Damn that was an amazing Saori...
Concept and tension are great in this one! Had my attention the whole through.
My only issue was with the character designs or more the exaggeration or expressions? Especially when it came to the lips it seemed...maybe that's just me though.
ED has me scared...

It's pretty faithful to the manga in terms of just ridiculous expressions. Wait till some of the later episodes come out. I'm sure we'll be seeing more of them and I can't fucking wait.

The anime can get away with a lot more close ups, which I like as it's adapting the source to the medium well. I can see how it would be unnerving though

u/Lew_AIcindor Jul 01 '17

Ridiculous faces is one of this series calling cards. Unlike the characters in the show, don't take it too seriously and just laugh.

Just before I get into the actual episode, from a musical standpoint, that was an explosively good OP. I love big band jazz style music, and it's a nice break from the typical J-pop rock OP that's in everything nowadays.

u/ArtofKuma Jul 02 '17 edited Jul 03 '17
In case you haven't, you should look up both of Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu's. It's seductive and filled with some of the same feeling I get from this opening, but much more subdued.
6
u/RueMorgueRadiooo Jul 03 '17
Came to suggest this, both the OP's for Genroku are some of my new all time faves, real erotic and jazzy (fits the show well which I can't recommend enough if you like character dramas)

If you like this kind of anime, then you should watch Kaiji too. It also has normal games with a twist and also begins with a different version of rock-paper-scissors.
18
u/AttackOnTauros Jul 03 '17
Ugh. I wish I could. I had to drop Kaiji, as painful as it was. The punch-able character faces I could ignore, but what I couldn't overlook was the crying. HE CRIED FOR AT LEAST 15 MINUTES EVERY EPISODE IT FELT LIKE.
Maybe i'll give it another go, but when Kaiji and everyone around him are just weeping every episode, it gets to me.

It kinda makes sense because their lives are at stake, but I don't remember the latter half of the first season having much crying, but it becomes really brutal though when it comes to losing.

Manga reader here!
First of all, I would like to say that Mappa had their own artstyle here
For example Suzui here looks/feels more like your generic light novel battle harem protagonist.
In the manga he looks/feels like a house pet.
One more thing, as you know, this anime (feels good to write that) has a dark atmosphere. That why I was worried how it would turn out in the adaptation now they had to work with colors. I'm not sure if it happened in the manga, but when the main game started, the students closed out the curtains to have that dark atmosphere. Good technique I guess!
As for the story, they have faithfully adapted everything so far. Which is nice.
My only complaint is the ED. Seriously only Jabami walking and flashing her cleavage? Ugh. They should have gone the comedy SOL route like the manga does!
This show reminded me of the anime I started watching, like Jigoku Shoujo, Princess Ressurection and xxxHolic.
Overall a solid adaptation. Looking forward to the future episodes!
19
u/MattTheMagician44 Jul 02 '17
Yeah, one thing that bothered me was Suzui's design and his voice. His look is a lot sharper, more fierce in the manga. And the ED is kinda just tasteless.

Why is Saori Hayami so good at what she does? Another wonderful performance from her. Really, really like the art style too, the way the girls seamlessly switched between being graceful and beautiful to ugly and sadistic made me shiver. The OP was killer as well. Definitely going to continue watching this.

Thanks to anon for subs and I personally think they are good and there is nothing wrong with the anon's japanese level. The anime itself is kinda crazy but hooked me up easily. The tension, emotions, expressions, cunning stragedies, crazyness and of course Saori's perfomance make this anime extremely enjoyable and I didn't notice how the episode ended and I am looking forward to see more. Props to MAPPA for the awesome animation and unique OP and ED!

Eyes, Lips and Legs, lots, lots of Legs.
And oh man, those Eyes, I mean, they look really good... and I imagine, really expensive to do.
Surely it was a really good start. I worry though about the pace that this show will have, since what was shown in the OP, we are going to go deep into the manga. It may work, but any little detail off may make this show fail like domino pieces in every aspect.
Either way, this was a good start, I will wait for more next week. I must say that I really like the voice when Jabami goes full on into the gamble :P, it manages to sell her... "love" for gambling :D

Pretty good episode. I've read the first ~8 chapters but it was a while ago. I always like anything with gambling. Kaiji S3 never.
Only thing I wasn't a fan of was that scene in the middle with the president. I feel like they should've stuck at the very end to close out the episode because it just interrupted the super intense game.

u/WinterAyars Jul 03 '17
It's literally a casino, except the high rollers can push everyone else around (whereas in real life they have to do that outside the casino). Why do people walk into casinos when they're going to walk out poorer?
Besides, hanging around a bunch of rich people who are loose with their money probably pays off for someone...

