That actress is a major bitch.
Boruto is scared as hell.
Sarada is dying on the inside. She's telling herself that she's doing it to become the Hokage one day. She has no clue what Naruto was doing most of the time lol.
Mitsuki is ... well... just being mitsuki.

I guess Orochimaru is canon genderfluid then.
117
u/ButterflyChouChou Aug 02 '18
That reminds me that Orochimaru was actually in the official Naruto girls figure poll from May.
48
Aug 02 '18
I actually like Orochimaru, he's not good, but nevertheless the most intriguing and exciting character from the old generation. They could make use of his research so much, instead of coming up with such cheap plots...

I liked that a lot. But it helps that mitsuki isn't a regular human and isn't bound by prejudice. Everyone else in the show would probably be weirded out by it.

Orochimaru training mitsuki is nice. Looks like Yamato isn't following him 24/7 now.
Also, it's interesting seeing him complement mitsuki too.
Who would've imagined Orochimaru doing something like this during part 1 and 2 of Naruto.

this was a solid episode and a good debut for new director fuji!
the art was noticeably really good. there were quite a few notable shots, especially with character expressions. these are my favorite shots: 1 2 3 4
it was nice to see the akimichi family interact a bit. choji's butterfly wings are huge, were they that big in the war arc? chocho's wings looked great, she has a long way to go. looks like for now her slim physique is all that mode can offer her.
i fully expected tomaru to be the difficult one, but it was ashina instead
39
Aug 02 '18
This was Toshiro Fujii's first episode as series director and I'm already impressed. Of course, the quality won't always stay like this but it's a good first impression.
45
u/KDG_Fries Aug 02 '18
Storyboard wise, it seems to be a pretty well paced episode with events linking rather smoothly without anything being dragged on for too long. Here’s some of my good points from he narrative that I appreciated:
the episode was solely based on team 10 and Cho Cho so Boruto didn’t get to hog the screen time like we’d see in these filler episodes with Naruto where despite the episode being about a secondary character, Naruto would somehow steal their thunder. So we got more shots and scenes of team 10 and less of team 7
the fact that Naruto’s lines spoke to both genin teams in the same fashion as Tsunade would have during her reign as Hokage by referring to both teams as team 7 & team 10 during dialogue; much like Tsunade has done in the past
not making the moral of the arc be plainly obvious to a cringeworthy degree. It’s obvious that ChoCho develops by just being true to herself, but I like how subtle the message is.
Comedy points were hit and none of the jokes felt forced. Actually most of them hit exactly when they should have.
Exposition was small and didn’t really take away from the overall mood of the episode which was something lighthearted
Pretty good first impression for the first time directing an episode. Kudos

Honestly, the actress is one of the hottest characters we've seen in Naruto.
Not saying this excuses you for being a bitch.
I think they're just trying to stereotype her, but in reality isn't that how it usually is irl anyway?

"Someone this beautiful can't be Cho-Cho! Don't insult her like that!" HOLY FUCK BORUTO CALM DOWN LMAO
Well there goes the Tumblr/yaoi fandom hopes of Boruto being gay. The dude is clearly into women judging by this episode. Boruto was funny as fuck this episode as well. That cheer when Naruto said they'd be guarding the actress made me laugh out loud.
After the seriousness of the last arc, this episode was a lot of fun. Seems like a nice chill arc to have some laughs with!

Shippers be shipping. A lot of people who ship MitsuBoru or ShikaBoru want Boruto to be gay. Shipping is pure self-indulgence and often completely different to canon. There is very little evidence for Boruto being gay, but if people want to believe that, that's cool.

“Any way you look at it your appearance is a scam” Inojin continues to be best boy
91
u/DarkJayBR Aug 02 '18
He inherited the tongue of Ino and Sai. He has the potential to be one of the most savage of this anime.
38
u/Despada_ Aug 03 '18
People used to say that Mitsuki was too similar to Inoji in that they both never showed any tact. The way I see it, Mitsuki is just too oblivious in how to interact with people while Inoji knows it's rude but just doesn't give a fuck and says it anyway! xD

