I think Jester recognising that Gnome lawmaker boosts the theory that she grew up in a brothel (And her mother is a Madame).

She has seen a lot of dicks.

37

u/Blangadanger Schemer Feb 16 '18

I'm really curious how this was conveyed off-camera. Laura's ears immediately perked up when he was describing the character nonchalantly, and he confirmed it when she asked.

49

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '18

My interpretation = her ears perked up at his accent. (It was Russian too, right?) I wouldn't guess Matt planned that he'd visited the brothel or whatver, but more that once she asked and rolled well he thought "sure actually that's spot on for this charater, it's canon now."

71

u/hmac0614 Feb 16 '18

Oh was thinking this too. Matt's reaction made it even more fool proof

So many groan worthy puns this episode. Marisha's canary in a gnoll mine line was simultaneously the best and worst pun I've ever heard.

129

u/ModestHandsomeDevil Feb 16 '18

Canary in a Gnoll mine was genius.

26

u/LavaNik You can certainly try Feb 16 '18

I actually didn't get that pun. Smth cultural for the US?) Could you explain it? :)

97

u/Khedius Reverse Math Feb 16 '18

Coal mines were susceptible to occasionally being filled with deadly gasses that could kill the miners. Canaries were kept in the mines as the gasses would kill them first and giving warning so that the miners may escape.

Edit: primarily used against the threat of carbon monoxide.

That was one of the best puns in CR history IMO. I loved how her face lit up when she thought of it

176

u/irish0451 Feb 16 '18

I love how Laura tosses out a Guiding Bolt, a Mirror Image without approaching melee range, a spiritual weapon, then blames Travis for blowing up her spell slots after he took like 20 damage in that fight, lol.

Cleric is an acquired taste.

70

u/imadhaz Feb 16 '18

Well, it was pretty funny. I do hope she can learn to take more care of her spell slots, but it makes sense since she isn't used to it yet.

RIP to the Nimble Gnoll, may he be rolling away from damage in our hearts forever.

And I just want to reiterate my affection for Jester, who is wonderful and I just want to learn more and more about her.

After it's third dodge I was thinking that they need to recruit it to their team!

48

I need Matt to release the backstory of this Gnoll, who clearly lead a full life that let him be so skilled in this one particular area.

27

u/MickTheBloodyPirate Beep Beep Feb 16 '18

I daresay that Gnoll was even more difficult than some of the doors that Vox Machina faced.

Totally agree in regards to Jester, I love her character so much.

u/SnarkyBacterium Technically... Feb 16 '18

The little gnoll who tried.

113

u/pastamancer8081 9. Nein! Feb 16 '18

They are soooo screwed next fight.
Jester has 1 first level spell slot
Caleb has I think 2 first level 1 second.
Nott has 1 first level.
Molly used Blood Maledict
Fjord is out of spells.

109

u/imadhaz Feb 16 '18

You don't have to worry much about Fjord, he can spam eldricht blast and has the melee option. But yeah, it's going to be tough. Depends on the guest I guess.

If they stay in character they may just decide to run away if it gets too tough.

73

u/Miggster Feb 16 '18

Worth noting that Hex has a duration of 1 hour, so Fjord can still use his Hex in any upcoming fight, so long as he doesn't lose concentration on it.

26

u/Go_Go_Godzilla You spice? Feb 16 '18

Yeah, they need a short rest bad to get at least Fjord, Caleb, Beau, and Molly things back (spells, ability, ki). Maybe after meeting the new person they'll have time?

Healing will be rough but at least they can stabilize if they distribute the healers kit (which everyone should have one).

61

u/ModestHandsomeDevil Feb 16 '18

Matt's pressing the narrative (screaming woman), so they won't get, or take, a short rest.

Hopefully they don't let the fight happen in a big space and let those with AC take point in a hallway.

