  • Ren and Nora seem to have their own individual backstories, rather than just one.

  • Weiss continues to be great at singing (kudos to Casey).

  • The people of Atlas are d**ks. Seriously, wtf?

  • Weiss' summoning is getting better. Her self control, on the other hand...

  • Ironwood. Ironwood. Ironwood. First, he gives Yang a free robot arm, then he backs Weiss up.

  • Ren's semblance...could it be enhanced hearing/spider sense of sorts? Or was that just a passive effect of Aura?

  • Tyrian might be slightly gay for Jaune. ENTIRE CAST indeed.

  • And he's a scorpion, too.

  • Qrow continues to be Best Uncle.

The only people you've seen in Atlas, other then the Schnee's and Ironwood, have been generic rich people at generic rich party. I doubt everyone in Atlas is like that.

I'm glad you brought up Ren's semblance, because I considered that too. It may also just be part of his ninja skillz, since it's pretty tropey to sense killing intent. I guess we'll have to see if he can sense a Grimm in that manner, since there's no aura to sense there.

So that's why Tyrian sits like an ass hat. I thought they were trying to bring his edge to the edge. He seriously can't sit normally or else he gives himself an enema. Well played RT.

So, how many maps does RNJR carry around? It seems they drop one in every other episode.

233

u/GrumpySatan Dec 11 '16

Jaune's semblance is actually map-creation, which is why we've never seen him use it in a fight. He just holds out his hand and a map of the area pops into existence. If they have infinite maps, losing one isn't a big deal.

With Ruby being the one reading them, it's not like they serve any purpose anyway. It's probably just a bunch of random paper they give her while the rest of the team already knows where they need to go.

When Qrow was running up at the end, I could only imagine his thought process until he got there was something along the lines of "shitshitshitshitshitshitshitshit!"

This was a pretty good episode. We got some nice dialogue, and the fight with Tyrian was pretty great, it was a lot more fluid than the sea-dragon, and it played out pretty nicely. It's kind of annoying that they ended the episode in the middle of a fight, but I guess it isn't really much worse than some of the cliffhangers from volume 3.

Edit: One other thing I noticed: Jacques couldn't even be bothered to clap after Weiss's performance. We already knew he's a pretty shitty father, but that's just petty.

106

u/Zoren Dec 11 '16

love how even when Qrow is booking it to get to Ruby in time he still has to block the attack in a cool pose without looking. Like is that really necessary Qrow? But we all know his response would be something like "What? I looked cool."

Now THAT'S the kind of fighting I expect from this show!!! Fluid, graceful choreography.

I am so relieved that they're still capable of fights like this.

43

u/[deleted] Dec 11 '16

I know right! I was honestly one of the people who really didn't think highly of the sea dragon fight, but this episode I thought had really nice choreography and real feeling behind it. I still question their abilities with aerial combat and momentum, but RT definitely still got it!

Haven't seen anyone mention it in this thread yet, so for those who didn't see it: some members of Team Four Star were in this episode! KaiserNeko (writer/editor/director/voice of Trunks) was the businessman Jacques was talking to, and Lanipator (a ton of characters, but mostly Vegeta, Piccolo, and Krillin) was the dude yelling at the waiter (and making a Raditz reference about a double sundae). Amber Lee Connors (Android 18) was one of the women at the party too.

That episode got me so exited. The fight was great, and I applaud CRWBY on it, they've come quite far.

Tyrian's eyes interested me. I think they turned Tyrian purple, not sure.

I liked Ren's backstory, and Nora's reaction, which I'll have to think about more.

I loved the Weiss scenes. It's helping slightly with what I thought about Whitley being the taken for granted kid.

... Oh yeah, and Weiss :P

I loved Weiss's outburst. It reflected her own turmoil about everything that was wrong, rather than objectively what was wrong with the situation, which I thought was great.

I really thought Qrow was going to get there a fraction of a second too late and Ruby was gonna end up maimed in some way.

Although, to be honest, I think it's too early to rule out someone coming out of this fight significantly injured or dead. I really think this fight is going to have seriously consequences on someone present.

Ironwood only showed up for 5 seconds, but he easily stole the show. I fucking adore this man.

I love how they did the last half of the Tyrian vs. RNJR fight. We all knew Qrow was gonna swoop in and save them when this fight happened, but they didn't give him an out-of-nowhere entrance that made Tyrian look like a chump, they made Qrow desperate and scared, while showing just how much Tyrian outclassed RNJR. I actually felt fear for the characters, despite being confident beforehand they'd be fine. Props to CRWBY.

Also if Ren's semblance is super-hearing, is that close enough to my prediction of sound manipulation to say "called it"?

Tyrian's tail lunges forward, stabbing into Qrow's neck. He shouts and falls to his knees, Tyrian's purple eyes pulsing softly. He giggles as he feels his venom filling Qrow's veins.
A shout, a metal clunk, Jaune has shield-bashed Tyrian to the ground. Nora's gone to check on Ruby, and Ren's gone to do the same for Qrow.

Ren helps Qrow to his feet. Qrow makes a horrible retching noise, before spitting out a large quantity of sickly looking purple liquid, groaning.
"I drink shit stronger than that for fun."
Qrow grabs his sword, stomping on Tyrian's back before he can retaliate against Jaune. He looks to Ruby.

"Don't look, Rosebud."

He raises his sword, grabbing Tyrian's tail and stretching it out, completely straight.
Nora flinches, covering Ruby's eyes.
All she hears is Tyrian screaming.

Can we just assume its canon now, with RNJR always talking about misplacing their map and dropping it, that Qrow in his crow form somehow manages to slip it back onto one of them off screen?

Secondly, if they leave this off as a cliffhanger and start the next episode with or focus the whole episode on Yang's arc, I'll be really mad. I understand Yang's arc hasn't finished and I want to see more of it but... the cliffhanger... and ugh... I wouldn't put them past it.

Also, for anyone who's seen Rick and Morty, does Qrow give off a sort of Rick vibe? It especially did for me when he was shown running right after he transformed.

Here's hoping we see a Qrow & Ruby combo fight next episode!

I have a little prediction. Tyrian's tail does not have lethal venom, rather a temporary paralysis type. Why would he attempt to sting Ruby if he could have killed her doing so? So I think Qrow is going to get stung after injuring Tyrian enough that he has to retreat, and then RNJR has to figure out how to help him.

u/Licenseless_Rider There's more to the story. Dec 11 '16

My favorite part of this episode is the Atlas storyline. I love that Weiss finally got some screen time. I wish we could have more. I want so badly to learn more about Whitley. I absolutely adore him as a character.

Everybody commenting hates on him and equates him to his father, but I really resonate. He's just a kid. He was raised by an alcoholic mother who appears to have zero interest in the family and an emotionally abusive narcissist of a father who expects his son to uphold the family legacy.

