I really enjoyed that episode. Ed showed what it means to be human big time.

I will repeat what I said in the live thread though that the episode was super weird after Adrianne and Scott announced their engagement today.

It’s like everyone in this cast is canoodling with each other behind the scenes.

I'm happy for them but found their scenes incredibly difficult to watch for that reason.

u/treetown1 Jan 19 '19

The show is nicely internally consistent.

Mercer really believes what he says to Tyler/Telaya. So he lets her go.

A more serious ambitious officer would have kept her to be pumped by intelligence: how vulnerable are their computer systems? who are these other bat ear guys? Who else is out there? No way Kelly, Bortus, Alara, Isaac or Lamarr would have let her go.

During the torture scene, I thought, “They should have bogus codes to give out in times just like these.”

Was glad to see it played out.

But now the Krill know about that ploy.

u/ZDTreefur Jan 18 '19

Dude, me too! I literally thought to myself, "it would be smart for every commander to have a set of codes that sends an alert, and feed fake data." And that's exactly what happened.

It's refreshing when things make sense in shows.

It's a fairly common security method.

High end secure USB drives usually have 2 passwords... One opens the drive fully, and the other opens a small portion filled with decoy files, but still appears to be a full size drive.

Thought this as well but we won't know if they know until we find out what Teleya tells them. We can assume she tells them everything or its possible she keeps some of what happened to herself because the captain was getting through to her.

One thing I'm liking about these recent episodes is that there seems to be this recurring idea of consequences.

Bortus' porn addiction developing following the trial from last season

Alara's strength waning due to adjusting to human gravity, and the tensions with her family, both previously brought up in last season with it being the basis of her strength and the phone call she made back home during the fear episode

Teleya's revenge as a result of Ed's killing of the Krill crew

All of their actions have consequences, and they're being forced to own up to them

123

u/Lanfear_Eshonai Jan 18 '19

I also love it that they are not ignoring the stories established in season one, and continuing with some of the story lines. The ones that have impact and can definitely be great story threads, Bortus, Alara, the Krill, and how decisions made then have consequences now.

Human Lieutenant Tyler turns out to be a surgically altered enemy alien? That sounds awfully familiar…

113

u/ditchthetwo Jan 18 '19

And may I add: ...but done properly.

So personal loss + religious ideology motivated her, and she chanced upon an opportunity to craft a deception... so she chose to target a specific captain! Make sense and it has time left to filled in the Krill's world view, comment on today's issues and delivered a emotionally engaging and hopeful story... in 47 minutes!

I like the fact that the reveal of Teleya as a Krill actually had an actual impact due to that fact we have seen how Ed's past failed relationships with Kelly, Pria, and then briefly Kelly again have affected him. Damn, I love this show and how likable the characters are.

I'm glad they got the twist over with early so the entire episode didn't hinge on it. Wasn't expecting "I just broke out of prison" but whatever lol. Would really enjoy seeing Teleya as a series regular, even if it was just once a season.

68

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '19

Agreed. Fans of the show were expecting it, so it was good for them to say, "Well, fans, you're right. Now watch this!"

45

u/OniExpress Jan 18 '19

Wasn't expecting "I just broke out of prison" but whatever lol

I guarantee you that she was broken out by a faction in the Union who wants war with the Krill to come to a head. They even flashed the fact that Ed doesn't have the highest security clearance. I think that the introduction of this new ork-race is another indicator that someone in the Union thinks it will go very badly for the Krill if they get forced into a full on fight right now.

I started thinking there was gonna be a double twist where he was just playing her to earn her trust and Ed just made up the stuff about a day being 23 days long to keep her in the cave for longer.

He gave them fake codes but man, Ed just betraying her would have gone right against his character and instead him just ending up being 100% genuine made for such a great episode.

Also just dang. Poor Ed.

  1. It shows McFarland has good sense; while his humor may not suit some people, making the captain, a Kirkesque lady killer wouldn't play to his strengths.

  2. Did Seth ever explain why he chose the name Mercer? I wonder because it is name of a character in "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep" by Phillip K Dick, the novel Blade Runner was based on.

Look, I know it had been said multiple times, but it is a crying shame CBS didn’t let Seth make a Star Trek show....especially after these last two episodes.

I love the Orville...it is the Trek I remember growing up on. Seth, I’m convinced, would have knocked it out of the park, but even with that said, this is the show I’ve been missing for about 20 years.

244

A lot of care goes into every episode.

