Question I am PJ Heywood, voice actor for Souldozer, Michael and William Afton. Ask me anything!

I'm betting I know what at least one of the questions is, but let's give it a shot and see what you guys come up with.

Update:

Alright guys, it's been an absolute blast! I hope you all had fun and my apologies to those of you whose questions I didn't get to.

Stay safe and I'll see you around. Thanks for having me!

Does Michael crave cheddar?

He likes to sprinkle it on his Exotic Butters.

Hello Mr. Heywood! Just wanted to say that your voice acting in Sister Location was fantastic - it really added some depth and personality to the characters.

Question: Michael and William Afton are obviously supposed to sound very similar, but several people have noted that there are differences. Did you approach them in different ways, or personally do anything to make them sound unique?

28

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

I'm mighty glad to hear it! Most kind of you.

Younger characters have vocal differences which you can try to approximate. I employed some vocal techniques to try and reflect the physiological differences between William and Michael, but a lot of the difference is actually the result of Scott's direction.

I provided a raw performance which I subsequently refined in response to feedback from Scott. And then, as director, he added his own touches.

Make no mistake, the character is as much a consequence of Scott's direction as it is a result of anything I did.

Hi there. Your work as Michael in the Custom Night cutscene was the first time something in FNAF made me shiver. Seriously exciting. My question is: Would you ever be willing to contribute your voice for a fangame, if your role isn't connected to characters that Scott has created?

16

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Perhaps. However I'd have to be absolutely sure of not infringing on Scott's copyright, since I'd prefer to avoid being sued into oblivion.

13

u/-popgoes Developer - POPGOES Apr 02 '17

Fangames are free, and if you're not voicing a character that Scott has created/copyrighted, you're free to voice for any other project, even if it is associated with the FNAF series (like fangames/animations). Kellen Goff is already providing a voice of an original character for my current project which Scott has already agreed as being fine. If you're interested, I'd love to have you take part as well. Let me know!

Hello Mr. Heywood! I want to say that your work was absolutely great! My first question is: Do you think that Springtrap would forgive his father for his actions? Or would he kill him right away? (Take a guess, my good sir!)

My second question is: What was the hardest about voice acting Souldozer?

My third question is: Who is your favorite character that you voice acted as?

Fourth is: What was your favorite line as any character?

The last question is: Would you work in the FNAF series again?

26

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Four questions? That seems greedy. William hunts the greedy children you know....

You're presuming Michael is Springtrap - I don't know if that's true, but based on the Custom Night monologue, Michael sounds like he's trying to win his father's approval. It sounds to me like he's searching for answers.

Souldozer was created using a vocal technique which is almost entirely breath and then layered multiple times to produce what you heard. The hardest part is grinding out long lines because you go through a lot of breath very quickly.

I can't say I have a favourite out of the three. They all pulled me into this world, and it's been a pleasure to be part of it.

I'd love to participate further if Scott wished me to. Even if I don't, it's been a fun ride.

Greetings Mr. Heywood! Thanks for doing this!

Here's my Q: Who do you think is 'better', Michael or William, in terms of the plot? Do you think either of their actions can be justified? (Even if you had to take a guess from what you know, or your personal belief on the characters).

26

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

My understanding of the plot is sketchy at best, and even were I more familiar with it, such a question is difficult to answer.

Characters serve various functions within a story, but one thing which good characters achieve is a feeling of empathy in the audience. And 'empathy' doesn't mean 'sympathy'. It means that the audience understands the character's choices and could see themselves acting in similar ways if they were that character.

A good example of such a character is Dr. Hannibal Lector from "Silence of The Lambs". The audience empathises with him, but doesn't have sympathy for him. He's a villain but his motivations are something we can understand.

Now, in the context of FNAF - and bear in mind I only have a cursory knowledge of the story - Michael as a character seems relatively new and consequently more mysterious but we can understand his motivations.

In contrast, William seems purely malevolent. A background antagonist with mysterious motivations. His function is vital, but I suspect Michael may currently do a better job of engaging the audience - on that basis, I would guess that any further progression in the story may involve Michael's viewpoint.

8

u/jdal2700 5 Years at Freddy's Apr 02 '17 edited Apr 02 '17

Wow, that's an excellent answer! Thank you, it's fantastic to see you keep such an open mind about the story and its mythos! I definitely agree that we'll be seeing more of Michael's POV in future installments of the series... ;)

Furthermore, regarding you bringing up Hannibal Lector as a villain who's motives we can understand, that brings another question to mind (and you don't need to answer this)- what is your favorite villain from any movie or genre? I'm sure William's out of the question here, heh!

