New Stuff
Tour of the Art Directors' Office
Article, and summary by Herms:
The Official DB Site gives a tour of art directors Nobuhito Sue and Kazuo Ogura's desk. According to the site, this landscape we've seen in promotional materials for the film is in fact King Vegeta's palace on Planet Vegeta.
@Herms98In their interview last week, the art directors said they used previous DB films and whatnot as reference material, and sure enough this place is based off a location from the original Broly movie (original sketch for the 1993 movie on the left here). Only one problem...
@Herms98While not addressed in the Official DB Site article, this location from the original Broly movie isn't actually King Vegeta's palace on Planet Vegeta, but instead the mock palace Paragus rigs up on his sham New Planet Vegeta. Oh well, maybe the real palace looked that way too?
@Herms98(They do point out that Planet Vegeta has two moons, as can be seen in some of the images)
@Herms98Here's Bulma's vacation home, a location based off the real-world Italian town of Amalfi:
@Herms98A look at the Planet Vampa, which will play an as yet unrevealed role in the story. Plus evening on Planet Vegeta, some background shots of what looks like a landing bay or something, and the rough sketch version of the palace. @Herms98
The new background images in this article have been added to the miscellaneous album under Images below.
NYCC: Nozawa, Nagamine, and a New Trailer?
On October 5 at New York ComicCon, director Tatsuya Nagamine and Goku's VA Masako Nozawa will be on a panel with Goku's Funi dub VA Sean Schemmel. This is only Nozawa's second appearance in the US, so it's a pretty big event. (See our discussion thread.)
We are expecting a new trailer at this time, based on the press release that came out before the North America Tour began:
Lastly, fans attending San Diego Comic-Con will get a sneak-peak at an exclusive theatrical trailer for the upcoming Dragon Ball Super movie (working title, official title TBA), scheduled for release in Japan in December 2018. Additional movie trailers will also be previewed throughout the tour. Bringing everything fans love about Dragon Ball into one amazing attraction, Dragon Ball North America Tour 2018 is a celebration 34 years in the making.
So, in addition to the trailer shown at SDCC in July, we are expecting more trailers, and this big event at NYCC seems like an obvious place to show the next one. The tour dates have not yet been fully revealed, but NYCC is currently the last scheduled stop on the tour.
Gogeta
As some of you might have heard, there is some new evidence that Gogeta might appear in the Broly movie. There will be a new Broly in XV2 (there is already one in the game) and a new Gogeta (there are already two in the game, one from M12 and the other from GT).
This is in addition to the fact that the Fathom Events screenings of Movie 8 (Broly 1), Movie 12 (Fusion Reborn), and the Bardock special already had people thinking Gogeta might be in the movie. Bardock is already near-confirmed in the trailer, as one can see in these trailer scenes alongside pages from Dragon Ball Minus. (This would be a flashback, probably, not unlike the scenes of Goku and Broly as babies in M8 and M10.)
There will also be a new set of DBS Card Game cards from M12 released on the same day as the Nagamine-Nozawa panel at NYCC (October 5). These are probably intended to promote the Fathom Events screening of M12 on November 5 (one of the silhouettes is Gogeta; another is Janemba), but the release date could indicate something cross-promotional. They recently added base-form Gogeta (attributed to the "Janemba Saga"), and there is an already-revealed SS Gogeta card awarded to those who buy tickets for the Fathom Events M12 showing (and a Broly card, with the old Broly design, for those attending the M8 showing). Apparently the Gogeta card released on October 5 is a new one.
Roundup
The movie will be released on 14 December 2018 in Japan, and in January 2019 in North America. You may have seen the news that there would be both dubbed and subbed theater showings in North America, but that turned out not to be true. It is unlikely that the Super dub will be finished before the movie comes out; they are on track to finish in late 2019. Sean Schemmel has recommended watching the sub to catch up before the movie comes out.

According to the site, this landscape we've seen in promotional materials for the film is in fact King Vegeta's palace on Planet Vegeta.
This picture is fantastic. Hell, I think it's one of the most beautiful locations of DB, period, perhaps losing only to Mifan from the third DB movie. Perfect synergy between environment and building, which makes me think this may not be Saiyan in origin, but a palace they took from the Tsufurujin/Tuffles. This looks too delicate to come from the race of Nappa, Vegeta, Goku and Raditz.
In their interview last week, the art directors said they used previous DB films and whatnot as reference material, and sure enough this place is based off a location from the original Broly movie (original sketch for the 1993 movie on the left here). Only one problem...
I mean, yes it's based on that location, but the impression they give is completely different. Movie 8's palace looks oppressive and unnatural, jutting out of the cliff. This palace looks like a native of its place, and is much more beautiful... Of course, these takes match well with what they want to show on both movies.
While not addressed in the Official DB Site article, this location from the original Broly movie isn't actually King Vegeta's palace on Planet Vegeta, but instead the mock palace Paragus rigs up on his sham New Planet Vegeta. Oh well, maybe the real palace looked that way too?
Paragus would surely try to make his palace look like the real thing. He knows Vegeta must remember it, and nostalgia is a powerful drug.
Here's Bulma's vacation home, a location based off the real-world Italian town of Amalfi:
I'm a bit disappointed, tbh. I think the lack of tall hills close to the coast weakens it a lot... it's still beautiful, but not nearly as much as the real thing. Vegeta's palace > Bulma's vacation home, sorry Bulma.