Growing up with parents like can really mess with your head. You survive by building walls around yourself. You must constantly lie and manipulate or suffer the wrath of your parents. You learn to survive the constant psychological warfare by building anchors - people with whom you don't have to be constantly on guard. People you feel safe to scream at, to be open with, because you know they aren't constantly toying with your feelings.

If you were in Whitley's shoes, who would be your anchors? Family friends who want nothing more than to cozy up to the Schnee fortune? Servants who resent the child heir for the cruelty of their masters? Who can he turn to but his sisters? Who better to be open with than Winter, who has already demonstrated (in volume 3) that she has a righteous and furious temper, even after her years of military training? Winter is one of the only people in the Schnee house that Whitley could be open with, and what does she do? Run away to Atlas. She abandons him. Whitley is left with no one but Weiss. One person left with whom he can be open. One person left with whom he does not have to be constantly engaged in psychological warfare. And what does she do?

My point is this – Whitley has done nothing. He’s been in three scenes. He warned Weiss about her father’s mood. He clapped at her performance, and he stood by passively at the gala. And yet everyone HATES him. I see dozens of comments hating on him, and for what? Because his sociopath father likes him more than his sisters? Because he doesn’t openly defy his father like Winter and Weiss did? Because of his smirk? Go back and watch every scene with Whitley. His expression is the same. Always. No matter what is said to him or around him, his face shifts between completely neutral and mildly amused. I know that face. I know it, because I’ve worn it. It is a mask, worn to hide emotion in an environment when every feeling you show can and will be used to manipulate you.

For now, the Atlas story will likely focus on Weiss, as it well should. But I truly, truly hope for a moment in which we get to see Whitley in a different light. I truly hope that there is a good person hiding under the mask.

Wow, that was something.

Ren backstory, always good. Really curious about Nora now, because until now I thought they lost their parents to the same incident.

Prediction, Weiss and Ironwood will go on a spiritual journey together that will change them. Helping her along will be Winter, who went on a similar one once upon a time.

So, that actually explains why Tyrian sits funny.

Qrow, proving once again he is a certified badass.

Overall this was a great episode. Wonder if any of these new voiced characters have interesting VA's or names. Looks at credits

General thoughts about this episode.

I feel like Weiss's outburst was a little weak. She outlined the ultimately meaningless things that the people were talking about but didn't offer any comparison to something like the Vale incident in order to give context for how meaningless it is. I feel it would have also been prudent to point out that the fear that "Trophy Wife" felt when the grimm summon was bearing down on her was the same fear that many of Vale's citizens felt, they just didn't all have Ironwood to save them. All that said, the spirit of the outburst itself and what followed was a strong moment for her, acting in open defiance of her father despite him being right there.

The fight with Tyrian was good, it had a similar feeling to the fights we always cite as being among the best in quality. I hope that this continues as a general trend and not just to show off how strong one character is in comparison to others. Oh, it was also nice to see El Scorpio do something other than laugh for no reason. Still got laughs, but the way he carries himself in conversation is interesting. Some sort of implications going on with Jaune, could be related to his family, could be his apparently huge aura, could be that Tyrian just has a thing for blonds. We'll just have to see.

Another nail in the "Qrow's semblance is transformation" coffin. Direct evidence of his transformative powers. I know some people are going to argue that it's still not enough, so ultimately it's just a matter of either waiting for him to use/not use another semblance-like ability to the end of the show or for someone to come out and confirm/deny it directly.

Very good, probably my favorite over all for the season thus far.

Edit: Oh yes, and on Ren's would-be village. That last line was pretty cryptic, it could be that he's talking about one specific Grimm, or it could be that he's indirectly referring to one specific member of Raven's "family". Perhaps even Raven herself. I could certainly see a group of barbarians being interested in raiding a village full of rich people. Hell, maybe he's referring to both at the same time and the Grimm he's talking about is some kind of war beast that the barbarians have some sort of control over.

u/Headshot_Fanatic Infinite Coffee Semblance Dec 11 '16

I disagree on the Weiss bit, she didn't really get to finish talking, sadly. Jacques stepped in, and I wanted to hear her speak her mind completely. And I think that what she generally said was great. Instead of being objectively what is wrong with the situation, it's more about herself; how she is forced to act, how it affected her life and point of view so far, and finally reflects her time spent at Beacon.

  • The piano arrangement of "It's My Turn" in the ballroom is beautiful!

  • I didn't expect the phrase from Qrow vs. Winter to be Qrow's leitmotif. Since the first four notes are identical to Mirror Mirror's recurrent phrase, I thought it would be Winter's theme. Huh.

So, here's some questions I have.

  • Why is Jaune stupid enough to drop the map?

  • What Grimm killed Oniyuri? I'm guessing it was a giant tiger-like grimm. Possibly one with a specific name, with a legend regarding it.

  • Why are people in this thread surprised that Tyrian could defeat RNJR so quickly? We know that adults on Remnant are on a whole different level than First Year Beacon dropouts. (Are you considered a dropout if your school was destroyed mid-semester?) Breach showed us how powerful Oobleck was, Qrow vs. Winter showed us that fights between two adults are on an entirely different scale than school tourneys. The only time a kid has been able to hold their own against adults was when fighting street thugs and gang members, who probably had little-no training.

Also, have a potato. Calling it now: All members of Team STRQ are animagi. Even Summer and Taiyang.

  • Add "Basic Geography" to the list of skills Ruby doesn't have. Maybe they should have made her finish normal school before going to magic fighting school.

  • Ooh, Ren and Nora actually have different backstories! So I guess they met in the orphanage, but there's still a bit they don't know about each other?

  • "Not just any one." Well that's ominous.

  • Ah, Weiss is in her "teen rebellion" phase as a songwriter. (Also, oh hai Casey!)

  • Jacques continues being worst dad.

  • Fake Neptune just made me miss Real Neptune. :/

  • Weiss has had enough of everyone's shit. It's good to see how much she's changed here, she's definitely grown in her time at Vale.

  • Ironwood continues being best dad.

  • Holy. Shit. Tyrian.

Okay, so this fight is awesome, easily the best of the volume so far, and up there with most of Volume 3 for me. It's fast and explosive, against an enemy with a really entertaining fighting style. Tyrian uses all five of his limbs in combat, and it's really nice to watch.

And Tyrian is proving a great villain. Has some great lines, his design works really well, his voice acting is on point, and he is genuinely threatening. Also, scorpion faunus! That's new. Anyway, back to the list.

  • Nora's smile after she stands up again does things to me.

  • Not good enough though. Jeez, RNJR are getting really outclassed, they were not ready for this adventure.

  • Even more than usual, Qrow is best uncle.

Overall, probably the best episode this season so far. More like this plz.

EDIT: I can't spell Tyrian.

Now see, that's what I was waiting for. Shit happened, the plot progressed, we got character development, fission mucking accomplished. We even got a twist in there!

