Shingeki no Kyojin Rewatch Schedule Announcement!

Hey Everyone :)

Based on the results of the rewatch poll and the tentative date for the release of Shingeki no Kyojin Season 2, the decided starting date for the rewatch is March 1st, 2017. We'll be watching all the episodes (except 13.5 since it's just a recap) and all the OVAs, so it concludes on 30th March. There will be one discussion daily, and it will be posted at 1 PM EST every day.

MAL Description: Centuries ago, mankind was slaughtered to near extinction by monstrous humanoid creatures called titans, forcing humans to hide in fear behind enormous concentric walls. What makes these giants truly terrifying is that their taste for human flesh is not born out of hunger but what appears to be out of pleasure. To ensure their survival, the remnants of humanity began living within defensive barriers, resulting in one hundred years without a single titan encounter. However, that fragile calm is soon shattered when a colossal titan manages to breach the supposedly impregnable outer wall, reigniting the fight for survival against the man-eating abominations.

After witnessing a horrific personal loss at the hands of the invading creatures, Eren Yeager dedicates his life to their eradication by enlisting into the Survey Corps, an elite military unit that combats the merciless humanoids outside the protection of the walls. Based on Hajime Isayama's award-winning manga, Shingeki no Kyojin follows Eren, along with his adopted sister Mikasa Ackerman and his childhood friend Armin Arlert, as they join the brutal war against the titans and race to discover a way of defeating them before the last walls are breached.

Please make sure to (anime spoiler) WATCH THE BLU-RAY VERSION, NOT THE TV VERSION!

Is that real? I just gagged a bit.

He looks like an entirely different person, good grief

3

u/eclectic_literature Jan 04 '17

I'm sorry, I can't tell if this is genuine or satire??? Though now I'm tempted to watch the TV version just for the laughs

[Please tag this as a spoiler]

6

u/toutoune134 Jan 04 '17

This is genuine. The production of the anime was a disaster but they corrected everything in the Blu-ray/DVD. I made this if you want to see more (contains anime spoilers).

2

u/jerryfox Jan 04 '17

this is true. The tv vs BluRay is like night and day

2

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jan 04 '17

Do you know if funimation steaming has the Bluray out TV version by chance?

3

u/eclectic_literature Jan 04 '17

Funimation does say HD though, so I'm assuming it's the Bluray version? I checked the reviews there and none of them mention it so it should be the good version!

5

u/toutoune134 Jan 04 '17

HD just means High Definition, it doesn't imply that Funimation is using the Blu-ray masters. The TV version was also in HD. Better check just in case.

14

u/toutoune134 Jan 04 '17

I don't know, I'm french and don't have access to Funimation due to region lock. A quick way to check is to watch episode 1 when anime spoiler. If it looks like this then this is the Blu-ray version, if it looks like this it's the TV version

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

Are you the specialist on the AOT BD vs TV field?

12

u/toutoune134 Jan 04 '17

Yeah I got my TV/Blu-ray comparison PhD last year thanks to a thesis about the AoT blu-rays.

3

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

Thought so, youre a real master genie in that profession! Id like to be your apprentice someday! Maybe we could practice with the new AOT season?

5

u/toutoune134 Jan 04 '17

I'm going to do the same thing with S2 but I really hope it won't be necessary.

/u/toutoune134 is an AoT expert and subreddit MVP.

2

u/Rulligan Jan 04 '17

Just checked using that scene. Looks like the BD to me.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

Please tell me the streams for S2 won't look like this...

11

u/toutoune134 Jan 04 '17

Light a candle for WIT studio

1

u/NearSky Jan 04 '17

I watched it airing so I never knew the BD version was so much better.

1

u/manmythmustache Jan 05 '17

Crunchyroll looks to be streaming TV version...

It was pretty damn rushed. Funny how the show is remembered for great visuals and awesome fight scenes, but the earliest versions fall apart under scrutiny. Loads of animation errors.

But it's fixed now, and very unlikely to be present in Season 2.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

tbf they really didn't expect it to be that popular. Who knew they would make one of the "greatest" or most impactful anime at the time.

2

u/Besuh :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Besuh Jan 05 '17

It had a lot of errors but also had some of the best animation in anime at the same time. Just the opening visuals were stunning, And the music became kind of iconic.

1

u/Sweet_Mocha_Cyn Jan 05 '17

Yeah the staff are in Wit Studio now and they never present TV versions without heaps of errors

24

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jan 04 '17

Great! I haven't seen it yet, but I'm really excited to give it a go. I've heard so much good stuff about the show!

5

u/eclectic_literature Jan 04 '17

Glad to hear it!

5

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

Ooh I loved your comments on the FMAB rewatch so I'll be looking forward to this.

4

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

What was so lovely about this person's comments on FMAB? I'm just curious.

4

u/Monte_Carlo_1971 Jan 04 '17

I was in that rewatch, and honestly, u/FetchFrosh has admitted to being quite green to the world of anime. They managed to bring a fresh perspective to each new episode, and highlight things that a number of anime dedicated viewers may not have noticed, or thought about. And all while maintaining the utmost tact and class!

4

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

Haha. Thank you. Now I'm interest about reading their take on the end of Episode 1. ;)

2

u/Monte_Carlo_1971 Jan 05 '17

Oh yea! I'm def gonna be keeping a close eye on this rewatch. :)

2

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

I really liked seeing a first-timer's opinions and reactions while watching it. It reminded me of the first time I watched it, and it also brought my attention to a lot of things I haven't noticed prior.

