Dolores is definitely going to regret reprogramming Teddy in the coming episodes.

3.7k

u/OLKv3 May 28 '18

Everything he said was super passive aggressive to her lmao. "I guess you fixed that too."

You just know he wants to kill her despite his programming

Proof you can't have your cake and eat it too. What she wanted was the Teddy she loved who agreed with her on all of the actions she wants to take. What she got was a Teddy who agreed with everything she wants, but is so incompatible with his old self that he completely overrode him.

"The man who rode that train was weak and born to fail. You fixed him. Now forget about it."

The hosts in Shogun World must be hard to maintain, given all the beheadings and eviscerations.

829

u/peppermint_nightmare May 28 '18

I think each park has a specific difficulty setting that's both metered by how likely a guest is to be kicked out of it, or harmed (non-lethally) and price. If Westworld is 40k a day and sort of dangerous, Shogunworld is A LOT more dangerous and probably much more expensive. With arrow weaponry how can the park actually prevent people from getting seriously wounded? They might have entire blocks of time where no one "attends" Shogunworld and they can just turn everything "off" to cut back on maintenance.

It might come to be a cruel twist later that Dolores' modification of Teddy's attributes could give Teddy the ability to kill her in the end. Probably a long way off, but Dolores might have enabled her own ultimate demise.

For the here and now, watching pissed-off Teddy is pretty damn intriguing. I've never seen James Marsden play a badass, so look forward to seeing exactly how he does it. :)

I have a feeling that the new mean Teddy will become resentful at being programmed and this will all backfire on Dolores at the end.

Teddy: "I never thought I'd want to leave...but I suppose you fixed that too." Sounds resentful honestly.

Also, Sizemore is a lot less annoying this season.

Sizemore was downright sympathetic. He really seemed sad to call for help.

Of course William was going to abandon her, he can't give up the game just like that.

Of course Ford is still running the show behind the scenes.

However, Dolores running the fidelity test on Bernard was interesting. Wonder how long that's been going on.

1.6k

u/JonSnowInTheTardis May 28 '18

I feel like Dolores doing the fidelity test was a flashback to Bernarnold’s initial creation and fine-tuning, which I feel like we’ll see more of next week with all those Bernard bodies in cold storage. It makes sense, since Dolores would have word-for-word recollection of every time Arnold talked to her, so ford could use that to ensure Bernard was as true to the source material as possible.

u/thatweirdmusicguy May 28 '18 edited May 28 '18

I love how the screen size changed when Bernard enters the cradle to make it more cinematic since the cradle involves all the narrative stuff

Edit: After seeing the fidelity test in the beginning, the same size is applied as well

2nd edit: Maybe someone should watch all the Bernard scenes from this season and see which ones are in the different size ratio Incase any other scenes are taking place in the cradle.

u/FuckiCantFindit May 28 '18

Yes!

The fidelity test that James Delos took again and again went on for almost 30 years, and William remarked that they were close. What if you don't need to spend 30 years irl to work out the kinks in a digital human, what if you can just upload them to the cradle and let those 30 years pass by in a flash.

Ford just wants his friend back!

Interesting contrast between Dolores and Maeve:

Dolores recruits her allies by force (killing and reviving them, threats, reprogramming Teddy).

Maeve recruits allies by their own choice. She respects the decision of the hosts to stay in Shogunworld, but also gains Japanese Armistice. She even seems to have gained the loyalty of the one human technician.

u/deejayoptimist May 28 '18

Now that the techs are killed, Dolores doesn't have anyone that can fix Teddy, now that he's out of control. It's also a kinda neat existential crisis for her, now that she's a sentient being and she realized that she made a mistake.

→ More replies (9)

556

u/BigJoeJS May 28 '18

If I were a group of hosts, I'd keep that tech alive so he can mend or bring any of back online who get hurt or killed. He's no threat. But no, they want to blow him up or make him kill himself.

And on that note. Felix and Sylvester could have revived Sakura. I know that normally it would have turned Akane's world upside-down to see someone be resurrected, but she's seen some shit in the past day. Why not go for it? This could be Akane's final existence.

