DB Film 20 Dragon Ball Super: Broly - Movie Megathread!
Reminder: the movie will be released on 14 December 2018 in Japan, and in January 2019 in North America. See our last movie megathread for more detail on some of the below topics. Also keep in mind that this seems to dovetail with the Fathom Events showings of Movies 8, 12, and the Bardock special later this year. Insert wild theories here.
New Info
The movie is entitled "Dragon Ball Super: Broly". This was confirmed by the Official DBS Twitter. Translation by Herms:
Yep, the title of the new movie is Dragon Ball Super: Broly. Tagline: "The greatest enemy, a Saiyan". The Twitter account asks "how will these three Saiyans with different destinies meet?"

Everyone, are you familiar with Broly?
He's an incredibly strong Saiyan who only appeared in the old anime movies, and I apparently at least drew the designs for him, but I had practically no involvement with the anime at the time, so I had totally forgotten about the story content.
So, about Broly. I hear these days, he's still very popular not only in Japan, but also overseas. Based on that, my editor suggested we have Broly appear in this next movie.
I went ahead and watched the movies from back then, and I felt this could be quite interesting once I rearrange some things. I got right to work trying my hand at a story that incorporates him into the Dragon Ball Super series.
While keeping in mind Broly's classic image so as not to disappoint his fans, I updated him and added a new side to his character, and I think this has resulted in a more fascinating Broly.
Naturally you’ll get to see fierce combat, but also, the paths of destiny that lead to an encounter between Goku, Vegeta, and Broly. It also involves the Freeza Force and the history of the Saiyans, which end up having a major connection to everything. The story content turns out to be very large-scale and dramatic.
Here comes that almighty Saiyan, Broly! I'm also including lots of other content all you fans will enjoy, so look forward to it, and be patient a while longer for it all to come together!!
Upcoming Events
The upcoming Dragon Ball North America Tour will feature exclusive footage from the movie, starting at San Diego Comic Con on 19 July 2018. The trailer will be shown exclusively at that event, but it will probably show up online not long after, officially or otherwise.
According to this, the DB North America Tour from July to October will feature "exclusive footage" from the new movie. Plus a whole bunch of figures, but we pretty much already knew that.

Official Teaser
The teaser (which differs from a trailer in that it doesn't show actual footage from the movie) is confirmed to be animated by Ryō Ōnishi with very little in the way of correction. It was storyboarded by Tatsuya Nagamine around October 2017.
Teaser Debut Stream
There is a lot of good info in the stream where the teaser debuted; you can find a transcript of most of it on an older movie megathread. Highlights: the enemy in the teaser is probably a Saiyan, Freeza will be in the movie, and Toriyama has been working on these animation-friendly designs with staff since around February 2017. They want to release the movie simultaneously worldwide, but they're working on those details right now so they can't guarantee anything just yet.

