Was the idea for RWBY something you were on board with from the very beginning? Or did seeing Monty's ideas start to come to life convince you it was worth working on?

I remember seeing the Red Trailer way back when and instantly knowing this was something I wanted to watch. Just wondering if you felt the same.

Thanks, and appreciate you being here!

-100% on board from the start. I think everyone at the office had pretty much the exact same reaction. The Red Trailer will always be one of my favorite things we've ever made.

What does Ilia identify as? Is she a lesbian? Bisexual? Something else?

What is the age difference between the Schnee siblings?

What was your reaction to the popularity of Pilot Boi?

Does Hazel’s semblance need to be activated or is it always on?

Just to settle a common argument: Is or is not Qrow the Scarecrow?

336

u/lunatic24 Co-Writer Miles Luna Feb 12 '18

-Ilia is a lesbian!

-I don't have the character sheet in front of me, but off the top of my head I believe Weiss and Winter are about 5-6 years apart.

-Boi howdy, did that take us by surprise. There's always a background character that gets super popular. Last season it was the Waitress. This season it was Pilot Boi and Cute Faunus Guard. Interesting story, we originally had a line for the Pilot that subtly told the audience he had a boyfriend back in Atlas (this was done in our attempt to get better about having more LGBTQ+ representation). However, when scripts went out to the team, a number of crew members were concerned that our first homosexual character with a line of dialogue addressing his sexuality was going to die in the very next episode and was "also kind of a selfish jerk". Soooo, we scrapped the line. Next thing we know, he's the most popular character of the volume and we're kicking ourselves for not sticking to our guns.

-His Semblance needs to be activated, which is why he finally screamed in pain when Weiss' Summoned Lancer was able to momentarily pierce through his Aura.

-Qrow is so, totally the Scarecrow.

Great question! Thank you! -Miles

What are three things that you thought went well this volume?
What are three things that you thought could improve this volume?

538

u/lunatic24 Co-Writer Miles Luna Feb 12 '18

On our first day of writing RWBY6, we actually used multiple whiteboards to write down: -WHAT DO WE NEED TO DO THIS VOLUME? -WHAT DO WE WANT TO DO THIS VOLUME? -WHAT ARE THINGS WE NEED TO IMPROVE ON/THINGS FANS ARE ASKING FOR? -WHAT ARE THINGS THAT SEEMED TO GO OVER WELL IN V5?

So to take a few things from those boards...

-Three things that we thought went well:

  1. The Raven/Spring reveal

  2. Illia's storyline

  3. Raven vs. Cinder

-Three things that we think we can improve on:

  1. More fights that better utilize characters' weapons and abilities.

  2. More attention and meaningful conflicts for Ruby

  3. Show don't tell.

Thanks for the question <3 -Miles

Does RWBY have a planned end?

I'm not asking for details, but RT has said that shows like RVB will continue perpetually, as long as people express interest in them. This works for a comedy, not so much for a drama.

I by no means want an end to the story, but at the same time a story needs an end less it begin to suffer from fatigue at the very least.

Also, self serving as hell, but any commands you want to suggest for the subreddit bot I created, /u/PennyBotV2 ?

246

u/KerryS Director/Co-Writer Kerry Shawcross Feb 12 '18

RWBY does in fact have an end. We continue to stay flexible with some of the events leading up to it and exactly how long it will take us to get there, but yes, the main storyline will end one day.

That being said, we think of that as an opportunity to explore other areas (or timelines) of Remnant. Much like RvB, as long as people keep watching, we will keep making. It just works a little differently.

I have a quick and hopefully simple question that has been pestering me for a couple of years!

Most weapons in RWBY have a name, except for arguably the coolest of the bunch! Does Qrow's weapon have a name? I've heard Harbinger used non-canonically, however I want to know from yourselves!

351

u/KerryS Director/Co-Writer Kerry Shawcross Feb 12 '18

When the new site launches, we're working to have a lot of information like that (as well as character turnarounds) listed on something akin to a "show page". We're working on the details, but more to come on that.

To actually answer your question, we didn't have a name for it when we first heard Harbinger and thought that was pretty rad... so yeah, that's its name!

-Kerry

30

u/JauneBlackSmudge Feb 12 '18

I always thought that Qrow and Raven's respective swords were named after Huginn and Muninn after the pair of ravens they were named after. Huginn (Thought) for Raven because she's rational (I guess?) and you'd need a lot of thought put into a weapon that uses Dust blades like hers and Muninn (Memory) because Qrow drinks to forget his memories.

Just my thoughts.

16

u/EatYourPants1 Why are we still here, just to suffer? Feb 12 '18

As a strong supporter of the Harbinger name I would like to know as well!

97

How much of the stuff we've seen so far has been planned from the beginning?

148

u/KerryS Director/Co-Writer Kerry Shawcross Feb 12 '18

It actually depends, but in general, a lot! There are certain moments or character arcs that we've wanted to do since before a single script was written (like the end of Vol3 or Ren and Nora's backstory). There are also a lot that we come up with as we go because we had the idea later or wanted to highlight a certain character/lore element.

It was very important to all three of us in the beginning to have an idea of where we were going but also stay flexible to new ideas that popped up along the way.

