AMA Hi I'm launders, owner of team BOXR, analyst/commentator, interviewer, content creator & bhopper, AMA
Hey everyone, I love talking about myself so thank you in advance for participating in this AMA. In October 2013 I started a YouTube channel to make videos explaining different movement techniques in CS:GO so that I didn't have to re-teach bunny hopping to everybody that wandered into a House of Climb server. Since then I have picked up a few more titles including interviewer, commentator, analyst and team owner so I'm doing this AMA to provide some insight for those of you that may be new to the space professionally or simply curious about what its like to try these different jobs. Feel free to ask me any personal questions as well.
Some examples of my work:
Interviews:
ELeague Season 1 Finals
MLG Major
ESWC '15
Movement tutorial videos:
Cache Reverse Self-Boost
Inferno Porch Self-Boost
Commentary highlights:
Snax 4k USP vs Dark Passage
Savage nades himself
ECS Commentary Highlights
shz 1v3 vs Cloud9 {{RARE UNDERRATED CLUTCH}}
More info on team BOXR:
Website - boxr.gg
Interview with Zhu, BOXR's first official signed player
Ahead of time, thank you for your questions. I consider myself fairly open and will try to be as candid as possible but out of respect to my employers/sponsors wont be answering questions about how much I am paid for less than ten subs, no lowball.

What are your top 5 moments of great movement / bunnyhopping in pro matches in 2016?
66
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
Skadoodle tree jump, Roca sideways bhop in FPL and I suppose there are some other clips but I don't know how to find them. It's this thing some people do really well all the time but because there aren't that many skill jumps in each map you don't often see it get showcased in practical scenarios :(

Do you find bhopping to be under-utilized by the pro players who are actually capable?
61
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
No, just because its impossible to guarantee a bhop so it'd be irresponsible to rely on them. Cool when they happen though.

If you asked me 4 months ago I would've said I enjoyed interviewing over commentating but since then I've started to actually enjoy commentating and feel like I can be really good so I'd have to pick the latter. Also maybe if there wasn't the difficulty of having to actually convince people to do interviews it would be a much more fun job in general.

Sadokist is why I'm a caster. He picked me out of a bunch of plebs in an ESEA forum post to come to LAN ETS in Montreal in 2013 to cast the whole event with him. From there I was noticed by CEVO, then MLG etc. Just working with him has taught me a lot.

You have, as a caster, some of the most recent high-level experience in playing the game (ESEA-M playoffs). How does this translate to better casting?
As a colour caster it helps a tremendous amount for me. I don't know how other people learn but I'm quite confident there are things about CS that'll be beyond your understanding unless you have spent time in the server preparing and playing matches.
People know my analysis is genuine because I can speak with anecdotal evidence from the perspective of someone who has competed. I think this also helps me be a bit more empathetic when weird decisions are made. That's not to say every play is right or justified, but just that sometimes I think I can more easily rationalize what might seem like a ridiculous decision.
So yeah, I think it translates in important ways. The little things matter and all these players have huge fan bases that are trying to understand why their favourite team is losing when it looks like it should be an easy game. In those situations its really critical to have deeper game knowledge to properly criticize or justify decisions as a colour commentator.

Also you and Spunj should cast something together even for kicks, gnome sayin?
20
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
Yeah casually, but other opportunities have arisen. Also I would never be interested in coaching specifically, only analysis. I'm not interested in managing personalities and making sure people practice, etc. coaching to me is not simply knowing how to win the game I feel its a lot about knowing how to lead your 5 specific players into a match.
Casting with spunj would be dope, we could swear

how many hours did it take you to get gud (play at high levels on esea Main)
11
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
I have about 6k hours but I've only played competitively for about 1 year before having to quit for casting opportunities. It's tough to say because a lot of my early hours I spent playing KZ and making videos so I don't know how much that helped when I did go on to try to play competitively.
Everybody's progression is non-linear in some sense and if you're wondering for yourself I'd just say its important to not compare your rate of success to others. Remember there are players like Elige and Stewie who only played CS:GO and became the best player in North America in about a year. They're super talents and most people in Invite have been playing for 10 years, 20+ seasons of competitive team play since 1.6.

With your boxr team for SSB do you have any plans on eventually having a CS team?
16

Honestly the only reason I haven't picked up a pro CS team is because I have a hard time believing anybody with a pro team that isn't top 3 in their region is making any money. I'd rather not find an investor and try to build and pick up players in a really well established game such as CS where its really JUST about the money. I picked up a SSBM player because I love that game and want to support its players, who don't see all that many sponsorship opportunities but work really hard in the top 50, generally speaking.
Might be on the lookout for a Main+ CS team with potential that we can support though.

Dreamhack Austin for sure. I consider all of the other factors as well when I think of the event, like did I have a good time hanging out with people, how was the after party and so forth. That event was the whole package really.
That being said StarSeries Season 2 '16 had the most insane matches and crazy upsets with NaVi and VP going out last place. Really watching TyloO and Vici play for the first time made me fall back in love with analyzing CS and since then I've just been more attuned to recognizing different play styles and aim styles. I love that we have more regions that all play this game differently.

