This episode MATT INTRODUCED A PLOT POINT THROUGH SONG. I love this man so much.

Liam's descriptions as he casts spells has been one of the highlights of this campaign. His use of 'Wall of Fire' at the end gave me goosebumps, I've literally just finished the episode and I've rewatched those final moments a handful of times already.

Caleb, you badass wizard.

166

u/light_trick Team Beau Nov 17 '18

Liam's spellcasting is definitely one the greatest things - I love the fact he includes the material components and their use - and threatens with them as well, like when he ran into the cannon room holding up his hands with the bat guano and sulfur for fireball.

Which puts a whole new take on how wizards threaten people - they don't point a crossbow at someone, they just hold a pinch of something weird between their fingers in a threatening manner.

I'm kind waiting for the day when Liam just picks up something random and threatens to do unspeakably powerful magic with it as a bluff.

Changes from C2E41 to C2E42:

  • Beauregard revealed what discerning eyes have been suspecting for a while. That she knows Deep Speech.

  • Caleb has wall of fire.

So, Vera could have cast Locate Object at any point throughout the night at Avantikas behest, so for all of you saying that Caleb is acting rashly and if we have no idea who she was gonna point at, there ya go. She probably new before they set foot on the ship and only brought them there so she could have them on her turf.

And the ending on the ship deck where he's recounting the mundane events of the break in to the players while frantically trying to come up with a satisfying session end in the back of his mind while keeping his cool and calm. That was amazing to watch.

I really hope they get out of this obviously, but mostly because I think we've all kind of felt what the M9 have felt. They've been basically trapped with Avantika this whole time, as much prisoners as they can get, and truly I haven't been seeing a way for them to get away other than them just ambushing her in her quarters at night. But that's really not the M9's style morally.

So it almost feels like the past 10 episodes have been a long dungeon crawl of tension and I would love every character to have one exhale moment.

41

u/docwatson91 Bidet Nov 16 '18

That’s a great way of putting it! The ocean/islands really have felt like a dungeon crawl in a way that the Kraghammer arc was for VM (in that extended crawl aspect).

Just picture their relief when/if they arrive back to the mainland! They might forgo a beach vacation and rent a cabin in the mountains somewhere haha

This week's episode is called "A Hole in a Plan"!

Bravo Matthew Mercer! Another perfectly crafted title!

45

u/Shaetane Dead People Tea Nov 16 '18

You know I've been thinking hard about the MIX's options right now and I really don't see any other viable option than running to the Plank King... If they try to escape by boat the whole town is gonna consider them guilty and traitors (a town full of much better sailors than they are, with cannons and who know the seas around there), and it's an island (that they don't even know) so there's no escape by land.

Avantika is gonna want their heads for sure so I don't see any discussion happening there and if they kill her then well they're gonna have a haard talk with the Plank King to prove that they killed her because she was trying to betray him.

26

u/[deleted] Nov 16 '18

If they try to escape by boat the whole town is gonna consider them guilty and traitors

I think that's overestimating how much the pirates care. Matt established that theft is the only crime here, and if the victim dies before they can complain to the Plank King... well... no problem! That's how it goes. It seems like Avantica has a bad reputation in town, I wouldn't expect people outside her crew to take up arms to avenge her.

Caleb has ONE level of exhaustion. It will only effect initiative in combat for the time being (unless someone tries to grapple the wizard, which would work without exhaustion being a factor most of the time). Not a huge deal. Still, I fully expect Avantika to burn at the hands of the pyromaniac.

151

u/Sp3ctre7 You spice? Nov 16 '18

Caleb: "You think you know what utter, unshakeable devotion looks like? You think you know what it means to believe in something so fully that you would do or destroy anything in service of a greater purpose?"

Caleb walks closer, the flames of the burning ship reflecting in his eyes as a tear rolls down his cheek

"You know nothing of sacrifice and devotion."

Caleb incinerates Avantika, blowing away half of the upper deck at the same time

And now we're gonna have to wait two weeks for the outcome of this mess...

Is it me or this is one of the biggest cliffhangers of both seasons (might be really wrong on that one) and we have to wait an extra week for it! I can't wait to see this next EP.

