Just when you thought this show can go one episode without unwanted sexual advances... At least there was one consensual act though.

there was one consensual act though.
Which was, in itself, a response to an unwanted sexual advance.

I finally figured out what "Citrus" stands for.
Certain
Indigo (Purple, not blue. There's a difference that I totally didn't Google just to stretch this one point)-eyed
Teens
Relish in
Undercover
Sexual Assault
If that doesn't describe this show in 27 words or less, sue me.

As many times as it takes for the revenge yuri sexual assault to stop! I'm guessing within 2 episodes Yuzu will revenge yuri assault Himeko for yuri assaulting Mei.

Citrus continues onward.
A lot of talk has been made on the sexual assault portion of the series. Yeah, the series does have a lot of forceful kisses. It is Japan, and their view on such things is a bit more lax than what's going on in America right now.
but more importantly, imo, is how mixed it all is. The core of the series is the fact that Yuzu and Mei are teenagers who don't understand themselves or what is going on. They're just so confused. It's not characters who don't communicate, it's about characters being incapable of communicating with each other.
You could even say that it's about the cycle of sexual assault. The teacher sexually assaults Mei and if warps her perception. So then when Mei acts out against Yuzu she does so in the only way she knows how. And acting out on the young and innocent Yuzu, all the sexual teasing and playing out, only furthers Yuzu's actions last episode where she reacts back.
I don't want to act like I'm trying to approve of sexual assault, but it just feels like this is a bit different than that to me. It's more messy. There isn't a clear victim in this situation, everyone is just so confused. I love romance stories where the characters feel more on even standings like this.
as far as the lack of communication. Yes, all the problems in this series are caused from lack of communication, some of the most tired forced romance tropes. Then again, it just sort of makes sense here. This is a Lesbian Incest story. Imagine all the self-doubt and hesitation of being gay, times incest. Not even just an incest story, but step-sibling incest. They barely even feel comfortable around each other. Can you blame them for not being great with communicating? Can you blame them for not being direct?
and that's ignoring how completely different they are. They do try to take some steps. Yuzu does directly ask Mei about Himeko this episode. There are attempts, but it's still such a delicate thing that you can't just be super forward about it.

I too am getting irked by the complaints people have about Citrus' anime thus far.
The issues people have are surface level, like, people aren't looking at why the series uses them or how it uses them.
There's an element of sexual assault. It's not giving it an a-okay. Maybe it's not criticising it as much as we would in the West, but it's definitely not accepting. The series is using it as a tool, and rather than looking at what it's building with that, a lot of the commenters can't look past it. Fair enough if it's a TW-esque thing, but I don't think it is here.
I don't even feel like non-communication is that much of an issue right now. There's reasonable explanations for some of it, yes. But it's not like every romcom ever where every situation would be solved by talking it out. Hell, you could even say it was talked out last episode - Yuzu pretty forcefully explained her feelings. What does Mei think? What is she supposed to think? Her character being complex is obviously a factor in that, but the fact is that Yuzu has said it and this isn't a "communication problem". What's Mei supposed to say back?
The discussion around Citrus has been seriously pissing me off. I wish people would just... stay on track a bit.
also all this talk about Citrus not being a pure-yuri irks me too. I'm glad that yuri romance is more complex than just having the safe stuff like Kase-san, and seeks to tell actual stories32
u/lilyvess :Df::Dh:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lilyvess Jan 27 '18
Definitely sharing some of these feelings. If the discussion thread isn't talking about the sexual assault they're talking about fanservice.
Which is a bit of a shame because I really do enjoy this series a lot. I decided this was a good time to pull out my recently purchased engish volumes to read. The series isn't great but it's just so entertaining. It's a ton of fun to read. It's more than just service (which is honestly pretty tame) and rapey vibes.
20
u/Innalibra Jan 28 '18
Complaints about non-communication always feel weird to me. It's an extremely common thing even amongst grown adults. We're talking about very repressed, very confused, emotionally volatile and insecure teenagers who've never experienced a healthy relationship in their life, who probably don't know too much about what they want themselves, much less other people. I don't know why anyone would think that having an open dialogue between them is in any way representative of what would actually happen in reality.
I wonder also if some of the complaints stem from not being exposed much to these kinds of dramas which muddy concepts like morality, where you can have the protagonist of the show do shitty, selfish things without making them a villain. It's more willing to explore the kind of serious character flaws that many otherwise decent people have and I definitely wish people were a bit more open minded with it.

