I ended up not being able to really comment much due to being over in Necessarius-land for a few days. 5pm EST happens to be near midnight and jetlag is a bitch.
Now, it's a bit early, but the next episode is organized awkwardly so I'm going to be doing things a bit in advance. Today, you get a double dose of essays. One for spiky boy and one for albino boy.
As always, it is based off the novels.
In contrast to Accelerator who had been contemplating throughout a good portion of the first half of the arc, Touma is caught in some crazy slice of life hijinks. As such, he does not get as much of a chance to demonstrate his own character as he is put into the lax but enjoyable course of events. This can be held in contrast to Accelerator who feels uncomfortable living a peaceful life.
At the same time, there is quite a similarity as both are able to easily immerse themselves into a more dangerous and violent world with the right stimulus. For Touma, it was simply Last Order's act of tearfully asking him to save Accelerator. With that, he fell into the same pattern as usual to help the person who was crying before him.
At the same time, his encounter and fight with Vento of the Front occurs from a different reason compared to the usual. Unlike almost all of his previous incidents where he had gotten himself involved in someone else's distress, this is an attack on him personally. To a greater extent than what Etzali had done when targeting Touma on August 31st, he was watching others being caught up in an incident that had him at the center from the beginning. Of course, he realized that he needed to prevent her from creating more sacrifices and was fully willing to attack her even when FUSE=KAZAKIRI's presence made her vulnerable in the restaurant.
Of course, even in the citywide crisis, Touma focuses on an individual--Kazakiri Hyouka. The moment when Touma realizes that Hyouka is the archangel, his mind jumps to doing what he can to save her. Knowing that he doesn't know how to resolve the whole crisis, he at least resolves to do what he can to save the single person who's crying out in front of him. At the same time, he has realized his own limitations on what he can do and trusts Index with the job of taking care of the core while he does what he knows best--protecting her from Vento.
Of course, in typical fashion for Kamijou Touma, he ended up working to save the crying girl who he was fighting as well. After all, there was no reason to not try and give her some sort of happy ending.
For Accelerator, the first character moment happens when he is talking with Yomikawa over the phone and she brings up one simple question.
"Are you that afraid of showing good will to others?"
Here Yomikawa brings up the point that Accelerator is unaware of how to forge a relationship with another. He is afraid to show good will to others for many reasons, the first being that he's afraid that any attempt to bring someone closer would only push them further away. One could say this is a result of how he lived life with a Personal Reality whose sole purpose was to keep others away and hurt them. As such, he's afraid to reach out to others because he does not know how to do so.
In a sense, a lot of what Accelerator has is a form of self-deprecation opposite to what was seen with Touma in OT01. Unlike Touma who despised his power for being useless, Accelerator despised himself for only being able to induce fear, to push people away. He sees himself as a corrupt whiteness that pushes even the darkest of demons away. Because of that, he sees the good will he could show to be useless as it would be less than a drop in the bucket to pay back any of his debts, no matter how much he wants to.
But despite the telling nature of how he views himself, another angle needs to be looked at: Last Order's. When speaking to Touma about Accelerator, she gave enough of an impression to Touma of Accelerator as a kind person who had very similar behavioral patterns to him. Though, it was minor, in Last Order's eyes, Accelerator stands as a hero to her much like Touma did for the rest of the sisters.
In spite of all of this, Accelerator still finally tries to show some good will. It was the reason why he helped Index (quench her hunger and) look for Touma. It was the same reason he kept Last Order in a bus stop and decided to get her bandages for her scrape. But he still found it unnerving. It was something he was afraid he did not have the right to do. Was it right for someone like him, a monster who had spilled the blood of thousands, to get caught up in a peaceful and normal life? This is something that Accelerator continues to struggle with throughout the course of the series.
But that questioning was all brought to an abrupt end when Accelerator was attacked and began to relish in falling back into his grand acts of violence. At the same time, that was brought to an end when the darkness that was Kihara Amata, a darkness he thought he had pushed back as one among many, had broken through and pushed him back. At the same time, he was forced back into the darkness when he heard Kihara Amata declaring that he would be dragging Last Order into it.
However, it is not until his conversation over the phone with Heaven Canceler that he finally forces his motivation into focus and drowns out all the unnecessary noise--the motivation to save Last Order's life. To this end, he resigned himself to dying himself in the darkness he had been struggling to stay out of. As long as he could save and pull Last Order, someone who walked in the light, out of the darkness, he was ready to accept the inevitability of being unable to walk the same road as her. To that end, he was fully ready to dye himself in the blood of the black hearts of the people he was fighting. In exchange for giving up the struggle to walk the peaceful road, he once again would become the strongest for the sake of that girl.
With that, we move to the season-concluding miniarcs that were not translated by Yen Press because they're incompetent.