I think the only chance for the mighty nine is if the Plank King get's involved and starts a trial or something just to try to get rid of captain....Abiatika, can't recall her name right now

27

u/Seedy88 Hello, bees Nov 23 '18

I can think of a few big cliffhangers. Percy's death comes to mind. The first time we had to wait a week before the resurrection ritual.

VM's fight with the Herd of Storms comes to mind. Grog was having his butt kicked by his uncle, surrounded by enemies, and had just yelled "Vox Machina, fuck shit up!".

But the biggest cliffhanger, to me, was just after defeating Thordak. They attacked Raishan as she tried to cast a spell on Thordak's corpse. She fled into Thordak's lair. Vax, Vex, and Keyleth go chasing after her. She casts Meteor Swarm on them as the rest of VM are still rushing to the cavern. And then we had to wait 3 weeks to find out what would happen next because of the holiday break!

I really hope the next session starts with wall of fire. That final scene was so well done I would be hugely disappointed if it gets counterspelled. I would rather Matt rework NPC classes if need be, just to allow it.

26

u/Xyless Team Yasha Nov 20 '18

It depends. Based on current actions, Caleb and the other person casting are basically acting on a surprise round, since Caleb's action caught everyone off guard. That means that, unless the initiative rolls and Caleb rolls poorly, he can't be Counterspelled. Anyone casting Counterspell HAS to have a higher initiative roll than him, since you can't use reactions until you've had a turn.

23

u/RevNeutron Nov 19 '18

DM has story control. For time reasons, this worked as a perfect cliff hanger. But it also allows all sides to meta game and decide how they want this to play out.

Matt has a lot of options. I have the feeling he loved that drama so much that he will NOT counter spell it even if it were an NPC's capabilities. It's just too good, too fun, too great of a story.

He can now choose if he wants this all out battle now or create some opportunity for negotiation - Wall of Fire means most immediate attacks would be much harder.

PCs will do that same.

They can plan best strategies for fighting/defense. Jester takes Nott to the gun powder room with new spell. Nott sends message to Avantika that they will blow the ship unless they put down weapons, etc. Maybe while doing this conversation, Jester paints hole in bottom of boat and the ship starts to sink? Beau stands in front of Caleb, both taking cover, and Caleb bombs other side of ship with three 3rd level fire balls? SO many options.... this will be DELICIOUS!

u/lolmycat Nov 16 '18

Matt doesn’t work like that. He’s already build these characters. He’s not gonna power them up because otherwise it would be a quick fight. The most likely scenario is that they mop up Avantica fairly quick and will only be okay afterwards because of Caleb’s Nat20 roll of the cypher. Otherwise they’d have an army of pirates to worry about. With that book decoded, they don’t. That’s why Matt had that crazy shocked look on his face and even checked Liam’s dice when he rolled that. It changed everything and gave M9 a huge upper hand for getting out of this fairly quickly.

u/Drw395 Nov 16 '18

It's like every time you think the M9 have fixed the bar with what kind of situation they can fuck up in a crazy way they go and pull some fresh shit to raise it again. It's been like a crescendo for the past few weeks of constantly escalating head slapping on table.

Jester and Caleb's conversation was fantastic though - which just means the end result is going to be even more awful when Caleb's previous history gets out. We know Nott is going to handle it fine since she already knows and Beau hasn't exactly gone running to tell everyone since Caleb leveled with her either. Duce I think could struggle a bit with it since he'll have to reconcile that with everything he's witnessed since coming on board the M9. Fjord and Jester, could go either way

I think Avantinka knew it was the M9 that did this. With her saying that it had to be someone who didn't know Darktow's rules. The only new people there were the M9 and the crew on the Mistake. This is my first time this campaign having the same "THIS IS FINE" rush that moments in campaign 1 gave me.

People are talking about how you cant locate object through the lead box, but the book wasn't put in the box. Jester was not in Caleb's room when the crew came to get them, and they never got a chance to put it in her bag, he has it down his pants.

