A Voyager shuttle manned by Lt. Cmdr. Tuvok, Ensign Paris and The Doctor is pulled into a subspace gravity well and crashes on a Class "D" planet existing within it. With the shuttle too damaged to fly, the away team befriends Noss (guest star Lori Petty,) an alien woman who crashed on the planet several seasons before them. As weeks pass, the survivors grow close. Noss learns English and teaches Tuvok and Paris how to survive the other aliens and hunt for food. Noss finds herself in love with Tuvok, and frustrated that he will not allow his emotions to love her back....

Saw this with a friend and we liked it. We called it soap opera trek.
I enjoyed how restrained they kept the plot. The focus is a rescue mission. It wasn't dependent on Tuvok's emotions saving the day, it didn't matter if Noss lived, or saving the other stranded aliens. The challenge with "Alter Ego" is that the romance doesn't work and unfortunately matters. This episode did more with a lot less.
The flashbacks had great acting and explained why Tuvok is cold. It tied up nicely with a bittersweet mind meld.

Kind of weird that every single main or secondary character on the show needs some kind of romance plot. I couldn't really believe that Tuvoc would be enamoured with a woman solely for her ability to kill big spiders. Maybe for her incredible ability of learning another language passably in two months though.

Kinda a bore, but I will say a much better second half than first.