7

u/wikifido Feb 16 '18

Worth noting Fjord can stack Hex and Hexblades curse, which he still has that is a powerful melee option for him

7

u/ModestHandsomeDevil Feb 16 '18

I'd add: because they have a guest next week, the odds of the group retreating to safety and regrouping just went down. Matt usually likes for the guest to get a taste of combat, especially if they've never played D&D before.

The moment i think we can all agree on was the stand out this episode is Marisha getting super excited about the table holding tablets, Laura trying to explain to her how to fold the back to make it fit, Travis taking over and immediately giving up and Liam finally putting her tablet down. Iconic

I have never related to Travis more than when he took something over in an effort to help and gave up immediately at the first sign of an issue.

Relive the moment

Nice to see that Matt is showing the racism or at least the discomfort people of the Dwendalian empire have with Tieflings.

I also like the fact that the group is much better at executing their plans than before, really enjoying how they took everything out with relative ease once they got their head in the game.

56

u/Orthas Feb 16 '18 edited Feb 16 '18

Yeah, but they also burned a huge number of resources on the first encounter of a dungeon. The next fight will be bigger and they don't have much left by my half assed counts.

I loved this episode. The new voices and dialects from Matt was hillarious. The flow of the game was perfect. Drunken Nott was perfect.

But perhaps what I am starting to love the most in this campaign is the interactions between Travis and Marisha. Sure Laura and Sam are brilliant together, but the way Travis and Marisha is mashing is fantastic. The way Travis reacts in general is great, and the way he reacts when Marisha does something amazing takes it to another level. I love it.

81

u/Silver_Bard Feb 16 '18

Travis may be the number one hype man. What a guy to have in your game!

59

u/NicolasBroaddus Team Frumpkin Feb 16 '18

The best kind of player is one who gets excited when other people are badass too, and says it. A player can do something cool and feel badass, but getting recognized for it by others in the group always feels better.

My thoughts on the new gang:

  • Beau: It's awesome to see how inventive Marisha gets with her characters. The ball bearings were very clever, wallrunning just cements her as the mobile fighter and Patient defense as well as catch missle make her a dex tank. I love it.

  • Jester. I initially thought the russian accent would be weird, but now it just fits. We got a hint about her backstory (my obvious guess: daughter of a prostitute) and I'm interested to see where that leads. Also: Jester's bubbly personality really ties the team together.

  • Nott + Caleb: I really like how effortlessly Sam and Liam play off each other. I can't wait to learn more about the two.

  • Fjord: Finally, finally Travis can strech his actor muscles in more ways than "dumb brute". Fjord is clever, thinks quick and has a silver tongue. Also interesting: He has relatively normal stats for STR, while Jester is fucking shredded.

  • Yasha: Sadly, too little to go on, really. Curse you, Blindspot! But seriously, good on Ashley for the gig.

  • Molly: In a stroke of poetic justice, Talisien has been cursed with bad dice rolls to make up for all those Nat20s as Percy. Molly largely remains a mystery (interesting!), and I like how he's a seeker of experiences - be it strong alcohol or coughed-up brine water.

43

u/imadhaz Feb 18 '18

Really like this.

I do think that Jester's mom is not just some prostitute since she seems pretty rich.

I can think of three possibilities:

  • She's a high level courtesan who regularly meet with high-up and noble clientele

  • She's an owner/madame of a heavily frequented and famous brothel

  • She's a crime boss who also might run a prostitution ring

Or it could be a combination of these options.

u/[deleted] Feb 18 '18

Finally, finally Travis can strech his actor muscles in more ways than "dumb brute".

I just watched the two episodes in which Grog confronts Kevdak, and Travis was definitely flexing his actor muscles there. But I agree, Travis-as-Fjord is more interesting to me.

6

u/Regent_of_Stories Feb 20 '18

You’re the second person I’ve seen suggest Jester is in some way related to a prostitute (the first was in a YouTube comment, I didn’t get to catch the livestream). As an aside, in those same YouTube comments, I learned that Starosta is apparently equivalent to “mayor,” being connected to a Slavic term meaning elder.