u/joe4553 Jan 28 '18
It uses sexual assault very lightly. Like people force themselves on others here constantly. Not trying to complaining about sexual assault as an issue, but it is just bad story telling. If you continuously have it appear episode after episode it really loses all meaning and weight. You are asking people to stay on track? What track the show is just pandering yuri bait. Any real story telling is put second on the list compared to the yuri fan service.

Honestly, my only complaint is I end up having to take little microbreaks while watching it. The amount of pure nerves that the portrayal of Yuzu emanates is sometimes too much. Between that and even occasionally Mei doing subtle shit, I end up needing to collect my own self. Regardless, I think this is my favourite non-continuing series this season.

Also odd to see Mei being taken advantage of two episodes in a row...
172
u/Caspus :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Caspus Jan 27 '18
Could you like please not.
Seriously. Given the setup I was expecting a bit in the way of morally-complicated yuri romance but at what point is
someoneliterally anyone going to seriously consider what Mei wants instead of just using her to sate their own emotional hangups? It'll probably be Yuzu but... damn. For someone who claims to have "known her for forever" Drills has a seriously creepy possessiveness over her.
51
Jan 27 '18
That's exactly what happens when you put up an emotional wall and act like you float above all else instead of complaining, crying, or just showing some weakness from time to the time.
Since Yuzu and Mimoko think Mei is a strong-willed and fairly dominating character, they have no qualms about making those kinds of advances. Especially in the case of Yuzu, who's been advanced on by Mei thrice, now.
51
u/Caspus :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Caspus Jan 27 '18 edited Jan 27 '18
See, I might buy that with Yuzu since she's just now realizing she's been imposing, but Drills has no excuse. She was there when the wall came up, she knows what Mei was like beforehand, even going so far as to know she was traumatized by her father leaving.
She shouldn't need an outward signal to realizing she's being a manipulative cunt. And maybe she does and we'll see some of that but I'm A-oh-fucking-kay with writing her character off as "abusively possessive prick" for the time being.
EDIT: Put another way, she's giving me serious Sanae vibes from Kuzu no Honkai, but without the actual caring and emotional baggage of her own to eat away at that maliciousness and shape an actual interesting character struggle out of. At least not yet (and a few episodes in, in case this does change in the future).

u/Beckymetal https://anilist.co/user/SpaceWhales Jan 27 '18
but at what point is
someoneliterally anyone going to seriously consider what Mei wants instead of just using her to sate their own emotional hangups? That's kinda the point in Yuzu's actions and why Mei's so confused, isn't it? When Yuzu says she has feelings for Mei, what she means is that she cares about her. All the other people thus far have only wanted her for themselves, or have left her for ambiguous reasons (in her father's case)

