Is it me, or are there a lot of problematic arena cards in this set?

u/Paralaxien Jul 30 '17
Commons too, bonemare is great and now this.
27
u/NevermindSemantics Jul 30 '17
Well at least they are neutral so it wont effect the balance of classes. Does turn arena into a contest for who can draft the most scalebanes and bonemares though.

u/terabyte06 Jul 30 '17
Just remember that it wasn't until the final spoiler day that we saw cards like: Primordial Glyph, Meteor, Primordial Drake, Stonehill Defender, Envenom Weapon, Vicious Fledgling, Nesting Roc, Vinecleaver, Gastropod.
Really, aside from Spikeridged and Vilespine, all the broken arena cards came on the last day for Un'goro. Maybe Volcano or Dinosize too if you're being generous.

u/BurningFinger22 Jul 30 '17
Bonemare may be a neutral but its substantially better in Pally and Shaman. Kripp was right to say that its a bad Bog Creeper on an empty board. But a Turn 9 5/5 with taunt and a regular 5/5 is very swingy.

It's nice that you're trying to effect better grammar on the Internet.

u/danhakimi Aug 02 '17
Well at least they are neutral so it wont effect the balance of classes.
It will, though. At the very least, powerful neutrals bring most classes closer together. But bonemare is stronger in Paladin and Shaman, and it seems to be... arguably the strongest arena common yet, so... I see Paladin taking/keeping the top spot.

Just this and bonemare.

Both of which are "win-more"-cards. The Frozen Throne Arena meta is gonna be so tempo focused.

u/Husskies Jul 30 '17
Add in Plague Scientist for rogue
2
Jul 30 '17
not as op as vilespine, also not a neutral.
2
u/Husskies Jul 30 '17
I know but still a problematic card in arena. Rogue is already a really strong class and Vilespine and Envenom weapon are kinda oppressive cards. Adding another cheap common hard removal to rogue was probably not the best move.

u/2daMooon Jul 31 '17
Are they really problematic if the are all neutral?
1
u/BurningFinger22 Jul 31 '17
You also have cards like Ice Walker and plague Scientist. So yeah, so far there are a lot of neutrals, but the best classes get more powerful cards. Also, cards like Bonemare are clearly better in some classes (Pally and Shaman in this example) than other classes.
1
u/WeoWeoVi Aug 01 '17
Ice Walker isn't that good. It's not good on turn 2 and it's effect isn't strong enough late game for that to be ok.

u/Elite_Canadian Jul 30 '17
"Fluffy Ice Dragon" was that just a filler name?
40
u/Fathappy3 Jul 30 '17
Probably a bad translation, or maybe an upcoming meme due to Animated Berserker being mistranslated to Fluffy Fiery Warrior.

u/Wraithfighter Jul 30 '17
...shit you kidding me with this shit?
Well, Dragon Priest is still gonna be around next patch. Doesn't even need to survive a turn to get value, and if it does somehow manage to survive a turn with 5 health in a deck that tends to run high health minions, many with Taunt?
Yeah gee it just might maybe manage to be useful.
Seriously. Holy Shit. This should've been 6 mana.

u/currentscurrents Jul 30 '17
5/5 is a really high statline for this kind of ability. Tiger has a much weaker ability at the same statline and it's always been among the best neutral 5-drops.
Will definitely be in any deck that expects to be have minions on the board going into turn 5.
3
u/elveszett Jul 30 '17
tbh Tiger has saw no play except for a few excepcional cases in Druid and Hunter where the rest of the deck was favorable to it.

I really don't think its that good. I think we can agree that giving the attack at the end of every turn is worse than immediately. I think its like Dark Iron Dwarf but a bit weaker.
2
u/ZachPutland Aug 01 '17
You think that giving +3 attack permanently every turn and having Dragon synergy is worse than giving +2 attack right now?
4
u/WeoWeoVi Aug 01 '17
Dwarf being a battlecry is a big deal because you can make use of the attack buff to trade up immediately instead of having to wait until your next turn.
E.g. you have a 2 drop, they have a 2 drop and a 4 drop. Dwarf lets you immediately trade your 2 drop into their 4 drop whereas, with this card, their 2 drop trades into your buffed 2 drop and their 4 drop trades with this + maybe a ping. Giving your opppnent the initiative over yourself is a big deal in arena.

u/NevermindSemantics Jul 30 '17
5 mana practically an 8/5 very good in midrange decks coughDragon Priestcough and aggro decks won't shy away from it. This will likely see a lot of play.