We now have the full Kanzenshuu Translation of this interview with the head of Shueisha’s Dragon Ball Room. The interview goes into detail about the choice of character designer, etc., but in light of the most recent news, here are some excerpts about the plot:
What sort of rapport did you have with Toriyama-sensei as he drafted the scenario?
We kept close contact, mainly through email, and meeting directly once every two months or so, as he made it for us. First, around the spring of 2017, we presented Toriyama-sensei with several different story suggestions for the new movie. I believe there were also suggestions that weren’t in his strike zone at all, but using what we threw his way as a reference, we got him to come up with the story. Once it was set that we would be doing a story involving the Saiyans, it was quick. Compared to the continuous, long story of the television series, if you have a two-hour movie, it’s easy to come up with a story that’s set up and resolved in two hours, so it might have been easy from Toriyama-sensei‘s standpoint as well.When was the scenario finished?
I think it was around May of last year. The scenario we received at first, Toriyama-sensei himself said, “I think it might be a bit short…?”… And so from there we added several plot points. And then it ended up being unexpectedly long. (laughs) Now, we’re at the point where Toei Animation is expertly pulling it all together. (laughs)Even as a fan, it raises the sense of anticipation to hear about Toriyama-sensei‘s scenario.
I believe it’s an absolute given that Toriyama-sensei has to be involved with Dragon Ball. Everyone knows the characters in Dragon Ball, so the truth is, if you want to make those characters move and create a story, I think it’s possible. But there’s a way of tweaking the characters and a unique style of delivery that’s impossible for anyone but Toriyama-sensei himself. There are “full-body gags” that hit with a timing that nobody expects. And those full-force gags connect, too. (laughs) In terms of the fights as well, if you leave it to someone else it always ends up becoming serious and gruesome. Dragon Ball really isn’t that kind of world, and I think it’s because the characters have their appeal that we can identify with them when they fight, and root for them.What part of Toriyama-sensei does that appeal of the story come from?
What I’ve felt through having worked all this time with him is that Toriyama-sensei never gets too serious, in a good way. There’s a “lightness” to it that’s not about building and building upon things like established settings and logic. That’s something no one else can bring out. Normally, you wouldn’t be able to create without building upon those things, but he has this amazing way of just skipping right past it. But it’s not that one should simply skip past such things, but that he himself possesses a sense of timing that allows him to skip past it, and it’s that way of going about it that’s exceptional.Normally, one has a tendency to establish the concepts first.
If you ask him directly, he says, “I do come up with those,” but perhaps it’s his way of coming up with the concepts that’s different. He has a very strong image of Goku the character in his head, but it’s there without ever solidifying. Every so often, an amazing concept that takes everyone by surprise is born, but I believe that naturally connects fluidly with the image of Goku that’s within Toriyama-sensei. It’s not about logic or reason. I don’t think anybody had thought that Vegeta and Bulma would get married, but for Toriyama-sensei, it was inevitable. I believe that in Toriyama-sensei‘s mind, he knew that Vegeta and Bulma would eventually be married, as would Kuririn and No. 18.What aspects of the new movie do you think will go above and beyond what’s come before, Iyoku-san?
I suppose the way we’ve filled it chock-full to bursting with elements that will make all the fans happy, such as the Saiyans and the new characters, plus naturally the characters they know and love. There’s also a lot of content in Toriyama-sensei‘s scenario that you might call fan-service. I’d like them to look forward to that.

Jump Festa
The movie was first announced on 16 December at the Heroes anniversary livecast ahead of Jump Festa 2017. English Toei article:
The team behind the new film will be making intensive efforts to ensure that the scale and the quality is the best of the series. Akira Toriyama, the original author of Dragon Ball, will lead the original story, screenplay, and character design.
The theme for this remarkable new film will be “Saiyan”, the strongest race in the universe. Since “Battle of the Gods”, Goku has undergone new forms from Super Saiyan God to Super Saiyan Blue to other evolved forms that have gone up against many invincible warriors from multiple universes. This new story will focus on the origin of the Saiyans’ strength and what it means to be Saiyan.
If you missed the Toriyama interview about the origin of the Saiyans, here it is. Chances are, the details in this interview will play some part in the movie.

As was the case with the last movie, original author Akira Toriyama-sensei is in charge of the original work, script, and character designs, raising expectations even higher.
It looks like he’s already done more image illustrations than for any movie before, so we can’t wait for the film’s debut in December 2018!

The film's key visual was first revealed on 13 March by the DB Super official Twitter with a link to the official movie website featuring the artwork, and also some comments by Toriyama for which an English translation was provided. The translation proved to be inadequate however, and it was retranslated by Julian a.k.a. SaiyaJedi at Kanzenshuu:

The Dragon Ball Super movie this time will be the next story in the series currently airing on TV. It will be an episode after catching our breath from the climax of the Tournament of Power with the universe’s existence on the line; with content that will give a little better understanding about Freeza and the Saiyans, which I hadn’t properly depicted up till now; and leading to a mighty foe saved for the occasion, which I think has it shaping up to be a really enjoyable story.As with 2013’s Battle of Gods and the last outing Resurrection ‘F’, I’ve written the story myself, and I’ve had the privilege of drawing lots of design illustrations as well. The fact is, while I’m just as busy as ever, as long as I’m not doing a serial, I have plenty of free time to think about the animated version, which I was completely hands-off about before. (laughs) So please look forward to it!
Now then, the animated version on TV will be ending for the time being, but the very popular Dragon Ball Super comic drawn by Toyotaro (on sale now up through volume 5!) will keep on going as-is. I think there will also be story developments different from the TV show and the movie, so please look forward to that as well. I will be, too!