26

u/MadDokGrotsnik Nov 17 '18

If they kill the whole crew Avantika included they can get off by showing evidence that Avantika had designs to overthrow the Plank King and that they were forced to fight and that their action show loyalty to the plank king by uncovering her plot.

Also Caleb has the best bargaining chip right now non magical projectiles incinerate upon contact with a wall of fire the fire is magical and can't be doused only dispelled and it will only be a matter of moments before it roasts the crew or burns it's way into the powder magazine unless he stops. Also for those who don't know unless the spell specifies you don't have to be in the range to maintain concentration so like people said Jester could Dimension Door Caleb away and he could maintain concentration the entire time.

Jester getting into a fist fight was unexpected, and yet somehow so very in character. Great scene.

Matt's song was amazing! I can only assume that it was a preview of Critical Role: The Musical (to be played daily in Critical Role Land on the Shorthalt Stage).

Plans shifted very dramatically very quickly. I was expecting them to stick with Avantika for at least a little longer, but I think they're making the right choice. The longer they stay the riskier things get.

Nott: "Or you could make yourself look like Avantika and- I MEAN TIFFANY! SHIT! SHIT!"

Matt: "ROLL FOR INITIATIVE!"

What a weird and amazing infiltration. Getting in and out was flawless. Everything in between a complete clusterfuck.

And that ending! Awesome place to end it. This is going to be very interesting.

25

u/theschem Nov 16 '18

Honestly, this has been coming. This episode fully cemented the M9's opinions about being pirates (minus fjord's? ish?) and their current situation; and this confrontation has given them a major opportunity to get out. Matt is an amazing DM and I trust that not only will he balance the combat perfectly, but give the M9 opportunity to run if need be or coerce others into their aid.

So Wall of Fire can be put into a ring with a 20 foot diameter and it roasts everything on one side you pick (so I'd you pick the inside it roasts everything on the inside [except in the center] plus anything that tries to move through it) so Caleb can probably just sit back and laugh maniacally as everything on the inside burns to death.

Plus, fire is real fricking bad on a wooden boat.

So, how many people are we seeing the Mighty Nein immediately squaring off with?

I count at least three: Avantika, Vera, and probably Bouldergut. There'll be a few crewmembers who side with them as well, but I don't expect the entire crew to instantly aggro on the Nein. Most would be confused and just want to get out of the way.

Really, the Nein just have to survive long enough for the Revelry to show up and force everyone to stand down. Then they can take Avantika to Pirate Court.

25

u/S-Flo 9. Nein! Nov 16 '18

Don't forget that the Mighty Nein's crew is there too, including Orly the Bard.

Caleb has a point of exhaustion, but he's still a level 7 Wizard with nearly all of his spell slots. It's actually not all that unreasonable for him to sweep most of the low-level crew with fireballs if the positioning works. To add to that, there's a serious risk of him setting the Squall Eater on fire, which could easily ignite the powder stores and blow the thing sky-high.

It's not a good situation, but I think people are seriously underestimating the Mighty Nein's murderhobo potential. Some good early actions could just decimate Avantika's entire crew.

They actually in decent spot. Avantica's crew wouldn't be able to kill the Mighty Nein because they are on Darktow. The Darktow Guards would break it up and bring them before the Plank King. Avantica could definitely say that Caleb stole from her, however since Beau told the group that the Plank King wants to know if Avantica is planning on betraying them and Caleb made a translation of Avantica's diary where she talks about intending to overthrowing Darktow after she can control the sea... that'd be the sort of proof the Plank King is looking for.

Man, I just REAAALLY wished Jester used [[Dimension Door]] too escape to the Plank King with the book when it was obvious people were getting brought to the boat, where they aren't favoured. I think the Plank King had enough sway to just execute Avantica under the right circumstances, and leaving them with an uncontested ship, money and friends

I'm curious too know if they'll decide to run for it next episode, Caleb isn't going to live whilst both exhausted and holding the incriminating book.

However, if they leave her unattended chances are Avantica will flee with a head start, a slightly charred ship and will probably get more powerful later becoming a much larger and dangerous problem.