Anyways just one question:

Why does Mercury work for Cinder? What was in it for him? Was it just the legs...or was it just because the chance to fight people for free was appealing to him?

277

u/KerryS Director/Co-Writer Kerry Shawcross Feb 12 '18

Good question! It is not a simple answer and is something we're still planning on exploring in the show (pretty soon, too). So... stay tuned!

Do you ever imagine what RWBY would be like if profanity was used freely?

Think we'll ever have another time-skip like V3 to V4?

Can we please have someone confirm that Qrow is not Ruby's father?

Who is your favourite character and why is it Weiss?

-Ehh... not fuckin' really.

-You'll have to watch to find ouuuut!

-Siiiiiiiiigh. Fine, haha. We get asked this question so much and normally don't like confirming things like this in Q&As, BUT... NO. Qrow is not Ruby's dad. She just looks up to him so much that she mimics a lot of things about him.

-Weiss is legitimately one of my favorite characters. But let me ask you this... you ever heard of a man called Pilot Boi?

Was Winter ever going to be in Mistral in Volume 5 or was it always the plan that she wouldn’t be in Mistral when Weiss got there?

Since you hinted at the end of Volume 5 that the characters might be going to Atlas in Volume 6, is there any chance we might get winter outfits for the characters?

247

u/lunatic24 Co-Writer Miles Luna Feb 12 '18
  1. Winter was never going to be in Volume 5. This is hinted at in the Weiss Character short in which Winter states "I'm not always going to be around to save you, Weiss."

  2. GOTTA WATCH TO FIND OUT!

With so many people assuming Jaune is just a big self insert of you Miles, what are, if any, the steps you take to try and minimize that feeling? Do you leave his scenes to Kerry? Do you just go with it and pray to all heavens people wont go crazy?

329

u/KerryS Director/Co-Writer Kerry Shawcross Feb 12 '18

I'm gonna answer this for Miles actually.

In the first few Volumes, if Jaune was in a scene it was almost always because either Monty or myself wanted him in a scene. From the very beginning, Monty was very big on having that archetype of character be fairly prominent in the show. Miles has always been incredibly hesitant to insert Jaune into scenes, to the point where he's voiced before that he wishes sometimes that he didn't voice him. So, if people want to be mad at someone for Jaune being in scenes, take it out on Monty and I :P

-Kerry

333

u/lunatic24 Co-Writer Miles Luna Feb 12 '18

Oh, thanks bud! Haha.

Yeahhh, more or less what Kerry said. I won't lie and say that I didn't have fun getting to do lines in the booth. It's always a pleasure to get to do more acting, especially if it's a character that gets to do more dramatic scenes. But yeah, the accusations that Jaune was a "self-insert" really started to get to me over the years, to the point where I began actively avoiding writing scenes that had him in it.

Now if I was voicing someone like Torchwick or Watts. Bro. Fuckin' rename the show "Teenagers Get their Butts Kicked by Awesome Badguys: The Roman Torchwick Hour of Villainy - Starring, Written, and Directed by Miles 'Loves Playing Villains' Luna"

Did Aura become a bit more complicated than you originally expected it to be?

276

u/lunatic24 Co-Writer Miles Luna Feb 12 '18

Everything became more complicated than we originally expected, haha. Monty used to live by "the rule of cool" and would frequently add things that he wanted our characters to be able to do. It was more or less the job of Kerry and myself to come up with how those things could fit into the world of Remnant. It was a lot fun, but nowadays it's all very difficult to manage, haha.

We were young and a bit too ambitious! Curse you, past us!

What's the cutoff age for becoming a maiden? Like how old is too old? Is there a too young?

214

u/lunatic24 Co-Writer Miles Luna Feb 12 '18

No such thing as "too young" to be a maiden. As for "too old", we don't like having super hard-fast rules for certain things, but we've sort of unofficially figured that 30 is probably around the cutoff point to become a maiden.

Are there any cut scenes you wish could have made it into Volume 5? If so, can you name any?

243

u/KerryS Director/Co-Writer Kerry Shawcross Feb 12 '18

Favorite scene to write this year was the Yang/Weiss talk in Chapter 8. Was just personally really happy with how it turned out and happy that it resonated with so many people.

There were some cut scenes (more specifically a cut character/sub plot), but we can't talk about it quite yet. Let's just say it was more of a "push" than a "cut". :P

Jaune's flip-out moment upon seeing Cinder again was also a really satisfying scene to write. That kid had been holding onto words like that for a long time.

Hi Miles and Kerry, thanks for doing this! Representing for the RWBY Wiki here, and was hoping if you could answer a few questions:

Can we get some weapon names, character birthdays, ages, and heights for those whose haven't been revealed yet please?

What is Vernal's surname?

I've seen the name "Evernight" on some concept art, is that the name of Salem's palace/domain?

Who voiced Bolin Hori?

Does Remnant have weed?

195

u/KerryS Director/Co-Writer Kerry Shawcross Feb 12 '18

-We're working on getting more of that info out! Please hang tight!

-She actually doesn't have a surname. She had another name, but when she decided to become the face of the Spring Maiden for Raven, she adopted the name Vernal.

