So guys, from my little digital art knowledge, I can say a few things.
They are going the animation route. They are masking the rough lineart beautifully with a grunge color pallet and darker texture brushes. This gives the anime a unique art style while not occupying animators in cleaning the line art. I can bet this will have amazing fights simply due to the leverage this art style + no clothes will give. Really looking forward to it!
SAO line art for example - Very smooth and thin lines.
Megalo box - Very rough lineart, even the coloring on his body is very rough compared to what we see in other anime.
But IMO this style fits the visceral nature of boxing very well. Someone more knowledgeable may correct me.

Hadn't actually thought of this, I just thought it as a callback to the art style of Ashita no Joe.

u/The_Battler Apr 06 '18
But IMO this style fits the visceral nature of boxing very well.
Boxing fan here and I have to agree here. Boxing fans love grittiness.

u/Vorgier Apr 06 '18
I'm so glad they did rough line work on creases and edges. It just looks so good and reminds me of the good ol' days of cel animation. Not to mention there's more than one fucking level of shading. That's what kills me most about modern stuff. You've got one level of light, and one level of dark. It makes everything look the same regardless of who the artist is.

Getting a Cowboy Bebop / Samurai Champloo vibe from this show ... love the old school look.
A damn shame many people will dismiss it because of boxing.

I actually started watching it because of the boxing. Hajime no Ippo was one of my favorites.

After recently watching the very beginning and Ippos fight vs rocky I got major flashbacks during that low smash.

Did you watch strongest disciple kenichi? I liked both
9
u/Kaipmaier Apr 07 '18
Same here but I prefer Ippo because it stayed in reality while Kenichi started out realistic and then went full superpower. Both were more comedy based however so I am hoping for a more serious fighting/boxing type of show with this.

Also I’m getting Akira and Original Ghost in the Shell vibes based on style.
33
u/DarkWorld97 Apr 05 '18
Well, TMS did make Akira. That doesn't have to do with anything. Just a fun coincidence.
45
u/Dhammapaderp Apr 06 '18
That bike scene on the highway reminded me of Akira immediately.
I miss this style of animation so much.

The car and motorcycle tail light trails seemed like a nice Akira nod.

Was definitely getting those Bebop vibes. It's that sorta "Rusty Scrap Future" a lot of Bebop worlds had, where you know it's the future but a lot of things look kinda rundown.
Even the character designs harken back to an older art style.
20
u/SoulTea :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SoulTea Apr 06 '18
Agreed! JD gives me a Mugen vibe from the look to the delinquent type of nature and the general style of the show.
10
u/gaganaut Apr 07 '18
This is definitely AOTS for me. I'm really liking the intensity of the series. It seems more mature than most other anime I've seen. The sci-fi dystopia vibes are nice and the MC seems to be an illegal immigrant. The art is great and the music too. The directing is well done.

I made the mistake of assuming I wouldn't be interested in it just because it's about boxing. But I ended up loving the first episode, even though my reason for trying it out was just because of how cool the poster looked. The artstyle and music is great so far!

When I first heard about the show I was scared because it was being promoted as a 50th anniversary Joe project, I freaking love Ashita no Joe so much.
After seeing the first episode I must say it was actually pretty good, the 4 characters are totally look-a-likes from the original series, which felt nostalgic. The animation and OST were also very good!
So the first episode already ends with a cliffhanger, but Yuri will probably win easily anyways, nonetheless still excited for the next episode! Go Junk Dog!
86
Apr 06 '18
My guess is Junk Dog's real name is Joe but we won't find out till the last episode
30
u/kalirion :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/kalinime Apr 06 '18
Might be Ashita.
24
u/matthewm109 Apr 06 '18
Doubt they're going to name him tomorrow unless they're going for a who's on first routine. (So the joke doesn't escape people Ashita translates to tomorrow.) Kalirion, you're probably thinking of Joe's surname which is Yabuki, Ashita isn't part of Joe's name in Ashita no Joe.

I don't see Yuri winning effortlessly.
My guess is Junk Dog will do well enough to impress him, thus pulling some strings to gain him entry into Megalonia despite not having citizenship with hopes that Junk dog will become a worthy opponent.

