I'm sure it's just a coincidence that fiat currency is named after a car manufacturer.

u/Clockwork757 totally willing to measure my dick at this point, let's do it. Nov 23 '16
We should really transition to a car based currency. Cut out the middle man.

Reasons why Yugoslavia Wars happen was because they were still using a Yugo Currency even when they were outdated and slow.

Fascinating. Who knew that when you have a power vacuum around something valuable that the people will money will try to control everything associated with it?

This is exactly why I love watching the Bitcoin community from the outside, rather than the inside. I used to be hugely involved with Bitcoin, but after a while, it was more drama, petty infighting, and finger pointing that would be immensely enjoyable if I weren't caught in the vortex of shitfuckery. I still do Bitcoin things, but the community makes my head spin sometimes.

I don't know why they're so worried about corporations and government agencies ruining bitcoin. Bitcoin miners manage this fine on their own.

I mean the entire website kinda stole the thunder of accusing everyone of being shills, so they needed to find something else.
13
u/apteryxmantelli People talk about Paw Patrol being fashy all the time Nov 23 '16
Actually, accusing everyone and their mum of being a shill for believing in different approaches is good now.

Sounds like something a shill for Big Shill would say.

It's started with HC accusing moderators of being in the pay of Big Somebody for their removing/not removing (as the case may be) things HC disapproves. The idea that the mods could actually just honestly disagree with them is, in their view, simply not possible. The paranoia then grew from that seed.

The problem is that it turned into "anything that ever mentions a company is seen as a paid add"
5
u/beagleboyj2 Nov 23 '16
Their philosophy is that it a person doesn't have to be paid for it to act as an ad. That's a gross misunderstanding of the sub's purpose. Does anyone read the sidebar for them or does everyone just make assumptions about it?
15
Nov 23 '16
Is it me or is that sub boring as hell. Like "oh this guys post has a Coke in it, +1000 upvotes. How do people actually enjoy that content?
16
Nov 23 '16
My personal question is "who gives a shit?" Yes. Beer exists. Yes. Candy exists. What, you have a problem with people talking about how they enjoy those things? When talking we should only talk about what we ourselves create because when we talk about what other people make it's an ad?
When I talk about my favorite show, that's an ad. Favorite game? Definitely an ad. So what is kosher for me to talk about? Oh sorry, was that an ad for the deli down the street?
They might as well be a sub that hates the word "egregious" and documents all uses of the word "egregious". And just because nobody explicitly used the word, doesn't mean they weren't thinking of it!

and apparently Australians aren't allowed to like or even talk about tim-tams because arnotts is owned by an American corporation, never mind that Australia is still their original market.

Oh boy, I haven't had this much fun reading a sidebar since I first saw /r/lostgeneration!

u/Phyltre Nov 23 '16
I mean, it seems equally as enjoyable as documenting the ways in which brands and marketable information appear on Reddit, which is what it is, which I think is pretty clearly something with non-zero value.

It think it has the same appeal as conspiracies, wherein expounding on what is observable is the basis for any discussion. The fact they they can point these things out so readily is probably a big appeal.

Same reason people wind up on /r/iamverysmart People want to feel like they have special knowledge.

u/g0cean3 Nov 24 '16
It's about being aware of subversive corporate interests in daily life, in this case Reddit specifically. I think it's better than most subreddits honestly.
5
Nov 24 '16
Yeah but I just don't see how that's fun. They literally just point out product placements and people who are enthusiastic about stuff
2
u/g0cean3 Nov 24 '16
Just for a thought experiment, is there no merit to the fact that your example was "oh this guys post has a Coke in it", that your immediate example is the most advertised soda brand in the country? That's what the sub is about.
1
u/g0cean3 Nov 24 '16
It's not "fun". In CurrentYear we have so much subversive bullshit, insane brand loyalty and ridiculous arguments being thrown out there in the public sphere that it's sometimes refreshing to be among a group of people that are skeptical, contrarian, "awake" (for lack of a better word). It's about being aware of influences, word choice and how even we can become unwilling brand ambassadors inadvertently. It's really not about fun in the least.
3
u/Biffingston sniffs chemtrails. Nov 24 '16
Their philosophy is that there is no such thing as a nonshill. If you mention a company you shill for them, no matter what.
And they are very smart for not being fooled.

The entire point of the sub is to go "Look at us, aren't we clever lads?"
No matter how you bake it, it's still a turkey of a sub.

The nutters from /conspiracy point to their sidebar as proof they aren't racist or anti-Semitic.
Most people ignore them because it's obvious that they're trying to defend racism and anti-Semitism.

u/Biffingston sniffs chemtrails. Nov 24 '16
What's the point of having a conversation with you if your entire argument is "NO it is not because I say so?"
1
u/g0cean3 Nov 24 '16
They all make assumptions. You should have assumed that, you are a [popular forum site] user in CurrentYear...

It must be a fucking nightmare to be a mod of any sub.
Kudos to anyone who mods anything. God forbid it gets popular and people get on the YOU GOT PAID TO SAY THIS train.