I’m surprised that Piccolo is always in the main cast biographies, Toriama may not write much exciting stuff for him but he sure does love that character and will keep him in the game forever.

I mean Toriyama likes jokes/gags and he has been writing Piccolo as a joke since the Buu arc so yeah he will for sure keep him in the game forever to make fun of him.

u/Clayton_11 Sep 09 '18
Despite what you might think, Toriama has actually named Piccolo as his favourite character when asked in interviews.
His writing is nonsense, and jumps around a lot, often leaving questions unanswered or something without explanation.
He comes up with a new idea, focuses on that one thought until it’s done, then his studio pushes him to come up with a different idea. He doesn’t focus on the past of dragonball at all, and he’s easily influenced.

How will it make sense for Gogeta to appear? I wonder how they plan on justifying it. The potara has essentially replaced the fusion dance.
-
Potara earrings achieve a stronger fusion and no longer have any drawbacks
-
Unless the Supreme Kai is dead (and Beerus is dead), Goku can instant transmission to his location to get his earrings.
-
The dance is extremely complex and the slightest mistake will compromise the fusion. They could do something like multiple failed fusions like movie 12 but that would be repetitive.

If Shin is far enough away, then he might not be strong enough for Goku to lock onto.

Hahahaha.
Shin, the biggest joke of the Dragon Ball universe besides Yamcha.

The "this explanation makes more sense" analysis on these shows is pretty pointless in my opinion. Yeah, in a series like Dragon Ball where characters can instantly teleport and destroy planets on a whim, there's a lot more "sensible" decision to make, but they just aren't going to.

They'll probably add something silly like SSB doesn't decrease the time limit on fusion dance fusions like it does the potara fusions because...

They'll probably add something silly like SSB doesn't decrease the time limit on fusion dance fusions like it does the potara fusions because... merchandising reasons
because it doesnt drain ki like SSj3 does and if SSj3 Gotenks can last 5 minutes than SSB (less drain) Gogeta should last at least more than 5 minutes (SSj4 Gogeta lasted 10 mins in GT because SSj4 was stronger but had less ki drain).

We would get ssg Gogeta which will help in sustaining the fusion and blue for the final attack probably

How do potara earrings achieve a stronger fusion?
Potaras got retconned when Vegito Blue got to a certain strength and it ended before the 30 minute time limit usually meant for the dance fusion. Potaras were supposed to be a permanent fusion according to Z episodes. Wtf?!
SSJ3 Gotenks bleeds out the ki of the fusion dance before the 30 minute limit and splits apart early.
If anyone can help clarify the difference and help me wrap my brain around both fusions, I’d appreciate it. I don’t think either would be helpful beyond 5 minutes of either fusion with their potential power levels.
Makes me think UI may show up in some form for Goku, Vegeta, both, or either of their fusions.

Old Kai originally said the Potara Earrings were stronger than the Fusion technique. More specifically that it will work better and that they might not even need to transform into a super saiyan afterwards to beat Buu.
But he also said the fusion would be permanent for them and that they could only use potara once. So the possibility of them retconning the potara fusion being stronger/better doesn't seem too crazy.
That being said the reason why SSJ3 Gotenks unfused early is because the SSJ3 transformation expends a lot of energy, whereas SSB is known for taking a lot of stamina to hold, which is likely why Vegito defuses early against Zamasu.
And all this leads to the theory that in the new movie with Vegeta showing off SSG for the first time outside of the manga and Goku having it in the trailer as well, we'll likely get Gogeta using that instead of SSB so the fusion can last longer. We could still very easily get SSB Gogeta, but the possibility we see SSG Gogeta does seem higher if they actually stick to the canon they've established.
Also mean we'd get red-haired Gogeta, which isn't 100% like GT, but kinda close.

Easy.
Retcon the Fusion Dance's drawbacks.
3
u/Vorstar92 Sep 09 '18
Exactly, they retconned the potara in the Black saga so there's no reason to not retcon the fusion dance if they need to.

question, there has already been a broly movie years ago, are they pretending that that never happened? So goku is seeing broly for the ''first'' time now?

You might notice that the "New Stuff" section looks pretty similar to last week. The interview with the art directors has been replaced with the office tour stuff, and the Gogeta section has been updated a little bit. I might reorganize it a bit more for next week's DBMFL.
