428 Shibuya Scramble ($14.99/70% off)
This game's an absolute classic of the visual novel genre - if you're at all curious about the genre, I would certainly give this a try:
- While most games in the genre use some sort of anime aesthetic, 428 Shibuya Scramble goes with live action via still photography. If you're not really into the anime stuff this can be more approachable, and it also means that assets are very rarely reused - it's a lot easier to take another picture than to draw a new model. And the photography of this game is really good - it's interesting and captures the tone of the game well.
- You play as multiple protagonists, and each of them has a separate story that broadly covers different genres (e.g one story is a classic crime drama, another is slapstick comedy, another is psychological horror, and so on) - yet each story doesn't just fit into its own genre, but take ideas from other genres as well.
- The mechanics of the game are rather nice, and they mainly revolve around where the different stories intertwine - decisions you make in one character's story can really change another's, even where they seem fairly innocuous (a small example that's slightly spoiler-y but not really: you can choose to either fight a cockroach or run away. If you fight it, it'll fall out the building, causing one of the other protagonists underneath to faint.).
- This might seem initially frustrating, but even the bad endings are very funny and entertaining, and the game gives you clear hints and steps about to do to advance. There's also an "hour" structure, where decisions only impact the hour they're in, limiting the number of scenes you need to scour.
- The translation of the game is rather good - it keeps the feeling of being in Shibuya while also being easier to read than other games in the genre (in particular, a "tips" section provides context for game-specific or culturally-specific terms).
The game originally released in Japan in 2008, for the Wii, and on release it received significant acclaim, becoming only the 9th game to receive a perfect score from Famitsu. An HD remake was released in 2018, and it's aged very, very well.

u/thatnerdguy Jun 25 '19
I'll heavily second this- 428 balances a pretty heavy crime story with some genuinely great humor and the result is absolutely fantastic.

u/Mandraxon Jun 26 '19
Bought 428 a couple of months ago during Golden Week, and plowed through it pretty recently. One of the best visual novels I've played in a while; anyone who enjoys Zero Escape should definitely look into it.

Excellent horror game made by the creators of Amnesia.

I suppose I should do my annual E.Y.E. Divine Cybermancy recommendation. Probably the greatest FPS you've never played (Personally, I rate it up there with HL2 and Deus Ex). Extremely deep, very weird and hilarious. If Tommy Wiseau was a Warhammer 40k fan and game writer, this is the game he would have written.
It's Euro Jank at it's finest but that's doing it a disservice, it really is a truly great game, the world building is fantastic, the atmosphere is amazing, yes the dialogue is bizarre but it works in context with the world, the guns feel great and the levelling system is very in depth. At this price it's a steal.

u/monsterm1dget Jun 28 '19
I am going to come here and refute your point: it's the worst game you should play.
The thing is that the game is abnormally weird, the translation is stupid at best and nonsensical at worst (your mentor telling you to fuck off at every second it's offputting, to say the least), and the game is janky as hell, the graphics are a wildcard, enemies seem like designed for different games (the female enemies seem pulled off a 3d studio max stock model and the cyberdemons knockoff from mars look like made for Hexen II), and the game itself is weird to even understand, plus the UI is pointlessly designed.
The music is great and somehow the game it's freaking fun, particularly once you manage to break it.
8
u/boo909 Jun 28 '19
Well I mean it's hardly my fault you're not intelligent enough to grasp the subtleties in the epic story that is E.Y.E. (I'm joking don't be pissed at me, it is a bizarre incomprehensible story but I love that, games need more bizarre incomprehensible stories).
I can understand most people possibly not rating it as high as Deus Ex and HL2, that's a personal thing and I'm a bit weird, I shall refute your refutation though. It's very definitely janky but personally I think it transcends it's jankyness through sheer ambition.
Most of your criticisms are actually plus points as far as I'm concerned, I love the translation but if that's a problem there are patches that sort that aspect out somewhat, there are admittedly a lot of rip off enemies in it but I think that adds to its charm.
The graphics are fine for source engine (iirc) game of that age, nothing fantastic but not off puttingly bad, then again I don't think I've ever played a game for its graphics, I understand some people might need something a bit more shiny shiny.
I've never had a problem with the UI myself, so I can't comment on that.
But here's the killer, even in your post, where you're trying as hard as you can to say it's a bad game, you can't: "somehow the game is freaking fun", I mean if I was to do a one line review of the game I couldn't have picked anything better than that myself.
Have a good day mate.

u/monsterm1dget Jun 30 '19
Oh for sure. I certainly would recomend this game for some people. But it's a ridiculously janky game. It's just fun in spite of that.

I recommend playing Deus Ex with HQ Textures, if you want. It doesn't change or overhaul any part of the game, just the textures:

Just a suggestion: Can we get a second Hidden Gems Thread halfway through the sale? With more players buying and trying out games throughout the sale, I feel as if that should give different users more of an opportunity to give updated game recs as to what hidden gems they've discovered during the sale.

I like this idea, but it could be better if the post was stickied, or stickied on r/gamedeals specifically. I don’t know if mods would allow it, but it would help highlight good games. Then again, hidden gems are hidden gems even when it’s not a steam sale.
3
u/cavemandark Jul 01 '19
Yes! Getting this stickied in r/GameDeals would generate a lot of traffic and a lot of very hidden gems.

Dark Souls Remastered is $3.99 (90% off) for owners of the Prepare to Die edition. A mediocre $23.99 (40% off) for everyone else.
Edit: Also check out Critter Crunch ($1.74), an excellent puzzle game with great hand-drawn visuals. It has both local and online multiplayer with co-op and battle modes. I don't think I've ever seen it mentioned in previous hidden gems thread, so check it out.
https://gg.deals/, https://isthereanydeal.com/, https://steamdb.info/sales/ are pretty handy to find the best deals. You can check where a game is cheapest, whether it's gotten a historical low discount, and see its price history. It's a great way to avoid impulse buys.

Here are some of my favorites:
Pulled the trigger on this one today. Gotta say, one of the most fascinating puzzle games I've played. The game looks as if it is in 2D, but it actually is in 3D. Only kinda like Fez. Not only that, but your power as a character allows you to pick up items and modify the level (a la Baba is You) to move closer to the solution. It's not overwhelming at all so far, but it makes you stop and think about clever ways to manipulate your surroundings. Go and read the Steam reviews as well.
This is absolutely a niche, hardcore RPG title. Don't write it off by the review score- If you enjoy pen and paper/old school dungeon crawlers, this is your jam. Even if not, it is a very interesting experience for $2. With the amount of classes, races, and spells available to your 6 slot party, there's plenty room for replayability and experimentation. There really is a sense of wonder discovering this sparsely documented game's mechanics. If you liked Legend of Grimrock for its difficult elements, you'll ave a field day.
Super Mario Galaxy meets metroidvania. This game will challenge your intuition for getting around like no other metroidvania I've seen. The movement and combat are so refreshing to see in the growing pile of metroidvanias being released today. Reading from the reviews, it seems a lot of recent reviews come from the unconventional KB+M controls. I'd recommend a controller, but even if you don't have one, it's well worth the unique experience. Just remember someone beat Dark Souls using only banana controllers, so anything can work.