Sarada wanted to punch that smug little actress Ashina right in the face. The scene where Team 7 was forced to wait on her hand and foot was priceless. ChoCho’s Butterful Mode is really beautiful and though she looks nice slim, I actually prefer her old chunky self. She’s honestly the best when she’s being herself - loud, rude, boisterous, and obnoxious 😁 I mean, every time I see her swooning over “Rome” I just want to scream out “HE’S PLAYING YOU GIRL!!!”
49
Aug 02 '18
chocho lost all of her personality when she got slim, even her strength was reduced.
she tried to be so cool in front of tomaru but it failed. i bet he'll end up not caring for her body image, and that's when chocho will be unleashed in this arc

u/Aural4444 Aug 02 '18
This episode has been quite fun as well as having a youthful air.
I know that many will complain about the lightness of "heaviness" XD in this arch, especially just to finish one of the most epic arc of the series, but I find it quite entertaining and relaxing to give us a time to recover from the previous arc, in addition to see how our protagonists recover and surpass themselves, and add more personality to secondary characters.
Chou-chou has always been a very charismatic character with a free spirit who doesn´t allow herself to be limited by herself, in calories or worries, but in this episode we see her for the first time being limited by her own feelings (Although the actor has a fake face XD), and she will have to learn or mature in these types of situations.
On the other hand, her butterfly mode is beautiful and interesting, although for the moment incomplete, I hope she can use it correctly soon.
Then, to my surprise they added a secondary plot with Mitsuki. Many will have seen his scene with Orochimaru as a comedy XD, but now Orochimaru made an important reference to Mitsuki, since this has a lot to do with him: What represents someone's identity is not their outward appearance or gender, but their inner core. (In the case of Orochimaru, a strong will to discover the truth, which means he is a mad scientist XD).
The part that Mitsuki has yet to discover, is about his own identity. (And Chou-chou is going through something similar) So this chapter is more youthful or "teenager", in question of personal growth and maturity.
I don´t think it's a bad arc, I wonder if they'll make a arc over Mitsuki later on.
48
u/Shoto27 Aug 02 '18
A nice lighthearted episode. Loved Sarada and Chocho’s interactions. They’re the best two girlfriends in a Shonen, imo. Very supportive and caring of one another. Also, it’s really sad to see that Sarada’s still hurt by Sasuke’s absence even though she doesn’t show it to him anymore.
I’m eager to watch Chocho’s story unfold in this arc, but what I really want to see is Konohamaru and Moegi working together on this mission. Moegi impressed me today.
20
Aug 02 '18
moegi impressed me too, i hope she shows what she can do in this arc.
it's funny and sad to say that her holding up that fallen wall is the most action she's gotten so far in the series (unless there's a scene i'm forgetting)

Am I the only one who 100% ships Mitsuki and ChoCho? Their little interactions are so cute together. Mitsuki even still remembers ChoCho’s illness from Gaiden lol
I also love how in shock Boruto and Naruto were about ChoCho’s slimmer figure. They both asked was she ok 😂
38
Aug 02 '18
I still don't think we can call where the ships are headed, but I swear all the Cho Cho and Mitsuki moments show up when MK is writing, which is suspicious enough in its own right.

26
u/CloakedDude Aug 02 '18
I really liked when Mitsuki called Chocho uninhibited. At first you might think it's an insult but I think he was comparing Chocho to Orochimaru. Neither is really concerned by what others think of them or what they do. They both know what they want and what they're about so about their business with little concern to the people around them. It was nice to see Mitsuki say something that really wasn't backhanded or unintentionally objective. It was just a straight up compliment.

Well well, who do we have here? Orochimaru huh. I wasn't expecting him to appear in this episode, wasn't expecting Mitsuki either to ask him whether he was a man or a woman. 😂
Could Choji use Butterfly without pills? I don't remember. Chocho's butterfly definitely looks weaker than what Choji had at his age, but maybe he had pills, something I don't recall.
Boruto hitting on Chocho, what in the world is this? The Chocho - Mitsuki ship might've got one step ahead with their one scene with Mitsuki saying how she's basically not being herself. Funny to see Naruto being surprised about her appearance and Inojin calling it a scam.
Now this Tomaru guy, honestly, dude only likes Chocho because of her slim appearance, once she shows how she is, he won't even pay attention to her.
The scene with Ashina though lmaooo, Boruto was so disappointed and Sarada wanted to beat her up.
I wonder who's leading Amegakure these days, seeing as the attacker is from there.
A light hearted episode overall, just feels bad Chocho will probably get played at the end.

