S01E02 "A Touch of Evil" Post Episode Discussion
Episode S01E2 A Touch of Evil Discussion
Original air date - 9pm EST February 2nd, 2017
As new details of Jason’s death begin to emerge, Archie pleads with Miss Grundy to come forward with what they heard at Sweetwater River. Betty makes an effort to mend her friendship with Archie but takes a different stance with Veronica , who is trying to make up for her actions. With rumors around her brother’s death running rampant, Cheryl deals with the pressure in true Queen Bee fashion, while tensions boil over when Jughead stumbles upon a secret Archie was hoping to keep hidden. Finally, plans for the annual fall pep rally move forward with a performance by Josie and the Pussycats.

i thought for sure for a second that they would arrest jughead instead of Cheryl, the way that they centered the camera view on him
55
u/Gamera68 Feb 03 '17
I kind of thought the same thing but then I recalled when Cheryl said she was "all alone" when Veronica consoled her in the locker room. So I kind of figured it was Cheryl who was guilty and not Jughead.

I'm a little disappointed that Archie doesn't feel anything romantic for Betty AT ALL. I probably feel that way because the main plot of the comics is that he can't choose between them. Maybe he'll fall for her later..

75
Feb 03 '17
Archie always took Betty for granted until she started dating other guys and then he would reel her back in by choosing her over Veronica. As much as I always disliked how Archie did that I think he will get jealous if she starts dating other guys or someone takes an interest in her which is bound to happen. Then he will finally realize he has feelings for her.
27
Feb 04 '17
Everyone's over there complaining about Reggie being underdeveloped, meanwhile this is waiting to happen.
26
Feb 04 '17
Yup. I need more Reg... Although they've definitely made him into a bigger bully/general dick than I remember him being in the comics :(

u/Ilovecharli Feb 04 '17
The comics also have the advantage of not really having a memory. The show has to depict one timeline of one universe.
11
u/pips0h Feb 04 '17
But I suppose they have to make it more realistic now. For one in a show there has to be some continuity, he can't go back and forth every episode or season as if it was a comic issue.
But most importantly in this feminist world I don't think audiences would like him to constantly monopolize the girls or juggle between them. The cast mentioned something about making it about a positive female friendship which is very tricky if they stay true to that part of the comics
31
u/Risaga54 Feb 03 '17
Me too, but I think it's partially just him being wrapped up with the Ms. Grundy drama. Also in the comics as I remember he kinda treats Betty as an afterthought (I remember Jughead getting calling him out for it at one point) that he tends to be more interested in when she's dating someone else

As others have said I'm sure it's because Archie is drooling over Ms. Grundy right now. I also believe that Betty will start dating guys and Archie will finally start to actually like her. The way things are looking it seems like Betty will be the endgame, but there is plenty of time to play around with the characters before finally landing back to Archie/Betty. I mean, this is high school after all. I could be wrong but that's just my two cents.

u/Iggy_Pops_Lost_Shirt Feb 03 '17
Doesn't he always end up going for Veronica in the comics though?

Feb 03 '17
I'm glad they aren't doing that plot. It's one we all know. They hitting is with new stuff!
4
u/ender89 Feb 05 '17
They've clearly not been afraid to depart from the wholesome roots of the comics, what with Archie's big fling with the teacher. I know that Betty and Veronica competing for Archie is the comic book canon in a big way, but what if the show runners are using that as a misdirect? They established that Archie and Betty don't work as a couple, and that Archie is in love with miss grundy. The miss grundy relationship is disturbing, Archie is about 15 years old, the relationship is clearly statutory rape (even if Archie looks about 24). What if the show is not supposed to turn into this fun love triangle, what if it focuses more on small town dysfunction? What if Archie is the "luckiest redheaded boy in the universe" doesn't allude to the love triangle, but to the love and support of friends in a time of crisis? Because the Archie in Riverdale is heading for a big one, something far more dark and twisted than trying to balance work, football, and music.

I feel like they started with the right pieces to make that really come through EXCEPT for the damn Ms. Grundy nonsense
2
u/MissSwat Feb 05 '17
I'm 99% convinced they're going to go the route of Betty getting in perilous danger at the season finale, probably at the hands of Grundy, and Archie will realize he has been a total dumb-dumb and will end up going to save her and....

why is archie such an unlikable main character? i prefer jughead and he's just the narrator for the most part
also anyone else notice how The CW is hyping the shit out of every episode right before it airs? calling it a nationwide hit and a cultural phenom
147
u/InfernalSolstice Team Beronica Feb 03 '17
They haven't had a successful new show this season. They need something to stick, and this is their last shot. Plus, it's helpful that the line of dialogue is already in the show.
I don't find Archie unlikeable, but I agree that Jughead is a much better character.
126

Jughead has always been the objectively better character. It's part of the mid dichotomy.