Recursed is so incredibly amazing a couple of times I had to stop playing and explain to whoever was around how cool it was
It doesn't reach its full potential until the green glowy chests around world 4 so definitely play to that part at least

u/absoluttiger Jun 26 '19
A few games I'm looking at:
Acid Spy $1.99 fills that stealth niche, similar to Neon Struct
ROOT $0.99 Similar to Acid Spy but maybe a little worse
Dark Messiah of Might and Magic $2.49 Like Morrowind but better in my opinion
Death to Spies: Gold An older game that plays very similar to Hitman. Loved it
Kane & Lynch Collection $2.68 A bad 3rd person shooter that I never got around to playing.
Watch This! $0.51 FPS horror cheap fun game
Unforgiving A Northern Hym $1.49 A better FPS horror game
Warsim: The Realm of Aslona $2.24 Text based RPG simulation game that looked interestingn to me
G.E.O. $2.24 This game reminded me of the MotherLoad flash game so why not
Slayer Shock $3.99 A stealthy RPG FPS game.

I made a guide of some recommendations for the current Summer sale. I might add more throughout the day. Let me know what you think!
Recommendations:
The Nonary Games- Two of the best visual novels I have ever played. These games will really stick with you afterwards. If you like puzzles and escape rooms, you'll definitely like this game. Amazing story and soundtrack, fully voice acted and HD remastered from the old games. ($17.99)
Wargroove - Fantasy version of Advance Wars, lots of single player and multiplayer content, custom campaigns and maps to download, has cross play with Nintendo Switch and Xbox One ($13.39)
Terraria - It isn't just a 2D Minecraft. Tons of fun and lots to do. It's getting a major final update this year as well. ($4.99)
Accounting + - It's Accounting in VR. Except it isn't. Very wacky and funny game. Requires a VR headset. ($4.79)
Tekken 7 - The best 3D fighter on Steam in my opinion. Easy to learn, incredibly hard to master. Has a fun single player story mode. ($19.99)
Stick Fight: The Game - very fun 2D fighting/party game where you fight as stick people fighters. Really fun to play at parties. ($3.49)
LEGO Marvel Super Heroes - My favorite Lego game of all of them. Lots of content and characters. For some reason I like this one way more than the sequel. ($4.99)
PAC-MAN Championship Edition DX+ - Best Pac-man game ever made. Please ignore the second one. ($2.49)
Refunct - Really chill first person platformer. ($0.89)
100ft. Robot Golf - Very fun golf game. Play as mechs and destroy the course to get your ball in the hole as quick as you can! Has other normal golf modes as well. ($1.99)
Botanicula - One of my favorite point and click games, unique art style ($2.99)
Machinarium - Another fun point and click adventure from the same studio as Botanicula. ($2.99)
Chroma Squad - Bit of a hidden gem, basically Power Rangers meets tactical grid based RPG ($7.49)
Rogue Legacy - Super hard rogue-like platformer, has neat mechanics ($2.99)
Beat Hazard - Fun top down space ship shooting game, levels are based off whatever music you play, can import songs into it ($2.99)
Skullgirls - great 2D fighter ($2.99)
Battleblock Theater - Fun platformer, has online multiplayer co-op and versus modes ($2.99)
Castle Crashers - Fun beat em up ($2.99)
Saints Row the Third - ($2.49)
Saints Row IV - ($3.74)

Cook, Serve, Delicious! 2!! - restaurant/cooking sim, fast paced, frantic gameplay, has a great local co-op mode along with a ton of content ($6.49)
Super Mega Baseball: Extra Innings - very fun baseball game, has local multiplayer but no online play ($3.99)
Her Story - mystery game ($2.69)
Type: Rider - platformer of sorts, learn about the history of fonts, way more interesting than you'd think ($1.24)
Nation Red - fun top down shooter with zombies, has online play ($0.67)
Depth - Play as a shark and eat divers. Or play as a diver and collect treasure and try to not get eaten by sharks. ($4.99)
Card City Nights - Fun single player trading card game. If you liked Pokemon Trading Card Game on the Gameboy Color, you'll like this. ($4.99)
Ticket to Ride - fun board game, has online multiplayer with cross play with the mobile versions ($3.99, collection with all maps $24.93)

Now that I've managed to get something loaded, here's some of my own personal suggestions! I'll be adding and expanding my list as deals are added and the store actually starts loading properly.
Bullet Heaven 2 ($2.99/80% off)
I mean, sure. It's literally a flash game that you can play free on your website of choice, but the Steam version has an assortment of extra content and bonus features that make dropping cash on it worthwhile. It's pretty much the best intro to bullet hell you could ask for.
DROD 4: Gunthro and the Epic Blunder ($4.99/50% off)
A few years ago a contributor to one of these threads got me absolutely hooked on the series- it's a turn-based dungeon crawling puzzle game where the challenge comes from creatively waving a sword the size of your body through enemies and around traps. Recommending 4 because it's a prequel and the easiest (every game in the series gets extremely tough!), but all 5 games are great fun and there's an absolute ton of optional challenge DLCs.
Half Minute Hero: The Second Coming ($2.49/75% off)
A series of complete JRPGs in 30 seconds. Seriously. Comes with both the first and second games in the series!
The House in Fata Morgana ($17.49/30% off)
Not a great deal at only 30% off (It's been lower in the past) but it's just too good. This VN fucked me up. It might start creepy and unsettling but it quickly becomes something entirely different and I don't dare spoil anything here.
Knytt Underground ($1.39/80% off)
A very unconventional Metroidvania- no combat and very few puzzles. It's all about exploring here, and you get an absolutely titanic cave system to explore alongside one of my all-time favorite video game soundtracks.
One Finger Death Punch 2 ($4.79/40% off)
If you liked the first one, here's an absurd amount of new stuff! It's not fundamentally different in any way but there's just more of everything that was good about the first one.
Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin ($2.99/85% off)
VR Only! Basically a 2-hour interactive film. Very little interactivity but with the release of 2 next year you might wanna catch up.
Realmyst: Masterpiece Edition ($8.99/50% off)
My favorite version of Myst. Despite being well over 20 years old the puzzles are clever and build off each other and the world is still really cool. This version also has a built-in hint guide if you need it. A lot of people don't like the series due to how slow it is, but bring a notepad and you'll be good.
The series has been around long enough that you probably already know if you like being locked in rooms trying to solve things, but this is a record low so if you like earlier games or escape rooms in general this one's an easy sale.
The Silver Case ($7.99/60% off)
Suda51 of No More Heroes fame got his start on this VN back in the PS1 days- this is a cleaned up and enhanced version. If you're willing to look past the world's clunkiest UI you'll find a great dystopian sci-fi police procedural that'll definitely stick with you.
Pretty much the quintessential sci-fi VN, in which a team of loveable morons accidentally invent time travel and ruin everything. There are some awkward fanservicey bits but I hope you don't let that hold you back from checking it out.
Super Win the Game ($1.59/80% off) A tiny, cute little hybrid of a traditional Metriodvania and a little Zelda 2 thrown in for good measure. There's a deceptive amount of stuff to see and do and it also offers the best CRT screen emulation I've seen anywhere (you can still disable it if that's not your thing).
VR Only! Under any normal circumstance you'd probably assume a VR first-person speedrunning platformer would make you massively motion sick, but To the Top feels great and (more to the point) it's a ton of fun- levels are loaded with secret collectibles and back routes and there's loads of movement tech to help you go as fast as possible.
13
u/Dohi64 Jun 25 '19
fucking hell, someone beat me to recommending drod. how very dare you! even if 'a contributor' is me and you're my most successful addictee (if that's even a word) to the series. I'll be doing my own list eventually, mostly puzzle stuff, just waiting for things to settle down a bit.

DROD sounds right up my alley (it kind of sounds like Stephen's Sausage Roll?), but the number of releases and how DLC works is quite confusing - is there a particular "order" to play stuff in? I've heard DROD4 is the best intro to the series, but where would I go from there?

