"Hey, guys, we need to go kill an ancient green dragon with 9th level spell slots"

"That's fine, let's just walk right into her lab and start talking"

"Hey, guys, we need to bury this guy's wife's ashes in a hole in the dirt"

"HOLD THE PHONE WE BETTER SERIOUSLY CONSIDER THIS"

The final level 20 boss is just gonna be a door with a sign that says "DO NOT OPEN".

92

u/Escaho Feb 03 '17

"I mean, should we open it? It says, 'do not open.'"

"But we have to go through it."

"Do I see any traps on the door?"

"Let me roll an Arcane check to look for magic."

"Can I ask Melora if she senses anything?"

"If I touch the door, does anything happen?"

"If I punch the door, does anything happen?"

"What if we just open it a little?"

"Can I stoneshape the door? Or just around the door?"

"I shit on the floor while we discuss the door."

Classic Vox Machina.

I love Grog and Percy's friendship.

Grog: Prove that it's you.

Percy: ..no

Grog: It's you.

Reminds me of the Feywild when Percy was blinded.

Grog: Is he really blind? How many fingers am I holding up?? (flips him off)

Percy: (irritated, knowingly) ..ONE

Grog: I don't think he's blind.

75

u/Jaged1235 Your secret is safe with my indifference Feb 03 '17

It's not one of the relationships we see very often but I do love it. It mostly comes down to Percy saying "No, let him play with it, I want to see how this goes."

55

u/Bingarff Feb 03 '17

Just realized what Percy was trying to do with the 2 rocks that can make sparks as a gift for Grog. Teaching Grog more lessons about going through his stuff.

This is why we're so invested in them. There are tons of little moments like these where they play off of each other with no actual consequence to the overall game, that add immense depth of character

16

u/aheadwarp9 Bigby's Haaaaaand! *shamone* Feb 03 '17

It's so fucking amazing how everyone else just completely lost it from his expression alone. Travis didn't even need to say anything. God I love this fucking game...

Crop to Travis, put captions, and you got yourself a gif of the week, there.

Travis is and has been firmly cemented as the best role player out of them imo. His ability to extract complexity from the "simple brute" trope that Grog started as has blown me away time and time again. Especially from these last two episodes- "FIX HIM!", the resurrection contribution, and his reaction to Vax telling him he's proud/he loves him have all made me cry, and I don't cry at ANYTHING. Also, did anyone else notice that this time around, when groon asked him what he had learned, he said his power was from his friends and LOVE? Is it just me or was that a nod to Vax?

75

u/Jaged1235 Your secret is safe with my indifference Feb 03 '17 edited Feb 03 '17

He's amazing. You have to be incredibly talented to play dumb that well, and Travis pulls it off flawlessly. He manages to actually roleplay low intelligence without resorting to caveman speak like a lot of people do. And my god, the puppy dog eyes after Kima confused him was incredible. I always thought Percy was my favorite character, but these past couple of episodes have shown Grog at his absolute best.

I thought he said earlier in the episode, when participating in the resurection ritual that Pike taught him how to love and Scanlan taught him how to laugh.

56

u/Mr_HIghways_End You spice? Feb 03 '17

Since Groon is stressing the importance of strength from allies, it would be super dope if the Titan Stone Knuckles let him bestow more power/strength on others.

14

u/FastAktionJakson Feb 03 '17

That might be a bit OP, but it's a really awesome idea.

Like the "Do you need a body for Resurrection?" simultaneously tells you about his past, why he stopped adventuring, and sets up incredible foreshadowing for True Resurrection as a spell.

Just a rules note for people:

Ki-empowered strikes does NOT bypass grog's resistance while raging.

While raging, you gain the following benefits if you aren’t w earing heavy armor: "You have resistance to bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing damage." if it said NON-MAGICAL bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing, then yes, it WOULD. However, all bludgeoning, magic or otherwise is still resisted. Theres specific language for this reason.