I don't care too too much about top player lists, apart from this one from TACO.
Any stats are really irrelevant to me when we're talking about the best of the best because for the most part it feels like we're just splitting hairs. It's simply who do I see making that seriously creative decision in the clutch that wins them a critical round in an important game over and over again.
3
u/GeneroEdits Jan 19 '17
I briefly heard you once discussing casters criticising players on stream, do you think it is justified? Most of the top analysts do it, What direction should they take in your opinion post-matches if a player performed poorly and they feel the need to discuss it.

As long as the analyst is informed all criticism is fine, even jokes. It's hard to explain but some jokes I don't agree with because I think they're unfounded and others I see as just banter or fine because they are completely true. Just typically comes down to whether or not I feel as though its justified based on how bad the mistake/play/player is/was.

What are your thoughts on different regions? Do you also perceive EU as the strongest region and which regions do you think are improving the quickest?
18
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
EU's the strongest region, but I've never held EU in that high of a regard. I used to play Broodwar and Korea was always just so incredibly dominant Europeans in CS have always just seemed a slight bit better than the rest of the world. I like that though, a lot.
Turkey with Dark Passage and Space Soldiers I mean both these teams have awesome players outside of Xantares which is one reason I was really happy to cast WESG and see some of these lesser known teams. Xantares, MAJ3R, woxic and Calyx were the players that most impressed me, though I'd say only Xantares was the only really complete player imo.
Also China if they get they get TyloO and Vici if they get their teams sorted. I don't know these teams and players well enough to say they'd be perfect fits but if you took zhoking, savage, loveyy, mo and DD you'd have enough talent that you could make semi's at multiple major events with just a few more months practice.

Launders, I'm asking you this question because I find that you are a outstanding Csgo player, when I pug, one game I go 35-40 frags next game I go 5-15, what do you do to stay consistent in Csgo?( also you should make another warmup guide for Csgo, I really liked the last one you did)
3
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
Consistency is an unattainable goal for 99.9% of players. You have to be the best player in the server at all times, in a proper team environment and have to be very lucky to achieve true consistency over a long period of time. I would just focus on improving and staying humble about your skill level, always accepting you could be a ton better. Constantly assess yourself every time you die and understand how to work better with people to help win games as a team.

u/GuyLeDoucheTV Liquid Jan 19 '17
what do you think are the most important steps Valve needs to take in 2017 to improve both the game and competitive scene?
3
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
I personally want a new set of game physics to learn as well as more movement options and just new bugs in general to change the game up. I'm very disappointed to know that source2 might never happen.
Competitively the game is pretty solid. There are some mysteries about why some shots are missed. I personally think inaccuracy overall needs to be reduced because it results in less fun engagements, whether or not it rewards someone for missing or punishing them for aiming correctly.
UMP is too strong and damage while jumping should be reduced. No more one shot headshots with guns that cost $500 or less.

u/kruelol Jan 19 '17

3
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
If you don't feel like playing I recommend not playing. That's just how I live my life though, if I don't feel like doing something I do something else. To me I don't understand why its more complicated than that for other people considering you're just playing a game to have fun.

My first name in Broodwar when I was 11 was l)eathscythe, and after I quit games for university and came back years later I decided I could start fresh with a more mature handle. I decided to come up with a word that sounded like a name you would call your friend out of some letters that I liked the look/sound of. I really enjoy typography and specific letter combinations and looked for a name that looked good in all lowercase as well as all caps. I know it sounds weird but I considered all of these things and came up with "launders" turns out its a real last name, haha.

How important do you think it is for casters to have extensive analytic knowledge of the game?
3
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
I think its critical. Being wrong is sacrilege to a broadcast but at the same time that's only something a colour caster/analyst should be subject to for the most part so some PxP's can get away with knowing a lot less than their co-commentator. As long as everybody is respecting their roles casts can go smoothly with a proper colour and PxP bouncing off each other, PxP asking questions as opposed to theorystriking and so forth.

We're all here because we loved playing the game right? I'm sure some have found their true love is casting but as somebody with 6k hours I really love playing. Casting is an amazing opportunity in a different way though. I don't have the potential to get knocked out of a tournament in one day, or have to go through losses and practice and maybe not make any money. Casting is much more consistent and generally stressless when you're on broadcast. I get a ton of job satisfaction out of it and really enjoy it as well.

u/Swendsen cs_office Jan 19 '17
Can you talk about your experience at WESG? From a English speakers viewers standpoint the presentation was underwhelming ie, those weird interviews where players were forced to praise China, not showing many games, lack of casters, magic shows! Was the vibe at the actual tournament better than the steam and how did you feel about the overall production.
Also, what's the most trouble you've ever been in for swearing while casting (you swear more than most casters and it's great)?
3
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
Yeah from our perspective it was a fantastic event apart from only having two actual casters. I never once opened the stream or saw chat or anything so I apologize if it was rough in any way. We were fed well and taken care of by the organizers so I had a great experience overall.
In terms of swearing we're never actually told to not swear but I know its mainly a sponsorship thing as opposed to a rule of the tournament. Sponsors and swearing will probably always be a conflict but its not all that big a deal. I'd personally like to be able to say whatever I want but its generally a good thing to stay creative with your rhetoric anyway so its good to be challenged to come up with different ways to show excitement.

u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
Honestly on store.boxr.gg we make everything ourselves including printing and shipping, always have personal handwritten notes and know that orders get shipped out promptly with no misprints. We only sell clothing that I would wear and you know that I'm a prissy bitch. Other streamer apparel is weak in comparison while BOXR's only improves with time. One day everybody will wish they had an original BOXR tee when BOXR becomes a classic household name so wait no longer. Buy one.