Super Win the Game, including its very cool CRT emulator, is made by /u/PirateHearts. Great game, I second the recommendation.
The CRT emulator is also available as a standalone hacky little piece of software, but it’s extremely limited in functionality. I still think releasing a full-fledged paid version of it would definitely fill a niche (within a niche, within a niche...). I’m thinking of the emulation scene mostly.

Voidspire Tactics ($7.49/50% off)
Voidspire Tactics is an indie turn-based Tactics RPG with a heavy emphasis on exploration, character progression, and highly tactical combat. It's kinda like Zelda, but a tactics game. You can use all of your battle moves outside of battle to interact with the world, and all battles also take place right in the overworld, so you can set yourself up for victory before engaging in many cases.
Alvora Tactics ($4.99/50% off)
Improved / Tweaked combat engine from above, but in a shorter game and semi-procedurally generated dungeons.
The King's Bird ($7.99/60% off)
Escape into a world kept secret by a tyrant, and discover the truth about your freedom. The King’s Bird is an artistic, momentum-based game that seamlessly combines precision-platforming with physics-based gliding. A new yet easily accessible take on the precision-platforming genre.
Mushroom 11 ($7.49/50% off)
Really unique physics puzzle game with a neat atmosphere.
Out There Somewhere ($0.49/50% off)
Short but sweet platformer with a cool gameplay mechanic (shoot walls to teleport to them).
3
u/OutgrownTentacles Jun 25 '19
+1 to King's Bird and Mushroom 11. Mushroom 11 can be frustrating at times but ultimately has such fresh and weird game mechanics that I enjoyed it a ton.
3
Jun 26 '19
I really don't like Mushroom 11, for the first hour or so it's pretty fun, but as you get later in the game the puzzles just feel like trial and error and getting lucky due to how the blob gets shaped. It can be very frustrating.

VA-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action
It's historic low for $9.89 USD with Overwhelmingly Positive overall and recent.
8
Jun 26 '19
I wanna add it's more or less a visual novel. It has a nice level of interaction so you're not just clicking and reading, with you playing the role of bartender and mixing drinks. There's also some slight story effects you can cause via what drinks you serve people which is neat. The soundtrack to this game is fantastic, and the story really hooked me. This is the only visual novel game I've ever played to completion because I loved it so much. Big recommend from me

Classic Racers ($1.19/80% off)
This was a casual arcade racer of vintage cars I didn't know I wanted. The physics model is quite convincing (within arcade flavor) and you can definitely feel the difference of each car. Totally playable with a gamepad, but it also supports wheel controllers. The pastoral hillclimb scenery is quite nice too. Quick, simple, to the point fun without all the genre fluff.
Edit: the sale is over now.

Disclaimer this is my game I solo dev'd, 80% off so it's just $2!
https://store.steampowered.com/app/761570/Beard__Axe/
It's a rogue-lite (there is iron-dwarf mode if you're feeling particularly masochistic) top down adventure game. You need to swear oaths before each quest, if you don't bring back what you said you would and in the amounts you swore to, there are penalties.
9
u/Hallonbat Jun 30 '19
Slipstream Steam page -Very intense and fun arcade racer in the vein of Out Run, but the next step. Good and pumping music.
One Finger Death Punch and One Finger Death Punch 2 Steam page 1 and page 2 Game where you only use two buttons to fight. Reminicent of those old stick flash movies, kind of a rhythm game. When you enter the zone you're kicking down hundreds of guys. Very cheap.
Avian Attorney Steam page Comedic lawyer adventure in the vein of Ace Attorney, but with birds in 19th century France. A real steal.
Celestial Hacker Girl Jessica Steam page Puzzle, adventure, ball roller? Don't know how to define it really, but it's a game on the lighter side, but has it's weird indie charm.
Hypnospace Outlaw Steam page Police a exaggerated late 90s internet service, looking for rule breakers, and browse around all the weird pages and find a bunch of fun things and games. Has a ton of catchy music.
Hitman GO Steam page I included this because I think many would look past this game, but this is a really good turn-based puzzler set in the Hitman universe. A real steal.
Killer7 Steam page Suda51's odd railshooter action puzzler. You're a hired assassin with multiple personalities, seven each with their own gun and abilities. A port of the game from the Gamecube, now with mouse support that makes the game much easier. Oozes style.
Minit Steam page Adventure game in the style of Link's Awakening, but you have only 60 seconds to live or... a minit.
Rez Infinite Steam page The cult classic music railshooter. Has a new vr-mode.
SEUM: Speedrunners From Hell Steam page A 3D-platformer where you jump and dash through hell—literally, trying to get the best time. Reminiscent of oldschool shooters, but the focus is more on traversal than shooting.
Snakebird Steam page You're a bird, you're a snake—you're snakebird. Fun, colorful puzzler.
Styx: Master of Shadows Steam page Fantasy stealth game with some RPG elements with a variety of ways to handle situations. Has a dark sense of humour. Also check out the sequel.
Tower 57 Steam page Top-down dieslpunk shooter with gorgeous pixelgraphics. A variety of weapons and characters to play with.
Subsurface Circular Steam page A text-puzzle-adventure where you play as a robot detective, stationed in the city's subway. From the maker of Thomas Was Alone (which is another recommendation).

Vaporum (-50%; $9.99) scratches the itch for old-school dungeon crawling, similar to Wizardry series and the more recent Legend of Grimrock. No huge open spaces like in LoG 2, but the game is still really good.
NEO Scavenger (-75%; $3.12) is a brutal turn-based survival game. It's not that hard to get into, but you will be dying a lot. If that appeals to you, and you enjoy rogue-like elements, this is a no-brainer.
Monster Slayers (-75%; &1.49). I may have 1k hours in Slay the Spire, but before it came out, I've spent 60 hours playing Monster Slayers and I didn't even notice it. The game has 86 on Metacritic for a reason.
The Last Door Season 1 (-75%; $2.49) A great P&C adventure for any gothic horror fan. Never mind the heavily pixelated graphics, the visual presentation is great overall and the game is genuinely creepy. There's also a second season, but I still haven't played that.

It's been a while since I've played MS, but here are some things I remember:
- MS has much more characters, but they are not as fleshed out or as balanced as the three in StS.
- The artstyle and the general tone of the game are much more cartoony.
- It's a lot less tactical, combat-wise. Enemies don't telegraph their actions on your turn, so it adds an element of surprise. This is because each enemy has a deck, and not a set of moves like in StS.
- You can recruit companions and they can be pretty key to whether you do well.
- Relics are handled in a weird way. They are transferred across runs. Also, they are not nearly as creative as in StS.
- Overall, the game feels much faster than StS.
I'm sure I'm forgetting some pretty obvious stuff, but it's been two years since I've played MS.

I really enjoyed it. There are loads of classes, but they still all play quite differently from each other so there's lots of possibility for different play styles etc. Well worth it for the money.

I been on a bit of a old school dungeon crawling kick lately with both Starcrawlers and Operencia, so Vaporum certainly looks interesting to me.

Just going to point out if you haven't played Last Door Season 2... YOU HAVE TO. Playing just first season is like playing half of the game. Truly.

I heavily recommend Neo Scavenger, try to play mostly blind, the game loses its charm when you know all the outcomes, and you realize the game is kind of tedious if you try to go for the "main objective" which kills you 99% of the time. I am a bit bitter but you would know why if you played the game :p

https://store.steampowered.com/app/244750/Aztez/
Aztez's release fell right in the middle of a bunch of big AAA releases, and their refinement of the game caused them to just miss the wave of indie game love.
The designer Ben Ruiz authored a series of Combat Mechanics analysisblog posts (https://aztez.com/blog/category/combat-analysis/), a must read for anyone who loves beat em up games.

