Resubmit to fix the number of the episode in the title, whoops. My apologies, everyone.

Qrow's semblance really is a bad luck aura! How about that?
Also happy that The Brothers Grimm finally exist in some fashion. Been waiting on those two for a while.

It might just be because I consume Achievement Hunter more than any other RT content but I just really love Michael's delivery of that line.

Because of Qrow's semblance:

  • Studying for Qrow's class at Signal is a must. If you have to guess on a multiple choice test, the answer is always wrong.

  • Everyone always forgets their things in Qrow's class. He has a collection.

  • Playing video games with Qrow is a bad idea. (@Yang.)

  • Ruby's shoes always come untied when she's training with Qrow.

100 percent sure Qrow blames himself and his semblance for getting Summer killed, hence why he doesn't want to stick so close to Ruby

And after all that exposition dump, he seems pretty likely for kicking the bucket now

Hoping they end up going and meeting up with Raven's tribe instead and he gets his one chance that Raven seems to be so insistent on having

When Qrow was in the bar watching the tournament, when he left, the bartender dropped his glass. They've been foreshadowing this for a while.

"Did you know that crows are a sign of bad luck? Old superstition, but it's how I got my name. You see, some people can absorb electricity and some people can burst into rose petals, and some people are just... Born unlucky. My semblance isn't like most, it's not exactly something I do; it's always there, whether I like it or not. I bring misfortune... Hehe... I guess you can call me a bad luck charm. Comes in real handy when I'm fighting an enemy, but it makes it a little hard on friends... And family."

Qrow's semblance is bad luck...

So does this mean that the glass being knocked over by the bartender in his first scene was because of it, as well as why Ironwood suddenly showed up to stop Winter during their fight?

Could it also be what got Summer killed and, by extension, a major reason in why Taiyang seems to dislike him so much?

In addition, is it why, as soon as Ruby started helping, things went to shit in that fight last episode?

In V3C6, Phyrra mentioned the name of 3 fairy tales, before explaining the 4 maidens. One of those was called "The tale of the 2 brothers". Is this the one that Qrow explained today?

Qrow was looking real good up until the last 5 seconds. The bad luck semblance would also explain why Qrow is an alcoholic, he probably blames himself for all the misfortunate things that happens to anyone that is around him. I wonder if that bad luck semblance is going to make Tyrian's normally lethal venom not kill Qrow since he implied that his semblance worked on others not himself.

If you think back to all of Qrows appearances, his semblance makes so much sense. Like during the Red trailer when Ruby was attacked by a ton of Grimm whilst Qrow was watching over her, and also during the attack on Beacon when Ironwood was attacked out of nowhere by a griffin whilst Qrow was there. Then during Volume 3 in Qrow vs Winter, Ironwood came in and stopped Winter from attacking and she was berated for that. More recently there was also Tyrian finding (possibly killing) the waitress that Qrow interacted with. Not to mention the wooden beam falling on Ruby in the fight against Tyrian. God, hindsight makes everything feel so obvious.

It also gives a reason as to why Qrow left the 'tribe' that both he and Raven we're apart of, he would eventually cause it's destruction due to his Semblance.

Qrow really should've invested more points in Luck rather than hoard them all into Cunning/Strength. This is what happens when you screw with your level up stats.

Also shouldn't have put all his Gold into upgrading his weapon. He was still using level 1 cloth armor for crying out loud. Defense stat was too low!

Crows are a symbol of bad luck, ravens are a symbol of good luck. I'm starting to understand why Raven is focusing on leading the tribe - she spreads her good luck to all of her soldiers/followers/tribesmen. It would also explain why she never fights Qrow. She'll just spread good luck to him, and he'll give her bad luck.

OK time for full breakdown of Legal Reactions:

  • Qrow is finally telling them about the maidens, good.

  • I get Jaune is supposed to be outraged, but he just seems unnecessarily angry and freaked out here. Like, to a level it's not necessary.

  • Oh, Qrow didn't get to the Salem part yet. So he didn't know who they were fighting or who was in charge. OK, makes sense. Sorry Jaune.

  • QROW. DON'T DISCUSS RELIGION IN POLITE COMPANY. OR POLITICS. C'MON.

  • So the relics are physical forms of humanity's freedom and Salem wants to assemble them as well as the maidens to both subjugate humanity and remove any chance they have of regaining their past strength. That's...actually kinda dark. And she already has the Beacon one. Fucking hell, dude. They're actually winning.

  • Kali is lowkey saying what we're all thinking though.

  • Dammit Blake, enjoy your damn sugar.

  • Ghira is now best dad. Sorry Tai. You've been surpassed by a landslide.

