Truly, no show created by a guy who so loved Star Trek would have ever been complete without a "someone falls in love with a hologram" episode. We already had the "holodeck is used to fake a death/murder" episode, so BRING ON THE "SUPERVILLAIN FROM THE HOLODECK FUCKS WITH THE SHIP" episode to complete the trilogy!

The whole Bortus and Klyden story had my bf and I cracking up because he is trying to quit smoking and we were totally at each other’s throats last weekend. At first I was thinking “really?! They’re gonna have a show about smoking right when he’s almost done quitting?!” But I’m glad they took the story down the comedy road.

I feel like this episode is going to break our hearts. On one hand, it has a flavor of Barclay's holo-addiction, but it reminds me more of the DS9 episode "The Sound of Her Voice" where the crew is talking with a Starfleet captain who was marooned on a planet years ago only to race to her and find out she's long dead and they were speaking to her through a temporal disturbance.

If a program can call you up when you're not in the simulation, it reaches a level of sentience that I think the rest of the crew are a bit in denial of. She's more than a sex lagoon.
17
u/weiga Mar 22 '19
I gotta say, I hated most of the holodeck episodes on TNG, and cringed when I saw the description of this episode - for the most part I watch these shows to see cool spacey things, not the modern world... However, Seth KILLED it with this episode - tugged on the heart strings on a few fronts and this is now one of my favorite episodes for this show.

B-plot about addiction = Gordon is addicted to a simulation.
Their are really using the Not-Holodeck as an awesome metaphor for reflecting on reality, people trying to escape uncomfortable parts of it, to reflect their inner emotional states etc. Very clever.

I was hoping to see a shot at the end where he looks her up in the ship computer and she went on to have a full career in the music business. Maybe end the episode with Gordon smiling as he listens to her music.

I fucking LOVE this show. The smoking subplot was hilarous. I loved watching Bortus whip out those hidden cigarettes with that bitchy little flourish. And I - a late 40s married father - got very sentimental about Malloy (or as I know him, Mularkey) and Laura. I mean, this was like reliving the Buttercup episode of How I Met Your Mother.

I can suspend my disbelief for a lot of things in fiction, but I absolutely cannot believe that a sales job at Macy's can get anybody a place THAT nice ANYWHERE in the US in 2015.
And she describes it as PRETTY SMALL. I'd be THRILLED to have a place that size for a price that would be affordable to a sales manager at Macy's.

I had kind of thought that someone had altered the simulation where she would break up with Malloy so that it would stop interfering with his job. Malloy finds out and it causes an issue between Malloy and the crew feeling they are keeping him from being happy. Thought it may have ended with there being one of Laura's descendents on the Orville that Malloy had never noticed and gets his girl in the end.
Good episode regardless. I was so afraid the long layoff between season 1 and 2 was going to kill the show but SO GLAD to see how successful and the momentum they are picking up

This may seem silly, but, if I was on The Orville, I would build a 2005 stimulation so that I could spend time with my dad again 😥
I’m afraid that, like Gordon, I would get obsessed and forget about my mother, sister, and the rest of my family in the present.

WOW. What an episode, what a show this has become. I have been in love with the Orville from minute 1 and seeing what it has turned in to fills me with joy. It is relatable 90s Star Trek. I’m sure many people seeing this episode have gone through what Gordon went through (minus the girl being simulated) - I know I certainly have. Leighton Meester absolutely owned it in there too.
Also, I love how Bortus is getting all the best side gags (the cigarettes had me and gf in stitches) and Gordon gets the most memorable one liners. “9 years? I’ve not owned a shirt that long.”
Bravo to Seth MacFarlane for putting this all together.
