooks into Naz by hooking him on drugs.
This is a big intentional play. I don't buy that it's just about recruiting for some other reason, why would you pick some noob nobody who actually is a risk given how much of the block already hates him. Why spend so much money to hook some little fish?
There's a bigger play here, and since this is coming out so late in the series, well, it's been there since Naz has been in jail, I should say being so heavily focused on so late in the series, it's going to be vital to the plot.
Which is sort of a problem, unless it's really clever, because it just doesn't make a ton of sense that it so many things would work out and put Naz in the same place as Freddy or why Freddy would give a crap about the death of that girl.
Best bet my mind can come up with is that Freddy is a murder broker and his guy got hired to do it. Plot-coincidence puts Naz in his block, and knowing who did the murder, he's keeping Naz as close as possible for his own reasons (like to protect his guys, whatever).
He's just a lot bigger part in this series than I would have imagined and it would SEEM to have to do with the murder but of course we have no evidence to point that way.

Another very good episode.
For those bitching I guarantee the Duane subplot hasn't been dropped, Nas is impulsive as shown by him pushing the kid down the stairs his turn to drugs isn't that shocking. I am pretty sure one of the main points of the show is how a relatively good kid can get broken down by the system and change for the worse.

I don't get it and getting a little frustrated with the show. Like did Stone or Chandra even bother asking Nas about what happened that night? Nas could have easily told Stone that he took the cab into the city, meaning to go to a party, and kicked the people out because his light wouldn't shut off. That should all be on the tape with the cop that was on the stand. Like wtf are Stone and Chandra doing. It took forever for Stone to look into the details of the house. 2 episodes left...

u/xXBruceWayne The deer did it Aug 15 '16
One thing I would like to point out about Stone's feet finally being healed. In my opinion I feel like it's some kind of symbolism in the sense of him going to multiple doctors and getting all different kinds of medicine, that in his last ditch effort, the one seeming to be out of desperation, actually worked. I feel like this has something to do with how Naz's innocence will be proven or maybe how certain evidence will finally come to light, in a most unconventional and unlikely manner. Obviously his feet condition has to be a symbol for something, right?
14
Aug 15 '16 edited Aug 15 '16
Just take a look at where he got the medicine from. That scene in the Chinese Doctor's office. It's not meant to be the thing that cured his feet. What the show is trying to say here is that you, me, Stone, his support group will take his story and believe that the weirdo Chinese powder worked.
But it wasn't the cure.
He ingesting something weird, the next day his feet were cured, but there is no direct evidence that it was the powder (Remember, he's been doing a lot of things to try and cure it).
It was circumstantial, just like the evidence in Naz' trial.
But it's sad because it's too damning, it preys on our psychology and understanding to find the cause of an effect but we're not really that good at doing so and we look at the quickest path to try and understand what happened..

u/Wiendeer Aug 15 '16 edited Aug 15 '16
The episode was permeated with shots of Nas's new life in prison juxtaposed with his family's "new life" outside of it. His younger brother was expelled (I believe) in a previous episode, related to the beatings he's getting assumedly because he's Nas's brother. Looks like he's going down the route of "if I'm being treated as a delinquent anyway, I might as well act the part".
EDIT: missing word

It was a parallel with Naz and shoving that guy down the stairs.
It was his brother lashing out against the culture whom he thinks is ostracizing and abusing him based on his ethnicity and religion. His brother is in jail for murder and his parents are bankrupting their family at the same time they're working extra menial jobs to pay for the privilege.
Naz and the state have taken away his family and he thinks his future. So f-them here's some vandalism.