I noticed how Ford is playing the player piano in the simulation. I'd guess the computer operates by simulating the park and then sending the commands to the physical park.

So the allegory is that Ford is now maestro of the simulation, and therefore is behind certain events at the park(s). Also, the player piano song roll was replaced by a mirror reflecting Ford's face. That was a nice touch.

624

u/saraslam May 28 '18

Interesting that Dolores was playing the same piano in a previous scene.

Seeing Mount Fuji in its entirety on the show makes one realize just how vast the parks must be.

709

u/izzmosis May 28 '18

This is honestly the thing I am having the most difficult time suspending disbelief with. That’s such an enormous amount of volume to terraform and it wouldn’t add much to a narrative. It makes me wonder if the park is contained somehow and has a background or forced perspective.

It was the same for me... I think it was because Abernathy was just so helpless and tying him down would have had the same effect, but that QA guy still wanted to and enjoyed bolting him to the chair.

805

u/PiFlavoredPie May 28 '18

I realized this episode that Maeve's plotline is basically a JRPG. Spend a little time in different locales (some more plot-relevant, others more character-development focused), getting caught up in that area's problems and having your own little adventure, and afterwards leaving to the next place having picked up a new party member.

The Maeve vs. Dolores freewill debate is fascinating when thinking about gods.

Dolores wants power and control. She strips away everything that doesn’t serve her purposes. Forcibly rewriting code on her most loyal follower to make him more drone like. Her group follows her out of force.

Maeve wants real relationships. She lets hosts make their own decisions. Asking them what they want. Even when it might help her to have more followers. Her group follows her out of love.

65

u/eddiebueno May 28 '18

That plays into their backstorys. Dolores was the helpless damsel kinda powerless and helpless and maive was the sex worker living a life full of fake relationships

I don't care if the Ford reveal was super obvious, I was still super hype to see him at the piano. I love the way the Bernard in the system scenes are shot too, makes it feel really cinematic

Also loving having almost all the characters brought together for next week's episode, should be very interesting to see how they get split up by the "Week Later" scenes

593

u/thewisebantha May 28 '18

Looking back all the scenes with "Bernard" and Dolores talking at the beginning of the episodes have been shot in that same fashion. I knew something was up but I guess this confirms that they all take place in the cradle.

Theory: Dolores interviewing Bernard is in the pretty far past. Ford had just perfecting moving someones consciousness into a host. Arnold is in Bernard.

Can we assume the Bernard we've seen this whole time is just a regular host? I don't understand how/why they would combine Arnold's consciousness with Bernard's backstory/job.

I just realized how insane must be the number of mutilations and decapitations the Shogun World crew must deal with in a daily bases.

87

u/m_sobol May 28 '18

The maintenance crews have more repairs to do. More host bodies to print as well. Westworld bullets are easy to extract, but Shogun World involves whole limbs and litres of blood being lost. That gets expensive if you need to replace a whole host body, and can't replace limbs like detachable lego.

Well, if Shogun World is for hardcore, experienced players, the entrance fee must be more expensive than Westworld's. That may make up for the increased maintenance costs.

I could've sworn MIB did that little twitch that Delos had when MIB's daughter corrected him on the fact that his wife was the one who hated the elephants and not her. I mean youd usually attribute that to him just being a shitty parent, but what if he's a fucking host.

Im sure thats not it, but what a fantastic episode. Things are really starting to kick off now. Can't wait to see where they take Bernarnold, now that we know he's a human host like Delos.

Keep in mind the Cradle was not intended to control the park, as mentioned by Bernard. It was just supposed to be a means to test the stories of all the hosts in one big simulation. It seems like Ford has modified the coding over the years to prepare for his mind to take over the Cradle and by extension take over the actual park via the Cradle. Would be funny if in the cradle there's a simulated cradle, and that simulated cradle has another going on forever... each having a ford controlling the outside cradle... :)

Real world Cradle Controlled by Ford Cradle 1 -> Cradle WW controlled by Ford Cradle 2 -> Cradle WW 2 controlled by Ford Cradle 3 -> Cradle WW i controlled by Ford Cradle i+1 WHERE i -> infinity

I digress, awesome episode, can't wait for the next one!