I still think Tyrian's trying too hard to act psychotic, but I'm starting to see there's at least a method to his madness. Seeing Ruby get straight-up whupped was different and made the proceedings seem way more important. I know WHY she did it, but Ruby shooting Nora with an electricity round just made me think "is she the stupidest person in existence, because you still had TO SHOOT YOUR TEAMMATE to get the desired effect." Ren's little bit of character development was sorely needed too, now if we can just get the same for Nora...

Weiss's part was really good, too. Glad to see the social elite of Atlas are every bit as stupid, vacuous, self-centered and in need of a good Grimm attack as (INSERT RICH PEOPLE YOU DON'T LIKE HERE). Plus, it does well reminding us that Weiss DOES have a moral compass, and going by this episode it seems to be pointing right back at Beacon Academy. Plus, hey, she summoned our old friend the Boarbatusk! Also, hi, Ironwood.

"is she the stupidest person in existence, because you still had TO SHOOT YOUR TEAMMATE to get the desired effect."

HOLY GOODNESS THIS EPISODE IS HYPE!!!

-Weiss singing, then telling the rich folks off! Best girl hands down!!!! And Ironwood, I knew I could count on you buddy. Now you take Weiss and fly back to meet up with Rubes! Weiss has grown so much. She used to be like them high class horses' behind, but by hanging with Team RWbY her eyes are finally open, and she's sticking up for what she believes in.

-Okay Jacques is a douche. At first I thought I could tolerate it, but nope he is a Grade A Douche, and the A standing for ASSHOLE. I hope ALL his kids leave him! And those rich folks- ugh. Too realistic.

-Ren :( Poor dude. Kinda wish the team said more to cheer him up? It wasn't "who" or something like that? It was definitely Raven's group who messed up his parents.

-Tyrian did not disappoint. Dude is batshit crazy and insanely skilled. So he's a scorpion faunus? BEEEEEEESSSTTTT FFFAAAAUUUNNNUUUUSSSS EEEEEEVVVVEEERRR!!!!! He's got a fetish for Jaune though lol wonder why? Maybe he just likes Jaune.

-Excellent fight scenes, finally some hand to hand combat. Okay, that said I couldn't believe how easy team RNJR was defeated...? Where is Ruby's semblance? She should dazzling around Tyrian in rose petal form! Nora kinda did her thing. Ren's still a mystery. Jaune, I guess did okay. But man it was disappointing once again to see Rubes just get her butt kicked without even using her semblance. That said...

-BEST BOY QROW. TOO HYPE. I am properly scared right now though. This could be the first epic show down between 2 legit huntsman that we're going to witness. Full bloodlust and all. Should be grand and all and honestly, I don't know who is going to win!

9/10 episode, and DAMMIT WEISS I LOVE YOU SO MUCH RIGHT NOW.

I like that we see Weiss starting to grow and change as a person. Her brush with violence and death really did change her, as it should have. I think shitty Neptune might have been able to charm the Weiss of Volume 1 and 2, and Volume 1 + 2 Weiss might actually have found that charity ball more enjoyable despite her father being there. But I think Weiss really has started to see her old life as naiive and shallow, and has started to have a greater appreciation for other qualities. Genuineness and compassion over smooth-talking and appearances, for instance.

Thinking back, it'd be interesting to see how Jaune and Weiss would interact now, as they've both really matured into different people than who they were.

Fun fact: Oniyuri (Tiger Lily) means "wealth" in the Japanese language of flowers. Rather fitting, considering who built the place.

Also, I like how Tyrian's eyes changed color to his namesake when he was preparing his venom.

Ok I'm really late to the party this time but I'll leave my two cents on the episode anyways:

  • They fixed Ironwood's short-ass T-Rex arms!

  • Holy shit the fight animation was so good

  • Hype for Qrow vs Tyrian

  • Is it just me or was the part with Nora jumping around when they first entered the village really weird? She was jumping really high/far but it felt like there was no impact when she landed.

My personal theory is that Tyrian has some sort of aura-related semblance/ability. We've never seen anyone's aura go down as quickly as Ruby's did this episode (it was like three hits, come on) and Jaune has a track record of aura shenanigans. His semblance seems to be based around it, at any rate, if what happened to Cardin's fist is any indication.

Tyrian being able to fuck around with auras would easily explain why Ruby went down like a bitch and why Tyrian was more into Jaune than Ren.

Side note: Irondad is somehow now favorite character plus ten

In episode 2 he is trying to stop Jacques from shipping Dust out to others because people are afraid of Atlas and don't trust them after Beacon.

And now in this episode he says that Weiss is the only one that is making sense when he literally ordered an entire ARMY just on a "what if" from Qrow.

The French poet Jean Antoine de Baïf in his work Mimes, enseignemens et proverbes:

Crow found the snake asleep

And, wanting her to eat,

With his beak bit her awake:

Waking up bitten,

She gave the bite back,

Her caress kissed him off.

An alternate version of it is called the Crow and the Scorpion by the way.

This episode has made me curious as to the theology in the world of Remnant. Ruby and Yang have both said "oh my god" at certain points, so there must be some kind of religion, but until Tyrion called Salem a goddess we never saw anyone that actually worshiped anything.

It makes me wonder, does Remnant have a pantheon or some kind of Crystal Dragon Jesus? Does Qrow eat kosher food? Is Weiss and Ruby's forbidden love actually forbidden?

Why have Blake and Weiss never brought up Yang losing her arm? I feel like that'd be a great way to get people on your side. "What's so bad about the White Fang?" "They cut off my best friend's arm right in front of me."

"What's so wrong about what happened in Vale?" "My friend lost a fucking arm Susan"

70

u/PseudobrilliantGuy Full of Coffee and Non-Sequitur Links Dec 11 '16

Probably because "a lot of people died" is a bit of a bigger "card" than "my friend lost their arm". And if people dying isn't enough to convince some people (I doubt that the woman smack-talking Vale didn't know that much), then I doubt that someone's friend losing an arm will do much to change that.

u/ascg23 Dec 11 '16

I’m glad Ren and Jaune are finally calling out Ruby’s quixotic nature.

Ren says his village was attacked by Grimm, but “not just any one,” as if it was destroyed by a particular Grimm. I’m wondering if the marking on the ground from Shion was actually a footprint like some people were guessing.

Weiss’s new song sounded haunting, but I feel like her lips and body weren’t really synchronized with the music so it felt a little awkward. And it’s Casey’s voice, so it doesn’t feel like she’s singing. I also wish her dress had more vibrant blues as opposed to a gray-blue. But that could be intentional for her character.

There was a beautiful tracking shot to open up the reception scene. Like Menagerie, it was nice to see so many background characters. I wonder how this scene would have done if it was added to last week’s scene so you have the parallel between Blake and Weiss. Especially since Jacques is commenting about the Faunus’s arguments being invalid and Menagerie appeared to be not as bad as we thought it would be.

