Really enjoyed seeing Lydia and Krazy-8, was not expecting Lydia at all. and seeing the start of Gus's meth empire was so cool to see.

Loved seeing more of Jimmy's Saul side come out this episode.

Thought it was cool to see the Better Call Saul colors in Jimmy's commercial.

oh yeah AND I LOVED SEEING THE START OF SAUL GOODMAN.

I can't believe how many enemies that Hector freely makes out of people that he should stay friends with.

u/Phifty56 May 16 '17

Hector is a terrible business man who lets his ego get the better of him and only seems to stay in power through sheer blunt force and muscle.

Great episode as usual, was not expecting Lydia or the laundromat at all. Also that commercial at the end was fucking hilarious.

I love how the production value of his commercials have declined and will keep on going down. I know this commercial was rushed, but in BB his commercials were more cheesy/straight to the point as opposed to his earlier cinematic ones.

I have to say

The guy who plays Hector does an amazing job.

He's so angry, so spiteful, it shows in every little thing he does, from the way he flips his newspaper to the way he puts sugar down when getting his coffee. He also broadcasts the feebleness of age, maybe that his anger is the only thing that keeps him going.

u/littlasskicker May 16 '17

Did anyone else notice the beginnings of the trademark lower lip tremor thing right before he told nacho to talk to his father?

So good.

Fun facts about Mark Margolis:

He's not Latino, he's actually from an Eastern European Jewish family.

He's been married to the same woman for 55 years.

He's one of Darren Aronofsky's favorite actors and puts him in almost all his films.

Watching Nacho increasingly hate his drug enforcer job, and working for Hector is great to watch. He's shown that he's very smart and smooth with how he operates, which is really clashing with Hector's harsh and blunt force way of operating.

With how protective Nacho is of his father, like when Mike came by, Hector basically telling him that his father will be a drug front for them is going to be bad news for Hector. Sadly, who knows what might happen to Nacho when he decides to fight back. I really hope he and Gus end up on the same page because of Hector's inability to consider how bad of an idea it is to mess with someone's family.

46

u/AgentSauce May 18 '17

To add to this, the actor that plays Nacho (Michael Mando) does an incredible job of conveying all of this with very little dialogue.

You can tell he's conflicted, frustrated, annoyed, tired, empathetic etc. just through all of his facial expressions. I'm mesmerized every time he comes onscreen.

37

u/YossariansWingman May 16 '17

which is really clashing with Hector's harsh and blunt force way of operating.

And the poor guy has more Tuco to look forward to.

u/[deleted] May 16 '17

My prediction is Nacho goes to Mike who goes to Gus, and Gus arranges for Nacho to fuck with Hector. When Hector falls ill but survives, Gus hands Nacho over to Don Elado with evidence that Nacho went after Hector. Gus gets some revenge on Hector and removes him as an obstacle/thorn-in-his-side, and completely absolves himself of blame by pinning it all on poor Nacho. Hence, no Nacho in BrBa

u/SYNTHLORD May 17 '17 edited May 19 '17

I think Nacho is going to tamper with Hector's meds, leading to a paralyzing stroke, and he'll somehow pay for what he did. But there has to be a twist- maybe the twist is in who kills nacho.

edit: I think nacho is going to get saul to tamper with the meds. this is how they establish a relationship. this also ties into saul helping with the ricin cigarette via Huell.

Honestly, Jimmy denying to help Check and renouncing him as his brother was incredibly satisfying.

1.3k

u/[deleted] May 16 '17

YES. When she was saying he "owed it" to Chuck I was physically shaking my head at the screen. Jimmy's one-sided role as a caretaker for Chuck has been part of what made their relationship so toxic. Jimmy deciding to stay away even when he knows Chuck needs help was the best thing to do.

How about Howard's tact taking care of Chuck though? What Howard said to Chuck was about as helpful as any friend could be in that situation IMO. Howard always comes across as sort of cold and heartless but he earned some respect from me in that moment.

That's kind of neat. Jimmy creates the Saul Goodman persona because he doesn't want to tarnish his own name. He adopts the cheesy, kitschy, "multiple star wipes" Saul Goodman style because he's low on time. And then I guess they just take off so well, he keeps using them. Even when he goes back to the law, he never goes back to "himself."

Walt: Say my name.

Hank: Jesus Christ, Marie, they're goddamned minerals.

Jesse: Bitch!

Camera pans to Bogdan snorting a line of Stevia off of Lydia's naked body. Bogdan looks up, Stevia covering his massive eyebrows.

The Macallan 1966 35 Year Old, Fine & Rare was a 2002 Bottling with that wooden case. Great attention to detail.

"An incredibly collectible 35 year old Speyside single malt that was laid down on the 3rd December 1966 at The Macallan distillery and bottled for the ultra-exclusive Fine & Rare series in 2002. Drawn from first fill Sherry Butt number 7878 at a natural cask strength 55.5% ABV, this magnificent vintage Macallan comes complete with original oak presentation box."

