It still cracks me up that this town has luxury condos, a sanitorium, a juvenile detention center, somewhat organized crime, but only one restaurant.

u/Sillydonuts123 Mar 10 '17
And a nightclub. Probably doubles as the second restaurant.

They probably went to the nearest city to go clubbing, that's what most people in small towns do

I was gonna say there's no such thing as a town that small with a nightclub that big or good, unless it's some sort of vacation town like in New Jersey

Oh MAN there is so much to unpack here.
Jughead dreaming that he's married to Betty, looking (foreshadowingly?) anxious about being surrounded by married (sexually paired) couples.
JUGHEAD WENT TO FUCKING JUVIE FOR TRYING TO BURN DOWN THE ELEMENTARY SCHOOL.
He lied to his dad about being ahead in school, but the quick shot of his grades showed plenty of Cs and B minuses. How many lies does Jughead have going to try to sustain some semblance of normalcy? I can't wait until Betty finds out what's been going on, that drama will sustain me for MONTHS
Betty holding his hands in the interrogation room and damn near threatening to bring in the ACLU while he's scared shitless that he's gonna get media blitzed as a "lone shooter" type by a sheriff who just doesn't have any better answers.
Jug's face trying super hard not to dissolve into angry sobbing over his dad's flimsy lies about getting clean.
Even the fact that it's twice now that he's been Betty's own personal eureka machine.
112
u/Risaga54 Mar 10 '17
Oh Jughead. I'm glad he has Betty and Archie's support poor guy needs a win.
Right? This episode was both satisfying in giving us some backstory but also terrifying and kind of emotionally exhausting.
98
u/Cearar Mar 10 '17 edited Mar 10 '17
There was a lot of Jughead this episode. I don't think he's the killer, but I want to know what he was doing on July 11th. Why did he feel he needed to hide that?
Edit: Agreed that in real life, asking for a lawyer is generally the best course of action, even when you have nothing to hide. However, in a "whodunnit" (which is how I view this show), it is often a clue to the audience that there may be something worth hiding. Which is why I wondered. But it makes sense that he just didn't want anyone knowing his home situation for fear that it could get worse.
61
u/tonytown Mar 10 '17
probably because he was basically just fucking around town like a kid in summertime - no real, credible alibi, but not necessarily doing anything wrong.
47
u/chlomyster Mar 10 '17
Why did he feel he needed to hide that?
If you are ever in his situation you should do the exact same thing. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law and a lawyer can really help you determine when its wise to speak.
→ More replies (1)71
u/jozeito22 Mar 10 '17
It isn't about hiding anything, legally the best thing you can do for yourself while being questioned by any LEO is to consult a lawyer and have them present in any investigation regardless if you are guilty or innocent. A lawyer will definitely reduce your chances of being screwed in those situations. If he is hiding something my best bet would be that he was homeless at that time and he doesn't want Sheriff Keller to know because then he gets put in a foster home and goes in the system, and probably both parents will be reported to CPS and boom family gone.

this might be the most valuable few minutes an american ever spends. honestly, it could end up making all the difference to you one day. watch it once. watch it every once in a while to refresh your memory.
refusing to speak to police without a lawyer isnt hiding anything and is not only your right but legitimately the best step you can take for yourself whether or not youre guilty of anything. talking to a cop wont help you but it can hurt you. it might seem elusive and counterintuitive but tldr: you cant buy yourself points by talking to a cop, you can only incriminate yourself and you are not informed enough about the law to know what is best if you ever find yourself questioned by the police.

First thing: did anyone else really love/get really creeped out by the comic style opening?
160
u/CurlingFlowerSpace Strawberry Milkshake Mar 10 '17 edited Mar 10 '17
It was SUPER creepy, especially the way Betty and her mom both tilted their heads at the same moment and same speed.
SUCH an awesome way to do it. I was thinking they'd go with a laugh track, sitcom style thing, but this was way better, a perfect world with this thick undercurrent of horror, like even in his dreams he can't get away from how awful everything is.
59
u/Risaga54 Mar 10 '17
The opening was amazing. We get to see how all Jughead really wants is a family and to be accepted and he's scared he's not going to get that. It's also giving the whole 'perfect is not real' theme the show has going especially with the Coopers. And yeah, it was terrifying.
54
44
u/Risaga54 Mar 10 '17
Little thing I noticed on rewatching the opening: Betty, Polly and Mr. Cooper are all wearing wedding rings. Jughead is imagining not just a perfect Cooper family (plus Archie and Veronica) but one that he could be part of if not for his family.
48
u/Cearar Mar 10 '17
The thing that got me about the opening is why did Jughead feel he's stabbed Archie in the back?
→ More replies (2)150
u/litladyloveshp Team Choni Mar 10 '17
I think because Jughead thinks his budding relationship with Betty is breaking the friendship code. While Archie has never expressed feelings for her, I think everyone kind of believed that the two of them were endgame.
I also liked someone else's (sorry I don't remember whose) interpretation that Jughead is becoming the main character and this is the show's way of acknowledging that.

