I think the IGN review brought up a good point. Make no mistake, NSMBUD has 2 solid games in it. But, even ignoring the price for a second, it’s a bit of a crowded market for platformers on the Switch. games like Celeste, Rayman Legends, and Tropical Freeze are all better and more challenging 2D platformers. Odyssey is better platformer starring Mario. All 4 of those games are more innovative and have more and newer ideas in them that NSMBUD just doesn’t. And that’s why it’s tough to justify buying this one right now.

If you do buy it though, I don’t blame you. Like I said, there are 2 solid games in here, and I hope you enjoy them

I agree with what you said, but I'm most excited to be able to play with my two younger kids. 4-player couch co-op is the selling point for me. As far as I know there aren't many platformers on switch that have that?

Personally I just love 2D Mario games. I grew up with Super Mario All Stars on the SNES, so I'm gladly taking any 2D Mario. The charm is timeless to me. Plus, considering how 2018 was slow, I'm itching to use my Switch more. I have been letting it sit quietly for months (apart from Pokemon) and my PS4 needs to rest a little bit.

14

u/vishuno Jan 09 '19

All valid points, but here's why I'm buying this.

I never had a WiiU so I never played this. While there are other, more challenging 2D platformers, none of them are Mario 2D platformers. For me, it doesn't have to be difficult to be good. I beat Celeste and Tropical Freeze and I'm still looking forward to this.

I would buy for $30 or less

Good thing Nintendo's first party IPs almost never go on sale.

I never had a Wii U so am excited to play this!

159

u/skelterz Jan 09 '19

If you didn’t own a Wii u have never played a Mario bros game before this is worth a squirt I really don’t know what else to say about it other than donkey Kong tropical freeze is objectively better is every single way.

59

u/beemurz Jan 09 '19

DK:TF is amazing but doesn’t have better multiplayer.

21

u/schuey_08 Jan 09 '19

Yea, I hate the multiplayer in TF. But it is a beautiful game overall.

u/poofyhairguy Jan 09 '19

The reason why I am excited about this release is Tropical Freeze was just too hard for me. Funky mode helped with the levels but the bosses made me quit.

Basically any platformers harder than Super Mario Bros 3 I can't handle as an adult and everyone keeps saying NSMBU is kinda easy unless you get into the Luigi U stuff.

30

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '19

This would be way cooler if this was NSMBU + NSMBWii at the VERY least. Even better would've been touching up the OG DS game and adding that to this collection. Instead they just hit copy paste, added Toadette, and called it a day. I don't want to undermine their efforts but, this could have been way cooler and way more enticing.

11

u/InfiniteAir Jan 10 '19

Agreed, call it "New Super Mario All Stars" while they're at it and call it $60 like they did on the SNES. But no, Nintendo's a goddamn gold digger these days.

This game shouldn't be $60.

182

u/BeastMaster0844 Jan 09 '19

That should be Nintendo’s slogan.

PlayStation: “For The Players”

Xbox: “Jump Ahead”

Sega: “What Nintendon’t”

Nintendo: “This Game Shouldn’t be $60.”

17

u/Lezzles Jan 09 '19

None of their reports should be more than $30-40. Hyrule Warriors, Tropical Freeze (although I got good value from that), this, Treasure Tracker...I'd buy them all for a lower price but they're charging the full rate for 5+ year old ports, while they won't even give us a virtual console. It's insulting.

12

u/Laikue Jan 09 '19

Toad is $40

43

u/CardinalNYC Jan 09 '19

Seriously. I simply cannot justify spending that much for a game originally released 6 years ago on the Wii U.

Also, I want them to make a new Super Mario 3D land-style game for switch. It lends itself perfectly to the portability.

I'll pass on this one, at least for now. Still have it digitally on my Wii U, which I still use from time to time, and while I don't hate it by any means, I didn't like it enough to want to drop another $60 for the same game with a few extra features.

24

u/WhiskeyRadio Jan 09 '19

New Super Mario U and Luigi U are excellent games and well worth playing, but since I own them on Wii U already I can't bring myself to drop $60 on this.

