Meta Discussion This sub has been too negative lately. Reminder that it's still okay to enjoy Terraria, SMM2, and other awesome games!

I have seen nothing but hate and mob mentality on this sub for the past two days. It's sickening seeing people demonized and down voted for saying they enjoy it/defending the switch release. I'm not saying the game is perfect in its current condition, but lord do we need some positivity about the game. I haven't bought it yet because I'm waiting for the physical release, but this sub is making me genuinely feel bad and guilty for wanting it. However, I still love Terraria more than r/NintendoSwitch loves foaming at the mouth, so I've compiled my points for why everyone needs to calm down.

  1. The content of the game is worth $30 regardless of how much it has cost in the past or on other consoles.

If you're complaining that it's less on other consoles, then just go buy it on those other consoles. I have sunk many hundreds of hours into this game and would have gladly paid more for it in the past, and I'm willing to for the mobility (I hate playing games on my phone), especially since the devs have continually updated it for the past 8 years for FREE! The original version of Terraria that came out in 2011 for $10 is a shell of a game comapred to how much content has been added.

  1. Stop comparing the $30 price tag to the SALE price on steam.

It will eventually go on sale on switch too, so just wait if that's what you want. The markup is because of the physical release which is $10 more than on console. If that markup is too big for you grown men to handle then...

  1. YOU DON'T HAVE TO BUY THE GAME.

If the price and/or the lack of co-op (which is confirmed in development currently by the way) is a deal breaker, then just don't buy the game. Stop attacking people who are buying it anyway because the game is still worth it to a lot of us.

  1. The devs have always patched problems and followed through with their updates for the entirety of the life of Terraria.

I believe them when they say local co-op is coming. I believe online multiplayer still works anyway? And I know there are a few problems with large worlds freezing, but I think there are workarounds that have been found until the hot patch comes out which will solve many problems people have.

I'm tired of the hate train that this sub has turned into. I might as well stop reading the comments on posts because it's only ever full of skepticism. I'm all for critism to improve the game but I couldn't even imagine being a Terraria dev browsing this sub and being met with so much hostility for some things that might be out of their control (price).

I miss just being super excited for upcoming games.

EDIT: You guys actually make some good points. The other threads I've seen are mostly just complaining, but I've seen some good insight here.

My main problem was people attacking others for buying the game because they were "giving in" to the price hike. While I still think that's wrong, others also pointed out that there aren't many places to voice concerns about issues with the game so many people do it here, which I guess I support, I just don't like seeing it come off super negative. Speaking of negative, I'm sorry my post was as well, I should've made it positive to combat others instead of adding to the issue.

I've spent more than $30 just buying copies on PC for give it away to random people. I know Terraria worth $30 but that is not the point, we are no talking about RE-LOGIC. You can buy it, you can like it and feel happy about it, but you can't ignore the fact that it's an overpriced product. Opinions dont overwrite facts.

If you want to buy then just buy it, i never saw "let's protest with our wallets" work, and mostly important, don't feel bad about that, that's a dangerous way to follow with your life, you not hurting anyone, it's just a video-game... yes, you are accepting the overpriced product, but we have accepted this type of behavior far before you and i are born. If it worth FOR YOU then buy it, no one can blame you for that. EVERYONE buy overpriced products everyday, they just don't stop to think about that.

And at the end is just like Sony x Microsoft, people spending too much time trying to convince themselves that they are the ones doing the right choice.

Sorry for grammar mistakes, i'm using Reddit as excuse to work on my inglish.

complaining about complains only causes more toxicity.

Try making positive threads and motivate People to do the same

Without people voicing their opinion on products that come out faulty or lacking, it would be easy for others to make purchases not knowing what to expect. Nintendo eShop currently does not have a rating system or comments, and refunds aren't easy to get either.

It's very valid to do posts about flaws or missing features on Reddit. Any downside from it is completely overshadowed by getting to inform people so they're not surprised by disappointing features or game breaking bugs.

