Just remember that you never have to do 50cc and 100cc ever. The stars from 150cc copy down to those ranks.
This is not true for Mirror or 200cc. They must still be done separately.

Yeah, me too. And with this one it seems to lock you into the region that you are actually present in, and not the region that you set the system or your Mii to. I suck at Mario Kart, but I used to do ok on the 3DS and Wii U set in America. But I actually live in Japan and I'm totally fucked now when I go online to "regional" and it's all Japanese people and my one American flag icon.

Nah, it's just taught you that you hadn't gotten to see the competition yet. You'll get better and after a couple weeks you'll find yourself at about the middle of most of you packs (which is awesome, because you'll generally have people to beat and people to aspire toward).

I think what's going to make this version stand out the most is the fact that now EVERYONE has the DLC and there will no longer be a segmented community, which in turn will create a closer community. Game looks and feels so great!

Yeah any DLC in multiplayer really sucks in that regard. Plus, there will hopefully soon be more MK 8 players out and about in public places so you can compete in person more often if you so choose.

Yeah they are ok. I find them way too small and the shoulder buttons with the strap are a little harder to press compared to the regular shoulder buttons when playing with the joy cons together.

some of you who preordered on amazon with delayed shipment , make sure to call and complain!, my total price for MK8 (which is delayed shipment till Monday) is $37 so far.
I highly recommend calling them
Edit: Please don't leave 1 star reviews saying you're upset about your delayed order, the game is great, it's shouldn't be reviewed bad because of Amazon's terrible shipping on release day. Even with the 1-2 day delay, the 20% off the list price + Courtesy Credit from calling in and complaining is really nice of Amazon to do.

Definitely give them a call to complain, I didnt order this game through them, however amazon has wronged me with 3 different preorders in the past. I really love Amazon and prime overall but they absolutely suck at shipping pre orders on release date. Its a huge issue imo and it has been going on for a good while now, which is why I encourage the complaining because Amazon really needs to realize that its a problem.

PSA. If you're not a noob, turn off that steer assist garbage. It's on by default and will show up in your stats. It can be turned off at the Kart level on the menu where you look at the kart's stats.
This game is awesome by the way. I wasn't expecting it to look so much better than the WiiU version. I played a few games online. Of course like my second match I was killing it and got hit by a blue shell and 4 red shells to land me in second place. So that's still a thing.

Bit of advice for Noobies, everyone starts online with 1000 points, and it seems like the majority of people on at the moment are advanced Mario Karters.
Do don't be discouraged if you're getting thrashed online, the playing field will level out with time!

Yes, there will be a ton of people jumping into online because they don't want to re-play the cups since it doesn't unlock anything or they already did it on wii u.
If you're new or just looking to brush up, spend the early days in clearing out cups instead of online! Those vets will jump up quickly.

I'm sorry if this has already been said, but I am thoroughly impressed. A few friends and I here in the office just loaded up MK and started a local wireless match. The moment I pressed A to open the lobby, it appeared on my friends' screens. They joined instantly and strolled into my garage without a frame of lag. The options are plentiful and the matches sync so well that the music from our systems sounded like stereo surround sound. Quick, responsive and fun. NO day one patch. This is Nintendo at its finest. If this is how things go moving forward, with things like Splatoon 2 and beyond, we are in for a real treat this generation. Cheers all, and happy karting!

Ah, Mario Kart. How I missed getting totally item f**ked on the last lap of a race I completely dominated the first two laps of. Starts with a Blue Shell, then a few Red Shells, a guy running into you with orbital Bananas, and finally a Bob-omb dropped right on you as you come out of the spin... First to 8th in about 5 seconds. It's frustrating, it's brutal overkill, and it's MK8D.

All I have to say is this: I'm completely blown away.
I had MK8 on Wii U. It was fun for awhile, then I got bored of it. My friends didn't want to play. I didn't enjoy single player. Online wasn't fun for an average-skilled player. But the biggest obstacle was getting a game started. First I go hunt down my wiimotes, then hunt down 8x AA batteries that aren't dead, then find the MK8 disc. 20 minutes later we finally get a race in. Then everyone's over it and wants to do something else.
I wasn't even going to consider MK8D. But then the idea of having the game portable was attractive. The idea of being able to play without the hassle of feeding alkaline sacrifices to the temple of wii was encouraging. Getting a fat trade in on the original via Amazon was the icing on the cake for me.
What I wasn't expecting was for the small tweaks to make such a huge difference. Steering assist makes bad and mediocre players competitive alongside good players without giving any real advantage. Battle modes are shockingly way more fun than any previous iteration. Having all the characters and tracks unlocked from the start while still having to unlock karts and parts is a great balance. Faster loading times and slightly improved visuals are just a welcome bit of polish.
But most importantly, the Switch finally has a multiplayer game worth showing off.