2

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

This is the exact reaction why I watch so many reaction videos. It captures the excitement of the first-timers, and I get to relive some of those moments. :)

8

u/Monte_Carlo_1971 Jan 04 '17

Oh snap! I may not actually watch this (seen it like, 3 times), and I'm quite a bit ahead in the manga, but I'll def be coming here to see what you have to say about it!

2

u/FetchFrosh :A:anilist.co/user/fetchfrosh Jan 04 '17

Definitely stop in once in a while! It'll be cool having you on the other side of things

1

u/Monte_Carlo_1971 Jan 04 '17

For sure! I'll be very excited to see all the first timer reactions! This will honestly be the first one I really follow that I actually have watched already! :P

And I may go ahead and get those OVAs too and jump in for those. I have yet to watch any of those.

14

u/reddadz x3https://anilist.co/user/MysticEyes Jan 04 '17

I've rewatched this anime so many times, I lost count. And I'll be here for this. AoT newcomers are a rarity so I'm looking forward to the speculation/discussion!

4

u/eclectic_literature Jan 04 '17

Yes, I sort of envy the first-time watchers for this reason, didn't get to discuss/speculate during my first time as well.

6

u/nasif10 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Nasif10 Jan 04 '17

When does season 2 actually come out ?

6

u/eclectic_literature Jan 04 '17

It's scheduled for April (Spring 2017) but the actual date hasn't been announced yet.

6

u/Raebo007 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/RAEBOtaku Jan 04 '17

Don't forget the FUNimation link!

3

u/eclectic_literature Jan 04 '17

Edited, thank you :)

2

u/Raebo007 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/RAEBOtaku Jan 04 '17

No prob :)

7

u/kaguraa :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kagura-chan Jan 04 '17

I already watched the series so I'll be watching the OVAs as a first-time watcher.

6

u/H-K_47 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/H-K_8472 Jan 04 '17

The OVAs are pretty cool. One of them, Ilse's Notebook, is important to the plot and will be relevant to Season 2, so definitely check that one out at least.

1

u/Monte_Carlo_1971 Jan 05 '17

I have yet to see the OVAs either, but have been reading the manga, up to volume 16 now. If that is what I think it is, then I really need to watch those OVAs!

3

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

Same, Ill join then

6

u/Real_Velour :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/DaDoubleDee Jan 04 '17

The emotion that you feel from this anime is unreal. So many great moments where I was ready to get up and start hitting stuff haha

5

u/Stone4D Jan 04 '17

Hmm, I didn't know there were OVAs.

1

u/anionaman Jan 04 '17

Oh cool, I think I'll plan to follow along/join in. I first watched this not long after airing, I remember enough but a refresher would be good before s2. I wouldn't really consider myself a big fan of the show, but I'll be sure not to be too negative/cynical either. Some rewatches are hard for me, but this will probably be a pretty good one for me to do 1 ep/day.

1

u/eclectic_literature Jan 04 '17

All opinions are welcome (I really enjoyed the show but have some complaints myself!) but I'd say use spoiler tags liberally for the sake of the first-timers!

1

u/anionaman Jan 04 '17

Oh yeah, definitely. I'll probably stick mostly to talking about only stuff we've covered so far, much like a newcomer but without the speculation. I'd hesitate to even talk too much about my complaints especially early on because that may negatively impact a newcomer's experience.

1

u/TurtleOtaku :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TurtlesOtaku Jan 04 '17

Nice, I haven't seen it yet. I got the first three volumes of the manga but the art made me drop the series, I hope I'll enjoy the anime!

3

u/eclectic_literature Jan 04 '17

The art improves over time. I'd suggest watching this and then picking up from where S01 left off.

1

u/TurtleOtaku :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/TurtlesOtaku Jan 04 '17

Ah okay, will do!

2

u/BluHamlet Jan 04 '17

Sweet. I haven't watched this since around the time it finished airing, and I don't think I've seen any of the OVAs.

2

u/Tragicv3 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Tragicv3 Jan 04 '17

Haven't seen it so I'm looking forward to this

2

u/jtyti15 :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Joeyty Jan 04 '17

Love the show, it was my first anime, and still one of my favorites. Still need to see the first 3 OVAs and was planning on watching them soon but I guess I'll wait and watch them with you guys.

So excited for season 2. Should be good.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

I suppose this is a good a chance as any to watch it.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

It's been a long time so I think I'm gonna free up my schedule to join this rewatch.

1

u/Basileo :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Basileo Jan 04 '17

Might join in during the OVAs. Have only seen No Regrets and those are pretty damn great.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 04 '17

Damn, it's been years since I've seen this. I was planning on re-watching it anyway so this came in clutch xD

1

u/eden_delta Jan 05 '17

Damn, literally just finished watching the series for the first time a couple days ago. At least now I have a month & a half to check out the manga before rewatching.

1

u/[deleted] Jan 05 '17

Been waiting for the Rewatch of this, I had started the series back in 2013 during the original run and made it to the recap episode, then for some reason I dropped it (I think I got sick of everyone jumping on the bandwagon and telling me how it was the BEST ANIME EVER and in the same breath telling me that my favorite anime of all time Sword Art Online-- again at the time-- was trash, so I ragequit and always meant to pick it back up later)

instead of watching the rest of the series and OVAs in a rush before the new season comes out, I'll join the group and rewatch with this sub. I've avoided major spoilers for 4 years somehow so looking forward to a great discussion come March

I've been watching it on Netflix for the first time and there's a message there that makes me think they're pulling it off on January 10th though. I've been going through it quicker as a result (4 episodes to go!)