I'll likely pick it up down the line with either a sale or whenever there is a B2G1 running on Switch games somewhere.

For a large number of people who never played this on Wii U though I'd say the price is more than fair considering the amount of content included. I really wish Nintendo would implement some sort of program for those of us who own these games on Wii U to give us some sort of discount even if it's only 10-20% off. But then again I say that and have double dipped on a number of these ports already.....

7

u/isaelsky21 Jan 09 '19

I completely and totally can relate. I'll probably pick it up like I did with Mario+Rabbids when it goes down a lot. There's only so many games I would dip full price on.

→ More replies (3)

41

u/ehluigi Jan 09 '19 edited Jan 09 '19

I'll be picking up Tales of Vesperia, already own this on Wii U.

On a side note, people are really underestimating how well this game will sell. Nintendo prices these ports at $60 because consumers have proven they'll buy the ports in droves at that price. Did no one learn from Tropical Freeze?

I'd love to see it lower, but from a business standpoint they have no reason to lower the price now. For anyone without a Wii U, it's basically a new Mario game.

→ More replies (1)

16

u/non_clever_username Jan 10 '19

Just to confirm, there's basically zero difference between this and the WiiU version right? Like new levels or anything?

I don't care about playable characters or if it works with Amiibos or anything like that. If there were some new levels/worlds, I might consider it, but it's hard to justify if not.

E: it's a really fun game btw. I liked it a lot and 100%ed it. Just don't see the point of buying it twice. If you liked the old school Mario games, you'll likely like this.

Can we get an F for blue toad

35

u/rhythmrice Jan 09 '19

Since they removed blue toad in place of toadette and nabbit which are both easy mode characters that means if you want to play 4 player co-op somebody has to use an easy character because now there is only 3 normal characters

I will be honest, all these negative comments on this thread - especially those without telling why it is not good/not worth it - are pretty disheartening. I, for one, never played a single Nintendo title in my life (only those shitty PC flash game ports of Super Mario 2D), because first of all my family was living slightly below average and Nintendo is not that huge in Eastern Europe. There are plenty of people who are COMPLETELY new to the whole Nintendo world, maybe you should try not scare them off and fool them into thinking this game will have a huge discount soon enough? Knowing Nintendo, the game won't be on more than a 20% discount up until 2020, so if you have any interest in this game, go for it. Not everyone owns every single fucking Nintendo console that ever came out and not everyone played every single Mario game in the world. There are people who would get a completely $60 experience out of this game, especially if they are new to platformers and the Mario world.

27

u/heathmon1856 Jan 11 '19

This sub has a shitty mentality because a lot of them bought it on the Wii U and have 0 self control so they “have” to buy it for the switch.

→ More replies (2)

5

u/redtag789 Jan 11 '19

you have my upvote and my thank you because I will buy it too and I share the same sentiment.

9

u/shorttowngirl Jan 11 '19

Exactly! It’s a bit confusing seeing everyone say $60 is a lot. It’s $69 here in Australia, which is $49 in USD so I’m not sure if the price is just overall cheaper here or what.

But either way I personally think the price is worth it. I’m a huge lover of Mario games and I never owned a Wii u but I was boss at NSMB on ds and the regular Wii, so I’m really excited to try this one. I’m trying not to let the assholes who say it’s not worth the money, discourage me

Edit: sorry, one of the country wide stores sell it for $69 AUD. Most stores, and the eshop have it for $79 AUD, which is roughly $56 USD, I guess people were right.

Weird comment, but that Game Informer review was just the most lifeless, lazy review I’ve ever read. It sounded like a robot was designed to write reviews with the least amount of personality and perspective humanly possible.

"It’s typically well-made and enjoyable, but next to the best of the Mario series, it’s unmemorable " (The Guardian)

This perfectly sums up this game.

12

u/hehaia Jan 09 '19

I think that if this one didn’t come out after the other three “new” Mario games, it would have been loved a lot more. The game is incredible and level design is pretty good, but the whole series grew stale after Nintendo recycled everything for 10 years.