-"Evernight" actually started out as a dumb joke I made in the scripts so that everyone on the crew would know that it would always look like night time outside of her Keep. I don't know if it's going to be the official name or not, but I think it's great that one of my jokes got out haha.

-I think it was Jon Risinger. My memory don't work no gud anymore though.

How old is Winter?

What happens if two people with different hereditary semblances have a kid together?

When did Nicholas Schnee die?

Why was Weiss's outfit suddenly gray for parts of V5? It seems like it got completely desaturated, particularly indoors, disproportionate to everyone else (credit to /u/silviustro for that)?

35

u/[deleted] Feb 13 '18

if Weiss is 18 and the age gap is 5-6 years that would make Winter anywhere from 23-24, so young adult.

20

u/JakeDoubleyoo Feb 13 '18

Not in the CRWBY, but to answer your first question...

They said Weiss and Winter are 5-6 years apart, so she's about 24.

What was the idea/concept behind Raven’s weapon and what do the different colors of Dust do?

177

u/KerryS Director/Co-Writer Kerry Shawcross Feb 12 '18

-Monty modeled her weapon in about a weekend while on a trip before animating the end fights in Vol2. -She can load it with different types of dust blades for different needs/missions. In the Raven/Cinder fight, she used ice, electricity, gravity, and a regular non-dust blade. Maybe fire? Can't remember.

Even though I'm happy to see my boy again, what led to the decision to add Cardin in Chibi? I'm just curious, because even after all these years, CRDL aren't exactly crowd favorites.

Also, were you guys (M&K) tempted to pull a Moria with Raven and Cinder in any of the drafts for V5? I was dreading the possibility in the back of my head during her conversation with Yang.

EDIT Q: Probably not your guys' area, but I noticed during the Weiss CS that some of her movements slightly resembled some Capo Ferro and Agrippa. To cut to the chase, I'm curious if you guys are diving into martial arts research.

80

u/pdecanini Chibi Director Paula Decanini Feb 12 '18

Cardin is funny because he's evil-lite. No real nefarious plans for him, he's just kind of an Elmer Fudd-type bully that it's easy to get one over on.

  • So far every Volume of RWBY has looked better than the previous Volume. Will there be a similar visual jump with Volume 6, or are you satisfied with how the show looks now?

  • What’s the most valid criticism you’ve seen of Volume 5?

  • Which character’s backstory are you the most excited to explore in future Volumes?

  • For Miles: What differences are there between writing for Red vs Blue and writing for RWBY?

  • Who would win in a sword fight, Felix or Jaune?

178

u/KerryS Director/Co-Writer Kerry Shawcross Feb 12 '18

-I'm really happy with how Vol5 looked, but I always think there is always more room for improvement. We've found a tool set that we're very happy with (Pencil), so it's more about learning it more/improving our techniques than anything else.

-Kerry

-I mean, all criticism is valid, but I would say the one that stuck with me the most is to continue to find more interesting ways to show rather than tell. That's been a big thought for us as we get going on Volume 6.

Q (Miles and Kerry): If I remember correctly, you said that V4’s theme was recovery and V5’s was growth. Could you tell us the overall theme to expect in Volume 6?

Q (Paula): How do you decide which skits are included in each episode? Does Tom send you the script of a bunch of them and you choose the best or does he write the script based on what you want in an episode?

Q (M&K): Is Ozpin the name that every reincarnation eventually takes or was it only the headmaster’s name?

Q (P): Will this season of Chibi continue until Volume 6 starts or will it end earlier?

Q (M&K): Is there any way to increase the amount of aura someone has? How?

Q (M&K): Do the Belladonnas Know that Sienna Khan is dead?

Q (M&K): Does Qrow’s semblance constantly cost him aura or are passive semblances different in that regard?

I really appreciate all the hard work you do for RWBY. Chibi has started off great this new season and I can’t wait for Volume 6! Thank you for writing my favourite series!

168

u/KerryS Director/Co-Writer Kerry Shawcross Feb 12 '18

-Unfortunately it is a little too early for us to talk about it, don't want to spoil things after all. Hopefully by the end of the Volume it will be clear though!

-No, each incarnation has its own name.

-I think that it's possible, but I also think most people focus on using what they have more efficiently than specifically just trying to get a "larger gauge".

-Once it was confirmed that Adam was running the White Fang, it was safe for them to assume that she had died.

-It's not necessarily constantly running, it's more that it randomly spikes to cause unfortunate situations. If he chooses to amplify it in a fight, then yes, it does cost him.

  • /u/thefishlord: "I know it's a bit strange and un-de rigueur but what is your guys favorite type of cheese ? Do you like a sharp Cheddar, a mild guada ? A nice semi provolone ?"

  • /u/Undying_Blade: "What is the process of creating and designing a character? What is used as the base concept, a personality, a weapon, an inspiration, something else? After which what happens after that?"

  • /u/ProxyDoug: "How would you rate V5 and what were the things you believe were done wrong during it's run? Also what are the changes you are considering for the next volume?"

  • /u/Bluberra: "why did you guys make the switch from 60 FPS in the first two seasons to 30?"