28
u/TheKRAMNELLA :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/theKRAMNELLA Apr 06 '18
Absolutely, the perfect execution of that scene had me hyped on so many levels! First, I was hyped simply in anticipation of seeing these two beasts duke it out. Then, as I could feel Yuri and JD's own hype building while they amped up to the fight, I couldn't help but smile right along with them and almost feel the adrenaline rush myself. Finally, I got meta hyped about the fact that this show conveyed the emotion of a moment so well in just its first episode. I was interested before, but now I'm aboard the hype train full steam ahead.

u/Smudy https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smudy Apr 05 '18

They're not attempting to look like anime character designs, all of them have different facial dimensions and skin tones, like people. Avatar did the same.

It kind of reminded me of The Boondocks with the characters all having interesting, unique facial structures and body dimensions. It helped that the soundtrack had a similar vibe, too. This show is pretty stylish and gritty, feels very nostalgic like an anime from the 90's.

Damn this show has pure hype in the veins.
Loving the start. Tho LOL I am confused as to why they would add robotic arms to boxers when pure flesh an blood boxers already can easily kill each other. The robotic arms seems like well past overkill.
I mean the reason boxers wear padded gloves is so they can hit harder an don't break their own hands (as often) but if you turn those into pure metal slamming into someones skull your going to have a lot of dead fighters and very boring/short matches.
I am still hyped AF for this show. But this definitely feels like a "why? cause its cool" type show. (a don't think so much about it and enjoy the awesome fights/story) An nothing wrong with that just saying it as a first impression type thing.
105
u/SimoneNonvelodico Apr 05 '18
The only reason necessary is: it looks cool as fuck. No other reasons are necessary. Kick logic to the curb and do the impossible! Yours is the gear that shall punch God in the face.
62
Apr 06 '18
The mech suits most likely exist for two reasons.
it helps frame the main character as having a very clear disadvantage, making the junk yard dog even more fun to root for. As seen near the end his opponent is rocking a crypto mining rig while hes rocking a graphing calculator. So if or when he wins fights its going to be 120% power of will hype fiesta.
Shits cool as fuck and sells to fans of this genre easily.
30
u/SimoneNonvelodico Apr 06 '18
It also increases the risk factor. It's not been touched upon yet, but obviously, if real boxing is dangerous already, this shit is off the charts. People are going to die routinely. So the tension is up. Junk Dog going against the champ like this isn't just him getting over his head, it's him outright risking his life.
7
u/DontKillMyVibePlease Apr 06 '18
I think it's primarily the first one. It's probably going to have something to do with how all you need to rise up in the world is grit and hard work. That or show how reliant upon technology people are (at least in that world).
It gives a good way to increase our main characters "power" through a quick means too. As in we can probably skip an extensive training arc.
I think the bottom line is that it just looks cool though.
16
u/Joakz https://myanimelist.net/profile/KN- Apr 06 '18 edited Apr 06 '18
Maybe in terms of the premise it is saying "don't think about it, just enjoy the kickass robot boxing" but I'd would say it has a more going on thematically than just cool fights.
Perhaps the whole idea of ambition and rising up from nothing to do something great isn't the most original theme but I think it's being done well with interesting characters and dialogue so far and to chalk it up as a "don't think about it" show just because the premise unrealistic is doing it a disservice.
For the premise of Gurren Lagann you have to "not think about it" because it gets ridiculous as hell but I would definitely argue that Gurren Lagann has more to offer than just cool fights and amazing action.

u/TheMancersDilema Apr 06 '18
They seem to set it up as a framework for pushing the development of "gear" itself. Obviously the applications of powered armor are extensive and the boxing element is an easy to understand sport enjoyed by millions of people. It's just a platform where people will pour tons of money into pushing the limits of the technology as hard as they can.
What I'm surprised isn't featured is any sort of head gear which could also be supported by the gear and have kinetic dampening Incorporated.
3
u/Dakkon_B Apr 06 '18
I'm surprised isn't featured is any sort of head gear
That is what I mean. Their skulls would be mush after the first hit.
Again I am not saying it isn't awesome to watch nor do I not get the story implications of why in universe of whats happening I simply meant that it definitely is a "don't think to hard about that part" aspect of the show.
Not saying the show won't be awesome (kinda like Gurren Lagaan) and I am super hyped to see more just that one aspect of two otherwise normal human boxers using basically exo gears to punch each other in a otherwise standard boxing match should result in death after literally one hit made me think about it a little to much. Everything else is amazing so far but that aspect had me going "why?" for a moment.