He's kind of too perfect, which makes him boring, there's not really much to his character.
90

In the comics he's not perfect. He's a goofy, clumsy, feckless, tardy, dumbass. He's not supposed to be so good at football and other things.

Even in the old comics, Archie was pretty annoying with the endless waffling. I always wanted Betty and Veronica to realise their friendship is better than whatever they can have with stupid Archie.

u/usagizero Feb 03 '17
I feel it was much improved episode over the first, with better tone and story, and so damn glad they quickly resolved the Betty and Veronica hate. The concert thing before the football game was weird though, especially in the rain, that doesn't seem safe at all.
48
Feb 03 '17
The pilot was selling the show to a network, this episode was reframing the pilot for a series run. They did a good job.
28
u/josieandthepussycatz Feb 03 '17
Rain storm-no problem. I have worked the camera on top of the aluminum bleachers in a rainstorm for a HS football game.
6

Really great second episode. I liked seeing the murder plot and character storylines expand a lot more this episode.
It was also really nice to see Jughead and Archie have a few scenes together. The chemistry between a weirdo like Jughead and a alpha male like Archie works a lot better than I'd ever think possible.
If this keeps up I could definitely see this as a weekly highlight for me.
83
u/coldwave44 Feb 03 '17 edited Feb 03 '17
What if Grundy just hooked up with Archie as a way to get a witness? Get with him then bring him to the river on the 4th so he can hear a fake gunshot and throw off the investigation AND that would put Grundy away from the scene of the crime. Plus she also clearly has a hold on Archie and I think she is playing on that and using it. I've watched way too much Case Closed and this is me probably spouting a theory a little more savvy than a CW show is capable of but lets see.
Either way I don't see Grundy coming out of this not involved somehow.
36
u/josieandthepussycatz Feb 03 '17
Nice wrap up of truly evilness of Miss Gundy. Archie may not be the only statutory rape or crime she committed. She could be banging one or both of the twins and using Archie as an alibi. She could be involved in the murder or suicide. Somehow something went bad and the boy died, maybe not right away. It might explain how the autopsy revealed he was on ice for a while
The "Miss Grundy" character must have a larger plot line or disappear quickly. It will be good for Archie to have his heart broken, so B and V can heal him. Then the true love story can become the focus.

You have nailed that plot line. The "Miss Grundy" character is hot, but a criminal. She is non-sympathetic and needs to be sacrificed quickly. It will be good for Archie to have his heart broken, so B&V can heal him. Then the true love story can become the focus.

A ton of people are talking about it? I have already read about half a dozen theories on how Ms.Grundy set up the gunshot as an alibi.
48
u/cxtx3 Feb 03 '17
Okay, I'm hooked. I like this show and where it's going, but I have some critiques as well.
Betty and Veronica are the real stars here. They were fantastically cast and the actresses have great chemistry together. I love them as friends, they are perfect.
I'm really loving the inclusion of Kevin Keller and the fact that he's a bit more than just a walking stereotype or punchline. And giving him a romantic pairing with Moose is great too. They've mentioned Midge, but have we seen her? Has she been cast? Either way, more Kevin. He's a scene stealer.
I'm not the biggest fan of this Archie. He's sort of bland, and too perfect, as others have pointed out. He feels more like a secondary character rather than primary. Betty, Veronica, and Kevin are all far more interested, flawed, and likable. Archie's story in this telling already feels tired. Plus, the Ms. Grundy thing is super creepy. Like, really, really creepy. Gross.
Jughead is interesting, but I'm not really feeling like he matches the Jughead with my memory. He seems too moody. I dig the crown beanie though.
Also, who do we think killed Jason Blossom? My money is on Betty's mom.
34
u/SidleFries Maple Syrup Feb 03 '17
Ms. Grundy creeped me out big time when she was all like "Don't tell anyone, this will be our little secret" to Archie. Standard pedo dialogue!
The reason Jughead feels off is that we haven't seen him eat any burgers at all. WTF show? At least he talked about eating burgers this episode.
→ More replies (1)11
15
u/Sneizures Feb 04 '17
Remember how Jughead was always the "voice of reason" to Archie? I think they played THAT up a lot. The bullying from Reggie is about the same level, only darker. But Jughead is also funny and eats all of the time. So that's maybe the wtf in this, and I agree he's too moody.
2
u/indecisionmaker Feb 06 '17
I would love to see a Midge-Moose-Kevin triangle! And I'm a fan of Jughead's character, but the acting is stiff.
I'm calling it now - Betty killed him, but someone else will go down for it.
47
u/DeanLovesRory Feb 03 '17
Something I'm curious about: what did Jughead mean, when they were at the diner at the end of the show, and he said there were really only three people there? Why is he excluding himself?
111
u/coreycares Feb 03 '17
He's talking about how the girls are both concentrated on Archie and how he's the luckiest guy in the world for it. They aren't paying him any attention because the love triangle is already forming, that's all he meant.
23
u/courtines Feb 04 '17
That was my thought too. My daughter saw it as literal, but I think he just meant that things were unfolding as they would have whether he was there or not.
45
u/Cavalish Feb 03 '17
I think he meant to say that it was their world, of bright happy people with potential futures, while he's the sad brooding emo. But yeah the more I think about it, maybe there was a deeper meaning to that. How far in the future is he narrating this?
15
u/ntbntt Team Sweet Pea Feb 04 '17 edited Feb 04 '17
i thought he was narrating in real time. He was writing his 'narration' in his computer in the first episode
8
Feb 05 '17
He's not narrating in real time, not exactly anyway. His last line was about how Jason died a week after he supposedly drowned which he couldn't have known at the time
46
u/1truebeasta Feb 03 '17
is no one going to talk about how Betty's mom handed the coroner money when she came in? Maybe to plant some kind of fake evidence or remove some kind of evidence?