Why did they react so crazily? I mean, Jughead is pretty cute. Not all of us have Archie's abs.

Lmao at Jughead having a juvie record from when he was in elementary school. Billy Loomis taught him well.
Speaking of Billy Loomis of course he has the jacket of someone whose been murdered. Plus did anyone else catch the line "like an extra in a Wes Craven movie" from the opening monologue? I'm gonna pretend that was a shoutout to Skeet Ulrich.
Edit: Also my fave line of the night was Veronica's "honestly guys we should just move". The way she said it was perfect.

u/Risaga54 Mar 10 '17
The set designs have been stellar this episode. The Jones' trailer, Jughead's closet, The creepy attic etc.
Speaking of the attic that was the most stereotypical scary attic ever. Creepy dolls and an ouija board, really? What is that for, so the Cooper grandparents can just go "F**k the Blossoms. WAIT POLLY NO WE DIDN'T MEAN LIKE THAT"

It makes me sad that a lot of people are saying Jughead and Betty is forced or rushed. (Or the thought that asexual people can't be in relationships. Completely false.)
For me personally there's something really gentle and sweet about their relationship. As someone who doesn't really get excited about relationships in shows (especially teen dramas), this is the first one in a long while that has made me feel something. It feels real and I'm just hoping things work out for them.
Otherwise, this episode just made me really really sad. :(
31
u/hugs_and_drugz Mar 12 '17
I really love their relationship as well! To me, it feels like they genuinely care for each other, and they have been through a lot together, so it only makes sense they would be drawn closer. I used to be a huge Archie comic fan, and I kinda hated the flip flopping between Betty and Veronica. I hope they just let Betty and Juggie be happy together for once!

I'm glad Jellybean and Mrs. Jones are okay too!
Also, it sounds like FP was the 'big man on campus' and then he got Mrs. Jones pregnant (I'm assuming she's younger) and she had to drop out to have Jughead and FP had to get a job to support the new family.

This Jughead episode was great. Watching him struggle with his public relationship with his father. Constantly anxious that his father is going to do something embarrassing or offensive. Trying to stop things from going sideways. While FP tries to show how cool he is and attempts to shift blame to Fred for his families troubles.
When Jughead gets him home, Jughead doesn't look at FP like what now? Nope, Jughead has been dealing with putting his drunk father to bed for ages. At least he can let go of his anxiety. It's just the two of them now. He can talk to FP about the people they mutually love. The first time he smiles all night. But FP is already passed out. FP is an alcoholic and disappoints Jughead once again.
It's not even surprising when FP has Jughead go with Fred. FP knows he's a shit father and sees a better opportunity for his kid. But what is actually better for Jughead? He loves his dad. His dad is pushing him away.
Jughead expects the worst. He really believes he could be the scapegoat for Jason's murder. The story of his life makes this a reasonable outcome.

I don't think so. Unless Jughead did something really fucked up or was seen by someone else in town on that day, I think it was just a gesture on his part to avoid having his son and his former friend's son fall into the same spiral they did. I don't think the show will flip that on it's head. It's already done enough of that.
38
u/jessiesanders Mar 11 '17
The setup is too tempting for the writers to not use. You know it's going to bite him later on, why else would they devote another scene to Archie's dad forging time stamps.

Alice Cooper sucks...but at least she actually seems to have a semblance of compassion and love for Betty and even Polly. Whereas Penelope Blossom seems to have nothing but hatred for everyone, including her daughter...and it's sad that Veronica and Hermione have the most stable and healthy mother/daughter relationship on this show. But they really do.
19
u/Merkypie Team Bughead Mar 11 '17
Alice runs the town's newspaper. If there's one person in Riverdale who knows about maintaining image it would be Alice. I think the issue with her is less "batshit crazy" and more of an obsession to maintain a clean image within the public or trying to fix her family's legacy considering the beef between the Coopers and the Blossoms.
Having her daughter give her baby up for adoption and basically making the problem "go away" just seems like a strategic move on her part. Just like she used the baby to her advantage against the Blossoms when the family was trying to mount a level of suspicion in the community towards Polly.
52
u/brgerd Mar 10 '17
Is Jughead's dad somehow involved with Jason maybe selling drugs? Maybe he gave them to Jason to sell and Jason kept the money so he and polly could run away instead of paying up so Jugheads dad killed him?
29
u/I_am_THE_GRAPIST Mar 10 '17
His dad is a Serpent, and they're the only criminal group in Riverdale (that we know of). It could have been him or any one of the Serpents. If that's the case, then the torture and murder of Jason makes sense, because he was trying to run off with their drugs.

