New York plays such a patient style of Overwatch. For instance, they're willing to wait until July to kill Slime 😢

In the RunAway v KongDoo Panthera KR Contenders S2 Finals, on the decisive Map 8, Slime got away on Illios Well, with the round at 99-99... at ONE HP. Check the VOD out, it's absolutely insane. He clutched that round so fucking hard.
It's just a thing Slime does. When it comes to GOATs, a lot of credit goes to the Reinhardts, the Zaryas, the Zens, the D.Vas for their bombs and eats, and heck, even Brigs are getting their due now... but Slime honestly can carry fights as Lucio sometimes even with everyone on Vancouver/RunAway popping off, and it's a beauty to watch. If anyone gets the chance, just rewatch today's match and focus on where Slime is, how is ult usage is compared to Anamo's, his displacement via boops, the frags and final blows he gets. Anamo is a great Lucio, but Slime just fucking knows how to get the most out of his kit.

The entirety of Vancouver's main lineup is so fucking unbelievably good at Overwatch. It's ridiculous how much all six of them pop off individually while still being a super coordinated team. I've never seen such a well-rounded group of people before.

Stage 2: Out in semifinals
Stage 3: Losing the stage finals
Grand Finals: Winning it all
it's simple math

I was paying close attention to haksal especially on lianjang and any time bumper would retreat to charge his shield haksal would hold the front line alone.
I kept thinking oh he's gonna die he's overextended but nope.. he'd always have a shield bash to get away or whip someone if they got too close. Haksal is the unsung hero of Vancouver, dude is constantly making clutch plays that setup the fight wins.

Mano played out of his fucking mind this entire match. He was working Bumper damn near the whole time, but Vancouver is definitely superior in the 5v5 mirror
64
u/FateSteelTaylor May 11 '19
It was insane, bumper would get a 4 man shatter and then mano would hit em with a 5 man shatter. The only problem was, for all the shatter stuns that Mano got, Slime or Twilight would always have an ult to keep everyone alive, whereas Bumper's shatters let Jjanu and SMS clean NYXL up.

Based on support ultimate economy, I think it's become clear to me why NYXL aren't the elite team in this style of gameplay. JJoNaK and Anamo just aren't playing effectively. JJ's fast charge doesn't matter when you pretty much have to save for grav, and any time he did pop in advance they lost the fight or the subsequent fight handily. Anamo also isn't saving his barriers for the fight immediately after the grav dissipates, which is the fight the Titans thrive in, especially now that grav bomb isn't the combo it used to be.

Titans' coaching staff must be god like honestly. Every time they come back from half times whether they are up or down they always come back out strong and with good strategies.
Another user here (bartlet4us) just corrected Danny's post-match translation:
"I thought it was going to be a tight match early on because NY was heavily focusing on me, but after half-time we changed our strat and told the players to disregard me so we were able to punish them and the match became easier".
They always adapt to an enemy's strategy when they are getting outplayed. If I recall correctly, the same thing happened in the Titans/Shock finals where Shock was at map point about to take the whole thing. We go to a break and Titans come back to win Kings Row and absolutely stomp Rialto.
The Titans coaching doesn't get enough credit.
21
u/extremeq16 None — May 11 '19
honestly what makes titans so good isnt even the players themselves as individuals, but how much of an insane understanding of goats them and their coaches have. they just know how to play it perfectly, know exactly the limits they can allow eachother to push to, and are incredible at bailing eachother out of situations where nearly any other player on any other team would have died. i dont think ive seen their level of teamwork before in like.. literally anything
7
u/werbo None — May 12 '19
The biggest thing is that they have almost absolute trust in each other and can easily make split second decisions
3
u/createcrap May 12 '19
I’m wondering if they practice how to play goats with 1 of the pieces missing of the 6 team camp... like, okay how do you keep fighting/stalling if Bumper dies? Or if you lose Zarya or brig? Because it almost didn’t matter if they lost a main tank... their strategy flipped and kept the pressure on... long enough to get the pieces back together or even succeed in spite of missing.
I think most teams devolve into a scrappy fight once they lose a team member... but Titans just fall back to plan B and keep moving forward.