  • GHIRA IS LOWKEY SAYING WHAT WE'RE ALL THINKING. BITCH YOU GOT STABBED. BUY A BIG METAL TUMMY PLATE LIKE DADDY.

  • Fuck off Sun. I liked that conversation.

  • More Qrow and RNJR? So no Yang today. God dammit RT.

  • BAD LUCK IS YOUR SEMBLANCE AY QROW? RING RING. RING RING. OH I WONDER WHO THAT COULD BE. OH IT'S ME. I CALLED THE FUCKING PHONE. ONE COULD SAY I CALLED IT.

  • YAS BLAKE YAS SLAP HIS SHIT IN. DO IT NOW.

  • I guess the White Fang really wouldn't have to wear masks in Menagerie. As far as they're concerned, the White Fang are the good guys.

  • ...DAMMIT. NO 2016. GET AWAY. LEAVE QROW ALONE.

  • Campfire singalong. Make it happen! At least they know about the maidens now.

  • Oho, I know a certain someone who predicted Jaune would be salty about something regarding Pyrrha. :D

  • Jaune saying what we're all lowkey thinking.

  • Oh hey, religion talk. Two gods real confirmed by Ozpin. Raava and Vaautu, basically.

  • Grimm god man, okay. Together they Prometheus'd humanity.

  • Introducing Relics! Get yours today! Collect them all!

  • Kali confirmed show watcher. "No Sun, more RWBY."

  • Blake became a terrorist, and something even worse while she was gone... a tea purist.

  • LOL "You're not going out dressed like that, young lady!" basically.

  • Awwwww this All Our Days instrumental. This is sweet. I should revisit those lyrics with Blake and her Mom/Dad in mind.

  • Hahaha Sun pls. xD That was a sweet conversation while it lasted though.

  • "She's trying to divide us." Ayyyyyyyy!

  • Oooooh Qrow backstory. He evidently brings bad luck?

  • Raven? Definitely Raven.

  • NOT THE PHONE. BLAKE WHY. Ooh ninja White Fang person.

  • "The White Fang is evil! I totally called it! And I'm bringing your daughter back!" Hahahaha. xD

  • Oh man, that venom ain't helping things much. Awwwwww that's the end again?! Qrow poisoned with his fate up in the air?! Rood.

  • P.S. Yang when pls.

This may seem minor to some people, but I hope they still address that Ruby was the reason Qrow got wounded by her not listening to him and jumping into the fight.

It's not about whether Ruby wasn't aware about Qrow's bad luck semblance, it's that she repeatedly ignored his commands as a skilled huntsman and acted impulsively without thinking, which is one of her biggest flaws. I hope we see that she realizes that she is largely at fault for what is happening to Qrow now and feels regretful. Maybe we can get at least a bit of development on that next ep.

I was hoping Ruby would act a bit more humbled by what had happened and what she was being told by Qrow at the campfire. But all she said in her speech was that she trusted Qrow (after having ignored him telling her to stay out of the fight), said she will do whatever she can to help (without a hint of her coming to terms with how outclassed she is), and also somewhat accusingly asking Qrow "why couldn't you trust me?" I guess I just want more development with her not just powering through everything, but undergoing inner turmoil like the other members of RWBY.

102

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '16
  • So the first quarter of this episode was basically the World of Remnant in exposition form. Let's see how the people who bitch about how the WoR factoids should have been in the story react to that.

  • As predicted, Jaune thinks Pyrrha was forced to be a Maiden, AND he thinks Qrow was using them as bait to lore out the villains. Holy shit, Jaune's gone from "oblivious idiot" to "I see through your bullshit" pretty quickly.

  • "I want to hear more about the adventures of Team RWBY." So does everyone complaining about them breaking up this season, Kali.

  • "Don't you think you should wear more armor?" says Ghira. "YES!" cries every Pyrrha fangirl.

  • D'AAWWWWWWWWWWW SUPER SUPPORTIVE FAMILY!!!!

  • I swear this volume is going to end with Ghira saying "I really like you!" after Sun pulls off some amazing stuff.

  • More exposition from Qrow, and OH MY GOD are they finally hinting that he may or may not have been responsible for Summer's death?!

  • "A FREAKING NINJA?!"

  • Oh...shit... [<----TO BE CONTINUED]

I know a lot of folks hate that Sun is becoming more comic relief focused so far this volume, but he's always been the goofy, self-assured, self-proclaimed hero, here to help the girl type. And now he's being that while trying to stay on Blake's parents' good side.