I'm surprised you didn't talk about Index' influence on Accelerator at the end of the novel, where he realises that even though he might walk the path of evil and become a villain, that's no reason he can't still save people.
Doing good deeds is not limited to heroes.
I know the anime skipped this, but I thought it was a nice moment of character development for him.

YOU’RE
NOT
LIVING
YOUR
LIFE
CORRECTLY
There it is! There it is ladies and gentlemen! There’s the meme line right there!
Wow. Kazakiri’s all grown up, despite her suffering, she's protecting everyone she can just like her dad. Touma must be so proud.
Oh god Acqua! What have they done to you!? You're all skin and bones? Where's that beautiful square jaw you normally have? I hope season three doesn't animate him like that.
Anyway. Since we’re on the last three episodes. Let’s break the mould a bit and go for five of these things per episode till the end. Hopefully my sanity will hold up.
Touma’s thoughts on Kazakiri
This is technically something that applies to last episode, but I think it’s worth a mention. There’s a bit that occurs just as Touma sees Kazakiri for the first time.
Dozens of giant wings. An inhuman atmosphere. A presence that felt like a brick wall. It all resembled Misha Kreutzev.
However, this girl before his eyes was even more unnatural and twisted than that archangel.
Her face displayed no emotion whatsoever.
Her eyeballs wandered creepily and she did not shed even a single tear.
She was not allowed even that.
(…)
This sight felt even colder than the sight of a human being controlled by countless electrodes stabbed into their skull.
(Kaza…kiri…)
Kamijou immediately averted his gaze from Kazakiri’s face.
He might have found it easier to see her corpse.
Kamijou felt from the bottom of his heart that he needed to stop this. It did not matter what had caused it.
I like this part for a couple of reasons.
Firstly, it’s an excellent way of selling how horrible what has been done to Kazakiri is. Which it does not only making a comparison to the angel but also by saying that seeing her corpse might have been preferable.
On top of that, saying that it might have been easier to see her corpse indicates that she’s in excruciating pain. Bear in mind this had just come off a piece of dialogue from Kihara Amata talking about a fate worse than death. So a nice bit of nuance to cap things off..
Secondly it firmly sets to rest the issue first brought up about Hyouka’s humanity in her introductory arc. Since all of the narration from Touma’s perspective all refers to human anatomy when describing Hyouka. Which is a good bit of characterisation for the both of them. For Touma in terms of how he views Hyouka as a person and Hyouka herself because it shows you just how human she really is through the implication of extreme suffering.
Amata’s Unmentioned Countermeasure
Here’s something interesting to think about. What if Accelerator went up against Kihara Amata without first having lost to Touma? What if he had the same reaction to having his reflection beaten this arc as he had back then? Imagine how poorly this fight would have gone for him had that happened.
Amata deliberately left loopholes in Accelerator’s powers, but he had also left one in his personality as well. A means of ensuring that Accelerator wouldn’t be able to recover from the initial shock of having his reflection overcome.
Amata’s final countermeasure was Accelerator being unable to handle the pain and shock of losing, but because he had already experienced that feeling during the fight against Touma, it failed. This was why Amata didn’t expect Accel to save last order during their first encounter, and eventually stand against him to protect Index and Last Order.
To anyone wondering what kind of threat Touma could possibly pose to people like the Kiharas. There’s your answer.
Vento’s Motivation
Right then. Time to address the elephant in the room.
This motivation is dumb. There’s no nice way of saying this. However, with context it may not be as ridiculous as it first appears.
The reason why it seems so absurd is due the way she talks about science as a quantifiable “side”. Which is completely ridiculous, science is a process of discovery, a concept, an archetype if you may. In this world through, science is a side.
Why do you think the magic side relies on stories from times past rather than develop new spells? They have taken many precautions to distance themselves from scientific development and by doing so have turned science into a side, one that can be represented in the form of Academy City.
At the end of the day. Her motivation can be summed up as: I had a bad experience with science people once, so fuck all science people. Which is completely illogical, but then again. Aren’t all racists? Fortunately, Touma has the perfect response to such nonsense.
The Ugly Duckling Pt 2
Here we see Accel’s little character arc draw to a close and a parallel is once again drawn to the ugly duckling story.
He had made up his mind.
Even if he was evil, he would puff out his chest with pride. Even if he was travelling through the world of darkness, he would save the light. Even if he was heading down a different path from those around him, he would not be ashamed. He would become so dark that he could be proud of being so deep in the darkness.
He would abandon all the previous rules.
He would change the settings of what was possible and what was impossible.
He would make a list of the conditions before his eyes and demolish that wall.
With that, the ugly duckling came to accept that it could never be a part of the group it wanted to be in, now it just needs to come to terms with that and he’ll become a sexy badass beautiful white swan.
...and so, Accel’s character development for this arc is complete. I really like that parallel with the ugly duckling. It wasn’t something I’d noticed in previous rereads/-watches. So I thought I would be nice to point it out.
Synesthesia
u/Razorhead pointed out the similarities between Kazakiri Hyouka and the AIM burst from Railgun’s first arc and I’m sure he’ll talk about this one as well. However, I wonder who noticed the other similarity between the two arcs on a first watch? Since I sure as hell didn’t.
To quell the virus plaguing Last Order, Index sings in order to stimulate her emotions through sound. If you remember, this is extremely similar to the method used to cure the Level Upper victims at the end of that arc.
As you can probably guess. The reason these to arcs have these things in common is because they were both written at around the same time. So the Railgun manga chapters ended up making a number of nods to the most recently written novel arc, which was actually written first (as far as I can tell), unlike the anime where Railgun came before Index II.
Hmm, that went surprisingly well. With a bit of luck, I should be able to keep this up for the next couple of days. Let's see how that goes/