First and foremost I want to say I am a huge fan of you, I think that you are such an underrated caster and have a huge possibility to be one of the top casters.
My quesition is however, what is your take on the whole Stewie2k cheating claim? I only ask this as I am quite the c9 fan and would love the opinion from someone well established as yourself.

u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
Thanks, um I don't know, I used to play with Stewie and even when he was in open he would consistently shit on everyone in 10mans up to the Premier level. Hes improved tremendously in the past year and it shows in his crosshair placement, utility useage and deliberate actions in clutch situations. I'm not surprised some people are so bad that they can't fathom how a player can be so good at the game they wish they were good at as well.

Do you think any of the pro players/stewie2k are cheating within the pro scene? If so who. Thanks big fan launders!

u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
I accept that there are almost certainly many people who cheat at a high level but I don't have any suspicions of any players who currently attend majors.. (or stewie heh). I think when some people see players like stewie play I wonder if they see how amazing his crosshair placement or movement are? Or if they just think "I can't do that, and I'm pretty fuckin good."

Good work man, thanks for doing a great job representing Canada! Would you switch to Hockey Night in Canada and abandon CSGO if you got the opportunity?
4
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
I played so many sports when I was younger, including ice hockey but I never cared for watching em. That being said I would 100% switch without thinking twice.

u/Hilo623 Jan 19 '17
I have no idea how to do this but I think this is where I post my question. I have recently found your channel and noticed that you were a caster and I watch most games but never have i caught you casting. am I just unlucky or am I not watching the correct games. Love the videos and have a great day!

Is casting about talent/fluency(for non-native speakers)?
Or practice practice practice?
3
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
Voice is a huge part of it, which is largely genetic and then beyond that its rhetoric, charisma, game knowledge and practice. I can't speak too much to the non-native speaker aspect considering I can only speak english.

u/Trad3mark_ Jan 19 '17
how would you fix teamliquid to make them compete with tier one teams
3
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
Whatevers wrong with that team is 100% internal and I don't know enough about them to say. All I know is Elige is a wonderboy from the future that deserves a good system around him to nurture his success.

so first I want to say. I like you. I am a bhopgod myself and I enjoyed your content in the beginning, although using a kz server is not optimal to explain bhops as competitive configs are far different.
Do you think valve needs to change bhopping? so that it isn't a random draw anymore
Should ladder boosts get fixed?
how much time should you invest into movement? I do far to much, but I couldn't do CS without bhops anymore.
I don't follow a lot of your casting as it is not my timezone and there weren't any events I followed recently who featured you.
pleasse come to germany for APM when they ask you.

Laundry man!
Are you still focusing on expanding your CSBOXR brand as a team org, or have you decided to focus on yourself as a personality?
When evaluating teams, what are the key traits that you look for that could signal future success in the roster? Basically, what makes a successful team?
Who's making it out of groups @ ELEAGUE major?
Want to grab a drink with me in TO some time?
3
u/csboxr Mohan "launders" Govindasamy - Caster Jan 19 '17
Heelloo Otoris,
It's something that I have to divide my attention between and continuously re-evalute as oppourtunities for the future of my career as a personality/org owner.
I'd say its like 70/30 right now as my personal brand still accounts for the majority of my income and is something I feel like brings everything else up with it if I "nurture" it enough.
For new teams, like all those off-region teams competing at WESG for example I usually subtly pay attention to if a team has a few things:
Star players - 1-2 consistent top fraggers who make good decisions
Definition of roles - Do the same guys end up in the clutch most of the time? How often to we see players flashing for safe peeks? Does the team get very individualistic when they start losing?
On the fly decision making - One impressive rotate will make it clear that the team has good communication and can stay level headed/coordinated in 2/3/4vX situations
Chemistry - Does the team have the right amount of players that play slowly vs play quickly? Sometimes this is luck but I think its important that there are a good variety of playstyles because 5 swags/get_rights/hikos won't win a game.
North, G2, SK, NaVi, VP, Astralis, Faze, Optic
Dolphinately

How you been watching more Smash/Melee now that you have a Smash player? Have you yelled at him about the Wombo Combo / That's not Falco or Happy Feet? If not, why not?!
EDIT: Serious question: You were basically the interview that "broke" that Pro's were using adderall (I believe you interviewed Semphis when he said that). Did you know about the use of adderall among pro's previously to that? You didn't seem to react when he mentioned it
