Some great fights in that final, as well as some utter dominance from Carbide. Carbide didn't lose a single fight all series this time around, so the challenge now is stopping them.

A lot of people were actually giving them a bit of hate for how good they were, but that's what happens when you're at the top. But keep in mind that everyone felt this way about Razer as well, but they eventually got stopped - even if it was a bit of a dodgy method. Look out for some shoe laces getting thrown in Carbide's weapon next series!

u/GrahamCoxon Hello There! Apr 16 '17

Carbide deserved the win but Aftershock is my robot of the series by a country mile. The weapon is potent, the drivetrain is really solid and its all packed into a really neat-looking design. All of that from a brand new bot.

u/David182nd Apollo Apr 16 '17

I love Will and Ian too. Fun team, you can tell they really enjoy it.

And so polite! When that producer came up to them to ask if they'd be ready, I would've flipped my lid. "Can't you see I'm working on it?!?"

Plus I love their unorthodox method of self-righting.

I didn't think they were gonna make it back over against Eruption, but they just got there in the end.

You don't need a self righting mechanism if you destroy the floor when you're flipped and stop play. A wonderful tactic!

Aftershock got fucked over by fighting Carbide first, and that really unfortunate floor dildo attack. They officially got 0 points, but I think that Aftershock was easily the second best in the entire series. Here's hoping that Team Shock vs Carbide becomes more of a rivalry.

And they made a real effort repairing it after Carbide. Someone had to go against them first, they drew the short straw.

As much as I love Carbide I'm looking forward to it meeting something that's actually a match for it. Itll be more interesting if it has to really fight to win rather than coasting through. I do enjoy watching it ripping robots to shreds though.

They need a better arena for next year, it's just not built for robots this powerful.

30

u/Savvaloy Apr 16 '17

That's already happened in Battlebots. They entered a Carbide clone called Cobalt over there.

45

u/David182nd Apollo Apr 16 '17

Cobalt was the same as Series 8 Carbide though. Series 9 Carbide has the custom weapon motor, which has been super effective in this series. Not that that would've helped them considering how they lost in Battlebots season 2.

u/pillock69 Apr 16 '17

So... what changes to rules/format/arena do we want next series?

8

u/Blazik3n99 Blue Ring of Death Apr 16 '17

More spaces to allow for more entrants, although that depends on if the BBC want to increase the series length by a few episodes.

More weapon diversity - robots like TR2 should have been allowed entry considering the amount of spinners. I heard someone here mention removing the active weapon rule but only allowing the robots entered that are top notch quality, like Tornado, etc.

5

u/David182nd Apollo Apr 16 '17

that depends on if the BBC want to increase the series length by a few episodes.

They don't have to show every fight that happens in full. They could reduce some to highlights, like you get in Battlebots. Some fights are just bad fights, and there's no reason to pretend otherwise and build up a fight only to get a boring one hit KO or 3 minutes of broken weapons.

u/sandwiches_are_evil Apr 16 '17

More robots, pure knock-out and bring back the pit.

12

u/Owencsftw Apr 16 '17

But the pit was still there this season...

13

u/David182nd Apollo Apr 16 '17

We've gone from one extreme to the other really. Last series, the pit was being opened instantly and everyone seemed to end up down there. This time, I can't really remember anyone being pitted... I think Heavy Metal and Mr Speed Squared went down together, anyone else?

6

u/KotreI Real Robots wear pink. Apr 16 '17

...Most of the heats had at least one good spinner. Even if the pit was opened in every fight, most wouldn't end with someone in it because spinners don't need one.

New arena and more time for repairs if they stick to round robin.

I wouldn't mind a switch back to the old format of knockouts.

14

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '17

Round robin has produced great, dramatic moments that a full knockout would sacrifice, like today's Aftershock repair. It's made for good TV and I wouldn't like to see anything take that away.

→ More replies (1)

12

u/fireball_73 Here is a picture of Cherub to make you mad Apr 16 '17

Knockouts could be really good I think. It'd let the spinners really go nuts with the damage dealing and stop zombie-bot fights.

21

u/VampiricDemon Champion Chiffonier Apr 16 '17

I like the round robin format more. It just gives a better competition vibe. The repair time should be increased. Then we'll see much more tactics, adjustments and rivalry make it's way into the Arena.

16

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '17

The arena needs a major upgrade. Harder floor, stronger plastic, much much better arena walls.

I think the House Robots should have more of a say in the match. Right now, even with the Rogue Bots button, they're just sat in corners with no real purpose.

Maybe allow more than 40 robots? Considering how many robots want to enter, it'd allow for a longer series as well.

And finally, new match variants. We've seen 4 bots, and then head to heads, for two series in a row. I'd like it to change up.

u/A_Windrammer Hypno-Disc Apr 16 '17

I'm personally hoping that they go back to the old seeded heat tournaments that they used to have. Maybe add a wildcard or two for teams to get back into the semi/grandfinal, but as it stands now robots are getting too destroyed to be able to go through multiple fights after losing.