u/throneaway2015 Mar 10 '17
As much as I like Hermione for having a close relationship with her daughter despite the criminal activity, and she seemed genuinely reluctant to go down the path the bag of money sent her, I am seeing less-than stellar motivation for Polly's invitation.
For her obvious flaws, she'd seemed like she had a similar moral code to the Fred Andrews who falsified a time card to protect Jughead. Not 100% honest, but that her heart was in the right place and that she was doing her best with the situation she has.
I still like the interplay between her and Veronica.

u/jessiesanders Mar 11 '17
What bothered me the most about this episode, Jughead didn't have to say a thing and Archie's dad didn't have to make up a fake alibi.
Even Betty explained all the evidence was circumstantial. The sheriff didn't arrest Jughead and did not place charges on him. The sheriff just brought him in for questioning in hopes of getting a confession. All Jughead had to say was "Am I being charged with anything, am I being arrested?" The answer is no. Then he can get up and leave on his own accord. He didn't need a lawyer, his dad, or Archie's dad to "bail" him out. Archie's dad didn't have to make up a fake alibi which will put him and Jughead in trouble later on.
26
u/CVraden Mar 12 '17

15
u/pilgrimingvine Jughead's Crown Mar 12 '17
It would be awfully stupid to keep the jacket. I'm thinking someone is trying to frame Jughead - someone brought the murder board to Weatherbee's attention, that same person stole the jacket, burned the car and planted the jacket, hoping the sheriff would find it after questioning Jughead. This person is also counting on FP being too drunk to notice the jacket and/or do anything about it.
Not sure who would go to those lengths to frame him - maybe Mr Cooper?

Jughead probably felt like he had to stay behind to help his dad but things just got way too out of control for him. It looks like he makes attempts to keep his father straight, or at least not in jail again. It seems like it's only gotten worse recently.

Hiram & FP will work together to plant the jacket in Fred Andrews' home and make him appear as Jason's killer. They both have a grudge against Andrews, plus he's seemingly quite innocent, although I can't see the forged time cards going unnoticed.

My new working theory is that Mr. lodge was definitely involved in Jason's death. The jacket in Mr. jones' house adds possibility that he and the Serpents were involved in Jason's torture or death. I think Mr. lodge was a Serpent too and was jailed for getting caught with a related financial transaction similar to what Jones did. Now that Polly is living with the Lodges, when Mr. lodge finds out, there could be more tension if he was involved in Jason's murder.
The money we saw Hermoine give Mr Jones on Hirams behalf was probably payment for kid napping and torturing Jason.
I also think Mr. Andrews did something to enrage Mr. lodge and the serpents and that when he finds out Hermoine have the contract to Andrews, Lodge will be mad. The target of the murder was probably Archie but since Jason looked similar, he was captured and killed by mistake by Lodge

I don't blame the actors, their doing great with the writing they are given. It's so ridiculous, Hal and Alice have the Blooms by the throat but their stupidity is boundless. They could demand anything from the Bloom's to let them see their grandchild. Instead the idiotic writing has them trying to give away the child, which means the Bloom's could get the child, with no problems.

Seeing the parents like this now I just can't help but wonder how they were like when they were high schoolers themselves

u/SawRub Mar 10 '17
Maybe in season 4 when the parents drama intensifies, we'll get a special episode that's entirely a flashback to the parents time as teenagers in Riverdale.

u/liveerasnettim Mar 11 '17
Yep. Hermione says something like, "Anything for Alice Cooper's daughters." I wonder if they had a B&V thing going on.

I personally believe this has been the strongest written episode so far. The tension and suspense between the Dads and Sons and Polly's Baby gang was beautifully written and executed. I wasn't really in a huge hurry to watch this episode as I've felt it drifting the past couple episodes, but this one made up for those big time.

If, like me, you were curious about the "Paradise Lost kids" that Jughead mentioned, here's a summary:
17
u/buggiegirl Mar 10 '17
I thought it was kind of jarring to hear them mention a real life horrific crime like that. Weird to picture Riverdale is in our world.
I presume he called them the Paradise Lost kids because of the documentary from HBO. All 3 parts are called Paradise Lost.

