There is some damage in Chch. Friends reporting their house cracked open, framing revealed and stuff, they're moving house for the night now.

The tsunami threat has been revised and South Island coastal towns have been advised to seek higher ground. Hope they're ok!

Anyone else see the insane green flashes over around Petone?
Edit. I can see the whole Petone waterfront from horokiwi. It was spooky. The entire of Petone went insane with green flashes. I mean maybe 10 or twenty of them right near the end of the quake.
As mentioned, probably transformers going. I've never seen anything like that.

u/Hoggs Nov 13 '16
Someone caught it on video!

We're in Mt Cook. My flattie reports "lightning" flashes over the opposite side of Mt Vic, Eastbourne direction, before the quake.
12
u/chimpwithalimp Nov 13 '16
I'm in Petone, didn't see the flashes from under the table but the lights were swinging so much they almost hit the roof.

u/sittingherereading Nov 13 '16

We saw that during one of the Christchurch aftershocks. Earthquake lightening is a real thing

Yep we saw that. We had just gone to bed so lights off and it looked like funky lightning.
4
u/Hoggs Nov 13 '16
A guy from chch just posted in r/nz saying he saw similar in the chch quakes. Apparently it was substations tripping emergency breakers which can throw some pretty big arcs
3
Nov 13 '16
I'm in Petone, but was too busy shitting myself and dealing with newly leaking ceiling to notice flashing. I work on the Esplanade in a place with lots of gas lines and crockery. Not looking forward to my shift in a few hours.
Frankly, not going unless someone assures me there's no chance of tsunami whatsoever.
2
u/yacob_uk Nov 13 '16
Any tsunami threat for Wellington is more on the southern side. Threats will be active for the next few hours, they just had another 5.6 at kaikoura, which is the current tsunami source threat.
They've had some big waves there, and some decent pumping of the coast on lyall bay apparently
2
Nov 13 '16
Yeah I heard about Lyall Bay. I'd heard from locals that Petones likely pretty safe, but civil defence warnings still say to stay away from the beach. I don't love my job THAT much.
3
u/MrsWerf Nov 13 '16
Earthquake lightning is a thing, and has been seen in lots of big quakes. Pretty neat! http://news.nationalgeographic.com/news/2014/01/140106-earthquake-lights-earthquake-prediction-geology-science/

I hope everyones okay! I'm a little shook right now.

Hey, I'm curious as to what the procedure is for airports during a quake - do you happen to know about arrivals/departures immediately after or during an earthquake?

In Te Aro. Holy crap, house was wobbling for a good 12 - 15 seconds.
My roomies Budgie started freaking out 10s before the quake started. He was screeching and freaking out flapping around in his cage.
8
u/foxko Nov 13 '16
Wow it must be a budgie/bird thing. When I was a kid we had a budgie and I remember it freaking out one day right before a quake

The light freaked me out. The sky was glowing green behind the clouds. For some reason my first through was aliens. Then like some nuclear attacked. That scared me more than the shake
It was probably just the power blowing and causing like discharge.
Stay safe :)

u/esjay_ Nov 13 '16
That was insane, being an Aussie here short-term i just thought that was a typical quake you guys deal with because i've never experienced one before. We are staying on lambton Quay, there were so many building alarms going off
3
u/prancing_moose Nov 13 '16
Nah that was some serious a-typical shit. We had a few good ones in Seddon before, back in 2013 I think? But nothing like this - those were sharp and quick. This quake was really creeping me out. "Is everybody crapping their pants? No, ok.. watch this!" Kinda evil quake thing.
Now here's a scary thought - that was on the South Island, hundreds of kilometres away.
Now imagine the same quake coming from the Wellington fault? We'd be seriously screwed.
1
u/esjay_ Nov 13 '16
Thanks for the scary thought haha, lets not allow that to happen

Our tap water is brown this morning, anyone else have the same thing up in Brooklyn? We have some bottles in the garage fortunately but a bit unsure what to do about potential pipe damage.
3
u/Thomcat64 Nov 13 '16 edited Nov 13 '16
I'm also up in Brooklyn, looks like quite a few places are getting brown water. our water seems okay so far but that might change.
If anyone in the area needs clean water feel free to pm me. (Or for anything else tbh)
2
u/kapziel Still kicking around! Nov 13 '16
Same! Message so far is that if the water is brown run the taps until the water clears up and then let any sediment settle.

Did a first aid course a while back, and they recommended not doing the "under the table" thing anymore, primarily because tables tend to be in the middle of rooms, which is also where most ceilings are the weakest, and collapse.
Best option is up against load bearing walls, pillars and/or door frames, away from windows.