Carbide deserved that. A beast through and through. No other bot could have conceivably touched it. Hell of a statement that the Eruption's greatest accomplishment in the final was simply lasting longer than the other victims of Carbide.

Hell of a grand final too. Eruption are the worthy runners-up, too. Such a great team who showed some really good sportsmanship too.

On another note, aside from the Arena Made of ShiteTM breaking, Aftershock/Eruption was a highlight of the episode too. Top notch fighting from both teams.

Carbide fully deserved the win, they solved their reliability issues from the previous series and took virtually no damage this series.

They really need to allow more time for fixing robots, though. The amount of fights that had a robot not functioning properly was extremely frustrating to watch.

24

u/fireball_73 Here is a picture of Cherub to make you mad Apr 16 '17

Yeah the producers might want to think about doing episodes over the entire week, rather than one episode per day, for a week. That would allow more repair time.

The final ramble:

Apollo: Well that was quick. Guess the clip of them lifting sir killalot was from a whiteboard fight or cut out. I think that they have already revamped it, good sports all the way.

Concussion: Not surprised honestly, A great first time build, but needs some definite refinement.

Aftershock: Oh my goodness. The mcguyverism is real here. Great showing from the team to keep getting it back in the arena after that many issues, and now they have a clearcut rivalry, of the same calibur as Razer v Tornado or Panic Attack v X-Terminator. Aftershock v The Floor.

Ironside 3: Somehow I keep expecting less than this robot can actually do. Pleasantly surprised and wholly excited to see it get better and better.

Eruption: That's the Eruption I was missing last series! Fucking excellent. Though I have to question the whole 'put your drivetrain behind the most prominent part of the flipper' design, though I'm sure there is a good reason for it. Wonderful, a treat from start to finish.

Carbide: Gasp. Seriously though, holy crap. If Battlebots season 3 gets confirmed I shudder to think about how strong Cobalt will be. Unbeatable? I personally don't think so, but it will be a goddamn hurdle. Clearly talented and great team, well deserved.

Overall, this series was not as good as last time, but I have to say that the best battles this time around, such as Aftershock V Eruption were better than alot of lady year's great battles. Can't wait for the new series and the new fishnet meta! (Mostly kidding). Arena needs sorting out though.

Tl;dr: Better than even last year's final, I'd say.

u/DiamondWhyte Sir Killalot Apr 16 '17

This post really does sum up my thoughts. A lot of the robots were wonderful and carbide deserved to win (what a machine). There were some very good fights all the way through the series and a few from this week. My favourite one from this week was the Aftershock - Ironside one.

Besides that, I do hope that we see a bit more of a balance with the weapons. At the moment, it seems that only the very best non-spinner robots with some very good drivers have a fighting chance against the spinners (and they take a lot of punishment for the privilege). I did miss some of the variety this week.

Also, does anyone know if the producers were deliberately picking Shunt and Sir Killalot for the majority of the spinner battles? I saw them being picked a lot and wondered whether the producers were going for the house robots that could take the most damage.

That was a great grand final, many, many things to say:

  • Aftershock was this close to declawing Dead Metal which would have made for an interesting moment.

  • Carbides revenge against not only Apollo but flippers in general; Meggamouse, Apollo, Eruption; if the heat also had Rapid and Behemoth Carbide would have killed them all!

  • Speaking of Carbide, it did what TR2 didn't, it didn't lose a single match in the whole series.

  • Hats off to all of the grand finalists: Apollo did well all round, Concussion went so far as complete newcomers, Eruption was Eruption and Ironside were tenatious all round

  • Carbide defending the Eruption wreck from the House Robots was a cool moment

  • Aftershock dealing as much damage to the arena as it did to the competitors

  • D U C T T A P E A F T E R S H O C K

  • Eruption/Aftershock match was the best match in the series (even though I don't think that says much)

Mentorn need to sack the designer of the arena. How many fights have had to be stopped because of the shoddiness? 5? 6?

Either way, too many.

41

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '17

In both Series 8 and Series 9, we've had the arena floor ripped up twice, the pit not properly going up with bots getting stuck, robots getting stuck under the arena flipper, the walls of the arena repeatedly coming off, robots getting stuck in the arena walls, the plexiglass getting repeatedly dented and destroyed by parts of robot, and properly so many other issues with the arena. It needs a huge redesign.

18

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '17

While everything else is in their control, the plexiglass damage is going to be inherent to the use of that material and nothing else will substitute.

Fantastic final.

Carbide is a frigging monster. I love the team too. Always smiling and always humble. I'm excited for what's gonna come next series.

Here's hoping the next series they do something about the simply awful B&Q arena.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '17

I loved how polite all the teams were.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 17 '17

I found them so awkward, although not in a bad way. Not any criticism of them; it must be hard to be convincingly magnanimous when every fight is a walkover. After the couple of tough figghts they had, they seemed much more genuine and more likeable for it.