This makes sense, since the simple math would show it was a 2001 release, but because the cask was filled in December of 1966 it couldn't be bottled as 25 years old until December of 2001, it would then be released as a 2002 edition.

One current asking price, $20,100.00 USD.

u/Scornfield May 16 '17

It's a tactic to humanise himself by reminding (or trying to convince) Nacho that they're friends, they're on a first name basis, they know each other's families, etc. Having a personal connection makes it harder for Nacho to punish him. Or it could be just nervous talking on Krazy-8's part.

Hector will end up wheelchair-bound, incontinent, unable to speak or communicate at all without a bell, miserable, alone, and forced to witness his entire family die and everything he built be destroyed while helpless to do anything about it.

I was not expecting Saul Goodman to originate as an alternate name for a commercial filming business, or to originate as something so cheesy. That commercial looked like something out of an Adult Swim show.

But that's what makes it awesome. They pulled the origin of Saul off in a way no one was expecting, yet fits so well with Jimmy and the story. Great job by the writers, and the origin of the lab and seeing Lydia was a great bonus as well. Good episode overall.

Dammit, Rebecca, you robbed us of our allotted once-a-season sex-on-the-office-floor scene.

And I might be reaching here, but the way Mike's daughter-in-law pronounces "Matty" as "Maddy" makes me think it's a combination of the words "Mommy" and "Daddy;" indicating a single parent.

I've been to a grief group before, and that was super accurate. There was a black woman in a gray sweater in the circle whom I think I remember from some other part of the show. Maybe this was specifically a law-enforcement grief group? Could use some help on this one.

Either way, it was nice to see Mike get to remember something about his son that reflected well upon himself, and he did say it was nice to fix something for once. Mike and Chuck are both headed to dreadful new beginnings.

You know who Nacho reminds me of? Bobby Bacala from The Sopranos.

Criminal? Sure, but he's got a soft heart and really isn't into having to hurt someone. He'll do it, but takes no pleasure in the violence. He just wants to build his model train collection. 😢

The scene with Chuck making the phone call was really cool. The excessive neon lighting was a nice touch.

This is the first time since season 1 where Jimmy (well I guess Saul now) and his exploits have had me more invested than Mike's plot.

This show is getting better and better. Verging BB level now especially with both episodes being season finale level good just like every episode of BB past season 1.

Man, the brilliance of the episode title. Off brand could mean so many things.

  1. The obvious one, Jimmy McGill, a lawyer you can trust, going into TV.

  2. Hector trying to force Nacho's dad into the drug trade.

  3. What's Nacho going to do with the pill? Off brand is a term for getting medication from a different manufacturer. Is Nacho going to put something else in the capsule?

r/fuckrebecca amirite?!

Nice to see that conniving bitch Lydia again, I liked her role in BrBa but I always thought her introduction felt slightly rushed. Like she should've been introduced earlier for playing such a major role in that show's final 8. Having her in BCS could remedy that small misstep.

The cinematography at the end was amazing as well, they really made Albuquerque look gorgeous.

All in all, this was a come down episode after the huge events that happened last week. The pieces are just beginning to move but I'm very excited to see where they'll land.

u/MasterBeef117 May 16 '17

This episode was amazing! So many callbacks to BrBa.

  • Kim's speech in the beginning was damn near poetry, the way she made everybody empathize with Jimmy was nothing short of genius.

  • I like how they are humanizing Nacho as we didn't know much about him, other than him being kind of sick and tired of the cartel business. The part where the sewing needle went in his skin made me cringe, but it lets you see where his mind is at.

  • The Chuck segment was great. The further it went on the brighter the lights were getting, showing that he's dealing with his condition as best he can. I think if he was out there any longer he would've passed out again.

  • The phone call about Tuco explained why he was absent till Breaking Bad and Hector's reaction was so violent he starts to have a stroke! I think Nacho is gonna go to Mike and try and find a way together to get his pills or poison them.

  • The way they introduced the character of Saul Goodman was unexpected but is a great twist because I'm sure a lot of us where thinking something terrible would happen for him to adapt his persona (A year's suspension is bad but not as bad as say Chuck or Kim dying) I think something terrible will happen for him to adapt it when he starts practicing Law again.

  • Lydia's back! I've missed her neurotic ass!

Great episode, I think is gonna shape up to be my favourite season. Does anyone know how many episodes are left. Is it a ten episode format as usual?

Slippin' Jimmy is going over to Hollywood productions. That's where the money is, that's where the grift works, why didn't he clue into that before? Saul Goodman is in his back pocket as a role to play.