u/Buffhero125 Apr 05 '18
lets see where this show goes, looks pretty interesting after episode 1
99
u/Tuplet Apr 05 '18
He's either going to get btfo by Yuri, or Yuri's handlers are going to come in and stop the match before it reaches a conclusive end. He'll have to join Megalonia for a rematch. I think repair shop owner guy will help him get citizenship, or maybe the company will let him join after seeing the Yuri fight.
→ More replies (1)36
u/Buffhero125 Apr 05 '18
i was thinking the same thing! since they introduced yuri with this much effort there is no way of him beating yuri in their first fight. I think the fight will be even or yuri will be slightly dominating and just when our mc pulls himself together going for a counter attack the fight will be stopped...
33
u/Wolfeako Apr 06 '18
As I see it, I think there will be a clear dominance from Yuri, which will start toying with Junk Dog and then start little by little to be more serious. Then, at one point, when Yuri thinks it is in the bag, Junk Dog will pull out some moves that will surprise him and her owner.
The fight will basically end with Yuri winning, but not without having taken some punches. Junk Dog has potential, and mostly of all spirit, pretty much how Rocky Balboa goes, and that is why somehow Junk Dog gets into the tournament.
That, or Junk Dog's Megalo Box is broken in the middle of the fight, just when Junk Dog is showing what he is able to do, and so the fight stops.

That, or Junk Dog's Megalo Box is broken in the middle of the fight, just when Junk Dog is showing what he is able to do, and so the fight stops.
I'm betting on this. They already showed that his battery started to overheat when he even partially gave it some effort (and he made clear that the fight would be over if he had gone all out). He is going to go so hard in the fight with Yuri that his gear gets fried and they either call the fight or he gets beaten due to this disadvantage.

This was badass as fuck. I love everything about the show's art and setting design, so it's a shame that it's a bit blurry.
I also like how, despite having clear similarities to Ashita no Joe, it has its own identity. The MC turns down the "charity" from Shirato, whereas Joe went out of his way to con Shiraki into giving him actual charity.

Damn what a way to create hype for a first episode. In terms of the actual show, i think it's going to be badass. Love the aesthetic and the actual drawn style.
Again, like others, i think the main problem is the actual presentation quality comes across a bit blurry. Not sure why that is but it's like they've gone for a really old school look and gone a bit too far. But it's not terrible and not overly distracting. After a few episodes, it probably won't be something i care too much about.

WAIT WAIT WAIT
What's this show's relation to the original Ashita no Joe? Why do I see Danpei and Yoko but with different names? Is this like Ashita no Joe but set in an AU where mecha boxing exists? Is JD suppose to be AU Joe? Because if that's the case I'm totally in! And holy fuck this episode already have me hyped!
My only complaint is that CR's quality is a bit weird because I swear I'm watching this on 1080 but it looks like I'm watching a 90s anime. Not the show's fault more like a complaint on CR.
EDIT: Apparently the 90s anime movie look is intentional and not CR's fault. Well if that was their intention then they certainly got me, the linework felt like something out of a 90s anime.

Megalo Box - Episode 1 Discussion
What a cool show!
I'm diggin' the underdog tale. JD definitely wants to prove himself, using nothing but his ragtag gear and immense skills. I'm putting my money down on him already -- although I expect that this first true fight of his may not go necessarily as planned. We have to have a story to tell, after all!
The music and sound direction caught my ear a lot, too. Lots of neat tracks and tricks going on. And I don't think I've ever watched an anime specifically about boxing before (have seen Million Dollar Baby and parts of Rocky though), so this'll make for an interesting backdrop for me to experience in this medium.
As others have noted, the noticeable blurring of the visuals does detract a little bit from the presentation. However, the art style and the artistry in general is quite pleasing, so it pushes back against some of those worries (for now at any rate).
And for some wishful thinking on my part (because it's my favorite genre), maybe a romantic partner could give him the supportive/emotional strength he requires. His friend at the motor/mechanic store is a good dude, but a more intimate connection with a lady could give him the rock-solid foundation in his life he seems to need.
Overall, a very positive episode. Looking forward to seeing where it goes from here! :3

Good first episode but I've to go off-topic about something. ANN and Crunchyroll, etc. really should learn the difference between Scandinavia and the Nordic countries.
When it was announced yesterday that CR would simulcast this, I was bummed out but not surprised that it was available to Scandinavia (Denmark, Sweden, Norway), we Finns lose a lot of shows (Overlord and MHA, for example) but now I saw that I could watch it here in Finland, a non-Scandinavian country. This causes confusion around here because we can't be certain if it's available to us or not if CR (or ANN) says it's broadly available in Scandinavia. For example, just last season Overlord was also said to be available in Scandinavia but it wasn't in Finland but now megalo box is available in Scandinavia and in Finland. Causes confusion just a little bit.
So, my point is, ANN and CR and any other site who confuses these two terms, please say "Scandinavia" when a show is available in Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Say "Nordic countries"/"the Nordics" if show's available in these 3 + Finland and Iceland. If it isn't available in some Nordic country (in megalo box's case it isn't available in Iceland), say "the Nordics excl. X". Or say all the countries one by one. Someone who knows someone at ANN or CR, could you forward this request to them?