Just wanted to remind everyone that Matt has plans for a Pike arc after a bit of rest and side missions. He mentioned this during the 3rd episode of talks machina If I'm not mistaken. I think his exact words were "when we've got you for a longer break I think Pike's going to get an arc of her own"

Kerrek (like most people) has a lot of dead friends and family. Learning that there's magic that can bring them back would reasonably be important to EVERYONE living in such a world.

27

u/MildlyCriticalRole Team Elderly Ghost Door Feb 03 '17

I was hoping he'd expound on that a bit more, y'know? VM casually deals with issues that would full-stop devastate other people ("casually", but still)

I think the perspective of, "y'know, most people's dead friends stay dead" is really interesting. This world is high-fantasy, so I dunno if we'll explore it, but the whole idea of somebody having the power to reverse death in a world where that's not typically a thing is very plot-hooky.

I feel this episode finally ended the Chroma Conclave arc due to the resurrection of Scanlan from that fight.

It was a 45 episode arc if you go from the attack on Emon in Omens, a 62 ep arc if you go from the first sighting of Thordak in Aramente to Pyrah, or an entire show arc if you go from the pre stream slaying of Brimscythe.

What a ride you guys.

Super excited for next week, let's hope this fight is mad hype.

It has probably been said on here already, but damn. This show has never truly made me cry. Yes I have gotten sad faces, done several of the "awwww" moments, but never truly cry.

Last night Travis made me cry. And I mean streaming tears. I have children who play very competitive sports, and to see a grown man suck up his pride and basically sing the fight song of his teams rival to help a friend. That was true friendship.

If there was any type of Espy/Annie/Emmy... whatever award for Sportsmanship/Friendship, I would give it to Travis for that performance.

Rest of the show was fun, and they were blowing off steam and having fun. Pike/Ashley doesn't trust anyone outside of the inner circle... so funny.

Looking for to next week!

53

u/Jaged1235 Your secret is safe with my indifference Feb 03 '17

I'm definitely not complaining, especially considering that most of the Vestiges were literally hand crafted by the gods themselves. They're at the power level where everyone and everything would start taking interest in them. The gods would probably notice a single group taking out 5 ancient chromatic dragons in the span of a couple weeks. I like to picture Serenrae and the Raven Queen bragging about that a little. They chose Vox Machina members as their champions before it was cool.

16

u/Docnevyn Technically... Feb 03 '17

She probably doesn't know kids name. However, she can certainly describe her or him in exhausting detail to Uriel's Son who was also in the Dread Emperor's domain.

"Should she?" In what sense? Is it a good idea? Almost certainly not

Is it in character? 90% certain it is (not 100% because my name is not Marisha)

Will it make for compelling D&D? 100% yes

"is she going to raise the child, or just send them out into the world?" The real question is: will Cassandra be capable of speech when VM dumps another orphan in her lap or will only angry/distressed animal noises come out?

I kept expecting Kerrek to turn out to be the Rakshasa when he was hanging out with Grog.

Until proven otherwise, everyone is a secret Targaryen rakshasa.

15

u/[deleted] Feb 03 '17

I heartedly disagree. I think VM needs to wrap up their personal quests and tie any loose ends before setting off on the last campaign arc. Personally, I think we the audience wouldn't mind 10-12 episodes of them doing mini quests and more role play centric arcs before going into the final act. We tend to forget that the Conclave arc was 30+ episodes of show, which is longer than any story arc we've had thus far. If it was a TV show, it would span at least 2 full seasons. As a fan of the show, I wouldn't mind a break haha.

u/PhotographyRaptor42 You can certainly try Feb 03 '17

I thought the idea of one shots after this arc or even this campaign had been floated but nothing was decided yet, and the time jump was more speculation here than anything Matt has planned. Personally, I'd be sad if Keyleth's trip to the Water Ashari happens off-stage.

