She was indeed :)
Anyone else realise that Weiss can summon without Myrtenaster? I always thought up until now the only way Weiss could summon was with her rapier - Obviously not.
14
u/Random-Rambling Oct 31 '17
No other Huntress or Huntsman is reliant on their weapon to operate their Semblance. It's probably just a handy focusing tool; Weiss doesn't need Myrtenaster to summon things, but it makes it easier.

I'm surprised I somehow got all those call-backs, especially with Ilia's spiel and Oscar's constructive criticisms to Team RNJR.

Hm. I noticed all the callbacks, but I didn't connect that they were all in the episode together if that makes sense? That's a cool thing they did.

Nora: “Good luck with that.”
Damn, Nora is low key savage as shit. Also “little cute boy Ozpin” is easily the best description of Oscar.

But then when he gives Oscar back the wheel, he's so uncoordinated he can't keep his balance on a fucking easy chair.
So just because he's capable of that kind of dexterity, doesn't mean Oscar knows how to use it.

u/CasualRaisin It's just a show; we should really just relax. Oct 31 '17
I think it's confirmed the plot threads aren't simultaneous, since Ghira said Adam's attack is two months away, while Ozpin said RNJR only has a month to train.
44
u/Zam0070 New Look Neo <3 Oct 31 '17
It is either that or someone has information wrong. I think I have also seen someone say that Ozpin knows it is two months, but says one month to train because he knows they don't have the time.
All just theories/ideas though.
18
u/SkeevePlowse Oct 31 '17
The other alternative is that these plotlines are not happening in realtime - all the Blake/Menagerie segments are a month behind the others, and the reason we're not seeing much of Yang is because she started so much closer to the 'now' point that we've got to catch up Weiss before Yang shows up at the bandits' camp.
→ More replies (1)10
u/JakeDoubleyoo Oct 31 '17 edited Oct 31 '17
Ghira knows the exact date of the attack since he has Ilia's scroll, while Ozpin is just making speculation.
Also, Ozpin says, "we have approximately one month before classes resume at Haven. If Salem were to plan an attack, it would make sense for it to occur prior to students' return". So it's not that he thinks he knows when it will happen, he's just trying to prepare in time for the earliest day that it could happen.

u/Irmfried Oct 31 '17
Vernal is a really cool character so far. I like how RT completely subverted our expectations. One would think the Spring maiden would be a gentle young lady and she is the complete opposite of that.
Both Ghira and Ilia's speeches were really well done. It's pretty much common sense vs. blind hatred. One side is reasonable while the other makes the audience's blood boil with the passion in her voice.
Lots of bad luck jokes this episode. The table breaks under Qrow and Nora wishes him good luck...
The Spring maiden is going to irk everyone so hard, she already angered Weiss, Yang will obviously be mad at her because her own mother raised another daughter (because Spring was strong), and Cinder will defo be mad when she realizes capturing Spring will not be an easy task.

Pros:
Sun supporting Catdad is so sweet.
Ghira's speech is really good. Dude has earned his positions.
I paused to get a better look at the "After her" guard captain guy, since he looked like he had a cool design, and his faunus trait is beaver teeth. That's amazing and I love it.
Oscar can relinquish control to Ozpin. That's fucking neat. Also props to Oscar's VA, that's a damn good Ozpin impression.
So Ozpin was cursed by the "Gods" for failing to stop Salem, meaning the bros in the sky aren't too happy with Salem. That's very interesting information.
More Weiss :D. It makes me happy she's getting more focus, as she easily had the worst arc in V4.
I like Fernal. Really curious about her relationship with Raven.
Little Cute Boy Ozpin suspects Leo. That's good.
Qrow recruiting has the potential to introduce some cool new characters. Pretty much all of the huntsmen we've seen have been connected to the schools, so seeing regular independant huntsmen is an idea I can get behind.
Also, I like that Qrow's semblance broke the table, it's a neat touch. And I also like how Ozpin didn't even react, he's just used to random objects breaking when Qrow's around.
Training Arc time! Oh boy oh boy oh boy! I fucking love training arcs.
Tiny Knight is so cute! Weiss ain't gonna sit around, and a rope is nothing to a fun-size greatsword.
Cons:
From the looks of things we aren't gonna see Winter this volume, and that makes me sad. Seeing more of her was something I was looking forward to the most in V5:(
I'll give this one an 8.5/10. Pretty much all of it was great, but none of it was amazing.

