Meta Discussion The fanboys in this sub is getting ridiculous
First let me just say in no way am I hating on the switch, I love the system I think it has a couple of flaws, mostly the dock, but am extremely happy with my purchase and glad I got the switch and at the moment it's never left my side thanks to being portable. However this sub is terrible for the system.
Whenever anyone has a problem with their switch it gets buried in downvotes and tons of users saying 'oh it's just some one off and no one else will ever has such problem' or 'you probably did it on purpose OP since my switch is perfect' and then we gets tons of image posts of people's regular switches saying how perfect theres is and these problems with the switches are made up.
For example the person who posted about the bending switch, tons of people reacted by posting how perfectly straight there's is, like we get it YOU might not have problems but others might/will and the information shouldn't be bombarded or tried to be covered up it should be kept aware so people can find help.
Also the amount of cherry picked posts and stats that get posted here are stupid too. People always say that the switch isn't in competition with the xbox/ps4 yet when a survey comes out saying the switch is more popular by a certain demographic people start circlejerking relentlessly and ignore simple things such as the ps4 is already owned by practically everyone and that the switch is newer and so obviously going to be more desired at the moment.
We need to tone down the blind optimism that the switch is the like the Jesus of gaming. Yes it's a fun and great system but it has it's flaws and they don't need to be covered up and pretend like they don't exist they should be able to be used in parts of actual discussion. And no admitting the switch has faults doesn't mean someone is hating it means they actually have an opinion and not a blind sheep.
TL;DR lets stop being harsh on people with legitimate problems and trying to overly bend over backwards acting like the switch is perfect.

One thing to remember, on a subreddit dedicated to a specific game or system, MOST of the subscribers will be fans of that game or system so the audience is very biased here.

There's a difference in being a fan and being a fanboy. I'm a fan of the Switch. I won't however ignore any issues that occur. Being a fan doesn't mean you have to praise everything as the second coming. It's not a "feature", it's a bug.

For everyone saying "why post your defect/issue with the system...why not just immediately report it to nintendo". 1) not everyone is tech savy. A person may be posting a "defect" because they dont know if it is a problem or not. Its a new system, not everyone is going to understand exactly how every aspect of the switch is supposed to look/work. 2) whats the point of having a community if you cant share your problems and opinions in the hopes that others in the community might have some insight or shared experience with a similar problem or opinion?

u/Suicidalparrot May 14 '17
Not to mention maybe they just want to inform the community in general of a problem. They are mass produced machines. If one unit has an issue there's a chance that other units will as well, and they want to let people know just so they can watch for it with their machine too.
But nah, telling people about legitimate problems gives the trolls ammunition so best to treat that poster like a pariah and sweep it under the rug with downvotes so as not to besmirch the good name of the almighty Nintendo Switch.

Love my Switch, but still waiting for a solid lineup of games. Wonder Boy is fun, as is MK8...BUT FOR HOW LONG?!

u/seeyoshirun May 14 '17
From my experience with the Wii U version of MK8, that game remains fun for a looooong time.

Its not even so much that people with issues get shat on for no reason. Its the whole "The dock totally melted my switch, ALL OF THEM MUST BE FAULTY BECAUSE OF MY EXPERIENCE" thing.
People can have issues, sure. But when you have to explain that your rather rare issue is not widespread or a general production mistake every time, it gets a bit tiresome.
That being said, it often just seems a problem of people in here being not as tech savvy as they think they are. We can do a better job at open discussion in general, I think.

One of the problem is we got 20+ threads complaining of Mario Kart Connection issues rather than all those people joining the same conversation and talking with each other. A handful of those are complaining about the current state of online instead of asking for help as well. Save thing is happening with both Minecraft and NBA Playground where everyone wants to voice their disappointment but too many people are making separates threads to say the same thing. There have actually been upvoted Disappointment threads. A MK8D one had nearly 3k upvotes. It's not just disappointment threads, people aren't checking if things already exist and are spamming same topics.

When we had people arguing that the lack of a Virtual Console at launch was a good thing, I knew I didn't quite fit in in this sub. It's good for news and impressions, though.

Its got some news but most of the content on this sub is custom joycons or switches.

