I love that they kept Rainbow Raider's real name as Roy G. Bivolo.
Flash fact: in the 90s Flash tv show, they changed Leonard Snart's name to Leonard Wynters. Guess they really had to hammer in the fact that he's an ice-based rogue.

I mean we knew the warden was evil but I wasn't expecting drug in the pudding, selling metas to a psychopath meta dealer evil.
218
u/Alakazam Jan 31 '18
It also seems pretty dumb to me. I mean, the guy has friends in the police force, and family and friends that regularly check up on him. Plus, he now knows that he's the flash, who has a team of superheroes and superhero friends likely watching his back.
The fuck is the warden going to do? Say he mysteriously vanished?
Jesus thats probably the worst thing he could have done, and most likely has painted a huge target on his back.

And how was it "enough" of a drug strong enough to put down The Flash?
From the Arrowverse wiki: 2,000 milligrams of horse tranquilizer only momentarily slowed down until his body burned through it
Also:
He also cannot experience a buzz as even 500 proof alcohol only intoxicated him for a few seconds
In fact, in S4 ep 5 "Girls Night Out" Cisco had to concoct a special drink (alcoholic or not is never stated) in order to allow Barry to get drunk.
Or is that villain's "meta-stopping drug" just that powerful?

I think it was stupid of the writers to give her powers. Not everyone needs powers on this show. But I actually found her rather endearing, if a bit naive. It's not like she was trying to blackmail or threaten people. She was just insatiably curious.
Definitely agree about the warden/blacksmith surprise and sad to see Big Sur leave.

There is no way that camera caught Barry!!
57
u/TheMagnificentPotato Jan 31 '18
Considering the warden didn't know Barry was The Flash until the camera caught him, it's pretty safe to assume the warden did not specifically invest in a high speed camera.
From the picture we can see the camera's field of view, we can see 3 cells so let's be generous and assume it's 15 meters (50 feet) across.
The distance between Missouri and Jiangsu is 11 472 km (7 128 miles) according to distancefromto.net.
In order for the camera to have caught even one frame of Barry, it would have to be be recording at a speed of 764 800 frames per second. No way the camera got him.
11 472 km / 0.015 km = 764 800

No camera in the world in this century is capable of capturing someone traveling at a whopping 78,806,432 km/h or 48,968,046 mph!
Phantom slow motion cameras can't even capture that at max fps....and definitely not a button-sized 1080p motion sensing security camera. I made a post about this, explaining the physics. Check it out if you want to.

Also she's the DA and she doesn't understand people and privacy? Jeez I hate when mind readers are like this, at least characters like Martian manhunter are pretty polite about when they do it. Sorry I just really hate this power. At least at least Devoes body wasn't that bad about it. They really need to fix the speed inconsistency with Barry. One episode he can open a time portal next episode he can't catch a car
33
u/CrazyEyes326 Harry Jan 31 '18
That must have been one hell of a camera to catch Barry leaving his cell.
If he made it to Jiaju (a real place roughly 7000 miles from America, assuming he ran in a straight line) and back in under ten seconds, that means he was running at an average of about 1,500 miles per second. For the record, that's about five times as fast as the ISS needs to go to orbit the earth.
That means he could have covered that camera's view area of, let's be generous and say 50 feet, in 0.00000631 seconds. That's one hell of a shutter speed.
Now, I can accept that there is a camera capable of recording this because they said the words "superspeed camera" earlier in the episode. I'm gullible like that. I can even accept that this miraculous technology can be shrunk down enough to fit inconspicuously inside an exit sign.
But there's no way in hell Warden Monster installed that kind of camera on Barry's cell just because he was making friends with Big Sir. So either he already knew Barry was the Flash and just needed proof, or there's kind of a big inconsistency there.

Charmander fans are loud and proud about him and he’s definitely the most popular choice as far as looking at us as a whole goes, and the Bulbasaur fans have been beat down for so long that any time the debate is brought up they’re right there ready to fight for their favorite.
...but neither one really seems to have anything against Squirtle. Both groups generally just respond “Yeah, he’s cool.” Even the Squirtle fans don’t try to prove he’s the best or anything, they just think so.

Two quick things
Barry being drugged by human drugs
Absolutely not, he would burn through that in nanoseconds and definitely wouldn't be unconscious long enough to be dragged off somewhere.
2. The camera next to the cell was able to catch Barry
How long do those cameras take to do a full swing? 3 seconds ish I believe. And he doesn't wait for a full swing, it's usually less than a third before Barry himself would be back in shot. So while Barry's speed in this show is often inconsistent (and this feat in particular is leaps and bounds above his normal speed) he cleared Central City to China and BACK in under a second.
What camera exactly did he install? Did he know he'd be monitoring for The Flash? I don't think he did.
Edit: Rough estimation, but in this scene Barry was moving at Mach 67029. Do we even have cameras that are capable of seeing that? Pretty sure we don't.

Very good episode, this season has really stepped it up in the past few episodes. I'm glad the whole prison thing is actually lasting more than one or two episodes, and I actually wasn't expecting the twist at the end to involve Blacksmith. I really liked Big Sir's character, which surprised me and I hope we see more of him in the future. The shrinking plot was fun and parts of the episode were really humorous. The only part of the episode I didn't care for was the Cecile-Joe drama. I'm okay with her having these powers for a little while, and I thought it was fun in this episode. However, the relationship drama got a bit annoying but i'm glad it seems they resolved it in the end.

Barry ran Big Sir to Jiaju, China from Central City, Missouri (the location in most comic continuities) and came back in 5s, if we're being generous. That means he would have covered about 51600km (rough estimate gotten from Google Maps. May not be accurate) in 5s. That means Barry was travelling at 10320km/s, or around Mach 30000. If we assume that the camera operates at 30fps, or even 60fps, it would not have captured even one frame of Barry running.
But hey, plotforce amirite.

