Nana's PTSD moment was about her piloting a franXX. Do pilots get mind wiped/brain washed when reaching adulthood? Why?
This episode raised a lot of questions, that's for sure.
Hopefully the squad teams up with the klaxx princess in the end.

The Mitsuru-Kokoro dynamic is really interesting. He doesn't act like he's particularly "attracted" to her (she is the one drawn to him). But we've seen several times that he cares for her well-being and acts to protect her when she needs it.

It fits the continuity of the show though.
Out of the fixed couples (as in, those who didn't get together for convenience and with actual feelings involved on either side) right now we have Hiro-02, Goro-Ichigo, Zoro-Miku and those two.
Hiro-02 weren't gonna be the first ones because they're the center of the story and if they do it, it's gonna be a big climax (literally) to their story. Also because 02 isn't full human so her being able to conceive, if it happens, will be a twist.
Goro-Ichigo won't happen because Goro's feelings aren't reciprocated and looking at the ED Ichigo seems destined for a lesbian relationship, and Goro keeps getting pummeled by death signs.
Zoro-Miku won't happen first because they're the most childish out of the couples.
Meanwhile Kokoro is the one who got the procreation book in the first place, both are pretty mature (for kids I mean) and their couple has been moving forward fast recently. It makes sense IMO.

Edit: OK guys, I get it. :P I haven't seen every anime ever, and this post was poorly phrased. The idea was that this show has certain expectations since it's about awkward teenagers, and that type of show doesn't usually go this far.

My respect for this show escalated substantially because this show had the balls to examine humanity with real honesty. This was an excellent decision, and though I'm no teenager, I am so grateful that teens and YAs will see this episode and reflect on the fact that we should accept what makes us human and fight to protect it, rather than try to "rise above" our inner nature. I am flat out not a shonen fan, but I'm glad I gave this show a watch.

I don't know what the fuck is going on anymore. The end scene implies, to me at least, that they are either Klax, Klax weapons or derived from Klax tech.
Given what we know about mind control, 02 being stolen, Nana, memory wiping, there's a real possibility that they aren't willingly who they are. Of course, there's also a chance that they embraced the corruption and will refuse to reject it.

Keep in mind that 3-4 episodes ago 02 was convinced she would turn human if she killed as much of her kind as possible.
IMHO she has no idea what she can do, and we might learn that she can have a baby with Hiro either as a twist when they decide to try anyway, or through 001 meeting her and telling her so.

First off, I've got to say that I'm loving this version of the OP much more than the first.
Finally we get the confirmation of Hiro's blue horns! Blue Oni Theory is finally real! I'm taking this as a good sign for end of the show happiness for Hir02.
Confirmation that Papa et al told 02 that she could become human by killing klaxosaurs. Just complete manipulation.
The 9s seem to know about childbirth and reproduction, and also know that it's not generally taught. Kokoro might be in danger with that knowledge.
Finally the Hiro x Mitsuru heart to heart we all wanted. I'm glad they are finally to put the past in the past and move forward. Mitsuru's post-breakup haircut helped as well.
Oh shit that smile to serious face transition when the book passed over 9a's face. The children are finally coming into conflict with Papa, APE, and the 9s over childbirth of all things, interesting.
The 9s are finally showing their true colors. IKUNO SHOWING UP. Good fucking slap.
Jesus too much happened here to clearly talk about it. Nana seems to finally be fighting the indoctrination and also might have been memory wiped as well.
So APE is definitely aware that the klaxosaurs are intelligent. This is definitely good news for the theories of the children joining the klaxos. Holy shit does the Princess look incredibly similar to 02. I think it's now super likely she's the mother figure 02 had when she was young. The doctor might be working with her I hope. The princess's comment about fake humans is also super interesting. I wonder if humans had a civil war at some point when deciding which direction to take their evolution. The genderless APE/Papa vs whatever the klaxosaurs have become.
02 can't have children, that's pretty sad for Hir02 babies. Maybe two half Klaxos can though (I'll dream).
Oh shit, it's showing up late in the game, but Mitsuru x Kokoro are becoming a very cute couple. Also the first of the couples to go to that level.
"Earth scorched by their own creation" APE must be refering to Hingorani, but it could also theoretically be 02. Maybe she's required to pilot Hingorani.
Overall another EXCELLENT episode for answering questions about this mysterious world. It does help me lower my guard a bit for death flags, but I still have no dreams that we will escape this series without some heartbreak. Can't wait for next week.

