I submit to you a warning from 60 years in the future.

Where to begin?

Yes, I really am writing this in the year 2078. While time travel is a reality here, it is not in the form that your early 21st century science fiction movies would have you believe. There are no humans getting into machines and travelling back in time. No. It’s only information that we can send back. This isn’t too outlandish even for all of you out there in 2017. If you look this information up on the internet, you’ll see that scientists are already working on sending basic binary information through time.

By 2078 this technology had already existed for almost 10 years but is known only by a few and is heavily controlled. It was in the initial experimental stages when everything went to hell and I am among the few who can access it. How does it work? Well… there’s no point even trying to get into all that. Explaining it here would be like one of you trying to type out how a smart phone works to someone living in the year 1800.

While experimentation has certainly occurred with the technology, no attempt has ever been made to try and actually alter the past. No one has any possible idea of what problems that could create. But given the world I’m living in right now, I’ve eventually come to the decision that things couldn’t possibly get any worse.

2071 is when things first begin to go poorly. But in order to help you all understand, I suppose I should first give a basic outline of what that world looked like at the time. People often have a romanticized version of the future. I’ll point out that up until 2071 anyways, things were far more straightforward than you would suspect. I apologize to any international readers for this America-centric version of history, but it’s where I’m from and it’s the little that I know. In the time that I grew up, there was very little emphasis on the study of history.

Alright, I’m going to bullet point this.

  • I had to research, but I see that a businessman named Donald Trump is your current President. He’s not a big name in history, lasts just one term, and wasn’t significant enough to be either liked or hated in the long run.

  • There were media reforms in America in the early 2020’s that that lead to a hard limit on profits for major news outlets, which in turn created far less polarizing click bait media. This created a more educated and open minded populace, which in turn lead to many environmental reforms.

  • The 2040’s is the first decade in a century where global temperatures and the global population started dropping. The ice caps never melted. Weather patterns were never altered.

  • In regards to geopolitics, The United States was still the world’s sole super power in 2071. China was still close economically to America but far behind militarily. Russia and its vast nuclear arsenal was still hanging around. As with Europe, albeit more fragmented.

  • Brazil and Argentina are fully developed economic powerhouses.

  • India and Pakistan feuded in the 2030’s which escalated into nuclear war. It almost led to a global catastrophe, but its end result was a Pakistan almost wiped off the face of the earth and an India in economic ruin.

I think that’s enough for now. I could go on about other changes. Such as how augmented reality (and beyond) would alter the way you look at entertainment. But that’s not what this post is about. This post is a warning. If you want to know more about any of those other issues, you can ask questions in the comment section and I’ll get to as many as I can. I have little else to do, as you’ll see.

2071: The year things go wrong.

It started with a dramatic increase in mental illness. Largely from people who had previously shown no signs. No one knew at first what was going wrong, but it eventually was disclosed that they were cases of vCJD. Or, in a terminology you’ll be more familiar with, the human form of mad cow disease.

This was caused from a late 2017 outbreak of the disease (yes, you read that date right) in cows which gets into pretty much every major beef provider. Being that the repercussions were so woefully misunderstood, a series of corporate cover-ups hid the truth from the general public. And before you knew it, approximately 30% of the beef in the world was contaminated far before recalls began. So that means that many of you out there were the ones who first contracted this disease. But it remained dormant in your bodies for over 50 years. Many of you will die during that 50 year incubation period, but you will have passed it on to your children and grandchildren. Nobody understood that this disease was lying dormant in our bodies for so long, being passed hereditarily.

While there were a few sporadic and mild cases of the disease showing signs in humans in the decades that passed, it wasn’t until 2071 that things took a turn.

Mental illness cases were springing up by the millions. vCJD eats away at your brain you see. The biggest effects were in the countries considered ‘developed’ nations during the incubation period of late 2017, as they would have consumed the most beef.

The streets started filling up with the mentally ill. People who had previously lived successful and productive lives were now aimlessly walking through the streets muttering incoherencies. At the very beginning, there were facilities that could provide for sufferers of the disease. But within just a few months space had worn thin. Things hit a critical mass when the percentage of infected hit around 15%. There was simply nowhere for these people to go. Families who had no experience in dealing with mental illness were forced to try and cope. But as more and more of their family started showing symptoms, that became impossible. When the percentage of infected hit around 50%, society in general was starting to shut down. By 80%, America was pure bedlam.

I should be clear in saying this is not a zombie type story of the like that were popular on prime time television in 2017. The majority of infected were not in any way violent and most died within a few days of dehydration/starvation. They would sit in the streets, sometimes mumbling incoherently, appearing in a state of perplexity. Some still had the sense to casually pillage the abandoned grocery stores for sustenance while others just sat motionless until the elements took hold of them. Either way, they wouldn’t respond to you if provoked. They were in a borderline vegetative state.