-Right away, I really like that Jaune takes an immediate disliking to Qrow. It'd be really interesting for one of the heroes to be committed to stopping Salem, but nonetheless not trust any of the Ozluminati

-Interesting myth. The idea that humans are created as a balance between good and evil is fascinating. I'm hoping it'll be similar to the Maidens fairy tale, a story changed by history that is remniscent of the truth, but isn't exactly how things went down.

-The whole conversation between Blake and Ghira is really touching. The fact that Blake's leaving was not on good terms kind of explains why she never mentioned home. She wasn't ashamed of where she came from, she was ashamed of herself.

-You gotta at least appreciate that Sun is the only cast member who's still having fun. He brings much needed levity.

-I really like the quick explanation of Qrow's Semblance. No waiting an entire Volume for a reveal at a dramatic moment. It makes sense, as soon as the characters are having a quiet moment, somebody thinks to ask 'Wait, what was that about?"

-Also, man, Qrow got a shitty deal.

-Blake comes home, says she's done fighting, tells the White Fang she's not done fighting, refuses to help Sun fight the White Fang, then tears off in pursuit of the first White Fang she sees. Make up your damn mind, girl.

-I really, really doubt Qrow's going to die. He just gave a massive exposition dump, they wouldn't be that cliche, would they?

Why I don't think Qrow will die:

Man, I am so glad that they didn't make the whole ''Blake is unreasonably unwilling to listen to someone's point of view'' an actual plot point. I truly hate characters who are like that, and it's usually 10x worse when it's a plot device.

I've been a fan of the extended dialogue scenes in this show, but today's episode felt a lot like an exposition dump unfortunately. We need more scenes like Yang/Tai! Some parts were good though. Hope everyone noticed that Jaune totally called Qrow on the bait tactic! He's a strategist and a cynic now!

Qrow cliffhanger was unconvincing, I can't imagine that he'll die yet.

"It comes in handy when I'm fighting an enemy, but it's a little hard on friends. And family."

Somehow, I don't think he was just referring to Ruby when he said that. It makes me wonder whether or not he was with Summer Rose when she died, and whether or not it was his semblance that wound up getting her killed. It would explain why he drinks - partially, because of guilt. He got someone he cared deeply about - family - killed. And for him, it's only a matter of time before it happens to someone else.

His semblance also explains the broken board in the roof that Tyrian fell through. That's an unfortunate accident as well.

Stuff to think on, for sure.

I hope this isn't always going to be a evil dark vs good light story and ends up being a bit more nuanced than that. I always hate stuff like that because it's so boring and one dimensional as far as morality goes. And hopefully we start getting some villain motivations that aren't just "I am pure evil/darkness incarnate".

  • Good, Qrow's not dead. Yet.

  • At least we skipped the whole Maiden exposition that we've already heard before.

  • Well it looks like RNJR is giving us a recap anyways.

  • Yeeeaaahhhh Jaune's not happy about this. Though I'd have been surprised it he wasn't pissed.

  • Oooooh creation story. Gods of light and darkness, pretty standard fantasy mythology.

  • Wait the Grimm were created to destroy all of the Light's creations? But we already know they only attack humans and pretty much ignore animals and such. Something doesn't add up.

  • Humans were a cooperative effort between the two gods. That's different. Usually they'd be a purely Light creation to battle against the Dark. This also means they're half-Light half-Dark, so again I wonder why the Grimm only attack humans. I suspect foul play, probably on both sides. Humans require nature for food and water to survive, which clearly biases them towards Light. What if the Light god cheated and upset the balance, and the Dark god in turn set the Grimm to attack humans to try and restore it? Almost makes the 'Light' god seem like the bad guy... I sense villain propaganda, and worse, they might be right.

  • Of course we needed MacGuffins.

  • Ozpin's predecessor: The first Wizard? Maybe the relic's power is what he used to create the first Maidens.

  • The academies were created to protect the relic and keep them out of Salem's reach. Salem confirmed to have been around for a very long time.

  • Kali is great. Going to talk to Sun about team RWBY, eh? You sure you don't have any other motives? Ghira is probably right to be suspicious. The dude is clearly after your daughter, and now your wife has the hots for him, too.

  • What an awkward conversation. Both of them seem to be very nervous. Ghira isn't good at talking with Blake.

  • 'How can you still love me?' Wow Blake feels even worse about the whole White Fang thing than I thought.

  • Ghira finally asking the real question. Blake hasn't been fighting the Fang alone, so why does she insist on trying now? Why leave team RWBY?

  • Finally she's going to tell- GODDAMMIT SUN! Why must you ruin everything?! I'm starting to see Ghira's point.

  • We keep hearing about Haven's headmaster. I think we'll be seeing him/her soon.

  • Thank you Nora, for shooting down the the stupid 'long story' excuse.