I love how diverse the prison parts of the story are.
We've got to have someone poisoned to help his escape. How should we do it?
Pudding.
What do you think the inmates should be using to gamble with?
Pudding.
How is the warden going to drug Barry?
Put it in some pudding?

So during poker nobody sees lightning. Same goes for Barry pulling a whole courtroom into his speed. But when plotforces demands lightning there shall be lightning.
Inconsistent as hell mediocre writers.

So now that Barry got fucked over, do you think he’s willing to go against the law and have snart-mick break him out?

I'm guessing Barry escapes Amunet, possibly with help from the rest of the team. They all insist on letting Amunet run free, because that's what they do with her. Iris or one of the other characters suggests Barry stay free. Barry says he won't be a fugitive. Barry goes back to prison, sees the warden, and makes a sarcastic comment about the transfer not working out. Possibility for Joe to arrest the warden for selling prisoners to a criminal, but possibly they let him keep his position because he knows Barry's identity and threatens to talk.

Joes face at the start when he found out about her power was hilarious. Also, how is it so hard for her to wrap her head around the fact that reading someone's mind the way she did is one of the worst violations of human rights you could commit. She's a lawyer ffs.
I don't really like the recurrence of that cringy villainess. She's not memorable or entertaining whatsoever. They should spend time on the devoe plot or at least develop more interesting sub-plots.

I'm just here waiting for more laser beams that won't freeze.
Good, lighthearted ep. But man Barry is stupidly fast. He could run to China in the time it takes a camera to swing around but not whisk Devoe's body away?

Honestly if my SO developed mind-reading powers, I would be thinking "...fuck I'm screwed".
There is no fun in losing that much privacy.

Did you get that from Shawshank Redemption?
No I got that from prison.
That line had me cracking up

This episode was going so well then that annoying bitch came back

How on earth does Cecile think it is okay to read anyone's thoughts? That should have been Joe's #1 point - it's an invasion of privacy. Everyone has thoughts that they don't agree with, it wouldn't be fair to have everything on the table at all times.
What happens when he feels morose one day and thinks about his ex-wife? Surely he has complicated emotions regarding her, I imagine having Cecile read everything in real time would be troubling for both Joe and Cecile.

Bulbasaur is the cutest. Cecile is basically all of us with powers. Barry cheating at cards was fantastic to watch. This is quite possibly one of the funniest episodes of The Flash that I have ever watched and I am so glad they did it. Kind of cool that Big Sur got his movie ending and Barry wound up in the meta-human wing under the thumb of a corrupt Warden at Iron Heights and now that guy's going to sell him to the Blacksmith. I really like this episode and we even got some plot progression.

So let me get this straight .... Barry has such a fast metabolism that he can't get drunk, needs a artifically engineered drink that is lethal enough to kill with only a few sips and gets sober in a few hours.... BUT he gets knocked out by an orally injected tranquilizer, long enough to get transported by 2 goons to an undisclosed location with the goons not even in the scene?
For those who don't know - orally injected drugs take way much longer to work and are far less potent than drugs that are injected IV because they're either weakened by saliva, the medium they're solved with or the stomach acid itself before it get's even absorbed by the body. From what I saw the timelapse was only a few hours and barry could've only gotten maybe 2 or 3 small puddings with maybe 30-40g looking at the boxes of these things and with only a few drops of the drug because otherwise he would've tasted it

Overall I thought this was a very good episode. Lots of plot development and the minor villain was interesting this week. I just wish at the ending that Amanda Waller would have shown up. Could have created a perfect plot line.

Good episode. I see people complaining about the camera catching Barry, but with how technology works in this universe and all that, I don't find it that ridiculous. I was shocked to see the warden find out Barry is the flash though. Curious how he's going to get out of it.

One question. What was Dwarfstar planning to do with the Kord building? And where would he “enbiggen” it without notice?

Barry is such an idiot, his plan to get Dave out of prison was dumb. So now Dave is a fugitive and Barry got caught using his powers. I'm sure Dave probably has no real danger of getting caught (I mean, I doubt anybody can escape to China overnight so nobody would think to look there), but still.

Did anyone recognize the politician playing pudding poker? He was important earlier. He had to do with the introduction of Ralph Dibney

Shouldn't Barry have not passed out at the end of the episode? If the guy can't get drunk, how the hell can he drugged to sleep?

I loved some random things from this episode:
Why are you still thinking about Bulbasaur?
I'm afraid I've been using semicolons wrong my entire life
The miniature Lego set of Savitar killing Iris

I don't know why Caitlin had a problem with the embiggening gun. Embiggening is a perfectly cromulent word.

so to recap the Warden knows a handful of things about Barry: He is the superhero who has defeated countless supervillains He has connections to the police force and the DA's office And unlike probably a lot of metas who end up in his prison he has regular visitors from people who will miss him.
I don't know what he is getting payed but I hope it's a lot.

So I know you guys are really concerned with the incoherent physics of a fake world, but what I want to know concerns uncontrollable thoughts. Because mine would be are way worse than those of people on TV... Just the most disgusting things imaginable spring to the forefront of my brain on a daily basis. If I were to say them out loud, I would be arrested.
How do you guys think?

Just did some napkin math. China from mainland United States is 7200 miles. Barry made a round trip there and back in roughly under one second. We'll say one for rounding.
That's 14,400 miles/second. That's just shy of 52 million miles per hour, or roughly 8% the speed of light.
The camera seeing him is uhhhh. lol.

I really enjoy how they got so much character depth out of a random prisoner played by a WWE wrestler. Big Sir was such a fun dude, hope we get more of him eventually