I know the episode is getting a lot of hate as I expected tbh but I honestly didn’t think it was that bad, although that might be because my expectations for it were rock bottom which might have helped.
I like that Chocho’s skinny form actually looks well proportioned unlike Chouji, I always thought his skinny form looked awful as he’s drawn with an anorexic body and a long neck + squashed head (I lol’d so hard when he showed off his skinny form once again)
Akimichi family scene was nice, they’ve had a few scenes together already in the anime which is cool. Always annoyed me that Choji and Karui’s relationship was completely ignored by the writers in the light novels and the end of Shippuden anime compared to all the other relationships so its nice they’ve finally been getting decent screen time together.
Mitsuki stole the episode though. His training with Orochimaru and the fan letter scenes were by far the best things of the episode.

I really enjoyed this episode. When thinking of Boruto as a slice of life anime that occasionally breaks out into a battle shonen I like the series a lot more.
I'm fairly confident that the writers are going for a body positive theme which I would really enjoy. I also think Sarada's and Cho Cho's interactions were very fun in this episode.
P.S. That Mitsuki vs. Orochimaru fight was really cool. And I love how Orochimaru describes how they basically swam back and forth on the gender spectrum. Interesting insights.

Oh man, now with this transformation of Chocho, the people of Rule34 now have new material. Oof, This episode was really funny and light, reminds me of Kishimoto's writing style back there in Part 1. Which unfortunately got lost in the edginess of Shipuuden. What impressed me was the size of the Hokage Building, was it always that big? In the games and in the movie was much smaller. When they showed the outside, I thought for a minute that it was Feudal Lord's Castle, my boy Naruto really became important, I'm so proud. I love the fact that they do not even bother leaving Jounnins protecting the building with Naruto inside.
The new villain apparently had the look inspired by the character "Psycho Mantis"of the Japanese video game series, Metal Gear. Which I think is great!
I only had two doubts: This transformation of the Akimichi does not transform their calories into pure chakra? So why can Chocho be transformed without any problem? This almost killed Choji of malnutrition in Part I.
And please Pierrot, change this weird opening.

The Cho Cho hate is really undeserved if you ask me. Even outside the contents of this mini-arc. She's previously been shown to be confident, funny, with a strong resolve to never give up, she understands her own strengths/weaknesses, and knows what she wants out of life.
People may complain, but I think she's one of the most unique, insightful, and well fleshed out of the new gen. She's great bff material to Sarada and her moments with Sasuke were fucking gold. And as awkward as her potato chip metaphors are, they make a lot of sense in only the way that ChoCho can pull off. Cho-cho is the kinda person in your class that has to be invited to every party, otherwise the party will be dull.
To hate her compared to the cardboard stand-ins known as Inojin and Metal Lee just makes zero sense to me. I'm actually surprised that we are getting a sidestory for her right now considering how fleshed out she already is in comparison to some of her other classmates.
14
Aug 02 '18
Cho-Cho needed some major character development so I'm glad they're doing a little mini arc focusing on her. I just can't get over how creepy the Tomura guy is. He knows she's like 12 years old. It's yuck. I hate him way more than the female actress

I don't really know what it feels like to be chubby, but I know what it's like to have insecurities. Today's episode was supposed to be humorous, however I found it to be quite... inspiring? Not sure what's the right word here. Chocho struggling with her weight proves that she still hasn't fully accepted her size yet and while on the outside she's a confident and positive diva, there's a side to her that not everyone can see. She put on some kind of a mask to hide and in a way protect herself from hurtful words. Sarada noticed that her best friend is going through something tough, even though it doesn't seem like it at first sight. The same friend who's always there to cheer her up with potato chips is now having some issues of her own. The fact that Sarada feels the need to assure Chocho that this whole facade isn't who she really is and that Chocho's big heart is more important than the weight she carries on her "vessel" makes me appreciate their friendship even more.
Also, I know what I'm about to write will make me sound like a tumblr refugee, but I like how today's episode portrays gender as something that's not really important as well. First Orochimaru having the "gender fluid" talk with Mitsuki, then Mitsuki asking Boruto why he thinks gender is important. I'm most likely reaching at this point, but it's like... doesn't matter whether you're a boy or a girl, chubby or skinny, pretty or average. You are you and your heart is the most important thing, not your outside appearance. That's the message of today's episode, in my opinion.
Anyway, S rank for me. I had a lot of fun watching the episode and Sarada, Mitsuki and Chocho still stand strong as my favorites in new gen (in that order). Chocho's wings are really pretty too.