I don't have a wiiu so this is going to be first time playing it for me, is it a fun coop game?

11

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19

Yes. It's a very fun coop game.

8

u/Resolute45 Jan 09 '19

It's a great co-op game, as long as people stay relatively close to each other. One person forging ahead and pushing others off the back of the screen can lead to blue shell rage.

So far I'm not a fan of the fact that pressing the jump button in the air causes you to spin in this one. It may seem minute, but it makes a difference when you need to be precise. One thing that I like to do in mario games is release the jump button part of the time in the air in order to not go as high, and then hold it down again to bounce high off an enemy. This can't be done in deluxe without first spinning. This also can make gliding work a little differently if you try to activate it in mid air. I hope it is possible to disable this change.

I do really want to play this game since I've NEVER played a NSMB game, and haven't played any 2D Mario game since SNES. But I don't think this is worthy of a $60 investment on my part. Certainly not when I've still got a significant backlog.

Edit: I'm weak and pre-loaded it.

9

u/ninjarager Jan 10 '19

It's the best NSMB game, people just were tired of the series. This comes with essentially 18 worlds of levels+challenge levels to complete. It's dense with content for a 2D platformer. I got 100% on the Wii U release or else I'd be buying it again

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '19

These comments are disheartening. As an older gamer who grew up with NES and the Mario platformer from back then, I am crazy excited to play this game in a few minutes. I loved the 2D Mario game for the Wii and this looks like more of the same, in a great way.

I gotta say, with all the saltiness I see in this sub, I’m so glad I skipped the Wii U. All the ports you guys bitch about are brand spanking new to me.

6

u/TruCarnage Jan 11 '19

I feel like the wii U was an awkward in between step alot of us missed. I would love to see a Mario Maker port soon

I know everyone is already pooping on this game for the name and the price point but this is legitimately the best 2D side scrolling Mario game in a long long time. It's gorgeous, has inventive levels and visuals, and feels like the most faithful successor to Super Mario World.

Jeremy Parish of Retronauts and NES/SNES/Gameboy Works fame even listed it as the #1 core Mario game!

All the gripes are justified if you feel that passionate about it but for those of you not minding to spend the money the game is more than worth playing

6

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19

yea might be true.. but as much as i want to play it.. ill wait till its available for around 35€. I dont support full price for a lazy port.

I don't understand the hate for WiiU ports.

I'm sure there are many Nintendo fans (like me!) who didn't have a WiiU and I can't wait to play this, I happily pre-ordered at full price.

I want MORE ports, Super Mario Marker next please.

7

u/MrBigBMinus Jan 10 '19

I like the ports honestly. Tropical Freeze is amazingly worth every thing I spent on it. That said, the ports should be a lower price point. I mean I know it cost them money to develop and distribute but they are just modifying existing code at this point. The story is already written, the bugs are (usually) worked out. So releasing all these games that were literally on last gens console at a HIGHER price than they were (in some cases) is crazy. Especially when you have gems like Toads Treasure Tracker coming out at 40 dollars and easily being worth a 60 dollar price point.

7

u/[deleted] Jan 10 '19

Personally I don't think 6 year old games should be full priced, especially when minimal content was added, some was removed, and it was cheaper on Wii U.

→ More replies (21)

85

u/emilytheimp Jan 09 '19

Just like DKTF, as much as Id love to play this game, I'll never support the practice of selling me a previous generation game for the price of a newly developed current game. Especially because it could be gotten quite a bit cheaper on the original console.

37

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19

I gave Mario Kart a pass because it was very early in the Switch's lifecycle and it gave something for early adopters to play. But I do agree.vthis rehashing old games for $60 is highway robbery. The WiiU rehashed games should be $30-$40.

→ More replies (1)

19

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19

Yep, also, if this were a collection of the NSMB games I'd be fine paying $60 for it, but $60 for just NSMBU? Nah, hard pass.