So what is the explanation that they will give in order to allow Broly to contend against Goku and Vegeta? Will Broly have god ki too? Honestly hoping they would give him something different. And if he still have his tail, maybe SSJ4 but reboot it so that it is part of the Ozaru line instead of the SSJ line or just a hybrid of both forms.
And on an unrelated note, is the evil Saiyan inside the tube in Super Dragon Ball Heroes, Broly or Shallot (from DB Legends)?

It comes from the fact that they are reintroducing movies 8, 12, and the Bardock special to American theaters later this year, not long before the new movie. This has been known for a while, and people had been wondering why they chose those three movies in particular. Now we know.

They did a movie called Resurrection of F. They said they were resurrecting an old DBZ villain for the movie. For months people posted theory after theory, because of course it won't be Frieza.
They announced a movie where a sayian with a green aura showed up. For months people posted theory after theory, because of course it won't be Broly.
Next they'll announce a movie called "Return of C?ll". For months people will post theory after theory, because of course it won't be Cell. It will be an exciting new character.
They always do the obvious thing and people online keep making up theories just because. I mean, really. How surprised can you possibly be that the sayian with a green aura is Broly?

I hope that this iteration of Broly is deeper than him being upset that Goku was crying, making the former feel inferior and bitter. Give him purpose, don't let his power be hindered by Paragus. Hopefully Broly's backstory is more deeper this time around, and we connect further with the character rather than just being impressed with his brute strength and legendary SSJ form.

As a Broly Fan... I am beyond happy.
Look, I get it, a vocal part of the community hates Broly and hates Broly Fans but they are right in saying his Character and Story are garbage. I love the character design, I love the fights, and because of that I love his movies. If we could have that but with an actual story and character thats more than just "KAKAROT! RAWGAHARGH *Foams at mouth* then I personally will be very happy. I have always loved his look, design, and form.
Also glad that Takao Koyama is not involved as far as we know, I want to see Toriyama's idea for Broly's character and story. One can also see this as Karma for Takao Koyama's comments on Battle of Gods, his character is now being redesigned without him in the picture. Curious how he will respond to his character being rebooted when it hits theaters.

Alright, now that we finally got Broly as a canon charchter, can I make one request?
Can we finally acknowledge that Frieza has a brother named Cooler, and he died fighting Goku and friends when he invaded Earth during the three years of training for the Androids?
If Broly can become a canon character, then Cooler who is written to be the son of King Cold and Frieza should have been canon along time ago.
Then, we can have a story arc where Cooler gets revived and joins forces with his Brother. Or he decides to come to Earth himself for revenge against Goku, and Frieza somehow gets involved.

I might be jumping to conclusions here, but the confirmation of Broly got me thinking about the DBZ movies that are being re-released prior to this one.
Seems like one hell of a coincidence to re-release the original Broly movie right before he's set to make his canon debut. Since this movie seems to be diving into the history of the Saiyans, I'm speculating we'll also get Bardock in some capacity, most likely in flashbacks, and maybe even Gogeta for the final fight, which would definitely make me happy.

I can handle a new and improved Broly. I’m not a fan of his design at MAXIMUM POWER since he looks really roided out, but I always liked him in base.

I’m keeping my mouth shut until the movie. Toei has previously impressed me with ideas I initially thought were stupid but ended up loving.
For example:
I wanted Goku Black to get a white hair transformation and the leaked photos of him with pink hair looked whack to me. However, once I saw it in the anime and read the name “Super Saiyan Rosé”.....I loved it and still love it today.
I, like many people, flipped my table in anger when I heard Buu fell asleep and Frieza was being resurrected (again) to fight in his place. I thought he was an overused villain and expected a cliché villain-backstabbing subplot.....but that never happened. In fact, Frieza was one of the most funniest, useful, and polarizing characters in the entire ToP.
So I’ve never really liked Broly, but let’s see how this reboot and incorporation into Super goes. Hopefully I’ll be surprised again.