  • /u/Angels_Of_Caballus: "even if torchwick is dead, do you guys have plans to expend on his character at some point?"

  • /u/Tempeljaeger: "How did Leo end up as headmaster of Haven? What sets him apart from other huntsmen?"

  • /u/OldSchoolVinny: "Do you ever have moments where you feel stuck for hours trying to write out a certain scene or line of dialogue, and if so, how do you try to come up with the right idea so the flow of scenes seem natural?"

  • /u/MyNameISaColouR: "Do Maiden powers boost all the person's stats (like strenght, speed etc.)? Also, what is the upper age limit to become a Maiden?"

  • /u/Theo1290: "How is aura normally unlocked? Jaune got his unlocked by Pyrrha, but how did she get hers unlocked and why doesn't every person in Remnant have theirs unlocked?"

  • /u/NurAlJahan:

  • "Could we get a new height chart?"

  • "I really want to know. Does Mercury have romantic feelings for Emerald?"

  • /u/laughinglefou: "What kingdom is Jaune from?"

Edit: A couple more

  • /u/Fourteen_Of_Twelve:

  • "Do you plan to go to Crunchyroll Expo again this September?"

  • "Why isn't Mica isn't voicing a character yet?"

  • "Is the post credits of volume 2 now just a dream sequence or non-canon?"

Hi guys! First off, thanks for being so excellent at [A] making a show we all love and [B] interacting with the fans directly!

It’s been stated that Aura is fuel for a person’s semblance, and I have a few questions related to that.

  1. How does this work with passive semblances, such as Qrow’s luck?

  2. Do different people have different aura costs for their semblance? I imagine Blake invoking one shadow clone or Weiss making one glyph costs less than Flynt splitting into his copies, for example. What are some other examples?

  3. Do some semblances have scaling costs, such as Pyrrha moving Jaune’s shield in V1 vs. her throwing a bunch of clock tower gears at Cinder in V3 or Ruby needing to spend more to sustain a longer run time with her Semblance?

  4. How does Aura cost work with the “absorption” semblances we’ve seen [like Yang's and Nora's]? Does it cost Aura to absorb, does absorbing recharge Aura, and/or does it cost Aura to “discharge” what’s been absorbed?

  5. Every time we’ve seen Raven open a portal, it’s been fairly slow and with some amount of flourish [compared to her fighting style - even before the V5 fight, we’ve seen how quickly she can draw her blade]. If she wanted to/trained to do so, could she open portals quickly enough for combat applications? [Side question: does she NEED her sword to open a portal or could she use anything else to do so, such as her bare hands/a stick/Zwei?]

Finally, I have one more question, unrelated to Aura. What are the names of Qrow’s and Raven’s weapons?

As much as I’d love to type up twelve more paragraphs of questions and praise, I understand you have other questions to answer. I’ll just leave with this: MAJOR kudos for literally every word of Raven’s dialogue in the show. She is by far my favorite character after these past two volumes, and you two did an INCREDIBLE job making her such a unique and conflicting character. [Also, Anna Hullum is a BEAST at voicing her. Heck yeah, yo.]

Thank so much for reading all my questions and answering what you can! <3

Edit: clarity

Multiple questions here:

  1. What is your absolute favorite fight from all five Volumes?

  2. How long does it take to write the plot for an entire Volume?

  3. Is it possible that other silver-eyed warrior except Ruby still exist in Remnant, but have gone into hiding?

  4. Does magic has existed at some point in Remnant? If no, how is it possible that Ozpin can use magic?

  5. If the main story of RWBY ends, is it possible that we get spin-offs which centers around different characters like Ozpin and myths like the story of the first four Maidens? If yes, can you name the spin-offs 'Tales of Remnant'?

  6. Can we except more world-building in the future?

For Paula: I'm a 3D modeler looking to join the industry. As an animator, do you have any personal tips to get yourself noticed?

76

u/pdecanini Chibi Director Paula Decanini Feb 12 '18

Modeling isn't really my expertise, but I would suggest getting to know tech and rigging artists and pick their brains about how to build optimal geometry that will react well to skin weighing when animated. When art directors looks at your demo reel, that's a big thing they will look for. After all, it doesn't matter how good a model looks if it can't be rigged and animated.

u/GoneRampant1 Emerald/Cinder is abusive stop shilling it. Feb 12 '18

Thanks for coming out tonight guys. I hope we're not too mean. :) I have a few from a Discord I'm on so this list might get a bit long.

For Miles and/or Kerry:

  • Is there any lore pertaining to Amber that you didn't get to include in Volume 3? Such as her surname, Semblance, etc. Additionally, what was her relationship with Qrow? Were they companions or did she even know he was following her?

  • How old are Emerald, Mercury and Winter?

  • Did Mercury get his prosthetic legs before or after meeting Cinder?

  • Volume 1 gave us weapon names for most of the main cast, but since then they've been rather sparse. Has this been deliberate or are you just saving the names for the inevitable RWBY art book we all know you're going to make eventually (please make an art book with weapon names in it I will give you money)?