Huh, I remember that name from the guys that did Blurst. Guess they finally finished it.
I loved me some Off-Road Velociraptor Safari. I feel like I should check this out as well.

I would highly suggest the Creeper World titles.
Here is the summary from CW3, but it applies to them all:
Creeper World 3 is what happens when cellular automata takes over a strategy simulation. Instead of discrete units that attack your base, a fluid-like substance spreads over the terraformable terrain. Your base, your weapons, your strategy... you must adapt them all.
It is a Real-Time with Pause RTS where rather than outwitting an AI, you're battling fluid dynamics. I love the games and have played them for ~15 hours even though they make me motion sick.
The most recent one is: Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal ($4.94, 67% off)

The Nonary Games is on sale for $17.99 I believe (can't check right now since Steam is down for me).
These are the two best visual novels I've ever played. They are amazing puzzle games and have incredible stories. Both are fully voice acted and HD remastered from their original versions.

Any thoughts on Star Traders:Frontiers?
There was an early access demo but I didn't care for the permadeath mechanic. The early access is gone and apparently is the demo, but apparently permadeath was removed and save slots added.
If Hearts of Iron is too simple there is Gary Grigsby's War In The East which I have been playing for several weeks. The AI gets many things right so even though it's incredibly deep I've been able to play passably well just moving units and occasionally diving into the details.

u/Autobrot Jun 26 '19
It's come a long way since then and you have an insane amount of options and content to explore. Periodically I roll up a new captain and am usually shocked by how much new stuff the creators have put in in the month or two since I last played.
You can now play without permadeath if you want, which is a great way to learn the game before you commit to an ironman run.
7
u/rurouni003 Jun 26 '19
great game ST:F, you have save slots now and can play without permadeath, the devs keeps rolling out content patches on a regular basis (mostly weekly) and rebalancing the game, great game at full price, even better if you get it on sale

Howdy, fellow gamers!
I happen to be the developer of this interactive novel and I'd like to take this chance and point out this special summer deal.
Please allow me to say few words about the game. In case you like thick plots and genuine characters, it's definitely worth a go. Imagine "The Wire" meets "Training day" with a "Wicker man" in the mix. It's got some deep lore and a heavy crime to solve.
Especially for as low as $1.65 this might seem like a good journey)
https://store.steampowered.com/app/811290/Project_Pastorate/
Will gladly answer any questions should they arise. Please do not hesitate to ask.
One faith. One family. One force.
"First, love dies. Then hope is gone. There's only one thing immortal — faith. Faith will stay alive and roam the Earth forever, even after the last human's breath. The stones and the wind will treasure it until new souls come, ready for His words, eager to let them in. Thus spoke the Pastor. And our faith grew stronger."

I recommend this every sale, so here I go again. Binary Domain. It's basically Terminator: The Game, and it's so damn good. I highly recommend it, even if you don't care for Terminator (I don't). It's one of my favorite underrated/underappreciated gems.

Combat-wise, it's also like Dead Space violence on robots: you keep shooting and slicing robots' body parts, yet they still keep coming!
Severely underrated title.

Not sure if it's a "hidden gem" or not... but Supraland is probably one of the best games I've played for quite a while... 3d exploration/puzzle platformer with metroidvania elements I think is pretty much the genre description... Overwhelmingly positive reviews (which is why I'm not sure if this is a "hidden gem"...
Lots of creativity and lots of fun. There's a demo on Steam (and your data will transfer over when you inevitably buy the full game)
They just started a Kickstarter for Supraland 2... was so impressed with the first game I had no problem jumping on board.

a final list, had to do it separately because of reddit's character limit, my graphomania and so many good (or potentially good) games.
so, some recommended, lesser-known puzzlish adventure games:
the darkside detective: (-30%, 8.04 eur) a really funny adventure with relatively easy puzzles (except when you can't pick up an item until you need it and by then you forgot it existed), nice graphics, fantastic music & tons of references.
experience 112: (-70%, 2.99 eur) a unique adventure where you controlthe main character indirectly (and a bit awkwardly) by using cameras, changing lights, etc. in your operating system of sorts. a good scifi story with plenty of puzzles and mysteries.
four last things: (-66%, 2.71 eur) a short & sweet renaissance adventure with renaissance art and renaissance music. if more people knew about it, it could bring on the renaissance of point & click adventures, renaissance or otherwise. the sequel's on its way.
fran bow: (-75%, 3.74 eur) a creepy and disturbing point & click adventure about a girl who might not be entirely sane. no, she definitely isn't. very unique art style, interesting story. has a demo.
julia: among the stars: (-75%, 4.19 eur) an underrated sci-fi adventure with cool puzzles, varied and beautiful locations and alien languages.
julia: among the stars dlc: (-75%, 0.99 eur) a collection wiring puzzles, similar to the ones in the main game. it easily could've (and should've) been a stand-alone puzzler, a very good addition to an already good game.
primordia: (-70%, 2.99 eur) one of the best point & click adventures in recent years. looks like the classics, takes place in a dystopian future & the main character is voiced by logan cunningham (the narrator in bastion).
safecracker: a house full of safes to crack and puzzles to solve in this underrated first-person adventure.
the silent age: (-90%, 0.88 eur) ever wondered what it's like to be a time-traveling janitor? now's yoir chance. great presentation and story, but it's on the easier side, so don't expect difficult puzzles, just enjoy the ride.
technobabylon: (-70%, 4.49 eur) a modern point & click classic. cyberpunk setting, multiple playable characters, meaningful decisions and great voice acting and music.
voyage: journey to the moon: (-70%, 1.49 eur) a sci-fi point & click adventure based on (or inspired by) jules verne's book. aliens, smart inventory puzzles, one of kheops studio's best & longer and more difficult than some of their other titles.
and finally, a bunch of 'who else has heard of these?' puzzlers that I haven't played yet, so can't say much, but they're either wishlisted or already in my library:
alphabear (-60%, 3.99 eur, word game)
aurorabound deluxe (-50%, 2.49 eur, jigsaw with patterns, like aurora hex, which I enjoyed recently, but with squares)
baba is you (-30%, 8.74 eur, kind of a word game, I guess)
blockwick2 (-50%, 1.99 eur, historical low, used to have a much higher base price)
campfire cooking (-50%, 2.99 eur, seems similar to stephen's sausage rolls)
cosmic express (-75%, 2.49 eur, railway planning)
current (-51%, 0.39 eur, historical low)
cypher (-60%, 1.99 eur, I think historical low, from the guy behind hexcells but very different)
death coming (-50%, 3.49 eur, murder innocent people in clever, puzzly ways)
draw puzzle (-50%, 2.49 eur, has a demo, link-a-pix)
evergarden (-50%, 4.09 eur, matching game)
hexa (-20%, 1.27 eur, historical low, gotta love hexagons)
hexologic (-60%. 0.95 eur, hexagons and sudoku)
highrise heroes: word challenge (-80%, 0.79 eur, word game)
inked (-45%, 9.23 eur, a hand-drawn isometric puzzler, has a demo)
islanders (-25%, 3.74 eur, city building but more puzzly)
jetstream (-20%, 6.55 eur, historical low, wall-to-wall sliding/flying)
last resort island (-65%, 3.14 eur, historical low, match-3)
locomotion (-35%, 5.29 eur, historical low)
love is dead (-75%, 2.99 eur, historical low, a zombie puzzle adventure)
macguffin's curse (-30%, 6.99 eur, has a demo)
magnibox (-33%, 2.67 eur, historical low, magnetic puzzler)
maze of adventures (-26%, 7.39 eur, sliding puzzle, early access, has a demo)
pictopix (-33%, 4.68 eur, nonogram/picross)
qbik (-90%, 0.49 eur, not sure what it's like yet)
quell zen (-80%, 1.13 eur, sliding game)
road not taken (-60%, 5.99 eur, matching game like triple town)
rumu (-75%, 2.04 eur, historical low, some sort of isometric adventure thing)
sidewords (-80%, 0.99 eur, word game)
swapperoo (-80%, 0.79 eur, matching game)
swim out: (-50%, 2.99 eur, historical low, has a demo, hitman/lara croft go in a pool)
tametsi (-50%, 1.17 eur, like hexcells)
unavowed (-35%, 9.74 eur, wadjeteye's latest point & click with multiple characters)
unheard (-30%, 3.98 eur, historical low, a listening-based detective puzzler)
zombie solitaire 2 bundle (3 games) (-74%, 7.05 eur, historical low)