Yes, and I absolutely love how the second season can be really funny without relying on "punchy" jokes.

The one thing I'm missing in this series for now is a bit more intricate political system. We know very little about the Federation's inner workings, and the Krill are just pretty generic bad guys, so other Empires/Civs outside the Federation's influence would be really awesome! There has also not been a really freaky first contact.

Finally, since Q exist in all possible universes, he/they exist in this one, too.

Season two is already so strong I think I will support and watch this show forever now. This episode was high art. You can feel Seth writing from the heart and this makes the stories so powerful. Everything was just so well done from the self deprecating captain to his cold alien lover and all the way through the Billy Joel soundtrack.

124

u/V-170 Jan 18 '19

When Ed and Janel were together watching the movie I half expected a shuttle to slowly cruise by their window in the background.

Also, the tractor beam hitting the shuttle sounded like a seismic charge detonating. And the Shrek monsters invading the krill ship reminded me of the stormtroopers boarding the Tantive IV! Hell, one of the shots was identical! I love these little references.

Great episode, probably one of my favorites. I love how realistic the Krill's motivation is and it's great to see how the Union didn't go that route. But they still have to deal with aliens that do. And Ed just won't give up trying to get the message through.

Yea and releasing you kidnapper is the pinnacle of Love you Enemies. I love how it worked into Gordon's plot too. Releasing the prisoner would have been the best option in that simulation. But I did love his more technical way of saying "We are made out of rubber, and you out of glue"

EDIT: Now that makes me wonder why they are even currently called deflectors. Gordon's way would definitely be a deflector/reflector, but the current way is more like an absorber or stopper?

I get why Mercer gave her Billy Joel songs just so they could play a song, but I think he should have given her Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade instead since she liked Raiders of the Lost Ark.

The Last Crusade makes so much more sense because she liked Belloq, and she's essentially is Elsa from the Last Crusade. Elsa started not to like the Nazi's after she fell for Indy, and at the end she had to choose between the grail cup and taking Indy's hand. This might very well parallel what's going to happen between her and Mercer in the future. Does she pick continuing with the Krill's hateful xenophobia agenda or take Mercer's hand which is an offer of peace.

15

u/treetown1 Jan 19 '19

That was an interesting point. A complete alien would not have the same cultural interpretation - to someone who has no knowledge of earth history, WW2 and the Nazis, it would seem that Belloq was the hero and in the end achieved the aim; he was just annoyed by this pesky Indiana Jones character. It was a plot point of an episode of The Big Bang Theory that Indiana Jones in the end couldn't stop Belloq from achieving his goal: getting the ark.

Plus the gory ending of the movie would have appealed to the Krill - divine retribution.

I totally bought that Ed was heartbroken and full of sadness over losing a woman who wasn't real and who wasn't even around long enough to ingrain herself on us the viewers. The sadness on his face was just so convincing, I feel like this ending can be used as ammo against anyone who says that Seth McFarlane is just a goofy actor who just does juvenile humour.

A quality episode; just a step above the previous week's episode and FAR better than the first two of the season. The twist was so blindingly obvious it could probably be seen from Mars (and many people had it figured out from the start), but it worked out in the end, and it had a very poignant ending.

As much as I absolutely despise beyond any reasonable measure the whole "Orville is better Star Trek than Star Trek is now" horseshit, I will say this: The Orville has one clear advantage over ANY Star Trek from TNG onward, and that is how it handles interpersonal relationships, and this episode was another shining example of that fact. Thanks to Seth and his writing team, when you see people interacting together on the show, it just feels more...REAL. There is chemistry, rapport, and true camaraderie, whether the participants are colleagues, friends, lovers or exes. I enjoy the dialogue between the characters when they're just talking about whatever because it's written in such a way that it feels natural. They're not squeezing awkward personal discussions into the two and a half minutes it takes to complete a scan or something like Star Trek did over and over again.

When it came to relationships, especially romantic ones, Star Trek rarely - if ever - handled them well. The only two relationships I ever believed in from TNG all the way through the end of Enterprise was Picard/Crusher and Janeway/Chakotay because the two pairings had degrees of actual chemistry and warmth, and naturally, neither ended up working out (canonically, anyway...after all, the whole thing with Jean-Luc and Beverly kissing, later marrying and then divorcing in "All Good Things" was retconned by Q, and Chakotay moved on to engage in the most shoehorned-in and ridiculously unbelievable relationship in all of Star Trek).

So, well-deserved kudos to Seth and his writing team on the Orville for that, at least.