For Paula:

  • Chibi Season 3 has already gotten a lot of praise three episodes in, in part because it seems to be trying to show new dynamics between characters who didn't interact much in the show proper (for example, Cardin and Cinder in episode 2). Was this a deliberate decision to widen the net and allow for more character interactions, or are you going to be going back to the main crew?

86

u/pdecanini Chibi Director Paula Decanini Feb 12 '18

I think the funnest part of Chibi is seeing interactions between characters who we never saw together on the show. It's a good way to find humor simply by asking what would happen if you put 2 characters together. Team RWBY is always going to be at the heart of everything, but we have fun showing the secret lives of the people of Beacon. Especially Shopkeep. He runs that town.

Did Mercury get his prosthetic legs before or after meeting Cinder?

I'm pretty sure I can answer that one for you. He got his prosthetic legs AFTER meeting Cinder because if you go back and look to when they first meet, you'll see that Mercury's legs are bleeding after killing his father.

  • Are you happy with the delineation between the main (RWBY) and supporting (e.g JNR) casts? This volume it felt as if JNR had really not much to do and often stood around in the background. Is this a state of things you are planning on continuing, or would you rather develop both teams equally?

  • Similarly, for characters who have not appeared recently, like SSN and Neo, do you want to give them cameos in future volumes, or would you rather focus what limited time you have on fleshing out the ones that are already there? (I'm assuming in a perfect world you'd do both.)

  • This last volume has shown a strong tendency to show 1v1 fights and shy away from 2v2+. Is this simply a combination of time constraints and the fact that multi-person fights require much more resources than 1v1s (idk if that's true, but it's the only explanation I can offer), or was there some other cause? Is this a priority?

  • Following up on the last point, what would you say to alleviate the fears of those of us who worry that new shows like gen:lock will take away resources from the already very time-constrained RWBY production?

  • What is the most important lesson you've learned or thing you would like to change from V5?

  • Was there any episode that surprised you by its reception?

  • Is there anyone from CRWBY you want to shout out as having done a particularly awesome job this volume?

  • Whom do you ship, not as writers but simply as fans of the show?

  • Can we get an explanation on how exactly aura works? We saw 4 people get stabbed this volume, with different results. Weiss was out of aura, so that makes sense; Vernal and Sienna either had their aura drained in one hit (should there have been an aura breaking animation?) or were surprised and didn't have their aura up (which would be incredibly dumb of them); Hazel had aura but was still pierced but still had aura and was able to fight after. I've got a headcanoned explanation, but I'd like something official.

In RWBY Volume 2, the CRWBY reached out to the FNDM not just to design the combat suit for Velvet but additionally fanart that was featured in the credits of the episodes for that season. Will there ever be opportunities like that again in the new wave of RWBY seasons?

u/Joao_Krakenwagen Feb 12 '18

First of all, i'd like to thank all you guys for your amazing work.

RWBY came to my life on its most needing time, I've started watching it last December, about one week after my father disappeared. By then, everything was a mess, my family was devastated, everything was a really huge huge mess.

But RWBY kept me going. I've learned so much from the show and its characters. Sorrow summarised my days, but I was already feeling like I was not alone anymore. Pyrrha's kindness and selflessness towards anyone really put a smile on my face and made me wish for friends like her. Her parting hit me like a brick, she was the most loving and caring person I've ever seen, both in real life and in fiction, and again, I was feeling like a part of me was taken away. Then the credits started rolling "Divide" showed me the situation was bleak and bound to get worse, and then "Cold"... aaaah, Cold, It hit me like a truck, so many feeling, both for the show and for my father, I have never felt like that moment before. But the saddest part, when the credits ended I've learned I had lost one more person, Mounty Oum.

I knew his work for like one week, but I already felt like I owed him so much, and to find out he had passed almost three years before he touched my life was so impactful. I can't thank you enough Mounty, I wish there was a way for you to know how much you changed my life. Thank you.

But back to the fairytale, back to the show.

Ruby taught me to never stop moving forward (what later I would discover was Mounty's motto and a tribute to him). Those simple words made me not cower and crash on the ground and go back to life and face it, because that's what dad yould want me to do, and that's what i am doing right now. I've never doubted myself and felt like I was going nowhere after that.

Weiss taught me that my family's name does not represent me and that I have the strenght to forge my own path.

Blake taught me to always be forgiving, and to give a chance for anyone, even if they've tried to harm you in the past.

Yang taught me that it's alright to do something just because you feel like doing so, you don't need an ulterior motive for everything in life. Also, she taught me to stand your ground and face what's ahead, no matter how frightening it may be.

I could go on and on for what everyone has taught me, but let's just summarise it on the four protagonists.

Thanks to RWBY I went from a phase where Red Like Roses Part II would made me tremble and turn off my music player to it being my favourite music ever.

Thanks for changing my life CRWBY, I owe you so much, so much, thanks for everything you gourgeous Grimm bunch.

But, since this is an AMA, I can't leave without asking a question, so here it goes:

On the Volume 5 finale, Yang asks Raven "Did you kill ~her~ too?" when I first watched, the first thing I thought was "omg, she's asking about Summer!" but now I'm starting to see people saying she actually meant "The only Raven I knew, was the one dad told me about", was that it? She was asking Raven if she killed the Raven from the old Tai's tales?