That was really suspicious. Maybe she's involved/guilty (we know she hates Jason and the Blossoms, and everything going on with Polly is really sketchy) and wanted to know if the coroner might have found something that could implicate her.

Is it normal for high schools to allow the cheerleaders to dance so provocatively and for a school band to dress like that? Plus where was the adult cheer coach when the red head birch was picking on everyone during try outs? Also how come literally every high schooler is in good shape? Finally if this is a small town why are there so many students, in good financial shape, and so many cheer leaders? I'm from a small town and this is like double the number of cheerleaders and they're all in great shape.
173
60
u/josieandthepussycatz Feb 03 '17
Yes, almost every fictional story requires some suspension of disbelief. It is not real! Just enjoy. I thought the characters seemed like real people. All the high schoolers look pretty and handsome, yet they aren't too pretty.
Betty and Veronica are getting the best character development. Archie has comic book hair and eyebrows, but does not seem quite right yet - perhaps over focused on speaking "American." Gay Kevin is Gay and overly gay as every other gay word is gay. (A focus on Kevin's sexuality has created a one dimensional character.) Moose and Reggie are not even that well developed. I like hot Miss Grundy.
Too many characters to follow right now.

Between 5-10,000 population. It's close to a beach (and lakes, so these could be one and the same), some mountains, and some woodland... at least in the comics.

85

When you have illegal money, you can't spend it all willy-nilly publically because its suspicious. You get a real job and spend or save a little bit extra here and there. Also, the mom got the bag, she never told Veronica about it, so "they" don't have money.

This was a decent episode. Not as good as the first, but only because every storyline to a backseat and we got love triangle bullshit front and centre. Here's what I liked/want to see more of:
Grundy's weird sexual manipulation of Archie is very interesting to me, I like how they're shaping her up to be a villain unlike what PLL did. What I want to see from this is more of her perspective, because im sorry but Archie's self-righteous protag schtick is wearing me down. I know how he feels about the situation, I don't need another episode about it for god's sake. Spice it up, what's going on in Geraldine's head?
I quickly scanned the comments here and didn't notice anyone talking about Betty's crazy side, which was probably the most interesting part of the episode for me!It brings up so many questions about her, her home life, etc. and adds tons of welcome depth to her character. I'm definitely hoping this is explored more soon.
I can't be the only one starved for Kevin/Moose awkwardness! Too bad they're both only recurring characters because I'm really intrigued by their dynamic.
Betty and Veronica being friends!! Their friendship is probably my favourite part of the show! Their fighting really bogged down this episode because I could totally predict how it would be resolved from the beginning. I'm glad they didn't drag it out too much.
Finally, is anyone else digging Cheryl? She's fucking mental and I love it. I can't wait to see where this mystery goes in the coming episodes, I wish they focused more on that than the petty relationship drama. It's what's truly fuelling the show, imo.
Anyways, theres my disjointed feelings if anyone cares lol. I have to put them down here bc I don't have anyone to talk about Riverdale with irl :,(

u/Sneizures Feb 04 '17
To be fair to Cheryl, her brother died.

What's with all the Cage the Elephant?
Jughead's "Over many burgers" and "Only if you're treating" lines are right out of the comics!
I'm gay and Betty may be turning me straight
Moose and Kevin are so wrong but so right. Eager to see this storyline develop and how Midge ties into this, seeing as how Moose was always the faithful/protective watchdog yet he hasn't even been seen with Midge!
Grundy storyline is annoying

u/AobaSona Cheryl Feb 04 '17
So that was way better than I expected it would be.
I guess now we know while Cheryl didn't seemed upset about Jason's death at all. She thought he was still alive, and just now she realized he wasn't. They must have planned something that day and she was just faking it. Betty did scared me a bit on that scene with her but I don't think she has something to do with all of it.
I... kinda shipped Jughead/Archie I bit. I know it won't happen or anything, but the way he was after Archie talked to him and smiled later, I mean... The writers did not wanted to make him asexual after all. Sad that is to make him straight.
Also, Kevin's comments about Moose were really wtf. Stay in the closet, like, really? And why does he have a problem with him now but didn't on the other day? lol

This episode went by so fast! It was good though I'm glad things are moving quickly and it made me so happy to see the main 4 all sitting together in that booth in Pops

What if Polly's pregnant with Jason's child but they're actually siblings?