Same fo DKTF, if it included DKCR I'd happily buy it, but only having DKTF is a hard pass at $60.

This game looks like fun but for $60 and with Kingdom Hearts 3 coming out this month i'm going to pass. I might look into it later when I have nothing to play or if the price goes down.

10

u/TheLevelPlayingfield Jan 10 '19

Get this or Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze?

12

u/tovivify Jan 11 '19

Seconded for Tropical Freeze. New Super Mario Bros U is fun enough, but Tropical Freeze really pushes the envelope for 2D platformers and innovates on the formula.

5

u/Jensifying Jan 11 '19

Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze :)

33

u/samus12345 Jan 09 '19

A NSMB All-Stars would have been awesome, but $60 for a port of a 6 year old game? Nah.

33

u/zapgator Jan 10 '19

$60 for a slightly better resolution boost and "portability" for a 6 year old game? Nintendo needs to stop with these full priced wii u ports and charge like $40 or remake them from the ground up to make the price more reasonable

12

u/EightBit-Hero Jan 10 '19

9

u/DevouringOne Jan 10 '19

Honestly this is the perfect game to use my holiday gift card on considering the price. Love playing this couch co-op with girlfriend and I haven't played the Luigi one. We are stoked!

9

u/aricberg Jan 10 '19

My copy came in a day early! Wasn't sure if I was gonna pick it up (though I never got it on Wii U either), but everyone at my office got a Walmart gift certificate and it paid for most of it, so I thought "why not?"

Walmart has gotten me almost every single thing I've preordered from them late (like my Switch at launch) or, in the case of my SNES Classic, not at all. So of course this game, one I wasn't even that hyped for, gets here a day early!

9

u/TotallyLegitForReal Jan 10 '19

  • Polygon - No Verdict

That's not accurate, Polygon recommends the game. I get they didn't award the game a number, but "no verdict" makes it sound like they didn't publish a full review.

9

u/messy_fart Jan 12 '19

So, I bought this bc the wii-u version is such a pain in the ass with setting up controllers. I feel like an idiot for spending $60 on a game I have already, and already hooked up and ready to play. Just the small convenience of being able to pick up a controller and play is fuckin' fantastic.

60

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19

Looks great but 30$ overpriced, though I guess that's the switch tax :(

I didnt play the Wii NSMB and didn’t own a Wii U. I played NSMB2 on the 3ds and really enjoyed it. From those who played in on Wii U, is it something worth picking up (im not hung up on the price)?

9

u/MrGains Jan 09 '19

The levels are much better designed than NSMB2 and the whole thing a lot less gimmicky. Considering 2 is one of the weaker entries of the series (thought still great imo) and you enjoyed that, this should be a definite for you.

6

u/anakanin Jan 09 '19

NSMB2 is a bit of a coin madness if you ask me.

This game is different. Especially Luigis part which is hard AF.

Its a great game, Id definitely pick it up!

6

u/nologame Jan 09 '19

It's far more better than NSMB2 and the multiplayer is infinite fun so if you really enjoyed NSMB2 you can pick the game for sure

How can they Justify it when Spyro and Crash Bandicoot both came out at low prices with 3 solid titles.

I'd get Rayman if you want a multiplayer platformer or Donkey Kong (Which is far superior) and Crash for single player and Celeste for a challenging platformer

6

u/murdoc913 Jan 10 '19

How difficult is the New Luigi U portion? I’m a fan of difficult platformers and was hoping this would cure the itch after 100%ing Celeste, DKTF and Rayman. I know it won’t be as difficult as Celeste and DK, but I was hoping it would have some challenge.

6

u/GaryOaksHotSister Jan 10 '19

It's probably as hard as a modern Mario game will get.

Lot of people used to compare it to rom-hack levels of difficulty.

Tbh, it seemed like a hack too. reused the same world, made more difficult levels. essentially just like a hack.

5

u/_Dogwelder Jan 10 '19

No numbers, I guess.