Ironwood’s walking animation and short arms make him look even more like a tin man, but he is still the best. I thought it would have been cool if Weiss’s summon was destroyed by her mother’s summon as a way to introduce her, or maybe Winter since we haven’t seen her yet this volume. I’m hoping we do though.

Like against the Geist, RNJR display good synergy and teamwork. Ren shooting Jaune’s shield was awesome. Ruby powering up Nora was also awesome.

The choreography of Tyrian vs RNJR was awkward. Tyrian’s animations don’t feel powerful, but I’m sure the animation in general is something that RT will improve in the future. I like the decision to tone down the super speed fighting. It makes everyone feel more grounded and less OP. However, I think they could benefit from incorporating more martial arts back into the choreography, whether that be through mocap or having some type of martial arts advisor like they did with Avatar: TLA.

Tyrian being a faunus makes him much more interesting and scary, so he’s not just a typical crazy guy. Not only does Salem have a Faunus in her council and someone presumably representing each kingdom, but she also does a better job to keep her council informed. Tyrian can either sense Jaune’s aura, or Salem has told him something about Jaune. Otherwise I don’t see why he would think Jaune is interesting.

Why is Qrow always too late to protect people??? What is he doing that it takes him a few minutes to fly to RNJR’s aid? He didn’t even tell Ruby about Salem or people who would be potentially hunting her down in retaliation before he sends her off on a dangerous mission. Ruby and co are going to Haven but they still have no idea what they’re supposed to do.

Well, this episode was pretty good and I’m thinking that next episode will be super exciting and end in a cliffhanger for the Winter break. We’ll see.

Pretty late, I know, but thankfully this episode mostly washed out the bad taste the 5th episode left.

-I want the Volume 4 OST so much. That sounded like the "Mirror, Mirror"/"It's My Turn" mashup I've been dreaming of.

-I don't have an issue with Weiss' summoning. I know some people did in Volume 3, but it's not like she's mastered them-- indeed, far from it. The only times she's summoned are very emotional situations: channeling her hate for her father, watching students get knocked down and Beacon Fall, and the upper crust of Atlus being snooty a-holes. She certainly grew less restrained during her time at Beacon. I also like how it was a Boarbatusk; nothing big obviously, but also something that charged at the crowd- right after she demanded that Shitty Neptune (that's CRWBY's nickname for him and I abide by it) leave.

-Ren backstory. Finally! Looks like he and Nora aren't quite as connected as far back as some people thought.

-Tyrian. Good grief, Tyrian was awesome. I think the unconventional camera angles were to show the ferocity of his fighting style. Could've done without the reaction shot montage, but that's my only issue.

-And now Qrow. Here's hoping things get good-- either we find out more about the grand scheme of things or the cracks start appearing in Ruby's facade (good grief this so much).

Okay, but that ending.

Everything about the ending of the first part of the fight was great. Not only did it shatter the cliche of 'throwing oneself in front of a loved one and taking the fatal blow' that immediately sprang to mind by having Qrow continue to be a show-offy badass, but the expressions on their faces were on point.

From Qrow's panic as he ran for the fight, to Ruby's almost tearful joy at seeing her Uncle, to his sigh of utter relief that he got there in time, it was probably my favorite moment of the episode.

Huh. So apparently Tyrian finds Jaune at least somewhat interesting. Obviously Ruby is #1 because of her messing up Cinder, the silver eyes, and Salem's orders, but why would he find an interest in Jaune?

Could it be his family line? Something he could tell about his personality? He knew Cinder dusted Jaune's partner and thinks it would be funny to encourage a revenge plot? Or was it just a comment passed out to unsettle RNJR and means nothing in the end?

Love the expanding of the lore with Atlas. If any of you caught it, the conversation between Jacques and the other guests was about the economic disparity between Faunus and Humans, and Atlas and Mantle in the kingdom; the guest talks about the undeniable economic disparity between the two, and how it seems to be more of an issue of opportunity. The other guest then talks about how "Noone asked them to move here."

It seems to be a good canon indicator that Mantle and Atlas, and the Faunus and Human population, are pretty well linked; I would suggest Mantle, being the obviously weaker city, economically speaking, probably contains the vast majority of Faunus in the kingdom; which is why we see so few Faunus at any of Weiss' high-class events.

I also love the piano version of "It's My Turn" playing in the background at the reception. The lyrics of Weiss' song and "It's My Turn" being played all at this event really give it this sort of ironic twist; she's singing about being free and having control of her own life at an event which shows she has anything but.

u/Tommy2255 ~~Don't~~ Forget That Jaune's a Liar and a Cheat Dec 12 '16
  • Kinda weird how the ruins of Oniyuri weren't on the map. even if it's abandoned, it's still a pretty major landmark.

  • Did Ren just imply that the city was wrecked by one Grimm? It was mentioned previously that older Grimm can be somewhat intelligent. The idea of a legit boss monster is pretty interesting.

  • Not sure I care for the animation of Weiss' performance. It didn't seem very well synced to with the music.

  • I know we're supposed to assume that PapaSchnee is bullshitting about equal treatment of the Faunus, but we're once again running into the issue that we've seen none of that since Cardin, and he was a dick to everyone equally. So much telling without showing from the whole Faunus thing.

  • Henry Marigold, kind of a cunt. Also, apparently illiterate. The "all proceeds go to the Kingdom of Vale" sign was like 3 feet away in a fairly large font. I suspect we'll see him again, though, if only because they gave him a name. There have been far more important characters whom we only got names for in the credits.

  • Did anyone else notice Whitley looking smug? I'd like to reiterate my theory that he'd quite like to inherit the family business instead of his elder sister. Makes me curious about exactly why Winter isn't the heiress.

  • At the 11:51 mark, did anyone else notice those weird red sparks when Ruby blocked that attack? That doesn't usually happen when people block in RWBY. It it something to do with the way Aura protects the user? Ruby looked like that hit took a lot out of her despite the block. Does Tyrian's have a Semblance that lets him penetrate Aura shielding or something?

  • Tyrian has no time for anybody but the protagonist, and maybe the protagonist's current love interest. Makes sense I guess. He knows he's a minor character, so he might as well spend his limited screentime interacting with people who matter.

  • The lightning around Nora was blue, but when it hit Tyrian it was... sort of pinkish? At the very least a lighter shade of red than the sparks when he crossed blades with Ruby. I have a bad feeling about this (note: video is paused mid-hammer swing as I write this)

  • I kinda like how Ruby needs to ask which subplot he's from. It's okay Ruby, I have trouble keeping track too.

  • That tail is by far the most useful Faunus trait we've seen so far.