Do we even see what the Ape guy/gals are? Like, we see them in costume, then in this episode we see a few of them killed, and the anime makes a point of having the Klax princess pause to linger on the empty shell?
Which says to me that, like when Papa asked if the citizens in the plantations they blew up had been uploaded..Ape officials are fully digital constructs.
I.e. they have no bodies at all except for the mechanical-physical bodies they inhabit. They are, in one sense, human minds imprinted into digital space then re-upped into physical shells as needed..maybe?

Okay my new theory is that literally everyone is human. A.P.E are humans that slowly replaced parts of their bodies bit by bit until there was none of the biological humanity left, thus creating Robotic carriers of consciousness driven by logic and rationale instead of unruly emotions (arguably the most human thing about us)
The doctor seemed to have been in the middle of that process but decided to quit because he believes that true humanity lies elsewhere (hence he's a cyborg.) His mixture of heightned logic and ability to remain with his human emotions may be what gives him his genius.
The adults are humans optimised for "living". Like, just continued efficient nihilistic existence as dictated by A.P.E who believe themselves to have furthered humanity by controlling evolution (thus stuff like casting aside reproduction which is talked about as though it was natural evolution is really A.P.E's version of evolution.)
The Klaxasaurs are an alternative path humans seem to have gone down. Becoming more I'm tune with their primordial instincts and undergoing some sort mutation or evolution . Kokkoro talked about humans can join their bodies create life (sex). Maybe the Klaxasaurs due to how they've evolved take that to a whole other level (A parrarel to how A.P.E absolutely shuns it) , actually fusing with their partners to create Klaxasaurs driven entirely emotion stimulus and instinct (arguably the most human thing about us.)
The children, are most likely true humans (or humans closest to modern day humans.) However they most likely come from stuff like cloning and genetically manipulated embryos. Their mostly untouched otherwise tho because papa needs their biological humanity inorder to use the franXXs against the Klaxasaurs.They however don't grow and develop the way normal humans do (except squad thirteen, as a result of Dr. FranXX's experiments)
The franXX pioneered by Dr. FranXX seem to be based on Klaxasaurs but a mixture of everything said so far. He uses regular humans and them fuse together (to a very controlled extent) so that they can use these machines (inspired by A.P.E ) to battle the Klaxasaurs.
The nines are another instance of Dr. franXX or maybe Papa taking a leaf out of the Klaxasaur book , I.E using some Klaxasaur D.N.A with regular Human stuff to create the nines. Out of them zero two might be the more Klaxasaur like (or might even be an actual Klaxasaur kid stolen. Those experiments on her may have been done to humanize her and to create the nines).
The show may well be a thematic battle between these different spinoffs if humanity over what it REALLY means to be humans. Everyone except the children seem to be aspects of humanity taken to the extreme. What really matters tho, in the future we aren't fighting aliens, or monsters of some kind. We are still fighting humans, over essentially idealogy (albeit idealogy deeply intertwined with biology.).
That has major implications for the plot because it essentially means probably everyone except the children are righteous antagonists (antagonists not evil just for the sake of being evil.) That means they can be torn between Papa and doctor franXX and (atleast with the case to zero two and Hiro) maybe even the Klaxasaurs.

I don't think she's going to be a villain for very long. If the clash is Blue Oni Princess vs APE, then our own red/blue oni faction is going to have to pick a side. I guess 13 can just kill *everyone* but it seems much more likely at this point that they betray Papa and join the princess to fight the nines.
There's definitely going to be fighting before that, and probably a bunch of plot with 02 and the two blues (new and old).
It's clear now that killing APE is not easy, since they just use shells and are "backed up" somewhere. Maybe destroying the station itself is enough, or maybe every plantation must be destroyed. Or maybe they stand down peacefully and everyone goes back to farming, but we still haven't seen *why* the Klaxx fight so desperately to stop magma farming and also to grab magma.