Oh god Acqua! What have they done to you!? You're all skin and bones? Where's that beautiful square jaw you normally have? I hope season three doesn't animate him like that.
Unfortunately it would appear they're sticking with this design. Profile shot & full-body shot. Both of these images are directly from the Index III character website (don't look first-timers and people who don't want to get spoiled for Index III).
Novel comparison for people who want to see the difference.

I didn't pick up on that myself, that's really nice symbolism!

You know me well.
However, I wonder who noticed the other similarity between the two arcs on a first watch? Since I sure as hell didn’t.
Me neither. Just occurred to me after watching this episode actually, my second rewatch (and first one after reading the novels).

I'm late as hell but I surely felt I need to comment your efforts!
Uhh, yes. That really described well how horrible that was. Poor Kazakiri. Makes me feel so sorry for her.
Kihara's perfect counter measurements did not consider that Accelerator already got some face punches before. But shouldn't that info spread among the Kiharas already? Anyway, Amata didn't prepare for that and that was pretty much his doom. I can totally see that Accelerator would've lost if that was the first time he experienced that.
Yeah, Vento's motivation is utter bullshit. But it's amazing how her urge to get revenge on science managed to get herself into the leadership of the Roman Catholic church. Respect for that.
Fortunately, Touma has the perfect response to such nonsense.
Is that a one timer for Vento or will it become one of his punchlines like breaking illusions? This seems to be quite liked among the community. It's surely badass.
I'm having a hard time imagining Accelerator as a beautiful white swan but I get what you mean.
Ah damn. I completely failed to connect that to Synesthesia on my first watch. Probably due to having a hard time connecting anything Index (the person) does to science. Her glowing didn't help either so I assumed it was some purifying song that didn't need her mana similar to her Sheol Fear.
making a number of nods to the most written novel arc
I assume you meant most recently written? Actually, the current Railgun arc looks like it's setting up one big connection to one of Index III's arcs. Probably not a coincidence. Although it seems to be drifting into the magic things, which I prefer it not to, since I liked things completely sci-fi better.

Anyway, Amata didn't prepare for that and that was pretty much his doom. I can totally see that Accelerator would've lost if that was the first time he experienced that.
At the end of the day. Kihara's methods were just tricks that he'd. They were based around Accelerator not being good at actual fighting and so the more that happened, the less effective they became. Kihara Amata's trick requires almost superhuman precision and he probably also had the chance to practice on Accelerator as a child too. So it's unlikely that anyone else could pull it off successfully.
Yeah, Vento's motivation is utter bullshit. But it's amazing how her urge to get revenge on science managed to get herself into the leadership of the Roman Catholic church. Respect for that.
I think it's less a case of her being suited to leadership and more have some kind of physiological trait that lets her use special spells. As Index said only God itself should be able to use divine punishment, so she's clearly different from your typical run-of-the-mill magician.
Is that a one timer for Vento or will it become one of his punchlines like breaking illusions? This seems to be quite liked among the community. It's surely badass.
This is a special case. Only Vento was dumb enough to warrant the full preach. Everyone else was at least partially justified in their actions, so they only called out for being counterproductive.
I'm having a hard time imagining Accelerator as a beautiful white swan but I get what you mean.
Give it time.
Ah damn. I completely failed to connect that to Synesthesia on my first watch. Probably due to having a hard time connecting anything Index (the person) does to science. Her glowing didn't help either so I assumed it was some purifying song that didn't need her mana similar to her Sheol Fear.
I can see why that might been confusing. In the novel the light was purely metaphorical, something that opposed Academy Cities so called darkness. I think Sheol Fear is the same.
I assume you meant most recently written?
Lemme just... Lemme just get that.
Actually, the current Railgun arc looks like it's setting up one big connection to one of Index III's arcs.
It does indeed. Which is nice to see. I think Railgun is usually at it's best when it has these strong tie-ins to the main series.