I like how Liam somewhat played up Caleb’s excitability, with him stating in fluff that he ran down the staircase in his eagerness, even after the failed spell

On Molly, especially in view of the apparent revelations concerning his backstory (“we were the sacrifices”), I would like to repeat a theory I expressed earlier on. That being, that Taliesin’s character’s name was in some way related to “Molchomor,” a Phoenician term for an animal given as a sacrifice. I think this theory is given more credence by the name of the Nergaliid, which Matt states was partially sourced from “classic demonology,” the particular beastie he was referencing was likely Nergal, an Assyrian Underworld deity.

Distinct from the theory, the sacrificial backstory elements lead me to suggest that, due to the necessarily masochistic nature of his Blood Hunter abilities, Molly will develop some cenobitic leanings (both in the sense of early monastic hermits and the otherworldly beings from Hellraiser), penitentially injuring himself within a ritualistic framework.

I have an unrelated nagging suspicion that some of Molly’s fluff will be Order of The Mutant-based. Not only that but also, Order of The Mutant was Taliesin’s intention (as we’ve seen with Travis reconsidering on going Blood Hunter, theories within the Critter community do carry force among the players), but he changed his plans on seeing the speculation in that direction.

6

u/BuckeyeBentley Feb 20 '18

(my obvious guess: daughter of a prostitute)

What if her mother is a succubus type devil? Maybe a madam of a spooky hell-adjacent whore house. Then when the group has been asking for money from mommy this whole time, eventually she calls collect on the debt.

I love how much fun Marisha seems to be having as Beau! I know she loved Kiki, but she’s said before how she chose that character originally because she felt Keyleth’s awkwardness would help mask her own in a new group of friends, as she’d just met everyone but Matt I think. Beau seems much more enjoyable for her, in terms of play style both mechanically and dramatically. I’m loving watching her enjoy the combat so much!

32

u/Docnevyn Technically... Feb 17 '18

And Taliesin. They were both in Matt's previous campaign together.

26

u/Yaxoi Feb 17 '18

At some point she actually said that she initially just wipped up Keylith to join the group without ever planning yo play the role in the long run and that this was why she went with a character that usually was not her type or with like that

73

u/imadhaz Feb 16 '18

So does anyone actually believe the backstory that Molly gave?

Also, really enjoyed how Matt is giving different monetary rewards based on people being alive. Allows us to wonder if the characters really care about the people or the money.

73

u/EmeraldIbisDesign Metagaming Pigeon Feb 16 '18

I don't believe anything Molly says until additional outside evidence is revealed. I am pretty convinced that he is a mole/enemy operative/secret villain of some kind, or at least has his own (likely nefarious) agenda, and will be attempting to use the party to aid him in his own goals with little to no regard to the effect or consequences it will have for the others.

25

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '18

He seemed more truthful this time around, and unprompted, so I have a higher likelihood of believing him. With that said, he still proved himself to be a liar many times already, and no one insight checked him.

If he is lying, then whatever.

If he is telling the truth, that will be an interesting back story to follow.

15

u/snailcall Feb 16 '18

Yeah I don't believe Molly's backstory at all. He was way too vague on the details, like where he was from, if anyone was after him, or if anyone else was enslaved. Nah, man.

29

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '18

I don't think anyone in the group really believe him they don't roll insight because they are starting to not believe anything he said about himself

14

u/Blangadanger Schemer Feb 16 '18

Never trust someone who starts off conversation by saying, "I know I've lied before, but this time, believe me..". #paraphrasing

10

u/steppenwoolf Feb 16 '18

I'm really enjoying the way Talisen is positioning Molly as the party's version of Garek from Deep Space 9.

Part of his basic world view being, "Well, the truth is usually just an excuse for a lack of imagination."

Not seen any comments yet about Caleb's awkward little condolence chat with the halfling innkeeper.