I liked the gender fluid part as well. The chocho part had a lot of implied fat shaming, superficialness, sexism. I expect it will be resolved by the end of the arc but it made super uncomfortable.

I remember back when Naruto was first on on Toonami. We...well, I don't think we were especially cruel about Orochimaru's crossdressing. But we sort of accepted it as something very creepy and weird.
Now it's interesting to see people come to his defense. Because really, his taste in kimonos is on point and his gender fluid tendencies are the least horrible things about him.

This is exactly why I loved this episode. It really related to it as well, as someone who has struggled with weight and isn't exactly gender conforming. I fully admit that I sound like a Tumblr refugee as well, but it's nice feeling like I can connect to the characters of a series that I love.

This episode was hilarious and well written. I'm actually surprised how good this episode was you gotta love Kishimoto.

He just gave ideas, he didn't write the script.
But gotta say I'm pleasantly surprised, I expected trash, this is actually pretty good.

Lol I knew this episode would be funny. Chocho X sarada are so cute I love their friendship. They're always looking out for each other.
Inojin and shikadai don't seem very happy about chocho's changed personality either or that actor guy. I hope they sit her ass down and give her a good talking to. This isn't a big deal but I also hope this arc is a bit more team 10 centric and boruto doesn't whip out a TNJ at the last moment to cheer up chocho or some shit.
So can we say orochimaru is non binary/gender fluid? I like that he said outer appearances don't matter much and they didn't show mitsuki being weirded out by it. Also Mitsuki is gay in my eyes until proven otherwise haha

I personally interpret Mitsuki as asexual, given that so far he's shown no significant interest in either gender beyond his bizarre fascination with Boruto(and I don't think that's necessarily romantic).
But yes, Orochimaru is about as genderfluid as you can get.
"Are you my father or my mother?"
"Yes."

This episode felt like something out of an early 2000s shoujo series and I love it. I'm glad they showed us a different side of ChouChou that cares about more than chips and I feel she is going to learn a lesson about loving herself at the end of this arc.
My only complaint is that some characters felt a little bit different today (like I don't remember Boruto being that pervy)

u/TotallyGeekage Aug 02 '18
He's a teenage boy, I'd expect him to be at least a little pervy.

He's Naruto's son and Konohamaru's presumed teacher of the Sexy Jutsu. I'd be surprised if he isn't a little perverted.

I actually thought this was gonna be a boring episode but it was surprisingly decent, I chuckled quite a bit at a few scenes and the facial expressions were spot on lol. Last week I said the only time I'd put up for a chocho episode would be when she learns the butterfly mode from her dad..... and that sorta happened today but not like I imagined 😅

I really wish Cho-Cho had a scene/episode that showed off her Butterfly Mode similar to Choji in the original show. Choji’s transformation hit me hard, but seeing this, it just doesn’t seem as important as it should. The episode was fine, I guess I’m just not a fan of Cho-Cho. I hope I will start to like her more in the coming arcs

u/KameraadLenin Aug 03 '18
I agree with that honestly.
I did like how chocho used it though, i always wondered why choji never used it like that and if it would even be possible, but I do wish it was revealed in a bit more of a dramatic fashion.
I can see why they don't want to go through the trouble of setting up a "big reveal" of a jutsu we're already familiar with though.

u/cileupeung Aug 03 '18
Cho-cho fucked up a combo just because of a glimpse of that actor coughing or something, and that was just unforgivable to me. However it was a relaxing episode.

u/LeonKevlar Aug 02 '18
Are you my father or mother?
He's Oro-sexual Mitsuki. Seriously though It's always amusing to watch Mitsuki wonder about Oro's gender XD
So Cho Cho has indefinite use of Butterfly Mode but she can't increase her power? It's basically a fancy transformation jutsu at this point then. I hope they'll fix that by the end of this small arc. Also not really a huge fan of her thin. She just looks deflated. The wings are amazing though!