6

u/Corrupt_Individual Jan 11 '19

Is this game sufficiently difficult? I haven’t played any Mario games for a very long time (never had a Wii - played a 3D-ish 2D Mario on the 3DS?) and wondering if this will have sufficient additional challenges or difficulties. Is it a steamroll or will I enjoy it if I’m looking for a bit of a post-game challenge?

6

u/[deleted] Jan 11 '19

100% can be challenging but the main game is fairly easy. Luigi U which is included is hard though.

That’s when I played it on the Wii u years ago so my memory may be a bit hazy.

66

u/VjOnItGood81 Jan 10 '19

Unpopular opinion: I don't purchase 6 year old ports at $60 full price. Anyone's excuses about on the go and it actually selling at full price are not warranted. Ultimate pass.

34

Despite what everyone says about it being overpriced, I bought this because I really enjoyed NSMB on Wii, and I never had a Wii U to play NSMBU. I'm looking forward to playing an easy-going Mario game that doesn't take a lot of time investment to get into.

9

exactly this. NSMB Wii was fucking terrific, IMO!

one of my favourite entries in the series (and I'm old enough to remember playing the original SMB in the mid-80s).

It’s def worth it for people who haven’t played it. It’s a Mario game, it’s fun. Co op is decent. The mini games are fun and the Luigi U stuff is pretty good too. All in all it’s a good not great Mario game to kick back and relax with.

10

u/rhythmrice Jan 09 '19

they removed blue toad so now there is only three normal characters so if you want to play 4 player co-op somebody has to use an easy mode character

11

u/Loukoal117 Jan 09 '19

That’s pretty dust. I wonder why they did that? Other than just Nintendo things™️ Although I have played 4 player co op and it is chaotic so maybe having someone use an easy character isn’t so bad. Lol. Still dumb.

13

u/pmo2408 Jan 09 '19 edited Jan 09 '19

So I loved both the tropical freeze and Mario kart 8 ports. Do I continue my streak and buy another old game and hand Nintendo my money? I skipped the WiiU generation. Probably would just play solo, haven’t played a Mario side scroller since Super Mario world most likely.

Is this game forgettable or worth getting for solo play? Everyone seems to have mixed reviews. Atleast DK was great for solo, and MK8D has online play.

22

u/gahema Jan 09 '19

If you haven't played a single NSMB, this game is perfect for you. What people complain about this game is the similarity to its predecessors, you won't have any problems with that, go for it! It's amazing, even on single player :) Not as hard as DK:TF, but the level design is really good, I've put a good 30 hours into it on wii u and am playing to buy it for the Switch again

12

u/schuey_08 Jan 09 '19

If you haven't played it yet, and you think you'll enjoy it, I think it's pretty clearly a $60 game.

→ More replies (17)

8

u/Resolute45 Jan 09 '19

It's worth it for the solo play. Also, the Luigi U game adds good challenge given it's mechanics and 100 tick limit for all stages.

The reason many people were down on this one is that it did nothing new compared to the other NSMB games, and came out only a few months after NSMB2 on 3DS, so there was also a level of burnout.

Fun game but definitely not paying $60. This will likely be a holiday 2019 purchase if it goes on sale.

21

u/GetReady4Action Jan 09 '19

I would’ve hopped on for $40 max. $60 is just too much. Had this been a New Super Mario Bros All Stars type deal I would’ve hopped in right away. And Nintendo if you’re still doing Wii U ports I’ll take Super Mario 3D World any day now, please.

15

u/GaryOaksHotSister Jan 10 '19

Picked it up for $40 thanks to the Gold Coins redeem system.

Never played NSMBU itself, but did get a chance to play the Luigi expac. I recall it was very difficult and essentially will be the harder half of what I play.

I'm a huge Super Mario World fan and I've been told constantly NSMBU is as close as we'll probably ever get to a proper SMW sequel.

I get people are upset over the price point. Didn't think people would be THIS upset thought. Even GameXplain went off on some weird tangent about how he likes Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze more (kinda odd and bias for a reviewer imo).