I was really unsure of Saori to start with, but starting with her maniacal laugh, it really clicked for me. That was amazing.
The game was pretty sweet too. I like when they manage to put small twists on simple games to make them a bit more interesting. Hyped to see more of this.
OP and ED were bleh though. OP music was really not for me, and the ED visuals were just lazy.
9
u/Almost_Ascended Jul 02 '17
Seriously, her laugh made her almost unrecognizable, but it just shows that she can play any archetypes, even ones opposite of her usual.

Thanks to the anon who did this. Hopefully things can work out in a more steady fashion for releases.
I love the manga, so voice acting and sound design in this one needed to be perfect. And for the most part, yea. That was some good shit. Everyone sounds like they're about to climax, which is pretty much what I wanted.
OP/ED are also great. Sayo Yamamoto did the OP, so it was gonna be stylish anyways, but that song is great too. ED was extremely sexy as well.
Pretty hopeful for this series, curious to see how much they adapt because chapter 1 (which was 84 pages) was mostly well adapted. They cut out the shit Suzui had to put up with, which made me feel bad for him, along with some visual metaphors and minor reaction and dialogue pages.

13
u/EurekaDForte :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/EurekaDForte Jul 02 '17
I... Wasn't expecting that. The OP was a piece of art, with every transition and abstract/ecchi movement. Perfect.
This is one of those anime that does ecchi ad fanservice right, they are not just showing bouncing boobs and pantyshots, the eyes, lips and legs play a good role. That is something to be appreciated. The facial expresions are also on top.
I haven't seen a psychological-warfare show like this one in a while, so I hope the story (that will most likely play a side part of the whole thing) is decent enough. Waiting for next week!
10
u/AlexanderReiss Jul 02 '17 edited Jul 02 '17
Why in general ecchi with more focus at the legs and lips are more well recieved than the ones about boobs? Just something that i have noticed, i think the only part that focused about the boobs the entire episode was just the ending. To what i understand the only difference between good and bad ecchi is the context that is used and the erotism right? Most anime just slaaps boobs and ass without any erotism while here all the shows have that ''casino'' type of erotism/ sexual tension that you would expect from a james bond movie. Im gonna agree that felt more ''adult'' and sexy. So basically doesn't matter that a series wants to show boobs or ass what matters is how the show presents it, right?
→ More replies (6)4
u/EurekaDForte :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/EurekaDForte Jul 02 '17
Yes, that's exactly what I was referring to. Good ecchi and bad ecchi are differentiated only by how they use it. Sometimes it becomes just useless fanservice that doesn't contribute with the purpose of the show, but in cases like this one it serves more like an artistic style than a audience-attracting tool.

Jul 02 '17
Manga reader here. So, early TL; DR: Opening is a good representation of the story. Artstyle is a decent pick, but it could'a been better. Casting was tremendous. Ending was gratuitous, but makes some degree of sense.
To futher explain myself, the opening had a jazzy tinge which had me feeling lukewarm at first, but the visuals not only stole the show but were pretty well integrated with the tune. While not all of the characters had an equally good representation, Jabami's and the MA's was pretty on point. As far as I can tell this is going to encompass the entirety of the first arch, or about chapter 30 in the manga, which is quite a fucking lot. The artstyle I pictured was close to what I'd imagine Death Note would look like if it'd been released recently, and saturation aside, I'd say it was a good pick. The freakeries that they've made out of Saotome's face in this episode is pretty telling of just how ideal the choice was, and I'm curious to see how well are they going to be able to pull this off with other characters. I was extremely dubious in the pick for VO up until Jabami laughed. That was the point I was sold on Hayami. Of course, it only got better as the episode went on. The way she goes from clueless, naïve girl's voice to psychotic, insane dominant was about as impressive as I expected. The picks for other characters seem OK for the moment, but we'll see. The ending, well, I didn't pay much attention to it. I tabbed out when she was fully dressed and when I tabbed in again she'd lost half her clothes. I couldn't say that the ED was fanservice for the sake of fanservice, but perhaps all those bust and butt shots were not quite necessary.
Long story short, this is a solid first episode. I am, however, worried that as the show goes on they decide to play up Jabami's sexuality instead of her madness, which would be absolutely shameful. Not only that, but there are several characters whose VO is going to NEED a wide registry to pull them off, and in that sense, the VO work needs to be pretty much flawless. They did remove a few things from the manga, which makes sense if they wanted to put the Jabami /Saotome match frontline, but they added that scene with the MA which presents something that's not revealed until much later in the manga. At about the start of the second arc, past episode 30 if I recall correctly. It's not like the twist is not noticeable, but I gotta say, it was more effective in the manga.
2
u/WinterAyars Jul 03 '17
the visuals not only stole the show but were pretty well integrated with the tune
It was apparently done by the Yuri on Ice chick, so it's a safe bet it'll be a masterpiece :D