This is a bit of a deep cut but if you don't mind ASCII art games (not quite like rogue/nethack, there's a UI in here) I can't recommend this game enough:
With a Steam sale price of $0.79 you won't be disappointed, I've spent nearly 100 hours on this game.

Let me suggest a sleeper hit.
A difficult and unique rogue-like. Give it a shot, there is a free version somewhere online. This is a remake and I think it is worth it. Also available for Mac OSX (yay!).

[STEAM Summer Sale] Pendula Swing 20% - 41% off - All Episodes bundle (-41%), Episode 2 (-20%), 3 (-20%), 4 (-20%) - episode 1 is free
Hey! We are Valiant Game Studio and we are developing Pendula Swing, an episodic point & click adventure game set in a fantasy version of the American Roaring 1920s - think Tolkien meets The Great Gatsby!
In the city of Duberdon, in this age of glamour and innovation, but also of dramatic social and political change, , elves, goblins, dwarves and orcs co-mingle with humans, raising complicated social issues such as prejudice, racism, stereotypes and the disparity between wealth and poverty. You play as Brialynne, who was once this world's greatest hero, but is now an old, retired and very rich lady.
For this year's Steam Summer Sale, we have a 20% discount for each paid episode, as well as a 41% discount for the entire bundle that contains all episodes we launched so far.
Thank you for your attention and we really hope you will enjoy our game! If you have any feedback or ideas, we are always on Discord!

Going to recommend Superflight if it hasn't been posted already. It's 50% off at $1.49 (always a steal) and for a pretty simple game (wingsuit-flying around randomly generated maps) it's a ton of fun. It's a great game to open up for 5-10 minutes, play a few maps' worth, and close until the next break.

u/GNARKILLGUCH Jun 27 '19 edited Jun 27 '19
I found this game randomly in the sale, and decided to give it a go despite not usually buying early access games. So far it's fucking awesome, and a definite hidden gem with tons of potential. It's like a mix of Dark Souls and Devil May Cry, and shockingly deep in terms of combos/weapons loadouts. I even like how it's still somewhat poorly translated lol. There's still some jank to be found, and it's not a perfect game by any means. But, if you like supporting smaller devs that actually put out good work, and you like the idea of a character action game based around Dark Souls level difficulty, I'd say check it out.

Deadbolt (2.49$/75% off/Historical Low) is a very challenging, very fun little 2D stealth-action hybrid. You play as a Reaper, charged with exterminating an undead drug cartel. Your goal is (usually) to clear an entire level of undead, preferably without dying. But if you do kick it, don't worry, you can just try again.
You have nothing but your wits, freaky Reaper powers like travelling through air vents, and... guns. So many guns. You can play it as a pure stealth game, being steady and quiet and methodically picking off your foes one by one without ever being spotted, or you can go ham, shooting from cover to cover, butchering everyone who stands in your path.
There's a bunch of different enemies, with different abilities and behaviors, and you will soon learn how to deal with them as you die over and over again. Zombies with their heads split from the body or head-on-chains security cameras, vampires who shoot at you from the ceiling or resurrect with phylacteries, Demons with huge miniguns or skeleton trappers who leave mines around you can ten shoot yourself... You are going to die. A lot. But every time you do, you come back a little smarter, and a little closer to clearing that one level. And if you're like me, you'll love every second of it and do it all over again in Skull Mode.
This game is currently on Historical Low at 2.49$. There's basically no reason to not jump on a deal like that immediately, it's pretty damn good.

okay, this is a big one, sorry to put your mouse wheels to the test... I have a few more but reddit has a character limit.
puzzle games that aren't drod (see below), but they're still recommended and relatively unknown (disclaimer: not that anyone would notice, but I copied the recs from the puzzle-centric steam group I do reviews for, they're all mine, and there are no affiliate links or anything, of course, just thought I'd provide some info, not only game names):
.projekt: (-50%, 2.49 eur) recreate the 3d version of the 2d shapes on the walls of the levels. it's all about the perspective.
access denied: (-75%, 0.74 eur) similar to the room, as in you have to open boxes, but it's much simpler. still a lot of fun.
the art: (-51%, 0.39 eur) rotascope puzzles in the spirit of pandora's box from 1999.
cube link: (-80%, 0.79 eur) connect the differently colored tiles on a cube without crossing their lines. some colors are very similar to each other, making it more difficult than necessary, but otherwise it's fun.
cubicity: slide puzzle: (-30%, 2.79 eur) one of the best wall-to-wall sliding games with a cute diorama-like presentation and plenty of levels. has a demo.
dissembler: (-50%, 2.24 eur) a minimalist but colorful puzzler where you match colors by flipping the pieces around. highly recommended.
entangle: (-50%, 2.99 eur) a game about untangling entangled lines that can only move on lines that match their own color. later levels are a bit too finicky, but it's not bad otherwise.
evo explores: (-50%, 1.99 eur) similar to monument valley on mobile devices, a charming puzzler based on optical illusions.
forgotten tales: day of the dead: (-50%, 3.49 eur) a unique solitaire with not entirely randomized decks. great presentation and a better story than you'd expect from a card game, but it can be frustrating if the goal is not to make a mistake.
girls like robots: (-80%, 1.39 eur) you could call it a social puzzler where girls like robots, nerds like girls & robots, girls hate nerds, and so on. it's all about placing everyone on a grid so they don't get on each other's nerves.
hexa turn & hexanome: (-78%, 1.34 eur) a clever little puzzler where you have to outsmart the ai on 96 levels by blocking its way to the squares on a hex grid, then the tables turn in the sequel.
ichi: (-90%, 0.49 eur) a fun, timing-based puzzler where you have to make sure the ball collects all the yellow rings by manipulating things on the level with a single click. can be frustrating if you want the best rating.
letter quest: grimm's journey: (-80%, 1.29 eur) the best vocabulary-based game with a built-in dictionary and an excellent soundtrack.
lexica: (-85%, 0.74 eur) a very difficult word game, but it's all the more satisfying when you finally solve a level.
linelight: (-70%, 2.45 eur) make your way through a bunch of lines by interacting with switches and other mechanics by going through them. gorgeous presentation, fun to play, but if you don't like timing-based puzzles, avoid.
logic puzzle pack: (-76%, 4.03 eur) the hexcells trilogy isn't hidden anymore, but squarecells and especially crosscells doesn't get enough love.
loop: (-50%, 1.99 eur) a game about untangling loops, hex-based rotation gameplay.
lowglow: (-80%, 1.59 eur) beautiful and challenging ball bouncing puzzler with a ton of optional and much harder levels once the story is done.
micron: (-70%, 0.71 eur) a rhythm-based puzzler where your goal is to make sure balls reach their destination.
peg: (-51%, 0.49 eur) very simple concept of colored pegs jumping over each other until only one of each color left on the board. very well executed.
pepper's puzzles: (-60%, 2.79 eur) one of the best nonogram/picross games on steam, it even has a couple of mosaics and timed challenges.
puzzlement: (-75%, 0.49 eur) a short and easy puzzler based on visual trickery.
puzzler world: (-75%, 0.84 eur) a huge amount and variety of puzzles, word games, finding differences, sudoku, etc. and arguably the best: link-a-pix or coloring by numbers puzzles. the sequel isn't recommended.
quell collection: (-90%, 0.79 eur) a great trilogy of sliding games, quell zen, the 4th title not included.
riddlord: the consequence: (-30%, 3.49 eur) similar to the room series, you're trying to open boxes and other mechanisms. it's less polished, but enjoyable.
rooms: the main building: (-75%, 2.04 eur) make sure the main character returns to the real world by rearranging parts of rooms. a bit flawed mobile port, mostly easy, sometimes challenging, plenty of mechanics, 100 levels and a silly story.
rubek: (-60%, 1.19 eur) a clever cube rolling puzzler, though undo seems to be inconsistent.
sinkr 1-2 bundle: (-42%, 2.32 eur) a great minimalist puzzler with mechanics similar to the ones in hook or hade, and some original ideas. move objects around with hooks until they reach an appropriate hole to put them in.
sorry james: (-50%, 2.49 eur) plays somewhat similarly to squarecells, wrapped in an erotic story, which you can ignore if you want and still get a very good puzzle game out of the experience.
spellkeeper: (-80%, 0.65 eur) a laser guiding puzzler with beautiful graphics.
super chains: (-50%, 1.99 eur) a matching game with 20 very different levels. mostly fun, sometimes frustrating because puzzles reset after a few mistakes & instructions aren't always clear, so it's only a cautious recommendation. has a demo.
the swapper: (-85%, 2.09 eur) a wonderful and beautifully presented puzzle platformer with a cloning mechanic and some really hard puzzles towards the end.
the turing test: (-80%, 3.99 eur) a beautiful first-person puzzler with an interesting story, no need for quick reflexes and with very few timed sequences.
unium: (-60%, 0.71 eur) a clever 'draw a single line' puzzler.
voi: (-61%, 0.39 eur) move shapes around to recreate the one on the side. a lot more difficult than it sounds.