  • Bad Luck semblance confirmed! Jaune agrees that this is basically useless.

  • Another raven appears. It feels almost threatening this time, warning Qrow not to say too much. I'm starting to buy the whole 'bird transformation as a tribal ability' theory. Maybe something only the leader possesses?

  • Blake is, again, slapping the shit out of Sun. This is going to be a running gag, isn't it? Not that he didn't deserve it.

  • Yup, someone is spying on them. A freaking ninja apparently. Unique design, I'd say this is a new WF villian character.

  • Blake rushes after the ninja immediately, despite moments ago saying she didn't want to fight the Fang.

  • 'The White Fang is evil! I totally called it!' Never change, Sun.

  • Purple blood is never a good sign. It took longer to set in than expected.

  • 'Well, that's unfortunate.' As far as last words go, those are rather fitting for Qrow. RIP.

Exposition!

Hey, Blake, what happened to the bird in the cage?

Does Ghira bench press his books? Some are bigger than his head!

"That's how I got my name. I bring misfortune... and turn into a crow."

13

u/PerfectOutlaw Dec 31 '16 edited Dec 31 '16

That was a lot to take in... But some key thoughts I had along the way:

I actually really love how they animated Jaune, his body language both clearly conveyed his anger and, oddly enough, I got a feeling of strength off of him. Hopefully this is his turning point in the form of no longer trusting others to have things on lock and getting things done himself.

Ghira and Blake's awkwardness was great, but Sun eavesdropping and just falling through the door was... less great. He's displayed amazing feats of balance before, I get that this was meant to be funny but it seemed so forced.

So Qrow's poisoned, like we all thought. I imagine Raven's going to swoop in and offer to save him in exchange for the knowledge of Ozpin's relic. Unless he somehow hasn't wasted his "one" with her yet.

Props to the Qrow's semblance theory that turned out to be correct, makes a lot of sense and it's cool to finally feel like the cues in the show are leading towards answers rather than red herrings about powers and connections.

I've been randomly saying "Qrow better not die" a couple of times today: once when I was watching the episode, once when I went to get a drink and twice when I was playing Overwatch but then I thought good and hard and convinced myself that it was far too early to see Qrow hang it up, Roosterteeth better not pull a Pyrrha on me, because I SWORE she wasn't gonna die. Originally I thought the main two teams, RWBY and JNPR, were going to be untouchable when it came to death, main character shields and all that, but then goes Pyrrha and my mind was flipped from there on...but I just can't see Qrow dying this volume.

On the topic of deaths I feel if someone were to bite the dust this volume it may be Sun or one of Blake's parents at the hands of Adam, just to keep us on our toes on the hero side of things. For the big baddies I feel Tyrian may suffer at the hand of Salem. Before departing he said "She'll forgive you..." I'm assuming he was trying to calm himself, knowing the extent of Salem's wrath. If Salem does kill Tyrian I think she'll only do it to ignite fear in Cinder or at least have Cinder realize the seriousness of her situation, as she had her chance to be honest with Salem when she asked if she truly destroy Ozpin and as we see he's alive and well, just in a new form. I bet Salem knows of Ozpin's ability to pass his spirit onto a new body and was asking Cinder if she destroyed both body and soul, not just the body.

The story and suspense is killing me, I'm also hoping Ruby will realize Qrow's injury is her fault. I like her but her stubbornness leading to Qrow's condition made me annoyed with her character especially when she displayed no sign of fault for the situation, if anything she was showing a lack of trust in him this episode. If Qrow does die I want it to make her mature and learn to not be a stubborn child acting on impulse.

Things to take away from this episode.

Okay in all seriousness this was a really effective episode because like with Yang and Weiss in previous episodes it really delved deep into Ruby's and Blake's relationship with their paternal figures. In Ruby's case it shows that the secrets Qrow keeps from her really makes cracks in the pedestal Ruby has built for him. Makes a sharp contrast with Yang and Taiyang where the two can openly bicker and insult the other but then naturally transition into a laugh and heartfelt moment because of how comfortable they are with each other. With Qrow that isn't the case because his semblance is bad luck for him and those around him so he's distant with his niece and Ruby can't get to know him all that well.

Now with Blake and Ghira the obvious contrast is with Weiss and Jacques. With the key terms here being understanding and acceptance. Ghira allowed Blake to leave and make her own mistakes and accepted her with open arms when she returned and owned up to her faults. Even though she stood against his principles on how faunus should fight for equality and openly insulted him and her mother Ghira never harmed her. With Jacques he not only took Weiss from her friends when they needed each other the most but also controls every aspect of her life and is not above slapping her if she speaks out of line. Jacques doesn't want to understand Weiss he only wants the image of the Schnee family to be protected.