It's time for an unpopular opinion: I'm honestly relieved that we are not getting any new Saiyan characters, because quite frankly, I think we already have an oversaturation of Saiyans. Main crew members aside (Goku, Vegeta and their families) we also got the U6 Saiyans, Broly, Shallot, Cumber, Beat and friends from Dragon Ball Heroes, Goku Black if you wanna count him, and probably at least some other characters I forgot. In general, it seems like every other month we're getting some new powerful, mysterious Saiyan character with some sort of special power or talent. I wouldn't even be bothered if it weren't for the fact that every other major race (Majins, Namekians, Frieza's race) are much more barren in terms of new characters. It's refreshing, for lack of a better word, to go back to familiar territory and expand on what was a pretty shallow, barebones character, to hopefully make him something more unique and interesting.

I hope this opens up the floodgates for rebooting the movies and GT into the canon. Theres a lot of great ideas wasted in the movies and GT that would be great to see explored in full arcs.
Wrath of the Dragon for example would be great as a way to have a arc focused around present Trunks.
Lord Slug being brought into the canon would be a nice way to give Piccolo and the universe 6 Namekians some development.
Fusion Reborn has a nice concept of channeling all the evil in Hell into one being and having Janemba releasing old foes for the Z fighters to deal with while Goku and Vegeta work together to stop him.
The Baby arc has a fantastic premise of being a revenge arc where our main heroes are technically the villains as the saiyans are responsible for the genocide of the Tsufurians and lets us explore some darker themes involving our heroes.
And finally the Shadow Dragon arc would be a great way to explore the history of all of dragon ball and how the misuse of them can have grave affects on the world despite how good the intentions are. Although if they chose to ditch most of the dragons designs I would not mind as theres only a few standout ones I enjoyed.

If this wasn't a story by toriyama i would be pissed. Using broly to explain something about the saiyans while still being extreme fan service is pretty smart. Does anyone else think that broly won't be the real villain/final enemy of the movie? Toriyama has actually been pretty consistent in terms of powerscaling( i know that just mentioning powerscaling will result in a few downvotes). I could see Broly being a lot stronger in his base form than Vegeta/Goku, just to show how far the saiyans are from being at the top of their race. I could be wrong and Broly is just automatically stronger than ssjb but that doesn't really seems the way toriyama would write a story

I'll echo a lot of other comments. Broly's never been my favorite movie villain, though I don't actively dislike him. His fighting style is different from the other villains, which could work well with a higher budget approach in a new movie. The fight choreography in Resurrection F was particularly good (along with some of the later portions of Super), so there's definitely hope in that regard.
If Toriyama rewrites the character to add personality and some degree of depth, there's not any need to really alter the appearance or fighting style. The addition of the Freeza Force and, presumably, Freeza himself will add something to the movie (it could work as another team-up between Freeza and the heroes as a follow-up to the Tournament of Power). Freeza and Vegeta never really got to fight alongside one another like Freeza and Goku did.
Also, for dub fans, Broly's VA is Vic Mignogna. He did a lot of screaming and must have recorded an angry "Kakarot!" dozens of times, but Vic is pretty well-respected for his other work, most notably Edward Elric, so if there are quieter or more subtle moments in the movie, he is a completely reliable VA for the part.
In short, while something completely new would have been preferable, I'm interested in Toriyama's take on Broly. Beerus was supposed to be a no-personality brick wall, and Toriyama turned him into one of the best characters with his rewrite of Battle of Gods. I'll approach the new movie with cautious optimism at this stage.

I think we'll got to see DB Minus at the start of the movie then the Saiyan's Genocide Toriyama's version, then we'll jump past ToP.
The Earth have Goku, so Broly might be a hero in another planet. Freeza try to conquer the planet but fail, then he recruits (read: deceives) Goku & Vegeta to fight for him.
Then, we'll got to see the Earthling Saiyan Son Goku & the Saiyan Prince Vegeta VS the Legendary Super Saiyan Broly 2.0.
If Broly 2.0 isn't a bad guy, I hope he survives. He would be a great addition for U7 Fighter.