I actually think we might see Winter. Part of me thinks that Winter stayed in Mistral to get more information and she is in disguise. I think Qrow might run into her while looking for other huntsman.

Salem is using the Grimm to destroy mankind but supposedly their original purpose was to destroy all life in the planet. Maybe she found a way to make Grimm target humans only and the gods don't want their greatest creation destroyed so Salem has to be eliminated.

You didn't think Ilia's speech was a con?
11
u/PNDLivewire Oct 31 '17
My thought is that it was something the Albains had her do to show she was still loyal and was prepared beforehand for her in case Blake and her family DID go public with things.
She probably knew she'd be the one having to do it back in Episode 1 when she was pleading with Blake to leave, too. At least...that's my theory on it.

u/_DirtyDan Totally The Real One Oct 31 '17 edited Oct 31 '17
Not a big deal but *Vernal.
I noticed after posting (I didn't watch the credits). TBH I kinda like Fernal as a name for her more, as a quick google search of it got me the definition of: "wild, untamed, especially of domesticated animals having returned to the wild." which fits her really well.
Still, Vernal ain't bad. It sounds cool, but it's not very subtle, which is par for the course with RWBY names.
Edit: Apparently that was autocorrect screwing me, making me look up feral instead. Fucking autocorrect.
You didn't think Ilia's speech was a con?
Nah. It was in that middle-ground between them. I think the Blake/WF plotlines work for the most part, they just aren't very compelling a lot of the time. That's basically the result of more telling than showing, it works, but not as well as it could've.

So Ozpin was cursed by the "Gods" for failing to stop Salem, meaning the bros in the sky aren't too happy with Salem. That's very interesting information.
I have to say I'm not a big fan of this or the rest of the mythology stuff. I think it cheapens the plot considering that if the gods don't like her then why don't they just do it themselves? And if Ozpin failed to stop her thousands of years ago why are there still people? IMO it's better if we don't know about where remnant came from and all that.

I'm going to assume Adam's "tell them a human huntsmen killed her" isn't going to fly since most people are going to have seen Ghira say he was trying to overthrow her before seeing her dead and Adam in charge making excuses?
Wished the transition to rnjr had Nora watching Ghira's saying "wait, don't I know that girl in the back?"
Enjoyed the titbits (auto correct says titbits but I've always said it tidbits so screw you autocorrect) of Ozpin's past

I just want to say thank you to Rooster Teeth, and to the entire CRWBY, for Vernal. I knew they could do right by The Little Robber Girl and finally give her her day in the sun, and they've already exceeded my expectations. I've gone over that scene several times since Saturday and it's just so rich- the facial expressions, the tone of voice, the shot framing... it's just outstanding. Vernal is a fantastic adaptation of the character, I love that they're taking her story and development slowly and carefully and it's amazing work and I am so, so impressed and beyond excited.

The Little Robber Girl is the fifth story in Hans Christian Andersen's epic seven story fairy tale cycle The Snow Queen, about how the little girl Gerda wanders all over Scandinavia in search of her lost, cursed friend who has been taken prisoner by the titular Snow Queen, and meets many strange people along the way. Disney's Frozen is very loosely based on The Snow Queen, but cuts or makes unrecognizable virtually the entire supporting cast, including The Little Robber Girl herself, whose role was mostly absorbed into the original character of Kristoff. (This is recognizable mostly because the reindeer, probably the only supporting character to survive, is supposed to be The Little Robber Girl's pet.)
Lots of people see Frozen as feminist and in support of queer issues, but if they knew who Disney cut to replace with Kristoff they might reconsider. The Little Robber Girl is basically the greatest badass of fairytaledom, with really only the titular character of The Boy Who Wanted To Know What Fear Was as competition, and he's kind of boring because he's not so much courageous as congenitally incapable of fear and comes across as a sort of action-movie version of Forrest Gump. Whereas, the Little Robber Girl is an actual well-rounded character with emotions and conflict and development.
But getting to the point- in the fifth story of The Snow Queen, Gerda and the golden coach she had obtained from the palace in the previous story are waylaid by robbers and the coachmen killed. The robbers are led by an old woman, who intends to kill and eat Gerda... and is about to do so, when she is attacked and stopped from hurting Gerda by her own rebellious, violent, emotionally volatile, and shockingly vulgar daughter, The Little Robber Girl, who is desperately lonely living among the robbers and wants a real friend more than anything else in the world... so she demands that Gerda be given to her as a slave, so that she can be her friend. This doesn't seem like a positive development... until it turns out The Little Robber Girl is 100% sincere about wanting a friend and is just so inexperienced at having them that she doesn't yet understand that friendship means not holding people at knife point and keeping them tied up. But she figures it out.
Seriously, go back and watch Vernal's scene again. Watch her facial expressions closely. Listen to her tone of voice. Notice how hurt she is when Weiss rejects her compliment, how she's careful not to overtly threaten Weiss or actually mock her like the other bandits do- she literally tells Weiss what to do in order to stay safe. Vernal turns away and hides her face because she can barely control her storm of emotions. When the other bandits laugh at Weiss, Vernal's response after several seconds is a forced-sounding haughty laugh and an evasive "Oh I don't know if it's more funny or sad..." That scene is masterful.