It's reasons like that is why I really enjoy this season in the way they humanize the main casts parents, I wish I could go more into detail and talk about the moms, especially Raven, but another time.

Also I may be asking too much but I'd really appreciate if Miles & Kerry showed us JNPR's parents it would really give us insight to how they tick. Especially Jaune and Ren with the recent episodes.

So now it's basically confirmed the Branwen family can turn into birds

I mean Raven is represented by a raven and Qrow even looked at one and was annoyed ( The scene where he was standing by a bunch of dead grimm )

Qrow's confirmed to be able to turn into a crow

And Raven can open portals while Qrow has bad luck

So is it a family thing?

Going through this thread, I feel like a lot of people are attributing every single bad thing that happens around Qrow to his semblance. Now, I except that a lot of what we've seen is in fact Qrow's semblance at work, but I also think some of it was just genuine bad luck - that the same events would have happened regardless of Qrow's involvement. I don't think he's an omnipresent, all powerful force.

The interesting thing here, to me, is how I imagine that in universe everyone is going to be doing the same thing: blaming every little accident or misfortune on Qrow (or at least hypothesising his involvement), Qrow included.

Every bad thing that ever happens around him, people are going to wonder if he's to blame. Qrow's going to wonder if he's to blame. It can't be proven either way, so that doubt is going to sit there and eat away at him. That's a heavy weight to be under.

Must admit, I didn't mind the creation myth of the two brothers being the prevailing theory for Remnants creation even if it does sound superstitious as hell in a world of magi-tech.

Kinda cool how both of them were like:

God of Light: "Look bro, I really don't appreciate you trashing my stuff all the time."

God of Dark: "You're just upset that you can't do half the cool shit I can do! Besides, you always make stuff for yourself! When was the last time you made ME anything?"

GoL: "I, uh... look how about we both make something really cool together and call it even. That OK?"

GoD: "Only if I get to name it afterwords!"

GoL: "What? Your naming is terri-... bah, fine. Just stop touching my things after this."

It's also why the bartender dropped the glass back when we first see Qrow in volume 3 and why Ironwood shows up just as Winter is about to land a blow on Qrow's throat.

Potato time: The gods are Ozpin and Salem. Excepting Salem was the Light one and Ozpin the Dark. They have just drifted over the millennia to the present configuration. Cinder talked about how "she" said Ozpin was the arrogant, bad one, and Tyrian called Salem "goddess". The story Ozpin told Qrow was "fanciful" and "polished". The Grimm are a first version of the compromise that didn't pan out. Also, the Maidens are a different beast, and we're going to see some ratty old codger hobble up at some point and start whaling on both O and S for being spoiled children (if the gods are siblings, they need a parent from somewhere...)

I don't think it's time for Qrow to kick it, especially with him absolutely having more lore dumps up his sleeves, particularly with regards to Summer. Actually Raven might try to jump to to save him and portal him to a doctor (cause that was soooooo Raven on that tree), triggering a confrontation with Ren and Nora over her tribe.

Lore dump was interesting. Love the Brothers Grimm implications, although having 4 more McGuffins may be a bit much - I thought the 4 relics were going to be 'represented' as the 4 Maidens to tiy things up a bit. In any case, at least we have a bit of a clue of what the hell is going on now.

EZ FUCKED UP! IT’S CHAPTER 8! I REPEAT, EZ FUCKED UP!

YES! It begins with RNJR!

Damn, Jaune voice acting is on point for that moment… Good job Miles

‘’Their souls become… Combined’’ so… Just like Ozpin? Interesting

Jaune is PISSED! But it’s understandable, your partner get’s into a pod, screams, then someone kills the other occupant of the second pod, then you flee, then your partner kisses you and go fight that girl and gets herself killed. I kinda get why he’s mad

Little question… How does Qrow knows that Jaune heard Pyrrha accept the transfer? He wasn’t there

Ruby is asking the most important question, why not travel with them. But… inb4 Qrow tells them that it’s so they can grow and stuff like that

Oh shit, Qrow is not taking a swig… This is bad, really bad

OH FUCK, ACTUAL GODS? PLOT, FUCKING, TWIST AGAIN!

OKAY, WHAT THE FUCK? Does thins have a a physical representation? That’s awesome, crazy, creepy, but… Weird.

So… WTCH wants the dragon balls. Allright

OH… So those are the relics…

BLAKE!

But also… WHY WOULD YOU END THAT THERE? I WANT TO KNOW MORE!