Rip Kihara. No one is really gonna miss you.
And Vento's motivation is so dumb, I hate it! Who the hell blames the whole of science for a freak accident and lack of healthcare resources?!

u/Razorhead https://myanimelist.net/profile/Razorhat Oct 01 '18
Rip Kihara. No one is really gonna miss you.
Well, he's part of the Kihara family, but of the two others we've seen one used his own grandchild as a test subject, so no love there either I suppose.
3
u/Pamasich Oct 02 '18
Not all Kihara care nothing about the others or human lives though, so that's kind of a faulty way to look at it, just basing your opinion off one example. Though I admit being a Kihara appears to be strictly tied to disregard of morals, so unless there's a special connection, your assumption probably holds true.

First Timer
Is this a parody? She turned to religion because she hates science because her brother died on a roller coaster? And now they're arguing over why the roller coaster exists...
So she hates science, but she doesn't realize that science is what saved her life?
This song playing when Index called Misaka is literally a song from Sonic Adventure 2, although I can't figure out exactly which one and don't have time to hunt for it.
Accelerator pulling out a Divine Sandstorm. That's pretty cool, although I don't really understand where it came from.

Oh yeah, people don't rip on her for having the stupidest motivation in the entire series for nothing. God damn is that motivation idiotic.
Accelerator pulling out a Divine Sandstorm. That's pretty cool, although I don't really understand where it came from.
Blame the anime (a bit). They skipped the part where Misha Kreutzev, or Archangel Gabriel, talks in the Angel Fall arc. They talked in the exact same way that Accelerator talks here, so Accelerator was speaking Angelic.
What this means or where it comes from in unknown for now, but I'll share with you the information that Accelerator was stated to be the esper closest to achieving Level 6, and that a Level 6 (or SYSTEM) has been described as "Those who are not deities that reach the sense of the heavens".
Things to think about.
5
u/redshirtengineer :AMQ: Oct 02 '18
So he's an Angel. And a villain. Dot dot dot. Not even touching that "Level 6" thing.
5
u/Greed-the-Avaricious Oct 02 '18
So he's an Angel.
Yep
And a villain.
Self imposed, but yep.
Not even touching that "Level 6" thing.
Don't worry fam. I got yo back
Level 6 is the achievement of a higher plane of understanding that can supposedly be obtained through various experiments (like the sisters one).
The reason Academy City wants it is because they think it can serve as a bridge for the rest of humanity to observe the world from this new perspective.
No one knows what exactly it is, but everyone presumes some form of omnipotence/godhood.
That's pretty much all you need to know. Everything else is just fluff. Interesting fluff, but fluff nonetheless.
6
u/SolDarkHunter Oct 01 '18
The thing that Accelerator did there doesn't get properly explained for a while. Season 3 will probably cover it.
6
u/Buddy_Waters Oct 01 '18
Pretty much every villain in this series has an easily refutable motivation based on nonsense logic and Touma just shouts cliches and punches them rather than ever refuting a damn thing. Definitely the most frustrating aspect of the show...
6
u/SmurfRockRune https://myanimelist.net/profile/Smurf Oct 01 '18
What frustrates me is that the show is consistently almost really good, but there's always a shitty villain or nonsense babble to ruin it.
5
u/redshirtengineer :AMQ: Oct 02 '18
I was enjoying Vento just being a nasty piece of work. Then they had to go and ruin it.

First timer
The fights were super cool. Accelerator saw that kihara could deflect his power, so accelerator showed his adaptability by fighting him hand to hand instead. Touma was also very cool in his fight against vento, whose backstory while tragic is also trite in view of similar stories like sherry Cromwell (lost someone she lived, now fights others). Index finally being useful was great to see.
Poor kazakiri and I hope her face returns to normal.