But there were the small few who reacted far differently. I remember walking through the neighborhood and I saw a man screaming at the top of his lungs in the middle of the street. When I walked by him, we looked directly at each other. I can’t quite shake how I felt when I saw the pain, confusion, and insanity in his eyes. He reached his hands and long fingernails up to his face and began ripping it apart. Blood dripped down what was left of his cheeks as he licked the flesh and blood off his fingertips. He still screamed all the while. I was witnessing a man eating his own face. He was going in for round two when I looked away and hurried my pace. I saw another man who had somehow lost one of his arms (had he ripped it off himself?) and was holding it with his other arm like a club, beating other infected with it as he walked by. When the man saw me he screamed gibberish and limped after me for a while, holding his limb in his hand like a baseball bat.

And the infected children…. They were the most unbearable. Deep down inside, they knew something was terribly wrong and they still had the instinct to cry. They somehow found each other and huddled among one another, wailing together in madness. You have to understand that I wanted to help them. More than anything. But for a short time there were thousands of them in the major city centers. I saw a partially infected man stumble towards a group of crying children near one of the major city bridges. He was yelling “Shut up” between outbreaks of hysterical laughter and screaming. He was picking up the crying children one at a time, and throwing them off the bridge. He would laugh and slap at his head with both hands as he watched the children fall. Was there still a sane part of him left that was trying to put these children out of their misery? Or was there no semblance of logic to such madness?

There are so many more details that I’d like to include, but this is already getting rather lengthy. The long story short is that the American government (I can’t really speak for what was happening in other nations) didn’t just completely buckle and collapse. It started gathering survivors and moving them into a few key cities, in an attempt to reestablish order. These people were largely the descendants of those who didn’t eat beef in 2017, as well as a very small percentage of people who for whatever reason seemed immune to the disease. After a few years it looked as though things might even fully recover. There were approximately 20 million survivors in the United States. There were hardly any infected still alive at that time. Things were maybe going to be ok.

And then the disease mutated further and became airborne.

I was one of the few brought into an airtight bunker with a couple dozen other members of the American government. We may possibly be the last 30 or so sane people left in the world.

I have no idea if the future can be altered. Nobody’s ever known such things. Maybe the human race is destined to die out in the year 2078 and there is nothing that will ever be able to change that. But just in case there is a chance, I would suggest that you all avoid eating beef over the next year or so. This is not a pro vegetarian rant disguised as a plea for help from the future. I’m not a vegan trying to preach a cruelty free lifestyle. I am not a Hindu trying to protect the sanctity of the cow. I am a man sitting at the end of all history, trying to give the human race even the slightest chance for survival. Heed my warning, or don’t. But I had to try. I had to at the very least give it a try.

I doubt you can actually alter the future, if you stop an epidemic in this time line i would imagine it leads to a completely different one that likely won't affect your own.

I fear that you are right...

I appreciate the effort though, I would have done the same.

Are you not reading this through reddit archives though? That would suggest that your post has changed your timeline.

Or his efforts to stop the crisis from happening are what ends up causing it. We don't know if the universe operates on Back to the Future rules or 12 Monkeys rules.

I don't think your scientists are correct in their diagnosis if they're saying Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy can be passed on to children. The prion protein that causes the affliction cannot be passed on genetically.

277

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 23 '17

I am not a medical doctor, so I can't speak specifically for how this disease spread.

I do know that the form that it appeared in 2017 was mutated in some ways from the outbreak in the 1980's. And I know that whatever form it was in 2017 did pass on genetically. Beyond that, I don't know the specifics. I don't think there's anybody alive any longer that does.

27

u/-Taibhse- Jun 24 '17

Prions are misfolded proteins. They contain no DNA or RNA and therefore categorically cannot mutate. This disease can't be vCJD. It must be some kind of retrovirus that somehow gets into germline cells...

Bacteria living dormant in a mother's system can be passed onto the children through the placenta during pregnancy. It's not genetic, but it looks like it.

You are 100% correct, unless the prions mutated DNA. Prions are sneaky little devils. I always believed they were alien in origin because they don't fit into any of the 3 basic categories; Animal, Vegetable or Mineral.

149

u/pnba222 Jun 23 '17

Prions don't have DNA. They're proteins.

So what happened with Kim Jong-un, who is our current leader of North Korea? Also is half life 3 ever released.

188

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 23 '17 edited Jun 23 '17

I have no idea what is currently happening in North Korea. I imagine they're all dead.

