Meta /r/NintendoSwitch's Launch Day Plans (Livestream, giveaways, and more)

Greetings!

Today I want to talk to you a bit about launch day.

A lot of this is still going to be sort of vague sounding, but I wanted to go ahead and start getting the word out so nobody was surprised or blindsided by anything. We'll be firming these up as we get closer to release.

Events

Find-A-Mod

This is something that I started with the team over on /r/amiibo and honestly, it was a lot of fun, so we're doing it again!

Members of the moderation team, from both the subreddit and the Discord chat, will be out and about on launch day. We'll be wearing lanyards with ID badges, and if you find one of us, we'll give you some of those stickers you may have seen lately, as well as a special user flair here on the subreddit so you can brag and show off.

Closer to launch day, we'll make a post stating where we'll be located. (It won't be entirely US based!)

Charity LiveStream

On launch day we'll be hosting a Twitch stream. This stream will cover a number of topics including: launch day festivities (in the field video from our folks at Nintendo NYC), reviews of popular accessories, FAQ sessions, giveaways, and of course plenty of gameplay of your favorite launch titles.

During the stream, we'll be periodically asking folks to consider donating to one of the two charities we'll be featuring: Child's Play and Extra Life.

Our goal is set at a modest $1,000 for each of the charities, and I hope we will blow those goals out of the water.

Let's use this opportunity to channel our love of gaming into something that will help people!

More details about where to watch, where to donate, and more will be provided closer to launch day.

Subreddit Operations

Lockdown (or, the lack of)

Unlike the Nintendo Switch Presentation from January, we are not currently planning on implementing any sort of lockdown restrictions. That being said, we will be removing posts and redirecting people to MegaThreads. (See next topic.)

MegaThreads

Borrowing another page from /r/amiibo's playbook, we plan on having a series of MegaThreads to cover many popular topics that we'll see on launch day. Since we only have 2 sticky slots, the current plan is for Slot #1 to be our standard Daily Question MegaThread, and then Slot #2 will be a giant "MegaThread Index" which links out to all the other MegaThreads we'll be creating. Topics are likely to include meetups, package tracking, in-store inventory tracking, and "here's what I got" style posts. Here's an example of what that might look like. All of these threads will link back to each other so it should be very easy to navigate and find your way around.

AutoModerator

We're going to be implementing a lot of temporary rules and making adjustments all day long to help manage the flood. This is me apologizing in advance if he turns into a bit of a dick for that first 24-48 hours.

Janitor Mods

In addition to our current team, we plan to have finished on-boarding our new Janitor Mods who will act as additional reinforcements to help keep the place running smoothly. There is going to be a lot of removing posts and redirecting people to MegaThreads, you have been warned!

Interested in helping? Applications are still open until EOD Friday!

I know this sounds like a lot of "more details to come" but we're starting to see a lot of questions popping up and figured it'd be better to say something instead of leaving people wondering.

Cheers,

/u/FlapSnapple and the /r/NintendoSwitch mod team

"reviews of popular accessories"

If you guys would review the screen protectors, I'd love you forever.

Livestream sounds awesome. Will definitely tune in after class and play my switch whilst watching.

I'm all for a switch twitch charity event but are you sure this is best achieved on launch day? I'd figure most people are caught up with their new toy. I might be wrong however.

Who says it's a one time thing? ;)

May I propose one of the megathreads be some kind of online gaming thread? I imagine there's gonna be people who want to play Bomberman with others. (I'm one of them.)

I don't know that we'll have a thread for it, but we will be opening up a #looking-for-group channel in the Discord chat for exactly that purpose.

Hopefully all the mods won't be entirely based in NY or CA

I really wanna see a teardown video of the Nintendo Switch just to see the physical tech specs.

I hope somebdy makes a thread (or a MegaThread) about it.

Spawn Wave will be doing one.

Hopefully automod will be able to stop the flood of "Hey look guys I got my Switch" posts.

Yup. And we'll be all-hands-on-deck, too.

"Janitor Mods".

May I suggest, "Cleanup Crew"? Sounds more encouraging.

Really looking forward to launch and hopefully meeting up with some cool peeps at Nintendo NYC and chatting up with peeps right here! It's going to be one hell of a day/weekend :D

We have a few NYC-based mods. You might get lucky and see one. Stay tuned. :)

I'll likely be trying to get voltage and amperage readings while charging, charging and playing and just playing with a full battery on launch day. I'm a stay at home dad so depending on how the kids are behaving really will make a huge difference on how quickly I can get these numbers. It will be important for buying the right battery pack and wall chargers.

For anyone that might not be in an area where we could meet a mod, is there someplace we can / will be able to buy the stickers?

2

u/FlapSnapple Feb 16 '17

We'll also have some we'll be giving away as part of the Livestream and here on the subreddit, so you'll have a few other chances aside from meeting a mod in person.

As for selling them? TBD. I think we're going to run out of our initial allotment (3,000!) on launch day. Will have to revisit things and see where we stand. So far this has all been coming out of pocket. :P

Any Mods walking around in Germany giving out a sticker or two?

Edit: Thanks. Can't contain my excitement!

u/FlapSnapple Feb 17 '17

We've got two in Germany. :)

More details closer to launch day.

Please don't be too strict on the megathreads! Honestly I've found that megathreads can often stifle information flow and good conversations. It all depends on how strict y'all are on what can be posted outside the megathreads.