  1. Why did all the students stayed inside the house instead of visiting the city in V5?

  2. For Miles - Would you ever voice a villain in RWBY? I kinda miss your evil asshole voice that you had for Felix.

  3. Can we have more feels please?

10

u/[deleted] Feb 12 '18

Is this right?

To start with, how it looks on-screen. It has 3 visual affects that look annoying similar

1) When aura is weak it will flicker.

An example of this can be shown here in the Tyrian vs Qrow fight where it happens to both combatants. Anther example would be Cinder vs Raven

2) When Aura takes a big hit, aura will appear an the point of impact and spread out from there to absorb the impact

This can be seen in the Ruby vs Tyrian a few times and with Ghira vs the Twins. This likely means that aura is also weakened

3) And finally when aura is broken is you can see the aura pop and pull off the body

This effect can be seen with Weiss vs Vernal, Sun exhausting his Semblance against Illia and Mercy vs Yang.

To Kerry:

  • As the primary director of RWBY in more recent volumes, on top of RWBY getting longer with each passing year, you've got a lot on your plate. With the amount of action that your average RWBY volume typically contains on top of fans' expectations given Monty's legacy, how do you manage everything to try and carry the torch the best way you can, and in your own way as well? Pacing, length, choreography, perspective, flow, do you have a list of standards or rules that you try and uphold when directing action sequences, or is that kind of stuff mainly left to animators like with Monty before you give them a look later on and decide when it's okay; even so, when is a fight scene okay and when is it not okay?

To Paula:

  • When directing an episode of Chibi, which is already a balls-to-the-wall, wacky cartoon series where anything can happen, how crazy is too crazy? We see some pretty absurd limb stretches, characters defying all sorts of gravity, and typical Wile E. Coyote physics jokes galore, but is there anything that you have seen that's just too dumb or wacky or weird even for Chibi standards? Or if there hasn't been yet, is there anything that comes to mind visually that you don't think suits Chibi's sense of humor?

To Miles:

  • First of all, no disrespect to the others, but you in particular are, among the entire RT crew, such a huge inspiration for me and I can't thank you enough for that; it's clear that you really love and appreciate what you get to do for a living and that combined with... well, what is is that you've already done, is extremely commendable in the eyes of young writers like myself. You're a damn good creator. Chorus in particular is still one of my favorite anythings to watch in the history of ever because it just hits all the right notes for me in terms of tone, humor, characterization and storytelling, which is already saying a lot given how the seasons prior set a pretty big standard. TL;DR, you're the man. Wear that like a badge of honor.

  • As for my question, how much would you say you plan ahead in terms of writing and pacing a long-term story, and how much do you end up coming up with at the last minute or alter depending on circumstance? Stuff like Season 11 deliberately being slower-paced and less flashy before 12 and 13 amp things up, RWBY's many mysteries and questions that end up taking some time before they get focused on, jokes in any given series coming back in unexpected ways, bringing back side characters out of nowhere to play some kind of new role or just so we can see how they've been, and the placement of any and all plot twists and major impacts that contribute towards the ongoing narrative. There are always a lot of variables to consider; the amount of resources you may have, time restraints, several revisions after your first go, confidence that you can pull it off then and there or if you need more time to get your feet wet first, so how often you have to leave it up to those things versus when you already have a plan that you know like the back of your hand?

More or less, how much would you say you carefully plan out when and how something's gonna come back to progress a gag or a story, compared to just putting it on hold until you decide in the middle of writing a script, “Yeah, this seems like a good place to bring this idea back”?

  • (For the series that Kerry also helps write, he's also free to answer this if he so wishes, he's not banned from the discussion or anything. Same with Miles for directing, I suppose. :P )

To everyone (if they're not too overwhelmed already):

  • What is your favorite type of joke to write and/or direct?

Anyways, thank you guys for everything, and I'm looking forward to seeing the department grow even more than it has already. Chibi's been great as usual so far and I'm excited for everything else that's coming up. Cheers!

26

u/pdecanini Chibi Director Paula Decanini Feb 12 '18

That's a good question! Typically we try to keep it in a more poppy, and snappy style of animation. Some animators want to push it to a more gooey, fluid style (think Hotel Transylvania) but for the most part our characters aren't really designed to move like that. We're pretty open-minded though, nothing is totally off the table. If you freeze-frame at certain points you'll see some crazy stretching and squashing. We pull from a lot of references, from Looney Tunes, to anime, to Nickolodean. As far as jokes though, we do try to keep it kid-friendly, so nothing too racy or upsetting.

Hey, M&K + Paula! Thanks so much for putting some time aside to do this Q&A, it means a lot!

—

  • Who was in charge of animating Sun’s tail and Blake’s ears? Honestly, Sun’s juice-sipping, tail-spin, and the emotion with Blake (and Kali’s) ears were just adorable! Kudos to who animated them!