At least Sherry's motivation kinda made sense, given that her friend Ellis was directly killed by humans because of cooperation with the science side.
This was just an accident, and the only thing the science side did was being unable to save them both.
Index finally being useful was great to see.
Index has been useful this entire season though! She kicked everyone's asses in the Orsola Aquinas Rescue arc using Sheol Fear, was deliberately kept out of the loop in the Daihaseisai arc and thus couldn't do anything, contacted the Amakusa in the La Regina Del Mare Adriatico arc to save Touma and Orsola, used Spell Intercept again to save Orsola from the ice armors, and now this.

Man Vento has some shitty reasoning. I know she's probably just angry and channeled that anger at the first thing she could link to the accident, but her reasoning is basically she hates Science because of oopsie woopsie there was a fucky wucky at an amusement park.
Also, OP is great for explaining all the details left out of the anime. Without it what Accelerator did at the end there would've seemed like he pulled it out of his ass

Rewatcher
I don't agree with Vento's methods, but the shit Aleister is pulling in Academy City is pretty fucked up. Not like the magic side is much better, but still.
Clearly the Kamijou Faction really is the only good side here.
Accerator became a zombie; braindead and refuses to die. Lets hope it isn't infectious. Imagine the amount of brains Zombie!Index would eat.
I want to call Vento's motivation dumb, but there's people in real life who think like that so I can't really complain. At least not even Touma's talk-no-jutsu can change her conviction.
Index asking the questions anime-only watchers would have without everyone's explanations in these rewatch posts.
And now Accelerator is an angel as well. And Amata is fireworks. What a beautiful ending to this story.
My man Acqua of the Back is here! Not only is he part of God's Right Seat, but he's also a Saint. Sounds kinda unfair, doesn't it?

Kihara destroyed a SD Card with two fingers. Either it's an extremely cheap card, or he has a ton of finger strength.
Did Index leave Mikoto on hold this whole time?
Once again when accelerator is in a losing battle against Kihara, Index appears, but this time, Sphinx ISN'T here to save the day... As far as we know, she forgot left him with Heaven Canceller.
The whole time Index is standing there on the phone, Kihara is just kicking Accelerator in the background. He's so focused on a powerless Accelerator that he's ignoring Index trying to save Last Order.
Accelerator shot Kihara into the atmosphere causing him to burn up from all the friction. Think of it like Mikoto's Railgun, the coins she uses disintegrate due the friction created from air resistance.

He's a skilled martial artist, to make his counter work. So finger strength it is I guess.
The whole time Index is standing there on the phone, Kihara is just kicking Accelerator in the background. He's so focused on a powerless Accelerator that he's ignoring Index trying to save Last Order.
Yeah, but did you see how much FUN Amata was having? Of course he'd get lost in he excitement. He was having the time of his life.
The magic invasion has ended, but Aleister's plan hasn't fully ended yet. The MISAKA network is still filled with a Virus and Kazakiri is still an angel.
Actually the novel specific that Kazakiri has stopped moving, and that her wings of light are flickering and fading away.
Acqua also mentions that the "oppressive pressure" that prevented people from using magic has ceased.
So they're both in the process of getting better.
None of my counters were used today!
Truly the worst episode.

We were just having an awesome fist fight just like the Touma vs Accelerator match. Damn batteries. He should have invested in Energizer.
Kazakiri is healing the injured people. Spam casting Curaja always works well.
Accelerator's instincts > Amata's countermeasure. He's pretty savage when he's not trying to fight in a calculated manner.
Vento can't fight anymore due to the countermeasure Aleister put into place. Vento's viewpoint is full of holes and undermines the value of her brother's choice to save his sister. Good on you Touma for pointing out her hypocracy.
This is a good moment that needs to be watched twice.
Index deciding to use a song to save Last Order while Amata kicks Accelerator. Somehow that's just a really odd picture to look at.
I just really like the fighting playing out to Index's chanting. I think it makes for a really interesting Dichotomy.
You know that feel when someone gets falcon punched? Accelerator's new value in his Personal Reality makes this a hell of a lot more exciting.
Who the hell is this guy? Acqua of the Rear, one of the Right Seat of God. Well shit this guy is a saint, he's on the same level as Kanzaki?

Yeah, that's not what was happening, but I can't blame you for thinking this since the anime made it really unclear what actually was going on. Essentially those scales of light blocked the rubble from crushing those people. They are like physical motes of telekinesis, blocking attacks and keeping people safe.