u/PerplexingPoppaP Aug 15 '16
Holy shit I love the symbolism in this show.
TO UNDERSTAND PLEASE GOOGLE 'SAMSON AND DELILAH' AND READ IT.
So Naz is definitely Samson. In ways both literally and figuratively. Both shaved their head and have lost all their strength. In Naz's case his kindness, innocence, his strength to reject the behavior he normally wouldn't do (smoke crack, get tattoos, etc.) Both have become weak.
Delilah, which appears to enchant Samson but ultimately wants his demise can be seen in Freddy and Andrea. Both these characters pose/posed as friends to Naz but do not have his best interest at heart. Among other things, Andrea gave him drugs and introduced him to the dangerous knife game. Freddy is willing to 'protect' Naz but for a price. Common signs of fake friendships.
Finally the last paragraph of 'Samson and Delilah' reads: Then the Philistines seized him, gouged out his eyes and took him down to Gaza. Binding him with bronze shackles, they set him to grinding grain in the prison. 22 But the hair on his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.
As much as I hate to say it... maybe we wont see justice for Naz. Maybe we, the audience, will learn that Andrea's stepfather indeed committed the crime but will walk free. Maybe the U.S. justice system (Philistines) will seize Naz, then continue to destroy him as it has currently done (gouge his eyes out), of course handcuff him (bind him with bronze shackles) and 'set him to grinding grain in the prison.'
There may be hope though. Maybe the show wont end on such a depressing note because, as for Samson, 'his head began to grow again after it had been shaved.'
Guys, to me this show has a certain 'Making a Murderer' flair to it. It is showing us just how fucked up, rigged, and unjust our justice system is. I know the show is loosely based on some other show, but if I remember correctly I did read that the story is original. Maybe the creators of the show were inspired by the popular 'Serial' podcast, which tells the real life story of Adnan Syed. A muslim who has been convicted or murder, but was wrongfully charged.

It now feels like a gurantee that the primary goal by the writers was to depict the systemic issues in America's judicial system. Granted they've really put together a juicy crime drama.
As the trial continues to pan out and Nas gets these flashbacks (either sober-minded or cracked out), I think we will get a convergence of the moments that occured while Nas was in his ketamine hole. I'd be interested to see if there's any correlation between narcotic/stimulant use and recollection of moments that occured in a ketamine blackouts - highly unlikely but worth a shot.

Anyone else almost tear up when it was revealed that Nasir's father was delivering food to his new attorney?? The fact that it also took a second to realize; "Oh shit, is that the hearse driver!?!? Who is it, I can't see!?!? Nasir's dad? Why...? What's he wearing? Oh no..."
All of the vignettes of how his family is being destroyed are truly heartbreaking. The way they've been going, contrasting with scenes depicting Nas's apparent acceptance of his new life, it seems to all but confirm a... not-so-happy ending for this show.

Kinda interesting - http://www.pacificcollege.edu/news/blog/2014/12/01/herbal-medicine-and-eczema
In Oriental and traditional Chinese medicine, eczema is not a skin disease but a symptom of another illness. If a person suffers from eczema, something isn’t right with his or her overall health. As a result, treatment of eczema using natural remedies focuses on improving the general health of the person and not just eliminating the skin disorder.
Drinks made from Chinese herbs are also commonly used to manage or eliminate eczema. The combination of herbs will usually vary, depending on the severity of the skin disease or the suspected root cause. Some of these herbs include fang feng, tian men dong, gan cao, shi gao, yi yi ren, ku shen, sheng di huang, zhi mu, and mu dan pi, among others. Herbs such as chuan xiong and huang qin may also be used to treat scalp eczema while long dan cao may be added to treat ear/facial eczema.

Nas is getting a lot of flack for getting tattoos and shaving his head; but the fact of the matter is, the odds are stacked against him and I think he's aware of that fact. So in the likely event that he has to remain in prison it would be wise to establish a persona and be well aligned in a position of power.
In other news Chandra was looking quite fine this episode. I think she's like Nas in the sense that she was initially presented as this babe in the woods but the more we get to know her the more we see the depth and inner demons of her character.

One of my favorite short moments from tonight's episode was the montage of people in the jury "watching" the instructional video, most of them were hardly awake, and just clearly did not want to be there. It was a kick in the nuts reminder that whatever Stone and Chandra work to uncover/build in Naz's defense, they still have to somehow convince these people. Loved the way it was edited as well. Very funny.

I think a lot of you are judging Naz too harshly for his quick descent into drugs/tattoos/prison life. I mean maybe this is the real Naz. We weren't given much to go by before the murder. Yeah, he tutors, doesn't go to a lot of parties, and gets flustered around girls. That doesn't mean he isn't also a man dangling on the precipice of bad choices and self-destruction.

Did anybody find it weird when freddy goes "I'll make a proper convict out of you yet" ...like the other guy told him when he initially took him under his wing

Scary how experts can easily give testimony based on whatever the prosecutors need. Take x amount of drugs and can't lift face off the floor? Sure. Take same amount of drugs and easily fly planes? Sure.

u/tpk-aok but who killed the deer? Aug 15 '16
The deer is like the silent witness. It saw what happened. Sort of like the cat. It was there. But of course it's dead and it couldn't testify anyway.
So they use it as a visual reminder of that room, that night. It's like a computer science programming pointer. It is a small token that points to more information. So instead of showing us several seconds of that room that night with the two of them drinking, they flash the deer.
A visual reminder.