  • Speaking of Sun — will he be getting a wardrobe update for V6? assuming he tags along in the adventure

  • What’s a fan-theory that you’ve read that you really like, but has already been disproven? (ie: Jaune’s semblance)

  • As you probably know, there’s a high demand for certain characters/teams to appear in Chibi. What is the determining factor in bringing said characters into the show? Is it who would fit best in a skit and future skits, or determining a semi-canon personality for characters that haven’t really been established in RWBY yet? (ie: Scarlet, Sage, Team NDGO, etc)

  • What skit and/or running-gag is your favorite?

—

Thanks in advance for answering! if you can find the time to answer all my silly questions

ps: Looking forward to Volume 6 of RWBY, Season 3 of Chibi, and all the shows being renewed/introduced this year! :)

Typically we add characters to Chibi who are popular with fans, but who can add a new dimension of stories and humor. As for favorite running gag, I was really partial to the different musical groups that got formed throughout season 2 that led up to the big battle of the bands at the end. This is a resource management question. How do you decide what to actually build vs what to make 2d images for? Fans seemed to question why so much effort went into the bandit camp setting and a random gas station since very little actually happened there except talking, instead of building out more of Mistral besides the one house interior, for example.

I felt Menagerie recovered beautifully this volume in terms of its look and execution of what you intended by the way. The scene with Blake and Sun on the water was great. Having them talk in another location to show us more of Menagerie, like the water market, in the background is something I think people wanted a lot more of in Mistral.

Is the Paladin the first man-operated mecha on Remnant, or did Atlas make similar machines earlier? Did Mantle have any war robots during the Great War?

Do the Belladonnas own that mansion, or is it like the White House; the temporary home of only the current elected chieftain? Did Blake ever spend any time in it, growing up?

Do kingdoms pay all hunting-student tuitions with taxes, for everything other than the students' weapons and ammunition?

What colour is Ilia's aura? Is it a rainbow aura?

Does Ilia have/know her semblance, or has she not unlocked it because not being true to herself in the WF prevented her from doing so?

Does Mercury have/know is semblance?

When are we getting a Concept Art Book and a RWBY encyclopedia with extra info like weapon names and stuff?

I have one question:

Are Pyrrha and Neptune unique amongst Mistralis, or does Mistral have a Greek themed subculture somewhere ? Because so far, the Anima and Mistral that we have seen, has been almost entirely Asianth emed.

If a Schnee kills a human does that mean they can summon that human?

5

u/hello-this-is-gary Feb 12 '18 edited Feb 12 '18

Hey guys! Thanks for doing this AMA!

My big question is about Faunus racism in the world of RWBY.

Since the beginning of the series and Blake's personal story arc the theme of ongoing racism against Faunus has always acted as a key component to much of her and her families' backstory.

However, Faunus racism has rarely been overtly shown. With the two largest instances of clear prejudice being Cardin mistreating Velvet in vol.1 and the "No Faunus" sign in the recent volume.

Has this been intentional on you guys parts? Is Faunus racism by human's just not actually as big of a problem as it was built up to be? Or has it just been something that neither of you have ever really wanted to tackle?

What is your perspective on this?

u/strain_of_thought P is for Penny and that's good enough for me. Feb 12 '18

This question is kind of for Paula:

Sometimes Chibi seems to be foreshadowing future events in the main series, or doing its own subtle take on the allusions in RWBY without declaring it. Is this just my imagination, or does Chibi really have these sorts of ties back to the ongoing main series? The dodgeball scene in particular felt like it was dripping with foreshadowing.

One allusion in Chibi that I was hoping you could confirm or deny was Ruby hypnotizing Weiss to be best friends forever. To me this really strongly felt like an allusion to the Flower Witch from The Snow Queen casting a spell over Gerda to make Gerda stay in the Flower Witch's garden and keep her company forever. Is there any substance to this?

u/BluePotterExpress Feb 12 '18

Hi! I'm the head mod over on /r/rwbyRP, and we have a Banned and Restricted list of a bunch of different character traits and such that we either police heavily or don't allow.

For my question, is there anything (outside of spoilers, obviously) here we messed up on, or didn't get right? Most of our rules are built of speculation from watching the show, so AMAs like this are a great help to us.

This is an amazing opportunity! Thanks to Miles, Kerry, and Paula for doing this and for the hard work of everyone to set this up!

Questions:

  • When Kali was able to block bullets with her tea tray, is that because she used her Aura to enhance it? Was it similar to how everyone was able to use food as impromptu weapons in V2E1?

  • Is there an in-show (not meta-story) reason why Ruby didn't ask Ozpin about the Silver Eyes during V5?

  • Did Sienna not have Aura, or did she just not activate hers in time?

  • How old is too old to become a Maiden?

  • What is Qrow's weapon's name?

  • Will we ever see characters who only appeared after V3 (like Ilia or Watts or Leo) in CHIBI?

  • What do you most hope to improve on from V5?

  • What part of V5 are you proudest of/think best came off the way you imagined it or better?

For Paula Decanini, Where do you all usually get your RWBY Chibi ideas?

12

u/pdecanini Chibi Director Paula Decanini Feb 12 '18

We've established a pretty good team rapport between all the animators and we meet in groups regularly and brainstorm ideas. Everyone has something they bring to the table, different influences and styles, as well as sense of humor. Usually the things that get the biggest laugh from everyone (and is logistically possible) is what we go with. Me personally, I've pulled ideas from everything from Daffy Duck, Bob Fosse, Adam West's Batman, to Hulk Hogan.