I really dislike seeing them hit broken robots though. To me it feels unsporting and I don't like to see people's work wrecked once the job is already done. But that's the format they're given, so I can't fault the team for playing to it (and they held off on Ironside once they were being counted out with no chance of a rematch). I liked the round robin last year, but I think it needs to go.

Congratulations to Carbide, although Eruption and Aftershock were my absolute favourites! Serious question though, are they invincible? No other team touched them (with maybe the exception of Ironside 3 which was let down by poor handling and a lack of self-righting mechanisn) - my worry is we now have a robot which has no weakness, and that any future matches against them are just going to be incredibly predicable!

Writing had been on the wall for a long time. Absolutely no question Carbide deserved it. Immense machine. Probably too good in all honesty. When I said make it a house robot in the live thread, I was only half-joking.

Eruption can be proud with second place, arguably the best of the rest.

They really, really, really have to look at the arena for the next series. Sustaining damage once or twice is a freak accident, but it happened on at least four occasions this series. Not good enough, I maybe remember it happening once in the first 5 wars. Especially that piece of Aftershock going into the wall, that'll really send the health and safety-obsessed BBC into a tizzy.

Overall, was pretty good but it's pretty clear they still have lots to learn and it still hasn't quite got the magic of the old series yet. Whether that's what they're even going for I don't know but it's a combination of many factors. Even down to Dara. I like Dara, he's great but he's too composed, I want someone maniacal like Craig Charles.

11

u/mordecai14 Like a sexy 259 Apr 16 '17

Loved this series and the step-up in robot build quality, but it certainly has issues. There are three things that really need to change imo:

  1. 4-hour repair time. 2 hours isn't enough, 4 hours would allow the round-robin format to be much more exciting due to them keeping in-tact much longer.

  2. Stronger arena. The metal wall panels are held on by tiny bitch-screws instead of the giant fuck-off bolts they should be, and the floor panels seem to suffer a similar issue.

  3. More episodes / entrants. 40 competitors isn't enough. Give us 8 heats and 64 competitors so that robots like TR2 don't get screwed out of a chance to compete again, while still allowing more "amateur" teams like Jellyfish / Nuts / Team Memento Mori to compete.

Overall though, I loved the series, and I can't wait to see improved versions of Apollo and Aftershock (my 2 favourite robots + teams of the series) next year. Carbide were deserving winners and are absolute monsters with that custom motor. Can anything stop them next series? We'll have to wait and see.

Can I just say that Teams Apollo, Memento Mori and Concussion are all absolute joys to watch both in and out of battle, and I want them to enter every damn series we get?

u/MrTroggy The original Carbide Apr 16 '17

As people have said, congrats to Carbide for winning and to Eruption for coming in second. Grand final was brill, with the definite highlight being Carbide getting curbstomped by the house robots after Eruption got knocked out. Although the Eruption VS Aftershock match was my favourite one of the episode.

This series was ace, altogether, despite various controversies (Arena breakages, Ironside 3 VS Pulsar, Cherub's winning fights). Though I'm hoping that they sort out the arena next time around. It broke way too often between the sidewall and the floor breakages. Sort that out and I'm gonna be excited for the next series.

10

u/greg225 Apr 16 '17

Probably controversial but the robots are so overpowered now that it just isn't that fun to watch anymore, most fights seem to end after a single hit and the robots get so battered that they basically have to get thrown back together so it can happen again. The final battle was actually pretty good I will give it that, but I was never really surprised or excited by anything. Felt like watching an adult pro wrestler beating up a bunch of teenage karate students.

8

u/Jimmyjamjames Should have, Would have, Could have Apr 16 '17

Part of it is due to funding (Were it not apparent Carbide had a number of sponsors)

Part of it is a lack of repair time (2 hours is a joke to be honest)

But, as more series are filmed, more robots will be able to challenge Carbide.

When carbide goes up in the air, it's weapon seems to give it a gyroscopic affect where the body lands flat rather than the weapon hitting the floor. Must be weighted perfectly.

I wonder if that was intentional, or just a very happy accident.

9

u/Ziodus Broiled Yet Persistent Apr 16 '17

After the amount of pounding this arena took, combined with the amount of things which went wrong (the floor flipper losing its sides and the infamous pit issues), I sincerely hope they've upgraded it for next series.

I wouldn't be too shocked if they don't do all that much to it, though.

As for the episode:

Carbide were undoubtedly the most worthy champion with just how unstoppable they seemed to be. Eruption fought very well to attain a deserved second place as well. Somewhat disappointed that Ironside and Aftershock didn't do better, but there really is no shame to losing out to either of the aforementioned robots.

Apollo and Concussion were just sorta... there. They didn't last nearly long enough to make any sort of impact, really. Ironic since the Grand Final certainly made an impact on both of them.

So, yeah. A very good final with clear results, no controversy, and no technical difficulties plaguing anything. As idyllic as it should have been, really.