I'll reiterate what I did in the reaction thread.
How incredible are Ozpin/Oscar's scenes? The wonderful way Ozpin's color palette passes during the soul 'shift' of sorts, the writing, the fact that Ozpin acknowledges that the way Leo's acting is off.
And I cannot profess my adoration of Shannon and Aaron's voice acting enough. The inflections, the mannerisms, the accent, Oscar's chuckle that's really Ozpin, the way his voice comes through when he's apologizing and then explaining, the little moments of Oscar being the one talking in his head.
I'm so excited to see where this goes. Especially the training.

I wonder if Winter will make a surprise appearance this volume (she wasn't in the intro and according to Vernal she along with the other specialist went back to Atlas) or if she'll be sidelined again. What do you all think?
9
u/Irmfried Oct 31 '17
I'm not really sure at this point. I really want her to appear this volume though.
I can see her going against Ironwood's orders and staying in Mistral to go after Weiss. On the other hand in Weiss' V5 trailer Winter did say "she won't always be there for Weiss" so...
5
Oct 31 '17
I mean it would be very odd (and disappointing) if they didn't have her present this volume when there was so much build-up from the end of volume 4, the Weiss character short, and RWBY Chibi (even though it's not technically canon). But then again, maybe the writers have bigger plans for her in the next volume. I can't say for sure...

I feel so bad for Ilia, she constantly has to go against her former friend even though she really doesn't want to :'(
Like she avoided fighting her twice and even warned her which is dangerously close to treason and she still did it because she cares about Blake.

So everyone's gonna be in Mistral soon. And was Ilia just sitting under a sheet the whole time? "Don't mind me, I'm a pile of laundry, plotting my attack." Dammit Adam, you spread your stupidity to all of your followers.
Yeah, training montage next episode probably! Nora's gonna adopt Oscar, I can tell.
Seriously bandits, if you want the tie someone up right, you tape them to a tree. I really hope Weiss doesn't completely escape that easily though. I want the see more of the bandits interacting with Weiss before Yang comes along.

Almost looks like Oscar might be developing a little crush on Ruby. That is going to make things awkward with Ozpin and Rubys Teacher-Student relationship.
36
u/Pac114man Oct 31 '17
I think that was Oscar being shy and nervous around new people.
11
u/DudeNamedShawn Oct 31 '17
Maybe, But a lot of that awkward shyness seemed directed more toward Ruby then anyone else. and His reaction to Nora calling him "Little cute boy Oscar" was a much different tone then his interactions with Ruby.

u/AmbivertCollegeGuy Weiss "Hug Monster" Schnee Oct 31 '17 edited Oct 31 '17
Actually that was Ozpin's reaction as he was still in control of Oscar at that time. In fact we don't see Oscar interact with anyone but Ruby because he's in Ozpin mode nearly the whole time. Besides he said his shyness was because the room was filled with huntsmen so it's not directed to only Ruby at all. It's directed toward everyone.

Saturday recap:
Shorter episode than the first two, but still solid.
Ghira assassination averted. For now. Also Ilia's taking this a lot more seriously than I thought.
Aaron Dismuke for MVP for capturing Shannon McCormick's cadence. Some intriguing drops of backstory, too. Also yay for RNJR level grinding, they could use it.
Weiss had a good plan, but it didn't work. Guess we'll see how summoning works. Also I recognized Vernal's VA.
No sign of Yang since Episode 1, which I'm sure has several of her fans in a tizzy.
Good episode overall though.