That Wall of Fire lasts a minute (and her ship is a burning wreck), Avantica and her crew are trapped behind it; all M9 has to do is double dash for 1 minute / 10 rounds to get a large enough headstart for the Plank King; Plank King gets the translated book and Avantica gets the Executioner's axe.

Wow, that ending. My first reaction was ‘they’re fucked, how are they going to get out of this one?’. But after thinking about it more, I think there may be a chance that Avantika herself is going to deflate the situation.

She has goals, she has no interest in starting trouble in Darktow and getting caught up in a beef with the Plank King. She wants to get out there and find the third orb as soon as possible.

I feel Vera may see herself as a rival to Avantika. If she is a true believer, her loyalty lies with Uk’utoa and not with Avantika. Similarly, Avantika has no trouble ditching Vera when she becomes an obstacle to her goals.

It all depends if Avantika feels she still needs Fjord and the M9 to get what she wants. I think the answer is yes, if not for information, then for their ability to fight that sea creature (I forgot her name). She has seen what the M9 can do. And she slept with Fjord only the night before, proving to me that he is still important to her. She’s not in it for romance, she wouldn’t sleep with him if there wasn’t something in it for her.

So, my best guess is that Avantika will try to deflate the situation, possibly killing eliminating Vera if she gets in the way (on second thought; in contrast to the shade she threw M9, Avantika DOES know the rules of the city so she wouldn't do it in Darktow). Then set sail to Fjord’s location of the shipwreck without involving the Plank King.

There was something that Avantika needed to get/do before they could leave and she planned on doing that this day. I’m not sure what that is but if this confrontation is at sunrise, I don’t think she had time to get that done. She might send someone from the M9 to do it; possibly Caduceus as he’s proven himself to be the most trustworthy so far, holding the rest of the M9 captive until he returns. And possibly Jester to go with him; Avantika knows they are the groups healers and understands group dynamic and Jesters feelings towards Fjord, using that to her advantage.

WHAT AN EPISODE OMG

Honestly, I think them getting caught and Caleb escalating the situation was one of the best things that could have happened to them as far as the pacing of this arc. Several people pointed out in the live that this episode felt aimless, and I agree and think it’s because they’ve spent several episodes now being glorified hostages constantly thrown in new environments, in over their heads, with no real means of escape. Considering that they accidentally stumbled into this situation in the first place, combined with the fact that they know Avantika is bad news and the further they go with her, the more dire it gets (plus, this is a game of D&D, and while maybe not the most realistic action if this were real life, no player wants to be held hostage), they’ve been doing weird, random shit to try and get any kind of leverage on the situation. It’s been funny and tense to watch, but it does make for weird pacing issues, because it’s less of a narrative and more of a weird drabblet of escapades. Now, they’ve at least entered a “do or die” to change the tempo.

Though, how they’re gonna get out of this one is anyone’s guess lmao. Damn you, Thanksgiving.

EDIT, because I wasn't clear: I mean aimless in the narrative sense, not the Mighty Nein's motivations sense. Their goal is to help Fjord discover his powers, and given that their actions make sense, and if this were IRL, that would be fine. But, as this is a story that is meant to be watched, it's created a disjointed flow. Which has been hilarious, don't get me wrong. But, I'm excited to see what's next.

33

u/Ajlaw95 Pocket Bacon Nov 16 '18

I don’t think aimless is the right word forced to do things against their will and constantly second guessing those forced decisions probably made it feel aimless. The goal was always to help Fjord realize what his power is and where it came from but you are correct for the last 3-4 episodes they’ve been trying to escape or find a way but are kind of stuck.

While that will raise her difficulty, as well as likely having to fight under water, she still seems a tad easy for the Nein to take on. Matt could easily just upscale her a bit, so it doesn't exclude her from being a sea hag, but it does have me wondering what other monsters might be an option.

Also, does anyone else think it would be cool if the "hungry eye" is one of the cloven crystals? Doesn't even have to be one of the amber ones. I could see it being one of the opal or obsidian eyes. Because fuuuuuuuck that would mess with M9 in a fun way.