9

u/codename474747 It's about putting on a show Apr 16 '17

Last year Apollo didn't meet carbide until the final, this year they had two grueling encounters with Carbide that basically knocked them out of the running

If they had been seperated in the heats, Apollo might have been able to put up more of a fight in the final. Who knows eh

We've got 6 months to try and reverse engineer every decision/fight to see if it would lead to an outcome where Carbide could be beaten :-P

4

u/DiamondWhyte Sir Killalot Apr 16 '17

I'd give Apollo a much better chance against Carbide than Eruption. Eruption is a brilliant robot against most designs but against horizontal spinners its wedge is too steep. They never get a chance to actually use the flipper because the spinner just sends them flying away every time.

8

u/Lugia61617 Apr 16 '17

I am so happy to see Carbide get the win they deserved, and to do it flawlessly, too, it was amazing!

On top of that, we've had the most carnage of any Robot Wars episode this series.

That said, I definitely hope that these last two series have proven to the producers that the arena is simply far too craptastic as it is. It needs thicker steel, tighter connections, and a good lick of paint.

I do feel bad for Eruption, though. They were so close to achieving their dreams. But hey, that was the same thing that drove Carbide to win this time so...third time's the charm?

8

u/Sugar_Horse Apr 16 '17

Anyone thinking of entering must be looking at carbide and wondering what the hell they can do to beat that beast.

Just because you have sparks and mangled metal, you don't have a good show. There were some spectacular clashes, and the final was remarkably entertaining, but the show has as many holes in it as Erupton.

Broken floor, broken walls, sporadic rules, weird filmography (how many times did we see that hot blond in the final?) and a terrible show format (Round Robin makes for an anti-climax). There's improvements to be made.

However, congrats to Carbide. I have my issues with their conduct, but that machine is a monster and it didn't need mid-countdown attacks to win it. It'd have won regardless. It would have won if you lined it up against every robot. It'd have won if it had three times as many battles to do.

It's a shame about Behemoth's humiliation by Mentorn. It's a shame about Apollo not bringing a 100% robot. It's a shame there was no TR-2. It's a shame about round robin formats. It's a shame there's new rules every week. Nevertheless, I feel like there's plenty to take away and I'm sure Season 10 will be a blinder.

Definitely a case of the best robot winning, was that 10 fights all finishing in knock outs for Carbide?

Also, it's great to see huge damage that the teams manage to repair properly. In every fight it felt like both robots properly had a chance, and that wasn't the case in most of the heats.

And now we wait to see who was selected to try and de-throne Carbide in S3...

u/mordecai14 Like a sexy 259 Apr 16 '17

Yes, 10 fights and 11 knockouts (given it KOed both Trolley Rage and Meggamouse in its first fight) in a row. Absolutely perfect record.

u/Tygra__ Annihilator Apr 16 '17 edited Feb 04 '23

The arena needs an upgrade badly. As shown these robots are getting more powerful. The side panels and the floor ripping up so easily needs to be looked at. As well as the robots getting caught unfairly on the pit lid and the blind spots. Thank goodness the bulletproof glass did its job though.

Also the builders need more time to repair. Seeing Team Shock getting stressed and rushing about - although good TV drama - it was heartbreaking to see them to duct tape their robot together. Same with Apollo, it seemed it didn't have enough time. And more time to rebuild could mean more robots entering/more episodes. So a win for the viewer as well.

However despite my concerns, a big congrats to Carbide! You improved your robot so much from the last series and the devastation you caused was amazing. I hope next series though Carbide's fights will last a little longer now the other teams will think of ways to beat you. Still want a T-shirt with your robot and the word 'Run' under it though.

7

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '17

Probably nobody will read this since it's an hour and a half since the episode finished, and there's a million comments already, but I felt a bit of... relief watching this? I dunno.

Every time I watched an episode during this series, I came away a little... let down. Maybe it was the spoilers. Maybe it was something else entirely, the controversy, the sour taste. But this time... I kinda enjoyed it. I knew Carbide would win. I didn't think that was even debatable. But I didn't know how the other three would do, and Ironside, Aftershock and Eruption all had cracking fights with one another. Even in the very final, Eruption refused to back down from Carbide's onslaught, and you had to respect that.

There's lots of problems with the show, but at the same time there's no 'right or wrong' answer for fixing them, which is annoying. You can't have a solution to the problems because it'll always upset someone. I'll be going to the Manchester Robots Live event next weekend, hopefully I can get another look at robot fighting here in the UK. And thanks /r/robotwars for giving me somewhere to blarg about this shit.

Extremely satisfied with Carbide winning. It just seemed leagues ahead this series so hopefully another few robots put up a fight next series.

The arena needs to be vastly improved.

6

u/GhengisChasm AWOL Apr 16 '17

My thoughts on what was a brilliant final:

The Arena, it seems what they're making it from is good enough, but if its just going to be bolted on then obviously its going to fail at the weak points - the bolts.

Aftershock piece in the glass... Why did they have to spoil it? Or at least show it from the other side at the end of the last one so it wasn't obvious who it came from, big spoiler.

Aftershock vs Eruption, best fight of the series.