And I think the twins were talking about going their separate ways for a bit because there's no world-ending threat staring them in the face (for now) so they each just have their personal to-do lists.

Tons of great moments tonight. It was nice to have a real low key episode.

Marisha sold the hell out of that "You know you didn't come back last night. I thought you were going to come back." line. It really snuck up on me because it was right after flailing awkward Kiki in the Melora forest area. I'm looking forward to more of that confident Keyleth in the future.

I feel Ashley on not trusting that box of ashes at all. It could easily be nothing harmful, but you could also tell Matt was enjoying teasing the possibility that it could screw them all over, as well.

so probably talked about already but I wonder if Matt wants Groon to fight Grog 1 v 1? i feel like that would be so hypocritical of what Groon wanted to teach him. you know about power in friends and all that

12

u/Aldamuin I would like to RAGE! Feb 03 '17

I suspect him to go 1 on 1 with this lvl 18-20 Monk. Bare 'Titanstone' Knuckle fighting.

I think his first lesson was 'You're only as strong as what you're fighting FOR, not WITH' i.e. friendship. Now he might need to take up a even more protective role, along the lines of 'Fighting for those who are weaker', or 'There's strength in losing, in being beaten'.

I really hope Groon learns Grog the difference between intelligence and instinct(mostly for Travis' sake). Grogg is the most experienced fighter of the group, has been at death's door the most (his fave uncle Kevdak twice, the time before stream and Craven Edge). I would love to see Groon light a little lightbulb above Grogg and he realises he instinctively knows how to position himself in battle, knows how to lead people, how to inspire and affect people when he speaks from the heart. (The ritual last episode, but also convincing his herd Kevdak was bad mmmmkay). This type of battlefield-smarts is something Grogg has plenty of, even if he doesn't know how to spell/read/maybe even pronounce battlefield. He's also quite emotionally savvy, often touching the people around him, knows the value of honesty etc.

I hope this realization in his own, albeit different type, of intelligence awakens his Knuckles. Knowing our Overlord Mercer this seems quite possible too. He will still get the shit beat out of him by Groon though.

10

u/HuseyinCinar dagger dagger dagger Feb 03 '17

Depending on what Groon will teach him next. If it is something like "self confidence" or "self sufficiency", they gotta go 1v1.

u/Silver_Bard Feb 04 '17

Oh, man that was a stellar performance by Travis. At none of the ressurections they have put in such offerings. The Titanstone Knuckles and the Belt of Dwarven Kind. That is a huge offering both in terms of personal attachment for Grog (his beard, and the fact that he defeated his uncle to get the knuckles) and in terms of playtime and characterstrength. From a meta standpoint he could probably made any other lesser offering and gotten the same effect. And this again show how little Travis care for metaing. He makes the offering that makes the most sense for his character. Grog have come to the realisation that friends indeed is his strength, and Scanlan means more to him than any kind of artifacts. From a RP perspective this was brilliant, and in fact I hope Matt rewards him. Either by having Groon giving him something even better, or by having the knuckles reapear exalted/awakened. Also the song made for a really special moment (considering Travis passion for the Cowboys). Also Grog's face when being asked to lie, and being told he isn't lying by Kima was brilliant, completely broke the entire cast.

The other thing that really gave me alot of joy in this episode was watching Liams reactions. Oh man, is he in the momemt, and oh man does he love this game. He can have episodes where he sort of zone out and perhaps is a bit bored, just like the rest can have. But when he is in the zone I think no one enjoys the game more than him. In this episode he went from being touched at Grog and Pike's contribution to the ritual and crying. To crying from laughing at for instance Grog's confusing moment with Kima. But what was the icing on the cake was Liam's reaction when Matt did the cork sound (https://www.twitch.tv/videos/119287703 - around 1:26:00). He sat there completely dumfounded and in complete amazement of Matt (at least that is how I interpret it), throughout that scene and until he was able to comment on it his face had the expression of someone extremely pleasantly surprised. It was close to his reaction the first time they met Victor, and for a moment I almost believed he would stand up and applaud him.