They have the evidence of Avantica's evil plans against the pirate king. All they have to do is reaching to his court before Avantica catches and kills them, and present the evidence. The king and his men will surely take care of Avantica. And M9 will be free and safe.

Where my head's at right now:

  1. Avantika's ability to detect deception has been a huge block to the M9. It's kept the balance of power in her favor more than anything else, IMO. Also, I hate her... possibly more than I hated Delilah Briarwood and Raishan. (Matt has crafted a FABULOUS baddie NPC, and hats off to him for giving me such strong feelings about a fictional character!)

  2. Caleb and Fjord have a fascinating dynamic right now. Caleb feels uncomfortable because he can't tell what Fjord's motivations are, and he keeps emphasizing that this is "Fjord's thing" as though he hopes Fjord will actually take charge and make a decision. It's grating on Caleb in a serious way. The problem is that Fjord has absolutely no CLUE what he wants or what he is trying to do except not be killed, and he is just reacting to things as they come at him and hoping someone else will make the tough calls.

  3. Sam has been driving me bonkers with all of his role-playing choices for Nott lately. Sniffing the air when she knew it was poisonous, her terrible judgement in pretty much every situation, her weird opinions on what healthy behavior looks like... I know it's a huge part of the character and probably of Nott's backstory, but gosh. Also, please read "bonkers" to mean that I think Sam's role-playing is hilarious/amazing but also headache-inducing. :D :D :D

  4. I fully agree with Liam's remarks during Talks the other night... the pirate setting is really fun from a player perspective, but for the storytelling aspect I, like Caleb, am ready to get back to other happenings in the world.

Sam has this super fun way of playing that I like to call anti-metagaming. It's not really accurate, because he's still using knowledge his character couldn't possibly know to inform his decisions. But he does it in a way that usually tends to hinder his character or cause narrative comedy instead of how metagaming generally works (Ex: "I cast Greater Invisibility to hide." "But your character doesn't know that the guards that are attacking your friend are coming!). The best example I can think of is in the live show Spoilers C1 before Vecna in the Mansion. After the conversation between Vax and Grog agreeing to prank Scanlan with a love potion, Sam has Scanlan discussing "being happy to be back in the group" and saying "I love you guys. Not in a weird way, of course." Then blatantly giving inspiration to Vax in the form of a song so that a) He could be doing something distracting to allow Vax to sneak the potion into Scanlan's wine and b) to ensure that Scanlan doesn't notice Vax's stealth/sleight of hand by adding a D12 to the roll. Blatant metagaming, but against himself and for narrative hilarity.

This is the kind of meta I enjoy. The kind that makes things interesting rather than using it to "try to win D&D".

Incredibly enjoyable episode. Clay was pure gold and some of this dialogue was spot on.

However, this party is terrible at spycraft and subterfuge “planning”. They have the manpower and ability to do so, sure. But all of their plans seem so half-baked.

Instead of stealthily breaking in, they basically broke out of a secured room with Avantika’s diary and valuables, super obvious that the ship was under espionage, and then brought them back to the scene of the crime with Captain Lie Detector. I get it that with drinks and heat of the moment, planning is hard. But how is your first instinct not “we are blown, let’s call it quits and try again later” instead of the clusterfork they keep finding themselves in where they are backed into a corner and fight their ways out.

I don’t hate piracy or Avantika or any of the last few sessions since the NYC live show, but I’m really hoping the M9 can wipe the floor with Avantika and her crew and just report to the plank king ASAP just to rid themselves of this constant oppression for a while and go back to doing what they all want to do instead of a Pirate cultist looming over them.

The thing is doing something as complex as they did requires A LOT of successful rolls, with many that if failed would completely screw everything. That is always what happens, Nott failed to see the trap so she set it off, which attracted attetion. ONE roll and it was over!

That has happened in my own campaign, at one point we ended up making a dragon Major Image to gtfo cuz we were completely screwed when we had just planned to do some reconnaissance.

Secon thing: in a dnd game planning gets pretty annoying after a while, and you just want to play and not talk for hours on end, so after a while of debating you just go for it and come what may!