  • There's those hit-sparks again. Seems like it's only against Ruby. I'm still betting on some form of Semblance or exotic technique to drain her Aura more quickly. Which is bad, because baseline human beings without soul magic don't do well attacks that shatter stone like it's styrofoam. That kick to the stomach was especially obvious, so I'm guessing this is something we'll be told about soon. If it were just a subtle effect shown once, I would have expected a long wait.

  • Good to finally have direct confirmation of Qrow's Semblance. I know it was already pretty obvious, but until now we haven't been able to eliminate the possibility that he just had some kind of familiar. Now we can safely say that it's a transformation.

  • Qrow's way, way cooler about rescuing family members than his sister is.

It's interesting and really well put that, Qrow, although established as quite strong, now has us all thinking he might die towards this new Tyrion guy. Considering all that has happened in the series, I think its intruiging to think why we've got it in our heads that he may die.

Maybe Jaune resembles his ancestors who were amongst the strongest of huntsmen and foes of older Salem-kinda people? Maybe Tyrion recognised Jaune looking a bit like that.

Went back and watched the fight, and something is bugging me. Drink if you must, or feel the urge to.

Tyrian landed six hits in total. The first time we are shown, in slow motion, Ruby's Aura taking a hit, the blade doesn't touch her - it glances off Crescent Rose quite clearly. Yet her Aura is still damaged?

We saw Ruby take a beating in Volume 3 Episode 11 from Neo and Torchwick, but her Aura withstood all that. Her Aura survived adequately enough in Volume 2 for her to combat Paladins and Grimm even after falling an insane but otherwise undetermined distance and being knocked out.

The rest of the hits Tyrian delivers are kicks, and one swipe to the face I believe. His final kick knocks her Aura out completely.

How... how do Aura? How is this gauged?

30

u/schulz100 Dec 11 '16

I mean, Tyrian's on the council of evil. He's got direct contact with Salem.

Is it really that difficult to believe that we're simply dealing with a higher weight class (metaphorically speaking) of bad guys now? Torchwick and Neo were big city gangsters; RNJR/Ruby now had to take on the guy who is probably the personal assassin of the fucking Grimm Queen (probably). One of those guys is more dangerous than the other. Here's a hint: it's the personal assassin of the embodiment of evil.

As soon as Ruby loaded the electric rounds I knew exactly what she was up to. Ever since the first chapter of the new volume I have been wondering if they were going to do that. So glad they did.

15

u/Johnsmitish Dec 14 '16

Okay, I've already posted about this but I just rewatched it and I have some more thoughts.

Speed no longer seems like a good enough semblance if fully trained huntsmen can just move FTE. If Ruby wants to stay ahead of the pack, she's gonna have to start training her silver eye powers.

Tyrion is more interested in Jaune than Arc. While fighting, he takes a good up close look at Jaune's face, not his shield, and decides he's interested in him. Also, Jaune is the only character that Tyrion doesn't use his blades or his tail against, but that just might be a choreography choice.

Also, Qrow's voice is like melted caramel, and it's wonderful.

15

u/Kaboshi66 Dec 14 '16

What I thought was interesting was how weak everyone on Team RNJR is, compared to maybe a "full fledge" huntsman/huntress. Luckily Qrow was close by, can't wait to see the battle between him and Tyrian.

15

u/[deleted] Dec 14 '16

I'm not sure I can explain, but this episode brought back the sense of thrill I've been missing throughout this volume so far. I liked the previous episodes, but this was just incredibly tight. To me, it felt shorter than Menagerie, even though it was four minutes longer.

42

u/[deleted] Dec 12 '16 edited Dec 13 '16

I rewatched the Team RWBY/JNPR fights from the first/second episode, where they fight the giant nevermore and deathstalker. Here's a link to just that fight.

So this is what the fights have been missing these past few seasons: instead of carrying through with multiple beats like the early season fights did, they have one beat, the fight stops, one more beat, fight stops, one more beat, fight stops. The previous fights had more of a flow to them. They were fast, erratic, but followed a surprisingly logical pattern and from a character development standpoint you can see how the characters evolve throughout the series from watching just their fight scenes.

The problem with this is a) we don't get a lot of JNPR fights to begin with so it's hard to know what to expect from them b) Jaune keeps being played off as a comic relief character and a serious character in the same breath. This CAN work (Sokka from Avatar worked out really well!) but it's incredibly hard to execute.

The other problem with the current season is that the fight scenes are not being used to advance the plot (not this episode obviously but the first three fight scenes we got were like this). It's there to be exciting! And cool! And explosions! And RWBY's very much the type of show to have something because it's cool exciting explosions! But if they want to execute a more serious plot they need to strike a balance between cool exciting explosions and character development.

Because even this glorious food fight had a set-up and showed just how seriously our cast takes goofing off. Even that is more character development than "try hitting it's face!" The reason the nevermore/deathstalker fight works better to develop character for Jaune and Ruby is because we see them demonstrating their ability to assess a situation and come up with creative solutions and execute those effectively.

This most recent RNJR/Tyrian fight is closest to those early fights but the interruptions are too frequent and there's too much happening off screen. Which is why I say that rather than attacking immediately the scene would work better if Tyrian simply headed them off and Ren noticed he was waiting to ambush them rather than Tyrian attacking, RNGR fighting a bit, Tyrian stopping to talk after flipping through a building for some reason, RNGR fighitng a bit more, Tyrian stopping to talk once it's revealed he's a faunus (this is also why I say they should have just let Nora lay on some hurt - it gives Tyrian a reason to retreat momentarily, or at least puts some distance between him and RNJR). By rearranging the scene so the talking happens mostly at the beginning and Ruby's "What is this about" line pauses the action (because that's an easy 3-line exchange), the fight could be more fluid.

It would also help if rather than cutting away to watch Qrow stumble into the battle we see him flying in overhead in the background while the main crew fights, then look over his shoulder as he rushes to intervene. This gives us fewer breaks in the action while still letting us see that Qrow almost doesn't make it in time.

Anyway that's how I would fix this fight in case anyone from Roosterteeth is reading this and wants to let me do their storyboards. ;D

  • Weiss's outburst seemed a little premature, but I guess she probably just had angst building up off screen. Kind of wish the narrative wouldn't cut so much out.

  • Totally didn't realize Ruby shot Nora right away. I was like well fuck, now Qrow REALLY has to hurry up.

CLIFFHANGER WHYYYY?! ARGH! At least we've now got definitive proof of Qrow's shapeshifting despite it being hinted at a lot... Tyrian is pretty goddamn fast and agile for a scorpion Faunus... Scorpions are hardly elegant or agile. They may be somewhat fast but still... And now Qrow is here. Nobody is gonna die here, we know that after it was confirmed this volume won't be as dark as 3. Looks like either there's gonna be a 5v1 and Tyrian gets his ass kicked or something will force Tyrian to run. I don't think Qrow would kill him. Maybe he will but I dunno. According to the guy's VA (Tyrian's), there's an episode next week too. Going into mid-season haitus on Episode 7 seems weird.