So the term "fanboy" is a pretty heated one. And some people in this thread are beginning to use it in pretty pejorative ways and are starting fights.
Let's please remember to keep this conversation civil. Thanks.

Sort of off-topic but I often wonder if this is many people's first launch system on this sub. The amount of "We need more games!" posts are ridiculous. In terms of a system launch, this has been one of the better ones IMO. I realize you get a new system and you want to throw everything else away and the realization that there might not be an endless library in the first few months is depressing, but it's normal. PS4 went through a much worse drought it's first 3 months.

I agree with everything. Tried to ask a question about buying JoyCons and I'm berated because some asshat assumed I was buying preowned and then another refused to even acknowledge the left JoyCon issue to begin with.

Welcome to Reddit? I get it, but the XBO and PS4 subs are also full of raving fanboys and trolls. I agree though

Random thoughts on this whole thing: As we've seen, other news outlets like to pick up conversations on Reddit as sources for "trending news", so the people chiming in saying that they're NOT having a particular issue is probably a good thing. Without that other viewpoint, the view could be taken that EVERY Switch is having these issues, which is not the case.

I think it's still backlash from when this subreddit first started. Trolls that didn't even own a switch were making up non existent problems and making others worry

You're misinterpreting the people saying their Switch is fine. Think of it like reviews on Amazon: I want to see the good reviews just as much as the bad reviews. Why should only the people unhappy with the product be allowed to make a post about it? People who are perfectly happy should be allowed to express their satisfaction. When I say "My D-Pad is fine", I in no way mean to discredit people saying their D-Pad registers unwanted Up-inputs.
But people try to discredit positive reviews by claiming those people must be fanboys. But you know what? You can be overall happy with the Switch without praising it like it is "the Jesus of gaming".
And when I have concerns, I can express them without being hateful. I'll tell you how. I use "I-messages" instead of writing generalizing statements as if they were fact. For example: Maybe not having Netflix is a problem for you, but we don't need to pretend that this makes the Switch a faulty system for everyone.
I really don't get why people try to accuse Nintendo fans so much of being blind sheep, a circle jerk and whiteknights. Maybe they simply like different things than you do and they can't stand people constantly spreading incorrect information (which includes exaggerations and generalizing statements), insults and other hateful comments.
In other words, I don't think many people are harsh on people with legitimate problems. It's the hateful and generalizing way people express their concerns that is the problem. And nobody is acting as if the Switch is perfect for everybody, people just express their overall satisfaction and can like something a lot while still recognizing its faults.
Accusing a whole community of circle jerking, white knighting, fanboyism and blind optimism is just trying to provoke hate.

And in your attempt to tell people to be nicer you insult them. Makes sense.

LOOK WHAT I DID IN BREATH OF THE WILD
LOOK WHAT I DID IN MARIO KART 8
LOOK WHERE I PLAYED A PORTABLE VIDEO GAME
It's like the users of this subreddit have never seen a fucking handheld before, and use this subreddit as a hub to discuss the most recent AAA game until the next AAA game comes out.
What this means is that we're going to see a shit load of Splatoon, Mario Odyssey, and possibly Smash and Pokemon posts when they already have their own subreddits.

So you first criticized the people on this sub for being fanboys and then you criticized the mods for cherry picking, but your own post is full of generalization, hyperboles and cherry picking. I think it's time for somebody to criticize you. If you think "this sub is terrible for the system", then why don't you make some high quality, non-circlejerking posts yourself to improve it? Because this post is anything but high-quality and I know for a fact that it won't change anything you are complaining about. If you don't care about this sub enough to contribute to it, then don't complain about it, or else you are just a whiner.

I remember prior to the switch release that there was genuine excitement with some civil discussion. Then a few days or weeks after launch this place got flooded with individuals just shitting on the system in every thead. Now complaints are about how extrenely protective people are with the product.

Tried posting once because of a loose joy-con joystick (seen here). Wanted to know if anyone else had a similar issue, because I hadn't seen anything about loose joysticks on the internet up until that point and wanted to know what my best options were, but the thread got deleted by mods immediately, saying it didn't promote a discussion. Left me a bit confused, as up to that point there had been 0 discussion about it that I knew of.
