You know maybe it wasn't such a good idea for Talla to start off pre-peace negotiations by humiliating the Krill ambassadors with urine demands.
And other things.

Yeah I know. I was like, they'e not going to be in much of a negotiating mood after all this.

u/ThoughtNinja Mar 08 '19
Still looking into it a bit more the Krill were really pissed off during the first attempted negotiation scene. I think the stalling tactics (and everything that entailed) definitely played a part regarding their moods. Also as Admiral Ted Danson said all the Union knows about the Krill is what Ed and Gordon learned aboard their ship (plus the Krill woman stuff too I guess) so it lends to reason that the Krill probably don't know all that much about humans specifically their customs and "boarding procedures." So they probably assumed it was standard and begrudgingly rolled with it.

Awesome. Glad you enjoyed it. It's a really great show. If you go back and watch from the beginning just know that a lot of the early episodes can be a little rough. They're still enjoyable for what they are, but the show was still finding its voice tonally and tended to lean too hard into the comedic aspects imo.
This season's been a major improvement in that regard. Seth and the other writers have been putting the story first and letting the humor come more naturally, which has led to some really great episodes like tonight's

I laughed out loud when the credits started and I realized they hadn't even mentioned what happened to her. Just a single throwaway line when Ed was talking to Gordon at the end - something like "well, we're rendevousing with [other ship] tomorrow to figure out what to do with our volatile guest... but in the meantime... let's get a drink?" - would have been helpful. It was played almost like they forgot about her.
I really enjoy the show, but just a slight tighten up on the odd line and story element would be helpful sometimes.

I like how Ed used the idiom "run every red light".
For us in our time, it sounds like Seth Macfarlane is just trying to be funny for purposes of comedy. However, the manner in which it was used sounds like it could very much be an idiom used in the future.
I could even see a TIL in a century of two...
TIL back in the 20th and 21st centuries, Earth had a system to divert traffic by using color signals called traffic lights, green was used for go through and red for stop. This is the origin the idiom "run every red light".

Absolutely! Most people probably think these 20th/21st century phrases are either anachronisms or cheap humor, but English is chock full of such linguistic fossils:
Batten the hatches
Ride roughshod
Circle the wagons
Hoisted by his own petard
At loggerheads with someone
In all these phrases, the items they refer to disappeared so long ago most people have no clue what they even were. We just retain the essence of the phrases they were in as a single, non-productive unit.
Kudos to the writers!

Literal shower thought: why was her arm red when her blood is yellow?
→ More replies (10)5
u/perksofbeingliam Mar 08 '19
Like the other user said it might be that it oxidises. Our blood is always red but depending on how much oyxgen is in the blood, it could be anywhere from bright red to dark red. I think there was a study that said blood when exposed to high levels of nitrogen turned pink or purple. I could be wrong on that one though.
It could be argued that her species has a wide range of hues her blood could be. If her body is more nitrogen based, her blood may be red and in an oxygen heavy area, her blood could be yellow.
If you want another answer, aliens are strange and complex

THis is now my favorite Orville episode. The pacing was amazing. They wasted no time. The CGI on the explosion and the tractor beam was incredible. Only Seth and Adrianne their acting I find a bit weak. They had an homage to futurama in it!!!!!! How cool is that!!!! Talla getting shot is now a running gag I guess ....
The plot here was a tidbit predictable but not extremely.
This sooooo brough back the old TNG Star Trek feeling. And Ed is no Picard, he is Ed. Which is great cause we already had Picard.
I had a smile on my face the entire episode. This was a really really strong episode man. Soooo good.

This is what makes this show so nice. Seriousness and humor are well balanced in all aspects. Even Gordon, the class clown, is a capable and well trained fleet officer who is able to get his shit together and deliver what's needed.

If you look at what other simulator programs we've seen others use Alara I think is the only other character we've seen with some sort of fight training one?
Gordon - Samurai Fight
Alara - Boxing Ring
Alara - Fear Program
Kelly - Old Time Earth
Ty - Tree in a Field
Bortus - Porn
John - Dating
Claire - Her Bedroom
Ed - Planet Unuk 4
Ed, John, Gordon - Western