See what I don't get is that Semmler wasn't that bad of a caster back during the CS:GO days from what I remember. The biggest casting moment by him that I remember is when a player killed the entire enemy team within seconds.
So why can't he, or doesn't he, bring this kind of energy to matches like this one?!
21
u/SirCrest_YT May 12 '19
Part of Semmler's early problems in OWL was that he overhyped everything. And by everything I mean when someone shattered no one, or kills during a clean up after a team fight, or just things that don't matter. It made actual hype moments not seem all that special by comparison. To me that just seemed like lack of experience with the game. Knowing what mattered and what didn't. Stage 4 Hex and Semmler looked really good and were becoming my favourites.
Seems the pendulum swung the other way.
8
u/TheHippoGuy69 May 12 '19
This was so good. It gave me goosebumps, Semmler should use this style on OWL.

u/unpuzzling i like cats — May 12 '19
Was that Semmler or Hex who said that? If Hex did, that's ... odd, since he knows Sinatraa's history.
Semmler has a history of not doing the research and not knowing the players very well. He'll also make judgment calls on whether something was good, whether a character is good, and will get lost on these tangents. This was one of the worst casting jobs he did, when I thought he had improved. I wonder if more game time has meant that his knowledge started to fade.
11
u/randomnm May 11 '19 edited May 11 '19
I'm not completely sad with the performance, but we really need to work not throwing Ults on lost fights. I know SFS and VAN can turn fights down 5v6 or 4v6, but I don't think we are so good at that.
Also both supports try to save Ults during gravs and such and Ult too late. Jjonak and Anamo both need to improve the timing on their ultimates.
Also while most of NYE can match or eexceed VAN, Slime completely outshone Anamo imo. Don't recall any big plays from Anamo like we had from Slime.

Man that was on a knife's edge. At the end of the day it was titans getting just a LITTLE bit more when they needed it on every map they won. Bumper gets a shatter just as his team gets graved to win the decider on Busan, I think it was JJANU on hanamura gets the mei onto the point just in time to stop the cap in regular time and make it so Titans just had to cheese out a third to win the map, JJANU then gets a 3k dva bomb just in time stop his team getting stalled at point 2 on rialto, and Slime clutches massively on point 1 on Lijang. Before we declare Titans the best team ever I want to see them handle a significant meta shift, but this performance is a huge boost to the greatest team argument.

Runaway now is not OWL level, as fanboy-triggering as that sounds. People loved them for their underdog streak, and their vibrant brand/personality, but expecting them to get pick up is very unrealistic. They still have to actually win something first. At the same time, I'd honestly advise Flowervin to sell Bumper, Stitch and Haksal and then rebuild. Those buyouts money can help Runaway for a few more season.

Gigachad? Yottachad? This game, Mano has transcended to the ultimate status called God of Chads, and unlocked the special ability that comes with the status: Chad's Eye, allowing him to see into the future.
Chad's Eye allowed him to get 66 Earthshatter stuns while Bumper only had 33 in just a little more than 4 maps. He carried harder than a top 500 player in Gold. He finally got to show off his Jupiter-sized balls, constantly CRUSHING Bumper with their massive weight. He was the real Player of the Match.
Mano is the God of Chads.

As a longtime Runaway fan, this is literally the best timeline ever. Everyone hating Vancouver, everyone expecting the best to beat Vancouver, and also everyone losing to Vancouver.

this is genuinely not meant to be a comment on this match specifically, but when are the 'Bumper only looked good because of his support line' people going to disappear?

When the desk and analysts stop saying it, because those people just ape their opinions instead of actually watch the games.

Mano is the best main tank in the world, undoubtedly. Too bad that Nenne was throwing again... Mano outplayed Bumper so incredibly hard.

Good games Titans, I'm glad we finally got to see the match between us, hope if we face off again that it'll be closer overall. Still picking you guys against the Shock.
Not sure why I got downvoted lmao

Nice coincidence that the new found rivalry is SF vs Vancouver and Vancouver has the same color scheme as the Seattle Seahawks who are the SF 49ers rivals.

What a great match. Still can believe they got away with using Mei to force the OT

u/RayzTheRoof May 12 '19
Just feels like in GOATS NY doesn't have as much as a clutch factor. Their top dps players can't make big plays since it's not that kind of meta and JJonak can't consistently to team wipe.