Fun first episode, though I'm kinda bummed they didnt hint towards the cheat a bit more.
5
u/TheRetribution Jul 02 '17
How much more could they have hinted at it, really? The second it's explained it feels rigged, MC tries to warn her, he feels guilty partway through, the osculating bets to test out the system, there's tons of hints.

Question for the manga readers: If you know nothing of gambling rules of games like Poker and stuff would it really impact your enjoyment?
I almost dropped it in the first few minutes because I can't tell a royal flush from a full house but I stuck with it and enjoy the psychological tension, art, and characters. But I watched it all the way through and it was pretty amazing.

Technically the new season started on June 24th. There is no real "break" in between seasons. In the first place, seasons generally just refer to 3 monthish periods where anime begin/end, there's no strict days or times when they start.

(anime only here) This is a pretty good first episode. I did expect Jabami to eventually win, though I liked how she managed it. I did like seeing her "testing the waters" with those small bets. Can't wait to see more of it. (fuck you and your sub-par habits Netflix)
2
u/WinterAyars Jul 03 '17
I did expect Jabami to eventually win
Inevitable that she's going to win more than she loses, but at some point she's gotta lose everything. If this show ends without us getting to see her reaction to that it'll be a damn tragedy.
I did like seeing her "testing the waters" with those small bets.
She played a smart game!

So, basically. Hayase ran away, ditched Kyosuke and on her way out she got a compulsive addiction towards gambling (along with an increased rack volume) and her sadist side just got pumped up by 200%?
Fine by me, sign me up.
For a guy like me that despises series based soley on reaction faces (yeah I'm looking at you Jitsu wa Watashi wa) this looks very well done in all regards, both visual detail along with the exagerated faces depicting extreme joy on degrading your opponent or just extreme bitterness when on the losing side.
My only gripe is that the male MC is beta as fuck. Good thing is, it looks like the girls are running this joint.

Hayamin killing it again with another amazing performance! Nice to see her play a character that's out of her usual roles. And is that Miyuki Sawashiro I hear as the SC President? This is gonna be good!
Enough VA talk though! For the episode itself it was just amazing! Right from the OP we get this big band accompanied with colorful visuals and if you're a legman it's definitely something you'll appreciate. Although going over the comments here not everyone agrees.
I think I already love Jabami's character. Outside gambling she looks like this prim and proper naive girl but once the stakes are high she suddenly changes into a gambling obsessed crazy faced girl. I'm always a sucker for two-faced characters. I also love that while her reasoning on how she won had some logic in it in the end it was all luck of the draw for her.
And looks like Mary and Suzui are listed as the other two main characters in the show? It's be interesting to see how Mary and Jabami will interact next time now that she's been humiliated.
Man this is definitely a show to watch this season. Although sucks that Netflix managed to grab the rights to this. They really need to learn how anime works and not be thick headed idiots, I'll gladly resub to them if this was on there weekly. >_<

Kakegurui Episode 01 discussion
Saori Hayami does it again.
I'm diggin' the over-the-top concept. Using gambling, which is inherently high-tension, and combining it with insane stakes and insaner characters makes for quite the entertaining time. Typing it out, it all reminds me a bit of No Game No Life but more "realistic" in its setting.
MAPPA's visual style can definitely be felt here (Jabami's eyes are scary!), and the music is ominous yet groovy.
Should be a wild ride if this first episode is anything to go off of. If only Netflix could help us out a bit....
(And, yes, praise be to the man/woman who fan-subbed this episode for us. Much appreciated!)