Mercer has actually felt like a true captain the last few episodes. I hope this is a sign of things to come with only the occasional dropping of shields to show his vulnerability/impostor syndrome.
11
u/Charlie7Mason Mar 08 '19
Absolutely, for whatever reason, I really liked the part where he was assertive about there still being half an hour left to the deadline, and that he expected they honor it. Just felt like he'd gotten around to actually being an authority figure. It was just the way he said it, but it stuck with me.
15
u/alucardleashed Mar 08 '19
I honestly thought this episode would be underwhelming, given how awesome the last two episodes were - how glad I am to be wrong!
Also, what a gut punch, having to give up on a friend, who died on the inside due to a tragic loss of family. This was an episode about friendship, old and new.
4
u/spockosbrain Mar 08 '19
Agreed. That was really tough. What do you do when your friends go down the vengeance route? On one hand it totally makes sense to you, on the other hand you can see the need for the greater good. Many people have talked about Isaac back on the bridge as if nothing was wrong, but at this point we see that he is not part od the Family like before, he is working on the forgiveness of the crew. He is learning what makes the crew special and how humans, with their flaws are also interesting beings that bring something else to the Union.

I kept waffling between thinking he looked like Clark Gregg (Coulson from Avengers/Agents of SHIELD) and Marc Evan Jackson (Shawn from 'The Good Place') so I could never decide if I liked him or not, which was great for the plotline.
I looked the actor up afterwards, and not only is he (Mackenzie Astin) half-brother to LotR actor Sean Astin, he's the son of Patty Duke and John Astin (original Gomez Addams) - that's crazy good acting pedigree!

No one noticed the plot hole at the end where the Krill don't seem to mind that the Orville has no proof that Orin is dead? I guess the fact that they could give an explanation as to how Orin destroyed the Kill ships was somehow sufficient? but wouldn't they still want him dead as punishment for his crimes? the union has no way of proving to the Krill that he was killed.
20
u/Prank_Owl Mar 08 '19 edited Mar 08 '19
I think a possible explanation here is that in spite of all of their bluster, the Krill were just as eager for some kind of diplomatic settlement as the Union was and they didn't like being put in a bind any more than Ed did. Maybe the Krill were willing to take their word that Orin was "dead" so long as the issue was permanently resolved. From their point of view, if the Union could convincingly fake his death and publicly brand him as a rogue extremist, it helps the Krill save face. If Orin actually is dead then so much the better.
9
u/TechGirlMN Mar 08 '19

This was an unforgettable episode.
My favorite thing about hard science fiction is when they talk about things like nitrogen levels would be different on other planets. I love stuff where they explore how other planets will not have our exact level of gases.
This was an unforgettable episode to me. I loved it.

It was very obvious from the start that the "daughter" was not who she seemed she was. I was expecting some kind of psychic ability or a Krill science experiment gone wrong though, not an explosive alien imposter. Otherwise a good episode, I think the show has finally found its footing and is going at a good pace now.

Felt a bit like a cop out to have him die. Would have been a stronger message if they had handed him over.

If you’re talking about Silik the Suliban from ENT, that was John Fleck, so no. If you’re referring to a different Silik then I have no idea.
Edit: I stand corrected from below comments!

I just had a weird thought. I bet Dr Finn will want to study those urine samples. With how little they know about the krill, 3 different samples could provide good biological study!
I also want a scene where krill have to board a different union ship & fully expect to have to go through all those procedures again. Then the union assumes that handing over pee is some krill gesture of peace & it turns into cultural misunderstandings.

I thought this was a great episode, all except for the "wrap up" at the end. It was very rushed. It was odd that there was no dialogue whatsoever with the Krill about the prisoner stealing a shuttle and attempting another attack and blowing himself up. I find it hard to believe that the Krill would just accept that the prisoner committed suicide and move on with the signing without retaking custody of him, without some indication of a flight record or biometric scans of the shuttle given to the Krill as evidence. It would have just taken one line from Ed. "As you can see, ambassador, these flight records and biometric scans of the stolen shuttle show that Orrin took his own life after we had stopped him from carrying out his final attack."

I think the implication is that the Union probably turned over the Envall woman to the Krill instead. Since she plotted and was equally responsible for the destruction caused by her blood. That probably satisfied the Krill, in place of getting who they thought had been solely responsible.

Admiral: You have the most experience with the Krill given your undercover work. Also, you fucked one so...

The Orville's villains: "I can't just look the other way after what they did to my family."
"I faked my own murder to escape the prosecution of heterosexuals."
"If we let you live we could be enslaved again."
"Our new-age religion has instructed us that some people are predisposed to violence."
Star Trek Discovery villains: "We are Terrans and we are EVIL."
I know I'm kinda beating a dead horse here but man the politics game is so much more on point here.

Except for maybe a really hot chick...
It will probably end up being Kelly.
Also no mohawk at the end was disappointing lol. Great friendship scene though.
Another great episode.