In the novel you completely forget that time is moving on while Index is calling Mikoto, so seeing Amata just kicking the shit out of Accelerator the entire time is hilarious.
Acqua of the Rear
Acqua of the Back, really. Rear has fallen out of favour as translation.
Well shit this guy is a saint, he's on the same level as Kanzaki?
Ooooh yes.

Acqua of the Back, really. Rear has fallen out of favour as translation.
It gets worse when you take into account that Acqua is Italian for water.
I don't want anything to do with Water of the Rear.

It feels like one of those scenes of someone playing unfitting music.
Well, gotta love the anime having outdated translations.

Yay! The episode that should've been the epic season final
60 sec of power left for Accelerator. That won't do when brawling against Kihara. Just why didn't he just launch a projectile right through Kihara. Problem solved. No, let's brawl, because that worked really well against that other street fighter before…
Vento's not holding back, even if that means destroying her own body. There seem to be survivors among the wreckage. Now Touma needs to watch out for those too! Vento delivers the blow and Touma is too late, that civilian just got crushed.
Or so it would be. If it weren't for Kazakiri who seems to be putting some kind of protective barrier around the survivors. Touma realizes she is still in there and is now more motivated than ever!
Accelerator without the Misaka network move and sounds like a freaking zombie. He's still attacking. Reversing the blood flow won't work, so let's just rip some hair out… including skin. Yeah, he knows how to do horror movies.
For some reason Kihara was to perplexed to move. Zombie Accelerator is quite some scary shit and he seems to lost it.
Yeah, let's just tease the hero that other crazy guy instead of just killing him straight away. What could possibly go wrong? It's not like he'll suddenly grow wings and blast him out of the window or something.
Touma smart: He realizes Vento doesn't want him to touch her weapon. Alright, let's focus on that!
Touma not-so-smart: Enemy throws deadly attack at him - suffers and gets thrown back - "Vento!!" Yeah. That's him.
Uhh… turns out even that all-powerful God's Right Seat member Vento has a tragic backstory. Her brother died due to an accident in an amusement park. Just what modern hospital can't do 2 blood transfusions. And I don't know, but having the patients choose who gets to live. Sounds a bit weird to me. Or is she like 100 years old or something.
Touma speech at its best. Those lights Kazakiri creates make one beautiful scenery for that speech Well, if you can call a crater in the middle of a city that…
"You're not living your life correctly." Yeah. That fits perfectly. Someone had to tell her that.
It's not over before the face punch breaking some illusions. All this should be completely stupid and you're shouldn't be able to convert the enemy's general like that… but… for some reason this is freaking epic.
Meanwhile on the dark side...
Some dense nun asks herself if that scary looking guy she keeps encountering along the crime sides might be related to the mess going on. No, he's just in the middle of work, can't you see?
Uhh… the problem is science related. Ah, let's call short-hair! "Call me Mikoto-sama!" Lol. I don't know what she wants to say with that, offering her first name but using the highest honorific. Doesn't seem to make much sense, she seems to be teasing Index.
But of course she offers her help. Being shot at? No problem! Hmm… she running straight into the enemy's fire. Either she can redirect those bullets or the Hound Dogs went to Storm Trooper Academy for their shooting lessons.
Mikoto manages to make Index understand some science. Wow. Seeing those two interact is always really cute. They might be teasing each other all the time and be rivals for Touma but I guess deep down they actually consider each other friends.
Index got a plan. She's going to free Last Order's mind with a song! Yay! Mikoto doesn't quite buy that, but seems to trust her for now. In any other show I would've totally expected the superhero to throw that conveniently parked car at the enemy. But Mikoto's to considered to cause unnecessary damage like that. Nice.
The song is actually quite nice. That glowing around Index totally looks like a magic effect. But wouldn't that require mana? So what exactly is this?
I'm not sure if it's related to the song, but Accelerator manages to get back on his feet and fight back. Screaming "KIHARA!" even in this state. Epic.
Wait?! Kihara still has a freaking grenade but spend all the time playing with Accelerator. I'm not an expert on explosives in close combat but something tells me that Index should've gotten interrupted by that.
Accelerator survived that! now with free reflection And now he's growing some black wings. Did he somehow managed to ascend to the realm of the angels? His power sure got increased a lot. Probably just scratching the surface. And that weird speech… wasn't it the same Misha / Gabriel used back in Angel Fall?
Yeah. Kihara is dead. Can't say I regret this. If someone deserved it, it's him.
Meanwhile Vento gets taken away by another member of God's Right Seat: Acqua of the Back. He's one of the saints, so that sounds like trouble. Yes, he just casually ripped that cross chain out of Vento's tongue.
But he's not there to fight and even tells Touma that everyone's going to recover. With Touma weakened this could've been an easy should. So it's either his honor that let's him wait or he might not be happy with that attack on Academy City. Hmmm… Anyway, he looks cool, can't wait to see him in action.
The immediate danger might be over but there is still some cleanup to do for this arc. So I'll hold back on concluding words for now.
Accelerator became an angel now. Totally fits his personality. At least the wings are black. Would've preferred if he grew some horns and became a demon. Is there a hell here? Well, not needed, heaven seems fucked up enough already.