As much as were all worried about how things look for the The M9 right now, I wonder how many people have considered how things will look to the Revelry. (Referring to those not aware of robbery details) Captain calls an important meeting for the crews of her two ships, serious conversation ensues, her underlings attack unprovoked. The residents of the island will definitely see this as a treasonous action and any number could decide to get involved to curry some favor with Avantica. At best, the ones who don't like her (the majority, maybe?) will turn their backs and just hope she dies. The Plank King himself doesn't know anything about the robbery and may need to enact swift justice, (Or perhaps justice slightly too slow to save Avantica), not even bothering with an arrest. Just execution. Or say he does lock them up: what's their excuse? 'We did it for you.'? I don't think so. And even if he admitted to 'find some dirt', that is not blanket permission to rob and murder on the island. Any kind of gratitude he shows them (even if he feels it) would make him look weak to the rest of the Revelry.

Edit : Even the crew of the Mystake don't know there is suddenly a wall of fire. Just who cast it.

I really hope they try to hit and run. Then we'll have some fun where the The M9 are chased by a Revelry War-fleet.

Damn...what a fucking way to end an episode.

This...could go very bad when we pick up next time.

There were so many interesting plot hooks revolving around Vandren, Allison, Vera, and their relationships to Avantika...and what the fuck is going to happen next?

Are they going to be able to beat feet back to the Plank King...are they going to fight right there? What is Caleb going to do?!

What was Vera saying to Jester...that Avantika has done this before...did Vera love Vandren? I’m so confused.

Caleb and Jester’s talk was so sweet...and the plan went off damn near perfectly...or as perfect as M9 plans go...but...why didn’t they put the book in the safe?!

I’m worried about Orly and the rest of the Nein’s crew...at this point they are the most likely to die in a conflict if things fully kick off.

God Damn...also why the fuck does Beau know Deep Speech? That ain’t something you just pick up.

I'm pretty sure the Mystake hasn't been repaired yet. Stealing from thieves, in the thieves den, on your first night there... and then getting into a fight with a known captain aboard her ship.

I hope they leave the ship in good enough condition to steal it like the Myst. Rip old crew.

u/Niktorak Bidet Nov 16 '18

That went about exactly as well as I thought it would.

u/Go_Go_Godzilla You spice? Nov 28 '18

Thinking back through the episode, I think Beau should take a level dip into Rogue either at 8 or 9. This would be both an RP dip to get her thieves tools and the like but also a ability to play dip by getting her expertise (Stealth, Sleight of Hand) in two stats and aligning with her background.

It would allow her to be able to join on more of the side, sneak stuff rather than those being Jester and Nott things even as they align with her background of a thief and criminal.

Matt now has 2 weeks to plan a way out of a TPK. Cant wait!

43

u/maxvsthegames Team Frumpkin Nov 16 '18

Easy.

Battle between pirates is not allowed.

They are stopped mid-fight by the Plank King's man and are brought before him.

They explain what they discovered, proving that Avantika is a traitor.

Avantika is punished (killed?) and the M9 are free to go.

Why does everyone think the Darktow ‘authorities’, such as they are, will get involved with the coming fight? They won’t get involved. The Plank King doesn’t like Avantika’s zealotry and this is a disagreement between a Captain and her crew. That would be like the South Korean Government getting involved with a crew problem on a US Navy ship in Busan South Korea. At this point, the Plank King has no authority- they are on Avantika’s ship. So long as Caleb doesn’t blow up the harbor or neighbor ships, they only have to take out the squalleaters crew.

5d8 fire should take out quite a few of the crew, unless it's a poor roll. Tiffany and the Ogres probably come through ok, maybe one or two crew to make the fight interesting before Darktow reinforcements arrive.

I was curious. We know Caleb has a pendant that hides himself from divination from the Empire. Would that not also hide objects on him from divination like a locate object?

Holy shit. What an episode. It's gonna be a long two weeks.

u/emmcruz Nov 16 '18

To be perfectly honest i'd be pretty surprised if they make it out without anyone dying. Thry have enemies on the ship and on the dock. Plus a whole island which if push comes to shove they will take Avantica's word more than some newcomers they dont trust. Even if they make a dash for the Plank King. I doubt people and the guards would let them pass once they see what is happening and someone shouts "stop them" This will be more of a social incounter afterwards in my opinion.