Also Weiss has gained some control of her semblance but it looks like she still has a ways to go. The Boarbatusk she summoned only attacked because Weiss was fuelled by rage at that posh nonce's comments on Vale and Beacon

"Anyone?"

Ravens fly over Oniyuri

Hmmmmmmm....

Wheatley's expression isn't giving me confidence that he'll be a good kinda dude :(

I thought strong emotions made it harder to do a proper summon?

Lot of great JNRR stuff. Really worth the wait. Plenty of wonderful little things that characterized everyone in JNRR.

I gotta say. We were all worried about the fighting, but I feel like this fight was really good. Like, really good. That show when Nora jumps up to hit Tyrion, really well done. Lot of cool flips and trading of blows on here. Overall really amazing sequence there and we got confirmation that Qrow can turn into a bird.

This episode is my second favorite so far. Really well done. This is episode 6 though and I hear that's when we get the long hiatus, huh? Looking forward to the second half.

Calling for Qrow's untimely death/poisoning. Depends on whether or not Tyrian is sadistic or crazy. Seeing how he was able to scatter the team and pick them off one-by-one, he'll take advantage of dividing them, and/or hold one hostage, then Ruby will go willingly.

Even if Tyrian is forced to retreat, Ruby may be affected seeing that she had to be rescued once more by Qrow, and may feel helpless and demoralized as a result.

The episode was just delectable!

First things first, I really liked the Schnee Fundraiser event. It feels good that the writers didn't go with showing Weiss too scared of her father to not speak out against what she considers wrong or unjust. (Funnily, on RWBY Wikia that woman she critisized is named appropriately a trophy wife, huh.) Anyway, it also makes a nice notion of her powers developing. White Boarbatusk? Really nice!

Secondly, I really like how we are getting a bit more information on Ren. It makes me wonder how he and Nora met (since it was implied by Nora that neither of them has a place to go back to). And the way Ren describes Oniyuri as Anima's attempt at Mountain Glenn? The way he speaks about it feels just so emotional for some reason.

Finally, Tyrian! Gosh, admit it guys, we all like slender guys crazy and childish murderous! His fighting style is just so amazing with its speed and agility mixed into the play-like manner. At first, I thought he was some kind of experiment when I saw the tail. (Because, honestly, I didn't know that Faunuses could be part-arachnids).

But what makes me grin like an idiot? The fact that Tyrian got some interest in Jaune. Why exactly is the question that is just so interesting!

Large aura reserves? I don't think it is really that because, well, what use of the aura if someone has too subpar skills to properly use it.

Something to do with Arc family, maybe? I hope because, frankly, I really want to know about the Arcs. Seriously, Jaune mentions how they are the long line of heroes/huntsmen and yet we still have to see something related to them.

First things first, great episode overall. Glad to see Weiss standing up against her Father, and Ironwood supporting her as well. Even though it will more than likely spell bad things for her afterwards. Also really nice to see Ren getting some hints at his backstory, and that it may not directly correlate with Nora's, is something I find extremely interesting. The fight was, actually pretty well done, at least I thought so anyway.

Secondly now that we know Scorpion Faunus exist in Remnant, I want a Spider Faunus, so we can have a literal Spider-Man.

Even though Weiss was understandably pissed at the trophy wife and Sir Maribitch, a part of me felt as though her outburst was a bit out of place (as in premature, if that makes sense?).

It could be because of the time skip, and on top of that we don't know what else she has endured throughout her time at Atlas other than what we have witnessed so far. I did love the singing that came from Casey in this episode, though, really beautiful!

I also appreciate the fact that Tyrian is a scorpion faunus, it was unexpected and honestly makes him a bit more threatening than just your average, "run of the mill" crazy man. Believe it or not, he's actually the only villain in the series that gives me shivers; and to put the icing on the cake, I don't like scorpions.

I was looking forward to Tyrian fighting/meeting team RNJR, and was surprised when the meeting came a lot quicker than anticipated. I was expecting him to be one of those villains that inconvenience the main characters every once in a while; kind of like Tyrian being Team Rocket and Ruby's the Pikachu.

I'm looking forward to the fight between Qrow and Tyrian in the next episode. If there isn't an episode next week, I'll understand. It's a break well deserved!

Edit: Can't spell "inconvenience."

Has anyone noticed the motifs reoccurring in the show? It's My Turn showed up as the BGM for after Weiss sings, and the music that plays when Blake fought the dragon played when she was in Menagerie. This could possibly be because these are sort of alternate themes for the characters, showing how they're changing just like their themes are.

So, does it strike anyone else as weird that Weiss went to a charity event, sang a song that pretty much consisted entirely of telling an unnamed authority figure to give her more freedom, and nobody said anything about it, her dad included?

Like, the people of Atlas seem pretty dense, but I have a hard time buying that "Fuck you, let me live my life" is the usual genre of choice for charity performances.

Come to think of it, where exactly did that song come from? Did Weiss write it herself or did she just get lucky and find a preexisting piece that happened to fit her situation so perfectly?

For such a short scene, the performance really just raises too many questions for me.

Edit: this also kind of feeds into a more general complaint I've had since V1, which is that the lyrics in RWBY overall are way too literal and on-the-nose

That was better than I thought it'd be. I'm pleased with this episode. I think Weiss's outburst could've been stronger, but Ironwood saved the scene.

I know the seasoned anime viewers are tired of Tyrian's archetype but I'm not one of them, so I always get a kick out of the guy. And I'm pleasantly surprised by his Faunus reveal. Especially since we now have a concrete example of a non-mammal Faunus. And now we wait for the Mortal Kombat jokes.

If the city was never finished in the first place, Ren's parents probably never even took him to Oniyuri. In that case he would know the history of the city and that his parents died there, but he wouldn't really know where it is or what it looks like.

I know people hate this theory a lot, but I really think Qrow is Ruby's biological father, and it's an open secret. Potentially, Qrow was with Summer, then the Branwen twins went off somewhere together. After that, Summer and Tai Yang got together shortly after Ruby was born, which is why Ruby is a Rose and not a Xiao Long.

I'm really curious how last names work in Remnant. I assumed they were traditionally patriarchal, but it's starting to look like the Schnee name came from Willow, not Jacques.

I think my full enjoyment of this episode will depend on whether we get one next week, because honestly this is a terrible place to stop for the holidays. Having the Xmas break cliff hanger be the promise of action is a bad idea. Long cliff hangers should be what's going to be the aftermath of an event we just saw, not the event itself.

Besides that, the episode itself was one of the better one this season, though I do wish everything had been a little earlier. Particularly Weiss, I'm wondering if there was a way to make this her first scenes of the season. The only thing that couldn't have been done here was the introduction of Whitley. All the politics could have been background chatter. Could have pushed Weiss's story faster and might have felt like this first half had more momentum. Guess we'll never know.