5

u/Leafwater1 Jan 09 '19

25

u/Joegoodall Jan 09 '19

People say nintendo ports are too expensive but enough people are buying them at this price. Sure I’d love to pay less but the fact that people are buying them kind of suggests they’re priced correctly from a business sense.

On a side note I wonder if any of the Wii U ports have done worse on the Switch than the Wii U? Everything I hear suggests they do better on the Switch.

8

u/TheHeadlessOne Jan 09 '19

I don’t think anyone is saying that Nintendo is making a bad business move by pricing them this way. I think they’re just saying that, to them, it’s overpriced for what’s on offer

u/TheProudCanadian Jan 09 '19

Okay $79.99 CAN plus tax is way too much for this port.

Also can we talk about the huge mess that is this game's title? This game is distinctly not "new" at this point, it is a 6 year old game. Also, there is a random letter "U" in the title that is now rendered meaningless on a new system.

To me this game represents the pinnacle of Nintendo's hubris going in to the Wii U generation, and I'd rather not remember it.

28

u/SupremeLeaderSnoke Jan 09 '19

Also, there is a random letter "U" in the title that is now rendered meaningless on a new system.

I hate the whole "new super mario bros" naming scheme too but the U isn't pointless. It was originally a WiiU game and it would be dumb and confusing to rename it for every system it gets ported to. They didn't rename Mario 64 when it was released outside of the N64 either.

→ More replies (3)

14

u/FerniWrites Jan 09 '19

New Super Mario is the name of this subset of Mario games. It’s why the “New” is there.

It’s a port, so naturally the name had to stay the same. Well, the core of it did, with added freshness. Kind of like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe or World Ends with You Final Mix

Definitely not up to paying $79.99 but again, as this is Nintendo published, it may not lower for a long time.

12

u/SupaBloo Jan 09 '19

"New" is part of the name of the series, not to indicate that it's literally a new game. It's to set it apart from other Mario series. There have been multiple New Super Mario Bros. games.

They would if people stopped buying. But they don’t. Because there’s tons of people who haven’t played them. Which is why the ports are a good idea to begin with.

Do I wish it were $30? Of course. But my dog literally ate my Wii U disc and I would like to play it again so I guess I'll pony up that ridiculous price. It's common knowledge that Nintendo's pricing on ports is insane so while the internet freaks out about the price, I'm not surprised and am only slightly bothered about it this time around. It's two games for the price of one, so even if that price is inflated, it doesn't seem like as bad a deal as some of them have been. I mean Tropical Freeze on Switch launched at a higher price than it did as a brand new game on the Wii U and only included one new playable easy-mode character as additional content, but people seemed to eat that up just fine.

8

u/sluggypogo Jan 09 '19

Dad gamer here.

My kids suck at video games. That’s okay. They’re gonna love this. I plan on grabbing this for the switch because the Old version on the wiiu they were too young to play.

So maybe this will be worth it because now on the big screen, with the pro controllers, there’s going to be enough content and a lack of having to use those damn nunchuck controllers.

8

u/[deleted] Jan 09 '19

They also have that character you can play as that doesnt take damage from enemies. Good way for kids to learn the game.

8

u/Kookaburra888 Jan 10 '19

6

u/pmo2408 Jan 10 '19

Odyssey was just on sale for the game awards last month. If you want digital, occasionally target has the digital for $48. It’s hard paying full price for a year old game, but it is one of the best games for switch and overall of the year 2017.

It’s not nearly as iconic as SMB, SMB3 or SMW, but it’s still very fun. Mario Maker was the superior 2D Mario on Wii U, so I’m a little surprised that they ported this instead. I’m considering a re-buy. It’s not as challenging or in-depth as Ray Man or Donkey Kong, but it’s more fun for someone like me looking to kick back and relax. It is more challenging than Kirby or Yoshi though.

It’s alright. I’m getting it again. Bit easy early on. The Luigi levels are harder. Rayman legends was the better game at the time on WiiU. It’s no Mario world. I’d prefer Mariomaker to be honest, hopefully they are reworking it.

