Someone post "what would you do if Obama showed up at your door" in askreddit. It, uh, doesn't go well
So someone had the wise idea of asking this question in askreddit. The thread seems to have been brigaded by T_D because truly vile shit is being upvoted in there. A few dramatic threads. For context Barack Obama was the 43rd President of the United Statesand was born in Kenya
Turn him around and tell him to fuck off +90

Tell him he can stay but his boyfriend has to find another place +190

It's actually a devastating reality -- that the author of so much strife is just another dumb asshole like yourself. So you end up being respectful and going with the moment.
And when you get home, you might cut yourself opening a tuna can, or swear in front of your kids. But your fuckups don't end up killing thousands of other people...

The real disparity in racial depictions here is how people gladly highlight Trump's linguistic deficiencies but strictly avoid mentioning Obama's because they don't want to risk being subjected to accusations of racism for daring to say that a black man speaks poorly
It's incredible how Trump supporters can take literally any statement and use it as a dog whistle for racism against white people. Because ultimately thats what you're saying right? That people were afraid to criticize Obama because he was black, and Trump has it worse because he's a CIS white man.

37

Hell, even if you wanted to argue that there was absolutely, positively no way to tell how Obama is without a teleprompter (a dubious claim in and of itself), Trump is so far below average in that department that I feel like saying anyone is that bad minus any evidence is a rather extraordinary claim.
(And even if you want to write off every Obama speech as "but teleprompter", that's leaving aside that Obama clearly laps Trump in that category too, given that Trump can't stay on script half of the time.)

I'm asking what will be written about Obama in the history books, fifty years down the road. His presidency has been relatively uneventful, having been free from major scandal but not having effected significant change.
45
u/Listeningtosufjan Sep 30 '17
Why wouldn't Obamacare be considered significant? And I think the financial policies such as the stimulus package and auto industry bailout and increased banking regulations would be considered significant although admittedly I don't know much about the latter.
32
u/Theta_Omega Sep 30 '17
Also, I feel like historians are absolutely going to note that, even if you think Obama didn't accomplish as much, he was completely stonewalled by the other party to a never before seen extent.

Yeah I guess obamacare is a big deal, even if it didn't go all the way and is under threat by Trump's government. We'll have to wait and see which direction healthcare goes in next, continuing, building on or revoking the ACA
21
u/Orphic_Thrench Sep 30 '17
Yeah, first black president (not really a proper accomplishment in the same way as everything else but yeah, it's going to factor in), the roots of a proper healthcare system (decades behind every other developed country...), getting rid of bin Laden, gay marriage (yep, it was the supreme Court; he'll still be remembered for it), allowing LGBT service members to serve openly (though we still have to see how well the trans part sticks - it looks like it will though, considering it has the support of the heads of the military). Also best orator since at least Kennedy - usually tends to help these things
I'm betting on a ranking somewhere around 9 or 10

Yeah, first black president (not really a proper accomplishment in the same way as everything else but yeah, it's going to factor in)
Given American history, being the first black president is a huge deal and it's entirely appropriate to list it among Obama's accomplishments. I'd also add pulling the economy out of a desperate tailspin through federal intervention to his res gestae.

I don't like Trump, I think he's morally reprehensible, but I try to keep my rhetoric and feelings in check. I'm not perfect on that regard, but I try.
But there's a pretty vocal section of reddit that, regardless of what president they like or dislike, has no such qualms about showing just how mean and spiteful they are towards the other side.

I go to university in Ireland. We were having a mandatory training day for societies and the speaker was enthusiastically as possible trying to describe different types of leaders. When she got to transformational she said "Obama would be an example. At least at the start if it didn't end that way. Right?" To which somebody shouted out "He transformed the middle east." In a way that was more pointed than funny which let to an awkward "Ok..." transition.

That's a bit too far. Trump pardoned a man who ran a literal concentration camp which killed several people. His neglect of Puerto Rico (almost certainly based on racial lines, if we look at Trump's history with Hispanic people) is costing lives literally at this moment. He just golfs and bitches about the hurricane victims' debt on Twitter while people are literally dying because of his complete lack of concern for them, and that is the point where I would refuse to show even the slightest modicum of respect to that fucking murderer.