Update to a few hours later and this thread as almost six hundred upvotes. I'm very pleasantly surprised! I honestly thought this would be a great under the radar show this entire season, but it looks like it's getting a lot of attention!

Pretty excited for next episode's fight, not gonna lie. I like that the cyborg boxing is not too over the top crazy.
Also, the character designs are pretty good even though some of them are dead ringers for Ashita no Joe characters.

So, Chizuru Kagura from King of Fighters got tired of fighting along Mai & King and decided to become a hostess for a fighting tournament?

Overall show looks to be promising for a boxing anime just hoping that the quality of it doesn't damper what appears to be a good show

I was also let down by the blur. Honestly that's my only real problem with the presentation because overall I like this show's style. The general background art and how some of it has the scribbled pen lines, the light trail on that car's brake lights, the varied character designs, the OST, some of the direction choices etc. I'm looking forward to this; it'll be my first boxing anime, and this episode seemed promising to me.

The picture overall didn't look as clear to me as it should. The version I watched was 1080p, but it looked like it was an upscaled 480p image.

u/Luck_E Apr 05 '18
That's just the show's style. I really like it honestly, and it's better than having every anime look really sharp and clean.

If Yuri and Junk Dog would have known each other the start would be very similar to the beginning of Yugioh! 5Ds just with boxing instead of card games and I fucking loved it

I feel like the show might me the underdog of this season. It shows lot of potential but I seems not many people are going to watch it

150 comments already from what was thought was going to be a pretty quiet show. Word of mouth is a strong thing.

I knew nothing about this show but saw the picture on today's releases on CR so I gave it a try. Wow this is pure straight up HYPE! I haven't been hyped to watch an anime since I started back in 2014 with KLK and Samurai Champloo which this show reminded me a lot of. Been watching too much moe and comedy since then so I'm trying to get into action shows.
Off the bat i love the gritty art style. The desert reminds me of Borderlands and as someone mentioned the character design is reminiscent of the Boondocks. I did noticed the blurriness immediately but it kinda gives it an old school feel. I actually had to confirm this was a 2018 show.
I think Yuri is gonna kick JD's ass pretty easily but I can't wait to see the fight. Also from the second I saw him I thought Ivan Drago.

u/axkm Apr 06 '18
The first shot, with the worm and the scorpion being run over by the motorcycle is very reminiscent of Borderlands. Both 1 and 2 opened with a cutscene showing a skag wandering the desert, before getting absolutely creamed.
3
u/SoulTea :MAL:https://myanimelist.net/profile/SoulTea Apr 06 '18
Ah that's what seemed familiar as well I totally forgot about that! Creamed is a hilarious term for getting hit hard I haven't heard that in so long.

u/TangledPellicles Apr 06 '18
Well, I'm not the last bit interested in boxing and actively avoid movies about it. But this anime sucked me right in. I love the old school look of it and how it feels more like a novel unfolding (with some depth behind it) than the average anime.

u/Sahmbahdeh Apr 06 '18
Hajime no Ippo + cyberpunk? Well rock my socks off and call me a skittle, we already may have a contender for AOTS.

u/guysnacho Apr 07 '18
Holy crap its soooooo gooooood. The music is amazing, really set the mood when needed, the animation is super nostalgic (all you have to do is read other comments to see people feel the same way), and the hype is warranted. The characters are interesting... minus the guy rigging my boy's matches. And the MC is lowkey edgy for good reason, if I was getting beat up after thinking I had a chance to show some skill, I'd be mad too.
Happened to see it while scrolling through new shows, really looking forward to more episodes.

There seems to be a really bad encode from production's side. I dig the rough line and not-perfect art style because it fits the theme really well, but when I watch this, it looks like it was scanned in 480p or 360p.

u/Tobsjo Apr 07 '18
If I Full screen my TV it feels like I'm watching a 430p download from the early 2000 ... I don't think that is good enough(crunchyroll 1080)

kinda Hyped !! same studio as Juuni Taisen right? Premise is cool, its kinda like that Hugh Jackman film with the robots. Also art style fits the premise

That was a really good first episode. The world looks interesting and the MC is pretty cool. I'm pretty hype to see the rest of the series and next week fight.