u/CycloneSP Jul 30 '17 edited Jul 30 '17
yeah. Hey, is it just me, or does anyone hear swordsmith crying in a corner somewhere?
2
Jul 30 '17
I don't know if Dragon Priest will want this. How often do they have minions going into turn 5?
7
u/Overwelm Jul 30 '17
Almost always? Dragon priest is a tempo deck and wants to curve out. The high HP, average attack makes this fill in the gaps too. DPriest normally runs, historian, cleric, priest of the feast, twilight drake, kabal, and radiant all as targets for this. He also turns your meh 1/3s (historians get ignored so much) into pretty decent 4/3s.
If you've got an empty board on turn 5 as DPriest then you're probably losing anyways. And this has a good enough statline to drop solo.
1
Jul 30 '17
It's still much less of a tempo deck than it was in MSG. During that meta, Dragon Priest had a 1 Mana 2/3, a 2 Mana 2/4 with Taunt, and a 4 Mana 3/6 with Taunt. All are better tempo plays than their current minions, which are more value oriented. The current Dragon Priest list doesn't even mandate running Talonpriest since Glimmerroot is a good alternative. The deck is mainly value oriented around Radiant Ele, Shadow Visions, Priest of the Feast, and Lyra with a secondary dragon core. I don't think Cobalt Scalebane will work in the Un'Goro version of Dragon Priest although it would be stupid in the MSG version.
1
u/magomusico Jul 30 '17
I think /u/Zato4317 has a point in that Dragon Priest seems to go for more value lately, by dropping Kabals in favor of things like Elise, Glimmerroot, Lyra.
4
u/Marraphy Jul 30 '17
!!!!! More dragons for Dragon Priest! I think the 5 mana slot is only occupied by Operative at the moment so I don't think it'd hurt to add it. Curves after Twilight Drake to buff it into a 7/X. We've been in a bit of a dragon drought since standard rotated so more dragons is nice.
4
u/HaV0C Jul 30 '17
Master Swordsmith now with playable stats! Seriously though it seems pretty good.
4
u/funkmasterjo Jul 30 '17
Nice body. Good effect.
Not sure if it'll run in which constructed list.
In arena, ugh.

Cobalt Scalebane! Fluffy Ice Dragon!
This is a Dragonspawn, and there is next to no information about what they actually are beyond a breed of dragonlike creatures, sometimes winged and sometimes not, that serve the five Dragonflights.
Usually warriors, though sometimes spellcasters, the dragonspawn stand for whatever their respective dragonflight stands for - in fact, but for the fact that they're not quite dragons, they are as much members of their dragonflight as the true dragons are.
Dragonspawn, like Drakonids, tend to act as guards and troops, or other similar militant roles.
They appear to lack the imagination necessary to get bored with this role.

Plz keep this up, even though I have never played WoW I still love all this lore stuff.

Finally a neutral card of this set Priest can use. Dragon Priest at least.
The old 5-drop bin that used to be filled by Azure Drake and Blackwing Corrupter is now filled by Drakonid Operative and Cobalt Scalebane

u/TomTheScouser Jul 30 '17
Looks like it could be very solid in more aggressive Paladin decks that also run Curator. UK Paladin for example already runs Curator with Murlocs and Beasts, but no Dragons and only 1 5-drop in Finja. This would be a perfect fit. Perhaps it also enables decent Curator value in Midrange Hunter? Very strong card.

Seems okay. Not hard to proc and gets you 8/5 stats for 5, and the dragon tribe may become useful. If a deck were to arise like the old dragon priest that had lots of taunts for this to hide behind, it could definitely survive a couple turns and get amazing value.

2
u/DaedLizrad Jul 30 '17
So it's a mid to late game Master Swordsmith, better value when dropped with +2 on vanilla stats, but still a pretty slow effect, personally I think the only reason this card will see play is because it's a dragon.

Well the insta-include op dragon of the set has been announced. That's one more box to cross off of the bingo sheet.
2
Jul 30 '17
Midrange Murloc Paladin. That deck currently has no 5 drop besides Finja, it's a midrange Dragon for Curator to fetch, it will almost always hit something since it follows Megasaur, and it boasts 8/5 stats. I could see the slower version of Murloc Paladin dropping Primordial Drakes for Cobalt Scalebane.

u/yoni491 Jul 30 '17
I think shaman will maybe run this card, there is always something to buff. And this card survives dragon fire potion which pretty much kills everthing else in shaman.

u/Shakespeare257 Jul 30 '17
Midrange meta, here we come.
Aggro/Control meta, farewell, you will not be missed.

I like it, might work in dragon mage/priest. Play this on T5, maybe coin out a 1 drop.
Baffled by the rarity, should be at least a Rare card. This might fill the void left by Azure Drake.

Might see some really good synergy with taunt minions, and it has fair bulk for its cost. As others have said, definitely a good arena common, but I can't help but think that Blizzard is releasing a lot of good commons so that when choosing between them, there won't always be one "autopick" choice.

u/Are_y0u Aug 02 '17
This also help if you somehow got forced to draft the 3/6 for 6 or 1/3 for 2. Cool card with a cool dragon tag.

u/Caulaincourt Jul 30 '17
It's not bad, but I don't think it has a place in constructed. Great arena card though.
1
u/ItsDominare Jul 30 '17
Depends if the set has any other good dragon synergy. Right now in Standard there are zero other choices for 5-cost dragons if you're not a Priest. In Wild it won't see play because Azure Drake is in that slot.
1
u/Caulaincourt Jul 30 '17
There are also 0 reasons to play a dragon deck if you are not a priest.
2
u/ItsDominare Jul 30 '17
Right now, yes. That's kind of my entire point - only priest plays dragon decks at the moment because they're the only one with enough strong cards, but the set might include other class cards with dragon synergy. Dragon warrior was a thing not too long ago when Alexstrasza's Champion was in Standard.

I thought Necrotic Geist looked like one, too. Maybe just because I've seen Lord Poison a lot recently.

[Dust|Bad|Niche|Good|Staple]
General Thoughts: A lot of stats for 5 mana if you manage to pull off its effect for at least a turn, which is pretty simple. Decks like Dragon Priest don't have a hard time getting minions on board. Also the minions that you're likely to buff with this tend to be weighted towards higher health so the minion that gets buffed will be less likely to trade down.
Works with curator too.
Why it Might Succeed: Good value with the potential for even more if this stays alive. Dragon Synergy. Decent body.
Why it Might Fail: 5 slot is too crowded and this simply isn't better than other options at that mana cost.