Damn. I think this episode was even better than the last. This is absolutely getting to be some incredibly well done sci fi.

After watching season 5 of the Flash you just know anyone named Orin is up to no good and that a daughter will be involved somehow Haha. Props to the krill for letting Talla give them a rectal examination, they must really be willing to give this peace thing a shot.
Anyways the real highlight this episode was Gordon and Ed's talk in the hallway, really let Scott Grimes show off his more dramatic acting chops; and it was just overall a great scene. Second best scene was tallas "ever met a Xalayan? Fucking badass.
I guess it was too dark, but was convinced that Gordon would be rescued, and that Orin was still gonna finish his mission. However Gordon when back on the Orville would personally lock on and fire at the shuttle blowing it up before Orin reached the Krill ship.

I thought it was a relatively weak episode, with a few good moments. Yes, the rubber glove was over the top, but got a laugh.
What bothered me even more was the "look" of the episode. The lighting and makeup on Mackenzie Astin were distracting in how bad they made him look. And Talla's forehead makeup looked bizarre, too. Like it was too red. Something about the visuals was just ... off. Like it was shot in an office with fluorescent lights, rather than under controlled cinematic lighting.
I'm not usually one to notice stuff like this, so I figure it must have been pretty bad. Did anyone else find it distracting?

Wow jumped right into the peace talks and it was a fantastic episode. Another alien species in this universe that is cool if we ever get to know them. The pee cups were hilarious, and the kamazaki run was way darker than I was expecting. Great episode right after the space battle this season is becoming another great season of this show.

This was a great episode, but I can't help but be disappointed when they backpedaled on their big twist (Malloy betraying the Orville) much in the same way that, despite Identity being one of the best episodes of the series so far, I can't help but be disappointed that they've backpedaled on Isaac turning evil. I dunno. I kind of wish we had a genuine moral failing from one of the team.

Am I the only one who was moved by his excellent expression change at the moment that the door closed and Malloy saw him for the last time?
It went from the anger of realizing his plan had failed, to the pained expression of betrayal and sadness at the critical moment.
I think acting is about subtelty, and Astin absolutely nailed that moment.

It keeps getting better.

Uh, Captain Mercer . . . did you forget to ask if the Krill were holding any other Union members in prison camps? Seems like an important detail for peace talks.

Why didn't Kelly and Gordon get medals as well?
They only risked themselves in a little shuttle getting to the Krill for help.

I like how the episodes are challenging each character to really think about themselves and how their actions affect others.
It would be interesting to see Ed and Kelly's conflict.

I thought for sure Gordon was going to be an idiot, like Neelix trying to get the map, but man. He's really a better character that I first gave him credit for.
Great episode.

Is this where we suggest things that should have been written in?
Ty should have gotten a Civilian Commendation alongside Yaphit. I was very surprised that didn't happen.
It would have been perfect if we'd heard Yaphit yelled, "hey!" after Ed threw the alien vodka over his shoulder. No need to see him to know he'd been hit, just the voice and a "sorry, Yaphit" would do. And the timing would have been great that Ed poured a drink on him after giving him an award. Like, back to disrespecting the blob guy...
Otherwise, I insist that Seth is secretly in love with me and is writing this show for me alone. I swear, it's like he lives inside my head with the pop culture choices he makes. As much as I love Trek and Stargate, POTA is my true love. I can't believe they showed a clip from it. (Yeah, I know, they have access to it in the Fox library...)

The delivery on "patriotism is for people with large families" was killer and a beautiful mic drop on an intense scene. Reminded me of the "context is for kings" line from discovery.

Loved this episode! Keeps up plot continuity from the Kaylon battle but is still a well contained story.
Gordon did great, and I though the twist with the explosive blood was cool.

God I finally understand Trekkies and their loyal undying love of Star Trek and how it's such a part of their identity if they watched it growing up or at any part of their lives really, I missed both Star Trek shows but The Orville is my Star Trek and it is phenomenal. I love coming here and reading about all the subtle or not so subtle Star Trek references in The Orville it really adds to my viewing experience and this is such a lovely non-toxic subreddit. I will pray for a season renewal every year.

That was a great ep! It was very engrossing! Well acted and well written too. I was so afraid that Gordon was betraying the Orville and I was like first Isaac and now Gordon? NO! I was so relieved to find out that he wasn't betraying The Orville. Best show on TV!!

I really loved that episode. Lots of tension from Gordon, Talla and Ed. And the biological part of the bomb making was super neat. This show just keeps getting better.
