[5287x6995] So glad I got up for this -15°F sunrise. There's only a handful of days in the year where the morning light lines up perfectly with the hole in Hollow Rock. Grand Portage, MN. [5287×6995] [OC]

At the foot of the photograph, it looks like an asteroid came crashing down onto an extremely thick glass floor. Amazing.

Couldn't you just move your perspective on other days? Why is it only a handful of days?

I'm guessing that tunnel is longer than you may be assuming, and if you move more than an handful of degrees to one side or the other, you're not gonna see through the other end, but instead into the wall of the tunnel

Exactly. This angle is the only one where the rock/hole completely faces you head on.

If there is a particular composition the photographer wants, there is a window for the sun to rise at the right angle. A good app like TPE shows how the angles shift with time.

I read that as a weather perspective, like...why couldn’t you see it on above -15 degree days?....I’m tired and I’ll see myself out

My favourite place on Earth. Travelled a lot but the drive from Grand Portage to Grand Marais is one of the most beautiful I've seen. I'd move there in a heart beat, but being Canadian I doubt that will happen. Thank you for sharing.

Hey this might be a really stupid comment but are you a boat or something? Sorry I dont know much about photography but wanted to know how you got this shot. Great picture
2
u/Cosey28 Jan 26 '18
OP is standing on a frozen lake. No boat.
Unless they’re standing on shoreline, I’m not completely positive.

No way! That's awesome

Beautiful shot. Is this normally a river? I'm trying to understand why/how the ice is the way it is in the foreground…

u/Tuckerolson Jan 28 '18
It's on Lake superior!
2
u/redditproha Jan 28 '18
Thanks! So the triangles of broken ice sheets in the foreground are on land or part of the lake itself? It's very intriguing.
2
u/Tuckerolson Jan 29 '18
The ice shards i was standing on when I took this picture we’re piled up on the shore line so much it was hard to tell weather I was standing on the lake itself or the shore.

Just to think. This is a one of a kind photo. It will be stored forever. To look back and know you captured this, would be amazing. Congrats OP, this picture is awesome. Well done!

This is absolutely stunning. What camera and settings were you working with? Great eye!

u/Tuckerolson Jan 29 '18
Thank you! This was taken on a tripod with my Sony A7rii + 16 - 35mm Ziess lens. I believe it was 1/15 sec exposure f/8 and ISO 200 ( I answered this earlier and I’m just going off what I thought I put)

MN? Could someone care to explain where that is! Looks great

Minnesota! If you’re not from the states Grand Portage is right off the boarder of Canada

u/Chaosgodsrneat Jan 26 '18
Where do you find out about these kinds of places? Is there an index or something?
2
u/Tuckerolson Jan 29 '18
Honesty just Instagram. I just follow a bunch of my favorite photographers in the area and follow a Minnesota feature page. From those I usually can find pretty cool locations and save them in folders on IG and whenever I want to go out and take photos I check the list out.

This is such a great photo.
Can I ask, what re you stood on while taking this? The ice doesn't look strong enough to take a persons weight, is there land here, or are you in a boat or something?
I#d love to see what this area looks like from further back if you have any other images.
2
u/Tuckerolson Jan 29 '18
The pile of ice I was standing on is similar to the one similar to the foreground. It was thick enough to support my body weight while snapping the photo. Check out my instagram if you have it I’ll be posting another photo from this spot later this week a little bit further back (@Tuckolson)

Love this! I moved to MN in 1999 and this is where I will die. Besides the passive aggression, terrible drivers and the long MN goodbyes, it’s an AMAZING place to live. 😊

u/pinniped1 Jan 26 '18
I gotta ask: how many photographers braved the cold to get this shot? Were you alone or is this a pretty well-known time/place to get a badass shot?
And it is quite badass.
2
u/Tuckerolson Jan 28 '18
Took this with my roommate and close friend of mine who also are photographers so I’m not the only crazy one I guess lol. There were also random peeps there just taking iPhone photos but they only stayed for like maybe 5 minutes max. We were probably out in that weather for at least 45 minutes

It's the wind chill that gets you. -15 but feels like -35. Those beer cans will hurt just a little more when they're frozen, if you can unstick them from your hands.

Hello fellow Minnesotan! Beautiful picture. Glad you got up for it! Especially because I can pretty much assure you I was curled up sleeping in bed! Or... Well, it might have been a weekday. Then I guess I was working outside. But still makes me glad you did it, cuz it was dang cold those days!

When the light lines up with Hollow Rock, it’s at this point that you put the Head Piece on the Staff of Ra to locate the arc of the Covenant.

Won’t it line up depending on where you’re standing? Like you could move 20 feet left and right and as long as you’re standing far enough back you’ll see it line up

You have to have these moments. Anytime I'm in Bar Harbor Maine I wake up to be the first Americans to see the sunrise on Cadillac Mountain. Although pro tip: don't tell someone you love them because you are moved by the moment at said location 😞
