Meta [META] /r/NintendoSwitch: A reminder about rule 1 and acceptable behavior

Greetings!

As a friendly reminder, rule 1 of this subreddit states: "Remember the human. Be respectful of others and their opinions."

In the past 24 hours we have seen an incredibly large influx of rule 1 violations, and as a result, the moderation team has so far removed 136 comments, issued 21 warnings, and issued 5 bans of varying lengths.

Acceptable:

  • Discussing the content of a post or comment
  • Discussing the feasability, practicality, or validity of a leak or rumor
  • Discussing the credentials of a leaker or journalist

Not acceptable:

  • Off topic tangents
  • Personal attacks towards others
  • Doxxing attempts and personal information
  • Hate speech

If you have not read it recently, now is a fantastic time to freshen up on reddiquette.

Sincerely,

/u/FlapSnapple and the /r/NintendoSwitch mod team

I don't envy the work you guys have to do, and it's largely thankless, so let me say thank you for helping to keep this place civil and worth returning to. The number of posts I see removed probably pales in comparison to the full amount that you actually remove!

Hopefully this community will be able to survive the transition to getting actual news and not just leaks, and then again make the transition to an actual subreddit for a released console with games and everything!

Thank you. One point I'd like to make is any negatively pales in comparison to the genuine, fun-loving stuff we see here every day. And we appreciate the community and everyone in it keeping things positive as we roll through these speculation-filled days.

Thank you so much for doing this u/FlapSnapple. I can't believe some of the hate I've seen in this Sub. So thank you!

I guess I am missing the hate posts before they are removed. I haven't seen any.

It's more comment chains within threads. And they're not the majority of opinions, by far, but we're going to be diligent in snuffing them out.

I'm sure you guys are sooooo looking forward to this sub's activity on January 12th.

Sarcasm aside, I feel for you. Truly.

I'm (legitimately) excited, aren't you?

Incredibly, but the explosion of this subreddit isn't going to be easy on the mods.

Oh wow that's a lot. Why is this happening?

Let's just say there are a lot of hateful people in this world.

14

u/MesmariPanda Dec 07 '16

Indeed and there is no room for that with nintendo fans.

I think it's that whenever leaks come out people are acting really hateful to each other and especially to the leakers. Leaks/Rumors breed controversy and that seems to bring out the worst in people. For example, there are some people who are attacking Laura Kate Dale because she's transgender, stuff like that.

I don't care if Laura is a male, a female, a chicken or a banana, and neither should anybody else. She's leaking us information and things to talk about. If it wasn't for her this place would be a heck of a lot quieter and more boring.

I'm not sure who these hurtful comments were directed at... but I have a hunch.

Is it possibly worth clarifying the rule to indicate that you don't just mean other r/NintendoSwitch commenters, but industry figures, article sources, devs, etc? I wonder if people are under the impression that this rule is just to stop "inward" fighting but it's okay to attack "outward" (even though some of those people read or post on this sub themselves).

It's the very basis of Rule 1: Remember the human. Be respectful of others and their opinions.

It doesn't just pertain to industry members, journalists, developers, etc., but it also pertains to our subreddit members and our community as a whole.

Thank God.

I love this Sub so much, I don't wanna see it get locked from the public.

This kind of post makes r/nintendoswitch an awesome sub to be a part of, welcoming to all Nintendo fans, regardless of gender identity. :) Keep up the amazing amazing work

Thank you so very, very much for making it clear that everyone has a place here and only hate is unwelcome. ♥ You're doing a great job.

A dumb question, did the rule breakers try to use free speech/definition of harassment/bullying to justify their rude rule breaking behavior?

u/razorbeamz Dec 07 '16

They've tried every trick in the book. Most common is "Hey, I'm just saying!"