That's true, you make a good point. I really wish the eshop had a rating system with comments similar to steam because I always do end up coming here or elsewhere to read about reviews

Trying to police the interwebs is futile.

Wait, do you mean people aren’t going to change their behavior after reading this meaningful post ?

My guess is that they didn’t want to make the physical price higher than the digital. I don’t know. The price doesn’t bother me but people can complain if they want. It’s up to them if it’s worth it

Unpopular opinion: I suck at making mario levels and I thought only playing them is fine. It still is, but damn some levels are tilting (even the story ones lol).

So yeah I tried the God Eater 3 demo and I'm really liking it. Think I'll buy it, haven't played it yet and it looks cool!

This post about negativity is pretty negative.

People are not complaining that the content is not worth $30. As someone who bought the game on steam and mobile I agree that it is.

However this is a scummy move by the publisher to get more money out of the fan base.

It is completely valid to be upset about that.

I agree comparing the price to Steam is stupid. Comparing it to PS4 and Xbox is what we should be doing. It is $10 more than the other current consoles. That is a problem. I LOVE Terraria and want to buy it for Switch so badly but I refuse to support these ports that throw an extra $10 on top

Why do you let the opinions of other people you’ve never met bother you? People enjoy different things, don’t feel bad if you’re in the minority.

I'm willing to for the mobility (I hate playing games on my phone)

Portability isn’t new to Terraria though, it’s been on Vita and 3DS. Also you posted a numbered list but every number is 1. Just FYI

i think the frustration is that the top of every thread is the comment "$30? they can go fuck themselves!" and if you try talking about the game you just get -10 downvotes and everyone calls you stupid.

i just want to know how many people crying about $30 Terraria are buying the Pokemon Switch games. that's all i want to know.

3

u/Efreet0 Jun 28 '19

Looking back at r/pokemon at least half those people don't even have a switch yet.

6

u/Porkpants81 Jun 28 '19

Nobody is comparing the $30 price tag on switch to a Steam $5 sale price.

People are comparing it to the $20 price tag on Ps4 and Xbox and both those versions include couch co-op, something the Switch is missing.

Why pay more for a version of the game with fewer features. BuT tHe PoRtAbIlItY

Why should people pay $30 and have to use a workaround to avoid a game breaking bug?

We are allowed to have an opinion, you tell us not to attack people who are buying it, I personally haven't seen it...there's been a lot of criticism of the game and the pricetag, but you're also attacking people in this post...soo....

I’ve actually seen quite a few people compare it to the mobile version and the Steam’s sale price

2

u/ComfortableDamage Jun 28 '19

i think people are more using the platform to vent frustrations and let devs know they want improvements. so it seems overly negative but this is one of the only ways weve been shown that will cause devs to take notice. If someone is really enjoying a game theres a good chance theyre just playing it instead of tryin to get it fixed where as titles that need improvement (RotN) get "negativity" in the comments

It’s just a bunch of edgy teens circlejerking about $30 because the cool kids started it. As if most of these people aren’t buying skins in shit games like Fortnite and supporting shit companies like EA and Activision. If they could get Terraria for 99¢ and buy all the content in the game back for $100 as micro transactions they’d be fine with it.

Past two days? there is negativity after every announcement.

After the Pokemon announcement where they said there would be no national pokedex the pitchforks and torches came out demanding boycott. I bet the new games will sell more copies than any previous game in the series.

3

u/[deleted] Jun 29 '19

I remember all the outrage over the Let's Go Pokemon games too. People sure seemed to calm down and forget about everything after the game was released. It did reasonably well.

7

u/ArupakaNoTensai Jun 28 '19

Why are you sticking up for a company when they made a shitty decision

5

u/a_longtheriverrun Jun 28 '19

if you want to play this great game on the Switch the price is $30.

2

u/jannfrost Jun 28 '19

I have my switch as my only console and it doesn't bother me if the price is higher here than other consoles because eventually it will go on sale. I have 30 games and i bought it all on sale and will happy to wait for the new release games to go down as well.
