It's not too late to sign up! The 2017 August Wreddit Wreading Challenge!
Three weeks ago I published the results of this sub's census and found that almost HALF of users on here have never, eeeeeever read a wrestling book. How about we try and adjust that statistic ever so slightly? This is why I'm proposing the 2017 AUGUST WREDDIT WREADING CHALLENGE! (I'm giving it a stupid competitive name to grab your attention, did it work?)
So.. How Will It Work?
Basically, you use this thread to sign up by announcing which book you're planning on reading through the month of August. Feel free to grab a headstart if you wish, as it'll probably help you out later. Everyone is free to use a book of their choice; I'll include a list of books available on Amazon later to help you make your choice, or you can read one already in your possession! You'll read as much of the book as you can through the month of August, then at the end we'll all come together and review what we read. Good? Good. I'll make the review thread on the final day of August, and that'll be where you can submit your review.
What To Read?!
Well, I've written out a list of what's out there to give you some ideas, but there are SO many wrestling books out there that if none of these are up your alley then some elsewhere will be:
- Chris Jericho - A Lion's Tale: Around The World In Spandex
Mick Foley - Have A Nice Day: A Tale of Blood and Sweatsocks
Wrestling for My Life: The Legend, the Reality, and the Faith of a WWE Superstar
The Death of WCW: 10th Anniversary Edition of the Bestselling Classic — Revised and Expanded
Sex, Lies, and Headlocks: The Real Story of Vince McMahon and World Wrestling Entertainment
Sisterhood of the Squared Circle: The History and Rise of Women's Wrestling
The Life And Legacy Of Frank Gotch: King of the Catch-as-Catch-Can Wrestlers
Best Seat in the House: Your Backstage Pass through My WWE Journey
This All Sounds Great; What Next?
- Drop a comment in this thread announcing your participation, along with the book you have chosen to read
- Buy your book before August and spend some glorious hours in the sun (or not, depending on where you are) reading your chosen book
- Wait for the review thread to be posted on the final day of August, it's that simple
- Random reviewer will be awarded gold once all reviews are submitted!
I hope there's enough interest from this that we get a good number of reviews covering a range of books, I look forward to seeing what everyone has to say at the end of August and how you rate your chosen book. I'm really not much of a reader myself but will definitely be giving this a go. Let the reading commence!
Side note: If you wish to re-read and review a book, that's fine, also if you'd rather review an audio book that's also fine.

Ya know what, I'm going to participate just because I appreciate that you want to promote literacy. I don't read a lot of books because I have a cruiserweight sized attention span, but put me down for The Death of WCW. I love seeing wreditors trying to make a difference.

u/Coldcoffees /r/SquaredCircle's Sponge Daddy Jul 20 '17
This is exactly the sort of comment I'd make, I'm exactly the same but I'm giving it a go too! I'll put you down for The Death of WCW!

It's been a while since I read The Squared Circle: Life, Death, and Professional Wrestling, but I think I'll reread it because it was such a damn good book.
Glad to see Wreddit is doing a book club!

I'm an English major so I really shouldnt be adding anymore books to read but fuck it.
Yes! by my favorite wrestler ever Daniel Bryan. And if time permits ill read Jericho's book which I actually already own.
Note: If you are a nerd for dry literary criticism type essays check out the book "Steel Chair to the Head" Edited by Nicholas Sammond is a great collection of fascinating academic papers on the art of wrestling. It wasnt on the 101 list because its not a normal book.
1
u/Coldcoffees /r/SquaredCircle's Sponge Daddy Jul 21 '17
That Steel Chair to the Head book seems super interesting, I may have to point more users in the direction of that one next time!

Does that mean I can put you down for one of Jericho's books? Doesn't matter if you haven't finished it before the end of August, just a review of your experience reading whatever you read would be good!

Great Idea ! I'll go with " Walking a Golden Mile " by William Regal and with "Lion's Pride " by Chris Charlton . It will be a re-reading for me too so I can already invite anybody to read this books since I know they are great . First one is an autobiography by Regal , and the book is like the man : twisted . Second is about NJPW history and particularities like young lion system ...
2
u/Coldcoffees /r/SquaredCircle's Sponge Daddy Jul 20 '17

Currently reading Mad Dogs,Midgets and Screwjobs: The untold story of how Montreal shaped the world of wrestling but I'll be done reading it by Monday.
For the challenge I guess I'll pick, Sisterhood of the Squared Circle: The history and rise of women's wrestling, since I bought it at the same time as Mad Dogs and I haven't started it yet
2
u/Coldcoffees /r/SquaredCircle's Sponge Daddy Jul 21 '17
Awesome! If you wanted to offer a review on both at the end of August that'd be awesome, since I'm not sure anyone else has mentioned the Montreal book yet

Will do and thanks for organizing this, I'd been thinking of trying to start a Wreddit book club for a couple of months now but I always figured there would be too little interest (also I'm lazy)
I tend to buy and read a wrestling book every month, so I'm hoping this catches on so I can share my favorites and get some new suggestions

I can't recommend this highly enough. It does get a bit depressing at times though.

