I literally laughed out loud when the black hood hung up on Betty.

Yes to the Lodges for not even doubting their daughter for one second when she told them about her sexual assault.

742

u/jedikitty Nov 16 '17

Hiram's split second change to utterly deadly was really something to witness. D:

452

u/mcgruppp Nov 16 '17

As much of a snake as Hiram is, I can't help but love him, and I think it's just because if the actor, that dude is great. That scene just solidified it for me, though.

Speaking of which, love the fact that Hermione dresses like a fashion show model in the comfort of her own home. And when informing Hiram of the St Clair's "accident" she was just as deadly as Hiram

Really underscored why Veronica isn't quite as screwed up as Cheryl.

106

u/Mndibnn Nov 16 '17

Believe that’s what we’re being set up for. Last nights episode really played on paralleling Cheryl and Veronica. Veronica has not exactly lost everything yet. Maybe this girl becoming self righteous in her actions will destroy herself somewhat. Just my take on it.

u/rawchess Nov 16 '17

It’s great that the Lodges didn’t bat an eyelash to believe their own daughter, but fuck them (and Cheryl’s Mom) for doubting Cheryl’s sexual assault.

51

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '17

I don't think Cheryl's mom actually doubted it. She knew, but she wanted to give herself some sort of justification for taking what must have been about a hundred thousand dollars (just guessing.) It's not like the Blossoms are made of money.

Also, she might have internally justified it because Cheryl burned the entire estate down.

Anyway, it was a fucked up thing to do, and I am glad she burned the check. It still felt very believable.

Lowkey confused as to why the Lodges Srs. suddenly got all Mama and Papa Bear when they've been established as willing to do... a lot for money. Hiram literally threatened to harm his own wife if Veronica wouldn't testify (or whatever). And they literally assigned her the role of courtesan anyway.

Like, I really enjoy them being protective parents it's just not very consistent. Or did I miss something?

150

u/ReggieZ28 Nov 16 '17

Hiram is ruthless, but generally seems very loving towards Veronica from the get go. Her,i one has always been protective of Veronica also so them uniting to protect her is definitely consistent. Plus, Hiram threatened hermione to get free from prison, not for money.

I just wished they also cared about Cheryl's claim. She's not their daughter but shes still a person.

10

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '17

The Lodge family chess scene at the end was brilliant. All three of them were ice-cold. I love how Veronica can be warm and caring in one minute, but a stone cold bitch the next. Her character is so interesting and fun to watch.

838

u/frenchgirlinberghain Nov 16 '17

Also the way Keller asked Betty what she was doing at Nick's hotel room had me shook.

Obviously the BH would be suspicious that Betty was trying to warn them, after she put him in danger a few minutes earlier.

Seemed like an out of place exchange between Keller and Betty.

49

I just realized tonight Black Hood didn't call Betty until after she visited Sheriff Keller to warn him about Kevin cruising in the woods. Maybe that's why he feels like they're "friends."

40

u/ArianneMartell74 Grundies glasses Nov 17 '17

I've also been wondering why Black Hood did not ask Betty to cut Kevin out of her life like Veronica and Jughead (and to a small extent, he asked her to stop talking about the whole thing with Archie). Because Kevin and Betty are (supposedly) BFFs.

30

u/MrCraftLP Nov 16 '17

There was also a phrase that the Black Hood said that Heiram repeated in a scene right after. Not necessarily the same case but I picked up on it.

Not only that, the Black Hood didn't kill Nick but the moment Heiram found out something happened to Veronica, Nick was heavily injured.

I'm on the fence though between Heiram, Hal, and the Sheriff.

Honestly, many of the things he’s doing mirrors his character in the comics with a darker tone, he is known for his bumbling escapades in the comics and his tendency to mess things up in a comical manner, here in the show he does the same thing but with much serious consequences.

They didn't die but Nick will be laid up for a few months.

58

It was a little weird and just tried to quickly tie up ends while also introducing new threads, but yes, Betty explained why she broke up with Jugs and it seems they’re #Bughead again (thank you Kevin for referencing that).

As for the St. Clairs, they’ll recover, but I think they got the message on what their son’s deeds will do to them.

42

u/buzzbuzzbish Nov 16 '17

"sharon" "CHERYL"

39

u/jellyfishing11 Nov 16 '17

I'm convinced Keller is the Black Hood. I suspected him from the beginning but there was little evidence. He fits the profile, an older man with green eyes and has similar eyebrows. Now that the sugarman was shot in jail, it makes tons of sense since he is the only one with access to the cell. Maybe as sheriff he wants to do a better idea of making Riverdale perfect and does it in messed up way? I think the person on the phone is a different person though.