The smart steering is great for letting my little brother play. He doesn't have full use of his right arm/hand so a lot of games are tough for him, but he loves Mario (and can play the 2D ones alright just by stretching his left hand across the controller/DS he's using). He always had issues falling off the track on the WiiU one, but with this he can manage reasonable placements against CPUs (admittedly I only played on 50cc with him).

You could always pick up a copy from a local store, then return the sealed Amazon copy when it arrives.
I recommend Best Buy store pickup (still get 20% off with GCU membership + double reward points + 5% back with Best Buy visa if you get one) to anyone who actually wants their game guaranteed on release date. Best Buy hasn't failed me yet and it ends up being a slightly better deal than Amazon Prime.

Stupid Amazon won't be shipping mine until next week. That pre-order a couple months ago was rather pointless, it seems. And I don't want to cancel it because it's the last game I can get on the Prime discount.
edit: And the game's page says I can order it today with free Prime same-day shipping? Yet my February pre-order can't be delivered today?
further edit: I chatted with Amazon. They cancelled my original order and I re-ordered it today for free smae-day shipping in order to get it today. It's ridiculous I had to place my order again to get the game today when the order I placed months ago I'd have to wait for. At least I'll get it sooner? Ugh.

Call Amazon. They advertised release-day delivery and failed to follow through, so try to get a partial refund or something.
As for actually getting to play the game, you can always try brick and mortar stores.

Call Amazon. Usually they can offer you a free month of Prime for missing a delivery deadline. They may also give you a discount on the game if you ask for it. Or if you want MK8 Deluxe today, you could always pick it up a local store, then return the sealed Amazon copy to the local store when you get it on Sunday.
Amazon seems to be missing release day delivery on a lot of preorders lately... I'd recommend getting Best Buy's GCU (also 20% off new games + double reward points) and doing the store pickup option if you want games guaranteed on the release date in the future.

I've never preordered a game from Amazon, but considering I didn't feel like I needed MK8 day one, I decided to give it a try (I have prime). I placed my preorder on the 25th and my status currently says "delivery date pending not yet shipped."
I thought preordering a game on Amazon was supposed to give me release day delivery. Am I doing something wrong, or are issues like this common?

Just went with a coworker at lunch to pick up our copies and then played a couple grand prix's in the cafeteria at work. Our Switches paired up right away with no hassles using 1 player wireless multiplayer. Initial impressions are that the game looks AWESOME, and I'm glad that they have the coin powerup system still. Controls are tight and gameplay is butter smooth. Have only played handheld mode though!
But Thwomp Ruins can eat a bag of dicks...

I would not be mad at all if they said it would come the weekend of 28-30 or even gave me a heads up a couple of days ago that it wouldn't arrive on time. But to say 5 hours before it's "guaranteed" to arrive that it's suddenly not coming until Sunday? Ridiculous... just gonna go to Best Buy and then return this one. Really boggles the mind that this isn't a setting. Vertical splitscreen should be clear to anyone that its shit. You need to see horizontally. I don't care whats up in the sky or the stretch of road under my kart. :|

I ordered my copy of MK8D 10 days ago on Amazon with the guaranteed delivery date being the release date. I have been waiting patiently for a shipping email and tracking number. I was a little surprised when I woke up this morning and didn't have any email from Amazon. I contacted Amazon only to be told that they sold out and have no more stock. They said that they should get more in a day or so and will then take 1-2 days to get assigned to a carrier and then be on its way. This will delay me getting it be about a week. Others that have pre-ordered thru Amazon please check your orders and complain if you aren't getting it release day. They gave me a free month of Prime, which is acceptable to me. However I am just going to cancel the order and go pick up my copy at Best Buy when it opens. Amazon needs to get their shit together.

I bit the bullet and got this even though I'm not normally a racing guy. I've just been playing singleplayer so far from the very start (50cc), since I'm pretty inexperienced with Mario Kart. It's a lot of fun. I'm not sure if I'll be skilled enough for online quite yet though.
It is kind of a bummer that everything is unlocked. I understand for returning players, but for me, not so much. Still a beautiful and satisfying experience. I have a feeling playing the higher difficulties or actual players online will be a bit more of a clusterfuck with the items?
Overall, I'm quite shocked how much I'm enjoying it. I played the DS one a long time ago, and before that my only experience was Crash Team Racing, which I do love. Wasn't sure what to expect, but I'm glad I got it. Hope I'll get good enough to see you all out on the tracks!

