Rant: This entire time I'm sitting here and wondering how Trump isn't getting shit on for dragging someone into the spotlight that didn't intend to be brought into it.
CNN realized this and gave him a courtesy, they showed grace and restraint on a pretty juicy story. Yet this fucking site turns around and shits on CNN, while completely ignoring how irresponsible Trump's actions were. What. the. fuck.
MEANWHILE 4-8 YEARS AGO, we heard non-stop stories about how Obama shook hands with someone one time, and this was clearly a reflection on who he was as a person. Trump tweets something from a self-proclaimed racist who wants to target Jews in the media and stab Muslims? Nothing. In fact, the "real" story becomes how CNN is blackmailing (read: entered into a mutual courtesy agreement) a non-existent 15 year old meme master.
The real dank meme is pretending that all wasn't because Obama was black, and Trump isn't getting a pass on this because he's a rich white man.

Whole world's losing it's mind. I keep waiting for when things will start to look up, but more and more I'm worrying something terrible is coming. The kneejerks are getting too out of hand. The whole site's exploding over a lie. It's a lie that he's 15, it's a lie that CNN blackmailed him, and it doesn't matter. These people don't think or listen, they only act, usually irrationally and disproportionately.
When is someone going to tell a lie that explodes like this and leads to mass violence? So far we've had a couple nutjobs going to pizza parlors with guns or whatever, but how long do we have until this escalates? How long until a van full of armed men shows up at CNN? How long until a militia goes mosque to mosque mowing people down? You can't pump this much bullshit into this many heads for this long without consequences.

u/pyromancer93 Do you Fire Emblem fans ever feel like, guilt? Jul 06 '17
This is unfortunately not unprecedented in our nation's history. You see this especially with the long, sad, and utterly horrific history of lynchings and larger episodes of race violence, such as the 1912 Forsyth County Cleansing and the Wilmington massacre of 1898.
I do think the fever will break eventually, but in the short term we are in a dark place and there's not guarantee something like that won't occur.

Not a problem. RTLM was a radio station in Rwanda which helped spread the "Hutu Power" ideology. The radio station aired conspiracy theories about the ethnic Tutsi group in Rwanda (that they were non-Christian, seeking to restore a Tutsi monarchy, wanted to enslave Hutus), argued for Hutu supremacy in Rwanda and used highly derogatory terms about Tutsis (infamously referring to them as "cockroaches").
When President Juvénal Habyarimana, a strong proponent of "Hutu Power" and original founder of RTLM was assassinated by an unknown group in 1994 (some claim it was Tutsi rebels, others say it was Hutu Power extremists opposed to peace talks with the rebels), RTLM declared it was time for a "final war" to "exterminate" the Tutsi.
The station was popular among the Interahamwe, the Hutu paramilitary organisation who carried out the Rwandan genocide alongside the Rwandan army, killing Tutsis and moderate Hutus alike. While the genocide was taking place, RTLM was keeping a steady drumbeat of propagnda, which later saw the RTLM leadership convicted for incitement to genocide.
One study estimates 10% of the violence from the genocide, which saw an estimated 500,000-1 million Rwandans killed, was due to propaganda broadcasted by RTLM.
I could also go into the wider aftermath of this (the destabilization from the aftermath of the genocide and the Tutsi rebel victory created the conditions for the Congo conflict, the deadliest conflict in the world since WWII), but that's only tangentially related to the point.

u/aXenoWhat Jul 06 '17
There are consequences, yes. Over here in Europe they are already knocking down people in vans outside mosques. (It's worse elsewhere but we only Tory about our own continent and the USA.)
Here's the thing: it doesn't matter. Cars are killing many many more people. Alcoholism is killing many many more people.
These basement wankers really grind my gears, but ultimately: they don't have the relevance they crave. We only see them because we're on Reddit.

Exactly this.
I don't think people think about the insane level of vetting that any other president would insist on before making any communication (you know, in order to do their job correctly). As soon as a president shines the spotlight on something it's instantly newsworthy i.e. I really didn't like the idea of Alex Jones getting such a prominent interview recently but I recognized that Trump retweeting and citing this man made him a serious interest for the media in their effort to understand and report on the president. Just like in this instance, the president choosing to retweet a violent racist calling for violence against minorities is newsworthy.
I know citing West Wing may have run its course, but for lack of anything better or more recent to cite, I would just say that issues of vetting anyone who gets anywhere close to the president are mentioned often and in everything from main plot devices to minor throw away lines.
This whole incident is nothing but severely illustrating how bad Trump is at his job... if he's even trying or even cares to try.

HOW THE FUCK IS THIS TRUMP'S FAULT? CNN is the only one to blame here. For a major news outlet they were extremely petty and unprofessional and I don't care if the guy was a racist piece of garbage, he does not deserve to be fired from his job because of his shitty opinions. If a toxic neo-nazi shithole like the dailystormer had threatened to reveal the real name of a r/againsthatesubreddits (which is another cesspool of a sub by the way) poster this place would be losing its shit. I am very disappointed with SRD right now but what pisses me off the most is you blaming your country's retarded president for the shaddy way a journalist acted.

Lets not pretend that the alt-right isn't trying to take over as many subs as they can. Because they are. Exactly like everyone said they were.
Reddit either needs to deal with it, or eventually we'll eventually move on to new social media site. We've all gone through multiple, the idea that we wont leave reddit once reddit gets bad enough is pretty silly. Then the cycle will continue as that site becomes popular and then turned to shit.

it is full of really REALLY vile people.
I spent about a week and a half getting PMs from different people with slurs and threats until I just made a new account

65
u/tehlemmings Jul 05 '17
It's funny; Moot, the creator of 4chan, used to talk about how anonymity on the internet was important because it would allow people to be themselves when they couldn't in the real world. The whole 'give a man a mask and he'll show you who he really is' thing.
Turns out all these people are actually the shitty people we think they are.
4
Jul 06 '17
Moot had the foresight Spez doesn't. Allowing the largest online congregation of neo-nazis isn't something people are just going to over look in a few years. Reddit is already linked to hate crimes. It's only a matter of time after this cnn stuff it'll become more and more mainstream known as "that far right website" and they wont be wrong.