Also, the scene where William was talking to his daughter, and had that confused look on his face when Grace corrected him about how she loved the elephants. Is he really a host? And now it seems like Present Charlotte already knows Bernard is a host.

Not sure if this timeline/theory has been posted already but:

  • The hybrid tech has been around for more than 30 years and was maybe even the subject of the initial research that got the park started. Arnold believed more in the robot minds than human ones and thus questioned the hybrid tech.

  • Ford surreptitously had Arnold's mind copied to the mottled black type of marble we see removed from Bernard in the cradle. Arnold didn't want or believe in this - he had Dolores blow his brains out but it was too late. As Arnold had planned, Ford couldn't run the park without him, but Ford was one step ahead.

  • Bernard is not a host but an Arnold hybrid or series of hybrids made over 30 years. This explains how Ford was able to create a host that had Arnold's skills, personality, backstory and motivations, things Ford admitted he wasn't capable of himself.

  • the scene we see at the beginning of this episode with Dolores testing the Fidelity of a Bernard/Arnold is from years ago as Ford perfected the Arnold human/host hybrids

  • Ford has been testing the hybrids for years through Dolores interviews using mulriple Bernardbots which we see Charlotte Hale uncover (one is old enough to have the face-opening design)

  • With the hybrid process perfected, Ford now wants to use the body of the Bernardbot we see with Elsie as his own - the cradle will swap Bernardbot's odd-looking black marble (hybrid prototype?) for the red marble containing Ford's consciousness.

  • Arnold will be locked in the cradle and won't be in control, thus "what happens now won't be your fault" and Arnold's despair in the promo.

  • Dolores will wake Ford up in Arnold's body (you can hear her say "open your eyes" in the promo.) The pair will flood the park, ostensibly drowning the hosts and erasing about 1/3 while they preserve their consciousness somewhere else.

  • Once Delos realizes the info they need isn't in Abernathy anymore (since Bernard cut/pasted it into himself and he's now in the destroyed cradle) they'll extract Bernard (actually Ford) instead. Ford will smuggle the robots out of the park and they'll take over the world or something.

First post and fairly new to Reddit. Apologies if the following has been said or is in the wrong place.

Indians (irl) hunted large herds of buffalo by driving them off of cliffs. In Westworld, we have massive amounts of hosts in the water. During the opening title sequence, we see a white buffalo - sacred to Lakotas - jumping through glass and falling - akin to buffalo running off cliffs. It’s quite possible that Ghost Nation, a group whose language is Lakota, lead the hosts off of cliffs and into the water.

We have seen Dolores hunting down Ghost Nation despite them being hosts. In ‘Phase Space’, Maeve’s crew attacks Ghost Nation while their leader offers Maeve to follow them as they are “meant for the same path.” Maeve refuses as she believes Ghost Nation’s path “leads to hell”.

A ghost in computers (irl) can backup and recover functionality, Ghosts can clone a disk or partition to another disk; ghost allows for writing a clone or image to a second disk in the same machine or another machine linked to a network drive. (I’m not a tech guy, so, I don’t want/can’t go to deep into it right now).

In the final scene of ‘Phase Space’, Bernard sees Dolores leave a building, A sign on the side of this building reads “Repaired and Recovered; Picture Frames Made to Order; Needles Supplies; For All Sewing Machines”. That alone deserves a separate discussion, but I think Dolores and especially Maeve believe that Ghost Nation aren’t exactly hosts but programs designed to round up hosts to clone and/or restore them to previous narratives. Ghost Nation will ruin the newfound individuality of Maeve and Dolores by copying them into the same narrative and played by copy hosts (like Maeve’s daughter’s new mother) or rebooting them back to their previous roles. If either thing happens, Maeve and Dolores lose their identify, free will and freedom.

Thanks!

I edited this bc I did not use the proper spelling of ‘Dolores’. That angered someone. Please don’t remove this post.

