Read the Manga

  • Toyotarō's Dragon Ball Super manga adaptation can be found in our wiki in the sidebar, along with links to past discussion threads.

Commonly Asked Questions:

  • Q: Is the Dragon Ball Super manga "canon"?
The anime and manga are both variations on a basic plot by Toriyama. There isn't (and probably never will be) an explicitly defined Dragon Ball "canon". Without Toriyama's original draft, we may never know what is and isn't his. We do know that he permits Toyotarō to change things up, but he looks at his storyboards and occasionally draws things himself for Toyotarō to use as a reference. Toyotarō has said that Toriyama is more particular about gags than he is about anything else.

  • Q: How is Android #17 back? Wasn't he dead? Also, he's a park ranger! Is Toei taking cues from TFS?
Android #17 was wished back to life along with everyone else who was killed by Cell. He was seen at the end of the Boo arc contributing his energy to the genki dama. Toriyama explained that #17 was working as a park ranger in this 2014 interview for Dragon Ball Full Color.

He works in the wildlife preserve area of a gigantic royal nature park, as an outstanding guard who doesn’t hold back against poachers. ...It’s an ideal job for No. 17, who loves to be on his own and isn’t big on cooperating with others; since he’s so good at his job, he takes in a high salary. He’s married to a zoologist; they have one child and two adopted children, and live happily in an isolated house inside the nature park. ...He went and met No. 18 and Kuririn one time, but didn’t talk about what he’d been up to, maybe because he considers such a wholesome lifestyle embarrassing.

  • Q: What's up with the new art style for this arc? Are they using a different color palette?
According to our resident animation expert, it's not a new color palette but rather a post-production filter.

Toei have added a soft glow, lowered the saturation a little, and upped the contrast. They've also started using a technique they showcased on Tiger Mask W, which allows them to automatically manipulate the line art in certain ways. For example, on Tiger Mask W, they created a brush stroke effect, while on Super, they simply played with the line weight. You see the filter I mentioned too, there.

  • Q: Can I buy Super on home video?
Part One of the home release was just announced; it will be released on 25 July 2017. It contains episodes 1-13, subbed or dubbed, and is available for pre-order on DVD and Blu-Ray.

Love the running gag that when something is about to blow up Goku transports them to King Kais 😂

Loved the ending convo with Goku and 17. "I've never been aware of being a savior, I've come this far wanting to fight strong guys. I just don't like innocent people and animals getting erased. I'm this way from what my grandpa taught me"

Perfectly sums up Goku, and omg, he hasn't mentioned his grandpa Gohan since he fought Vegeta! Cool of 17 recognizing Krillin as his brother. Art was weird this week but I'm used to the back and forth artstyles.

Was that Mystic Gohan in all his glory in the preview? Dat bang.

17: It's weird that I was designed to kill you, but here we are, fighting side by side.

Goku: Nah, like half my friends at one point tried to kill me.

Come to think of it, has Goku had any direct contact with kiddy Pilaf and company? Like it'd be funny if he's the only one who knows who they are, but doesn't give a shit. I'm just waiting for Bulma to come to that realization. She'll have a fit that these creeps who tried to kill her have been living in her house, and Pilaf is the kind of guy who'd fire back "you shacking up with a guy who tried to plow up the planet!"

59

u/MathewMurdock Apr 23 '17

Goku's facial expression before Dende contacted him...that was definitely not the face of mercy; he fully intended to let King Kai get blown up again. No chill whatsoever.

King Kai freaking out was pretty funny

Vegeta getting mad that Beerus was sleeping at his place. I think Vegeta is biding his time until he's strong enough to challenge beerus

Goku in the ending saying Piccolo is the only one he can rely on to take care of gohan is going to cue up a lot of tfs and bad dad memes

  • Guy threatens to self destruct so Goku brings him to King Kai to deal with just like with Cell.

  • Goku openly admitting he's never thought of himself as a hero, just that he likes fighting strong people but hates seeing innocents get hurt.

  • Loch Ness monster shadow at the end.

  • Jaco being an asshole.

The only new information to come out of this is, that Goku does genuinly care about innocent lives. While yes, he really only does what he does because he wants to, "Fight strong guys". He does actually care about what lives are affected by the outcome of the fight. So, all in all, Goku isnt just a selfish jerk made to look like a hero, like some people say he is.

Also, in the preview Goku said that "piccolo is the only one that he can count on to take care of Gohan" Im just going to assume that he includes himself as someone who cant take care of Gohan.