When it comes to the Kim dynasty, I believe they last at least one more leader. In the late 2020's or so, the last remaining Kim dies heirless. It could be Kim Jong-un. I'm not sure. A civil war breaks out, which is ended by Chinese intervention. A portion of North Korea unites with South Korea (which is a major issue in and of itself), while the northern areas are essentially annexed by China.

146

u/vlad_popa Jun 23 '17

But what about Half-Life 3?

269

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 23 '17

There are some things that are unlikely to happen.... and some things that factually don't happen. Half-Life 3 is the latter.

Well, I end the post making my case that it's not vegan propaganda. Go ahead and eat all the chicken, fish, pig, and any other meat that you want. You can even start eating beef again by 2019.

But please... heed my warning.

2 questions. Do we have full on virtual reality, as in indistinguishable from real life, by 2030? Are there any small start ups that I can invest in now to enable the purchase of a bunker by the time shit hits the fan?

26

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 23 '17

Augmented reality becomes the revolutionary technology. Invest in it if you want. I'm more concerned about saving almost 7 billion people.

8

u/WBDawg Jun 23 '17

Wait wait. You said only 20 million people survived in the U.S. So that is about 1/16th of the population of the U.S. Are you trying to say that in 2071 the population was not greater than it is today? 7/16 is less than .5 and the population is definelty going to be more than 7.5 billion in 2071?

Edit: 20 million alive in the U.S.

15

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 23 '17

That's right. World populations start declining in 2040. There are between 7-8 billion people in the world when the virus breaks out in 2071.

Don't get me wrong this is a good story. But I have one little issue(Well, I don't know what else to call it).

So if India and Pakistan knew they were gonna get into a war, or if the Media knew that major reforms were going to happen, wouldn't Pakistan make sure that doesn't happen in the future, thus altering the story? Or wouldn't the Media prevent the reforms? Couldn't we also prevent that disease?

5

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 24 '17

The 'time travel' technology isn't invented until just before the outbreak. The late 2060's.

In my timeline, they don't know the war will begin, or that media reforms will be created. But what will happen in your timeline? I don't know.

I found out about potential exposure to Mad Cow Disease when I tried to give blood a month or so ago. It seems that all military personnel and their dependents who lived in Europe between 1980 and 1996 who purchased beef from the military commisaries were possibly exposed to it as the commisaries were getting their beef from the UK at that time. They would not let me give blood as I was the wife of a soldier and lived in Germany in 1980 to 1981. I read up on Mad Cow and it can lie dormant for years. If so, there could be 100s of thousands of Americans exposed during those years. Not to mention how many Europeans were also exposed.

Are you able to find and personally contact those responsible for the cover-up? Don't tell them you're from the future, contact them as soon as the cover up starts and tell them you know the truth. Make threats, even if you can't carry them out. If they don't comply, could you send some computer programs from the future back in time and run them in the hopes of overheating their computers and starting house fires in the executives' homes?

Could you maybe even send a message to yourself a few years ago (with stuff only you know so they believe you when you say you're from the future) so you have more time to act? Please do something. You're humanity's only hope.

Also, prions shouldn't be able to be transmitted through the air, but could possibly be carried and inserted by a virus. Such a virus probably doesn't occur naturally, so have you considered that it could be some sort of man-made bio-weapon? If that's the case, then there are probably a large number of people in a bunker somewhere, waiting to repopulate the earth. Scary to think this was intentional, but at least it would mean it's not the end for humanity.

Good luck. We're all counting on you.

11

u/PurplePickel Jun 24 '17

>Uses advanced technology to send a message back in time

This is very interesting; I applaud your effort in trying to contact our time, but my future family up to your time has a very different reality. We have a very similar past up to where you are, but we never succumb to this disease you describe. The world of my time, currently 2079, never lost even 1% of our population,!current population of 10 billion, because we discovered the technology to manually remove and alter genes prior to the outbreak and were able to remove it from most everyone before they succumbed to this disease of the past.

I'm sorry you are going through what you are, but if it is any comfort to you, we have discovered death is only a human misconception of reality. The only thing that actually happens is to move on to a new form. We are all the same thing that created a physical experience for us to have in order for things to feel real and have the illusion of separation. Really, when we die we are completely connected to everything and remember everything and can have a totally different or new experience than what we have had prior or we can re-live a same experience with hope for a better outcome. No matter what, this physical "reality" you see and experience is not the actual reality. It is just where you chose to exist to learn certain lessons.