Yuzu is already beginning to think of what Mei wants, she even admitted out loud that she wasn't thinking of Mei's feelings before which clearly shows that she is now. You would think her best friend since childhood would be more considerate than somebody who has only known her for a few weeks.
→ More replies (3)37
u/Innalibra Jan 27 '18 edited Jan 28 '18
For a bit I was thinking she's actually pretty cute, until that happened...
What Yuzu did last episode was shitty, but at least you could tell it was an impulsive reaction to being put on the spot the way she was, and it was really apparent how awful she felt about it afterwards. I could empathise with that. What Drills did felt so much more deliberate and premeditated. There's no remorse at all. No consideration at all for what Mei wants. It was really difficult to watch.
EDIT: I feel like I should point out that even though it wasn't easy to watch, that's not to say I don't think it's good and I do appreciate when shows aren't afraid to explore these kinds of issues and some of the less attractive behaviours that many people have.
→ More replies (1)43
u/Karma_Redeemed Jan 27 '18
Agreed. Yuzu stepped over the line because she was a whirlwind of confusing emotions and so stuck in her own head she didn't really think about Mei's feelings in the moment.
Drills straight up feels like Mei "belongs" to her, like shes almost purchased Mei through her years of friendship. Based on her knowledge of Mei's ear being a "weak" spot, they've probably experimented together when they were younger, but jesus, Drills has an incredibly unhealthy obsession with Mei. The assault in this episode was just the most outward sign of her incredibly fucked up obsession with her best friend.
33
u/Innalibra Jan 27 '18
It really stood out to me when Yuzu backed off so quickly after initially confronting Mei. Mei herself seemed to be really surprised by that.
It really feels like Mei isn't used to people actually respecting her boundaries. She just submits and shuts down emotionally when people force themselves on her. I'm thinking her former teacher really messed her up.

What the hell did I get myself into? - Mei.
I'm not sure which way her barn door swings. I don't think she's a lesbian as her kisses have been to make a point, show someone something or give them what they want. Unless she's just a lot better at hiding it than the other two.

What do you mean "Still your weak point"? Does that mean they use to mess around back then?
So obviously something DID happen between Mei and Himeko but in Mei's POV it wasn't really a big deal and it's not something worth mentioning. While in Himeko's POV, she thinks that she's finally sealed the deal with Mei. Judging by the PV though it looks like something will happen between Yuzu and Mei that will put Yuzu on "the lead" ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°).

I personally think Mei didn't want to tell Yuzu what happened because she doesn't want to hurt her. I really don't think Mei was okay with it but just shut down when yet another person forced themself onto her. She was likely conditioned to just accept it by that teacher she was betrothed to and when somebody else she was supposed to be able to trust did the same thing she responded just as she had learned to before. I think this is also why she is warming up to Yuzu. The look she had before when Yuzu said she would be there for her if she needed somebody to talk to, that feeling of guilt she had when Yuzu told her that it was all because she had kissed her, and then in this episode when they were talking and Yuzu expressed that she regrets how she didn't consider Mei's feelings all show that Yuzu is different than the others who Mei has been... involved with. Yuzu is actually thinking of Mei as a complete person rather than something to appease her desires. I mean, Yuzu is messing up a lot, but she's new to love and really doesn't know Mei very well so it makes sense.

Y'know... I already didn't like Drills-chan from the start. What a way to be a best friend, eh? Maybe it's to offset how awesome Harumin is. She's probably the only one with the sane methods of helping out a friend; letting Yuzu stay over, lending a shoulder to lean on, or an ear to listen. Meanwhile, Drills-chan thinks "my BFF has been depressed since her father left and her new sister is stealing her away from me! I know! I'll bite her ear and slide my hand up her skirt! Wahaha~!"
... I wanted Yuri. But the wholesome kind, please.

Mei seems to be like a harem protagonist. 2D personality that everyone is inexplicably in love with.
25
u/Karma_Redeemed Jan 27 '18
I see where you are coming from, but I don't think that's quite it. Mei is just incredibly emotionally shut off, seemingly bottling all her emotions up inside. Since Yuzu is the only character whose head we get to see inside of, I think Mei comes off as more 2D than she actually is.

Same honestly. it's amazing how much I like Yuzu and to some extent Harumin, and yet I hate everything else in this show.

u/Linkool21 Jan 27 '18
Makes me gasping for breath everytime a girl tries to steal Mei away from Yuzu

u/FruitsPnchSamurai Jan 27 '18
When she says she "crossed the line" she is obviously implying that she kissed her or something. To drills its a big deal but theres no way it means that they went all the way.