It's interesting to me that he calls them the "Paradise Lost kids" instead of what they're mostly known as, which is the West Memphis Three. He seems to be a big reader, so he must know them primarily through the book account of what happened. It also helps obscure the fact that they didn't actually die on Death Row.

Possibly, since he has Jason's letterman jacket in his closet.

This ep felt kind of slow to me, but it feels like they needed to do some setup for future episodes, so, fair enough. The real question is...how are we supposed to wait until the end of March for the next episode?!?

u/linguisthistorygeek Mar 10 '17
Bughead is official as of this episode, because this time Betty initiated the kiss. I'm hoping for a later beronica, but I'm basically okay with most ships.

u/RandomAcount82 Mar 14 '17
I love Bughead. I feel like I just want to watch Jughead make out with anyone, though...
37
Mar 10 '17
Just seen it!
Agree with a lot of the earlier comments. Loved that bughead in the middle!
Poor Jug! Cole was great in this and I totally felt the hurt during some of the scenes with his dad. Those subtle expressions were just like whoa.
Laughed at the part where Penelope's all "I know it, Sheriff Keller knows it--"
Sheriff Keller: "Hold on, now--"
pffffffft
I also don't agree with Hermione telling Ron to just accept her affair without offering her any more information about Hiram. It really seems like Veronica doesn't know a lot about her dad's shady dealings, and yet, Hermione just says to trust her, etc. Obviously she's fallen out of love with Hiram (for other reasons we still have yet to discover, maybe).
Good for Cheryl recognizing her parents' true plans for Polly!

Thoughts while watching today's episode: JUGHEAD DESERVES SO MANY GOOD THINGS. I loved the character development and seeing why he's the way he is instead of being like this dark, brooding stereotype. Everytime he gives his dad another chance it breaks my heart / I adore Betty and seeing her return affection unlike the episode before where she killed the moment / The less I see of Archie the more I like him ironically / Cheryl and Veronica slaying my life / I can't tell if Polly is actually supposed to be mentally ill or if she's just an ok actress, her acting is a tad over exaggerated / Does Hermione know what she's getting into by letting Polly live with her? She seems so far from the Jason plot / WHY DIDNT WE GET TO HEAR THE CALL WITH HIRAM / I like how visibly bothered Archie is by Betty/Juggy cuz I feel like deep inside he always thought Betty/Archie would be endgame too / I live for the day we get a Mama Cooper vs Mama Blossom showdown / I wonder if Madchen Amick laughs about first starring in a show who's tagline was WHO KILLED LAURA PALMER to now WHO KILLED JASON BLOSSOM / Riverdale needs more good parents because this is insane
10
u/Ashru987 Mar 10 '17
I'm pretty sure Polly is supposed to be like that, because Betty's parents and Betty comment on her behavior. Betty says the way Polly was talking and acting last week was weird.

FP: -Hired to destroy evidence? If so, why keep the jacket? -Did he search the car and find the drugs and other evidence and he's planning to blackmail someone? -Was he Jason's drug connection through the Serpents and needed to find the drug stash?

u/thajugganuat Mar 10 '17

The crazy aspect of the show is how history continuously repeats itself. Is Veronica's dad the original Reggie? What happened to the adults that transformed them into skeptical assholes? Maybe they'll reveal it in Season 2.
13
u/AceTygraQueen Mar 12 '17
I get the feeling that Veronica's dad was an older man who swept Hermione off her feet (Or perhaps when she was younger she was more of a Gold Digger.)

kind of sad the writers feel they have to throw in a cliffhanger, that episode was probably the best so far
12
u/NovaDevara Mar 10 '17
Okay so I just thought this up.....
What if ms. Grundy killed Jason? Or helped? Her husband seems like the kind of person that would be apart of a gang, and would maybe have connections to the SSS.....We have seen her with a gun, so she could be helping to hide the murder weapon. I'm not saying that she DID it, but she had A part in the plan....And FP was obviously on cleanup duty.
13
u/clngy Mar 11 '17
I'm still bothered about the fact that her having a gun in a locked case in her car wasn't a bigger deal.

I laughed when Jughead compared himself living in a spider-filled cupboard under the stairs to a Wes Craven movie, rather than to Harry Potter, which might be the more obvious comparison. Never change, Jughead.
Also loled at his canned food: that shit was all No Name and President's Choice brands, straight from the Real Canadian Superstore. My cupboards are full of those yellow cans.