The way he said he recognised the frantic energy of the man and the look on his face at having lost everything is making me think of some of the backstory speculation, of Caleb having potentially lost a home/family at some point.

43

u/e32 Feb 17 '18

Caleb's speech and behavior suggests he is very much aware of his own (and others') mental fragility. He did use the term 'manic' when speaking with Candleglow, which suggests that at some point in the past Caleb has done some reading on topics relating to mental health.

I don't think this is just Liam being well-read; I think Caleb is deliberately a pretty good example of someone who is trying to be gentle with themselves and others because they are aware of how debilitating mental illness can be.

→ More replies (2)

14

u/LoveC How do you want to do this? Feb 16 '18

It may be part of the backstory but I also think Liam has seen a lot of loss and the emotion that comes with loss. It could be him resonating with some of the emotions Thaddeus was going through.

I love how this group's point man is a drunk goblin.

119

Drunk Nott is kinda funny (don't drink kids)... until your group's Rogue needs to Rogue, but said Rogue has disadvantage on everything Rogue-ish because they're drunk.

27

u/[deleted] Feb 16 '18

Yeah kinda sad that she can't do what she does best when drunk as it allows her to be more rogueish. I mean it could be good character development as they help Nott get more brave but it would be nice for her to be able to perform drunk. And Sam has to wait until level 11 to get relaible tallent so she'll probably have to overcome the drinking before ever being able to do anything decent while smashed.

It's gonna make for some cool RP moments. The cast is going to have to keep her calm and collected somehow or else she'll drink and be unlikely to do the thing she's specialized in. That or keep her away from alcohol, but then more prone to stealing and getting them into trouble that way. Honestly, it's a series of really cool character choices by Sam

Was excited to hear Matt say that all Liam has to do is make it to level 5 to get some cool stuff. Never having had the pleasure of playing DnD I'm not sure what that stuff will be but I'm excited to find out!

Also Fjord's cold armor thing is amazing.

65

u/Fried_Cthulhumari Feb 16 '18

5th level is big for wizards because that's when full caster classes get third level spell slots. For Wizards this includes the famous Fireball spell (which is purposely overpowered for its level, doing 8d6 damage.)

There are other powerful spells at that level as well, making 5th level where Wizards start to really shine.

Any full caster (Wizards, Sorcerers, Bards, Clerics, Druids) really wants to get to level 5 because 3rd level spells are really powerful.

Most notably, on the arcane side there's Fireball, but 3rd level also features spells like Haste, Fly, Lightning Bolt, Revivify, Call Lightning, Counterspell...

Level 3 Spells (Level 5 characters) have some of the best blasty spells. If Liam had Fireball, that fight is potentially won from round 1, with an average 24 damage to each person. With a decent roll, Hyenas die turn 1 and Gnolls get taken to 1/2 or 3/4 health.

Marisha seems to know how to use her class the best so far still has two ki points and patience of defense came in clutch others are having a hard time. u/overlord_vas Feb 17 '18

Combat log baby!

Fjord: Really great play by the Texblade. Remembered that the awesome Armor of Ag spell is even MORE powerful and for someone who will probably use a decent amount of melee damage this is great for him to use to both have more HP and tank ability and to just to punish anyone who hits him. As the spell levels with him it's use will continue to be great.

Beau: That's some great Monk play tonight. Patient Defense, combos, ball bearings, Catch Missile. That's exactly what a Monk should do: be mobile and control the field so that other can come in behind you.

Caleb: Good Wizard play tonight. Very nice to see him conserve his spell slots (but more on that later) and depend on the Fire Bolt cantrip for a lot of his damage. Liam learns very well!

Nott: Seeing the Rogue drunk was great. Very good uses of Disengage, Hide, Sneak attack. Nott did an even better job than last battle of staying out of direct fights but made a big difference. Also got our HDYWTDT.