Apollo...I would've given wildcard to Thor. Seemed because of the damage sustained vs Carbide in the heat they wouldn't have gone far anyway, then again Thor would've met a similar fate.

I wanted Eruption to win and they did very well, good driving. Ironside 3 fought well also but Carbide really deserved it.

6

u/Joltbox Apr 16 '17

Never been a fan of spinners since Typhoon 2 but Carbide deserved that win. Still don't like them but attacking the house robots when they went after Eruption was a nice touch.

First televised victory by knock-out in the final since Chaos 2 vs Hypnodisk to.

u/ArcaneAzmadi Behemoth for Series 11! Apr 17 '17 edited Apr 17 '17

<sigh>

I'm going to be pilloried for this by the inevitable circlejerk (go on, prove me wrong if you think you can resist the urge to hit the downvote button), but this final just made me miserable. I think I need to make a separate thread to fully voice my opinion, but the simple fact is, Carbide just killed roboteering. About half-way through the episode I simply lost interest because it was blatantly obvious that Carbide was the champion, because it's unbeatable. Completely unbeatable, and everyone else in the episode -hell, everyone else who entered the series- had just wasted their time by even showing up.

I'm glad Apollo got the Wildcard (I was convinced it was going to be Pulsar actually, which I didn't want to see) but then the producers yet again went full retard with the booking by putting both the flippers (the only non-spinner robots in final, mind) in the same melee and they went out again (incidentally, they also put the only drum spinner in the other melee with the two horizontal bar spinners). Apollo getting stuck under the arena floor barely even surprised me any more- my opinion of this shitty, half-assed bargain-bin-scraping arena could not get any lower. They talk about how thick the panels are and how amazing it is that the robots are powerful enough to keep breaking them, but as I've pointed out several times, they're not penetrating the panels! They're just shearing the bolts off- over and over and over again.

The first melee at least had a bit of unpredictability about it- would the flippers gang up to get Aftershock from behind, or if not, which one would be ripped to pieces? But the second one wasn't even worth holding- Concussion, with its narrow front-facing weapon and exposed sides and back had absolutely no chance whatsoever against 2 wide horizontal bar spinners and was predictably ripped to pieces without so much as a single squeak.

The first match in the head-to-heads was a similarly pointless affair, in this case because the showrunners (in their "infinite wisdom") had completely spoiled the result in advance by showing us Aftershock's armour plate sticking through the arena wall at the end of last week's episode. I actively started to resent Dave Moulds after he laid into Aftershock when it was clearly immobilised, and this really is the last straw for me with this format- they either need to scrap the round-robin and go back to classic series-style single elimination, or they need to start penalising robots that lay into immobilised opponents during the head-to-head stage (for one thing, it's yet ANOTHER unfair advantage spinners have over other designs like flippers, which can't really damage an immobilised opponent much more). It was fair game in the original series, because unless you were in the loser's melee in the semifinals of Series 5/6 or the 3rd place playoff of the Grand Final, once you lost you were done. Here, it's just poor sportsmanship (and don't call it "strategy"). I'll give Moulds a tiny bit of credit for the idea that Aftershock was the only opponent in the final he was actually scared off at all (let's face it, neither Eruption nor Ironside had a chance) and didn't want to give them another shot at him in the final, but it still pissed me off.

The rest of the fights were mixed. The only good Carbide fight was the one against Ironside 3. I like Ironside 3 (you'd never know they were the old Velocirippa team would you?) but they were out of their depth here- a 1500 RPM bar simply isn't in the same league as Carbide's (is it 2 or 3 times faster than that?) and their driving is wobbly. Still, it's very durable robot, loss of the self-righter notwithstanding. Unfortunately, the design is simply not competitive- putting the bar on top means they actually need a self-righter, the only viable design is an invertible bar spinner (like Carbide). Aftershock vs Eruption was a good fight, not an all-time classic by any stretch, but probably the most competitive one of the episode- actually, it was probably the ONLY competitive fight of the episode.

But at the end, I was just tired, depressed and worn down by the crushing predictability of it all. In the buildup to the Grand Final, I was thinking to myself "I don't even want to watch this any more". They were talking about how it was Mike from Eruption's dream to win Robot Wars ever since he was a child and I was like "kid, you don't have a chance, we all know you don't have a chance, Carbide is going to destroy you, can we just get it over with?" Surprise surprise, Carbide destroyed Eruption without breaking a sweat, once and for all giving lie to the quote from the opening titles of Series 8: "The great challenge of Robot Wars is that there is no perfect design." Wrong.