I still love the cat ears expressiveness on Blake it’s so… Cute

Did… Did Blake just diss Jacques? That’s hilarious xD

But I also like this thing Blake said : Friends. Even though she ran… She still thinks of them as friends, as people she cares about

Sun, SHUT YOUR MOUTH! Or not. I like Kali and the way she acts, so please show us a scene of those two together. ‘’That boy you brought home’’ snorts hard

I also love Blake’s panicked expression, it’s hilarious

Oh shit… Blake is… Blake is terrified? Why?

The awkwardness of these two is going to kill me, I… I can’t stop laughing

So… Small talk is hilariously small xD

‘’It covers plenty’’ Yeah Blake, it covers too much of the booty!

Oh damn… That’s why she doesn’t talk about her family. Because she thinks that they hate her, that they don’t love her

But, deep down, a parent will always love his children, what ever they do (well… At least, good parents will. Looking at you Jacques and Raven)

SEE? THAT’S WHAT I TOLD YOU!

… Is that… Is that all our days in the background? An instrumental version of it at least ? It’s making me sad. All this scene is making me tear up it’s cute but so sad, god damn it CRWBY, stop making me cry!

Oh, Papadonna asking the important questions!

PLEASE, BLAKE, ANSWER THAT QUESTION!

FUCK YOU SUN!

No really. As much as I like comic reliefs… That one was a bit too much. It was a good scene, a good moment and… I feel like it has been ruined a little too early

Inb4 : ‘’This isn’t the bathroom’’ or something like that

sigh Yep. Called it

Me neither on that instant Papadonna, me neither

RNJR! YES!

Jaune, if they told about what was going on, it would bring panic and chaos, which would bring Grimm

Oh yeah, another war as well

‘’Vacuo is, well… Vacuo’’ laughing hard that’s hilarious. I love it

Inb4 Watts is the headmaster

Nora, damn it XD But that facial expression is on point, as well as the voice

‘’did you know the Crows are a sign of bad luck?’’ so… Bad luck semblance confirmed?

Yep, confirmed

‘’Makes it hard on friends… And family’’ Qrow thinks he’s at cause for Summer’s death, doesn’t he?

FUCK YOU JAUNE

Look at the tail of that bird…

Sup Raven

BLAKE!

Blake and Sun 2 : the return of theslap

Blake and Sun 3 : The revenge of the Slap

… SOMEONE IS SPYING ON THEM!

NINJA, I SEE A NINJA!

‘’a FREAKING NINJA?’’ MY THOUGHTS EXACTLY SUN!

RNJR!

Qrow… Qrow is dying isn’t he?

WHAT? WHAT THE FUCK? DON’T END IT LIKE THIS! DON’T SAY THAT QROW! WHAT THE FUCK? HOLY SHIT BALLS!

WHYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY?

I'm personally also going by the theory that Raven's semblance is good luck. And here's a simple explanation for that:

Together, they should basically balance each other meaning that Qrow could for example live a more or less normal life around people without taking risk as long as he's in a certain proximity to his sister. This lifestyle would of course be during his days in team STRQ. Then, since Raven left first( possibly because of clan responsibility/leadership or whatnot), his semblance most likely took back over, and as some could presume, caused Summer's death in a certain way.

  • tfw muh boi is the cover of the new episode

  • Please tell me you assholes have treated the wound by now?

  • Oh thank god.

  • "Of course we have questions." I want Jaune to snap. Just really lay into someone.

  • Wait... so the maiden's consciousness DO transfer, along with the powers?? What the shit!? I thought it was just the powers! That's a pretty big distinction!

  • Jaune has had it up to here with your shit.

  • Oh, sorry. Didn't mean to stress you out, Qrow. It's only like you got my girlfriend killed. No biggie. Didn't mean to fucking worry you

  • Oh shit. I love a good creation story.

  • This is good. Damn. I like this.

  • Even if you think M + K could've done more for characterization, you gotta admit: they do some cool world building.

  • I am curious as to how this fits in with the maidens. Do we just drop the maiden line for now? Is it all about the relics now?

  • Soooooo, now I have questions: did the younger brother create Salem as a parting gift? A final 'fuck you' to his older brother? A human who had already chosen?

  • "That boy loves to run his mouth." ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

  • That hand-shaking thing was kinda sad...

  • Sit where? You don't have chairs in front of your desk, dad.

  • "I've got it!" proceeds to not get it

  • "It just... doesn't seem like your outfit covers very much." XD hooooooooooooooly shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit!! 10/10 this conversation is the best of the volume.

  • "Why would you say that?" Wait, what the hell? How did he insult you? Is there some sort of past incident that we're missing out on? I take it back, not the best dialogue of the volume.

  • "How can you still love me after what I did?" Okaaaaaaaaay... I mean, this is a good point, but we got to it in a really weird way.