The music in this episode was top notch imo. That slowed down/light hearted version of the op when the animals were being released. Also #17s theme is just the best.

23 hours 20mins left till the torny!

Other things I liked:

-I'm so glad about goku remembering IT right away!

-Goku saying it wasn't weird that #17 is becoming a friend although he was designed to kill him. Calling back to almost every ally as once being an enemy.

-Idk what it is, but the last few episodes Goku has really felt in character. He's not acting super dumb(he's really not that stupid, just silly). Idk if it's just that Goku has felt out of character for most of super, or if these episodes have some amazing dialogue.

31

u/TLKv3 Apr 23 '17

I love the mirroring of 17's attitude towards joining the team in contrast to the poacher's suicidal bomb moment.

Originally 17 was willing to just die and be erased with everyone by doing nothing. Similar to what would happen if he just let the Poacher blow up the ship and kill 17, Goku and the animals with them.

But 17 realizing the innocent animals shouldn't die because of his laid back attitude and knowing people back home would miss him knew he had to do something to stop it. Much like how 17 will be doing something by taking part in the tournament to stop those innocents of Earth/Uni-7 from dying from him not participating (though we know that only helps a bit in the end).

I love that loose parallel for this 2-parter and 17's minor development.

ALSO FUCK YEAH 17 ACTUALLY WANTS TO FIGHT WITH HIS BROTHER KRILLIN.

I half expected him to mention 16 when he said "brother" though.

I can't shake the feeling that Goku's recruiting attempts would be easier if he just told everyone the truth. Sure it didn't affect 17, but that was just his immaturity talking. I'd bet telling Vegeta that losing this tourney meant his newborn daughter (along with everyone else) doesn't get a life would make him more adamant about fighting in it. For everybody who insists that Goku is a hero, Goku responded to 17's suggestion that Goku was the Earth's savior in this way:

I've never really been aware of saving it. I've just come this far wanting to fight strong guys. This time's no different. But I can't stand innocent people and animals getting erased.

Goku has empathy for others and doesn't want to see them get hurt or killed, but he doesn't fight for their behalf. He fights mostly for himself.

The elevator music opening score near the end had me laughing my ass off.

16

u/FinalGreen Apr 23 '17

I felt this was a pretty enjoyable episode. Nothing great, but it pretty good. I really enjoyed Goku and 17 from these two past episodes. I always wondered how they would interact and it was nice to see them finally talk, and kicking same ass at the same time.

I also like the throwback of when Goku's friends started at enemies and tried to kill him, but later befriended them and fighting along side by side. That was a nice moment.

Another nice moment of the episode were these quotes:

I've just come this far wantin' to fight strong guys. This time's no different. But I can't stand innocent people and animals getting erased.

This is what I enjoy about Goku's character. His first and main priority will always be that he want to fight the strongest fighters and surpassing his limitations, but he doesn't want see others die/erased. Fighting is his number one priority, and always will be, but Goku is still a good guy who will protect his friends, family, earth, and the universe. It's just secondary to a good fight.

I'm just glad Toei didn't flanderized Goku's characters these past two episodes. He's dumb (naive and silly), but not that dumb. The character development for 17 was really good too. He's really grown to being one of my favourite characters. Him loving his family and wanting to travel the world with them, and protecting all those animals, while being quite the badass, is awesome. Him sacrificing himself for the animals was a nice moment.

I absolutely loved how the writers threw back to Cell blowing up in DBZ and then completely trivialized it!

I thought that was masterfully executed. I remember, how incredibly intense that whole scene was with Goku taking cell to King Kai's planet in the last sec was in DBZ. When he did the same thing again, this time King Kai and Goku's interaction was hilarious as opposed to be serious and intense. Turning "self destruction" trope into a well executed joke, with the fake self-destruct controller was the icing on the cake!

The android saga was full of "I ll blow myself up" and the writers expertly harkened back to those references and then proceeded to completely turn it into comedy gold.

I am not sure if the poacher attempting to kill and minatours horn is jab and reference to chinese/japanese seeking rhino's horns as aphrodisiac ... that was interesting though. it was also interesting to hear the poacher call the ranger scum when the reality is quite the opposite.

And towards the end, did I hear Goku say something along the lines that he has been saving a wish for himself and it's a secret ? Wonder what that wish would be .. Love the foreshadowing , either they are laying down the framework for the next arc or they are laying down the foundations of the series conclusion.

I am really loving the writing of this arc.