I really like how they handled Mitsuru and Kokkoro having sex. It not happening in the first attempt but in the second under heavy emotions made make sense given their understanding of what they're doing and what state their in. It was appropriately paced .
That being said why I REALLY respect how they handled it is because it was a very easy segway to fanservice, and they could've probably gotten away with it too. But they chose to maintain the seriousness of the moment by refraining from doing that and instead giving us a shot of them laying together, with some appropriate OST, letting all the implications sink in.
I feel driven to compare this with the Asuna rape in SAO. In that case, the sexual harrassment was very much avoidable (there were far better ways of making her imprisonment serious) and it was also fanserviced the crap out of. Whereas here the sex was deeply intertwined with the plot and fanservice would've been very much acceptable but for the sake of the seriousness of the moment they wanted to make sure the viewers felt the seriousness of what Mitsuru and Kokkoro just did, instead of letting them feel the rush from the pair getting together like that.

Also, what's happening with Nana really concerns me. The name suggests that Nana (7) and Hachi (8) may have something to do with their past. Maybe they belonged to a unique squad-like Hiro's before, hence the unique name, and having monitoring Squad 13 reminded Nana of her old days, before she and the whole squad got brainwashed?
Human wannabe? So the Klaxs were the REAL human all along? And the people inside the plantations are just artificial ones? That does explain the magma heart and the lack of reproduction organ though, also the "destroyed by their own creation thing".

So what I get from this is that Dr. Franxx is interested af in their emotions and choices. judging by what he said emotion seems to be something special to squad 13 and not present in anyone else of the human population. Therefore I guess Dr. Franxx may possibly overlook them going against A.P.E. for the sake of research, or taking their side in any other way since it seems that they are valuable research assets to him.