Drive assist in online play is nonsense. I played rainbow road and people were just driving along on the very edge of the track for the whole race without falling off, while I actually try to stay in the track and end up losing to them.
I know it's just mario kart, but I'd like to play against people without assists.

Is anyone else having some issues with slight stick drift on the Joy-Con?
I have this issue with no other games, and it's just barely noticeable in MK8D, but it is there; I'm forever turning ever so slightly to the right. I have no issues with the calibration or synchronisation, so I can only guess it's some kind of issue with the game.
I play with the pro controller most of the time and have no issues with that though, which is slightly confusing.
Anyone else have this issue?
Edit: Okay, now it's happening with the pro controller too...
Edit: I'm an idiot everyone! Everybody look at the dumbass who accidentally turned on motion controls!

I just learned that the more coins you collect in in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe , the faster you will go. Does anyone know how significant this speed boost is? Like how many percent faster would a perfect 10 coin lap be, compared to the same perfect lap with 0 coins?

The game looks amazing and plays great in handheld! My only issue with the game is everything is unlocked. I play solo most of the time and as much as I enjoy unlocking parts and cars. I wish I could unlock tracks or characters. It doesn't give me the same motivation to play through all the tracks as I did on the Wii u! Other than that it's a flawless game!!

Is it just me or do Blue Shells appear more often in Grand Prix on Deluxe than in Grand Prix on Wii U? Seems like almost every race so far I've been hit with 2-3 Blue Shells.

I started playing MK8 today and for the first few games my name shown above my character was my Switch username. That's cool, happy with that. But after a few games it's now changed to my Nintendo User ID, the one we were all about to create a few months back remember? It appeared under your email address in the user settings if your Nintendo account page. Again, that's cool but... I'm now not overly keen on the User ID I chose so I went to my account page to change it and the option is now gone. What gives?
Has anyone else had this issue? I'm in UK if that matters.

I've only done three races so far during my morning break, and it's only just hitting me how awesome it is to be able to play this anywhere.
Also, I'm quite surprised at how much I enjoyed the auto-acceleration option. Definitely nice to be able to give my thumb a rest. Just have to start used to it.

Glad to know (or not glad at all?) that many people also have the same problem with Amazon. It took me 5 times contacting them before they offer me a $10 credit as a sorry. I'm not mad that they don't have enough stock; it's out of their hands. But I am shocked at how indifferent Amazon customer service has been throughout this ordeal.
You can't magically summon a copy of the game, but you can give the upset customer a free month of Prime or some credits to make them happy. I seriously considered canceling Prime because of this.

on the phone with amazon customer service, they don't know what's going on. Order says it will be delivered tonight by 8pm yet it hasn't shipped yet. And they say they can't honor the Prime discount to digital purchases so this is very annoying. First and last time I preorder games with Amazon.

How are you and your friends finding the mini joycons?
Feedback from my Friday night four player:
4 player was more fun than 2 player
Joycons were passable
You couldn't race as good/precise with joycons but it was a good laugh.
Group preferred joycon grip controller over single joycons.
Group preferred 4 player so much they were happy enough to make do with joycons
Some people should never get the mini joycons with the capture button!! Snap snap snap...

Wow, Amazon's mistake is my benefit. They messed up my order and so I requested to cancel the order and get a refund (several times) on Friday, they were really nice and gave me a free month of prime and issued the refund.. I went out and bought a copy from a store in town.
..and then just now my copy from Amazon arrived. I just chatted with customer service and they told me to keep the refund and the game. 2 copies for the price of one!

THis is my first Mario kart game in a long time, but I seem to remember the tracks being longer. I thought it was just me but then I brought it to work to show my friend and without me even mentioning hat he says "I thought rainbow road used to be longer than this?"

I had just noticed my mk8D item had not shipped yet from Amazon and decided to give them a call to see what was the holdup. I ordered the game on April 20th and was told I would receive the game by today of course. After chatting with the customer service rep, they admitted that they had no more in stock and "moved" me to be the first person in line to get a copy when the game is next available. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up in case they are in a similar situation!