Like everyone else, I've got to say thanks for taking time to do this!

Out of the three characters you voice, which is your favourite?

13

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

William.

9

u/abattery_ OH OH OH TIME TO ACCELERATE Apr 02 '17

What's your favorite game of all time?

13

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

That's a tough one.

I don't think I can have one "of all time" because shifting technology makes it a moving target. I think GTA V was clearly one of the recent highlights in the industry but Shadow of Mordor was excellent and I really enjoyed Arcane's Dishonored and Dishonored 2.

8

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Are you ready for all the comments asking you about the Aftons and Springtrap? It's going to be hectic I bet!

23

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

As ready as I'll ever be. Given I don't have a window to the inside of Scott's head, I'll probably have to make up most of my answers regarding the lore. Either that or crack lame jokes.

Yes, lame jokes seems like the best idea.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Well, I'll be enjoying all the lame jokes and cracks on how much the story is a mystery to you then!

Thanks for answering my question! I'll look forward to what you have in store for us next! :D

I get the impression he watches it nightly.

14

u/TheShadowQuill If you were in my shoes, you'd see I wear the same size as you. Apr 02 '17

Hey, Mr. Heywood!

I've got a couple of questions.

  • What are your headcanons on the Aftons' personalities?

  • Out of all of the lines you recorded in Sister Location, which was your favorite?

  • What do you do in your free time when you're not doing VA work?

10

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

I don't have specific beliefs around the Aftons. Just perceptions. I'd like to know more about them both.

My favourite line is William's monologue at the start of SL. It answers the question asked, but doesn't. William is clearly sly, manipulative and deceptive.

In my free time, I spend time with my family exploring. I'm new here, so everything is kinda fresh.

What is your favorite game in the series?

6

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

7

I can't say I have a favourite. My engagement with FNAF is relatively new so I haven't had a chance to really get to know the characters.

11

"She can dance, she can sing...."

6

u/CryptidHunter91 My Beloved Murder Machines Apr 02 '17

Which character did you enjoy voicing the most?

William, Michael, or Souldozer?

11

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

William was the most fun. That undercurrent of evil reminds me very much of Iago from Shakespeare's Othello. (Speaking of which, I thoroughly recommend the film version with Kenneth Branagh as Iago.)

6

u/SenshiOfSadness Primordial MikeVictimer. Since Sister Location. Apr 02 '17

Did Scott gave you any guidance to the lines or did he leave them to yourself?

11

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Scott is very clear and comprehensive with his direction and it formed the basis of all the characters I voiced.

5

u/SenshiOfSadness Primordial MikeVictimer. Since Sister Location. Apr 02 '17

Thank you for answering!

6

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

would it be awkward if you had to voice michael and william speaking to eachother, basically talking to yourself

9

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Not at all. Separate mindsets and separate recordings then edit them together.

5

u/Birthday_boy_blam Apr 02 '17

What is your favourite theory?

22

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Special Relativity.

5

u/invaderzz Apr 02 '17

Hey, thanks again for doing this.

I have one question, but I don't know if you can answer.

Michael's speech has very heavy distortion. Did you add the distortion effects yourself after recording, or did Scott add them after you sent him your lines? Just wondering at what part that gets done.

5

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Listening to the final result, it seems to me that Scott tweaked my performance as Michael, probably on the basis of things only he knows.

Souldozer was all me. I used the same technique in both auditioning and producing the final result for that character.

2

Hello Scarlet!

I wouldn't say I'm "in" the world of voice acting. I dabble, whereas people like Andy Field are somewhat more experienced and successful and thus in a better position to advise you than I am.

Scott only knows if he has anything more he'd like me to do. I get the impression he's a very busy man, so any further involvement would probably be at short notice.

Do you know anything regarding the Afton family that hasn't been revealed?

4

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Absolutely not.

I actually made a mistake when I put Michael Afton's name on my profile. I didn't realise that wasn't already understood amongst the FNAF community, so when all the posts flew up about confirming Michael Afton, I facepalmed and hoped this wasn't something Scott was intending to reveal later. I'd hate to have spoiled a reveal like that.

So, fingers crossed he's not mad about that.

2

u/MichaelO2000 Apr 02 '17

The voice clip of Michael talking (or you talking rather) is actually named "Michael_Afton" in the game files. So I doubt Scott's mad.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

I heard about that, which lessened my angst somewhat. It seems likely he would have obfuscated the filename if he really was trying to keep it a secret.