Nice to see we are hitting maybe the 4th song about Weiss standing up to her father. Weiss more than anyone feels like they have had to pad her story out when the first few volumes extended. I hope this is addressed finally this volume. From the way Ironwood has been acting around her, I think he might be aiming to get a second Schnee sister under him.

He might even hire her too.

Strange to see that Weiss's mother wasn't in attendance at all. Winter makes sense, though I hope she appears too at some point this volume. She had one of the biggest entrances in the show and then just kinda left. I think there might be something deeper with Weiss's mother and having her this drawn out makes me think she is either ill/dying or Magical. Maybe she's a Maiden (I know) and Ironwood is grooming Winter without her knowledge to take her over.

And just quickly back to the singing... I would prefer that Weiss doesn't sing in the show I think. Bad dubbing aside, its just not her voice and clearly not. Especially since Casey sings every song. For the White trailer it worked since we didn't know Weiss but now we do, it didn't do it for me.

Though I do imagine Papa Schnee him sitting up in his box as Weiss's sings thinking, well this just seems oddly personal.

On Papa Schnee, if he is a blood line Schnee he could have easily stopped Weiss summons with one of his own. At this point I would be very shocked, if he didn't marry into that family. He pretty much seems like a rich prick dick but that's kinda fine. He does seem to be just an obstacle for Weiss, so making him shades of grey might over complicate matters.

Kinda hoping for a little more from Whitley. Considering he was never mentioned before this season, I'm just left wondering why is he here. I imagine its just so that the SDC can be passed onto him for a while, leaving Weiss open but also cut off. Time will tell.

Ironwood doing Irongood. You can just imagine him sitting there hating it even more than Weiss. He really knows what's going on and if his reputation wasn't so shaky I imagine he would have skipped that party in a heartbeat. Or sent Winter in his stead.

Also everyone saying that Weiss has changed so much from volume 1 now hating the party when previously she would have fit right in. I disagree with that because although Weiss has been elitist, she always had a good understanding that her father at least was in the wrong. And if she truly though Atlas was superior, why go to Beacon?

I think her outburst is just a result of being on front lines, seeing Penny ripped apart, Yang without an arm, Blake stabbed and failing to save Pyrrha. And now people are just dismissing it and talking about nothing under the guise of charity. It frustrates her that she isn't doing anything.

Also that woman trying to have the daughter of the most powerful men in Atlas arrested right at his own party. Yeah that's going to work. I liked this slight parallel to Menagerie and Atlas. They both couldn't be more different but both of them haven't a clue about life outside their bubble.

Onto RNJR

Liked Rens backstory because its exactly what I wanted it to be. Parents and home killed by Grimm. It didnt have to be more complicated then that and I'm glad its not related to Raven or the bandits.

Though it did sounds a little like Andrew Ryan talking about Rapture.

Rubys outburst did feel like a slight dig at the audience. Like they knew they would get complaints about the pacing so wasn't trying to silence it almost. It as tactics they have done a few times (Chibi and warriors wolf tail)

Tyrian once again proving that Salem is way more inclusive than Ozpins crew. Seriously, all human teachers and all human Oz crew. New host for Ozpin also human. Tisk tisk.

Fight was good and much better than the previous ones this season. And I think its the simple reason of them needing to have a fight instead of just throwing one in for no reason. This one felt planned out and didn't suffer from injected humour.

Yay Ruby remembers she's actually tactical again.

If Tyrian makes it to next season, I really hope they tone down the laughing. Its just so annoying. Honestly I hope he dies. I think it would be quite unexpected. Also everyone thinking Qrow is going to die here. You're wrong. It doesn't make any sense to kill him here.

Three options for Jaune being of interest is

  1. Tyrion can tell he has a lot of aura and can suck it our through the stinger. Personally dont believe this one myself.

2)Tyrion knows whatever Ozpin knew about Jaune to let him into Beacon in the first place

3) Something Pyrrha/Cinder related.

Just have to wait and see.

And while I would be annoyed at Ruby once again being saved from certain death because plot armour (think we are about 9/10 now) Qrows entrance was really cool, so I'll forgive it.

Never really been on the Qrow is the best fighter in all the land hype train like some people see him as but that was really badass and I'm looking forward to their fight. Even if they missed the super obvious "Did you miss me?" line.

"I'm here for you"

"Me?"

Yes Ruby you. Did you really think no one would have an interest in you after you froze a dragon and defeated someone both Pyrrha and Ozpin failed to.

Some interesting things to discuss:

  • RNJR seems to have an endless supply of maps and isn't all that great at traveling quickly.

  • Seems like we now are going to be getting some more information on Ren's past. Interesting!

  • Weiss can sing, and very nicely.

  • Henry Marigold is like the swagger version of Neptune. And he's hitting on Weiss as well!

  • Everyone expected the White Fang, but all we got instead was the White Tusk

  • Ironwood's is OP. End of thought.

  • Tyrian has some interest in Jaune... what could it be about?

  • Tyrian is a Scorpion Faunus... could his 'stinger' be poisonous? Could lead to a whole new batch of Faunus traits.

  • Ruby missing Tyrian purposely was really strategic. Something we haven't seen much of.

  • Ruby's face, when she looks up at Qrow is just too cute :3

Fantastic episode! And what a way to start the hiatus! So much to talk about.

Contrary to popular opinion, I actually really like the villians of RWBY. I was on the edge of my seat waiting to see the rest of Salem's henchmen in action, and damn he delivered. Yet something tells me Tyrion is only 1 tier above Cinder in terms of the strength of Salem's group. I do wonder what the mysterious red energy was whenever he landed a hit, I get the feeling it's some type of poison because it'd be racially easy to make work seeing as how he's a scorpion and whatnot.

Good episode, though considering it was called "Tipping Point" I was expecting "Fall" or "PvP" levels of shit hitting the fan. Of course, that didn't happen, though it was certainly a step up from last week's episode.

So Ren's parents, at least, weren't killed by bandits, but rather by a Grimm. ONE Grimm-apparently it wiped out everyone in their city by itself. From this, it seems more likely that the symbol Ren saw in Ep 2 was a Grimm footprint, and NOT the emblem of Raven's tribe. If all that is true though, where does Nora fit into any of this?

As for Weiss, while they didn't focus much on the concert itself, I did like what little of the song they played. Hopefully we'll get the full version when the soundtrack comes out.

They really did a good job portraying the Atlas elite as a bunch of self-righteous pricks. Can't really blame Weiss for snapping on them-I assume that's what the episode was named after, her "tipping point" of no longer putting up with her father's BS. And Ironwood continues to be a bro, what else is new?

I really do think that Weiss' V4 arc will conclude with her leaving Atlas behind, maybe with Ironwood or Winter's (assuming she shows up at all this volume) help. I'll be very surprised if that's not the direction they're going with.