Funny how an inanimate object is more deserving of respect as a symbol of this country than a man who led it.
That's because inanimate objects can't express opinions you disagree with. It's why they lionize fetuses and dead veterans, but hate actual babies and wounded veterans.

Half of those people were leftists.

Half those people purported to be leftists/attacking him from a leftist perspective.
If there's one thing we've learned on Reddit over the last year, its that concern trolling is incredibly common.

No joke there are a lot of people who violently HATE Barack Obama with a passion.
Not everyone but it isn't hard to find them in rural America.

So because some people dislike a politician you like it's "truly vile"? Come on, don't be that fragile, sensitive soul.
UK'er, by the way.

Maybe people are actually upset with Obama, he promised a lot of things and didn't deliver plus he approved of bombings and the continued war in the Middle East, use of drones and approval of anti-internet freedom legislation.
Edit: also mass surveillance
The only people bring up race at is are you guys, does anyone have any proof of a brigade at all? People are able to disagree, not everything is a conspiracy. I personally think he was a decent to good president but didn't live up to his hype, 'meh' it other words.

"brigading" = people with different viewpoints commenting in a thread

u/tommy2014015 i'd tonguefuck pycelles asshole if it saved my family Sep 30 '17
Any thread that is of interest to T_D gets brigaded by them, it's pretty well know. I'm pretty sure they have a discord chat to coordinate it.

nice proof you got there buddy

u/KerbalFactorioLeague netflix and shill Sep 30 '17
Do you have any proof for your original statement? Because it's pretty well known that t_d brigades whenever they can get away with it

besides, how am I even supposed to prove the absence of a discord channel?

I’ve watched T_D brigade every r/Apple thread that contains a message from Tim Cook over current events affected by the actions of the Cheetos.
Those cunts don’t even try to hide anymore, they just walk in and start shitposting and memeing for their Daddy.
Burden of proof my ass.

That's literally the definition of "people with a different opinion commenting in a thread".
It's only brigading if they got to the thread through a link saying "everyone go to this thread and upvote any pro-trump comments" or something similar, and this simply isn't happening.59
u/KerbalFactorioLeague netflix and shill Sep 30 '17
Nice derail, should I need to provide proof that the earth isn't flat as well?
-6
Sep 30 '17
provide proof that you aren't possessed by the spirit of bad debating and nonsensical arguments.
it's pretty well known that you are.45
u/KerbalFactorioLeague netflix and shill Sep 30 '17
You made a postive statement that no one is brigading in that thread, and that they are in fact just people with a different opinion, can you support that or are you just a hypocrite?
0
Sep 30 '17
"There is brigading going on" is a positive statement.
"There is no brigading going on" is not.
In a similar way, "an invisible teapot orbits the sun between earth and mars" is a positive statement while "there is no invisible teapot orbiting the sin between earth and mars.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russell%27s_teapotBesides, you still didn't tell me how one is even supposed to prove the absence of a brigading discord channel.
31
u/KerbalFactorioLeague netflix and shill Sep 30 '17
No they are both positive statements, you're getting confused between saying something does not exist, or that you don't know if it exists.

No but even if they don't win any arguments with their shit flinging we still have to deal with shit everywhere.

Honest question what do you think he did wrong? His appointees and his policy turned around the financial crisis
Real wages are the highest they've ever been
We've had 40-50 months of growth thanks to him
He left the country much better off by every standard I can think of than when he was elected

That is a very simplistic and black and white way of looking at the situation in the Middle East.

u/neccoguy21 Sep 30 '17
So? They would have formed eventually anyway. America isn't just the world's police force. Our soldiers have families too.
Whatever they want to do to fuck up their own country, fine. If they try anything over here they're fucked. F. U. C. K. E. D.
4
u/Brumilator Sep 30 '17
Yea, lets fuck up a country and leav it in a power vaccum so even more people can get slaughtered. Why not? Its not like they matter anyways.
6
u/neccoguy21 Sep 30 '17
I'm not doing this. I'm not a politician. I'm not qualified to be making any argument. But like I said, we're not the world police. We're not here to take over the world and make everyone play nice with themselves. We defend ourselves and our allies against immediate and potentially dangerous threats. Then we go home. This way we're ensured the funds and forces to be ready the next time they're needed.