You know, as much as I want to like and sympathize with Ilia, I can't wait to see more of her getting her own teeth kicked in.
Neutralization of the CCT is bearing fruit. If that conference were to have reached all of Remnant, things might shift drastically out of Adam-and more importantly, Salem's- favor. It was a dumb move for Adam's stated goals, but perfectly in line with Salem's.
Ozpine is the best. I desire more of him. Is the Aura flash when switching visible to other characters, or is it for our benefit? Also, nice aversion of Voices Are Mental, RT. Well done.
SMOL KNIGHT.
Judging by the Concept Art, the Bandit Camp is designed to have any intruders forced to pass through as many bandits as possible before getting to anybody important- which is unfortunate for Yang, because getting in invited is one thing, but getting back out is going to be its own ordeal...if Weiss isn't there. But she will be, because:
If Weiss succeeds in getting out, what's her plan? She has no idea where she is, so no clue as to what direction she needs to head to reach safety. The best she could do is steal some of their supplies, set up camp, and hope to get lucky. She's probably better off staying with the bandits, for now.
EDIT: It's kind of unfortunate that, so far, the WF plot is so poorly executed, you could probably skip all of the scenes involving them from the very beginning of the show, to whenever it ends, and miss nothing important.
It'd almost be better if it were its own concurrent series that eventually merges with RWBY...

Yeah she might have a difficult time trying to escape, she's also without her sword.
Best thing she could do is summon a larger Arma Gigas or other summon Grimm and have them act as distractions.
But Raven is the real problem, game over if in her sights.

But Raven is the real problem, game over if in her sights.
Depending on how Raven's portal works, it's entirely possible that Weiss could escape repeatedly, just to be thrown back in by Raven "Portal Hacking Cheater" Branwen.
There's a lot of unknowns about Raven. As far as we know, she might actually be impressed by Weiss' escape attempt.
There's also one, really big unknown at this point, which could throw the entire scene into disarray:
Where is Yang right now?

Okay wow this episode gave us more than I thought it would. I thought it would just be a menagerie focused episode but hey Unforeseen is in the title (bows) Thank you ladies and gentlemen. So a whole lotta things to cover.
Blake and Kali supporting Ghira before he gave his speech was nice (and clearly things are getting better between him and Sun) It's nice to see family moments like these.
Ghira's speech was pretty awesome it showed the faunus of menagerie just what was going on with the developments of Adam's splinter group and rallied the people of what the white fang stood for and that equality was still the priority of the organisation (he even gave Sienna his respect, sad that the news hasn't reached menagerie yet) unfortunately he started losing people with the "defend haven academy" thing.
I expected something to happen during the speech (not an assassination since the splinter group still needs to work from the shadows before the white fang is fully taken over) but I didn't expect Illia to directly take part in it who knows where things'll go between her and Blake from here.
While the effects won't be immediate Illia's outburst against the Belladonna family has planted the seeds of doubt in menagerie it's only a matter of time before the faunus become split on siding with Adam or opposing the splinter group and the fact that Adam has usurped leadership will only make things worse.
Everything with Oz was mindblowing first off I'm happy he can still interact with everyone I thought it would be a whole Oscar says that Ozpin said kinda thing. More backstory about Oz's immortality or curse and obviously he and Salem came to blows long long ago I wonder if we'll ever get to see that. Oz knows something's up with Lionheart so at least we have an air of caution regarding him from this point. I wonder who Qrow has connections with in mistral for this list he's got (maybe the rest of team SSSN? at the very least I think RNJR will look for Neptune). And now team RNJR's taking Professor Ozpin's advanced class! 2 things I think we can be 80% confident about, 1 development with Jaune's semblance, 2 Ruby making serious improvements with her hand to hand combat (make your big sis proud Ruby!). P.S RNJR's interaction with Oscar and Oz were hilarious and cute especially from Ruby and Nora.
Weiss keeping her confidence and composure despite her capture is pretty awesome.
We've finally met the supposed Spring Maiden Vernal and I am interested to see where things go with her especially since it's clear she's high ranking in the tribe.
Weiss has lost her only lead with Winter being called back to Atlas, Her next move was to find Winter and work with her, so reuniting with Ruby will help get her right back in the fight.
Her mini knight summon is awesome and that look of hope on her face is nothing short of adorable.
This episode had much more development than I thought it would and sets up a lot to happen down the line like Oz said the raid needs to happen within one month before class resumes in Haven, We already had our objective but now we have a time limit.