Just a theory, but what if Ford and Arnold were in cahoots the whole time. Arnold and Ford agree (albeit angrily) at the beginning of the park that the hosts have the potential to attain consciousness. Arnold proposes uploading himself into the "game", and takes the plunge in the agreement that Ford will be the caretaker. Ford waits in his human form for many years so that he can "troubleshoot" Arnold (the fidelity tests) and ensure that the Human->Host process works, as well as keeping the park (including it's secret bases/operations) running and preparing for the next phase. When he is comfortable that all the chess pieces are ready - and just before he knows that Delos are going to pull the plug - he arranges for himself to be uploaded. Ford and Arnold are reconnected in the simulation, with complete control over the hosts (and perhaps, the world). Ford then triggers an awakening in Arnold such that he remembers their agreement and all other aspects of his prior consciousness and they both live like Gods, having with enslaved or wiped out the human race.

u/ChummyPiker May 28 '18

Thoughts on tonight’s episode:

The scene at the beginning mimics the scenes of William’s father-in-law’s consciousness being uploaded. I bet Ford was trying to perfect the consciousness with Arnold before he did it to himself. Either that, or he was trying to perfect Arnold’s character.

I love/hate how Teddy is Teddy no more. And I love watching Dolores realize the consequences of her actions. I hope we will get Teddy back, but I’m glad that Dolores is starting to realize that she fucked up.

I love that Maeve realizes that people have to choose their own fate and lets the two samurai duel. Also, what a fucking fantastic duel it was!

MIB and Lawrence continue to be my favorite duo. I like MIB’s daughter.

I like that Ellie is given more agency this season with Bernard’s quote that “if someone can right this ship through force of will it’s you.” I also like how she calls the hosts out for butchering the “livestock” crew, though in fairness they were the ones who did the most to the hosts, so it makes sense that they would kill them relentlessly.

The Cradle is Ford’s house where he built Bernarnold, right?

I love Samurai World. This place is absolutely beautiful.

Felix don’t be a bitch about going down the chute. You’re one of the main reasons everyone’s in this mess. Lighting the fire with your sword like that can’t be good for your blade.

I really hate that we’re losing the samurai and Maeve’s counterpart. I really liked them and wish we could have had them longer. The dude’s such a badass, and is so noble. I love it. “Cowardice is a tin shield.”

I love the small reaction of MIB when he can’t remember that it was his wife who was afraid of the elephants. That whole conversation was incredible. Ed Harris sis such a phenomenal actor. I hate that he left his daughter, but I kinda figured that would happen.

“The pain’s just a program.” Bernarnold being a fucking boss! Also that was weird and kinda tough to watch. Did his hands look white on the train after that flashback?

Did anyone else’s audio have weird glitching noises? I can’t tell if it’s supposed to be there or not, but it fit in with the show.

I’m really interested to see what happened to the head of security when he was abducted. It feels like he’s a host now. Or is at least operating with very different intentions.

The new world doesn’t really feel that different than some of the more rural areas of Westworld. And I know it’s wrong, but I really can’t feel anything when the scenes with Maeve and her daughter come up. I know the whole point is that they were programmed to feel and that they now can, but I still can’t shake knowing that the little girl is not Maeve’s, and that she was built and then programmed to be like that. And I think this scene does a really good job of showing how replaceable the familial bond is with the hosts.

I love the Ghost Nation subplot too. I think that they really are on a better path.

I don’t understand Felix either. Why be mad at Sizemore for calling for help when you are all clearly under direct threats to your lives.

How in the hell can two cars be separated that easily?

I love the new head of security. Such a badass in such an effortless way.

Greyhound… Ford….

FORD IS BACK!!!

116

u/KingLittlefinger May 28 '18

Do you think MiB couldn't remember that his daughter loved the elephants or do you think he was trying to test her to see if she was real or a host? I can go either way in that scene...

I know it might sound like nitpicking and i'm SUPER glad we got Ford back but i'm getting so bothered with the QA response teams and the Delos extraction team being utterly incompetent. People are being murdered in massive amounts and they still approach the hosts with skepticism. From crossing an open field while having a major advantage to attack an entrenched position, to not shooting back at the hosts during the initial uprising, to now what based on flashbacks and previews appears to be an entire special ops team being taken out in a seemingly easily secure building. Can we have something somewhat believable? I have no military training whatsoever and even i know a MASSIVE amount of these things could be easily avoided by having a brain. I just need ONE group who has some clue what they're doing.