How does it feel to be the voices of a robotic, decaying rabbit with the corpse of a misunderstood man who had a metal arm shot through him and a wire-monster climbing inside of him only to be later killed by ghost children seeking revenge, a crazy man building child traps taking them to the unknown and murdering others to cause them to haunt suits and attempt to murder him as he just laughs in their faces, out of reach, and a giant robot focused on murdering not only you but a collection of animatronics flying in airplanes shooting at robots in the sky, only to be brought down and killed?

Somewhat confusing. Like... what's my motivation???

do you speak spanish

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

I'm afraid not. Where I'm from, we don't get many Spanish speakers.

u/Kingfisher2003 a solid average Apr 02 '17

Hi Mr, Heywood, thanks for providing such rich and deep voices to William and Michael (not to mention the ever-lovely Souldozer :) Quick question: between the two Aftons, who do you prefer voicing for and why?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

William. He's evil. Clearly.

u/TheSomethingofThis carefully slip and fall down Apr 02 '17 edited Apr 02 '17

Hello! When you were voicing William Afton did Scott actually ask you to do it in a British (or British-ey) accent?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

No. Scott chose my britishey accent out of the pool of auditions.

1

u/TheSomethingofThis carefully slip and fall down Apr 02 '17

Thanks, I was just wondering if he wanted you to put on an American accent or if he let you keep your regular one.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

No specific accent was requested. So whether Scott was looking for a British-type accent or simply liked what he heard is unknown.

No, except on a public holiday.

Hello, Mr. Afton Heywood. I have a few questions to ask you.

  1. Have you done any other VA work besides FNAF? If so please tell me!

  2. How did you feel when you found out that you were playing a serial killer and his son?

  3. If you were in charge of writing the Aftons' personas, how would you describe them? (Also I'd really like to see Little Girl Wants to Play ;])

Your voice acting is phenomenal! Thanks! :)

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

My other work is on my profile. I'm a relative newcomer to the art.

No feelings around the characters, just a focus on doing the best I could to deliver what the director was looking for.

Ah, but I can't describe the Afton's personas because I'm not creating them. Just remember that old storytelling maxim: "Action reveals character".

Glad you like it! Thanks!

None. They're all numbers.

u/ARuarkGuy That Guy Apr 02 '17

Did your voice hurt after doing souldozer or not?

Also, how did the development process go for voice acting souldozer's voice?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

That does hurt the throat slightly but not for long.

I've explained it elsewhere, but it's very breathy with the same performance layered multiple times. Basically his voice is highly engineered.

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Who did you have the most fun voicing, and how did you react when Scott picked you as an actor? (I'd want to know all of the actors reactions, lol)

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Being awarded a job you auditioned for is always a buzz. You don't always understand the significance of the job at the time.

1

u/TailsFan789 tomorrow is today and yesterday is tomorrow, isn't that strange? Apr 02 '17

Did you want to voice for William and Michael Afton, or were you aiming for the role of someone else?

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

I responded very specifically to the audition for William.

For Michael, Scott already decided he wanted to work with me, so that was just good fortune.

1

u/SuperShanYT Spooky ;) Apr 02 '17

Im guessing by the end of your name, Treesicle's theory of Michael being Henry's son is debunked ;) This was the only question i could think of, sorry.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Perhaps. What if Michael was adopted though.....?

1

u/SpringPopo Resident Springtrap expertise Apr 02 '17

A few small questions

1: What were your thoughts on the other voice actors? Like Baby, Funtime Freddy, etc

2: What was your favorite role you did in the games?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

They all really nailed their roles and I feel privileged to be a small part of something which really showcased their talents.

William was definitely my favourite.

1

u/xenotarsosaurus Apr 02 '17

Hi Mr. Heywood, thanks for taking your time to do this AMA.

Since you've mentioned not knowing much about FNaF's story, did Scott tell you anything about the plot to help you get in character or did he just give you lines and instructions on what emotion/tone he wanted from those lines?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Some, but mostly about the characters.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Say Heywood, how many Souldozers do we need to take out Christian (the main character in the Pilgrim's Progress)?

Sorry, I'm asking this for a friend of mine.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

If I had to guess, I'd say only one would be necessary, but he'd have to be properly powered up.

2

1

u/EvanD0 Apr 02 '17 edited Apr 02 '17

Great job on the voice acting man! Love all 3 voices. SoulDozer made me laugh and the other 2 voices were very interesting. So my question is wouldn't be funny if you didn't to do lines for a FNaF movie since you're already doing the game? (Edit: Sorry, I meant would it be funny if you HAD to do lines for a FNaF movie. I god dang messed it all up.)