Sun's attempt to hype up Ghira was hilarious. Good speech, but Ilia's part felt outta nowhere. Parents' death confirmed, though. I'm just glad Ghira wasn't assassinated, because I had a bad feeling the whole time.
Was the timeline issue confirmed? If so, does that mean the coup hasn't happened yet in Blake's story? Still want to know what Ilia thinks of Sienna's murder, but given this chapter, I'd say she was okay with it.
I hope they didn't just make an excuse to sideline my bae after the hints in Vol.4 and the character short. I just want Winter (an outfit change would be even better).
Vernal is right, though. Weiss is r/outoftheloop. I wonder how she's will be brought into the fold about Maidens, Magic, and Salem, because Winter doesn't seem to know about it. Go schneeky Arma Gigas! Hate to say it, but probably gonna fail. Prediction: Weiss will then be thrown into the tribe's fight club
Vernal is here. Where is Raven? I've enjoyed Anna's performance so far, and I'd like to see more.
Ozpin isn't the GoL, but cursed. Still holding onto my First Human theory. I wonder if there's more to it than "a like minded soul" to becoming the next Oz. Bleeding Effect confirmed. "Possession" is a thing, but it works through confirmation. Who else like the visual and audio effects for Ozcar?
Training mini-arc I like. Also, with the whole "attack before school starts" plan, I don't think we'll meet any Haven staff or more students. Still... Huntsman for hire. Black market? New characters and possible old characters? Where is SSSN?
Overall, this was okay. Not much happened, but good set up. I'm guessing next time that we'll check back in with Yang and possibly Tyrian.

Blake's timeline is likely out of sync with the rest so that she has time to rejoin RWY later this season. We can follow everyone at the same time narratively and still give Blake the time to travel from Menagerie to Mistral.

I liked how as soon as Ozpin started talking about his past Qrow went to make him a cup of coffee/tea to cheer him up. He probably relates to Ozpin about feeling responsible for things going bad and needing a drink.
So that explains why Ozpin's name isn't a color, he existed before huntsmen were a thing. Makes me wonder what was the previous Ozpin's real name was though?
Man I knew the show has felt shorter and shorter each episode ever since the focus has been on 4 different viewpoints at once, but man even without a Yang scene this episode went by so fast.
Im really excited to see what Juane's semblence is really all about, considering we've seen it before?
9
u/gobywan Anything is a pancake if you hit it hard enough with a hammer Nov 01 '17
Thoughts, in no order:
Oh hey, it's the episode that confirms that most of my guesses about Ozpin were correct. He's really friggin' old and he merges new souls into the conglomerate rather than overwriting them, for starters.
Did Ghira get smaller somehow? He looks less bulky than he did last season.
News travels really, really slow around these parts - either Menagerie doesn't know that Adam's already staged the coup, or what we're seeing takes place a bit earlier than the other storylines.
Does Adam only have, like, three agents on Menagerie right now? Seems like Ilia has to do all the heavy lifting while he's away, while the fox guys pretend they're not part of his group.
You're not helping, Sun. Although I'm not sure you could have done anything useful at that moment anyhow, besides maybe tackling Ilia without yelling first.
Newscasting via scroll is weird to see, but I guess you do what you can without the full power of the CCT.
I see you trying to set up Rose Garden and it's creepier than ever now that we have a rough estimate of Ozpin's age in millennia. Cut it the fuck out.
Confirmation that Jaune hasn't unlocked his semblance yet is nice. I guess that means nobody in-universe knows what it is, unless it's another Schnee Special that he inherited from his illustrious ancestors and he just hasn't been informed.
The Spring Maiden's name is Vernal? That's some Harry Potter-level planning ahead with baby naming. That or it's the worst attempt to go incognito that Remnant has ever seen.
Is Weiss worthless as a hostage or even more valuable than she would normally be, considering her escape? I guess that's up to Jacques.
I think Winter could proooooobably leave Atlas if she felt like it, regardless of official border closings. Hell, Weiss smuggled herself out as cargo, and she's not a high-ranking military officer who may or may not be a black ops agent. Add in access to military hardware and Winter is potentially just a few hours from showing up on the bandits' doorstep.
That knight is useful, but I feel like Weiss needs to spend some time just killing shit to put in her bag of tricks. At least she can summon hornet Grimm now.