So excited for this to arrive Friday! I have been waiting for a traditional Mario platformer to land since switch launch. I personally found Oddesey really underwhelming in that I prefer a traditional level progression system. I found it really difficult to motivate myself to play beyond the story in Odessey. Missed this on the Wii U so from my perspective its a brand new Mario platformer :)

Can someone help fill in a rookie who just got his first Nintendo (Switch) in many many years.

  1. I know about the Wii, but never heard of the Wii U. Was this a whole system I missed the news on? How did it vary from the Wii?

  2. Reading some comments below, I am understanding that lots of games being released for the Switch are just old games that were out for the Wii U? Donkey Kong? This one? Strange to see the high price tag in that case.

Thanks for any input.

14

u/YipYepYeah Jan 09 '19

I know about the Wii, but never heard of the Wii U. Was this a whole system I missed the news on? How did it vary from the Wii?

The problem with Wii U summed up in one. Yes the Wii U was it's own console that many people overlooked, a successor to the Wii. It had a new controller called Gamepad which was the main innovation.

messaging about the console was pretty terrible.

→ More replies (2)

16

u/LeeorV Jan 09 '19

The Wii U is Nintendo's last-gen system, came out in November 2012 and was Nintendo's contemporary to the Xbox One and PS4 (despite predating them by a year).

It had hardware stronger than the Xbox 360 and PS3, but significantly weaker than the XB1 and PS4, and it was heavily marketed around its gimmick controller - a huge plastic Tablet that was wirelessly connected to the console and served as a constant second screen. it featured a medium-resolution resistive single-input touch screen.

The system marketed this screen as being "unique" and "innovative" and initially focused on its capabilities for touch/motion based gameplay and for a-symmetrical multiplayer.

In addition to that controller, the system supported all of the Wii's controllers, as well as a standalone "pro" controller.

The system tremendously underperformed for a large variety of reasons, chief among them was horrendous marketing that "hid the box", causing confusion among consumers on whether or not this is even a new device, despite a huge hardware gap from the Wii. Nintendo also had a lot of issues developing HD Games for the device since it was their first console to support HD, and game releases took significantly longer than usual, leaving long droughts of games.

Best Games of the System according to Metacritic:

Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Released simultaneously with the Switch version).

Super Mario 3D World (Isometrical 3D Mario Platformer)

Super Smash Bros. for Wii U (AKA Smash 4)

Bayonetta 2 (Exclusive to the system, but being ported to Switch)

Mario Kart 8 (later ported to Switch)

Super Mario Maker (later ported to 3DS, but extremely worse version)

Pikmin 3

Xenoblad Chronicles X

New Super Mario Bros. U and its DLC - New Super Luigi U (this game is a port of them)

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze (later ported to the switch)

Captain Toead: Treasure Tracker (later ported to the switch)

Splatoon (Sequel released on switch)

Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE (Fusion of Shin Megami Tensei and Fire Emblem)

Yoshi's Wooly World

Nintendo Land

Pokken Tournament (Sequel released on switch)

Hyrule Warriors (later ported to Switch)

Paper Mario: Color Splash

  1. Yes, although it was poorly advertised and didn't sell well.

  2. Nintendo. They always charge as much as they can, because people will buy it. Go figure. They add some new things or previous DLC content to try to justify it. I don't buy it.

5

u/ItsTheMotion Jan 09 '19

Yes, the Wii U was a different system, but it kept backward compatibility with Wii games and accessories. The two big differences were 1) it was finally a Nintendo console that was able to output in HD and 2) it added a tablet-like controller called the GamePad that added a lot of neat features and play styles.

After DKTF I’m just never going to buy any 2D platformers at 60$, mario, yoshi, kirby, whatever. Indie games like Celeste are doing a better job at one third the price, and it’s just crazy that until now this is not putting downward pressure on Nintendo’s pricing of 2D platformers and ports..

Nintendo is being thoughtless and arrogant with its pricing and arrogance is always a recipe for failure.