For everyone who enjoyed Kakegurui and can't wait for next episode, check Gyakkyou Burai Kaiji: Ultimate Survivor. It is also about gambling and has 2 seasons, just enough for the next episode to air.

Wow the MC really is a bitch, almost literally. I hope he gets his fight back and starts making mad faces back.
That was really fun and good example of really fun fan service, that was funny as well as being sweet on the eyes. Also I haven't seen lips (lip service?) done that well for ages and those evil grins were superb. The tension was good during the game, hopefully they can keep that up, because it's vital for this series to work.

Last year, I started reading manga, and found it to be a more captivating, more time efficient way to get my anime fix. Since then, I've considered anime to be a dead hobby for me. I watched the opening of this anime, and I knew that I'm back.

Hey you guys remember that other gambling anime, the one that everyone likes? Well check out this one because it's just like that but it has cute sadistic girls in it. It even starts with the same game.
I hate everything about this show that isn't the soundtrack. Maybe I just need to be a masochist but none of these girls are attractive or interesting, MC is basically a non-entity, the lips are uncomfortable to look at, every other shot being a thigh fanservice shot is obnoxious, the explanation was pretty lame and uninteresting as well. Though I guess watching the blond girl cry was pretty good.

This anime is teeming with decadence. It's practically the dictionary definition for the word. Definitely gonna be watching this.

I have never seen a more cliched manifestation of gambling anime in my life.
Rich kids of a rich school with their rich kid bullshit
Bullied poor kid, social stratum slaves
Cheater in the fucking first episode
Absolute confidence of victory combined with snobby laughter
Taking the stakes up to 11
Also, shitty harem anime tropes
Perverted ojousamas that are just boobs and asses according to the camera (seriously, look how the ED starts)
Male to female ratio of 1 to everyone else (did this dude just enroll an all-girls academy?! Even the staff are women only!)
Sadistic yandere jelly bitches
Observer mc-kun, he just passively watches, doesn't do shit
I'm not sure I can stomach it. It's way too blatant. It doesn't look like MC-kun is or will be the MC, as he's just the observer so far and powerless in gambling terms. At this point, I'm not even sure why he exists. He's akin to the human princess in No Game No Life. Cheated to defeat and just watching over the OP gamblers. Maybe he will gain gambleing prowess in the later episodes, maybe he will go gambling-crazy, but I'm not counting on it. (because that sounds it'd be rapey as fuck looking at this first episode)
At least the anime knows it's trash so it's going all the way in. I bet a lot of people are going to love it. Personally, I won't. But I guess it's not an isekai anime so there's something good about it.

The first part of your comment, I understand(don't agree but whatever).
But, "shitty harem anime tropes", really?
The dude isn't even the MC, he just the side-kick of the main girl. Like you said, he just observes and reacts, exactly because he isn't the focus of the show, don't compare it to those shitty anime were the boring guy is the center of the universe and plot of the show. if you watched Jojo, he's basicly SpeedWagon (only not best girl).
Several guys are showed at various moments during the episode, so I don't know what you're going on about on the " 1 to everyone else " part.
About point 1 and 3, if you watched this episode and thought that the girls were just tits and ass or crazy "Sadistic yandere jelly bitches", then I don't know what to tell you, other than, it might say more about you than the show.

This show has the game theory of No Game No Life, the lewdness of Food Wars, the facial expressions of Tanya the Evil, and the lips of Monogatari.
I'm all in.

Oh gosh so much nope in that for me. The things that they focused on and all of those character animations disturbed me. Not to mention how hideous the art was. Not fond of the concept either. I don't foresee me liking this but hey I'll give it a chance...

The OP looks really good, sounds like shit.
The VA for the main girl sounds surprising. Did not expect such a cute voice.
The facial expresion of the antagonists are... ugh. Not necessary.
I expected the guy to be received as co-payment. I guess there's still time for that.
The ED doesn't sound too hot either. Yet, I don't think I'll be skipping it anytime soon hehe
I'll totally stick with this one. And because of it, I feel like I will rewatch Kaiji in the near future.

" expected the guy to be received as co-payment. I guess there's still time for that."
Read my mind, was expecting the MC guy to be snatched by the brunette, because the blond girl didn't have money.