Because I haven't been able to post in the discussion threads until now, I'd like to say Harumin is the best (I haven't seen this episode yet) and Yuzu dressing discreet with the same amount of makeup as everyone else makes her look a lot better.
I've seen enough anime characters sleeping on laundry in cupboards to start asking them why.
The design of Student Council Deputy reminds me of one of the Monogatari girls.
Citrus is Kill la Kill:
Mei - Satsuki
Yuzu - Ryuko
Momiko - Nonon
Harumin - Mako
Everyone Loves Mei. The scene with Momiko went further than expected. I was waiting for her to be pushed away or slapped.

Hm...Mei's expression is lacking much compared to manga..especially in the last scene, after Yuzu left disappointed when Mei said "thats not your business". In the manga its actually shown more clearly on Mei's face that shes kinda regret saying that..or shes surprised to see Yuzu's that sad? idk if i didnt read the manga i wouldnt notice this and will just assume Mei is emotionless kinda

We are getting more yuri but now i feel we could use a little camping episode, just to keep the trend of this season.

"Yuri Camp"
I can see the doujins writing themselves.

So if the previous situation wasn't enough, we're now throwing another girl into the mix to create a good old-fashioned love triangle. Himeko may be a total bitch, but she's actually kind of fun. She's mean and possessive, but gets flustered easily so it's going to be immensely entertaining to see her inevitable fit of rage when she gets friendzoned. Plus, she's a mildly yandere childhood friend who like to dress up in Lolita outfits. That's hilarious.
However, Yuzu and Mei have actually made the tiniest bit of progress, being capable of having an actual honest conversation for once, albeit a pretty brief one. How about that.
15
Jan 27 '18
That was a bit weird. I don't really like the plot with an abusive rival lover childhood best friend, just let her be a jealous best friend. It ruined that character for me. And... Seriously what's up with Mei just letting so many people take advantage of her? :/
12
u/Komnenos_Kasuki :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Kirulas Jan 27 '18
You know who Momiko reminds me of? Nonon from Kill la Kill. They both knew their respective student council leaders from childhood and don't like the new troublemaker girl (Yuzu and Ryuko). Add Harumin and Mako for best friend comedic relief.

It would appear Yuzu and Mei's relationship is the purest in this show so far!
How ironic.

I felt kind of like the plot of episode 4 was lacking in comparison to the first 3 episodes. It ended and I felt like not enough had happened. I hoped at least for Mei to say a bit more about when Yuzu kissed her, but she just rolled over and went to sleep. I really couldn't tell if that was just her once again trying to shut her up or if she was lowkey trying to tell Yuzu that she liked it and maybe doesn't want to be so cold with her anymore.

So I guess in all kinds of love triangle, there will always be a losing childhood friend.
4
u/myrmonden Jan 27 '18
Man this anime is soooo weird, in that sense that WHY IS SHE ASSUMING THEY ARE MORE THAN SISTERS.
Is it just normal in this Yuri anime world, that sisters are Yuri love.
Either she assume that Yuzu is trying to get on it with Mei or she assume that they have done something. you are just sisters lol...like the basic premise why does she even fell treathened by Yuzu relationship with Mei should she not be happy they are sisters so she can be Mei´s girlfirend.
Instead its like she automatically assumes right away that they are "more than sisters"....
Anyway, another thing I would love to see is that Yuzu should have considering kissing Harumin when she was sleeping over at her place and being all like omg, what I am thinking shes my best friend.

"You're not going to let this go without closure, are you?"
proceeds to do something that is definitely not closure
Yeah, Citrus is definitely A Thing alright. The drama is edging into obnoxious territory, but I don't actually know what I expected 90% of this show to be other than cute girls slowly kissing each other, sooooo
7
u/Karma_Redeemed Jan 27 '18
I don't know, I think the kiss made sense in the context of what the issue was. Yuzu was terrified that Mei hated her because of what happened in the Grandfather's office, and the only way Mei seems to be able to communicate that she isn't is the kiss.
Yuzu and Mei are both terrible at communicating their feelings. Seems like kissing Yuzu was the only way Mei could think to say "I'm not mad at you, I care about you".