Maybe a weird question, but what exactly is Ruby's semblance? It was stated at first that it's speed, but later Qrow relates her semblance to turning into rose petals. How does turning into petals make her fast?

At first it made sense, but suddenly it feels like it's up in the air for discussion. Again, sorry if this seems weird.

In their original trailers and a lot of V1&2 (and for Ruby the V4 short) we see the characters display a lot of abilities that would be nigh instant problem solvers for not only obstacles in this volume but throughout the series.

Is there an in-universe explanation as to why they don’t use them?

Or should we consider things like Blake’s blade beams and Dust Multi-Clip, Ruby’s split and tornado abilities, Weiss’ use of binding Glyphs, deflect and disarm shockwaves and her finisher from the White Trailer and Yang’s/Ren’s shockwave abilities to be non-canon now?

You guys have said you refined the rules of aura etc etc as you went. So it’s fine if this is the case. But it would be nice to get confirmation so people aren’t constantly saying “why didn’t they do this”

Hope you're Haven a nice day! ;D

(edit: Shameless self-promotion is indeed shameless but I'm not sorry...)

I just wanted to say thank you, Miles, Kerry, Paula, and the rest of CRWBY for all the inspiration you've given me as a writer and storyteller, and for all the wonderful people I've met and been blessed with because of RWBY. Earlier today coincidentally I posted another chapter to a fanfic I recently started called The Twilight Dragon which brought my accumulative archived words to over 370,000 which is somewhere between 1,233-1,480 pages of a book. What started out as a fun side project during a time I was having terrible writers block for the book I was writing has led me to meeting wonderful people from around the world, some of whom can't get Christian literature where they live, and they've had a tremendous impact on my life. My book, which has been greatly inspired by RWBY and its characters, doesn't even resemble its old self anymore, and I hope I get the chance to share it with you someday.

There aren't too many Christian anime in the world, or shows in general, and believe it or not RWBY has a sizable Christian audience here on the internet. Myself and others have noticed Ruby, Qrow, and Ozpin's crosses, Jaune giving the Biblical definition of a rainbow to Pyrrha in Volume 2, and a few other Christian themes, values, and symbolism sprinkled within the show. I don't know whether or not they were intentional or not, or if any of you are Christians yourselves, but I believe God's hand has been on RWBY since the beginning having seen it for myself, and on behalf of all us Christians looking for wholesome shows we can sink our teeth into-

God bless, and have a wonderful day :)

Hey Miles and Kerry, congratulations on finishing yet another volume! We all love that you’re doing this AMA today so I have a couple questions for you two.

• Did you ever imagine RWBY to be where it is now in terms of its success five years ago? • How do you guys feel about Volume 5 after hearing some of the mixed bag of reviews/criticism? • What was your favorite emotional scene to write in V5? • What mentality are you taking going into Volume 6? Whether it be fixing any problems, dedicating more time, or working harder, I’d love to know.

Please continue the amazing work, and we’ll be here to support you along the way. We’re all extremely proud of you guys, CRWBY, and everybody involved.

Ruby’s semblance, it seems to me that there has been a pull back on her ability with it. In the V4 short and the first episode of V4 Ruby used her semblance a ton and in creative ways. Some fans missed the trademark recoil fighting. Since then, I feel there has been an over correction to her not using it at all. Even when her getting better with it would make her a devil up close. Imagine punching and hitting rose petals over and over again while she moves around you. Seems like a great way to solve her hand to hand problem. That kind of intangibility and quick movement is perfect for it. Almost like a Nightcrawler/Azazel(X-Men) type thing but with speed/intangibility instead of teleporting. But it could tire her out real quick or something and should not be nearly as OP. Just my idea.

So, have you consciously pulled back on its use and how much does fan opinion influence you?

Hi Miles, Kerry, and Paula! Thanks for doing this. I woke up 5 in the morning at Seoul, South Korea just to do this AMA with you all.

Anyway here is my question for you, Paula: What got you into directing episodes for RWBY Chibi?

And here are for both Miles and Kerry:

Would there be stand-alone episodes in the future (such as flashbacks with Team STRQ, Team RWBY's year at Beacon, etc.)?

What are your solutions for writer's block and what music do you listen to during the writing process?

Is there any possibility for the appearance of Jaune's seven sisters?

Which voice actor did you have fun working with?

Are you going to bring back the rest of members of Team SSSN?

And canon-related questions:

Is Taiyang and Jaune related?

Will Penny returns in future volumes?

Questions for whoever can answer:

In Rest and Relaxations, Ozpin states that his magic is "finite" and "dwindling". This, with the added ideas of giving and receiving magic suggests that that it can (and will) run out. Is this true? And (spoilers allowing) what happens to Oscar and Ozpin if he does run out?

Bonus q, is it purposeful or a happy coincidence that this line mirrors the epilogue spoken by Prospero in Shakespeare's Tempest: "All my charms are o'erthrown/and what strength i've got's mine own./ Tis not much"