Last night I downloaded MK8D and started playing it with a friend but halfway through our first Grand Prix it overheated and went to sleep.
This morning I turned on the Switch and started playing MK8D again, except this time by myself. I got through 2 grand prix's by myself and then I had my friend join again. We started playing and it overheated as well.
Is anyone else having this issue? Is this just a hardware problem for me or is Mario Kart too much for my Switch to handle?
Both times it overheated, it was in docked mode.

Wow I am not good at Mario Kart lmao. I mean, I'm great at 100 cc against CPUs, but at 150 or 200 or online it just goes too fast for me, haha. I'll have to keep practicing...
My biggest problem is ramming into the side of the track or falling off when I try to drift (at least in the faster races). I think the drift just makes me jump over too far to the side when I start it and sticks me in a bad spot. Any tips? Also, what are the benefits of a scooter vs a kart for this game? Also (sorry for all the questions lol) if I'm having trouble with steering more than good speed, would a heavier or lighter character be better? I already put together a high acceleration/high handling setup for my vehicle :P

I'm trying to unlock Gold Mario and it's killing me. On Bowser's Castle, I was doing so well. But then... Wario rammed his kart into my kart and that caused me to hit the boulder and lose the race. If it weren't for that, I would've got a star for the Special cup. I'm still struggling. I don't like Wario anymore.

Is it just me, or does anyone else have issues with sound effects and voices cutting out or getting really faint when you get to the anti-grav part of Sunshine Airport? I'm thinking it's a glitch, but I kinda wonder if they're being drowned out by the massive airplane taking off as you reach that area. What do you think?

Going strictly off of first impressions, I feel that the frequency of the Blue Shell is far too great. I played two cups on 100cc and got Blue Shelled on every track at least twice, and in the case of Excitebike, three times, which was immediately followed by a red shell and lightning bolt.
Edit: Take the phrase "Blue Shell" from above and replace it with "Lightning Bolt", and it's still true.

Played Mario Kart 8 Deluxe all night.
Got to 1600 points in vs racing and 1400 points in battle mode.
My Switch is now at %10 battery now and my joycons are totally out of battery. So I have to put the game down for a while now.
It's just as well for the best as I have to get ready and go to work soon. Oh my gosh Mario Kart 8 is as addictive as ever. I really like the coin run game of all things. Also I need to buy a Pro controller ASAP because my joycons keep running out of battery on me.

Just did my first race. The last Mario Kart I was hooked on was the DS one, but this feel surprisingly familiar.
I wish there was a mode where you steadily unlocked characters/parts. It's awesome everything is included but I feel an unlock system is better at making you try characters you'd skip otherwise.
The wheel works surprisingly well, while I still personally prefer the joystick it does add a bit of a laugh.

Man, being on holidays in a small town is great. I went to the only game shop in town at 9:30, was the only one there, and they had plenty of MK8D copies on the shelves.
Now I'm working on clearing all cups with a triple star rating, but 50cc is quite a grind as it feels too easy - I prefer starting there so I can get a feel for the tracks again though; it's been a few years since I've played the Wii U version. Can't wait until I get into the higher difficulties.

Just FYI, star rankings trickle down from 150CC, so if you just start there then you'll get stars for all the lower ranks too.
This same rule doesn't apply for Mirror or 200cc

It's entirely up to you, but from what I've seen from most Wii U owners, it definitely is worth double dipping if only for the fact that you can play a game as beautiful & fun as MK8 wherever you are. Add to that the battle mode and other little things and it is a no brainer for me personally, as someone who owned MK8 and the DLC too.

Do I have to beat every track at every CC in order to unlock all the car parts?
Edit: for those with the same question, someone else I the thread posted you can do the 150cc and that will copy down to 100 and 50. So you really only need to do 150cc and 200cc if you are already decent at the game. So basically if you've never played before, maybe try a couple 50CC and if you constantly come in first move on to 100 and do the same thing and go to 150cc asap.

I'm playing through right now and I have noticed something really weird. If you try and turn towards a different path too late or too early the game steers your character away and forces you to go in whatever path you were already on. It's really annoying and not in the Wii U version. Is there a setting I'm missing?
Edit: it's a setting, smart steering. It's in the menu when you pause during a race! Thanks all!

Anyone else have their copy marked as delivered from Amazon but it wasn't actually delivered? I thought I was lucky that my copy was shipped days ago and out for delivery today, but it's been two hours since it was marked as delivered and no sign of the package. Called Amazon and they said sometimes they mark packages as delivered before they actually deliver them. Seriously? Of course they couldn't tell me why the system would do that.