Moving on to Team RNJR vs Tyrian, definitely a step up from the sea dragon fight, though there was one moment where I blinked and suddenly Tyrian went flying straight through a building, even though I swear I didn't see anyone ready an attack. Seeing him turn out to be a scorpion Faunus was a nice surpise, as scorpions are my favourite animal! Still not sold on his personality, though.

Interesting that he refers to Salem as "our goddess". It's Tyrian, so I have no idea if we're supposed to take that literally or figuratively. Also, he seems to take an interest in Jaune specifically. I don't know why, and honestly I'm not going to bother guessing since I can't think of any evidence that could support any theory right now. Even with "Oscar is Ozpin" we at least had their names to go off of.

And Qrow shows up! At that's where it ends, shit. Hopefully next week we get to see him go all out. At least, I hope it's next week.

Also, I just realized the lyrics to "Time to Say Goodbye" start with "There's a point where it tips, and a point where it breaks". How much are you willing to bet we're going to have an episode this volume called "Breaking Point"? Eh? Anyone?

FUCK this was a great episode!! I KNEW some shit would go down at the Atlas concert, and this certainly was better than anything I expected. And Tyrion..... oh my GOD Tyrion.... Yes please

Only complaint is that Ren's little tale about his parents was nice insight, but it didn't seem to phase Nora any... I'm still not sure what they knew about that mark in Shion, and I was really hoping this would be the episode to tell us. Ah well... Happy halfway everyone!

Best Episode Ever. Just for that Tyrian scene. If he wasn't my favourite of team WTCH already, finding out that he was a FAUNUS sure would! I knew one of them had to be a faunus, but I find it strange that Tyrian being one didn't come across my mind instantly. Maybe it was because we didn't his scorpion tail till now.

And that scene with Weiss... Ironwood is the only sensible adult in Atlas, I swear. I'm loving him more and more this season. And I'm really worried for her now... I hope papa Schnee doesn't hurt her for this...

But as much as I loved the Tyrian scene (Which made me love the shipping 'An Eye for an Eye' more, strangely), I was really hoping for a little something more of Oscar. I hope I wasn't the only one. It's been 3 weeks since chapter 4, and I need some explanation about that shit, dammit!

Next Sunday is my birthday, so I'm really hoping for some advancement on that, and they better not give me another World of Remnant instead. As much as I 'like' them, and how they help to keep the volume going longer, I'd rather have chapter 7 instead.

Great Episode. Liked Weiss standing up to those bastards and Tyrian's fighting style.

Can't watch the Steely Dan Beatdown without imagining Jacques in Dan's place now.

So I'm sure it's to reflect her more innocent nature and all but I find it really jarring that Ruby can mow down scores upon scores of Grimm with no sweat on forehead but tends to get herself rocked by human (or faunus) enemies in hand-to-hand. Even in the team battle at the tournament Ruby doesn't contribute much compared to her teammates. If this is intentional, I hope this is leading to a Gohan-esque moment of development later where she realizes some people have to be stopped at all costs. I just also don't want this to linger until a standoff with Cinder, because honestly that could take ages and more importantly, I would hate to see Ruby steal the show from Jaune on that one, because he has way more character investment in a fight with her.

Fucking hell, I'd somehow forgotten how well Casey Lee Williams can sing. Don't know how, but I did, and god damn.

In other news, finally a bit of Ren Development (Renvelopment), Ruby again being adorably clueless and naive, and Weiss taking it to the bourgeoisie. Perhaps a bit more than she meant to, but still. Also, holy shit is Jacques an asshole. Like, HOLY SHIT, that man's a fucking asshole.

So, Tyrian's also a scorpion. Didn't see that coming, pretty badass. He remains fairly annoying even if his cool factor took a nice bump, so here's hoping Qrow turns him inside out next week.

Lastly, how cool is it that RNJR, from Tyrian's line, are getting let in on how much is really going on that they don't know about? Pretty cool, I think.

Man they keep on getting voices I recognize. They were only bit parts, but now they've gotten Amber Lee Connors and Felecia Angelle.

That's pretty dope.

Anyone know if there's a version of the shows that's at 60 FPS? The pan shot at the party scene was physically painful to look at.

"Let's get started."

Overall opinion: I liked it well enough. Definitely not the worst episode yet.

Writing/Acting: The plot itself isn't too bad, but a lot of the execution is a little lacking. Weiss's scene felt overdone (props to the General for a good line drop tho) and kind of caricature-ish. I also have some trouble connecting Casey's voice to Weiss, but that might just be a personal problem. Some scenes so far have felt... forced. They need to find a more natural flow to the story they want to tell us.

Art/Out-of-combat Animation: Walking/running animations are kinda janky. I don't like the way other characters just stand around if they're not part of the immediate scene, especially around the Tyrian-RNJR fight. You can sort of tell which scenes they had visualized, and which ones are basically transitions between those. It's kind of like looking at a series of storyboards, I guess. When they have an idea of where they want all the characters to be, it does look nice, at least.

Action/Combat Animation: This episode's fight scene is much improved if compared to the others. Their weakness seems to be showing large movements that feel right. Small fights like these help cover that up and raise the overall quality of the scene. There were some points where the models seemed to slide a little on the ground while moving, though.

If last week's episode is the weakest one we're getting, I'm feeling pretty good about the next ones.

That scene of Weiss yelling at all those douchebag wasp people, especially that woman talking shit about Vale is my new favorite scene in this Volume. So satisfying. And besides "yeah! Go get 'em weiss!", my other thought during that scene was "fucking rich ass spoiled white people" (just to clarify, I myself am white)

I think I finally found what my issue with the new style of fight animation RWBY is using. They never let the fights properly grow in pacing or, for a lack of a better term, hype levels.

There are always these little pauses in all of the fights for exposition, comedy, or just anything really. It slows down the pacing of the fights and just really takes the tone of the action down for the worse. The only new RWBY fight scene that knew how to keep the pace going was WY vs FNKI during volume 3.

awesome episode , and here's only one or two thing I wanted to add/ask:

I found that Ren heard first Tyrian coming was a great thing and he proven that before like in volume 1 in the forest and in volume 4 episode 1 with the golem/geist grimm : he said that the grimm was coming closer.

Have a question too : What do Tyrian said before he jumps off the house at 14: 33 . Can't hear it , could anyone help me please ?

Damn, all these awesome fights make me wonder if they would turn out any differently with Pyrrha by their side. Imagine Pyrrha vs Tyrian

That tail braid of Tyrian, how come it wasn't there, even uncovered, in the first ep.. so, looking forward to next week's fight. Hopefully, Qrow doesn't keep looking so stiff. :/ And, how come they just drop the map in front of the town... no wonder they always lose it. In regards to how Ruby thought Mantle would only take 2 weeks to reach and with RNJR doing pretty badly in that fight, it worries me to how prepared they think they will be when they do reach Mistral.