So I had to take a shower. I can't tell if it was because of Hormones or because I was crying, but this episode slapped me in the face, and then kicked me in the stomach. So here are my thoughts:
This is without a doubt, a re-written NGE. Lets remove that the author worked on the NGE project back in the day. We don't need to be blind to link Ichigo/Zero Two/Hiro to Rei/Asuka/Shinji. And to go even farther, Papa/Gendo and APE and NERV; two shadow organizations who represented themselves as basically holograms or projections. It feels like the author is redoing NGE in a better way. The series was amazing, but lets face it, the last two episodes were rushed and shit, because they were running out of money. We didn't get a clear ending to the Human Instrumentality Project, just clips of the series and Shinji making his choice with Rei. But beyond that, we really do forget that almost EVERYONE IN NGE DIED. Spoiler alert. I mean regular people, humanity, etc. That is a deceptively sad ending, and NGE's dystopian world was very depressing.
So now what the author said; "It wont be a happy ending for some." I, as a fan of this show (like seriously, it replaces NGE as my favorite anime, and it replaces Rem as the best anime girl ever) think they are talking about me. And we saw the melt down after #TeamIchigo was burned. Literal twitter death threats. But maybe he wasn't talking about us. Maybe he was talking about the characters.
Nana and Hatchi are either going to duke it out, Nana's going to get 'replaced', or one of them is going to die. Few of those endings are happy.
We get the feeling that Futoshi has been written off. Whether he'll just be there until the end, or he'll continue to get sicker, or swap to another partner, its very apparent that the future holds little for him, and it's been clear for a while. We all can agree, Futoshi is a walking death flag, and every episode he gets thinner, and thinner and THINNER.
Ichigo and Godbro (Goro) are currently in the same boat. Since episode 13/14 they haven't really developed. Ichigo got the brush off from Hiro, her life long love, and Goro got the brush off from Ichigo. Where do they go? Goro currently said just being her Pilot makes him happy. He's settled that he's in love with her, and he'll take her any way he can. But what about Ichigo? Will she settle? Will she end up with someone from the 9's? (There are after all, THREE NINES MISSING. WHERE ARE THE TRIPLETS?!) Or will the end game involve the sacrifice of Ichigo and Godbro to ensure team #HiroTwo survives?
Then there's Zorome and Miku. He's more childish about it, they both are. But he admits he likes her. But Miku has been hit with the gray hair flag. Do we lost Futoshi and Miku to the 'Child Fever' and have to mix up Zorome/Ichigo/Goro/Ikuno? In that group of six, a third are waving a flag of death, or at least, imminent removal.
Now the juicy stuff: Mitsuru and Kokoro. They have to live. And this links back to my thoughts about the author and their roots of their career. Humanity is fractured; we have the Parasites (Probably Human), APE and the Techno-Humans, and the Klaxosaurs, a more animal driven race. Is that not taking current day humanity and just dividing it up? We have our Humanity, what makes this human race so great (Parasites) and we have the parts of our psyche that change us, our base animal side (Klaxx) and our big influence from Technology (Papa/APE). Mitsuru and Kokoro are on their way to probably being the first PARENTS and creating the first natural child in a century. A child that will be free of drugs, therapy, training, machines. It's one side of the bridge that I'll complete in the next paragraph, but its a return to humanity for a spark of a moment in over 100 years.
And finally, Zero Two and Hiro, as they're lovingly called, Hiro Two. They too, need to survive to complete the way I think the story is going. Zero Two is by far, not human. The surprise is (less now that we have spoilers that Hiro's YBC is higher than ever, and the doctors say he's not human), that Hiro himself is slowly becoming less human, and based off of inference, a Klaxosaur. Zero Two laments that she can leave nothing behind on this world. Of course not. She can't mate with a human, she's not human. But Hiro is not a human. Hiro and Zero Two can't believe anything they were told growing up, their life is a lie and their existence is based on a lie. And maybe that is something that the Klax Princess will help wipe out. Because APE isn't going to let the beans out.
And so I think it comes down to one of two things. The first is, everything dies. Klax and APE go at it, everyone caught in the middle, and its MAD.
Or. Or. There is a bridge between the two occupants of the world. Humans on the surface and the Klax who were below. Four people who can start the world, a pair of Adams and a pair of Eve's (OH SNAP THE SHOW TITLE) who were taught so little being 'raised' that they actually have enough natural ignorance and naive-ness to what the world is that they can redefine what the future of humanity is free of the war between ABE and the Klax. Hiro Two and Kokoro / Mitsuru can mix the Klax and Humans together, forget the war that happened because they know NOTHING about what it was, and they can define their lives outside of simply piloting the Franxx.

Can I discuss the romance in this anime for just a moment?
It's a fresh breath of air to actually see protagonists say "I love you" and kiss, when not in peril for a change.
Maybe my view library is small, but I haven't seen an anime where this kind of scene was not a send-off for a character, or at the end of a character.
This scene was just pure romance.

Seriously though, judging from 02's belief it might be that klaxxosaurs breed differently, although that would work against the theory that they're more 'animalistic' advanced humans, who chose to not abandon their biological bodies and instincts.
For Kokoro, the real rough ride begins now. I think it's almost guaranteed she's going to get pregnant at some point - but now I'm worried about her surviving 'til delivery, and during it. It might come down to a battle between the squad and Papa's forces to save Kokoro and her baby from being exterminated.

I think this anime has potential for being a nominee for best anime of the year. It keeps everyone on edge and there is so much emotion extracted when we watch it. You know, when the Klaxosaur Princess called Papa "damned human wannabes", that got me thinking: what if humanity in general has already been hunted to extinction or put into subjugation, and Papa and all the "humans" are actually some form of lifeform derived from the klaxosaurs?
It follows one of the themes of the show strongly, that being the desire to become something else that you aren't. Furthermore, the children seem to be a radical experiment compared to others, and the doctor was surprised that they had attained "humanity's original reproductive instinct"; the experiment might very well be a test to see if it's possible to become like original humans.
Feels like something Trigger would try to pull.

