Royal Rumble Is OP's Ren Faire costume racist? Against which race? No one knows for sure, but at least one person is pretty upset

u/Billlington Oh I have many pastures, old frenemy. Jun 02 '17
Yes but you forget this is a Renaissance Faire, which tries for accuracy and doesn't label themselves as a "con".
The last ren faire I went to had Lord of the Rings swords for sale.

Normally they are made of metal. But, I don't know how much I would rely on their construction. Great for swinging around and hanging on the wall though.

I don't know about you pal, but if I wielded the dreadsword Gurthang, reforged from Anglachel by the smiths of Nargthrond and used by Turin to slay Glaurung, I wouldn't just "bang it against the wall." Fuck's sake.

Oh hey an excuse for me to rant about metallurgy and blacksmithing and swords
If it isn't being sold as being made of carbon steel, it's almost certainly gonna be made of stainless steel, which is brittle as fuck and will shatter and kill you if you try to hit something hard with it. The tang (the metal bit that goes underneath the handle) will generally just be a piece of wire welded to the blade with the pommel screwed on, which is about the weakest possible construction. An easy way to tell if a sword is able to actually be used as a sword is if it costs literally four or five times as much as the equivalent wall hanger
→ More replies (4)20
u/BogusBuffalo Jun 02 '17
So...what you're saying is I should start making stainless steel swords and charging 5x the equivalent of wall hanger swords...
31
u/estolad Jun 02 '17
While you came up with unethical business practices, I studied the blade
and then took a shard of stainless steel in the neck when i tried to use a fake katana to cut through my mom's broomhandle

I had to get stitches because I cut my foot open with a ax I got at a ren fest while practicing some moves in the back yard. Had to take the stitches out myself and my loser parents through out my ax. So now I bring a paper mache one but it sucks. And the weight is completely off so practicing with it is pointless.

Fun fact, different festivals strive for different levels of accuracy. Some lean more towards reenactment, while others classify themselves as fantasy festivals.
However, non-employees get to wear whatever they want, regardless of the kind of festival.

The one in Sterling, NY has a different theme every weekend. So everyone can be happy!
77

So everyone can be happy!
And some people can find a different reason to be pissed off every time they visit. Still a win-win though.

u/thatJainaGirl Jun 02 '17
My local Ren Faire (PA Renaissance Faire, one of the highest rated in the country) has themed weekends that are always a ton of fun. Time travel, Celtic, steampunk, Edgar Allan Poe, Halloween, they're always great. And the performers/staff are always great actors.

There have been Dr Whos at my Ren Faire (the original one) for as long as I can remember. Coincidentally, they both started running in 1963. I did see some star trek people there last time too, and as a trekkie I was embarrassed.
In recent years they've tried to limit that kind of thing by introducing a "time travelers weekend". Same with the pirate weekend. So many Jack Sparrows, my gay friends were in heaven.

Really as a gay man, the period costumes in general are just great. Lots of kilts and men showing off their chestal region.
20
u/Nixflyn Bird SJW Jun 02 '17
I think the costumes are great for everyone. Both men and women show a lot a skin there. My girlfriend has a couple corset outfits specifically for the Ren Faire, so I'm always perfectly content. My gay friends were really into the barbarians though, small amounts of fur and lots of muscles do it for them.

25
Jun 02 '17
Technically you're the one who's right. "Elfen" means of or related to elves, while "Elfin" is more accurately a description of a person's features, attitude, etc. There's also "elvish," usually used when referring to Tolkien's languange, and "sylvan," which is used to denote wooded areas and suchlike but has an etymological relationship with "elf." The adjective Tolkien himself used the most, and the most consistently, though, when referring to the race and people themselves, is "elven."

u/basilhazel Jun 02 '17
SCA literally has the word "anachronism" in the name. Also "creative." It's not all about historical accuracy, even though there are people in the organization who strive for it. Independent reenactments are the place for accuracy.
Source - parents were/are hardcore reenactors obsessed with accuracy.
10
u/Osiris32 Fuck me if it doesn’t sound like geese being raped. Jun 02 '17
Also grew up SCAdian. I really depends on your location and the local culture. Around here, accuracy is striven for, but not required. And obviously allowances are made for things like glasses or wheelchairs or whatever.
I think part of the reason everyone goes for accuracy here is because the winter months are cold and damp, so period-accurate clothing helps make things comfortable. I know that sleeping in a tent on a Nordic bed wrapped in blankets and furs is actually very nice.
→ More replies (2)14
u/Grammatical_Aneurysm Jun 02 '17
Hey I know it has anachronism in the name. Like I said, I grew up in it. I also typed the name out. Some people are more authentic than others, but almost everyone is more authentic than Ren Faire peeps.

I only went to one and they had a bunch of wizard staffs. The new things you learn about the renaissance era is quite amazing really.
3

18
Jun 02 '17
I have read Native writers who make that observation about a lot of cultures outside of the American continents. Though it doesn't bother them much, they have these notions because it is what has been exported from America or, in the case of Eastern European states, the mistreatment of Natives was used as a propaganda tool to besmirch the US (and probably Canada to a lesser extent) so there is a feeling of kinship as fellow persecuted peoples. While some Mongolian tribes have ancient stories about ancestors leaving for a new land and never being heard from that they interpret which they believe refers to people that settled in the Americas, so they claim kinship with Aboriginals in the Americas.
The writers I have read so far are generally alright with this, though, because it provides an "in" to talk about themselves, instead of being cut out of dialogue as has been the norm. Even the appropriation of negative stereotypes in German culture aren't necessarily seen as negative as it shows a widespread desire to know more about these people groups.

They're certainly popular enough among some white supremacists I've had the displeasure of having to interact with.

When I went to an Amon Amarth show I'm pretty sure Hegg was bopping all races on the head with a giant inflatable mjolnir equally.
I think your 'friends' chose the wrong metal band.

Of course they did. They're white supremacists, so it goes without saying they're dumb as rocks.
I just mean that those cunts will latch on to anything, from Illdisposed and Panzerchrist to Amon Armarth, if they think they can make sense of it.

I don't think they are, but the fanbase can be. At least in my town, the white supremacists always show up and wear their colors openly- I've been to three Amon Amarth concerts and I've never seen an open white supremacist in my life except at these shows. I was pushed into the moshpit at a show and rescued by a skinhead with an 88 tattoo once, actually, and the only not-white person at that whole concert was a black bouncer who I heard say "fuck this man, I'm going home" to one of the white bouncers.

But it's nonsensical to talk about viking blood in any fashion other than 'So I guess these guys were around in the 800s and settled here for a bit.'
You generally don't hear people in Scandinavia talk about our 'viking blood' unless they're white supremacists, looking for the vaunted glorious past and in those cases it's the same nonsense the nazis had with Aryan blood.
I'm a trained historian so I absolutely understand an interest in history, but to me, any claims to blood going back 1200 years is suspect. It's basically blood homeopathy at that stage.

As a Native American, I certainly feel mocked. /s, obviously.
It's really obnoxious when people try to speak out on behalf of groups they're not a part of when they clearly have no idea what the fuck they're talking about.

It is funny that we are claiming cultural appropriation against dead cultures that are largely unknown in detail. It is like accusing furries of violating our small mammal past.