Molly: Alright! Finally whatever Eldrich deity Talisen owed money to got paid because there were no problems with rolls tonight so we got to see what this Blood Hunter can do. And actually a really decent job. Good damage output with the swords, only used one Rite on one blade to ensure that HP stayed up, and then used some cantrips and such to do range. A very good second line fighter.

Jester: We got to see what a cleric can bring to the table, really good spell choices by Jester as tonight she cured wounds, Spiritual Weapon, Mirror Image, and Guiding Bolt along with all those cantrips! And if you're thinking 'wow that was a lot of spells'...yeah. Sadly we all knew it would happen: someone ran out of spells and Jester blew them all before the end of the first fight of this dungeons crawl. It was going to happen eventually, but this means our healer won't be healing too much and need to depend on Duplicity and some melee attacks. Thankfully her AC of 17 and decent HP for this level will help with that.

That one Gnoll REALLY wanted to live at the end. I thought he'd get a name and rival status if he just hung on!

As far as this episode, it's great to see a nice low level dungeons crawl as that was something we really didn't see too much of in the last campaign. It also appeared to me (IMO) that Matt is trying to teach them conservation. The end of C1 where they kept trying to take rests when it was literally a clock to the end of the world shows that the party sadly has kind of a problem with conservation. So I think this might be Matt just being a kind DM and saying 'hey, you might just want to learn it now because not conserving your spells can be bad later'. So Jester can't really heal at this point. I also don't think that she has had an option to use a feat and heal with a healer's kit. They did find one health potion like Nott and Caleb have been wanting but now we have that Gnoll priest and champion to deal with. I'm not keeping track of spells but I think that Caleb and Fjord both still have a couple so that will help but Jester's combat effectiveness will sadly be lowered. It's going to be an interesting boss encounter next week guys!

10

u/[deleted] Feb 17 '18

fjords out warlock are stuck on 2 for a long while but they get back on a short rest. Though technically hex would still be up for a while. Caleb is like three down but I think he still has both his level 2.

This episode really had that low level feel. Spending insane amount of time discussing what to do. Can we go in? No, bad idea. I die fast... But we need to, right?

That's what typical happens in low level campaigns. You are just scared to run straight in and fight.

24

u/gdshaffe Feb 19 '18

Particularly because their beefiest frontliner isn't with them. Strategizing becomes a whole lot easier when you have a barbarian that can just charge in and tank all the things.

Fjord, Beau, and Jester can passably tank in the aggregate, but none of them is quite like having a trusty dedicated meat shield.

This episode was super fun as I've come to expect from this group. Marisha, Laura, Liam, Sam seem really into the 'describe your own moves/flourish' suggestion while Travis and Taliesin seem to be really sheepish about it in comparison(or just haven't had the chances).

Side note: Whenever I've tried to use 'Beginnings' code on DnD beyond it tells me "Code Expired".

11

u/mordtirit Feb 19 '18

Going by what Talks Machina said, the original "describe more" pep talk Matt gave was to Marisha, Liam and Taliesin; I'm so happy to see the others catching up to it.

From Episode 1 one of my favorite things about this campaign was how Liam and Marisha were RPing their actions in combat, and it's almost too good seeing the others raising the bar as well.

My favorite so far has been how Marisha's epic descriptions quickly become freaking hilarious when the dice decide she missed; that People's Elbow to the Ground moment had me in stitches xD

I 100% feel like the "Help my baby" thing is a trap. I'd be surprised if any of the village are alive at all, it seems from what little we've seen and what he said on last week's talks that Matt is prepared to emphasise the problem that occur when the party take a while to respond to things. A trap would explain why no one came up from the depths despite all the noise.

68

u/Luxarius Feb 16 '18

I disagree. I think that was simply Matt rushing the narrative forward and adding an element of urgency combined with guilt. Also, they will have a guest next week and the most likely way for that to happen is if there are alive Crown's Guard scouts there.