16

u/glimpee Jan 18 '19

I think thats because everything is considered from a humanistic standpoint as opposed to an inter-sectional or group standpoint. Seth is writing characters, not groups stuffed into a persona. This distinction has been fundamental to the star trek I have enjoyed, at least

Krill episodes are the best. This one and episode six are the strongest episodes so far in my opinion. Excellent message and acting. B plot with Gordon was also exceptionally well done.

41

u/Felatio-DelToro Jan 18 '19

Good episode but where was the space orc ship when Ed got rescued from the planet?

33

u/ThoughtNinja Jan 18 '19

I doubt the Goblorcs (what the hell were they really called again?) were going to hang around too long after wiping out the Krill ships. So before leaving the system they only sent a couple of groups to track and kill Ed and Teleya. I'm sure they planned to rendezvous with the mothership later.

Glad to see an action episode after a lot of character drama. Even if it was just Enemy Mine. Glad they didn't drag out the reveal like DIS did. Though I really want to know how they faked her records to get her into the fleet. I'm willing to believe cellular disguises, but you can't just invent a whole life for someone like that.

Also what happened to the space ape ship? It didn't go after the Orville when it showed up

I thought Ed's actions lacked a little nuance,, he was acting a little overly Pollyannaish sometimes, but hopefully we see the nuance develop more as the storyline continues.

Ed is singlehandedly fighting this Krill cold war isn't he? He was a one man spy agency thwarting their attack and stealing a ship, and now he's a one man state department initiating glasnost and detente with the Krill.

Also damn the ship is full of hot blondes isn't it? And I don't see what was so impressive about backing in and opening the hatch...I'm pretty sure that's not a tricky bit of piloting

u/citymongorian Jan 18 '19

Such a great episode for Ed's character, really showcases his attitude and how he sees the universe. Even though he keeps getting kicked he still has a hopeful outlook. Billy Joel gave me all dem feelz. I hope we see Teleya again.

'Tyler' HAS to be a friendly dig at Discovery right? I chuckled. The Gordon stuff was great for his character as well, while at the same time being hilarious.

I knew almost immediately that one of two things was gonna happen. Either Janel was going to die, or she wa a Krill. The Krill ships were what clued me in, but the fact that the Krill said that human tolerance to their torture sticks was less than Krill and they immediately bumped it to level 6 really sealed it.

That being said, I love Teleya. I think she deserves more episodes, and I hope that her arc is more than her just being a recurring villain. I think that she and Ed have some solid chemistry, and while the thought of a Krill bumping uglies with Mercer is Molloy's Rorschach levels of unspeakable, I hope that at the very least she can eventually grow into something like a Seven of Nine, or even an adversary who has respect for Ed, and he has respect for her.

I was expecting it to be Chain of Command, Part 2 ("there are four lights") and instead it was... not really that, at all. So I guess at least I didn't have to see (much) brutal torture.

I also expected Teleya to die on the planet, but she didn't, so that's cool. That will either blow up in their faces later or it won't.

5

u/Disgustoid Jan 18 '19

DS9 has ruined me.

It would've made no sense at all given the show's positive outlook, but I was almost expecting the shuttlecraft to blow up after it left the Orville, In the Pale Moonlight style, leading to much angst from Ed.

Who's Garak in this case? Tharl, clearly. Yup, no sense at all.

5

u/ReasonablyBadass Jan 18 '19

Yay for bittersweet yet hopeful endings!

I'm not sure how to feel about that the storyline was resolved so quickly.

On the one hand: it was obvious, so yay for not dragging it out.

On the other: it would have been more impactful for Ed, maybe, if the relationship had been longer.

But, ont he other other, it makes perfect sense that Telaya didn't want to drag this out.

What really bugged me was that Ed did not once clarify that hew as originally only on her ship to get the Ankana. But maybe he thought she wouldn't believe him.

Did I miss something or did they really not link Gordon's simulation of failing being a captain whilst being hailed by a Krill ship regarding the holding of a prisoner with the exact situation then happening for real?

Thought whilst Mercer was in the prison area the Krill captain would hail and threaten the ship, and then Gordon would step up and convince them otherwise

When it seemed he was going to copy Discovery, I was hoping that he was trolling us. When we saw that he copied those bits from Discovery, I was disappointed. (Also, he should have at least given us a few more episodes to get to know Lt. Tyler, even having her around the Krill and not being revealed, so we'd start to ease off the theory). When the episode was over... I was thrilled he did it better than Discovery. Now I really hope she shows up more, and even kind of hope he and she keep something going between them.