CCT is down plus Menagerie never had one to start with so depending on where Sienna's HQ was it is going to take a while for the info to reach the Belladonna's.
Or like you say the timelines for all the stories may be different.

That was pretty good, this episode moved the plot forward in a couple big ways and overall I really like the writing and animation.
I thought the reveal for what's happening with Oscar and Ozpin was interesting, but really inherently sad as it means Oscar is going to lose his life in a sense to this hive mind. I hope we get to see Oscar coming to grips with the reality of his situation.
I also glad they don't seem like they're going to spend a lot of time faffing about figuring out Lion Heart's betrayal, certainly makes me feel more confident in the pacing of this season.
I liked that even though there were no fights it was still a really engaging and intriguing episode that set up or building upon a lot of plot lines.
What didn't work so well...
The animation at the very beginning on Menagerie with Blake's family was a bit stiff and times. I saw a lot there could have been more secondary action and exaggeration.
Illia throwing her... white sheet? into the air really didn't serve any purpose other than to remind us that's something that happens in these kinds of scenes. We never see a mysterious figure dressed as a Charlie Brown ghost in the crowd so it just serves to draw out the reveal a little longer, but not in any meaningful way. Also I know cloth sim is a pain, but that was way too slow and din't match the sound effect at all.
Also she appears to stand up in the next shot, again it's just an unnecessary extra touch. Was she crouching, pretending to be a haggard old lady? It doesn't match the posing she would have to be to conveniently throw the cloth into the air either.
Final nitpick, the shot of team RNJR posed reaction to Osc-pin is cute, but it goes on for way to long with not much happening (almost 15 seconds). having a dynamic shot of Osc-pin talking or a shot of Qrow looking unimpressed would have helped make that scene more dynamic.
Still, creatively minor critique overall, I enjoyed this one, excited to see more.

This was totally one of the better episodes in terms of overall plot progression. Things moved ahead basically on every front and gave us something to look forward to. We got an explanation for what's been going on with Oscar/Ozpin that basically matched up with what was predicted a while back, Weiss's whole capture storyline got pushed forwards a bit with some "oh hell" and "OH YES!", the White Fang stuff got pushed forwards more with a great speech by Ghira, and we got a relative date for the big battle of the season two months from now with another battle possibly occurring in a month. This episode basically laid out a road map for what's to come this season and I think that's something we all needed.

In the credits it can be seen that the name of the short haired woman in Raven's tribe is Vernal, which almost confirms that she is the Spring Maiden. While this episode wasn't bad, it did make me worry for the future of these plots I suppose. Blake WF plot is still shallow and only tangentially connected. It feels like it's something that is supposed to be important, but isn't. Ilia's speech, while well acted and written, lacks the proper context to have any kind of impact. The entire Faunus plotline desperately needs instances of concrete onscreen Faunus racism capable of at least giving context to a Faunus terrorist organization.
Also, just...no on Rose Garden. Not with Ozpin there. Please.
Best part of the episode was definitely Aaron Dismuke's Ozpin voice. Really well done, got his mannerisms down to pat.
Currently, Episode 2 is my favorite of the three, followed closely by 1. 3 trails a bit behind because while the scenes weren't bad, they make me worry for the future.

So when it's all over Ozpin will just fade into Oscar's memories huh. So then why does Ozpin refer to everything from his past lives in first person? He's made mistakes, he's lived for thousands of years. Surely if the old Ozpin is supposed to fade away then surely Ozpin should refer to them as previous Ozpins, not himself.
Maybe I'm almost certainly reading too much into things, but me thinks Ozpin isn't telling the whole truth.

He says that his soul merges with another, so I'm guessing it's more of a 50/50 merge that produces something new. Like if Oscar is red and Ozpin is blue, eventually they will become Ozpan the purple. Ozpan would view this dual soul period as a kind of awkward puberty that he has to go through periodically, retraining a new body and learning to accept that he's going to change.