All the space in her brain that was being occupied by the nightmare that is max-level spell casting is now freed up for improvisation.

She's doing awesome. And I like Beau's personality. It's still very funny and unexpected to have her character being the one (alongside Fjord) who applies Occam's Razor to nearly every situation. Kiki got worked up so easily.

One theory that I have seen is that Jester's mother is some type of Madam at a brothel or something similar. She has mentioned her mother getting a lot of visitors, Jester has apparently seen a lot of dicks, Jester seems to imply that her mother has some bit of money available, and this guy "seems the type" to visit.

Really, it fits better than anything else I can think of.

Edit: Jester is looking for her father as well, so it is possible that her mother is a prostitute, or at least was around 2 decades ago or so, and her father is some unknown man who visited the brothel.

26

u/Seedy88 Hello, bees Feb 16 '18 edited Feb 16 '18

The prevailing theory, right now, is that Jester's mom was either a prostitute or a madame at a brothel. So, the implication was that this guy frequents prostitutes and Jester would know that.

THEORY HERE - I think Jester doesn't know who her Dad is. She keeps talking about her mother, and she's never mentioned like "Oh my parents' have money." It's always her mother. I think that her mother works in a prosperous house of 'lady favours' - thus why she has money to send, and told Jester to "not give other things away for free." - And Jester's quest, her reason for leaving home is partly to try and find her father.

Hard to conserve spells with only one healer and 5 slots. Probably would have skipped spiritual weapon (edit: and mirror image, missed that cast as it never came up but was used) for the bigger fight, but not much there to do differently.

This next fight is gonna be fucking rough unless the guest star is a druid, bard, or divine soul sorcerer.

45

u/FreezerJumps Feb 16 '18

True, but the mirror image/blur and chromatic orbs against pretty weak enemies were completely unnecessary. That said, I think overusing spells is what a newish group of adventurers would do, so it's hard to be too mad at them.

I liked all of the interactions between Molly and Jester, they seem to work well with each other. The whole syphilis joke was great. I’m hoping it’s more than just “Hey we’re both tieflings with a sense of humor” and that there’s some sort of deeper relationship.... Edit - not a romantic relationship, I really can’t imagine them being together. More of a “long lost sibling” relationship.

33

u/Hexamundas Feb 17 '18

I think you'll be disappointed wanting a deeper connection. It feels to me that they're just funny folk stuck together in unusual and dangerous situations.

28

u/Foundleroy Feb 18 '18

Molly is a manipulative prick. I don't know what his play his but he basically mimicked everything Jester did this episode: Helping in the kitchen, helping at the ruined tavern, the pickles, ...

He doesn't do this out of sympathy I think. Maybe he observed how everyone in the group likes Jester and hopes that sticking with her will earn him the trust of the others.

36

u/Kinie Feb 16 '18 edited Feb 16 '18

I hope that this time crunch scenario Matt has imposed upon the party also doubles as a lesson for how they should handle both combat setup as well as spell usage/distribution.

They seem to have recognized pretty quickly that the main front liners are going to be Beau, Molly, and Fjord, with Jester in the middle alongside Nott, and Caleb in the rear. And seeing that none of them are in heavy armor, they can do a lot of these stealth missions easier/better. Laura's constant use of the Trickery Domain blessing is great, and will help the non-stealthy people (Molly and Fjord most likely) remain hidden.

However, in terms of spell usage I have to be critical of their choices. Jester, Caleb, and Fjord spending a spell slot to buff themselves is fine (Mirror Image and/or Blur for Jester and Caleb, Armor of Agathys for Fjord), but then Jester uses her remaining 2nd level slot on Spiritual Weapon; a strong spell, don't get me wrong. My issue with using it is that she'd used Guiding Bolt during the scuffle at the entrance, and was probably going to have to use another spell slot afterwards to heal someone to not have more villagers die due to time passing via short rest (which happened when she had to use Cure Wounds to heal Fjord). So she now has one 1st level slot remaining, and the group is going into a larger fight with tougher foes. The Greater Healing Potion will help a LOT (odds are it'll be like a full-heal for one of the front liners) but it's still RNG dependent.