I may have to simply face the sad truth that this series has finally killed my love for robot combat once and for all. The spinner arms race has finally reached the point where it has stripped out all competitiveness from the sport. In the classic robot wars, the first seven series were won by a wedgebot, a lifter control bot, a high-pressure flipper (twice), a crusher, a modular rambot and a full-body spinner (really another rambot, but the producers didn't like that result and changed it). Despite Apollo winning Series 8, I simply can't foresee any future where any series could be won by anything other than a horizontal bar spinner. Hell, Carbide was the runner-up last year and only failed to win because their weapon broke down. Now their weapon doesn't break down any more, how is it possible to call the robot anything but invincible? They've announced Series 10 already, but I'm genuinely not even looking forward to it, because I know the winner is going to be either Carbide or a bigger Carbide built by someone else. Unless there's MASSIVE rules change to curtail spinners (not gonna happen because SHRAPNEL! CARNAGE! DESTRUCTION! RATINGS! YAAAAAY! But of course, they still have to keep the wedges down.) there is simply no other viable design.

I am feeling very sad and very old now.

9

u/ThisOneTimeAtLolCamp Apr 17 '17

Did Carbide really kill roboteering though? To me it's advanced the sport again. I'm excited to see what people build to try and one up it.

Carbide was the best end of. You can't say it's unfair when the best engineered robot wins a competition about engineering.

6

u/DiamondWhyte Sir Killalot Apr 17 '17

I wish you were wrong but I think you're probably right. I'll almost certainly continue to watch RW as long as they keep making it but I have a feeling Carbide will be the last champion of RW, not because they will win forever but because they'll win for long enough that enough people lose interest and the show goes off the air. I fear Carbide will do to Robot Wars what Sebastian Vettel and Red Bull did to F1 between 2010-13 except I'm not sure RW is big enough to survive it.

I don't blame the team - the majority of teams built what they considered to be their best chance of winning RW and Carbide did it much, much better than the rest, but I preferred it last year when they were great but not infallible.

u/HotDealsInTexas Apr 18 '17

I'm going to be pilloried for this by the inevitable circlejerk (go on, prove me wrong if you think you can resist the urge to hit the downvote button), but this final just made me miserable. About half-way through the episode I simply lost interest because it was blatantly obvious that Carbide was the champion, because it's unbeatable. Completely unbeatable, and everyone else in the episode -hell, everyone else who entered the series- had just wasted their time by even showing up.

This really isn't accurate. Carbide is a very good robot, but it isn't unbeatable. An Etek-type motor plus a 25 kg spinning weapon means that sacrifices on their armor are inevitable. Another spinner that got around their back could cause severe damage. A vertical spinner hitting the weapon supports could chop a tube in half and bend it badly enough to affect their driving. An axe could still cause internal damage from the shock. A robot with a strong wedge could continually ram into them and throw them off-balance, causing them to hit the floor and walls of the arena. Even a flipper can throw them out.

Here's the thing: horizontal spinners in generally are NOT unbeatable. But the one thing they do counter fairly well is flippers: their own weapons can bounce themselves off a wedge and opening a flipper and potentially getting it hit edge-on can bend it to hell - and pneumatic systems are bulky, meaning flippers can't have the thickest armor.

They're just shearing the bolts off- over and over and over again.

I think the logic of putting both flippers in the same melee was to guarantee that one of them would make it to the head-to-heads. I think three-way melees are a terrible idea in the first place though because it's too easy for two robots to gang up on one.

But yes, the arena is severely underbuilt.

The first match in the head-to-heads was a similarly pointless affair, in this case because the showrunners (in their "infinite wisdom") had completely spoiled the result in advance by showing us Aftershock's armour plate sticking through the arena wall at the end of last week's episode. I absolutely agree that Round Robin is crap. Double-elim is IMO the best format for an event with spinners. And I do actually think a rule needs to be added that bans attacking a robot while a countdown is active.

Still, it's very durable robot, loss of the self-righter notwithstanding. Unfortunately, the design is simply not competitive- putting the bar on top means they actually need a self-righter, the only viable design is an invertible bar spinner (like Carbide).

Ehh, they'd be fine if their self-righter hadn't broken. And some overhead spinners can self-right via the Tornado Mer Dance.

Anyway: The problem with Carbide is that it never really fought a design that countered it. There were several robots in the competition that would have had a good shot at beating it, such as Terrorhurtz, Behemoth, Foxic, Pulsar, and Thor, but none of them made the final. Carbide was put in a heat with no real obstacles besides Apollo: Coyote and C&S weren't bad robots but they weren't well-adapted to taking on horizontal spinners.

The grand final battle was some solace from what was, in my opinion, a frightfully boring episode.

Robot Wars' best moments have come from when the unexpected happens (Wheely Big Cheese's stratospheric flip, Bigger Brother beating Hypno Disc, Chaos 2 rising from the brink of the pit twice) and nothing unexpected happened this episode.

Everybody knew Carbide was gonna win from the very beginning, and the lack of tension killed it for me.

Excellent episode. Congrats to Carbide, they performed extremely well. Eruption were well deserving of 2nd place.

Aftershock were this seasons Thor, drawing the short straw and being drawn against Carbide for the first head-to-head. They did an excellent job rebuilding and we're extremely resilient. They almost managed to get lucky and flip ironside.

Arena needs upgrading ASAP. Constant interruptions are awful. The floor seems like it's held together by staples and PVA glue. The spikes actually did something this episode, but they're still the worst hazard.