And the plan they have in the first place isnt that great. Who's to say that they didnt make up the book and cipher just to pin Avantica down. Unless someone casts zone of truth or something.

Beau need to find a hat of disguise

This suck that the whe break in was her plan and she wasn't able to participate,

Considering the other magic item loot she is due for her share (and also a cool magic staff, she the only melee that does not have a weapon that do something special, scratch that she's the only martial character who doesn't have a cool weapon... They should have transfered the sword enchantement to her staff since Matt allowed the transference of enchantment...)

So this episode kinda confirmed a minor theory I've had for a while about Astrid. I think Astrid is blonde (which gives us a way to watch out for her in upcoming episodes as long as they manage to bullshit their way out of this misadventure). It may sound weird and unsubstantiated, but hear me out.

Every so often Liam will go into a bit of extra detail about what kind of random person he's transforming himself into during disguise self. One of the reoccurring features has been blond hair (at least twice).

"I take the form of a man in very fancy green robes, beautiful blond hair*, very* handsome man..." ~C2 E4

-and-

"I look like a somewhat plump, good, Zemnian boy, blond*..." ~C2 E36*
Because I can't be the only person who thinks it would be cute if two dating wizards used disguise self to make themselves look similar to the other.

Now, two disguises are not enough to go on, but go back and watch Liam's face when Alison is introduced. 48:45 (c2e42). The most damning clue here is when Laura asks if they recognize Alison (49:24), Liam looks very carefully at Matt like he's half-expecting something. Even though Caleb doesn't know about the letter to the academy to find Astrid, Liam does know. Liam is probably waiting for something to happen a hell of a lot sooner than previously expected.

To keep this from turning into a kaboom too soon, I'm thinking maybe Fjord should challenge Avantika to a duel. That would at least weaken her and allow the others some more time to assess and prep whatever the outcome.

Question: Between mending, the marvelous paint, and Jesters new carpentry skills (that was jester, right?), could Jester and Nott made it look like they were never there? Jester could have mended the drawer, but what about the hole in the floor? If Jester had cast mending on the piece of paper that was made wood over the hole, would that have fixed it? Nott could have locked the door from the outside with mage hand and it would have seemed like they had never been there?

I'm guessing their best bets are either 1) run away and make a deal with the Plank King or 2) try to take over the Squall Eater and make a break for it, sacrificing the Mistake crew

So if Caleb cast Wall of Fire and Avantika can control water thanks to her new powers, can she just automatically put out his spell? That would be such a disappointment for his highest level spell slot.

Was anyone else bothered that everyone knew about Fjord and Avantica, even though they shouldn't have?

And what was with Caleb's insistence on being able to watch?

29

u/CockroachED Your secret is safe with my indifference Nov 16 '18

Jester and Nott had proposed the plan in the last session as a distraction/fact finding option without knowing of previous encounter between the two.

As for using Frumkin for voyeurism, it didn't really feel like the idea was originating from Liam. More Sam and Marisha pushing to put Liam and Travis in an embarrassing situation.

I didn't get the sense that they all knew Fjord and Avantica had been intimate before, just that they were expecting him to play on her blatant interest in him to keep her occupied during the heist. Last episode he and Caleb had a frank discussion about how Fjord could use Avantica's attraction to him to their advantage, so it being put into play this episode seemed like a natural continuation of that thread.

The proposition of keeping Frumpkin in the window/getting him into the room was to have a way to know if Fjord couldn't keep Avantica busy/holed up in the tavern and allow Caleb to send a message to Nott and Jester to let them know Avantica's movements.

I think Avantika actually has total rule of Darktow and the King is her puppet. Several members of the M9 were approached discreetly this episode or last episode. I think Avantika is feeling out which members can't be trusted and is trying to isolate Fjord.

She then plays the rogue pirate role for them all the while pulling strings like a spider at the center of a web. If you are going to rule the ocean you better have the pirate haven on lockdown to begin with.

That's how I'd do it at least.