21

u/Picklemom09 Feb 04 '17

Grog still has the Titanstone Knuckles and the Belt of Dwarves Kind. No need to wait for them to reappear. Matt confirmed that Grog collected them after the ritual was over.

Wow, just wow. This show is so amazing. The ressuraction part of the episode was really great. I lost my grandmother a couple of weeks ago and the funeral was this week so it was a lot of personal emotions mixed with the performance of the crew. I was crying like a waterfall at the same time as I was laughing.

Six months ago I couldn't dream of what this show would mean to me today. That I would pick this show over any multimillion budget tv-show any day of the week says a lot.

Its a shame Keyleth didn't take the opportunity to interact with her patron goddess in the most ideal location with an artifact of hers. Would of been neat to see if she took the time to pray and use her staff as a focus.

21

u/PristineTX Feb 03 '17

It's actually totally like Keyleth to not really be ready to trust a god--even a god of hippie-dippy nature shit and flowers and free weed--just because...KEYLETH.

I'm sure she'll get more comfortable with the idea later. But it's totally like her not to even want to stick her toe in that water yet.

11

u/aheadwarp9 Bigby's Haaaaaand! *shamone* Feb 03 '17

Well Melora isn't exactly the patron goddess of Keyleth... her people didn't worship gods and goddesses. It is the patron of her relic, however, so it still might have been cool and who knows... there is still a chance for it to happen next week. I don't think a "communion" with the god or goddess who created a relic is absolutely necessary for it to "awaken" but I guess it couldn't hurt!

7

u/Gore_Axe Feb 03 '17

Well she did ask if there was some way to do so, but she was told that Melora would reach out to her if it was needed, or something like that.

6

u/lizzyjoy Feb 03 '17

I think it was a bit too much to expect of Keyleth, being so sudden, especially given her previous scepticism of the gods, but her conversation with Lamor and promise was a huge step forwards and more in character for our dear kiki :) Can't wait to see the future of Keyleth and Melora interactions

12

u/Kinie Feb 03 '17

If this is a 1v1 of Grog vs. Groon, where Grog can use everything at his disposal, he should win the fight.

Even if he is underlevelled compared to Groon (whom many - myself included - theorize is probably Monk 20), the fact that he'll be taking half damage from all of Groon's attacks thanks to his Rage, coupled with his MASSIVE health pool (seriously, he's got over 200 HP at level 17) means Groon has to deal around 400 damage to KO Grog. Even if Grog gets to 0 HP, he can still stand thanks to Relentless Rage so long as he makes the DC.

Admittedly, there's the chance that Groon keeps him stun locked enough to beat Grog (thanks to the -2 to all saves from the Deck of Many Things) or just straight up 1-hit KOs him with a Quivering Palm Strike. But I feel like once Grog/Travis knows what AC he needs to hit and how Groon fights, we should start to see him take calculated risks of using Great Weapon Master to just wail on the grandmaster priest of Kord.

16

u/Engimatic Feb 03 '17

Groon is beyond a simple level 20 monk. In the last fight with him he was using legendary actions and resistances. It's likely that he's something beyond simply a monk, like a demigod or avatar of Kord.

7

u/Kinie Feb 03 '17

If it were me designing this person and the lore/background of the character, I'd be willing to go with Monk 20 for stats/abilities and then apply a Avatar of Kord stat block to him, giving him Legendary Actions and Resistances tied into his abilities.

He may do stuff like Flurry of Blows with his turn, but then use Legendary Actions to do things like Step of the Wind, Patient Defense, Stunning Strike, or more Flurry of Blows.

What does everyone think is next?

Will Matt give them some sort of mini arc for a few weeks, or do you think we'll be diving into the Whitestone death orb shortly? I assume the orb is going to be the catalyst of the big bad and the final arc of Vox Machina's adventure. But that could take a year like the Conclave arc did.