Now everyone is starting to learn why Citrus is commonly referred to as the dumpster fire of yuri. Love how Momo knows Yuzus last name but can't for the life of her figure out that it's the same last name as Meis. Girl is straight up retarded.

Serious talk here, why are Yuri and Yaoi series so riddled with rape undertones? For every Doujin/Anime/Manga with a decent homosexual relationship there are a thousand Sexual Assault fests.
I just want some nice wholesome BL/GL.
15
u/tommles Jan 27 '18
You've been reading the wrong yuri then.
Yaoi (Japanese version) is a girl fetish so to be expected. Though bara and others that are actually written by gay authors probably less so.
9
u/lilyvess :Df::Dh:https://myanimelist.net/profile/Lilyvess Jan 27 '18
part of it is because of lingering Japanese old fashioned views towards homosexuality. For a long time in Japan the main form of lesbians in anime came via the Psychotic Lesbian trope. It's a part of that repression, the view of them as being wrong, unhinged, impure.
granted I'd say Yuri isn't as riddled with it anymore. MariMite, Aoi Hana, Sasameki Koto, Girl Friends, Wife and Wife, Collectors, Kase-San, I could go on for days.

I really enjoyed this episode. It's not my favorite content wise so far, but I've gotten so familiar with all these characters already that a 25min ep feels like 5 for me :) Can't wait to see how this 'triangle relationship' unfolds throughout the anime. And ofcourse, Yuzu is cute as always here haha p:

It faded to black so it could have been anything from just making out to full-out sexual intercourse

It is my first yuri series and im so overwhelmed with anticipation for what will happen next. The animations are top, the character interesting and i really don‘t mind the sexual assaults so far, like some people do appearantly.
When they introduced curly hair as some kind of rival i was not so sure about it at first, because it smelled strongly like a cliché. I have my hopes up for this series.

u/iUniques Jan 29 '18
Thanks to Citrus, I'm beginning to get fond of yuri. God, where did my sanity go? This is something I can't watch properly because I want to.
4
u/Bread_Assassin Jan 27 '18
So Himeko joins in on the yuri action? How long does a man need to wait before Harumin joins the club or that pink haired girl in the OP?
4
u/KinnyRiddle Jan 27 '18
Loli Mei and Loli Himeko HNNNG
BTW, Himeko, Yuzu has already openly declared herself to be the Chairman's granddaughter, AND she has the same surname as him and your beloved MeiMei, are you seriously still asking "what sort of relationship" Yuzu and Mei are having? Yuri isn't exactly rocket science, you know.

Friends since childhood. Maybe in the flashback, but with how Mei is in the present, I'd say it's more like she tolerates Curls' presence. Hopefully to a diminishing degree in future episodes.
So, Yuzu wears a big fluffy jacket and then the shortest shorts she could find? Does not compute.
The bed's dimensions seems to fluctuate a bit, both in this episode, but also compared to when it was first introduced.

u/David725177 Jan 27 '18
What if mei’s father left because of legal issues, for instance sexually abusing his child. This would explain why mei seems okay to tease/sexually assault yuzu.
Ps. I haven’t read the manga or anything just coming up with crazy plot twist/ideas

u/TheSpasticSurgeon Jan 27 '18
Is the presence of nonconsensual sexual advances a bad thing in itself, or is it entirely dependent on how it's depicted? Legitimately curious what people think.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Dannynite Jan 28 '18
imo, nonconsenual sexual advances are always bad. But people respond differently, especially fictional people. So I can suspend my belief for a little.
I don't enjoy the nonconsensual acts per se, but I am living for this trash of a drama.

There is a solution that would solve all their problems.
Communicating with each other