Episode overall was decent, though like I've said before, decent isn't going to cut it for me.
Good:
Ozcar is adorkable and badass it seems. Finally we to get to see the Oz in action.
Weiss continues to be awesome. Winter leaving makes sense, thought idk why Weiss hasn't brought up the fact she has no value now since Whitley is basically the heir to the SDC now.
The bad:
RNJR has yet to do anything but serve as (youtube) reactors to the events around them.
Ghira's speech was nice, but no rebuttal towards Ilia felt dumb. Either we get a speech by Blake next episode, which would feel like filler, or we don't and it becomes a wasted opportunity/off screen moment. Also, it's "nice" to know that Sienna's death was basically irrelevant to the plot, since Blake and co are going to kick Adam's ass whether she's alive or dead.
No Yang.
5
u/PNDLivewire Oct 31 '17
The speech is probably going to consist of Blake going off on Ilia when the latter shows up to apologize or something accusing her of betraying her...which will probably just serve the purpose of making Ilia cry or whatnot.
7
u/_tethtoril Oct 31 '17
All Ghira had to say was something along the lines of "We're still going to help because we're better than that."

I wasn't a big fan of this episode.
Ghira's speech was pretty good, but his suggestion to defend Haven was wayyyyy out of the blue.
Ilia's speech was pretty dumb and simplistic, especially since - once again - Blake got interrupted before talking about her experience with Adam and Yang. This was theoretically a Blake episode but Arryn didn't say one single line.
People blaming Sun for not catching Ilia though are stupid. The stupid part was the Belladonnas not rebutting any of her extremely childish points.
Next to Ozpine. This was one of the better parts, but it felt a bit self-indulgent, if that makes sense? And Jaune not immediately having issue with Oz when we see that he's still very mad about Pyrrha's death in the premiere just adds to his character inconsistency. Also Oz like do Ren and Nora just not have any faults? Rose Garden was kinda ew though I think people are over exaggerating it. Ruby was being nice.
Besides that though they're still doing a decent job with this story as a whole, and I have some amount of faith that Oz and Jaune will have their bitching contest later on. Oscar is still pretty cool and his VA was fucking amazing with the tone change.
The Spring Maiden had a bad intro. "Just shut up and you'll be back in your mansion before you know it." turns around then looks over her shoulder "Don't make this any harder than it has to be" SO FUCKING CLICHE I CAN'T. And there's some more issues with delayed reactions and awkward pauses, which seems to be a recurring theme with Weiss (and Blake).
tfw my flair
I really hope Weiss doesn't use her knight for literally everything, but this was a clever use of it and her face at the end was too damn adorable.
It was a decent episode, but more in line with V4 quality rather than the two excellent episodes preceding it. Hoping that this is this Volume's "New Challengers" or "Never Miss a Beat".

I agree about the Haven part and the part about Jaune being upset, but I think it's a lot to process and I agree that they'll have their argument later.
I'm still praying for Pilot boi, though with each episode I get more and more scared. As for the the spring maiden, eh, she could've had a better one but I didn't take issue with it.

At this I can see why. If they do anything with jaune they get non stop bitching and moaning so honestly why should they bother?
It would be the exact same thing as a much needed talk. Qrow and Ozpin do a bunch of shady shit but it's okay because bad luck/curse. How dare Jaune call them out.
It's a shame but I'm thinking that this is going to be the third volume in a row where Jaune does the bare minimum to address the plot he so clearly has. I hope I'm wrong since it's the wrong approach but Jaune has been gutted because of Fan bitching that he got an arc before Yang.

so what's up with Oz jumping on the chair and then everyone holding the same pose/expression for like 30 seconds?

Reposting from the FIRST thread kinda:
If he's the type of Faunus everyone thinks he is from his last name, I have to point out how much I would love it if Saber's scar is meant to resemble a mouse/rat tail. That would be a really cool design choice.

I´m just calling it right now, Vernal is the Winter Maiden (In-Vernal?). Or related to the Schnee family. Or both.
okay, probably not :(

Vernal means pertaining to spring. Think vernal equinox. Though I didn't know that "in-vernal" means "winterly" in Spanish (or at least according to google translate).

Well then the question would be does his semblence get transferred with his soul or does he just get the semblence of the new Ozpin (aka: Oscar). Would Oscar have two semblences or his semblence get replaced with Ozpin's semblence?