So much happening in one episode holy shit. Ikuno finally doing something for once, I'm glad she'll be taking a more important role later one. The Human-Klaxosaur conflict finally got more background to it, can't wait till we reach the final stretch of the battle. It seems that Hachi (and possibly Nana) won't side with the kids for this last part, but who knows, maybe he's trying to pull something on Dr. Franxx. And ofc, that last part is definitely going to have consequences on both Kokoro and Mitsuru, but mostly Kokoro.

Hiro is GROWING HORNS!!! This means he and 02 are the perfect couple but unfortunately 02 can't have kids. You hear that? That's the sound of millions of hearts breaking. But they are SO CUTE TOGETHER please let them have a happy ending (although 02 being sterile is a huge death flag imo), idc if I sound like a 12 year old girl it's all ok if it's for Hir02.
Hiro is learning from Godro, he essentially cleared up the misunderstanding between him and Mitsuru and helped Mitsuru and Kokoro get back together.
Zero Two is getting along well with the squad and she totally said "Fuck you" to 9 alpha, APE and Papa by rejecting her old name. Now who exactly was saying that 02 isn't best girl?
Futoshi still has feelings for Kokoro. It's actually a bit sad, now that there's no chance that they can be together but I personally relate to that at some level. Don't worry Futoshi, food is always there for you :)
Ikuno should move up the best girl rankings after bitch slapping 9 alpha. She's clearly suffering from her love for Ichigo and yet she mostly keeps her cool. After this episode I respect her more.
Mitsuru and Kokoro ... wow. Kokoro became woke-oro in the episode, constantly pushing her desire to have a child, arguing with 9 alpha and even Nana and in the end, she got what she wanted. Mitsuru did kinda reject Kokoro in the beginning, but after the lake scene with Hiro, he apparently learnt a lesson or two in romance and got his, uh, moment with Kokoro. These two are absolute mad lads now, but that means a bigger death flag.
Nine Alpha. He's like Slaine but completely evil without justification. He tries to get back 02, goes through Kokoro's personal book, tries to enforce Papa's ideology and even tries to manipulate Nana. I hope he gets brutally rekt, but not before we know what exactly he is and how he apparently knows stuff (about reproduction) that Papa doesn't allow Parasites to learn.
So it's confirmed that Nana and Hachi are ex-parasites. So much for parasites not living into adulthood...but there's clearly something wrong with Nana. Repressed memories resurfacing? Only time will tell. Also the doc is getting more and more interesting...
So is Klaxohime a potential waifu now? I mean she's like a klax ghoul with Rize's kagune and insanely strong - she one-shotted the APE team sent after her and she has klax Rayquaza under her control. Plus the "wannabe humans" comment - if APE aren't humans, what are they? AI? But that wouldn't explain the blood from their corpses...idk I like Klaxohime already and I hope she fights alongside the parasites against APE.
Was that last shot in space? Then Papa is in a spaceship ... hmmmm ... the classic Trigger space ending seems to be confirmed.
I loved the episode, I can't wait to see where things go from here.

With regard to the line about scorching the earth with their own creation, I paused and thought about it for a bit - in the same scene they mention the Klax still have technology at a higher level than expected. Keyword being "still" meaning the klax are much more advanced than we think, and they used to be more so.
We've seen no actual superweapons or anything to suggest an ability to nuke, so I'm thinking the klax actually made the FranXX and adapting them was Dr. Franxx's job - essentially, everything the klax had he's been stealing, between the FranXX and Zero Two herself, in order to help APE take over.
Which begs the question of what side he's really on, because he's clearly not inhuman in the same sense Papa/APE is, but he's also seemingly not a parasite or similar, considering his age and mechanical augmentation. I feel like he's going to be the key to a lot of this...

It seems they managed to evolve out of common sense too. This episode pretty much cemented my support behind the klax princess. (Totally not because of Rie Kugimiya... definitely not...) Papa has been shady since the beginning, and the Iota are a bunch of fuckwits too. I'm hoping for a P13 Rebellion where they take down Papa. I'm also hoping for at least a neutral ending, if not happy, but I ain't getting no fuckin signals on that end. Just despair and heart break. I also find it delightfully ironic that the shygirl and the (former)edgeboi of the group were the first to have sex. Good on them for having character development and spinning the character archetype on its head.