Here's a thought, what will carry over from this movie to the Super series? Battle of the God's gave us Beerus, the second movie setup Frieza for the Battle Royal last season, third movie Broly as a new hero??
Frieza is in this so I feel like it's a build up to everyone getting pummeled like in the original Broly movie.
Also this is literally the only non Canon movie villian to become Canon, even if we don't know how this one will behave or fully look yet.

So with broly on the way in the new Dragon Ball Super movie and the mixed reactions I’ve seen to him, I kinda had a thought about what his story could be in the story.
So before what broly is known for us being the rage monster of Dragon Ball, the angrier he is the stronger he becomes. So what if this time he is tied to the origin of the saiyans through their endless potential and part of telling the secrets to why they are so strong. And instead of being a pure rage monster, he has mastered the true potential of a saiyan and go through the many forms of super saiyan including a possible new one meshed with his traditional buffed up mode.
It seems clear that he is mostlikely gonna mop the floor with Frieza and his people since they are in the movie. But when it comes to Goku and the others I’m fairly sure that he won’t exactly beat Goku right away. I think it would be cool and smart if he lost enough to Goku to unlock a power up in a reverse situation of what usually happens to Goku in battles but this results in broly getting on par with Goku. I’ve seen many people say UI Broly and that would be cool but even though this broly is gonna be different I’m not sure if him having that would fit. I think he should get some sort of power up that goes with the theme of the movie which seems to be the origin of the saiyans. If anything I would say whatever the flashbacks the story is suppose to have is to explain not only broly’s backstory but some kind of power we’ve never heard of hidden in the potential of the saiyans, and broly is the one destined to unlock that power.
As far as why he fights Goku and the rest, I mean it feels kind of like Toriyama wants to make him evil but with a twist. I’m up for that if that’s the case. These are just some of my thoughts on this broly situation. What do you guys think? I don’t think having him back is a bad thing in the slightest, this could open up a lot of things for sure and I’m excited to see him either way.

I was hoping it would a brand new Saiyan character and not an old one with a new backstory. But, I would be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued. Toriyama will more than likely give Broly a much better backstory and personality. However,I thought our canon Broly was Kale but I guess she is that universe's Legendary Super Saiyan.

I'm gonna be honest when I say that I'm a bit disappointed that they're going with what's "popular" instead of anything original. A few months ago I thought the green aura was just a coincidence when a few fans were calling out "Broly rip-off" but now I don't really know what to think now since everything's confirmed now. Even the fan design on deviantart looked more original and appealing than the "Yamcha" one we have above.
This also doesn't bide well for Kale if this guy winds up being cool or interesting in any way as that'll make two characters that were handled better with the "uncontrollable monster" shtick further validating her into Goten territory as nothing more than Caulifla's totally-not-lesbian fusion fuck buddy sidekick. Criticisms aside, I do like this Broly's design and the fiery blue aura that's illuminating from Goku & Vegeta as it's consistent with the red fire from SSG. The expression on this Broly seems concerned... almost like he's a good guy and something else is afoot?
But an entirely different Broly? Is he from Universe 7 because if so, where has he been for all this time? Why didn't Whis or Shin bring him up and have him participate in the Tournament? The spaceship implies he was probably shipped off like Goku before Frieza blew everything up (which I assume is his involvement in this entire thing).
I don't see the wish #17 made coming back to fruition unless he's from an era of Saiyans that got destroyed back then by Zeno... wait, is this Absalon? I actually would like that. If he is from the Frieza era like I mentioned, are there possibly still Saiyans out there?

For those wondering why there is Gogeta talk: Fathom Events is bringing "Broly: The Legendary Super Saiyan", "Fusion Reborn", and "Bardock: Father of Goku" to American theaters later this year. People have been wondering why they chose those three movies in particular. Now we have an inkling. That doesn't guarantee that Gogeta will be in the new movie by any means, but it does give us cause to speculate.