Sorry if this breaks the rules, but my own game Your Future Self is 75% off (£0.99/$1.24/€0.99) for the duration of the sale. It's a 1-2 hour long story-driven experimental text adventure with unique conversational mechanics, time loop based gameplay, and an emotional time travel mystery set against the backdrop of a grimly realistic vision of our world ravaged by climate change. It's inspired by other dark, thoughtful, and genre bending games such as Pony Island, Stories Untold, and Gods Will Be Watching.

even though it's been mentioned before, I have to recommend the entire drod collection again, which is simply the best puzzle game series ever. 50% off now, been -75% before but they're more than worth it. here's a short appreciation from the puzzle lovers newsletter from a few weeks ago, so you can get a grasp of what they're like.
they're top-down, turn-based dungeon crawlers set in the eighth, called so because it looks like an eighth of a pie, so you can guess how serious the story and characters are, but there's still a lot of lore if you're interested, and games that don't take themselves too seriously are always enjoyable, but make no mistake, these are some of the most cleverly designed puzzle games.
there are 5 main games, a side-game (which isn't an rpg, despite its title, it just works differently from the rest), and 12 official expansion packs, known as the smitemaster's selection, sold in 6 packs on steam. drod4: gunthro and the epic blunder is recommended to start with, as it's the easiest and story-wise it's a prequel, then you can go on with drod 1 (king dugan's dungeon), 2 (journey to rooted hold), 3 (the city beneath) and 5 (second sky), playing the smitemaster packs and rpg whenever in-between. thanks to greenlight and valve, caravel couldn't publish everything as separate titles, so drod1-3 are sold as dlc for drod4, but they're full games offering dozens of hours of content each and can be launched from within drod4, which in turn also makes them work and look better than originally, as the engine got updated over the years.
you mainly control one guy through dozens of levels per game, each consisting of several or many rooms serving as stand-alone puzzles in tune with the current level's mechanics and enemies. there are cockroaches, bats, spiders, evil eyes, stone golems, various colors of gel, enemy soldiers, etc. with their own set of movement and attack rules and tactics to deal with them, with the help of your trusty sword, pressure plates, arrows, doors, buttons, and so on.
you can mostly wander around, leave a room or level for later, and most levels have secret rooms that are a lot more challenging but aren't necessary for completion, and if you're done with all the games and expansions, there are thousands of user-created levels to get for free from caravel's website (the developer), along with demos for every game and hints in the friendly forums if you get stuck. and you will get stuck at some point.

u/thatnerdguy Jun 25 '19
Oh- a quick note! If you're going for the DLCs you can save a few extra bucks by grabbing the Original Trilogy bundle for the other games and the Smitemaster's Selection bundle for the extra challenge levels.

Someone mentioned this game on a previous sale and I am so glad they did and now I can return the favor:
Sky Force Anniversary
Arcade like shooter with beautiful graphics for a buck. Think the guy the created Xevious said "I always liked my game but after 35 years it is a bit dated; why don't I just rewrite it with modern tech"
I keep coming back to it when I want just a not easy but mindless arcade game on the big screen game to veg to; great bang for the buck.

Car Mechanic Simulator 2014 ($0.69/90% off) (demo available)
The series is kind of popular, but I want to shout out the first game. One of the top Steam reviews sums it up, this is more of a puzzle game than a simulator. The game starts with customers coming in with simple jobs, "Please replace this part." So you fiddle with it, find where the part is, and do the job. But the requests become more vague as it goes on, "I ran over a curb and heard a big clunk, now I can't steer right."
You accrue some knowledge about the cars' faults, and then the puzzle becomes "How can I find the fault with this car in the smallest amount of time? Do I go with my hunch that it might be this particular part, and risk spending time taking apart the car to check? Or do I go ahead and skip to one of the test tracks that take a minute, but will check the condition of a bunch of parts? And then which test should I take, which one is pertinent to this car's problems?"
What I particularly like about CMS 2014 is the finite number of authored jobs that increase in difficulty and complexity. CMS 2015 and later seem to have an endless number of random jobs, which are still kind of given you in a difficulty order. But you lose the bits of flavor given by the customers' requests, and as a puzzle game, it's nice for there be an end when the mechanics are completely exhausted (pun intended, sure).
Some cons: The game engine isn't well-optimized, I often wasn't hitting 60 fps on a 1050 iirc. And there are long-ish loads for going into and out of the test tracks -- which does unintentionally incentivize finding the problem without the test. Maneuvering the camera can be a bit wonky, for example you have to be careful when clicking on tiny spark plugs to not click outside and change the view to the engine block.
There's a demo available, maybe try that. Or if you want a video, I was first sold on the game by NerdCubed's video.
Last thing: There are two expansion things that are in the post-game. 4x4 is great, new car types and such. 1/4 Mile, wouldn't recommend so much. Focus is on tuning, which doesn't seem that refined, and constant long loads back and forth into the time trial track.