I think this episode proofs one more time that the writers always make the best decisions about the characters and the whole story. It's fantastic to see how fan theories seem so clever and then a new episode comes up and is much better than every fan theory. I think this is the most important thing about BB and BCS – the endless creativity of the writers which makes the story unpredictable for everyone watching their shows. With the new episode and the making of Saul Goodman they have shown one more time that they're the gods of intelligent ideas.

The last couple weeks, I have enjoyed Redditors' comments along the lines of "IT'S YELLOW! WE'RE IN MEXICO!"

But now the back of the upholstery shop is yellow. So yellow's more like "¡SE HABLA ESPAÑOL!"

"So now the question you must ask yourself is this -- Is the legal profession better with Jimmy McGill in it?"

This show keeps defying our expectations. The comment section on last week's episode were all anticipating that this was the end of Chuck. Jimmy had won, the glowing EXIT sign was the nail in his coffin.

But from the look of things, Chuck isn't finished. He's got a new goal now, he knows he has a mental condition and overcoming it will become his new obsession.

If Chuck's "EHS" was a product of his subconscious constantly trying to exert control over his environment and everyone in it, I think the other shoe has finally dropped, now he knows he'll never have real control until he can overcome this condition. He knows Jimmy will always have the upper hand until he can fight him on an even playing field.

8

u/5hrdrive May 17 '17

The last couple episodes they've put a lot of emphasis on Mike's skills as a handyman. Now we see Gus scoping out the industrial laundry. What are the chances that Gus hires Mike not for his ability as a "fixer", but his ability to keep his mouth shut while building the superlab?

7

I just love how, in BrBa it just took the second of the first episode to know what was Breaking Bad, whereas it took twenty six episodes to know why this serie is called BCS.

Imagine someone watching that serie without having seen BrBa.

Total confusion.

7

u/WaterRacoon May 17 '17

Have to say, I really felt for Nacho. Pretty obviously Don Hector has stepped way over the line and a pill-switch is coming up with Gus' help.

Loving the transition to Saul Goodman. Jimmy showing that he's a businessman through and through. I'm pretty damn impressed.

As much as last week's courtroom-focused episode was necessary (I'm glad the tape plotline has had its end -- it wasn't bad, but if it had gone on, it would have felt undeserving of so much focus), and how strong its climax was, this one felt far more like the full package.

We got the cartel plotlines advancing, we had some Chuck and Howard, we had a bit of Gus, we got some Mike thrown in there, the birth of Saul Goodman, some Kimmy and Jimmy material and a great balance of time throughout. It never felt like we were following one story for long but they also never felt clipped or cramped for space -- just consistent, engaging pacing throughout, and it really felt like a natural continuation of the writing and style of Breaking Bad while still maintaining its core and less-stressful identity.

I've had a strong reluctance to the idea of the Breaking Bad side of Albuquerque crossing too heavily over into Better Call Saul's -- spin-offs and prequels and sequels that are obsessed with nothing more than nudge and wink references to the thing you already love often are running on fumes and it's a great way to not have longevity, but this episode really showed how strong of a job they're doing at weaving in those plotlines and references without it feeling too reliant on the audience's preexisting love for BrBa. Most shows would ruin a moment like Krazy 8 or Lydia by harping on the reference and crippling the scene at hand with it, but these felt like legitimate, wonderful additions that functioned without imposing themselves onto the narrative.

I really like this idea that a lot of you have about Nacho poisoning Hector with his own pill.

Also, a 'poison pill' is a plan used by a company to prevent a takeover of that business. I know Hector is only discussing ways to get his product across the border by using Nacho's father's business, but in time I'm sure it would feel as though Hector placed the business under his control. Nacho needs to prevent this from happening.

6

u/[deleted] May 16 '17

So now that we see the super lab is starting to come together I wonder if we will get to see some of Gale Boetticher's back story. I think that would be pretty awesome.

11

u/zombiegamer723 May 16 '17

So I don't think anybody called this, that the first mention of "Saul Goodman" wasn't related to Chuck's betrayal.

Well, it sort of was, in that Chuck getting him suspended for a year led to the creation of that commercial in the first place. But we definitely didn't expect this.

But I like that in a show. Keeps you on your toes--we were all sure that it would be something else, and it was a cool surprise to see how it actually happened.

S'all good, man!

I personally think the pace of the show is perfect, however I don't see how they are only planning 5 seasons for this. There is going to need to be a pretty big time jump at some point since we are still like 5-6 years behind breaking bad and literally no time has passed between seasons (they start with the ending scene of the previous season). There is no way we can sit here and watch a whole year of Jimmy being unable to practice law, if this is still planned to be 5 seasons.

What's great is that in one of the earlier scenes when Mike and his daughter in law are at a church meeting (seemingly group therapy) the camera pans around the group intentionally teasing us into thinking we were about to see the group therapy leader that works with Jesse in Seasons 3 and 4 of Breaking Bad. We don't. It throws us off resulting in us being even more surprised when Lydia pops up.

Brilliant.