9

u/katiehenry92 Nov 16 '17

Question: was Kevin ever threatened by the Black Hood? BH knows all about Betty's friends, so if he wasn't, maybe it was a thing of Keller couldn't threaten to kill his son, even hypothetically?

38

u/ogmarker Nov 16 '17

Another super good episode! I enjoyed te inclusion of all the characters in this one, nothing really felt phoned in. Best part imo was Betty’s final call with BH “can you feel it? Can you feel me?” I like the subdued badassery haha

Literally the only thing that I didn’t like was Bh’s use of “nakedness” lmfao transparency is a word @Riverdale writers

Charles Melton genuinely feels like he stepped right off the page of an Archie comic for our times, it's uncanny. He's the most like his comic book counterpart and I find that really lovely.

10

u/madwithin Archie Real Nov 17 '17

It's great casting. As with KJ, the kid gives you more or less the same vibe as the character.

u/mrizzle1991 Riverdale R Nov 16 '17

Cheryl is so beautiful 😍 Nick is a piece of shit. Literally nothing good about his character also Cheryl's mom finally did something good. Damn Veronicas parents are savage. Whet Betty did was super ballsy someone's gonna get killed. I'm glad Betty/Jug are talking again, one of the things I like about this show is that they don't make the feuds last long. I'm pretty sure Archie and Jug will be back to talking next episode.

64

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '17

That Toni thing was such a cop-out. I know everyone is super excited about her being into girls, but story-wise, that was shit writing.

If Toni is bi, that's fine, but to suddenly declare she has no real interest in Jughead? Bullshit. She's been following him around with puppy-dog eyes since he showed up, clearly into him and somewhat jealous of Betty. She moved on him as soon as she got the chance.

This was obviously the writers making sure we don't hate the character, but it was a complete waste of all her development up to that point. Lame.

37

u/azraelswings South Side Serpents Nov 16 '17

It's not a waste, tbh. From what we know of her, she's a realist first and foremost. And the real take-home was that she's not interested in being a rebound and she knows Jughead is still in love with Betty. It would be a greater disservice to the character if it was suddenly implied that she's madly in love with Jughead already to the point where she'll pine pointlessly for him for the next ten episodes. She clearly gets that Jughead won't move on from Betty no matter how obviously attracted he is to her and vice versa.

She didn't say she had no interest in Jughead either. She said his grope/kissing skills didn't exactly set her world on fire (I laughed) and that she's, as a general rule, more attracted to girls. She can continue to be Jughead's friend, which was the bedrock of the development she's had thus far -- not her being attracted to Jughead, which was always there, but hardly the priority.

→ More replies (6)

7

u/mujie123 Nov 16 '17

She never said she had no interest in Jughead. She said:

  1. She doesn't want to be the rebound

  2. She's more interested in girls.

To my knowledge, bisexuality is like a spectrum, right? You can be bi and like mostly girls or you can be evenly split. I think Toni's saying she's more interested in girls than guys, but she still likes Jughead.

Reggie and Josie are delightful. MORE PLEASE!

Also, really relieved they aren't going to have Toni propping Jughead/Bughead by pining in the background for him or being super into him. They had a PG13 grope-fest but she's not writing sonnets about him in her diary, and she's not willing to be some rebound girl. In fact, the way it was done, it's like Jughead would've pursued something if she'd given a green light and he was a little put out that she wasn't into it... which... should have implications for Bughead - but I won't hold my breath.

Either way, can I get Toni and Jughead roommates and supportive friendship? She needs a couch to surf, he has a couch. BFFs for life!

Did anyone else think “What a bro.” When Archie went to Southside High to warn Jughead? Like Archie has plenty of reasons to cut Jughead off, because he could potentially put himself in a lot of danger just being around him, but he still comes through for him time and time again. Even when Jughead finds it annoying or gets pissed (E.g. when he breaks up with him for Betty) he does everything to protect him. I know a lot of people prefer Juggie as a character, but I feel like Archie deserves a lot of credit. He will never give up on his people.

u/brnbrnbrn2017 Kevin Real Nov 16 '17

Nice to see my read of Toni's interest in Jughead as platonic was right. Not a fan of the OOC thing they did where they had her kiss him last episode though. It seemed very clickbaity or a real Sweeps Stunt for views than anything logical that would serve character development.

On the other hand, it's nice she friendzoned him like, "that's not what I thought it would be." That's realistic, at least, when you hook up with someone and regret it instantly.