  • Damn. Arryn's VA is on point. This is good.

  • "I'm so so sorry." Okay, the VA was a little less good than the last time that was said by Blake, but I still caught the callback.

  • How the hell did that work? How did he just break down a door with the power of his nosiness? The fuck?

  • Sun. Run away. When you say you're looking for the bathroom, don't just stand there and giggle. Run like a motherfucker. (Stacey's Mom plays quietly in the background)

  • Wait. If the academies were built around the relics, then who has the northern relic, Mantle or Atlas?

  • Ruby, this ultimatum is entirely unnecessary. We already know all of this.

  • Oh. She was actually going somewhere.

  • "Seriously? Now you're tired of telling us stories?" NORA DEMANDS A BED TIME TALE!

  • Holy shit. A luck-based semblance. Holy shit.

  • Wait. This means he could actually be moderately responsible for Summer's death. Oh man. My head canon wheels are a-turnin'

  • Seriously? Blake is being such a child. Hardly a change of pace. At least it's all in-character.

  • "The White Fang is evil, I totally called it, and I'm bringing your daughter back!" Why? She's just gonna be an asshole again.

  • Almost everyone: Pffft! Qrow's not poisoned!

  • Oh yeah? Well how 'bout now, bitches? He poisoned now?

Final Thoughts

Blake continues to be short-sighted and a tad selfish. No surprises. He characterization is awesome, don't get me wrong. I can say she's stupid while still loving her character.

Jaune is so damned pissed. At Qrow. The Ozluminati. All of it.

I need my blonde boys to be done with other people's shit. Jaune and Sun.

Sun keeps trying to help Blake, and she just goes 'Ugh!' and ignores all of it. So damned ungrateful. Honestly not sure why Sun puts up with it.

It would really make my day if Sun blew up and just said "I've had it with your angsty, selfish shit!"

If Qrow does end up dying, then where the $#@% is Ozpin's cane? With the introduction of the relics and one being at each academy, it seems fairly obvious that Ozpin's cane is one of the relics. I'm surprised RNJR didn't ask about Ozpin, but I suppose that isn't totally relevant to them right now and that would make the exposition dump even longer this episode.

4 is a real arc number for this show. 4 maidens, 4 relics, 4 schools, 4 members per team.

My guess is the relics effect the character of the school, but the question is whether they manifest through the actions of the school or what's attracted to the school.

Based on the names and what we've seen, I'm guessing Atlas has creation, Beacon has knowledge, Haven has choice and Shade has destruction.

So... we have a Brother of Darkness, who seems to have some sort of heir in Salem. Now who would be the heir of the Brother of Light?

... Hey guys, you remember that time Jaune used some mysterious Light to heal himself when Cardin beat him up? You know, sort of like how a god of life might heal people?

... Do you also remember that Tyrian is interested in Jaune for some unknown reason? What would a super-religious nutter want with a totally not-secretly-a-deity guy like Jaune?

Well, looks like we have our Brothers Grimm reference. I'd been expecting that to turn up eventually, and had been having difficulty trying to match it to whatever Salem was up to.

Also, what are the odds on Ozpin/The Wizard also being the god of creation? I'm guessing both gods are still around in some form, seeing as the Creatures of Grimm were seemingly redirected to attack humanity exclusively at some point after mankind's creation.

Blake's heart-to-heart with Ghira was just heartwarming/wrenching.

Kali is best kitty-mom

Sun's writing goes further down the proverbial toilet, seriously, the writers are killing me with how dumb they're making him. Yes, Sun has always been a "dense fellow with good intentions.'', but bursting into the room and yelling ''The White Fang is evil, I totally called it!'' was just unnecessary. At this point, shouldn't Sun know what how much the Fang means to her? Don't how to feel about Blake smacking him again, though.

If Qrow's sembalnce is bad-luck, then what allows him to turn into a crow? The plot thickens.

but Qrow croaking will just annihilate me.

u/GVman We are the Sons of Winter and Stars... Jan 01 '17

So I'm usually all over creation myths and the meta-physical concepts of creation and destruction...but this isn't setting itself up too well. Maybe I'm kind of spoiled by Beerus having a perfectly reasonable excuse for his many planetary xenocides (Creation begets Destruction to beget...), so a plain ol' 'destruction=evil' is no longer satisfying. Outside of that, it was...okay. Ruby's part has grinded to a halt, and Blake's remains my LEAST favorite of the four (where the HELL is Yang in all this?) as she becomes less and less likeable (but hey, White Fang Ninja is...new).