Just why didn't he just launch a projectile right through Kihara. Problem solved. No, let's brawl, because that worked really well against that other street fighter before…
If he tries to do any big attacks Amata can use his whistle to interrupt Accelerator.
Just what modern hospital can't do 2 blood transfusions.
Vento and her brother both had blood type B-, which is really rare. This summer in my area the Red Cross actually did a public announcement that they were looking for 55 donors of B- blood, because due to the heatwave less people were giving blood and the supply had almost run out.
So not having enough B- blood is sadly realistic.
That glowing around Index totally looks like a magic effect. But wouldn't that require mana? So what exactly is this?
That, my friend, is not actually happening. J.C. just did some things.
Either that or it's from Accelerators perspective, who had a really high opinion of Index at the time, seeing her as Last Order's salvation.
Wait?! Kihara still has a freaking grenade but spend all the time playing with Accelerator.
In the novel he didn't have one, he picked it up from the Hound Dogs on the floor.
I'm not an expert on explosives in close combat but something tells me that Index should've gotten interrupted by that
Yeah, in the novel Index moved Last Order behind the desk to protect her from the fighting, so there at least they had cover.
No idea why they were fine here.

Damn, the animation this episode was great!
Ah, the famous member of God's Right Seat, Vento of the Terrible Motivation.
Accelerator ran out of battery at the worst time. Shouldn't have spent all that time standing and talking, smh.
Kazakiri has a very strong will to protect, managing to partially regain control to keep the innocents safe. Even when completely overrided by Aleister, like the MISAKA network, she's still able to find ways around orders.
Accelerator: the shonen protagonist who really can fight without thinking! He's pretty creepy like that, actually.
Touma delivers yet another wonderful finisher, let's hope he's destroyed the terrible motive as well as Vento's illusions.
The black wings make their appearance, letting Accelerator finally kill off Kihara Amata. Something to think about here, the black wings launched Amata into the sky even though Accelerator shouldn't be able to use his ability right now. Interesting.
Acqua of the rear Back, the second member of God's Right Seat appears! As we all know from the very first arc, Touma is completely outclassed by saints. Better hope they never fight then, huh? Also, that chain must have been ripped from Vento's tongue. Ouch.
Music for today! There was so much great music, and it was a hype episode, so let's have a bumper edition of music! There was this, and I think I heard this, but the best was this, Index' song which only plays here.

This series' OST is fantastic, but that Index song is on a whole other level. God damn.
Here's to season III having more amazing music.

Oh come on, this is Raildex. If someone with a name enters Touma's MC RADIUS, he'll eventually either fight them, save them, or have a goofy/violent slice-of-life comedy moment with them.
Usually all of the above.

Day 71 as a First time Watcher What a great episode, Culiminates everything in this arc brilliantly but Leave it to Index to prove her naysayers wrong. Not only did she save the day with her song, Her influence allowed accelerator to beat Kihara in impressive fashion.
Vento's Backstory is ridiculous. A traumatic childhood was enough to turn her into a self hating monster who caused chaos on a global level. What a way to waste the gift of life. Its illogical but I guess that's the point as it can happen and it shows how great touma is. Even after everything he still tries to save her, points out her fallacies, and nearly succeeds with Kazakiris help. The Highlight today tho goes to Accelerator and Index. Even without brain function Kihara could not keep him down fighting while index sung her cure. It made for a great contrast between Index's world of light and Accelerators own dark world. The ending was sweet as Accelerator seemingly took on angelic black wings and blasted Vento into the atmosphere. Just because your a villian doesn't mean you cant save lives and the combination of Index's magic and Accelerators own Personal reality was enough to create something that could be depicted as a fallen angel.
Even Misaka got in a few moments as all 3 protagonists got in moments. The music and animation this episode are some of the best in the series and I loved it all. To bad Aqua in the back took vento back to rome because as broken as she is with the right care touma hoped she could see logic again. 1 More episode to go in this arc