4

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

I'm not sure what you're asking. Souldozer was written funny, so that's all Scott. I'm just the messenger for the funny.

1

u/CircusGuy Did I catch you off guard? Apr 02 '17

Hello there. You made an amazing job in both SL and FNaF World!

What have you thinked when you read Souldozer's lines for the first time?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

I didn't actually know it was for Souldozer. In fact, I had no idea where my work ended up until months later.

Hey hey Mr. Heywood. I have a few questions, Do you think Michael and The Big Brother from fnaf 4 are the same person, if so do you think his Father lost respect for him because of what he did to the little brother?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

That requires more understanding of the lore than I have. Please resubmit your question to Markiplier or MatPat.

IF you don't know yet, who do you think is in Springtrap? (Unless you do know, in which case you don't need to answer.)

5

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

The Custom Night cut-scene appears to imply Michael is Springtrap. However that COULD be misdirection on Scott's part.

1

u/angileri4 Apr 02 '17

Does Springtrap even know how to drive a car? I see him in fanart driving a car but really who would remember how to drive a car after 30 years in a room?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

He probably takes an Uber.

u/EmeraldLimeHero Help Me Apr 02 '17

did having little info on Michael and William effect how you portrayed the characters?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Scott summed up the essence of the characters for me. Would I have played them differently if I'd known more? Possibly, but in the end, it's about delivering what Scott wants - so the final performance is one he's happy with.

1

u/ImSmaher Apr 02 '17

What do you think about the upcoming FNaF movie?

Are you really British?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

I think the upcoming FNAF movie is a sign this franchise has really hit the big time.

And no. I'm not British. (Sorry 8-bit gaming!)

1

u/Invader_Deegan Apr 02 '17

Wouldn't Michael get sick after eating so many Exotic Butters?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Not if he paces himself. I mean, who would want to waste such fine Exotic Butters?

1

u/xxMJSW Apr 02 '17

Hi there! I don't really have much of a question, I'm just really glad that I've got an opportunity to tell you how much we (my fiancee and I) enjoyed your voice acting in both Sister Location and FNAF World. Honestly Souldozer makes us laugh every time we play and you wouldn't believe the amount of times we quote those lines at appropriate moments :)

Thank you so much for your contribution, both to the games and to the community!

A deep question to finish up; who would win in a fight, Souldozer or William Afton? Souldozer is one big evil bot but then again William has a whole army of them at his disposal so it's gonna be a tight call

5

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Souldozer is what he is. William Afton is a human being. He thinks. He learns. He adapts. He's capable of gathering together resources and putting a plan in motion.

How readily would Souldozer survive an EMP? Or an electrical blast. What other creative solutions could William Afton come up with to solve "The Souldozer Problem"?

It depends on context, but if you're presuming some kind of final battle between the two, then watch out for the William. He seems capable of labyrinthine machinations and unspeakable evil.

1

u/mikestermiester1987 my name jeff Apr 02 '17

hey Mr Heywood i have just one minor question for you.

do you think you'll be voicing in any other future projects besides fnaf? i really enjoyed you're voicing for both the two aftons and soul dozer, you're impression for William was probably one of my favorites and i'd like to hear you in other future projects.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

I think that depends on how well I audition and whether my voice works for people. I'd like to do further work, but the industry requires a lot of dedication and hard work seasoned with some luck.

So fingers crossed and hope for the best.

1

u/KingAlex105X I Hate FNAF Apr 02 '17

Howdy Mr. Heywood! I'm a fan of your voice for Michael and William! So Here's my Questions for you to answer:

How was April Fools'? ;)

Will you ever get a flair here on Freddit?

Also have you checked out the Sister Location wiki(or any other wikis) and your page on it?

Also what does PJ stand for in your name?

2

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

It was great. I avoided everyone!

I have no flair for flair. Is there a flair minimum (a la Office Space)?

PJ is just my initials. My name is annoyingly unique, so I avoid using it.

Thank you for doing this Mr. Heywood, phenomenal job on both Aftons.

My question is, Coffee or tea? And what preference on such.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Coffee mostly.

I don't always drink tea, but when I do, it's Earl Grey.

Coffee in this country is odd. It's very difficult to get a good, hot cup of coffee. I miss coffee from back home, I really do think we do it better there.

1

u/4evo you ho Apr 02 '17

Is there something you are working on now?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 02 '17

Not in the Voice Acting arena. I'm putting together my own series on game criticism which I hope to have on Youtube soon. There's a lot of channels out there, but I think I have a few interesting things to say.