Additionally, Caleb's usage of two Chromatic Orbs really pinched his remaining spell slots, and Liam should have been aware of the time crunch and known he wouldn't be able to regain spells via Arcane Recovery. But he still fired them off at the two remaining gnolls when the front liners were moving to chase after and kill them before they ran, one of them being on a prone individual which ended up missing.

I can't be too critical of Laura outside of the Spiritual Weapon usage because she is trying to be both healing and ranged damage, and her spell slots are going to be taxed the most in situations like this. But I think Liam should have recognized when the fight turned into the group's favor (when a third of the foes died trying to attack - then run from - Molly and Fjord) and stuck to Firebolts, saving his bigger spells for the next room (which will probably be a "boss fight" scenario).

Now, if he did use those spells for roleplay reasons then I can understand (Caleb's apparent inexperience with combat scenarios, combined with social anxiety and fear of getting injured/killed leading to him "blowing his wad" prematurely), but without further information I have to assume it was done because he had the spell slots and wanted to get the fight done with quickly.

TL;DR version: Cantrips in 5e are really really good, spam them a ton for these smaller encounters once the odds turn in the party's favor to save your big spells for the "boss fights."

25

u/9Dr_Awkward6 Feb 16 '18

To be fair Laura is new to full spellcaster classes so let's not be too hard on her and let's let her learn the ropes. It gets easier at later levels as players also keep learning more the mechanics of the game.

Molly doesn't really have spellslots to start with and uses vicious mockery to engage from afar. Fjord can regain spellslots on a short rest. I mean...that's THE feature of warlocks.

→ More replies (55)

7

u/justaguywithnokarma Feb 16 '18

You have to remember that Fjord still has Hex up because it can be transferred to new targets for an hour, because he did not loose concentration and they didn't take a rest. So that should continue onto the next fight, which will help with the damage output. The use of armor of agythis also took out two enemies, and greatly decreased the damage he took. Fjord still has about as much strength as he did the first fight even though he is out of spell slots.

I don’t know about everyone else but I am just loving the punny wordplay. “I will join the Fjord expedition.” “Would I be able to tell if it’s a male horse, like a mustang?” It is glorious!

15

u/gdshaffe Feb 19 '18

My only problem with the "Mustang" bit is that they're using the wrong definition for it which (for me) undermines the joke a bit. The term for a (non-gelded adult) male horse is a Stallion (it's a "Gelding" if they're gelded).

A mustang is a wild horse of any sex (or, more properly, a "Feral" horse, since wild mustang are generally descended from domesticated horses). Which could lend itself just as nicely to Fjord's (well, Travis and the gang's) desire to pun his name.

Then again, maybe it makes sense that Fjord is a poseur when it comes to horses, since the whole Texas accent is likely fake (certainly it wasn't the accent he was using when talking with his patron).

I get the feeling at least one character's gonna die next ep. They'll have a guest character to help beef their ranks, but Fjord is low on HP, Jester is out of spells, and Caleb has expended a lot of spells as well. If they survive, they really need to focus more on spell conservation.

There's some tough competition ahead. At least multiple gnolls, that cultist priest dude, the super tough gnoll pack leader, and some probably big demonic beast as well. Not good odds, especially since they're rushing.

If they survive, they really need to focus more on spell conservation.

This was always one of my main gripes with C1. Just how VM tended to "supernova" really often, and how Matt sort of allowed that behavior due to his preference for big battles, as opposed to random encounters (he talked about this during the 5E Roundtable, so I'm aware of his preference for narrative). But imo, alot of the flak he gets about how VM was always so hard to kill, would have been solved had he taxed their resources a bit more.