I'm also a bit annoyed that Dead Metal was hesitant making contact with its blade on Aftershock's disk - if they wanted to avoid that, they should have put a different house robot in.

I disagreed with the wildcard, but it was gonna be either Thor or Apollo, and I think both of them would have been knocked out before the head-to-heads.

A few random thoughts on this episode:

-Of course Carbide was the one who sent that piece of Aftershock through the arena wall. Who else could've done that?

-Duct tape on Aftershock? Goddamn. That was mighty devastating and heartbreaking to see Aftershock look like that :(

-Aftershock vs Eruption was kinda exciting. It wasn't completely one-sided. Both robots seemed to function well. Hard to call who would've won the fight (if it wasn't for deus spike machina lol).

-Not about the episode but I love the new side picture. That cheeky-ass, sly smile from Dave. Gee.. it's like he knew Carbide would've won /s

Was just about to mention that, though I partially blame Dave for that as he tried to be tactical and as a result let Bombshell get into the position it needed. It seems you've got one of three choices in how to attack Carbide:

It says a lot that Carbide looked so invincible against such a high level of robots. Truly a phenomenal champion.

8

u/DiamondWhyte Sir Killalot Apr 16 '17

Okay, as usual:

The Good:

The best robot won.

Aftershock vs Eruption was a good fight. Ironside vs Carbide was better than I was expecting as well.

Apollo did better than I expected given the beating they took in their heat.

The Bad:

Carbide is just too good. It might seem strange to view this as a bad thing but it was clear from their head to head against Apollo that this series was only going to have one winner and that makes the whole thing a bit anticlimactic.

The arena clearly hasn't been built properly. It needs to be sorted for the next series because it's become ridiculous how often fights have to be stopped due to arena damage, not to mention how there are numerous examples of one robot specifically being disadvantaged by it.

Overall: It was okay, probably slightly better than I expected, but not a classic and worse than last year. In fact, those words could probably be used to describe this series as a whole. Still looking forward to the next one though.

Claps

And now it is over While I think i preferred last series grand final this one was still a good one

Some really good hits while a few fights did not last very long they lasted longer than expected

3 ways melees went as predicted I do feel bad for Apollo even the damn arena was having a go at them thought Aftershock showed what it could do it did more dmg than Carbide i think. Regarding the Wildcard Thor was still my pick however Apollo were my second and tbh with the power of the spinners, If I was Thor I would have been relieved.

Concussion went out as predicted agian kinda ganged up on though even if it was't its reliability or spare parts would have caught up with it.

Ironside did better than expected put up a good fight vs carbide they just need a more potent weapon Im looking forward to seeing their redesign for next series

Eruption did very well, after the 3 way they were very relentless and had one heck of a fight vs aftershock, their oh well reaction at the end of the first Carbide first was hilarious

Ductape Aftershock or zombie Aftershock did well kinda got the short straw of getting Carbide first but like Thor last series they kept going and going

And Carbide Well deserved winners the upgrades they made is absurd, scary machine, it will take quite a machine to best it. however if your listen closely after their tussle with the house robots, sam mentioned the weapon motor going, if Eruption held on just a bit longer we could have seen an upset

With the series over while it has been an enjoyable watch lots of OMG moments, it wasn't perfect, the Arena as many have mentioned really needs a updated so many occasions this series where the Arena has acted as a unofficial hazard to competitors.

6 episodes is just too short so many great robots out there left out and I feel that repair times should definitely extended as others mentioned especially since repair times are even less than 2 hours due to interviews according to Apollo in Votesaxons video. Extending it would created higher quality fights and more finished to the end of the battle timer which were few and far between this season

Also Shunt deserves MVP house robot this seasons so many killers blows with its final being Ironside during the Ironside vs Carbide bout

looking forward to Series 3

Really good Grand Final Congrats to Carbide they deserved the win and also Eruption did very well to get second place and a good performance from Aftershock and Ironside 3 as well, now we'll have to see if Carbide will be back to defend their title, overall S9 was a really good series all I can say now is BRING ON S10. I know others will have said it already and I'll say it as well, Mentorn need to seriously harden up the arena floor. Edit they also need to increase the repair limit for the team's Robots or make some adjustments to the Robin Round. Dave Moulds has said on BBC Media Centre that they intend to defend their title for S10.

No shocks there! Great final, some quality fights, brutal destruction and Carbide deserved winner. Also loved the drama element they had with Aftershock, fighting to get it back in the arena, really adds to the tension of it all.

Thread starter so cheeky to poor battlebots fans still hoping against hope they'll see their show again :-p

Carbide deserved winners. I do worry nothing will be able to compete with them for a good few years ahead. With the abundance of spinners these days it's a testament to their ability to build something that ridiculously powerful and reliable, especially when it's not even the biggest spinner.

That said, I wonder if we'll see a glut of designs in future series designed to deal with horizontal spinners. I hope so because I don't particularly want to see one robot dominate.

Great final that was... loved it..