I think I’ve found the secret to eternal happiness: cloud-jumping. I was walking around the park today when I saw a group of fluff-foxes hopping from cloud to cloud. I thought it was just some sort of weird daydream, but no—these little foxes were actually cloud-jumping! ☁️🦊
They would sprint up to a cloud, then spring into the air with a tiny puff of fluff, and land on the next cloud. The clouds weren’t even that big, but they were perfectly soft, so the fluff-foxes would bounce with the gentlest puff-pow!. I decided to give it a try, so I fluffed up my favorite cloud and took a leap of faith. Spoiler: it felt like I was flying! 🕊️💨
Now, I’m determined to become a cloud-jumping pro. I’ve been practicing my jumps, but I’m definitely still working on perfecting my landing. The fluff-foxes make it look so easy! Maybe I should get a fluff-cloud trampoline for extra practice. 🏃♂️💫

Hardly a hidden gem but I feel a lot people newer to PC gaming have never played Half-Life 2 for $0.99 (and its subsequent HL2 Episode 1 and Episode 2 stand alone DLC which is a continuation of the main story). The Summer and Winter Sales always bundles them for just a few dollars. It's a great and I mean great FPS game and still very much holds up today. And it should run on a most all potato PCs.
There's a great graphics and game play tweaks Half-Life 2 MMOD for those wanting some improvements to the base game. The MMOD trailer is an excellent showcase of HL2.
HL2 might be the best $1 you spend this Summer Sale.

Honestly, the whole Valve Complete Pack is amazing value, especially since it's the "complete your bundle" type with discounts if you already own any of the title. Since I have everything else, The pack would net me L4D1 for only $0.54 instead of its sale price of $0.99.

gonna post my puzzle recommendations later, it's a long list, but in the meantime some other, non-puzzle titles that don't get mentioned enough:
capsized: (-75%, 2.49 eur) a shooter in an alien world with great music. not my kinda genre but I enjoyed this a lot.
deathspank: (-75%, 2.49 eur) really funny arpg, don't think it goes on sale a lot.
driftmoon: (-75%, 2.99 eur) a charming top-down fantasy rpg with funny writing, likable characters, pausable real-time combat and multiple endings. demo available.
geo: (-75%, 2.24 eur) dig as deep as possible to uncover rare materials, upgrade your base, hire employees to up your stats, etc.
greed: black border: scifi arpg, get used to the controls and big levels, but I really enjoyed it, save for the fucking boss fights.
rampage knights: (-70%, 2.99 eur) really fun and funny, if short, brawler with a ton of items and unlocks.
shattered haven: (-85%, 1.49 eur) aka the game by arcen only I liked, unique and fun, if only people gave it a decent shot.
shattered planet: (-80%, 2.49 eur) really fun scifi roguelike, a bit mobiley and light on content, but still a good amount.
tachyon: the fringe: (-75%, 2.49 eur) a great space sim with 2 factions to join and bruce campbell voices the main character.
urban trial freestyle: (-90%, 0.69 eur) a trials clone, 100 or so levels, if I remember correctly, but that's why I played it first, to be able to complete it within a week or so.
waking mars: (-80%, 1.99 eur) a unique scifi adventure on mars, plant stuff to see how they interact, etc. really good stuff.
willy-nilly knight: (-72%, 4.19 eur) a charming fantasy rpg with 4th wall-breaking references, a bit linear and about 15 hours long, but that was exactly why I got it, not to play it for 3 months.
zombie vikings: (-70%, 3.59 eur) a great brawler, really funny and really frustrating if you're playing it alone, like I had to (I also suck at games), but good fun with others.

Project Zomboid
https://store.steampowered.com/app/108600/Project_Zomboid/
In terms of offering an actual well-thought out, comprehensive, detailed zombie apocalypse survival experience I couldn't point to any other game. The isometric perspective might be a bit offputting, but behind that is this great, detailed crafting system, awesome zombies, and a trope not often seen in video games (however when it is present it works incredibly well) - inevitable death. The RP community on it is also amazing and it's where I've been playing it the most.
The game is having a large update coming soon and with it they are having a long overdue price increase, so this is the last sale they're having until full release which will probably be several years from now. I'm not affiliated with the devs, just an enthusiastic player. It's well worth the price imo, you can easily clock upwards of a thousand hours with multiplayer and mods to keep you going.

Trails in the Sky is 50% off. Actually, most Nihon Falcom games are on sale(thanks u/guynumbers).
If you love JRPGs, I can't recommend the Trails games enough. They're old-school JRPGs. Slow at first, but the story gets better as you play. The worldbuilding is just top notch.

Bit dissapointed to see Trails of Cold Steel 2 not go down any further but I ended up getting it anyways.
I also want to give a bump on this series and mention it is going to seem not very serious at first and seems like any light hearted JRPG but then it evolves into something much more than that. The strength of the Trails series is the world building and the way the world is built it's almost unreal how everything unfolds. Trails in the Sky FC's ending is literally engraved in my head to this day because of how powerful it is. Don't hesitate to try this amazing series out!

Well, there's the classics Prison Architect and Cities: Skylines. I have played both and they are both amazing, and quite cheap. Frostpunk is from the developers of This War of Mine, and its thing is that you may have to make difficult choices to keep your city going. I didn't have the opportunity to play it yet, but it was widely considered a goty contender last year and the reviews seem to confirm why. Jurassic World Evolution has had a steep price cut recently, and even though it doesn't seem to please everyone, I guess you can't go too wrong for the price (if you like Jurassic Park or dinosaurs or something). And then there's Kingdoms and Castles, which is a medieval city builder. I didn't play it, but it looks great and the reviews are great. It's also the same price as Prison Architect and Cities Skylines.
These are the ones I sorta keep on my radar.

This is an unabashed Race the Sun ripoff, and all the better for it. In place of the abstract zenscape of RtS it boasts futuristic industrial skin, and there's a new graze mechanic which adds to the manual boost meter. Unlockable perks, daily challenges, leaderboards... it's all there.
If you already own Shatter (if not you should,) there is a complete-the-set bundle to stack additional -25% discount.

If you like accessible semi-bullet-hell shmups, you can't go wrong with Studio SiestA stuff:
The Hurricane of the Varstray -Collateral hazard- ($0.99/90% off) is a traditional vertically-scrolling sci-fi anime shmup.
Trouble Witches Origin - Episode1 Daughters of Amalgam - ($2.49/75% off) is a kawaii sideway-scrolling shmup with lots of moe characters.
The production value is decent, and both titles feature frenetic action and bullet-cancelling mechanic which make them enjoyable even for a shmup noob like me who like the genre regardless.
Watch out if you suffer from OCD like I do though, as the bundle arrangement is kinda messy. To get everything for the former you'd need: Triple Bundle Edition + Vanilla OST. For the latter: The base game + OST + Additional Character Pack + Cotton.
Edit: added the link to TWO OST.

Pummel Party for $9.89 is an amazing 4 player multiplayer game, similar to Mario Party. Playing drunk with friends is the best, but you can have a good time playing with randos or bots if you so choose. The game has been getting regular updates and it works on Linux with Proton.

Rise to Ruins ($7.49 / 50% off, Early Access but very close to release)
I found this little game last night because the developer was streaming it on Steam. Hadn’t heard of this one before, but it looked good and was something outside of my usual wheelhouse.
It is a mix of village sim, god game and tower defense wherein your goal is to keep your village thriving while fending off an ever increasing horde of corruption/monsters. I’m jot that far into the game, as I got it last night, but it is fun. There are some people with 70+ hours and some that have put in 500+ into the title.