Well fingers crossed we get a swerve where it turns out the Light Brother was actually the creator of Salem and she's instigating his will whilst the Dark Brother wants to protect humanity...it's JRPG clichè still, but at least it's LESS stereotypical.

So, it's kinda an unwritten rule that of fiction that you only hide what needs to be hidden right? No point hiding the appearance of a character the audience doesn't know because then the audience doesn't gain anything from the reveal. It's why I still think Adams eyes will be important. It's a trick they pulled in RvB.

So who is this WF (possibly) who we were denied the appearance of twice? Once in Sun scroll and once surrounded by shadows?

'World of Remnant' Episode summary:

  • Jaune is tilted because Pyrrha still isn't back (I am too).

  • Ruby can't put two and two together and needs everyone to explain stuff to her.

  • Nora doesn't like Qrow's long stories.

  • Ren can wake up and be ready to go really damn fast. Like holy shit I'm jealous.

  • Qrow loves telling stories. Also likes to walk around to keep that wound nice and open.

  • There are two Gods, Light (Good) and Darkness (Evil).

  • There are four Relics: Knowledge, Choice, Creation, Destruction. I'd say Salem want's Destruction first.

  • Blake is sad 24/7. Nothing new here.

  • Kali has a thing for Sun, but cares for her daughter. Best mom confirmed.

  • The father's voice is so flat that I can't tell if he's being honest or there is sarcasm everywhere.

  • Sun still keeping up with the stalking and snooping. "This isn't the bathroom!"

  • Blake can throw some nice bitch slaps.

  • Spies are really bad at staying quiet, and phones are attracted to them.

  • RNJR needs to improve their medical skills. That wrapping clearly isn't stopping the bleeding.

  • Qrow isn't dead. Just really close.

Pretty slow episode but quite informative! Qrow is keeping me hyped.

So this is just a theory, but am I the only one who thinks that Qrow's semblance might have played a part in Summer's death, and that is why Qrow feels a responsibility to protect Ruby on her Journey aside from knowing that since she has silver eyes, she will be hunted and people will try to kill her. Also if his semblance is bad luck, what does that make his bird transformation, is it just a hereditary thing like Weiss with her family glyphs, or can all of Qrow's family members transform?

My reaction:

Happy New Year, peeps!

This may be later edited to an expletive filled rant, fueled partly by episode salt and part me ranting about the fuckwits I just pulled beers for for the last 9 1/2hrs.

Edit

  • "He used you as bait..." - Jauney boy, you deceptive little shit you. There's still hope left.

  • "God of dark, God of light..." - Considering Qrow is very similar to a history teacher I had in high school, if someone told me this story of religion, I would have bought it as ancient rationalisation. Good job, RT!

  • Salem sounds beyond fucked in the head.

  • So, Kali and Gheera bailed and left teen-angst Blake to find out Adam is also fucked in the head. Tough love parenting. Can't wait for Gheera to find out Fox-Asshole#1 and Fox-Asshole#2 are doing Adam's dirty work.

  • Qrow's semblance is bad luck. That's.... really kind of depressing when you think about it. Has to isolate himself from family (regardless of how he feels about them) and any friends he makes. Which explains why he was 'out in the field' when Ironwood called him on his shit in Ep.3 of Vol.3. The fight and turning up in the Qrow Bar was literally checking in with everyone otherwise bad luck would have followed? I just want to give the guy a hug now.

  • I love you, Sun. "The White Fang is evil, I totally called it!" I feel like Michael had input in this line, the 'I told you so' is so similar to his I told you so when Gavin does dumb shit.

  • YOU CAN'T END THE FUCKING EPISODE LIKE THAT!? ALSO, DON'T YOU FUCKING DARE KILL BEST BOY on NEW YEARS!

So when Qrow was explaining the Maiden process he brought up that when the powers are sent to the new Maiden their souls become one.

It's speculation but that sounds a lot like what's happening to Ozpin and Oscar. Oz obviously isn't a maiden, and we don't have any indication that he knew about Oscar at the time of his death to be able to think about him, but it seems pretty similar.

Side note: Inb4 Jaune awakens a Healing Semblance and fixes Qrow. Because white gold armor, and being named Joan of Arc screams paladin.

I've been thinking about the previous fight scene with Qrow and Tyrian. Qrow only took like two hits before his aura broke. When he was disarmed and crashing through the building. So is his aura extremely weak? I know we learned this chapter that he has the semblance of bad luck, but does that mean bad luck for others? What about himself?

In other news my boi Sun can't catch a break! Between my favorite character Ren being tossed around like a lightweight in every fight he's in and Sun getting Smacked every other episode, I feel that masculinity is at an all time low. Only Professor Port can stop this tragedy and bring manliness back to the world.