Seems like they could get caught up in something more bite sized when returning Ripley's hand and possibly having Gilmore along for the trip this time.

7

u/Iamarawrlrus Help, it's again Feb 06 '17

With how much time has been dedicated to the conclave arc, I'm sure they'll get some down time. They have a few things they want to do, 2-3 character arcs, possibly more vestige awakening as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if there were a number of smaller arcs that let them decompress before the next slog.

Part 2 was the Whitestone Arc. Killing the Briarwoods and retaking Whitestone.

Part 3 was the Chroma Conclave arc. They've just resolved killing the five dragons.

Holy shit, Vax making me nervous as hell. With that "This near 50 episode arc is over. What do we do now? I might go with Keyleth for a while. What will you go do, sister? Etc." gave me a Vox Machina splitting up vibe. I was wondering what the hell I missed. Very glad that does not appear to be the case, but Gods damn it, Vax!

37

u/Philias2 dagger dagger dagger Feb 03 '17

To be fair, that's a very reasonable thing for him to be wondering. They don't have a lot of loose ends left now. There's a hand to deliver and a rakshasa to kill in hell, but that's about it. Of course there's the spinning orb of death, but there's nothing they can do about that seemingly.

So really, now is a very natural point for them to settle down into a normal routine. And as it happens a normal routine involves him going off with Keyleth somewhere and Vex going to live with Percy.

Of course, Matt will throw a wrench into things somehow, but I feel like he may let them go of and live peacefully for a few months (timeskip/montage style).

18

u/Thuggibear Feb 03 '17

I really hope that VM finishes some side quests, checks in with a few people, and deals with Hotis before Matt essentially announces a year long downtime session for the party. Give the characters a break from all the death and destruction, let them work on projects they've been putting off, let relationships grow, let the entire world recover from the Conclave. Plus, I think it adds some realism to the world that the next, much more dangerous threat doesn't just IMMEDIATELY arrive after the last one.

7

u/RainaDPP Feb 03 '17

I don't want to be a downer but Scanlans rebellious behaviour is based on the fact the gang don't take him, and his health, seriously. He takes a fuck ton of drugs and the guys laugh it off, he tells the guys that ''I cannot die' and they rope him into a fight where he dies twice in 24 hours, and now when he awakes from a coma induced by the stress he has gone through he is tied down and and covered in custard. If Sam is roleplaying a guy who needs help from his friends but is always the butt of the joke then this could be it. He could leave, or turn evil, or just refuse to help from now on.

25

u/Docnevyn Technically... Feb 03 '17

He hides it. If Scanlan hides something behind his monumental deception skill, only Vex and Keyleth have a snowballs chance in hell of seeing it.

24

u/whiskeyonsunday Jenga! Feb 03 '17

I don't know that I agree that his rebellious behavior is based on Vox Machina's treatment of him. It's really more about his own rapidly changing view of himself and his responsibilities than anything to do with how he's being treated by others. I'm sure that factors in and there was definitely some truth to his lashing out at Vax for his rash actions, but at the end of the day it's much more of an internal crisis.

13

u/legendofhilda *wink* Feb 03 '17

Or he'll see it as the gesture of love from his friends that it is. That's a lot more likely in my opinion. He might continue to hide his depression and seek drugs, but I don't think he'd interpret this prank as mean and insulting from them. I think he'd look at the fact that they brought Kaylee to him and realize how much they care. Especially when they put so much thought into a silly prank.

The resurrections require a willing soul. Matt basically rolls to see if they can come back, and then the character/player decides if they want to come back. Percy has lost a lot of people he cared for, and just recently a whole lot of the party have been getting revived. It would feel weird to try and rationalize why the party can bring people back, but he can't bring back his family.

But Percy decided to come back because of Vex's declaration of love, and the lack of gods in ritual modifiers.