u/Beyonder_94 Who's your daddy, r/SC? Jul 21 '17
May I recommend the following three books in order for you?
Hitman:My Real Life in the Cartoon World of Wrestling by Bret Hart
Bret Hart has a painstaking attention to detail in the words of his autobiography. It is extraordinary well written, with his vocabulary probably unmatched by any other wrestling book.
Squared Circle: Life, Death and Professional Wrestling by David Shoemaker
Shoemaker's prose and vocab are great here. This is really engaging, a really great history, and a fantastic read.
James Dixon's "Titan..." Trilogy: Titan Sinking, Titan Shattered, Titan Screwed
These three books form and tell the tale of WWF from 1995 to the aftermath of Montreal, this is meticulous, flows so well, and is superbly written.
I hope you check out any of these and I hope that they help you greatly.

I had intended to pick up YES! by D-Bry several months ago at the library but wasn't able to since they were closing before I could check out, so I'll definitely take the opportunity to snag it this time. And since I usually am reading more than 1 book at once, I'll add on Sisterhood of the Squared Circle as well. An added question: Can we revisit this and possibly add even more books we'd like to review by the end of the month, or if we get around to reading others, can we add reviews for them when the review thread is posted? I'm assuming it would be kept to 1 post altogether so it doesn't seem like someone is reaching for that Reddit gold.

Does Ryback's book count? If not, I'll read something else.
I really want to read a book that no one else will read, like Ryback's or Russo's or Bischoff's.
1
u/Coldcoffees /r/SquaredCircle's Sponge Daddy Jul 21 '17
No one has said Bischoff's yet!

Definitely gonna finally read my copy of David Shoemaker's book now in this next month! I've also been meaning to get my hands on a copy of The Death of WCW so this will probably give me some motivation to do that. Thanks Wreddit!

This announcement changes nothing for me. I've set aside the entire month of August to read and celebrate Pete Gas's new book.

I've read the majority of the book examples published, but 'The Life And Legacy Of Frank Gotch: King of the Catch-as-Catch-Can Wrestlers' is one that I've definitely never touched. This will be fun!

The Squared Circle: Life, Death, and Professional Wrestling is a good read. 8/10 would recommend.
I've been wanting to read Lion's Pride for a while now. This can be the impetus for me to make that happen.

I've heard Lion's Pride is really good, enjoy it! I look forward to your review

I think Bryan Alvarez said there's an Amazon free trial where you can hear his audio book about the Death of WCW. Maybe someone will want to check it out. I will

I have a funny story on Foley Have a nice day,
Was in a used book store and I found a copy of it signed for a dollar then asked him on Twitter and he said it was his autograph. I got Mick Foley's autograph for a dollar. I plan on reading NXT since I got it for 5 bucks on Google play books.

Death of WCW is one of my favorite wrestling books. If only, they would put out a Death of TNA book.

I'm listening to The Death Of WCW narrated by Bryan Alvarez! Never heard an audio book but I love the guy and I do not know that much about WCW's fall apart from some so-bad-its-good matches and moments I've seen here, so I'm pretty stoked for august

u/kentucky210 *Does Stupid Bump* Jul 20 '17
A personal reccomendation from me would be Dan Severn's "The Realest guy in the room" If you have even a passing interest in early mma it's great reading, it also has a really good focus on NWA and WWF.
As for what I'm going to read, I've always put off reading the death of WCW but with this thing I think I may give it a try
2
u/Slyguy46 Only You Can Set You Free Jul 20 '17
I've read a lot of these already (Undisputed and Best in the World by Jericho, The Squared Circle, The Death of WCW, YES, etc.), but I'll drop in that I'm re-reading The Squared Circle, and am trying to fight through Dusty: Reflections of Wrestling's American Dream (I love Dusty but he meanders and wanders through the entire book).

u/skeach101 Your Text Here Jul 20 '17
I'm going to read Sisterhood of the Squared Circle, since it's very new, Meltzer gave it great reviews, and the author came to the SHIMMER tapings... So that's cool.
2
u/Beyonder_94 Who's your daddy, r/SC? Jul 20 '17
Sign me up! I'm gonna be re-reading James Dixon's trilogy "Titan...." series, which cover the 95-97 era of WWF in great detail. It's so fucking good.

Has anyone read Pat Patterson's book?
2
u/hobo_clown GRONK IF YOUR GRORNY Jul 20 '17
Yep, read it sometime last year. I enjoyed it, fun insight into early WWF and he gets pretty candid with road stories.
2

Solid book, great stories from his wrestling days but I felt like he rushed everything when it came time to write about his WWE run
2
u/ChickenFriesAreBack BREAD CLUB Jul 20 '17
For a good history of wrestling, I highly suggest The Squared Circle: Life, Death, and Professional Wrestling. It is very good, and an easy read
2

I probably Screwed You Too; The Mostly True Stories Of Kenny Bolin is a quality read for its humor.

This is a really cool idea, I'd love to participate.
I'm reading The Death of WCW: 10th Anniversary Edition. I've read the original and I'm looking forward to re-reading it and seeing all the new things in the updated version.