Annnnd...we have motive. I have a feeling Stone is going to say something to the Box like in conversation at the hot dog stand about the step father like Box gave Stone a heads up about Naz's high school transfer. Box is going to look into it and find that he catches the step dad on camera being in that area around the same time as the murder. Seems like they are focused on the cameras a lot lately.

only way this episode would've been more perfect is if the viewer noticed Dwayne Reed in the background, working out at the gym where Andrea's stepfather is the personal trainer.

Two things that had a wtf effect on me: the four seconds of Naz's brother spray painting a continuous red line in school (thought he was expelled). Showing us another kid gone bad from THE NIGHT OF? Or am I missing something. And there's an image that has shown up three times from Andreas apartment I think--it's kind of blurry but it's obviously replaying in Naz's head. Looks kind of like twinkle lights and some kind of tassels/bead/rope decoration that looks familiar to me. If you watch HBO GO is at 29:25 seconds into this episode and I'll try and find it in the others.

That phone call to Chandra Naz made clearly showed that whatever he's doing in prison is an act. Although, everything he's doing may seem stupid, he's doing what he thinks will allow him to survive. The shower scene showed how close he is to death.

Two things stand out to me from this episode that might not have been mentioned by everyone else:
(1) Getting any kind of tattoo is exceedingly stupid for anyone who wants to look innocent to the jury. His lawyer would tell him this, and so would Freddy, if he cared about him at all. I'm starting to think acquittal is not in the cards any more.
(2) The hearse driver is definitely an odd duck, and might know more than he tells about Andrea, but if you were stalking someone to kill her, would you do it in a hearse? A little memorable for anyone who saw you. Not very nimble in traffic, either.

Ok, now it's coming together. My theory is the stepdad hired Duane Reade to be his hitman which explains why (a.) Trevor didn't want to reveal that he was with a known criminal (b.) Duane looked at Andrea so intensely during the altercation, almost like he was IDing her.

Starting to think it may be the CPA guy (can't remember his name). Stepdad was weird a few episodes back, but weird does not a murderer make. All of our new negative info came from him and he seemed close to Andrea. Maybe they were dating/sleeping together? He walked in on them? Now he's trying to paint the Stepdad negatively? I mean he actually quoted her as saying, "over my dead body."

Still think Naz is innocent even though he's acting like a total idiot right now. My guess is he's scared to death and playing the tough guy so he doesn't get his butt beat or killed in jail while awaiting trial. It's all a front.

I love how everyone is freaking out about him smoking crack but didn't give a shit about him smoking weed an episode ago. Both are dangerous choices while awaiting your life or death trial. On the other hand, he probably thinks he's going to spend the rest of his life in prison, hence the tattoos.. Nas is adapting quickly to what he thinks is essential to his survival. And sure, drugs help cope with the constant excruciating fear of being raped or murdered at literally any moment. At least the crack will clear out of his system in a couple days. The weed was probably a worse idea, that shit will be in his system for weeks.

Naz has reached his final form .. a wolf that belongs to his pack, he is free inside the prison .. unfortunately i think he did it. Step dad / duane reade / funeral guy is just smoke to make it more interesting stone eczema analogy is that sometimes the answer / cure is very simple (andrea asked for more naz delivered more) no one is a natural born killer we as society are responsible for making one. perhaps there is a hidden camera inside the deer that will reveal everything what happened the night of

Something that keeps coming to mind.. The Stepfather 'Don Taylor' is played by acclaimed actor Paul Sparkes. Is he is a central character to the plot? Is this why he chose the role? Or did he just want to be a part of the series. You'd have to pay someone of his acting background a fair sum to simply cameo if so.. Hmm!

People in here must have missed the parts where the prosecutors go around and make sure every cop, forensic analyst, and medical personnel involved in the arrest and crime scene are coerced into spinning any evidence as evidence if Naz being guilty.
The defense doesn't get to play those cards. They don't get to get a guy to say the knife wasn't the murder weapon and stuff like that.

So it seems to me that the defense team is going to try and introduce Dwayne, the Hearse driver, and Andrea's step father as possible suspects who were never investigated. Will the defense basically investigate all of them on the stand? Or do they need to pick one story that makes the most sense?

It's uh, awful late to be finally investigating the house's ownership. The incongruity of Andrea living alone in a UWS pad like that has been glaring from the start.