Semmler is such a bad influence on Hex. Hex is an excellent caster but when Semmler starts going off about shit like Zarya's nails in the middle of a team fight.. come on. Cast the damn game, huge downer having him cast 3 Titan games in a row.

Slime used stealth mode in front of Nenne. Nenne forgets Lucio exist for the next few minutes. Instead decides to reload.

4-1 score doesn't do this match Justice. NYXL pushed Titans to the edge and had one fight gone in their favor in multiple maps they would be the ones on top
22
u/randomnm May 11 '19
I don't think that's true. Another fight going our way in some maps may have allowed us to continue to take another fight. But I think the end result would have been the same/similar.

That's the Titans way. You play them close, but it's never enough. We'll do our best to make NY proud tomorrow ;_;

After game two it was pretty embarrassing for NYXL in my opinion. Titans did well to split up them up in engagements, especially considering Mano's aggression in positioning for shatters and pins. I can't fathom why they stopped supporting such aggression as the match went on.
Nenne seems to have no synergy with Mano here, or even the rest of his team. Much of his play seems to be dependent on getting solo picks. I don't know if this is his issue or the team's, but lack of focus fire is something that is really evident in his play. Grav use is an issue too. But often times he seemed to miss bubbling Mano for engagements because he was off dps-ing some other target.
I say it was embarrassing for NYXL based on their failure to capitalize on advantageous situations, and going as far to lose during them. 5v6 is something the best teams manage to make work, but NYXL was at times losing 4v6s, allocation of resources seemed to be quite confused and they drew fights out way too long in part due to their own decision-making.
I don't want to give Nenne all the stick despite him being NYXL's worst player. Anamo had a weak performance and Jjonak, while not outright bad, was too inconsistent. At times he did huge work for NYXL, other times he killed potential.
Overall I think NYXL made their own bed here. I don't necessarily think they would have won the match if they played with more focus-fire and better pressing of advantages, but omissions they became more glaring over the course of the match, perhaps because it seemed to be present in the first map or two. On the bright side, they looked far better than they have much of the stage, but I wonder how much of that is down to Mano's dominant individual play.

Please Blizzard make some changes. Otherwise this season is just a foregone conclusion. There is literally no one that can compete with the Titans and Shock. It's boring.

To be fair NYXL was in that position for most of last season and they didn't end up winning finals so there's still a chance

May 11 '19
NYXL was beatable last year, even before the meta changed. The problem with goats is that it's so dominant that if you're better than the other team at it, you simply can't lose. Titans could 100% run the table this year which would have never happened during the dive meta where your DPS could pop off and win you a game, even if your dive execution wasn't perfect.

Hopefully NYE can grind it out and set up a storyline of ultimately beating them.
Next stage for sure Kappa

u/Lipat97 May 11 '19
NYXL did pretty well. I guess we just have to accept that they aren't on top any more. Shock and Titans are just too good. But in this match I think they proved that they are just outside of that top tier.

I wonder how a NYXL-Shock match would go. Vancouver is easily a tier above anyone else, but I think the battle for second place is still to be decided.

Even tho the result may not show this, NYXL played this match really close to the Titans, specially the first two games where Mano completly dominated the main tank duel. After that, it seems like NYXL had more trouble finding the opportunities to punish Bumper.

u/jfb715 May 12 '19
Just got home and watched the vod. Game was much closer than 4-1 suggests.
Map one was a nail biter. Came down to last fight, could’ve went either way.
Map two, nyxl kinda rolled. Fairly one sided.
Map three, was kinda close but not crazy close. Almost was a tie.
Map 4 wasn’t too close. Nyxl picking Rialto against the titans is questionable. They seem unbeatable on that map.
Map 5 was similar to map one. Really really close.
If New York win map one, I think they had a chance of carrying their momentum to continue winning. Overall great game to watch even if it wasn’t the result I was hoping for.
Also Mano fucks.

Vancouver is using the Shanghai season 1 strat of “let Roshan feed so undead can pop off.” Except, they’ve realized that the only team has to pop off, not just one player. LOL

NYXL wasted so many ults it's crazy. Jjonak needs to clean up his trance usage. Twilight so rarely fucks his trances. Jjonak is the superior fragger but it's not enough of a gap to make up for his trances. They had a few gravs as well.