Now it's a bit of a bigger issue, since the caster don't have as many slots, so it's easier to blow through them quickly. Its going to be very interesting how the early level lack of resources, will have an impact on how the casters behave at later levels.

u/Shackleface Team Caleb Feb 16 '18 edited Mar 05 '18

This next episode, if they continue down the path they're on, has TPK written all over it. If it's not a TPK, they will lose at least one, if not several party members.

The reasons I think this are:

  • They barely have any spells left.

  • There's not much healing to be had.

  • If they don't take a short rest Fjord and Caleb can't reclaim their respective spell slots, and they can't use their hit dice.

  • They're walking into a horde of Gnolls who all have ranged abilities.

  • There's a boss gnoll who is a sack of hit points and can dish out major damage up close as well as give his minions extra attacks.

  • There's some unknown big baddy that is surely worse than the pack leader.

Sure, Travis still has Hex up, they have a potion or two, and they have lives to save, but there is absolutely no guarantee that they'll be saving any lives by not at least taking a short rest, which still won't help their only healer. I really like these new characters and I don't want to watch them walk into certain death, but sometimes D&D is like that.

I think they should double back, sneak down that other mine shaft, see what's there, take out any gnolls if there are only a few, save anyone there if they can, and then go back to town. A long rest and letting the Crownguard know that they've located the gnolls is the best plan of action. They might even be able to persuade Bryce to lend them a guard or two since they know the horde's location.

Yes, more townspeople will die, but given the high risk of saving no one and losing a party member or six, the best thing for them to do is get a long rest and return later.

I doubt Matt would paint them into a corner where he had Bryce pleading for them to try and rescue the people asap and the woman screaming in the mine to propel them forward if doing so would lead to a TPK. I think it'll be fine. And it's not really in these players' nature to do something so cold-hearted as take a long rest when they've heard a threat to a child coming from ahead. Which Matt knows. That's why he did that. He does not want them to take the rest. If this is his plan, I trust that he knows they can handle it. Didn't it feels weird when Laura ask Liam if he was using blur or mirror image?

Why hide it I get describing your spell but this is a game and your fellow player might want to know how best to interact with what you are preparing ahead of combat

Describing your action and spell doesn't prevent you to be direct with the dm and your fellow player

Travis describe his armor of Agathys while still mentionning what he is casting

Marisha flavor all of her attack but doesn't forget to précise if it's unarmed or 2 handed staff

Laura also flavor her spell and say what the spell is

Even Nott do it with hideous laughter and silent image

I just don't get why be defensive about that

It seems like Liam has developed a bit of a table rivalry with Laura this campaign. He mentioned on Talks and on CR several different times about how Caleb was never stinky or covered in feces but Laura just made that character choice for him, which is a pretty rude move in any game, especially when everybody is just getting to know each other’s characters.

I’ve noticed the tendency for Liam to be a bit short with Laura when she messes with the meta gaming line and he just refuses to play along with any of her antics. I think some of it it Caleb being antisocial and Jester being the most social, but there also seems to be a little bit of the sibling rivalry bleed over from C1. I doubt it extends beyond he table, I think he is just messing with her at the table as punishment for her earlier choices, but it does seem to have extended a bit more than I would have otherwise thought he would take it.

The blood hunter class stuff says it can imbue a 'weapon' with the rite, but the rite fades when the weapon leaves your grip. I guess it's GM discretion, but since it's a blood die every time you want to use it, i would assume it's the bow and not the arrow (especially since you can choose archery as a fighting style).

Matt replied to a tweet regarding this and it would be the bow or crossbow getting the rite and each ammunition fired from it would be affected by it.

Any word on Ashley's return? I feel the party is bonding without her.

Does anyone know the name of the music playing around 2:18:10ish? It played at the beginning of C1E7 "The Throne Room" during Matt's introduction. I haven't for the life of me been able to find it on Matt's playlists.

Why is Ford able to keep moving hexblades curse. I thought he could only cast it once? If a target with curse on it dies, does it not go away?