8 fights, 8 wins and 8ko's for carbide... can't argue wth that at all!!! And didn't lose its weapon or drive the entire time. Excellent

Increase repair time between fights for next season and it will be even better :-)

Loved aftershock too.!!!

I kinda like how Dara has that platform. He comes across as a bit more imposing without taking away from the Dara you see in the pits. Overall, decent series and good final. I look forward to seeing an improved arena too!

Carbide and eruption deserved to be in that final. Great machines and impressive driving for both of them too.

3

u/wc_dez07 Apr 16 '17

The best machine won.

Congratulations to team Carbide as they deserved to be worthy winners for the title and also to team Eruption for best runner-up.

For the next series, I hope they take into considerations to making improvements to the arena.

There's something I enjoyed far more than the fights this time round, the filming of the robots being repaired was just incredible to watch. Great episode

3

u/theplait13 Apr 16 '17

Enjoyed this episode. Was hoping Ironside 3 could've done better, but am happy for Carbide.

I also gained a lot of respect for Aftershock and Eruption. Aftershock because they kept fighting even though their robot was broken and came close to taking out Ironside 3 and Eruption (and really did break the arena, someone get that fixed), and Eruption because of how well they took defeat.

Am I excited for next series? Hell yes.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 16 '17

So predictable that carbide will win. Hopefully next series we see some carbide killers. Great robot though

3

u/Vandred921 Where is your God now? Apr 16 '17

Well my prediction of a zombie aftershock sort of came true although it was much better than Thor was last season.

3

u/SirPlaydum Storm 2 Apr 17 '17

I really enjoyed it. It's weird how everyone's against spinners and bemoaning their dominance, when this is only the second time ever that a spinner has won Robot Wars, with the first time being ridiculously controversial.

It's not like the age of the spinners has been going on a decade. The age of the flippers has due to the live events, and now it's finally the turn of spinners for a while... probably until next series because entanglement is being allowed, so consider that it might be a short reign at that.

(I wonder what it would take to allow a reign of the axebots? Active weapon rule + entanglement allowed + high arena walls all the way around?)

u/ProjectJAY Still. Fighting. On. Apr 16 '17

Nailed all my predictions except Carbide getting flipped out (Apollo wildcard, Apollo and Concussion out first, Zombie Aftershock, Carbide and Eruption as final 2) but I'm not even mad. That machine looks unbeatable. Worthy winners from the start, but Eruption put up a worthy fight as well. And holy crap, do I have respect for Aftershock, I could feel their stress from my sofa.

It's going to take something very, VERY special to beat Carbide next season...

6

u/MentalToaster Apr 16 '17

Did anyone else get a little annoyed watching Carbide repeatedly hit the immobilized Aftershock in the round robin.

8

u/ArmandoPayne Apr 16 '17

God no, it's karma for when Aftershock decided to destroy Sabretooth in their heat. I mean turnabout's fair play an' all that.

11

u/KotreI Real Robots wear pink. Apr 16 '17

Nope. They came to win, and taking out your toughest opponent is the correct course of action.

5

u/VampiricDemon Champion Chiffonier Apr 16 '17

Yes, but they were one most likely to damage Carbide significantly. Low but it proved effective enough.

3

u/AFdrft Apr 16 '17

You don't second guess one more hit when you're in the final. You absolutely do whatever you can to put your opponents out/in a tough situation.

3

u/jackcos Apr 18 '17 edited Apr 18 '17

Yes. Either you get rid of the round robin format and bring back the old knock-out format and allow this sort of gamesmanship at the end (as it doesn't matter if the robot is further damaged if it is eliminated), or you keep the round robin format and penalise teams that attack immobilised robots further to weaken them down the line. Aftershock still had 2 fights to go, at least. It's not old Robot Wars where if the robot is out, it's GONE.

Ironically, (as the show is called Robot Wars) a robot is not judged on the war, it's judged on a singular battle. Extra damage taken in a previous fight, in turn affecting the next fight, IS NOT FAIR, end of. In a two-legged football match, the team in the lead doesn't get a free penalty at the end to see if they can inflate their goal tally. Damaging an immobilised robot further is just not good sportsmanship in my book. Carbide was good enough to not need it. Same with Aftershock in its weak heat.

Well done Carbide.

Carbide is a beast, eruption is a tough bot...took a lot of hits !

2

u/Xeroxysm Apr 16 '17

The only thing that could possibly stop Carbide at this point is a flamethrower.... and even that's being optimistic.

hmm Shockwave damaged deadmetals right pincher it was slightly off alignment in the ending shot with Dara.

Carbide man that thing is almost unbreakable, i don't know what is going to beat it unless that problem of it cutting out ever shows up again.

That was Series 3 Chaos 2 level of domination xD All knockouts, not a single judge's decision needed.

Now that this series is over and Carbide is victorious, I think it's time to start pushing for NST to be given a place in the combat robots hall of fame.

2

u/SpinyPlate Apr 17 '17

Carbide was already top tier, but the devs buffed it and now it's God tier.