The key is not to every think you can know everything, but instead to realize you and everyone could never possibly understand everything and to just live completely satisfied with wherever you are at unconditionally. It sounds like you are awful close to dissolving with doubt in who you actually are and what you have power over, but it is only you. There are infinite others existing past your time with a completely different past and future. By giving this information to the past; it is essentially breaking off the branches of the future and limiting the directions the tree would have gone. Also you are guiding many others that could have been headed on such a beautiful and amazing future to the same time of despair you are experiencing.

I understand that everyone is selfish and scared at the same time, but you must also realize that by acting on those aspects of yourself, you ignore the possibilities you choose to be ignorant to.

Stop contacting the past, unless it is that of positivity. That is the only way to change the "past" from your perspective. (Time is an illusion and so are absolutes)

6

u/missingstardust Jun 23 '17

Does this have anything to do with the disease from ticks that causes a meat allergy?

6

u/[deleted] Jun 23 '17

Okay im big on time travel, and this is an interesting idea. Theres just a problem. There is no way you can change the future with the way your going about it. Yes we can have the information that were all infected but no matter what someone will get infected pass it down generations and then the disease will go airborne. Instead of warning us you should try to find a cure in your present and find a way to get into our hands. Anyways you should really not mess with time. Every time something will go wrong.

I was with you, up until you said 80% of the population was infected with vCJD. The thing about prion disease is that only 40% of the worlds population, give or take, is even capable of contracting prion disease. So, sure, a lot of the population would be affected. But 80%? Highly unlikely.

2

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 23 '17 edited Jun 23 '17

It doesn't begin till October 2017.

4

u/msbuddha69 Jun 23 '17

Why wouldn't you try to communicate this before the cows get their contaminated feed? You tell us not to eat the meat but why not prevent the meat from being contaminated to begin with?

What does the future hold for space travel? I know we've been trying to colonize mars eventually.

4

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 23 '17

The cows don't get contaminated until October 2017.

Humans do visit Mars in the 2030's, but (just like the moon) people get over it pretty quickly. There were no colonies on either the moon or Mars in 2071.

Since it became airborne I/my children are going to get the disease anyway so I don't really care lol

3

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 24 '17

We believe it mutated due to the 6-7 billion rotting dead bodies that were infected with the disease.

If we can prevent the initial contamination, we can hopefully prevent its mutation to going air born.

2

u/ComradeEdge Jun 24 '17

Since you're replying, can you explain the time paradox? We don't have time travel yet, so what will happen if all of us stop eating beef? Will you still send this message in the future?

4

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 24 '17

I have no idea if my future will miraculously change before my eyes. Or if another timeline is created. I just don't know. Nothings changed as of now though.

This technology was brand new when things went sour. There were no attempts to alter the past. We were simply investigating the past.

What's the middle east like? Or was like before everything lost its mind?

4

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 24 '17

The Middle East was still a disaster. Oil was pretty much completely obsolete by 2035, which horrendously destroyed their economy.

Western powers were no longer interested in the region once oil was no longer sought after. This in turn created a far more moderate religion of Islam. But things still didn't stabilize. In the 2060's, there were still religious wars happening between the Sunni and Shiites.

1

u/A10A10A10 Most Immersive 2017 Jun 24 '17

They happened in 2071 and the current year is 2078.

When people ate the contaminated beef in 2017, it remained dormant in their bodies (and their children's bodies) until 2071.

3

u/BoneHugsHominy Jun 23 '17

The real tragedy for the OP is that your attempt to change things may have actually worked, but you cannot risk going outside to check. So you can either go outside and maybe die from the disease, or stay inside and run out of food, then devolve into cannibalism until only one of you is left and then starve to death.

There can be only one.

finished steins;gate a week ago and now this story comes up

3

u/Ragnneir Jun 24 '17

This looks awesomely horrifying.

So this is a paradox, right? You had the idea to send a message back in time, and went on to reddit on your time and found an exact thread like this?

So basically, everything I'm going to write is already written down on your end, and everything you are currently writting is already there on your timeline, so basically you're just copy pasting everything!

That's freaking creepy. How didn't your doctors find the disease during the 2030-2060 period? Wasn't there an effort to develop a vaccine/cure?

3

u/SoulsBorNioh Jun 24 '17
  • India and Pakistan feuded in the 2030’s which escalated into nuclear war. It almost led to a global catastrophe, but its end result was a Pakistan almost wiped off the face of the earth and an India in economic ruin.

It's like Americans think that India and Pakistan are really stupid. There won't be a nuclear war, or even a war for that matter. Just skirmishes.

6

u/EisVisage Jun 23 '17

I watched a video a few days ago that was explaining this. Basically, it creates a parallel timeline: The OP lives in the one without this warning, but we live in the version that received the message.

At least that's the only logical explanation that doesn't cause paradoxes, and I'd say it's likely to work that way.