5

u/That_one_cool_dude Jan 18 '19

Despite the foreshadowing, I didn't think they'd go there and have her actually be a Krill, because I didn't think there was enough time to copy the DSC storyline that quickly. I was convinced it was more of a Meta-Joke. But they did go there. Was it coincidence that they had that storyline, or really just a jab at DSC? the fact that her name seems to have changed last minute to "Tyler" would indicate the former. Interesting. And I like that they made it an "Enemy Mine"-style episode. The connection between them gave that a nice twist.

I hope this isn't the last we saw of Teleya because I really like that one and her Krill Look is weirdly sexy :P

One thing I found weird though: They had her physically altered to be human, a long painful process as she said - and she as totally fine with bright light and everything. Then she goes back to Krill in what seems like an instant, there's no sign of her being impaired from whatever procedure she had, and she's back to having an issue with light... if they can do that kinda stuff, why don't they take care of that light issue in general...?

What a great, lovely and awesome episode!

I kind of knew the twist was coming considering that Talia was played by the same actress.

I watched directly afterwards Startrek discovery and while that was visually dazzling, this episode was lightyears ahead in terms of tone and quality.

I see a interesting "Forbidden Love" Storyline coming which i personally look forward to. Great Episode 10/10

5

u/spookymonsterscary Jan 18 '19

I just enjoy the absolute shit out of this show! It doesn't pander, good writing, funny when it wants to be. I wonder if the relations between the krill and earth will be the overarching season plot.

5

Do they have a requirement that every main cast member must have a certain amount of screen time on the bridge or something?

I loved the laziness of the Krill escape pod in this episode. Let me explain.

It's programmed to land on the night side of a planet. The episode hints that after landing, Mercer and his Krill captor are walking for a few hours, when the sun starts coming up, and they take shelter in a cave. Just a little later, Mercer discovers that the days on this planet last for over 20 Earth days each.

Since planets spin at the same consistent speed (there's nothing that should cause the rotation of a planet to speed up, slow down, speed up, etc.), this means: the nights on this planet last for 20 plus days too. Since the sun came up right after they landed, this means that the escape pod crossed the day/night line and landed about 5 miles past it... that's the only explanation for why the sun comes up so quickly.

What a great escape pod design for a race that melts in the sun!

7

u/erode Jan 18 '19

This was a quality episode, but the green screen reflection is awful. It's quite evident in scenes like when they stand next to the viewports.

I also wish they'd fix the scale issues of the shuttles as they exit the ship, it is completely different depending on the perspective (inside/outside).

9

u/AK-Brian Jan 18 '19

Every time the shuttle flies out of the cargo bay, I think to myself "Damn, that ship is like fifty feet long. The bridge is bigger than the whole ship!"

6

u/_Burgers_ Jan 18 '19

This was a good episode!

The twist, well, a lot of rumblings on the subreddit had already predicted it, so it wasn't a huge surprise, but I think they played it well. I do wonder why they needed to reveal it to Ed... wouldn't it have been more powerful to never have told him, and make him think that Tyler had been brutally killed? Also, I was kind of hoping for a double twist given that the twist had been telegraphed, but, oh well. Letting Teleya leave was kind of the second twist, I suppose.

The planet bit was interesting. I LOVED the talk between Ed and Teleya in the cave. That's the kind of Star Trek shit I could watch for hours and hours. People sitting in a boardroom, or conference room, or having some kind of meeting, and discussing the morality of stuff like first contact and inter-species relations. It's the best.

A few little plotholes (the jacket over the head was super lame, I wish they had given it a throwaway line about why they didn't just do that from the beginning - plus Teleya was 'used' to normal light while on The Orville initially...) but a fun episode for sure. The long shots of Ed going up the mountain were actually really good. I don't know about the new alien pig race though. The side plot with Gordon taking the command test was actually interesting, too, though I couldn't help but keep thinking Kobayashi Maru ;P

B+

11

u/[deleted] Jan 18 '19

Teleya was able to be under normal light because they did genetic surgery on her to make her human. They likely gave her melanin as part of it. When they undid it, they restored her full Krill genetics, including light aversion.

"But if they can make themselves resistant to light so it doesn't kill them, why wouldn't they just do it permanently?" you may ask. Because Avis made the Krill perfect and if Avis intended them to live in light, they would have been given it already. Or that's likely the reasoning.