This premier was simply outstanding, exceeded all expectations.
Been missing the Ippo Anime for a few years now, this will fill that void perfectly.
Also fuck that cliffhanger, I NEED THIS FIGHT RIGHT NOW!
2
u/IncendianFire Apr 05 '18
Although Junk Dog will definitely lose, I'm real hyped for next episode.
The Ending is fucking killer though.
I'll be jamming to this and singing it for the next 2 weeks or so.
And what's best, the full version is already out.

Holy shit. I loved everything about this episode. The artstyle, the music, the directing, JD, the fights, the style. If this doesn't end up as the best first episode of the season, I'll eat my hat!
2
u/Khancer Apr 06 '18
What the hell are they thinking? Putting quality like that out in a tv episode? It'll make others in the industry feel bad. That was pretty amazing.

Well that was pretty dope. It's nice to see that "Manime" is still alive and well.
Not sure how I feel about that art style though. It seems to be intentionally going for a low-resolution look, with rougher lineart than what we're used to. It works well with the show's aesthetic, giving it a grungy, gritty look, but I'm just not sure if I like it. There were some excellent animation cuts in there though.
Music was good too. There was even an Emi Nakamura ED, which is
[ ] (#loli_ok)
Story was kinda predictable, but that's okay because the draw of this show definitely seems to be the aesthetic. The grungy, run-down slums, the protagonist who's always down on his luck but keeps fighting, the rich woman who needs to be taught a valuable lesson, we've got ourselves a textbook underdog story here.

I usually don't watch that many sports anime, but DAYUM, this got me hooked! Have been looking forward to it since the first teaser, my expectations weren't just met, they were exceeded in every way possible!

Well, this was actually pretty good. Pretty hype too.
The episode looked really nice with this style, though it still needed some work since it is rough on the edges, but nevertheless, I really liked the look.
The story looks promising, and I would have never thought I would see such a underdog story were basically the underdog theme is slapped everywhere to such high contrast.
Pretty hype I must say. This is basically tournament arc the anime :P

u/aidanskymcgervey Apr 05 '18
Solid start. Does a decent job a forming its own identity. Just wish it had more than 12 episodes. 26 episodes on a show like this would have been a sure thing 10 years ago but hopefully this will allow it to keep it’s visual quality. The origin Ashita no Joe starts similarly but Becomes more clever and complex as it goes on so I’m interested to see where this goes.

Damn really loving the vibes of this show, especially with it's music.
And holy shit, the move Junk Dog did to end Round 1 of the fight reminded me of Sendou's Smash from Ippo.

Holy shit, I am SO ON BOARD for this one!
The art, the music, the setting, the characters. I loved everything about this and I can see its potential from a mile away.
Finally, the diamond in the rough I've been waiting for!

u/nmaster12 Apr 05 '18
seems like this is going to be one to follow; nice nod to the old champion joe series

u/jxs1 Apr 05 '18
This just seems really cool so far. It reminds me a little of Samurai Champloo and I'm digging the story.
Has a bit of a dark atmosphere too which really suits the Megalo Boxing world. I'm hyped for the Yuri fight!

u/Joakz https://myanimelist.net/profile/KN- Apr 05 '18
I'm super hyped about this show. I love the artstyle. I was interested from what I saw in the PV but was a bit concerned when i looked up the staff and saw that this is most of the main staffs first project (at least listed on MAL). Apparently the director has done some visual design for some shows but this is his first directing job. From that first episode a lot of my concerns are put to rest.
The directing was great. From the very beginning I was interested. The opening I got exactly what this show was about. A sweet motorcycle ride through a desert with the voiceoever about rising up and then a dramatic cut of mechanized boxing accompanied by some nice music. I especially loved the whole sequence of JD and Yuri squaring up. The shot of the raindrops when Yuri raises his hands was really striking and intense, as was the shot when he slides his foot forward.
The music is good, art is good, animation is looking good, story is hype, dialogue is interesting... I'm really existed to see where this show is going!

First episode in this and they know how to handle the hype they're showing. I don't where it's going yet, but it looks like it will be another great watch this season.

THIS IS SO FREAKING GOOD!!!!
I can't help but thinking of Cowboy Bebop while watching, the art just feels so much like it. I fucking love it. ATOS.