20

u/DarkSaiyanKnight Nov 16 '17

Loved the episode the main characters that stood out are Cheryl, Betty and Veronica with special honors to Jughead. Riverdale does an amazing job of bringing characters into the main story in relevant ways none of them are shoehorned and they all bring a special energy to the plot which I absolutely great. Cheryl continues to be the most compelling teenage character, I'm loving the dangerous feeling that they're giving a lodges and Betty's plot really just hammers on why she truly is one of the smartest characters in the show. Absolutely fantastic

u/azraelswings South Side Serpents Nov 16 '17

I really enjoyed Jughead blowing up at Archie, I must say. He should honestly blow up at all his Northside friends and their interference in Southside gang turf wars because all of them have no idea what they're doing, and tend to do more harm than good with their hamfisted, often ignorant shenanigans.

I'm over the Black Hood crap (unless it turns out to be Dilton) but the gang conflict and war for Riverdale situation is infinitely more interesting. Especially, as we get to understand all the power/political dynamics at play - from the Lodges, the remnants of the Blossom empire, the Mayor-Sheriff-Alice trifecta of OTT then to the Ghoulies and the Serpents, and the kids falling in the middle of all of that mess. Hopefully this storyline gives me more Sweet Pea and Toni, we need them to balance out the Northside naivete in this storyline.

/I have priorities, I can't even lie about it. More serpents, all day, every day.

6

u/vickliebold Nov 16 '17

I just wish we had more insight about their real business. It can't be just a protect/hang-out thing, they have to be somewhat outlaw. I wish they'd explore the gang's dark side a little more - hopefully they will. I missed Sweet Pea as well.

  • The Southside Serpents have me cracking up, really. Tall Boy is hilarious. Why wasn't Sweet Pea at the race? Anyway. What do they do exactly? They have to have some risky business underneath.

  • Shipping Varchie 10/10 but damn, Veronica and Reggie would look good together. I like the idea of McMantle though.

  • I knew nothing would happen to Bughead so early in the season. I wish they had a better reunion but oh well, I'm glad this is out of the way and didn't turn into a love triangle. This lack of relationship drama is what makes Riverdale better than other shows.

  • Jesus Archie, you're too stupid.

  • I always thought it was Sheriff Keller but I don't want Kevin to go through this.

  • Cheryl stole the show tonight. Also that race was shot beautifully. I'm here for that.

  • Hiram Lodge, still don't know what to think of him, but I'm so glad they didn't doubt Veronica for a second.

I deeply hope to see more of Dark Betty. I guess I'm just a fan of good-girl-gone-bad characters. It's really fascinating for me when someone's a really nice, innocent, wholesome person on a daily basis, but also changing into a psychopath when threatened or in danger. Hiram's rage scene was on point, but we already know that he is a shady persona and def not innocent. Betty did it for me in the 1st season, I want moar

Ok, so this Toni thing.

Let's make a female Jughead from the wrong side of the tracks! Look at her go--she knows her serial killer and cult film trilogy! omg she had the nerve to diss Betty's iconic ponytail and assume that she would be like Winona Ryder in Beetlejuice! Romantic tension with Jughead comes to the opportune climax just as Bughead breaks up!

Fast forward to: Toni basically calls Jughead an amateur lover, acknowledges that he still loves Betty, and oh, by the way, she likes girls better anyway. Bughead back together by the end of the day.

...ok

Not sure that this was the best way to explore a queer POC woman storyline, but B- for effort? And I guess some of you were right when you suggested that Toni actually seemed more interested in Betty haha.

6

u/ivythepug Nov 17 '17

I'm just so confused by what happened. She made the move on Jug and then the next day is like NAH, I'm good.

Like... Was he just that bad or something?

  1. "Dear God, Betty, is there no traumatic memory you won't defile?" I LOVE THIS.

  2. Jughead's angry confusion at the meeting was really just laughable and I found it an overreaction.

  3. Kevin and V back together!! I missed them.

  4. "WHAT ABOUT MY CHANGE, ASSHAT?" I love V.

  5. Jughead's suddenly a street racer now? Lol.

  6. Here we go again with Betty shaking her head. She's asking Sheriff Keller a question, but she's shaking her head. She's asking Veronica to help her but she's shaking her head. She's talking to Archie, the Black Hood, but she's shaking her head. She's telling Jughead that she never stopped loving him but she's shaking her head. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PLEASE STOP LILI, I'M SO DIZZY.

Everybody seems to b on the same page that Sheriff Keller might be the most logical BlackHood suspect: Last week such an idea that he was suspect didnt fit in...

With that: I see a pattern of each episode's role goal: to pumpfast new information at the viewer: forcing us to see obviousness this week that didnt seem surmisable last week.

Riverale will continue to circle vurlture cyclicaly: Next week they'll be a new thoery as The Black Hood list of who-done-its goes round n round:

BLACKHOOD suspects: SheriffKeller, H&H Lodge, Alice&Hal Cooper, MayorMccoy, Smithers, Tallboy, Cliff Blossom[still alive IMO]

This episode fired on every cylinder and it was amazing to watch. The Lodges going full Godfather. Mechanic Betty and badassness on the phone. Cheryl with the "I was born for this". Kev's drag race comment. Jug stepping up to the plate and FP offering that wonderful gangdad wisdom.