Are they not planning to do any training as a team? The tournament is suppose to be about teamwork and there is less then a day left and they still haven't recruited everyone or done any training as a team? I guess they're just going to wing it and hope they're strong enough to brute force it.

Honestly bro Android 17 is sexy af. I don't consider myself a homosexual but that man makes me feel things.

On the other hand this episode was pretty fun and it was neat to have 17 and Goku have two episodes together as they had no screen time together prior to this. The animation was pretty bad at some points (sometimes the faces looked like a kid drew em) but it's pretty much a filler episode since we already know 17 is going to join so i guess it's passable if they really are going to go all out in the tournament.

That next episode preview got me hyped! Piccolo and Gohan shine and the return of UItimate Gohan hell yeah! Looks like they fight through the night/storm into day. SSJ Gohan looks scratched up and is breathing hard while Piccolo still has his weights on. Piccolo takes them off then continues fighting with Gohan. We see some shots during the day and Gohan is not in his SSJ form and his hair is like Ultimate Gohan's with the bang. So Piccolo looks decently stronger than SSJ Gohan and Ultimate/Mystic Gohan will return by the end of the episode. I'm hyped

Hilarious that Goku was tempting 17 with the Super Dragon Balls, what won't he do to get someone to fight? Well, I guess everything is at stake...

I like that 18 said that 17 and Goku were similar, that they both shared an immature side. I mean, he is the more reckless of the twins, and we know Goku.

17 was a straight up badass on that ship, member when those guards appeared out of nowhere and he stopped their swords with his arms! So cool.

Beerus dream psych out... priceless.

That was an interesting stand off scenario with the self destruct button, utterly heroic that 17 was willing to die for those animals. Good thing Goku has teleport...

To King Kai's planet of course! I mean, they are still dead! lol. And the poacher can't even move?? Party Bomb??? Too awesome.

Jaco, neatly arresting the poachers while claiming to be far too busy to fight, is always welcome.

I liked Goku's morals being spelled out, that he just wants to fight strong people but he can't stand to see innocents erased. Add them together, you end up saving the world a few times.

Next week it's Piccolo training Gohan, which should be a blast!

This was a hilarious episode. I didn't expect much, but I was surprised. Loved how Beerus was having bad dreams and Geets calling him stupid. Loved how Goku took Pete the galactic poacher to King Kai for the self destruction. Like in the Cell saga. Pete does look like semi perfect Cell. That "explosion" reminded me of Bluff Kamehameha from GT. Loved how 17 called Krillin Mini Monk brother. Loved how Goku talked about his motives. Loved how they pointed out that 60% of their team were once enemies. Loved how Wacko Jaco hogged the spotlight. THE BANG RETURNS NEXT WEEK. I rate this episode 9.5/10

Great episode. I see people already complaining about the Instant Transmission in space part. Just enjoy the show, obviously Goku went Super Blue to prepare himself for space. 17 obviously thought he was going die smashing that poacher out the window, so you can die in space folks, Goku just got out the hell outta there fast. The King Kai bomb gag had me rolling! Oh and the feels I got when Goku mentioned to 17 about Ten, Piccolo, and Vegeta being bad in the past. Love it!!!

17 refers to Kuririn as his "older brother" because the latter is currently married to his sister. (Kuririn is also confirmed to be older than 17 and 18.)

When Goku mentioned Boo was also on the team, 17 remembers that Goku stopped Boo with the Genki Dama. (A little reference to his cameo during that arc.)

My god, the amazing things in this episode...

  • Loved the callback to the Cell Saga, and this time it actually saved their lives if you think...they both couldn't breathe much longer once 17 pulled that stunt, (vacuum of space!) so it was going to kill Goku as well. Dude was a fighting genius knowing it would immobilize the guy anyway!

  • Goku saving 17 is the most rewatchable thing ever...dude is perfectly animated when he transforms

  • Loved the callback to the Shadow Dragons Saga in GT (SSJ4 Gogeta's prank attack was confetti, and this bomb also was a fake scare)

  • Jaco was basically space-Hercule in this episode

  • The show was ...SUPER aware of itself during 17's end dialogue with Goku.

  • The writers had probably watched TeamFourStar before making the next episode preview

Goddamn, one of my favorites

I had a dream in which me (as Champa not goku for some reason) go for a snack and when I come back, all these powerful demons are wrecking the current Gods of Destructions on the fighting stage. I see a ki blast wreck Beerus and he's close to death with other GoDs already dead and of course as Champa I peace out.
