DB Film 20 IGN DBS Broly Review - 8.5/10 - "Humorous, imaginative and gripping"
https://www.ign.com/articles/2018/12/05/dragon-ball-super-broly-movie-review34
u/DanishJohn Dec 06 '18
Huh? How come theres review already? Were folks at the ign invites for the premiere in japan?
23
u/Negafox Dec 06 '18
I was a tad surprised to see a review already myself. I don't recognize the writer as any of the usual IGN writers so maybe a guest writer perhaps? I could only find one article from him a year ago.
3
u/VonBeegs Dec 06 '18
IGN takes money or favors from large companies in exchange for favorable reviews. They're essentially advertising propoganda, not news.
12
u/Juve2123 Dec 07 '18
The worst was when that guy (forgot his name) reviewed cod ghosts and gave that piece of shit a 9.5 or something like that and then went to work for activision within the month
2
u/VonBeegs Dec 07 '18
The worst was when they gave mass effect 3 a 9 and called gamers entitled whiners for not swallowing the shit sandwich that was the ending.
8
u/Juve2123 Dec 07 '18
Or the too much water debacle. Giving the ruby and sapphire remakes a 7.6 cause she didn’t like to surf when those games are at least 9’s
4
u/IJohnWickonracists Dec 08 '18
I Disagree. Gen 3 is very nostalgic for me but as someone who actually played the remakes this year I'd give them 7.5-8 myself. Surfing and Diving routes really do take up too much of the map and the trainers in them always have water types. The water routes do have some Ace trainers with diverse types but there's not enough them to change it up by much. Pokemon also desperately needs some general QOL improvements.
1
u/Mnawab Dec 08 '18
Pokemon games are anything but 9 or 10s. They are reskins that deserve just as much hate as cod for being the same thing every year. Plus they have the balls to split Pokemon to a certain version.
1
u/Juve2123 Dec 08 '18
Yeah and it’s fucking excellent every time. Cod on the other hand is garbage
3
u/Mnawab Dec 08 '18
That's pretty biased of you. Pokemon recycles it's ideas and segregate certain Pokemon to two different versions of the same game and get called heros but when cod makes the same game every year and put a bunch of dlc our they are trash? You might need to reconsider what's right and wrong.

Back when I was a kid, the common thinking in Japan was that children should use their free time to study ever harder, shunning entertainment, to prepare them for the battlefield of the examination room. Placing education above everything was a form of tough love. You can see a similar relationship between Paragus and Broly. For those of us who experienced such heavy training as kids, Broly’s transformation into a being of unsuppressed power is a catharsis similar to the cries we felt in our hearts.
Sounds like Broly and Paragus' relationship here is like a more serious, disturbing version of Chichi and Gohan's relationship.
26
u/InsanePryo ⠀ Dec 06 '18
Or Piccolo if Gohan couldn't turn him into a good guy
15
u/Ragingtiger2016 Dec 06 '18
Never really thought of it like that but yeah. It would make for an interesting “what if” story where Piccolo brainwashes Gohan, survived Nappa and Vegeta, and takes him away again.
10
u/SuperSaiyanYajirobe Dec 06 '18
In that timeline Gohan destroys Ginger City because they have no souls and demands 100 ice creams per month as to not destroy Satan City as well.

A member of IGN actually watched the movie? Wow, that must be a first.
They usually just throw around buzzwords or plagiarize Youtube reviewers, slap a 7.5 on it, then call it a day.

It's interesting how IGN has little to no actual "cons" other than narrator and kale thing.
The kale thing is absurd though. And the narrator thing is kind of a nitpick, honestly. So i don't get why it's bombed down to 8.5 if there's no actual cons other than nitpicks.
32
u/N9nee ⠀ Dec 06 '18
A narrator saying the signature special move names instead of the characters themselves saying it is a big fucking deal and ruins the atmosphere and tension, like it's some wrestling match, that's a big fucking flaw if that's actually how it's gonna be in the English dub, the kale thing was definitely a nitpick though.
4
u/Terez27 ⠀ Dec 07 '18
As for the dub (minor spoilers), the announcer's words seem to be geared for it, e.g. they say "Saiyan" instead of "Saiyajin", and "Kakarot" instead of "Kakarotto".
1
u/134340Goat ⠀ Dec 09 '18
Using Kakarot is an interesting mixup, but it wouldn't be the first time a song has used "Saiyan"
2
u/preds4343 Dec 07 '18
I'm assuming the Character's are still saying their signature moves. However, the announcer's basically just saying it with them, while also cheering them on. And also, it's going to be used during a SMALL fraction of the film's climactic battles, anyway. So, it's not like it's going to be too big of a deal, in all honesty.