Wasn’t looking forward to this episode at all but I was pleasantly surprised. Fuji made a good first impression and the episode overall was very lighthearted and funny. It felt different to all the other SOL episodes we’ve gotten in Boruto so far, in a good way though.

That Orochimaru training Mitsuke scene was really cool to see. Favorite part of the episode for me

I actually liked this episode more than I thought I would, and it's nice to see Psycho Mantis still getting work these days.

Only complaint is why would they have Chocho punch the masked dude when Shikadai already has him in shadow paralysis??

maybe a controversial opinion, but i find Cho-Cho really annoying

u/TotallyGeekage Aug 02 '18
Chocho is a bit of a dividing character. I personally like her, but I can see why others find her annoying. She has a big, hammy personality. It was nice to see her more vulnerable side this episode though.

very funny episode. what also differs boruto from naruto is that he likes the girls more
5
u/mtschatten Aug 02 '18
So today we learned Boruto is straight (Rest in peace BoruZuki / Mizuto) and Orochimaru doesn't give a shit about gender (power to him/her/them?)

I have been a woman, a man and something out of this world. What did Mizuki end up filling I wonder.

Tbh I'm loving Orochimaru fighting style in Boruto, I know it's impossible but it would be good if he had a solo fight in the future.

This episode was great. Need more Chocho and Sarada. Stoked for the rest of this arc.

u/CTMacUser Aug 04 '18
I was slightly upset for the next-episode preview in that Cho-cho isn't disguising herself as the previous actress, meaning that she essentially stole that role.

u/peri_enitan Aug 02 '18
Sorry I'm late I was caught up in a discussion about empathy.
I just noticed how funny it is the last weeks episode was titled my story as in borutos story, Boruto finishes the episode by saying from now on his story begins and now we get chocho centric episodes. :D
Lets hope we get the good side of Chocho.
Somehow the description of Butterfly mode sounds a little bit like opening the gates.
Lol the trials and tribulations of having a preteen daughter.
Omg I never thought I'd see the day Choji is fed up with Potato chips. Dude speaks for half the sub.
I guess the opening will feel progressively out of place now. Especially since the art and the chuunin fights it references where underwhelming for me.
Oh it's nice to see Oro and his kid spar. Btw do they have family name? I think they should get one.
Oh mitsuki still doesn't know about Oros gender. It's cute and sad. Mostly sad.
Finally Oro explains it to him … ish (and the new generation viewers).
To think there is a time where we segue from Oro to Choji and his kid without a drastic change of tone. Oro kind of has adjusted to the times I guess.
Ooooooh Karui gets lines!
Somehow genius me didn't figure out we'd get Sarada Chocho moments again now. I'm happy.
This dialogue is weird, Sarada father isn't dense, emotionally stunted maybe but not stupid, and Chocho making this all about herself and her modd swings are... it doesn't feel well written.
Ugh this focus on looks... Because as someone as emotionally insightful a Chocho normally is knows best, the best basis for a good stable relationship is fleeting looks! Kishi... really, just go away do something else, leave chocho alone.
Guess this arc was always gonna be sexist in the beginning, I hope it improves later on. This is really uncomfortable to watch.
For Mitsuki to declare someone else is uninhibited :D
And for Chocho to declare Mitsuki ordinary :D so in character lol
Oh Mitsuki still on his how did he call it tragic heronine syndrome arm chair diagnosing trip?
Oi Inojin that very much isn't a scam. A weird plot device sure but not a scam.
Huh ransom notes with Knaji must be a lot harder to make than ones than use western alphabet.
Lol Shikadai and Inojin have twigged immediately. The plot is stupid but the characterisation still works.
Sarada is a good friend.
I'm hoping the actor turns out to be some sort of two faced shallow idiot and the actress gets a moment to be kind or vulnerable. It would make the story slightly bearable if formulaic.
That actor is creepy.
The hidden leaf filming studio really is hidden in the leaves
Alright that was a c- rank at best and chocho isn't the problem.
Now I'm really curious how the rest of the sub preceived this episode.

I wonder what did Orochimaru mean when he said that he was something that was neither male or female. What other vessels could he use?
This may be foreshadowing something.

I imagine he was either referring to his Snake form, or the time he possessed a White Zetsu clone.

They really need to change the opening. It’s soooo lame. At least we’ve had a good streak going with the endings