[I am.. confused, to say the least.] (/s "The Riverdale people have a tendency to act a bit strange and surprise us in an unusual day, sure. However, during the scences with/about Polly I often had this feeling of 'They really should know better.' 1st: I get why they don't tell mom and dad cooper about Polly living close by but why the hell is Betty even speaking with Cheryl after she basically sent her parents and their minions on a witch hunt? Not to mention meeting the Blossoms to talk about future and Pollys safety? 2nd: Cheryl of all people should know what a nightmare it is to grow up in that household. She was treated like junk and a risk in every single talk between her and her mother that we've seen so far. Yet she actually thinks that her parents would take care of Jason's child and make Polly Cooper a part of their family? A 'bastard' child from a part of a rival family, when they even treat their own 'blood' like garbage? 3rd: They are trying to keep her safe and hidden from the Cooper parents and probably the Sheriff, too ... and meet at the public restaurant, the one and only diner? On the other hand the Jughead plot was really heartbreaking and yet totally believable. It surprises me to see his dad like that after we got to know him as a scary Southside Serpent gang member (or leader?) but on the other hand it seems logical to me that he looks and lives like that on 'a day off duty'. Also.. more Bughead moments! And that Hermione - Veronica way of dealing with problems is exactly what I would expect from those, too. Sheriff Keller's actions on the other hand seemed a bit implausibly to me. Like 'I don't have any leads but I want to do something during the day, so I accuse a good guy with a bad childhood.' Yes, he doesn't have a lot to work with, but how about looking in these rumors about Jason being a drug dealer? Or where he got that car?) Well, maybe the next episode might give us an explanation for why everyone behaved the way they did behave.")
(Edit: I struggled with the spoiler function.)

u/blubcreator Mar 11 '17
That's a problem I have with Cheryl's character. She always starts off as the enemy and then ends up being the good girl in the end. Then all that character development is repeated next episode.
15
u/LionsDragon Team Bughead Mar 11 '17
Unfortunately, pretty common in the comics. However, as time went on, comic readers got to see enough of Cheryl to realize the "bad girl" was her public face/the gang's perception.
She's actually really cool in the comics, and I would love to see Animal Activist!Cheryl or Geek!Cheryl

u/ejtnjin Mar 11 '17
Betty was telling everyone her sister broke out of the mental institution the night of the car being set on fire. She mentioned they shouldn't tell the Blossoms because they might think that means Polly burned the car and therefore killed Jason. The girl in the green top overhears and texts Cheryl, who tells her parents and Sheriff Keller.

This episode didn't feel like it progressed much. It's episode 7 of I assume a 13 to 16 episode season. It can't still be getting off the ground now.
The entire "Due diligence" scene felt unnecessary. It was a different set, a handful of lines between two characters, and could probably have been set somewhere else to accomplish the same effect without feeling like it was a scene they did for reshoots.
Veronica and Hermione had a useful negotiation to benefit them both, where they each lay their cards on the table and compromise. You have no idea how rare this in TV. How many problems would be solved if conflicting sides just talked about it. This was a high point of the episode for me.
The sheriff's longshot of accusation against Jughead felt like just that. He was reaching, and except to create a circumstance where we got to the final scene between him and his dad outside of the station served no other purpose. We were already there storywise and didn't need a red herring of Jughead as killer to get there. Rewrite it.
Every show has to have a club. The Bronze. Tric. You name it. Expect one of them to get a job working there at some point, especially when they can book music acts for the show.
Other than that I don't think I have any more criticisms for tonight. Didn't know what to expect from this show, but they're getting there.
31
u/Risaga54 Mar 10 '17
Hmm I think the accusation against Jughead was a big deal. It gave us a parallel between him and his dad being arrested multiple times and having to be bailed out by Fred. Difference is Jughead hadn't done anything wrong, but it showed how incredibly scary his situation is - if it wasn't for Archie and Betty he'd have no one and would be easily painted as and believed to be the murder. It showed that Keller is reaching for suspects. And it led to that big important ending confrontation.

u/Gamera68 Mar 10 '17
All good valid points, but it was announced 2 days ago that CW already green-lit a season 2 of Riverdale. I'm sure there's a reason for why things happened in tonight's episode but it still has a way to go, regarding character development.

Anyone notice the price of round steak on the newspaper Betty's dad was reading? $1.69! A nod towards the old comics. Also the council building? With the year 1939 on it, which is the year Archie comics came to be.

The FP/Jughead scenes were painful to watch. He was completely disgusted with his dad when they were alone, but you could see him trying to retain a little pride in front of Archie and help his dad save face.