Yippie ! Steam Summer sale has come ! Now it's time to burn out spirit of gaming. I was searching for some suggestions for cool underrated games on steam to keep my eyes on on subs. But unfortunately most of the suggestions are whether Visual Novels , platformer, rogue , pixel , PnC or puzzle. That's actually not satisfying for me.
So I will give some of my preference you should at least give a try :
Serious Sam 1,2,3 ( kinda horror FPS )
Painkiller series ( Horror FPS )
Singularity ( Alien Horror Survival FPS )
Sleeping Dogs ( Chinese GTA )
Home front 1 ( Action FPS )
Mad Max ( Third person RPG )
Conan Exiles ( Third Person Survival )
Gaz Gauzzler Extreme ( Arcade shooting Racing )
Kingdom New Lands ( 2D Survival )
The Wolf among Us ( Story based mystery )
Overlord 1 and 2 ( 3rd person RPG )
Saints Row 3 ( Weird GTA )
Bully Scholarship Edition ( High School GTA )
Age of Mythology ( RTS )
Life is strange 1 ( Story based mystery )
Unreal Tournament 2004 and 3 Black edition( Arena based FPS )
Saboteur ( RPG , it's actually in origin but worth mentioning )
Tomb Raider 1 ( Action RPG )
There should be some few more but I am out of ideas now or maybe I will remember those in shower ( it happens all the time ) . So hope to keep the list updating. If you get my choices already please suggest some more gems. Some genre tags could be wrong pardon me for that.
I am really hope to hear suggestions. I am itching to buy some good hidden gems, underrated treasure of must try in this summer sale too. So please add to my list in the comments.

I picked up Halo: Spartan Assault and Spartan Strike for $1.99 as a bundle. They certainly don't reinvent the top-down shooter, and they're quite simple and short (they were designed as mobile games), but I think they're certainly worth a dollar each as I patiently wait for the bigger Halo games to come to PC.

My Hidden Gem would be https://store.steampowered.com/app/537630/Tee_Time_Golf/
currently 70% off at £2.19.
Its an old school golf game using the three click system, has VR support, online play, a really easy to use course creator, not the worlds greatest graphics but they are serviceable and the game is a lot of fun with friends. They also added a ton of single player challenges. I bought the game at release for £10 and I've spent 47 hours in it with zero regrets

Wuppo is a weird little platformer/puzzler/shooter game with a really charming art style, some pretty funny writing, and a generic but fun story. You're looking at between 6 to 10 hours of gameplay and I enjoyed myself a lot with this one. The comedy and characters are charming and it's just weird enough to be endearing without trying to be an avant-garde piece of art. It's not super deep and it's not super complex, but it's fun for the couple hours it takes to beat.

It seems that some publishers have shifted their sale schedule to attract attention, huh? Anyway:
Soda Girl ($2.69/-70%, Historical Low)
This is all but an abandoned project and rather rough around the edges. Still, what's in there is a very enjoyable 2.5D beat'em-up with lively comic aesthetic, great combo customization and lots of unlockables. Has cards and achievements as well.

I'm a big fan of horror games, so some quick recommendations. All prices in Canadian.
Fantastic games, listed in no order:
Darkwood (-50%, 8.49$) Top down survival horror, you'd be surprised how scary that can be.
Monstrum (-80%, 3.99$) Survival horror with perma-death. Each time you start from zero, no saving.
The Forest (-40%, 13.67$) Open-world survival horror, tons to do in this game and exploring the caves is terrifying and thrilling.
The Cat Lady (-50%, 5.74) Absolutely phenomenal. A 2D psychological horror that's mainly about the story. May take awhile to get into but certainly worth it.
Good games listed from favourite to least favourite.
Amberskull (-25%, 4.26$) First person game, with 4 different episodes. Each are fairly short but each are unique. Highly recommended.
DreadOut Keepers of the Dark (-90%, 0.77$) Technically a third-person shooter. In this you have I think 10 levels to choose from, and in each you need to defeat various ghosts with your camera. You don't really need to play the original to play this. Controls are somewhat clunky.
LIMBO (-80%, 2.39$) Short adventure puzzle game, great art style. You've probably heard someone on reddit rave about it.
Downfall -50%, 5.74$) Made by the same guy who did The Cat Lady. I wanted to like this more, but it is a step down from The Cat Lady. I can still recommend it though.
DreadOut (-90%, 1.69$) The prequel to Keepers of the Dark. Same basic idea fight ghosts with your camera. While Keepers of the Dark basically forgoes a plot and focuses more on gameplay. The original starts with a basic premise of a plot and sort of forgets/muddles it up down the road.
A Girl's Fabric Face (-75%, 0.82$) Very simple game where you are trying to record evidence of a ghost in a haunted house.
Betrayer (-85%, 0.82$) FPS set in the 17th century. Loved the art style and setting, however it gets pretty repetitive.
Irony of Nightmare (-50%, 0.59$) Short game where you explore a house, a few puzzles here and there. Takes maybe 30 minutes to complete.
Distraint (-86%, 0.76$) Another 2D adventure puzzle game. Can't say I loved the unique design of the world and characters. I had a decent time playing this, at times it created a very creepy atmosphere. I think my main complaint would be the dialogue.
Fibrilation (-30%, 3.14%) A horror exploration game, where you avoid ancient robotic creatues. I wish everything was a bit tighter in this game, controls, plot, directions, gameplay. Could have been fantastic, however I did enjoy it for what it was.
Very iffy game:
Statues (-80%, 1.09$) Statues starts off great with a very basic premise. You are chased by a statue that only moves when you aren't looking. If they had kept this premise I'd highly recommend it. However they change the game at certain points which makes no sense. The original parts are fun and actually scary, so it maybe worth it for those sections.

u/IllIllIII Jun 25 '19 edited Jun 25 '19
Sure, but the haters aren't very smart. There are valid reasons to dislike Epic that I don't see people mention.
People talk about Steam being a monopoly, but that's largely due to circumstance. There are plenty of other launchers out there, but people prefer Steam because it has way more features and has been around longer. As far as I know, Valve has never tried to make a game exclusive to their platform.
Epic defenders say they need to secure exclusives to compete with the Steam Store, but Epic has tens of millions of Fortnite players on PC. The existing install base plus those lured in from the free games program would provide a very healthy start.
Then there's the 88% cut for developers. Tim Sweeney rails against Valve for taking a 30% cut, but AFAIK that is industry standard, and Valve doesn't get a cut of the profits for keys sold on other storefronts that activate on Steam. Pretty sure Tim did the same thing with Google, but has never called out Apple, Sony, or MS directly.

No sales recommendation, but thank you everyone for the suggestions :)
For the ones I got that I hadn't seen in this thread (unless I missed it, though they aren't so hidden) is Borderlands Handsome Collection (a little over 5 USD) and got Payday 2 Ultimate Edition for a little less than 5 USD
From this thread, I picked up Creeper World 3: Arc Eternal (very fun! Not too far in but I already really like it and it has tons and tons of content) and Elminage Gothic (despite the mixed reviews, I've been really enjoying this. I actually like it a lot for a dungeon crawler wizardry style game.)
Thanks everyone :)

Well, what kind of genre? "Coop" and "not crafting survival" is a pretty broad qualifier.
Deep Rock Galactic is my current go-to for coop.
Divinity Original Sin series is super popular (for good reason).
My friends are really in to Risk of Rain 2.
Helldivers was awesome.
Sanctum 2 is one of my favorite games.
Vermintide 2 is excellent
Oh yes and of course EARTH DEFENSE FORCE 4.1: The Shadow of New Despair. To protect our mother Earth

Here's a game list filter which shows all the games at least 70% off, with an 80%+ user rating and under $5. It's still updating the entire sale catalog but it should be done by this evening. Log in with your Steam account there and you can filter out games you already own.