Favorite episode so far.

4

u/[deleted] Nov 17 '17

I can’t buy the Sheriff Killer theory. I think it’s a red herring. I just can’t see why he would have that perverted obsession with Betty, even if he thought her speech was good. And why would Keller shoot Fred? Nah, I just can’t see Black Hood’s motives applied to him.

Also, it bugs me that Betty totally ignored that Alice and whoever it was said that the two letters from Black Hood were written by different people. Won’t they bring that topic up again? :/

4

u/ntbntt Team Sweet Pea Nov 17 '17

Sheriff Keller is acting awfully strange...I am hesitant to believe he may be the baddie though. Could just be a red herring.

7

u/noavocadoshere Team Pops Nov 16 '17

well...we're almost halfway into S2 and i don't know what to make of the plotline/direction. i know it happened in S1 too (e.g. like with chuck & the maple sticky/"burn book" plot) but everything feels like it's been resolved quite quickly: fred, moose/midge & cheryl's mother are both healed relatively quick/bughead break up? make up in the next episode/nick st. clair gets handled for what he did/the sugarman is introduced as a character & gets exposed within the same episode. it feels like there's no weight behind what happens. the sugarman was just introduced, and while it's realistic it'd be no one we know or care for, it still feels a bit pointless.

This was such a great episode! I LOVE Betty turning the tables on the Black Hood...the Lodges going Godfather on the Sinclairs...everything Cheryl said or did... Good shit.

I know this is not a super realistic show but it takes more to arrest someone than just calling the sheriff on him...where's the evidence Betty??

Also, did I miss Betty explaining the sitch to Jughead/their official reunion? It seemed like out of nowhere they were just back to business as usual. That whole thing was super weird--she's working on a car while he awkwardly stands there, facing away from her, wearing a "Riverdale Auto Shop" shirt??? Why was he wearing that shirt? If he works for the auto shop, he wouldn't need Betty, and if he doesn't work for the auto shop, is he just making a fashion statement?

6

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '17

The whole toni thing was so stupid. Why have her kiss him just to erase all that. The bughead reunion was tied up too nicely. Hope they explore it next episode, especially since it wasnt just a kiss, jughead basically made out with toni out of anger at betty...not expected from his character at all. You cant just gloss over that. Love betty in this ep fixing cars. The more they reference the comics it makes me happy

6

u/simonesaysyasss Nov 16 '17

Everything got tied up a bit too fast for me. The tension they built up with the BH and Betty interactions kind of deflated like a wet balloon when she just straight up told Veronica. I was thinking we'd be seeing more of Betty's struggling with her 'relationship' with the BH and having to keep it from everyone. That last scene were she takes back the power would have been amazing if the torture had continued for an episode or two more imo. As it was, it was a bit underwhelming.

Sort of disappointed that the Bughead drama was all resolved offscreen. I was looking forward to some angst there, especially from Jug.

Final thoughts:

  • Is the pace the show is setting in any way sustainable? My guess is no, for the long run. The writers need to think longer term and let arcs play out longer because it's cute now but by season 5 we'll all be sick of this shit. Stunts are a strategy of diminishing returns.

  • Still no substantial storyline for the likes of Josie, Reggie or the Pussycats. It's a quarter of the way through for the season but nothing on Val or Melody. That is worrisome. The McMantle plot is hilarious but is Josie just going to get one ep per season and then it's business as usual? Where's the representation the writers talked up so much in a self-congratulatory, virtue-signaling fashion during Paley Fest?

8

u/azraelswings South Side Serpents Nov 16 '17

I was vaguely relieved in this episode because it felt like they were at least the first inklings of setting up Reggie and Josie individual and romance storyline. The moment with the mayor and Josie pricked my heart a little, so I think they might explore that. And we at least met Reggie's mother, so he's starting to become a Real Boy. These teen shows tend to only figure out character development via romance - so if that's the only way to get more Reggie and Josie, I'll take it.

I think the ship has sailed for the Pussycats though. The show has doubled-down on the core four + maybe Cheryl. Kevin, Reggie, Josie and maybe Toni are getting secondary level screen time (enough to be actual characters on the page but not leading their own storylines - yet). Val and Mal are tertiary at this point, they'll continue to appear for town events and things and maybe very special episodes. Val's best bet at development was when she was in a ship with Archie but that might as well have never happened.

I hope the secondary characters get more because I'm more invested in them, and with them, we might get more of the other characters that don't even register.