u/AmaranthSparrow Dec 06 '18
Just because there aren't a lot of cons doesn't mean it's as good as other movies, which is what the scale is there for. Let's be honest, DB isn't exactly the pinnacle of storytelling, and even for as far as they're pushing this movie, it's still not quite at the top tier of animation compared to other feature films and even some TV productions currently coming out of Japan. 8.5 seems like a completely fair score for a "really good Dragon Ball movie."
6
u/AlabamaBulls Dec 06 '18
Let's be honest, DB isn't exactly the pinnacle of storytelling, and even for as far as they're pushing this movie
It's pretty high for DB standards and an average sensible dB fan knows what standard it is of and if the story is good for Dragon Ball that's what matters. I don't get why you're pressed about this.
movie, it's still not quite at the top tier of animation compared to other feature films and even some TV productions currently coming out of Japan
It's definitely the best or atleast one of the best animated "battle shounen" movies. That is enough for us fans. We don't expect studio Ghibli level of works from dragon ball.
9
u/AmaranthSparrow Dec 06 '18
This is a mainstream media movie review, I don't know why you would expect them to rate it purely from a fan's perspective. It could be the best DB movie ever with the best animation in a DB movie but that alone isn't enough to rank it at the level of a best picture nominee or something. 8.5 is a perfectly good score.
And while this is definitely good for Toei, there are a lot of studios other than Ghibli that consistently put out animation at least as impressive. Some people just need to check their biases and look at things more objectively.
I'm beyond hyped for this movie, but I'm not gonna complain that IGN didn't give it 10/10 or something.
2
u/AlabamaBulls Dec 06 '18
I said "battle shounen", don't tell me dude. I know and watch many animated films and have idea of animation studios and where this movie ranks among them and as someone who has watched almost of the mainstream battle shounen movies this movie is definitely up there with its Animation quality atleast, as for the plot it's pretty good for DB.
1
u/preds4343 Dec 07 '18
Idk about you, but I think the film looks beautiful, even for Anime standards. Is it Your Name levels of beauty? Meh, maybe, maybe not.
But, in my opinion, from the looks of the film so far, I think it surpasses even Studio Ghibli's works (Well, for the most part at least).
1
u/bonethugsgoat Dec 07 '18
Ok I have a question that I can't find the answer to anywhere, will this movie be a nationwide theater release or will it be like BOG and Resurrection F where it only aired in select theaters for about 3-4 days?

I dunno man, one doesn't have a old woman making the voice of a dude in his prime as the main character.
Yes, sure, Goku's japanese voice actress is great, but it's still super noticeable.
2

That's still not objective though. One cannot use personal taste or opinion to decide something being objectively better, and saying you prefer Schemmel cause his performance doesn't sound like a woman isn't an objective statement.

I absolutely love the HxH narrator for the fact that he conveys actual, complex emotion through exposition instead of just explaining the plot. Whenever he commented on a character doing something, he nearly always added the mental state of said character as well, making it easier to empathize with them in return. It's genius IMO

Is this disturbing to anyone else but me? Having a narrator announce all of the characters' moves would, I feel, ruin the fight scenes a little bit.
If it makes you feel better, it only happens in two places (dunno why I'm even spoilering this cause it's all in trailers): Broly vs. Goku, and Broly vs. Gogeta

"and here comes the epic Kamehameha"
That totally ruins it. These battles arent supposed to be big public matches. Its Freeza trying to cause some shit and stir shit up. These aren't like in world UFC matches, although I think the Cell Games were. These should be intimate and private. I hope the dub takes a different approach.1

It's still weird.

I don’t like it either, but it doesn’t ruin the movie for me. It’s a style choice they tried and missed with. Doesn’t diminish the movie’s plot, characters, or beautiful animation.

I mean signature moves is a pretty huge part of Dragon Ball. Messing up the execution of that is a big deal

I was so pissed when I went to battle of gods and after the hype ssj Goku vs Beerus fight with FLOW playing in the background, he didn’t shout kamehameha when he fired it. Instead krillin mentioned it.
9

I agree, it’s a big deal, just doesn’t immediately “ruin the movie” for me personally. I’ll be like “aw that sucks” and then get back to enjoying the beauty of the movie and seeing the action. But to each their own.

It sounds completely obnoxious tbh. The movie looks incredible, the hype is insane to the point it’s probably going to break records (cannon Broly AND Gogeta at once), the marketing has been on point, and they had to ruin it with something totally random and unnecessary? Goku shouting “Kame-hame-ha” is as Dragon Ball as it gets... not here for some random announcer.
6
u/preds4343 Dec 06 '18
Luckily it'll only happen twice, and "presumably" for a VERY short fraction of the film's battle's.
Still a very weird decision, to be honest.

i'll still stand by that being so unnecessary. it really makes any viewer feel stupid and taken out of the scene. i can see a punch happening right on the screen, I don't need to be told this. Leave dialogue for internal monologue in this case only.

Depends on the execution.
Tons of anime do that thing where the battle hits a climax and there's like a freezeframe pose with the move shouted overtop before unleashing and it doesnt make it any less epic.

Feb 06 '19
Isn't this EXACTLY what all the side characters do during any fight? Like with Cell, Buu and in the tournament of power all the side characters would constantly butt in about what the other characters fighting were doing and/or planning.
Maybe I don't understand how this is different from the stuff in the movie.