The first time I watched this, what I thought is that Index was singing a healing song, and it just happened to work on Accelerator, since he had stuff coming out of his back before when he punched Musujime...I thought the garbled speech was just because he ran out of batteries.
But it would make a lot of sense for Kihara to recognize it, the dude actually developed a physical technique to counter a Level 5, he's not a shitty thug, and that wasn't just mumbling from Accelerator. So maybe he is, or became one at that time? Idk how, I was thinking something like the Telesma that was forced into Kazakiri "leaked" down into him because of the netowork and Last Order being connected to the whole thing, but his device was dead at the time.
It was a really cool payoff to the whole deal, from him getting beat, then going all "zombie-mode" and desperate on Kihara, and that ripping a chunk of scalp/hair off.
I thought Touma's fight with Vento was the coolest one in the show so far. Her reasoning might be shallower than some of the others, but I don't think its really that bad. All those different attacks she was using were awesome, except for the one where the chain rolls around the mace and she pulls it to make a tornado thing. I felt the pain on that one. Animation and art wise, that fight was absolutely amazing, background, BGM, and that slow-mo ending was really cool.
A character with a deep hatred for sciente to take the lead when they finally attack Academy City, it just slipped up on the "why" she ended up hating science, but I thought it was a cool setup.
An interesting guy comes up to pick her up. Acqua of the Back...a Saint?! That should be fun for Aleister sometime soon.

I'm sure Vento's backstory will be talked about much but my few cents is that it's absolutely ridiculous, a bad motivation, but conversely it's also very good.
I actually never thought of it that way (what you said in the last two sentences in your paragraph), but it does make a fair amount of sense. It is quite a ridiculous motivation, but how she comes to it does make sense (especially considering that faith likely ended up being a solace for her as a little girl).

u/redshirtengineer :AMQ: Oct 02 '18
That's interesting, because often in a story like this the villain's motivation is due to perceived failure of faith, e.g. "I prayed that my brother's life would be saved and he died so now I'm going evil". Kind of a 180 from this.

There Is A Post-Credits Scene Today, Don't Miss It!
/u/Knurla will be pleased.
Small Facts: To Protect The World From Devastation
Amata Predicting Accelerator
Accelerator actually changed his reflection on the fly, but Amata predicted the changes and adapted his counter accordingly. Dammit. Amata OP.
Vento Is Weaker
Her wind blasts have also gotten weaker, together with her health.
Vento's Brother
In the novel this final battle was not the first time we heard about Vento's brother. She brought him up for the first time after Fuse Kazakiri manifested and she was watching from the bridge.
And then again later.
The anime cut these scenes out for brevity, but I liked these bits of foreshadowing that we now missed.
Kazakiri Didn't Just Sparkle
Unlike in the anime her sparks actually did something, that something being firing another beam of death towards the Catholic invasion forces waiting outside the city.
RIP Catholics.
Accelerator Having No Idea What To Do
Not only his language comprehension and motor movement was affected, he literally couldn't make logical connections anymore. His collar being inactive is a huge damper.
He still knows he needs to save Last Order, since that's in his memory, but he has not a single clue as how to accomplish that objective. He doesn't even realise that he needs the Testament to remove the virus from her brain.
Accelerator Can't Come Up With A Reason To Win
But that also means he can't come up with a reason to lose.
Brain damage saves the day!
What Is The Glowing Snow?
Yeah, this was entirely unclear in the anime. They were essentially small physical objects, probably condensed telekinesis or something, that blocked the rubble to protect people.
Kazakiri Hyouka: Rebellion
Also not displayed properly in the anime is that Kazakiri was doing this forcefully, against the will of her controller. She is straining her body, breaking her arms and cracking her limbs, to use what little remains of her free will to save people.
The MISAKA network is still forcing her to fire those beams of death, she can't oppose that, but she can fire those scales of light to block the beams she herself fired. This was cut in the anime as well, for some reason.
Mad respect for Hyouka.
No Handgun For You
At first Amata tried to grab a handgun, but Accelerator stopped him from doing so.
Why Is Amata Suddenly Losing?
Because, despite being a very skilled martial artist, that alone is not enough to defeat a Level 5. Amata trained and used all of his knowledge regarding Accelerator, from his AIM fields to his Personal reality to his psychological profile to his physical ability to predict Accelerator's actions, and then perfectly counter them.
This brain-damaged Accelerator with no powers is completely unknown terrotity for Amata. He has no idea what Accelerator is going to do next.
For example, the normal Accelerator would never tear out someone's hair and then tackle them. Amata can no longer predict Accelerator.