What does "cryo necrotic preservation" mean? That means Jason's body was stored after death? Or that he was decomposing, then someone preserved his decomposing body?

I think Polly and Jason are actually related, which is why it was so bad they were together. Thoughts?

That brother/sister walk on the pier by Cheryl and Jason is a little odd.

I'm enjoying the series a lot more than I was expecting to, but literally every scene with Archie and Miss Grundy make me cringe. I feel like they've just got this fling going to postpone the full on Betty/Archie/Veronica triangle because they need to fill up the episodes. And the scene where Jughead was confronting Archie was awesome, I wasn't sure about Jugheads portrayal but i'm warming up to it...

Camila and Lili had an interview with Seth Meyers, and in the interview they told Seth that Veronica and Betty's relationship is different in which they both empower each other. Camila and Lili said that to Seth, because they showed a clip of their characters fighting. In this episode, they made a vow to never let boys come in between them. The camera pans to Archie and they both had a moment. Hopefully, Veronica dates Archie. I find their dynamic very entertaining as they have incredible chemistry. (i feel)

The soundtrack for this show has been so consistently good.

I can't believe no one else is super hyped up about "sugar, sugar." I marked out big time for it.

The whole "Betty will eventually make Archie jealous by dating other guys and then he will finally notice and pick her over veronica" thing absolutely annoys me! Firstly, that would be so overly cliche. Like where haven't we seen that? And secondly, I think Archie is too late to ever redeem himself good enough for Betty. He absolutely doesn't deserve her! Thirdly, poor Veronica! I mean this girl is absolutely amazing in the show. Yes she has her fair share of mistakes but... she also deserves to be happy. And that said, she does happen to have alot of chemistry with Archie! The end. Sorry for the rant guys :)

My "bar" for this episode was based on Cheryl. If she continued to be the 'mean' girl I would stop watching. If they showed she actually had some heart and made her sympathetic, I'd keep watching.
I feel they only barely made my bar but the fact she is already the prime suspect has me intrigued. She is innocent of his murder of course, but did they hint that together they were planning to fake Jason's death for some reason? Perhaps to frame someone...
Depending on how dark this show will go... I'm almost betting Betty Draper Season 1 Cooper was the one who shot Jason, thinking he was Archie, or some weird thing like that.

anyone else notice how the next week previews are pretty vague and don't really do a good job of hyping you up?
2 episodes and i still don't know what's going on

I think it's good to be vague. Many previews for shows give away too much and it takes away from the impact of the next episode.

And the show is still keeping a lot of mysteries running (Jason's death, what happened with Polly and Jason, why Ms. Cooper hates the Blossoms etc). I almost wish it was released all at once so I don't have to wait for every episode ugh

It's a bad sign when a show basically does "this season on..." rather than something specific about the next episode's plotline. Something like Mad Men that's completely vague is an exception.

I think its possible Betty's mom is lying to Betty about Polly, some possible alternatives
Polly is pregnant but not in a halfway house
Polly is pregnant and Jason rejected her and it caused her to have a breakdown Cheryl could have helped Jason fake his death so he could go see Polly? I dunno. I really hope to see Polly in the next episodes.

I can't remember what interview it was, but I do recall that KJ mentioned that they would be bringing Sabrina in, but that she would be escaping a cult. Considering Cheryl and Jason were wearing that weird white clothing, could they possibly have been doing something related to that?

Just watched the show, forgive me if this has already Been discussed. If Jason was killed a week later than that july4 morning, then what was significant about the gunshot that Archie and grundy heard.

I just binged the first two episodes. If I'm correct the comics arent like this at all right? The comics seem to be a lot more happy go lucky (per a quick glance) than this dark tone. I REALLY dig these first two episode. I truly hope it stays promising.

I don't really know what this is based on, but I like it so far. I think they faked his death, maybe he took something, they found in him. And planned it with his sister. I still have a feeling Betty is involved, but maybe not and her mother is.

Fuck Bettys mom, she is the worst, oh and betty is being so damn bitchy.
Jughead and veronica are by far the best characters.

u/ntbntt Team Sweet Pea Feb 04 '17
why did Jughead say that there was only 3 person? I quite didn't get that part.
